Misfits are an American horror punk and heavy metal band who formed in 1997, and after a decade of hiatus from 1983 – 1995, have now reformed with a slightly revitalised line up of musicians.

The band now consists of Jerry Only on bass guitar and vocals, Dez Cadena playing guitar, and Eric Arce on the drums. Only is the sole remaining band member from the original line up, but the fresh and original playing techniques of the two newer members bring organic and exciting new elements to the trio’s sound. With eight studio albums under their belt, and four movie appearances, Misfits managed to travel into mainstream culture and popular media throughout their careers.

Although the band’s history of legal battles slightly dampens their career after Glenn Danzig filed a law suit against Only, their tours and musical talents are renowned for being exciting and original, and it hasn’t prevented the remainder of the band from continuing to perform. The band are known for their eccentric rock style make up that they sport on stage, and their enthusiastic high energy performances. As well as this, all of their performances use images inspired by horror or science fiction films, adding exciting elements of theatricality to the shows that they put on. Largely considered to be icons of their genre, the band have an eclectic following, from original fans from their early days, right up to young metalcore enthusiasts.

Live reviews

Original horror-punk pioneers The Misfits were THE epitome of the genre when they broke onto the scene back in 1977 when the Ramones were alive and kicking and punk was still an increasingly popular subculture. Misfits have been putting out dark, B-movie inspired records since the release their early-Eighties albums 'Walk Among Us' (1982) and 'Earth A.D./ Wolfsbood' (1983)- both considered cornerstones of the American post-hardcore movement. Founded by the growlingly powerfully-voiced singer/ songwriter Glenn Danzig and bassist Jerry Only, the band has undergone some serious line-up changes in their time, with a rift between the two causing Danzig to quit in 1983 to go on to form other projects. After a long hiatus, Only has brought their unique brand of horror-punk-fun into the new decade, with a string of stadium and fetsival tour dates over the past few years.

As hardcore Misfits fans will know, that their live shows are always a theatrical, spikes 'n leather-laden frightfest, and an exhilaratingly unique experience. Despite having been going close to 40 years, and the possibility that their faces may now be a scarier sight before the skull make-up is applied, they continue to tour frequently- and their original, angst-ridden blend of dramatic murder tale lyrics and frantic guitar riffs, complemented by thunderous drumming, sounds very nearly just the same as when they played their songs the first time around. At any rate, Jerry Only's Misfits in 2014 put on a ghoulishly entertaining show.

New Jersey outfit Misfits can boast to being the pioneers of a genre when they emerged in the early 80s with the self described sound of horror punk. Heavily inspired by horror film themes and imagery, the band successfully worked these nuances into a stage show which quickly gained huge following in their homeland as well as across the pond in the UK. There were few bands creating a sound as extreme as Misfits yet still incorporating a real sense of showmanship.

This consistency is still evident today as Jerry Only and co step out onstage through the ominous spinning lights that are likened to prison towers or helicopters. The tone is very much set for opener 'The Devil's Rain' which threatens to lift the roof off the intimate venue with screeching riffs and deep bass notes that rumble through the room. The crowd naturally erupts in excitement and cheers as the group run through a setlist consisting of all eight studio albums. The horror influence is really evident on a finale of 'Skulls' and 'Die, Die My Darling' as the whole audience lifts their hands in unison and salutes the punk warriors.

Sadly Sound kick mislead on this concert. I was sceptical from the start bases on price and venue but was at least expecting a cover band. None of the band's listed for this were actually present. They were all a bunch of local rappers using the names of large bands. Everyone in my party was highly disappointed but found it comical at the same time.

This is the second time that Song kick has provided misleading information for concerts in my area. At least the first one they had the band's right just couldn't provide an accurate start time. I don't know if I will continue to use this app, if I do I will be doing my own research a little closer to verify all information is provided.

Misfits were awesome hammering out song after song in lightning like rythem played many early songs some from the graves era as well played some devils rain Miss graves and wish he was singing because only doesn't really sing well as a vocalist but he's very crowd friendly fez and Eric arcy walked out through the barricade to greet fans before the show in route to the stage while after the show Jerry only signed and took photos forever a really cool guy and that goes a long way in my book overall 4 of 5 stars

Awesome show!! First time at the Bronson Centre and it's a great venue. The Misfits are legends, and they certainly delivered: close to 2 hours of uninterrupted horror punk mayhem.

They kicked off the night by playing Static Age in full, before jumping into some classics. Then they delivered some Michael Graves era stuff, before ending with tracks off their newest Album.

