Northlane (formed in 2009) is an Australian five-piece metalcore band, best known for their 2011 sophomore album “Singularity”, hailing from Blacktown, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

Named after the Architects songs of the same name, Northlane was originally comprised of vocalist Adrian Ftlipaldes, lead guitarist Jon Deiley, rhythm guitarist Josh Smith, bassist Alex Milovic, and drummer Brenden Derby. Prior to the release of their debut EP “Hollow Existence” Milovic and Derby were replaced by Simon Anderson and Mitchell Collier, respectively. The EP introduced the band to a wide audience and was supported by extensive touring around Australia.

Due to this success Northlane signed with UNFD towards the tail-end of 2011, who issued the band’s debut studio album “Discoveries” in November 2011. Charting at No. 85 on the Australian Albums Chart, the record earned a wave of positive reviews and was produced by William Putney. The album was supported by more relentless touring opening for the likes of August Burns Red, House Vs Hurricane, and Parkway Drive. Following a Canadian tour alongside Counterparts and Stray from the Path, the group returned to the studio with Will Putney to record their sophomore album.

In the wake of the band’s second album “Singularity”, Northland embarked on a modest regional tour across Australia with In Hearts Wake. Led by the single “Worldeater” the band issued their second studio album “Singularity” in March 2013. Promoted via a clever hype campaign that led fans to decode details and guess track listings, the record proved to be their most successful to date, peaking at No. 3 on the Australian Albums Chart. Northlane supported the album by embarking on their “Singularity” tour alongside Stray from the Path, Statues, and Karnivool.

The group subsequently made their U.S. touring debut, initially with Veil of Maya and Structures, and later on the American Dream Tour alongside Bring Me the Horizon and Of Mice and Men. In September 2014 it was announced vocalist Adrain Fitipaldes was leaving Northland due to health issues and a month later his replacement, Marcus Bridge, appeared on their new single “Rot”.

Saw them with Erra last night in Salt Lake City. I have seen Erra a couple of times and they are great live, really fun. Northlane however is on a whole other level! I have been a fan of theirs for several years but have never had the chance to see them until now. OMG! They are so original, super tight and seriously throw down on stage. The energy that they project as a group and receive from the crowd is incredible! They pour their hearts into every song, one of those bands that is on another level when performing live. Their albums are amazing but they're seriously even better live! I'm old school and have been going to metal shows for 25 years, hundreds of shows, the best bands.... these guys are legit one of THE BEST performing bands I have ever seen! I can't give enough props to do them justice, if you have the chance SEE THEM! I hope they come back to my neck of the woods soon!

Seriously not to be missed! These guys are absolutely incredible live.

Can't comment on Ocean Grove as we didn't make it down early enough for them, but I enjoyed Invent, Animate who were solid, energetic and intricate. ERRA were next level though, so much stage presence and cleverly constructed tunes, everything sounded perfect. Even ERRA though were blown away by Northlane. They create such an incredible atmosphere, so much power and passion, the whole room was bouncing! Honestly don't miss these guys, can't rate them high enough!

I was very impressed the first time I saw Northlane at the Metro last November. But this gig was something else. The set list was very well planned. The songs from the new album added another dimension to the set and it was an excellent mix of Northlane's quality back catalogue. The boys were clearly on their game as a collective but Marcus up front and Nic on drums were simply outstanding. Kudos to the sound team at UOW Uni Bar because the sound was phenomenal. Best show I've been to in ages.

Amazing concert, absolutely loved it! They gave it all and gave a fantastic show. Some songs even sounded better live than on spotify. Also loved the special guests, but maybe it was too much with 3 bands as we had to wait a lot for the bands to set up each time. But Northlane Just smashed it!

That was.... FUCKING DOPE! You guys are amazing. Great show. Even better than how they sound on studio, which is pretty hard since most of bands can't be as good as on studio - normally they look better without cleans. But man, u rocked. That was pretty surprising

It was fucking sick man!! Loved it ! I will definitely be keeping an eye out for all the band's that were there. Everyone needs to check out from another planet. They were one of the best! Help them become a success be a use they definitely diserve it !

