• When in mainland Male, dress appropriately. Always respect the traditions and culture of the country you visit.
• We bought just one sim card for everyone to share and made use of free hotel Wi-fi. Much to our delight, all the hotels we stayed in had a good Wi-fi connection that even reached our rooms.
• Never be afraid to ask around. We got good deals by asking around and engaging with the locals.
• We always bring USD when we travel because when changed to another currency like Maldivian Rufiyaa, the rate is usually higher.
• Be adventurous in food! I like trying out local dishes each time I travel.
• I find it interesting to strike conversations with fellow tourists and locals because most of the time, they also share their experiences and give out helpful tips.
• When in Maldives, I suggest that you will really experience their signature water bungalow accommodation. Pricey but worth it!
• We bought water at Maafushi Island before heading to Fihalhohi Island Resort because bottled water costs USD 4 at the resort and we bought ours at 7 Maldivian Rufiyaa (USD 0.5) only. Talk about savings and practicality.
• We only paid half board at the Fihalhohi Island Resort, meaning we were only served with breakfast buffet and dinner buffet, so we brought along chips, coffee, cookies, chocolates and bread with us that we munched on as we enjoyed beach bumming and swimming.
• We moved from one place to another so if you follow this itinerary, bring along luggage bags that you are not afraid to be scratched. We brought our Rimowa luggage, and we were always concerned about the handling.
• Bring a neck pillow for this long flight. I was glad I brought along mine.
• They said that Maldives is a honeymoon destination , but we proved that it can also be a good vacation place for a group of good friends sharing the same interest in travelling and beaches.
• Take a lot of pictures. Although pictures do not give justice to the beauty of this island, I wish I took a lot of them.
• Bring a whole lot of sunblock lotion for skin protection and tanning lotion for those of you who want to get a glowing Maldivian tan.

Memories are treasures that nobody can take away from you. So, travel as much as you can. You don’t have to be rich to travel. You can enjoy just the same even with a trip on a budget.

Here are some suggestions to make your Maldives more pocket friendly.

• Cheaper airfares can be bought from Airasia website as long you are flexible with your travel dates.  We travelled during Holy week with specific dates in mind, so we did not get the best prices for airfares.
• For transfers to / from Male and Maafushi, you can take the public ferry at USD 3 each per way instead of private speedboat which will cost you USD 25.
• You can spend your day with activities like fishing, sand bar hopping, etc.  Also, you can take day tours to Resort Islands instead of booking a room in the resort.  You can arrange your excursions easily by several tour operators found in Maafushi.
• Visit Maldives during low season (June – October) as resorts are cheaper.  Book in an inland room.  They are usually half the price of the water bungalow.

The country is made up of 26 natural atolls with channels that are used for navigation. All the islands are surrounded by a lagoon with crystal-clear waters. These islands are protected by coral reefs, sustaining a spectacular array of underwater life.

Living Attractions in the Maldives

For divers, there are around 70 incredible dive sites to experience in the Maldives. The southern atolls are renowned for coral and have lots of channels for spotting sharks and barracudas. The northern atolls have interesting reefs in shallower waters. The sea here is home to 1100 species of fish, five species of sea turtles, and 21 species of whales and dolphins. There are a number of wrecks dotted around where ships have floundered. Snorkeling is open to everyone who can swim.

Useful information for planning your holiday in the Maldives

The official language of the Maldives is Maldivian Divehi, a dialect of Sinhala (spoken by most Sri Lankans), with script derived from Arabic. English is spoken in most hotels and visitor hubs and by officials.

The currency of the Maldives is the rufiyaa (Rf), however, euros and US dollars are also widely accepted. All major credit cards can be used at resorts, in restaurants and shops in Malé, and on several other islands. There’s an ATM in the airport if you’d like to withdraw rufiyaa but there’s normally a 5% charge. The rufiyaa is a closed currency, so you’ll need to change back any local cash before leaving as you’ll be unable to do so elsewhere.

In the Maldives you should try freshly caught fish and seafood, the local staple. Typically served with rice or roshi (flatbread), you’ll find fish in everything from breakfast dishes such as mas huni (smoked tuna with onion, chilli, and coconut) to street snacks such as baija (pastry stuffed with fish, onions, and coconut).

Most Maldivian dishes have Asian and Arabic influences, but you’ll find Asian and European food on most resort menus. Government and service taxes of 10% and 12% are also added to all costs locally.

Where a service charge isn’t already included, a 10% tip is expected in Maldivian restaurants. Some resorts automatically add 10% to bills for additional services.

Light, airy summer clothing is ideal in the Maldives where the strong sun means you’ll also need a hat and sunglasses. While beachwear is fine by the pool or on the beach, topless and nude sunbathing is prohibited. The Maldives is an Islamic country, and you should dress modestly in towns and villages and cover your shoulders and knees. Although you shouldn't touch corals, plastic shoes are a good precaution against cuts from sharp pieces of coral.

Powdery soft sands, crystalline waters, excellent snorkelling and diving, and resorts that offer unashamed luxury are what the Maldives are all about. Whether you want to spend your day by the pool or in the spa, would prefer to dive over coral reefs or on shipwrecks, kayak through shoals of kaleidoscopic fish, or feast on the finest of foods, we’ll find the right place for you.

Choosing where to go in the Maldives can be tricky, but with around 100 different resorts you’ll easily find somewhere to suit you whether you’re on honeymoon, in search of total relaxation, or hoping to snorkel with manta rays and sharks. One of the joys of a trip to the Maldives is that there’s no need to go anywhere. Each island is its own all-inclusive destination with hotel, restaurants, water sports, and blissful white sands. You’ll arrive at the international airport in Malé and travel by seaplane or speedboat to your resort from there.

UK citizens will be issued with a tourist visa valid for 30 days on arrival in the Maldives providing you can show evidence of an onward or return flight.

Check that your passport is valid for six months beyond your date of entry into the Maldives and has one unstamped double page free.

Your doctor can provide you with vaccine advice for the Maldives. You can also check the suggested vaccinations on the  Travel Health Pro website and you should ensure you’re up to date with the recommended vaccinations at home.