The show ended with Halloween, which was a fitting end given that Halloween is coming up.

The Misfits show at the forum was incomparable to anything in this world. Their performance was dead on. The set list covered a wide variety with early songs such as She, and Bullet, as well many tunes from Walk Among Us, and Earth AD. Glenn and company seemed to get along well, and the show kept getting better as it progressed. I have listened to The Misfits for over 30 years, and am glad to have had this opportunity.

We all came to listen to great music, and that's exactly what we got. Overall, it was an incredible performance with incredible people and it was definitely not a night to forget.

My friends and I also really appreciated that the members of the band took the time after the concert to give signatures and even meet/talk to every fan who wanted to meet them. We would definitely see them again.

TERRIBLE SOUND QUALITY AT VENUE. parking cost as much as my ticket. Band was pretty good but couldn’t hear it he lyrics at all. Part of it is Glenn’s age, bigger part is the sound system at prudential center. I would never go back to this venue after this experience.

Sorry but it just wasnt up to scratch. The vocals were a bit all over the place especially early on. Jerry Jr on guitar was totally going through the motions and the drums kept drowning it all out. Having said that everyone else seemed to be having a good tome. 2/5.

scottyscott1970’s profile image

I can't see them and have not listened to any post Danzig music since Danzig left. Just not the same. The Misfits had an original sound back in the 70's and 80's that truly shocked people. Totally loved that. Misfits now are just another metal band with a gimmick.

Misfits Announce Three 2023 Shows, Megadeth + AFI Among Opening Acts

Horror punk legends the Misfits have just announced three 2023 shows, featuring different special guests at each stop with Megadeth and AFI being among those tabbed to open.

The number of gigs now on the books equals the total amount of shows the band played across 2021 and 2022, meaning it's another rare chance for fans to catch one of punk's biggest acts of all time.

Since coming back in 2016 as the Original Misfits  (featuring original singer and songwriter Glenn Danzig and original bassist Jerry Only , as well as guitarists Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein and Acey Slade in addition to drummer Dave Lombardo ), the group has only performed 16 times, the first being at Riot Fest in Denver, Colorado.

The new dates are set for June 24 (Megadeth and Fear as support), July 8 ( The Gaslight Anthem and Fear as support) and July 15 (AFI and Fear as support) and you can view more details further down the page.

Members of the Misfits Fiend Club will have the first opportunity to grab tickets through an exclusive pre-sale that runs from March 22 at 10AM ET through March 23 at 10PM ET. The band indicates fans can use the password FIEND   to score early tickets at the corresponding ticket links to each show as listed below.

Look for the general on-sale to being on March 24 at 10AM local time at Live Nation .

The Dirty Knobs

Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits, the third album by Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs, opens with a song about the one thing every rock band on the road needs to feel alive and going forward, night after night: the crowd.

"Look at this place, look at these faces," Campbell sings through droning jangle in the acid- ballroom march "The Greatest," marveling at the "amazing grace" of "voices raised together" the guitarist has experienced with his band at every stop for the last three years – and before that, in four decades with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. "The Greatest" is one of eleven new songs co-produced by Campbell with Petty-studio veteran George Drakoulias – the same view from the stage in the Beatles' overture to themselves on Sgt.Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, except Campbell and the Dirty Knobs are firing all of that joy and wonder back at the fans.

"We had just come off a tour, and I wanted to write something for them, to say, 'You are the greatest, thanks for coming,'" Campbell explains. "I'm so proud of my legacy," referring to that previous lifetime of hits and tours. "But I'm creating my own music and direction with this band. I'm grateful that there's an audience for what we're doing, and I wanted to put that in a song, to start the record: 'Let's go on this journey together.'"

Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits ends like a gig too. "Amanda Lynn" is a brief dance of mandolins originally recorded as the walk-out music at Dirty Knobs shows. Inbeween, Campbell, guitarist Chris Holt, bassist Lance Morrison and drummer Matt Laug have made the most expansive and dynamic album of the Dirty Knobs' one-of-a-kind ride: founded in 2000 by the leader as a writing and club-date project outside the Heartbreakers; finally getting on record with 2020's Wreckless Abandon and 2022's External Combustion, both made with Drakoulias.

Those LPs, Campbell says, were the Dirty Knobs (named after tech slang for a broken amp dial) "trying to find our way as a rock & roll band. Now it's down to great songs, the depth in the lyrics and chords." He recalls something Petty once told him: "Tom said, 'I love the English language. There's so much you can do with it.' I'm discovering that too. Looking for rhyme schemes, the right words – at first, it was a struggle.