Fantastic show, best mosh pit I've ever been to, security gave up trying to control us after 2 minutes, the place was an absolute riot. Not too many stupid people throwing punches either, quite respectful. Stage dives, circle pits, Beautiful.

As usual, Northlane exceeded my high expectations. I'm not a fan of the new album (I think my brother and I are the only ones), but it's safe to say that when played live, it kicks ass.

Northlane Announce New Tour For 2024 With Novelists & Ten56

Northlane have announced a new UK and European tour, promising exciting shows across September and October.

Starting on September 12th at Vienna’s SIMM City, the tour includes 20 dates with stops in Frankfurt, Paris, Manchester, Birmingham, London, and Bristol, among other cities.

They’ll be joined by French progressive metal band Novelists and ten56 as support acts. This tour news arrives just before the release of Northlane ‘s Mirror’s Edge EP on April 12th and follows their recent single Afterimage , featuring Ian Kenny from Karnivool , as well as the announcement of their US tour , last week.

Northlane on European tour late summer 2024

Northlane has just announced a new European and UK tour with support from Ten56 and Novelists . The tour kicks off on 12 September in Vienna, Austria, and wraps up on 06 October in Solothurn, Switzerland.

The tour will also visit Belgium on 24 September at the Trix in Antwerp. Tickets for this show will go on sale on 28 March at 11am on the venue’s website . Check out all the dates for this tour on the poster below.

Northlane will be back next month with their new EP Mirror’s Edge .

Northlane announce UK and European tour

Northlane will tour across the UK and Europe in November and December in support of their latest album Mesmer

Northlane have announced a UK and European tour which will take place later this year.

The Australian outfit have lined up the shows in support of their fourth studio album Mesmer , which arrived back in March via UNFD.

The dates will get under way on November 23 at Hamburg’s Markthalle and wrap up with a set at Petit Bain in Paris on December 16.

Support will come from Erra, Invent, Animate and Ocean Grove.

Guitarist Josh Smith says: “We recently spent a month burning laps around the mainland and UK for the summer festival season, playing some of our biggest stages and wildest side shows to date.

“Now you’re all warmed up, we are bringing Mesmer to the citizens of Europe and the UK with our sickest show we’ve had here to date. We can’t wait, and you can’t miss it.”

K-pop boyband Stray Kids have announced their upcoming 2024 to 2025 ‘dominATE’ world tour, featuring concerts in Asia, Europe, North America and more.

On July 8, Stray Kids announced the first batch of dates and concerts for their upcoming 2024 to 2025 ‘dominATE’ world tour. The tour will kick off with its APAC leg, running from August 2024 to January 2025.

The APAC leg of the ‘dominATE’ tour will open with four shows at the KSPO Dome in South Korea from late-August to early-September. Thereafter, the boyband will play shows across East Asia, Southeast Asia and Australia, up until mid-January 2025.

According to the newly released poster for Stray Kids’ 2024 to 2025 ‘dominATE’ world tour, more concerts will be announced in the future for its Latin America, North America and Europe legs.

The ticketing details for the APAC leg of Stray Kids’ new tour have yet to be announced. Keep tabs on this page for the latest updates.

It is "quite normal" for people to live more than an hour from their workplace. 

Urban sprawl and the search for affordable housing are contributing factors.

What's next?

Experts say governments can ease commute times by bolstering public transport.

The average Australian worker spends more than an hour a day stuck in rush-hour traffic, fighting for a seat on the bus or trying to zone out on the train.

Commute times nationwide are longer than for many European countries — they also surpass other car-dependent countries such as the United States.

But is there a reason we're lagging behind? And what can we do to make our travel time shorter?

Are commuter times likely to get better soon?

It's all relative but commuter times in Australia have been increasing .

For example, workers averaged a weekly commuting time of about 3.7 hours just more than two decades ago. That grew to about 4.5 hours in 2017.

Dr Alan Both from the Australian Urban Observatory said the urban sprawl in some of the larger cities including Melbourne and Sydney was contributing to the increase in commuter travel time.

"It's quite normal for people to be living over an hour away from work," he said.

"Affordability is the main issue with these sorts of things — you can't expect young professionals to be able to afford anywhere near the city, they just simply have to live further out.