"Now that door has opened," he says. "I've turned a corner" on Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits. The Dirty Knobs are "still a rock band but growing into different feels."

That includes the hard-rock seesaw of desperation, regret and time signatures in "Hands Are Tied" and the bruised-country ballad "Hell or High Water," a one-night stand wreathed in misty- morning strings and sung by Campbell in dusky, empathic duet with an old friend of Petty and the Heartbreakers, Lucinda Williams. "Innocent Man" is another song of the road with strafing- treble guitars and a true story behind the second verse – Petty and the Heartbreakers' full border- search treatment by U.S. customs on one tour – while "My Old Friends" is honky-tonk wordplay, Campbell having top-shelf fun with the many brands of firewater named after people.

Then there's Graham Nash, bringing his history in harmonies and Sixties idealism with the Hollies and Crosby, Stills and Nash to the urgent, chiming guitars in "Dare to Dream." Nash was a guest on "The Breakdown," Campbell's interview show on Sirius XM's Tom Petty Radio, when "I got up the courage," the host recalls, "to ask him, 'Would you be interested in singing on one of my songs?' He said, 'Yeah, I'll make your song better.'" Campbell laughs. "And he did! It sounds like the Hollies."

"Dare to Dream" was "perfect for him," Campbell adds, "because it's about hope and redemption in a wicked world. I don't write a lot of happy songs. But a lot of Tom's songs in the Heartbreakers – even though the characters and stories were dark, there was hope in the end, that it's gonna work out. 'Dare to Dream' is a simple idea: It's gonna be okay if you hang on to hope."

Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits is proof in the grooves, a record of songs forged in changes and turning points. It's Campbell's first album with Chris "Sidewinder" Holt, who joined the Dirty Knobs in 2022 for the touring on External Combustion and has added keyboards to the armory along with clear, sharp harmonies and a garage-guitar attack that fortifies the staccato riffing in "So Alive" and makes the double-time frenzy in "Shake These Blues" sound like the Byrds' covering the 1966 nugget "Psychotic Reaction." Holt is "really good at our approach" which, Campbell notes, is light on planning and all about the moment. "My thing is, 'Don't take the track home and work out the solo. We're going to cut it now. When we get to the solo, do something.'"

Campbell also points to "the last two minutes" in "Shake These Blues": that brawny, walking bass in the raveup, the way Paul Samwell-Smith used to stalk Eric Clapton's explosive soloing in the Yardbirds. "That's Crawdaddy," Campbell says proudly – a/k/a Lance Morrison, a Dirty Knob since he and Laug, a tag-team rhythm section on sessions and tours, joined in 2004. "He's our backbone, a killer. He's really important to the band. I don't think I'd carry on if he ever left."

Laug, in fact, took off after Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits was all but finished to become the drummer in AC/DC. "He couldn't turn down his dream gig of all time," Campbell admits. "It would be like me going back and joining the Beatles. I said, 'Matt, before you do that, cut this record with us. I know it will go real fast.'" And it did – until Campbell's wife Marcie suggested the guitarist take a look in his "analog tape locker," as he puts it. "She said, 'I think you locked some gems in there.'"

Campbell estimates that he and the Dirty Knobs had already recorded "about 25 songs" for the album. "But then I found these old tapes, done 15 years ago or more, things that never hit Tom's table, that I'd set aside and forgotten." Among them: "Dare to Dream," "Hands Are Tied" and "Don't Wait Up," a freight-train boogie that now features a return engagement by Chris Stapleton – he sang on Wreckless Abandon – and Benmont Tench, Campbell's bandmate in the Heartbreakers, on piano. "Chris came in and sang a verse, then Ben came over one day and slapped that Jerry Lee Lewis on it," the guitarist says with delight.

And if the assured stomp behind those blues-army guitars in "Angel of Mercy" reminds you of Campbell's other band, that's because the drummer is Steve Ferrone, Campbell's rhythm brother in the Heartbreakers for more than 20 years and an original member of the Dirty Knobs when Campbell started the band as a trio with Heartbreaker bassist Ron Blair. "Angel of Mercy" was a song "we used to play in clubs," the guitarist says, "and I tried to get it on the first two records but never got the track right. This album was finished, but then Drakoulias said, 'We really oughta do this song.' Matt was gone, so Steve helped us out."

Ferrone has been playing shows with the band in recent months and will be there, Campbell says, when he and the Dirty Knobs take Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits on the road: "When Steve came in to do that song, he said, 'Can I have my seat back?' 'Yeah, man, you're in the band.' Fans love it when they see Steve up there. It means a lot to see some of that old connection."

But, Campbell insists, "When we go on tour, a major portion of the set will be the new album." The guitarist will be out there, playing for the greatest. On Vagabonds, Virgins & Misfits, he's bringing them his best.

Heart postpones remainder of 2024 tour dates, including Knoxville show. Here’s why

official misfits tour

Rock band Heart likely won’t be coming to Knoxville this Augus t as planned. The band has postponed its highly anticipated reunion tour.

“As of today, Heart’s Royal Flush Tour is postponed due to medical reasons,” the band announced July 2 in a message shared to its official social media accounts.

“Fans are encouraged to hold on to their tickets as they will be honored for the rescheduled dates. More information to be announced in the coming week,” the message continued.

Heart was scheduled to play Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center Aug. 24. Food City Center shared Heart's p o st announcing the postponement.

Helmed by sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, the band kicked off a massive reunion tour in April. The “Royal Flush Tour” was the band’s first set of live shows since 2019.

Why did Heart postpone the Royal Flush Tour?

Ann Wilson announced June 2 that she underwent an operation to remove something that turned out to be cancerous. She is doing fine, she told her fans, but is electing to undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy as advised by her doctors.

"And so my doctors are instructing me to take the rest of the year away from the stage in order to fully recover," Wilson said in a statement shared on her Instagram account.

"To the ticket buyers, I really do wish we could do these gigs. Please know that I absolutely plan to be back on stage in 2025. My team is getting those details sorted & we'll let you know the plan as soon as we can. Thank you all for the support. This is merely a pause. I've much more to sing," the statement continued.

Heart is known for hit songs such as "Alone,” "Barracuda," “Crazy on You” and "Magic Man.” They have sold more than 35 million albums since debuting in the '70s and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2013.

Frederik and Mary in Greenland

Queen Mary and King Frederik cosy up together on royal tour

The danish royal couple made an official visit to greenland.

Danielle Stacey

King Frederik and Queen Mary carried out a week-long tour of Greenland in a significant milestone for the couple in the first six months of Frederik's reign.

The Danish royals, who celebrated their 20 th wedding anniversary in May, were very tactile with one another on their trip.

Photos shared on their official Instagram account show the pair cuddled up together during a coffee morning in the village of Qassiarsuk.

Other snaps showed Frederik and Mary with their arms around one another as they boarded a boat and enjoyed a scenic walk along the coastline.

The pair were also joined by their 13-year-old twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine , earlier on the tour, where they visited an Arctic research station and took part in a family fun day in Qeqertarsuaq.

Their royal visit to Greenland came just days after the king and queen celebrated Crown Prince Christian 's high school graduation, with the couple spotted wrapping their arms around each other as they left the ceremony.

Take a look at the cosiest pictures of Frederik and Mary from their Greenland trip below…

This special, highly limited collector’s edition 45, appropriately titled “Psycho in the Wax Museum” contains two rare, never before released tracks archived on clear vinyl with a picture sleeve featuring all-new artwork rendered by Butch Lukic!

Loyal fiends who’ve shown their support to the Misfits Records label and our roster of artists will now be rewarded with this very special and exclusive offer! Those who purchased our previous releases, “Misfits Project 1950” and “Balzac: Beyond the Darkness” were advised to save your proof of purchase seals. The third and final proof of purchase can now be found inside the debut release from Osaka Popstar entitled “Osaka Popstar and the American Legends of Punk” - in stores now! Redeem all 3 P.O.P. seals together and you'll receive this collectible vinyl Misfits 45 that will NOT be available anywhere else … period!

As our personal thanks to you, this 45 will be exclusive only to those who redeem all 3 original proof of purchase seals.

Yes fiends, JUST FOR YOU we’ve unearthed 2 never before released and never before completed Misfits tracks predating the American Psycho album! “Angel Baby” ( Click here for a Real Player clip ) and “Death of the Fallen Angel” ( Click here for a streaming MP3 clip ) were both written by founding member Jerry Only and properly recorded by the Misfits in their entirety prior to the release of American Psycho but the vocal tracks were never recorded. For that reason, the recordings were shelved and left in the vaults, seemingly never to be heard ... until now. The rough mixes in their original instrumental form, untouched and exactly as they were left over a decade ago, have been restored from a deteriorating source, digitally re-mastered and preserved in this vinyl 45 “wax museum” for your sole enjoyment ... FREE OF CHARGE!