"And because of that, they have the experience of longer commutes."

Dr Both explained there were solutions to ease the traffic and add more public transport in newly built suburbs in some of the country's growth areas.

"One of the last things to go in are things like bus stops. So in general, if you're moving to a new area, you are a car user," he said.

"So you have to drive and that increases the traffic on the roads and slows everything down."

He added that due to the heavy reliance on car usage and a lack of public transport options in some of these newly built outer suburbs, delays in getting to work were inevitable.

"New suburbs have really bad congestion. You even see it in the sort of middle- and outer-ring suburbs where just getting onto the highway is a traffic jam," he said.

"So not even actually getting to the highway just, you know, entering and exiting."

RMIT University's Dr Koorosh Gharehbaghi specialises in public transport systems.

He said the average distance people were living away from work was increasing but there were other factors at play.

"In cities that are doing sort of a large upgrade with the Sydney Metro, even Melbourne, for example, the commuter time has increased because they're doing a lot of maintenance works and upgrades," he said.

"But what it comes down to is the actual distance of travel to work."

How does Australia compare to other parts of the world?

Australia does not compare well to international examples in both Europe and North America.

In Europe, more than 60 per cent of workers in the EU travelled less than half an hour from work to home.

But experts including Dr Gharehbaghi have said European examples might not be the best comparison when it comes to Australia.

For example, cities such as Copenhagen were smaller in size and population.

But Dr Gharehbaghi said there were elements like frequency of service that Australia could try to emulate.

"The level of public transport service they have … are not only the latest systems available, but the frequency that they have with their public transport is quite high," he said.

What are some international examples that Australia could look to?

Experts have said Australia should look at cities that have a comparable size with similar levels of urban sprawl of large capitals including Melbourne and Sydney.

"In smaller cities and countries, they have much more [stricter] sort of planning schemes, which means they heavily monitor due to lack of available land," he said.

It's why he thinks some of Australia's largest cities should look to Toronto for models to improve commuter travel.

"What you find with Toronto, is it has a lesser commuter wait time compared to Melbourne," he said.

"Why that is, because they're spending a lot of money on upgrading and updating the systems, more than the state government of Victoria, as well as the federal government."

What can governments do to improve work commute times?

The frequency of public transport services is top of the list for both experts but they say there needs to be more foresight in planning our cities.

"Increasing frequency is one but also in making sure that, again, that the system can be able to handle that higher-intensity service required," Dr Gharehbaghi said.

He believes a bigger problem for increased commuter times, especially in some of the larger capital cities, is unchecked growth in some outer-suburban communities.

"We have urban growth corridors that are designated by the state governments in terms of the population sort of growth for the future," he said.

"But what happens is, when the population of cities are expanding, [they are] not in the particular area that the government had in place in terms of possible growth." 

Dr Both explained there were several things in play, including increased frequency of services and higher density.

But he said there were some quick wins governments could have in improving commuter times.

"One of the big barriers for people using the transit system is inflexibility. You quickly become beholden to the schedule of the public transit," he said.

He added there might be difficulty in increasing services on trains in the short term but said there was an opportunity to strengthen the bus network.

"If you go to the outer suburbs or even middle-ring suburbs, there might be a bus only every 30 minutes," he said.

"If you've just missed that bus, you're waiting there for another 30 minutes."

Norwegian cyclist Andre Drege dies in crash at Tour of Austria

VIENNA, Austria (AP) — Norwegian cyclist Andre Drege has died after a crash during the Tour of Austria, his team, race organizers and the International Cycling Union said on Saturday.

The 25-year-old Team Coop-Repsol rider crashed in a downhill and suffered fatal injuries, race organizers said.

“Andre crashed and sustained severe injuries,” race organizers said in a statement on social media. “Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident.”

According to race organizers, the rider from the Coop Repsol team crashed on the descent from the Grossglockner mountain. Details about the accident have yet to emerge.

“The UCI is devastated to learn of the death of professional cyclist Andre Drege at the Tour of Austria,” the UCI said on X. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends and teammates.”