The ONLY way to get it is to redeem all 3 proof of purchase seals! Please note that the “Misfits Project 1950” CD proof of purchase is the sticker (found on the outside of the shrink wrap of the CD case), which says "save this as proof of purchase". That proof of purchase sticker has always been on the Project 1950 CD and it is still available on the CD that you find in stores today. You must have that sticker; there will be no exceptions.

The Balzac Beyond the Darkness CD proof of purchase was also a sticker found on the outside of the shrink-wrap of the CD case. It too says "save this sticker as proof of purchase". We are aware that this Balzac CD has been issued in some instances without the sticker on the shrink-wrap. Due to that, to give everyone a fair chance, ONLY in the case of the Balzac “Beyond the Darkness” CD you will be allowed to send in EITHER the sticker from the shrink-wrap that says "proof of purchase" OR you can cut out the original UPC bar code (with the Misfits Records logo above it and the Japanese “Yami” symbol to the right of it), from the back cover of the CD and use that as your proof of purchase. That Balzac proof of purchase will be the ONLY exception.

For Misfits Project 1950 you must have the “proof of purchase” sticker and for Osaka Popstar you must have the proof of purchase seal found on the flyer/insert inside the CD. Every Osaka Popstar CD purchased new at retail contains the proof of purchase insert inside.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW IMAGES OF THE 3 VAILD PROOF OF PURCHASE SEALS REQUIRED FOR THIS OFFER.

Only the North American pressings of the three above mentioned Misfits Records released CDs contain the applicable proof of purchase seals required for this promotional offer. All of these releases were domestic to the USA are available for purchase at the Misfits Records online store .

Additionally, Jerry appeared for a signing at the Nady Systems booth endorsing their new U33B Wireless Bass System. Jerry had this to say about the new bass system from Nady: "We've only used one wireless...NADY. The unit itself got smaller but with their new Bass Boost feature on the U33B wireless, the sound is even BIGGER. It's got a monster crunch sound regardless of the volume of the amp. It hits you right in the gut where the Bass should. You can feel it. The power of this new wireless will rattle your bones." - Jerry Only

BRAND NEW MISFITS STUDIO ALBUM IN THE WORKS!

What reviewers are saying about Misfits meet the Nutley Brass: Fiend Club Lounge: "Fiend Club Lounge features frankly piss-funny lounge-lizard reworkings of Misfits classics...Evil has never sounded so damn kitsch. Find it." - Paul Travers, Kerrang! "Ahh, this is genius. This is a really cool, fun CD and a definite must for hardcore Misfits fans." - Ben Snakepit, Razorcake "This album is absolute genius...ridiculously funny." - Shane Farver, Slugmag "Truly beyond type-able description, FIEND CLUB LOUNGE is simply... well absolutely, seam-splitting, pants-pizzilingly HYSTERICAL!" 4 Stars. - Gary Vermin, Horrorwood Babble on.com "after popping 'Fiend Club Lounge' into the ol' disc player in my car, I came within 5 feet of hitting a tree, after hearing the first 20 seconds of 'Last Caress'. For Misfits completists, this recording is a must have. If there is a Misfits fiend in your life, these lounge lizard interpretations will bring joy and uncontrollable laughter to their life. Imagine Tom Jones' back up orchestra playing out the music of bands like the Buzzcocks, Minor Threat, Black Flag, the Ramones, and the Misfits. Makes you chuckle just thinking about it, doesn't it? In short, the music is SO wrong, it's right. ---the Fiend Club Lounge is open for business, baby, so throw on your red smoking jackets and fez caps! If you are a Misfits fan, AND disturbing things make you smile, behold your Holy Grail." Rated in terms of twisted hilarity: 94 points. - DeadSun, Antimusic.com "sly, clever, and occasionally laugh-out-loud funny...there's no denying it's a hoot." - Keith Bergman, Blabbermouth.net "The first thing you need to understand about this release is that it is meant to be tongue and cheek. It's not meant to be a serious interpretation of the Misfits music; it's just meant to be fun. ...sounds like something Goldie Hawn would have danced to during the breaks on Laugh-In...could have easily fit in with the musical Grease or any Frankie Avalon movie. The Nutley Brass does an outstanding job of interpreting the Misfits music in an unconventional style. After hearing the Nutley Brass' version of 'Die Die My Darling' I realized it may not be so bad to die. If you enter the lounge with an open mind and a fondness for the Misfits, you're sure to have a good time. If you're someone that takes your music seriously you might not get what this CD is all about." 4 out of 5 Stars. -George Dionne, Rock-is-life.com "you need this most amazing cover CD by the Nutley Brass. This is a fun CD to listen to, one of those guilty pleasures that you just cannot let go of...this was honestly a great idea and Ryko did well to want to put this out. If you have an open mind and a sense of humor, you will check this out." 9/10 - Jeffrey Easton, Metal-Exiles.com "The collection reinterprets the Misfits as kitsch for the cocktail lounge, suggesting 1960s instrumental classics like Herb Alpert's Whipped Cream & Other Delights or anything from gonzo bandleader Juan Garcia Esquivel. Sam Elwitt, the composer behind Nutley Brass, has actually been at this awhile. He also did an album of instrumental pop Ramones covers, the highlight of which was a hilarious elevator music version of "Blitzkrieg Bop" that a nun could hum along to. "Hilarious" is right: Elwitt never gets too serious with his Nutley material, so there's no reason for punk rock purists to get bent out of shape over Fiend Club Lounge. It's a novelty that happens to be well written and kind of entertaining." 3 out of 5 - Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide "a collection of Misfits tracks performed so innocently that I wouldn't be surprised to hear them over the PA at my local department store. 'Teenagers From Mars' is probably about as weird as you could imagine, performed like the opening moments of a Broadway musical. 'Die, Die My Darling' closes out the album, performed like it should accompany the climax in a James Bond movie. Fiend Club Lounge is clearly a novelty performance; it has no pretensions about supplanting the Misfits, or even standing alone as a work, but for fans, it's a fun, and -- dare I say it -- 'cute' look at the Misfits." 3 out of 3 stars. Aubin, Punk News.org "First you heard about RICHARD CHEESE, then you heard about PAUL ANKA, but before these guys, there was THE NUTLEY BRASS. Brass is exactly what it takes, to take classic era MISFITS songs and render them into lounge music, brass balls, that is...those out there that are true fans of musicianship will absolutely love and appreciate the talent and creativity that it took to make a CD like this happen. I am a long time Misfits fan...it absolutely did not disappoint me." 5 Stars - Paragon Rob, Foundry Music.com "the Zombie masters are being paid homage to by their own stateside, NJ brothers The Nutley Brass Section just adds a whole new light to some of the classic Misfits music. 'Last Caress' is a kick especially after having the Metallica one drilled in the head this lightens up the whole vibe. 'Some Kind Of Hate' sounds like it could be in a horror movie or a follow up to Animal House. They close the thing out with 'Die, Die My Darling' and I'm floored. If you even take a dare to step over a musical line then you love this as if you like lounge music. We need more lounge music these days. This is a record that made my ears tune into different sounds and a cool tribute to the Jersey Phnom known as The Misfits." 3 Stars - Hammerhead Zine.com "You've heard their music covered by bands like AFI and more famously, Metallica; however, I bet Misfits have never been tweaked so uniquely by anyone as Sam Elwitt's Nutley Brass with their new tribute ...Fiend Club Lounge. It wasn't until a couple of minutes into 'Last Caress' that I realized I was listening to more than just a twisted tribute to Misfits music. While one might think the album was a humorous effort designed to fill a niche, there's actually a great respect for Misfits and their effect on the entire music scene from metal to ... well ... lounge. The weirdest thing for me was that I could almost hear Wayne Newton or Tom Jones singing the lyrics to 'Die, Die My Darling' and 'Hatebreeders,' which says a lot for the way the Nutley Brass played out their versions of these songs. Instrumentally, this album gave me chills. Fiend Club Lounge is well-rehearsed, expertly revised and the sinister undertones certainly put it on my list of the most original tribute albums of all time. If you're walking the line between our reality and the dark dimension, I recommend this record ... if for no other reason than to freak out your friends!" 3 & a half stars. - John Foxworthy, Garage Radio Jerry Only comments on Fiend Club Lounge :  "If Cat women from the moon landed in Tijuana in the 60's this is the kind of music they would march to! The Nutley Brass version of 'Die, Die My Darling' is swirling with 007 suspense like the soundtrack of an early James Bond movie. The horns seem to jet out like one of the old albums from the Tijuana Brass. Classic, I repeat, CLASSIC." Original Misfits guitarist Franché Coma comments: "I will say this: 'Misfits meet the Nutley Brass: Fiend Club Lounge' is one of the best renditions of some of the best Misfits songs ever recorded. Any true, and I mean true musician will appreciate the intricacies of the instrumentations on this CD. It takes punk music to a different level. It shows us how anything is possible if you want to make it happen. You'll think you are listening to a soundtrack from a big screen movie. A great lush theatrical feel. I compliment the engineers, the producers and everyone involved with this production. OUTSTANDING JOB!!! I was truly, truly, impressed! They should be proud of this release." Mpetshi Perricard’s serve – how Musetti broke it, and why Arthur Fils knows it best

Follow live coverage of the ninth day of Wimbledon 2024 today

WIMBLEDON — Over the course of seven stunning days, it has become the most lethal shot in tennis.