The penultimate stage from St. Johann over the Grossglockner to Kals in East Tyrol was won by Italian Filippo Ganna. The victory ceremony was canceled.

It was unsure whether Sunday’s final stage will take place.

Tributes from teams competing at the Tour de France poured in after the news of Drege’s death reached cycling’s biggest race.

“It’s hard to process what happened, we are all quite in shock,” Tour de France leader Tadej Pogacar said. “This is very sad to hear. My condolences go to his family, teammates and all his loved ones. In the cycling world, we need to take care of each other.”

Drege is the latest pro rider to die in competition after Swiss cyclist Gino Mäder last year at the Tour de Suisse.

Belgian rider Wouter Weylandt was killed in a crash on a descent at the Giro d’Italia in May 2011. Another Belgian rider, Antoine Demoitié, died after crashing at the one-day Gent-Wevelgem race in March 2016.

Professionals would rather ‘super-commute’ for over 4 hours a day and keep their pandemic-style suburban life than live near the office

During the pandemic, an exodus of professionals left their urban jungle flats for sprawling suburban homes in more scenic rural areas—and now, despite cities bouncing back and offices reopening, they’d rather commute for hours on end on a train (or plane) than give up their newfound life on the outskirts.

New research by Trainline shows that the number of people in the U.K. spending more than three hours getting to work and back—otherwise known as “super-commuting”—has doubled since before the pandemic. 

Although super-commuters are defined as those with journeys to work of least 90 minutes one way, the train ticket platform found that most actually spend at least two hours traveling in each direction.

Perhaps surprisingly, most super-commuters aren’t those lucky few who only have to show face in the office once in a blue moon.

Most professionals who moved far from the office during the pandemic say they have hybrid working to thank (or blame) for their new commuting habit and for being able to keep their after-work country lifestyle.

On average, super-commuters are heading into the office three days a week and as a result, wasting at least 12 hours—more than an entire workday—on a train each week, just to sit at their desks. 

Yet despite having less time to actually enjoy their suburban life than those living close to the office, three-quarters of super commuters said they are happier for it, and over a third reported enjoying a better work-life balance.

Others admitted that the hefty journey is worth it for their reduced cost of living on the outskirts. 

Super-commuting is a global phenomenon

Super-commuting isn’t a U.K.-specific trend. Across the pond in the States, the mean distance to work rose from 10 miles in 2019 to 27 miles at the end of 2023, according to a study from payroll processing and HR services company Gusto .

According to their data, millennials—who are mostly in their thirties and settling down—live the farthest away from their employer.

Take hairstylist Katlin Jay: The 30-year-old travels 650 miles on a plane from Charlotte, N.C., to New York on a biweekly basis. 

But she told New York Post that she is paying less money on travel (at around $1,000 a month) than she would on rent if she lived near her Upper West Side job.

Meanwhile, even in Germany, a 32-year-old director is flying across the continent to London for work to get the best of both worlds. However, to those enticed by Seb’s way of life, he warned in Business Insider that the five-hour commute won’t be sustainable in the long run. 

But be warned: You may be asked to move back 

Even now that it’s clear most companies will require their workers in the office for part of the week—and having undoubtedly heard their colleagues complain about their long commute—Trainline’s research found that over half of city-living workers are eyeing up the super-commute club. 

Why? Just like current super-commuters, most think it’ll improve their work-life balance.

“Hybrid working has helped fundamentally shift work and travel habits over the past few years, with more people now choosing a longer commute so they can both live and work where they want,” Sakshi Anand, VP of growth at Trainline, said. 

“Our research shows that not only are these rail super-commuters on the rise, but that the phenomenon is here to stay.”

But beware: Bosses could ask you to choose between the office or your life on the outskirts. 

Just last week, Patagonia told its remote customer service employees that they must now live within 60 miles of one of seven “hubs” in Atlanta, Salt Lake City, Reno, Dallas, Austin, Chicago, or Pittsburgh. 

The sustainable outdoors brand gave around 90 workers the ultimatum: Relocate or quit.

Likewise, last year TikTok warned U.S. workers whose home addresses aren’t in the vicinity of its office that they could lose their jobs if they don’t relocate .