It’s a serve which comes off the racket of a French 21-year-old named Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, and the player waiting for it needs to hit it back over the net.

Or, get, cajole, persuade, will, pray it back over.

It’s a rocket blast that can be hard to see, much less get a racket on, let alone return over a piece of mesh 3ft high from 39ft away.

As for making a quality return to take control of a point, or doing it enough times to win a game when Mpetshi Perricard is serving? For seven days, that looked like an impossibility for everyone in the draw.

Except, maybe, for the one player left in the draw who already knows how to pick the Mpetshi Perricard service lock. He’s another Frenchman, a year younger than Mpetshi Perricard, who is having the breakout Grand Slam run that so many have been expecting of him for more than a year.

That would be Arthur Fils, Mpetshi Perricard’s best friend since the two were 10-year-old standouts palling around in France’s national tennis training program. But Fils  isn’t about to share any of the secrets he has picked up over all those years with the rest of the field.

Some numbers. Mpetshi Perricard, who is 6 ft 8 (203cm), has hit 105 aces in three matches, including 51 in his first-round win over Sebastian Korda, No. 20 seed here at the All England Club and one of the world’s better grass court players.

He’s winning 85 per cent of his first-serve points. He’s lost three sets but only one that hasn’t gone to a tiebreaker. He’s tied with Ben Shelton for the fastest serve in the tournament at 140mph but even Shelton puts Mpetshi Perricard’s serve in a different class than his, in part because the Frenchman’s second serve can come across the net at 128mph sometimes.

“Ridiculous,” is how Shelton describes the Mpetshi Perricard offering.

“He basically hits two first serves.”

The status of the big serve, or flat bomb, or boom boom if you’re Boris Becker, has declined in the last two decades. These are not the days of Pete Sampras and so many like him, who sailed to Grand Slam titles on a diet of unreturned serves and tiebreaks won when they needed to, but more often just got one game on the opponent’s serve and considered their work done until the scoreboard told them that they had to start a new set.

go-deeper

'They slow things down in their minds': How tennis players return 130mph serves

Four men called Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are mostly responsible for that decline. If you serve a ball faster than 135mph and your first sight when you come out of the motion is the ball you just hit arriving very hard and fast at your ankles, seemingly harder and faster, your days of winning tennis matches are likely on the way out.

In contemporary tennis, the word on people’s lips is “servebot”: an at least mildly derogatory and definitely apathetic term for a player who is essentially unbreakable because their serve is so good, but who is also essentially unlikeable because a hypereffective trebuchet for tennis balls is basically all they have.

Mpetshi Perricard is not that guy. He can move. His volley stings. He has studied videos of the biggest servers, especially John Isner, but watching Ivo Karlovic, who was about seven feet tall, is “a little boring,” he said.

official misfits tour

For those seven days at Wimbledon, Fils and Mpetshi Perricard were living out a dream together while trying very hard to not dream; to not think past the next match, even the next set, or game or point that each of them will play.

They are constantly texting each other, and they eat dinner together at tournaments just about every night if their schedules allow. Mpetshi Perricard quickly received Fils’ text after the latter beat Roman Safiullin to make the second week of the a Grand Slam for the first time.

Mpetshi Perricard’s coach, Emmanuel Planque, said no one on the planet has spent more time with Mpetshi Perricard on a tennis court than Fils has.

Fils said Planque was 100 per cent right, which means he has seen and returned more of Mpetshi Perricard’s serves than anyone on the planet.

“He teaches me how to return,” Fils said of Mpetshi Perricard, after a freak knee injury forced No.7 seed Hubert Hurkacz to retire from their second-round match, with Fils holding match point in the fourth set.

“It’s good practice.”

On the eighth day, the reality of professional tennis forced them to wake up. Fils succumbed to Alex de Minaur in the fourth round, a player he beat at the Barcelona Open in April, but on clay, which is the Australian’s least-favorite surface.

De Minaur, the No. 9 seed, loves grass because it allows him to capitalize on his speed and sublime movement while keeping his hard, flat shots nice and low. He used that to full effect on Fils, despite an admirable rally from the Frenchman in the fourth set, winning 6-2, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

official misfits tour

Mpetshi Perricard faced Lorenzo Musetti, the rising Italian who has quietly put together a solid grass season.

Musetti was a semifinalist in Stuttgart and a finalist at Queen’s, and this is his first Wimbledon second week. Despite saying he felt lost on the stuff a year ago, Musetti has a higher win-rate on grass and clay than on hard courts, and he has a game that suits the surface too. Not just a knifing backhand slice  and a good serve, but an economy of movement when returning serve that takes his complicated forehand and one-handed backhand out of the equation. He chips and carves and blocks the ball back, ready to put his tools to good use in rallies, where they will actually be effective.

“I don’t know, I’m just focused on the next one,” Mpetshi Perricard said when asked how far he could go after beating Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland in four sets on Saturday.

“I already lost to Musetti, so I don’t know.”

Sure, but Mpetshi Perricard already lost at Wimbledon, too. He lost his final match in qualifying to Maxime Janvier, another Frenchman, in four sets — three of which went to a tiebreak. Then, Mpetshi Perricard ended up with one of the “lucky loser” spots that arise when a player withdraws at the last minute. He was in the locker room after a practice session last Saturday when a tournament official called him to ask if he’d like to play in the Wimbledon main draw for the first time.

Was he nervous? Not at all, he said. A good opportunity, no pressure, a great experience.

Since then, Mpetshi Perricard and his serve have become unstoppable forces with no immovable objects in sight. He hits that first serve like he is smacking a rock with a frying pan, then watches it slash to the corners of the service box. Opponents just let their eyes drop to the grass and move to the other side of the court.

Fils doesn’t have a bad serve himself but their bodies and their games are completely different.

Fils, who grew up near Paris, is an all-court player with a build in in the goldilocks zone of the all-time greats. A little over six-feet tall, a perfectly crafted athlete who desperately wanted to play striker and score goals for Paris Saint-Germain, but wasn’t quite good enough.

official misfits tour

Mpetshi Perricard, who is from Lyon, is in the mould of the new generation of tennis humans like Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev. Closer to seven feet tall than six, they look a bit out of place on a tennis court, until they start serving, their long arms and spines giving them extra leverage to snap balls down from on high.

Mpetshi Perricard also played a little soccer, dabbling in basketball and swimming before focusing on tennis, mostly because he was better at it than the other sports and believed he could exploit his strength and size while learning the movement.

That part of the game is still a work in progress for Mpetshi Perricard, Planque said. His serve has been his biggest weapon since he and Fils were pre-teens working with Planque and other national coaches at France’s Tennis Federation, along with a few other top players their age, including Arthur Cazaux and Luca Van Assche. They are a bit like the young and coming Italians, led by Jannik Sinner, who pushed each other through their junior years and at regional tournaments on the lower rungs of the sport.

Planque knows that Mpetshi Perricard is always going ride on his serve.

“ He doesn’t want to play long rallies,” he said. “The goal is to be aggressive from the first shot.”

He also wants him coming to the net at every chance, even serving and volleying, a dying art that most players only use as a surprise tactic.

“I’m an old-style coach,” Planque said.

Old-style too is one of Mpetshi Perricard’s groundstrokes. Like Musetti, he is the rare young player who uses a one-handed backhand — even though he now wishes he didn’t, looking enviously at Isner’s two-hander on those videos. As Musetti learned, making service returns with one hand is a struggle.

official misfits tour

And while his first serve is the star, improving his second was one of his main goals coming into this season. He crushes the first ball and if he misses, he tries to do something a little different with the second one, which is averaging 117 mph. Maybe he’ll put a little spin on it or go down the middle or into the body, rather than going out wide, which he so often does with his first ball.

“It works for now,” he said last week after the win over Ruusuvuori. “We’ll see if, against the top player, it’s going to work.”

He did see, and he didn’t like what was in front of his eyes. Musetti won the serve battle, taking 79 per cent of first-serve points to Mpetshi Perricard’s 67, amd 84 per cent of second-serve points to Mpetshi Perricard’s 53.

He won the return battle too. 32 per cent of first-serve return points to Mpetshi Perricard’s 20 per cent; 33 per cent of second-serve return points to Mpetshi Perricard’s 16 per cent.

After the match, Musetti agreed that facing the serve is like being a goalkeeper in a penalty shootout, and said that his coach had explained that to break, he would need to have the cushion of 0-40, not relying on 30-40 or even 15-40 as a chance, because it could so easily be snatched away. Musetti had to pick his moment of comfort, before the discomfort began again in the next game.

That’s not just for now. Mpetshi Perricard’s serve looks set to be discomfiting top returners for many years to come.

As for Fils, he might be getting some texts from other players soon.
