Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

We took the Key West Hop-On Hop-Off Trolley 1-day pass on an extremely rainy and stormy day, and it turned out to be the best experience! Despite the challenging weather, our driver navigated the flooded streets expertly. Each trolley is equipped with plastic windows that roll down to keep passengers dry, which was a huge relief. What made the experience truly enjoyable was that the rain didn't deter the tour guides. They continued to give informative and engaging tours, even though no one was getting on or off and the windows were foggy. After a few hours, the weather cleared up, and we were able to enjoy the tour again, making the traditional stops and experiencing different drivers/guides. Throughout the day, we had five different drivers, each putting their own unique spin on the information about each area. Our party of four included someone who has difficulty walking, but this tour allowed them to see the town and take in the sights comfortably. A couple of things to keep in mind for those that have difficulty walking, you will need to get off the trolley a few times, either for specific stops or when a driver reaches the end of their route. Overall, this was an excellent way to explore Key West, regardless of the weather!

If you go to Key West, you definitely need to do this! It's a 90 minute tour of Key West and you will learn so so so much! You can get on and off all day long for one price! We thought it was really expensive but worth every penny! We actually road it twice for 90 minutes in one day with different drivers! Super informative and super fun! Lots of fresh air too!

I am so glad I bought the ticket to this trolly trip because there was no way I would have finished the whole island in half of day ! I would have end up staying overnight & missed my bus back to a Miami ! I had so much fun! the drivers were wonderful & so much fun . Very helpful too. Got to see a lot in 4 hours on this Trolly trip .

It was an ok tour around town. I think the section in the new town section was long and had little information. I did learn a handful of interesting facts on the tour, but expected more.

We had a good time riding the trolley around the island. It is great that you are able to hop on and off all day, making exploring easy and fun. We felt the price was a bit steep, but I guess it goes along being in a heavily visited place like Key West.

I was apprehensive about paying for the trolley, thinking we could just navigate the free city bus system. However, I am glad we did the trolley! It was so easy to navigate, and if you found some good spots, you could just walk to the next trolley spot. They are every 30 minutes, so it's easy to time too! We were so lucky to have Bailey for most of our trolley tour, he was so personable and FULL of knowledge! The best part, is if you time it out right, you'll end at stop one right as the sunset festival is starting. The festival is every night of the year, with music and vendors!

Inexpensive 5 stars hop on hop off trolley. The driver gives some informative history about Key West. The ride took about 1 and half . We passed alot off interesting spots. We rode the first time completely around ,then reboarded another trolley and got off at the Boardwalk and had lunch. I suggest you book this because it's inexpensive and you get to see the city .

Louie made the trip for us. He made everything better with his monologue of the area and culture changes.

Hello, we're so happy to hear you had a great time with Louie! We love reading about our guests' experiences so thank you for taking the time to share this one. We hope you'll be back!

We did the Christmas trolley tour in the monsoon rain! It was a great time except to incredibly obnoxious drunk ladies who were screaming their own Christmas songs over the Christmas songs the trolley was playing but thankfully Patrick the trolley guide stopped the tour and told the lady this was not her concert and saved the day haha!!! it was truly a great time. The only bumper was the rain shields were down so it wasn't easy to see the Christmas lights but that is not their fault, it was raining really hard. Our only complaint is for old town trolleys in general we've been here a week and we just wish you could buy a path for a couple days (3-5 and at a reasonable rate like $75 not $250) not just one day, at a more affordable rate for people who have already done the trolley tour and just want something they can hop on and hop off throughout their vacation. The trolleys always have lots of room and we suggested this to the company.

2-19-22 3:00 PM Ok totally transparency between us Yelpers I have taken this Trolley many times over the past 40 years coming here. However this visit was not planned. I was visiting for the day with my friend who is a local. We are not great drinkers so only one very strong drink later we got on the Trolley figuring it will sober us up. Her being a Local we got a major discount note you have to show your license with proof you live here but major perk for us. The tour covered the entire island as well as an extensive history about the island going all the way back to the earlier inhabitants to today. Past tours pointed out famous peoples homes present day no. I guess in respect for their privacy. The tour started at Mallory Square and you can hop on and off the entire day. Since we really just wanted to stay on we did it from start to finish about two hours. Truthfully if I had the time I would definitely get on in the AM get off at Smathers Beach, Hemingway House. Truman's House the Little White House and the Butterfly World. I love taking in the architecture and the gingerbread detail on the houses. They go by the Southern Most Point as well as Duval and all the famous bars my favorites are Sloppy Joe's stopped later for a St. Patrick Day's T for 2022 for hubby his one from 2013 looks a bit worn lol. Also the Green Parrot is a must stop. Definitely will take the trolley on my next visit to Key West especially as parking is very difficult so this is great as it gets you everywhere you want to go!

Key West Old Town Trolley Tours

There’s no better way to see all of Key West than with Old Town Trolley Tours.

The island of Key West is full of fun and exciting things to do and see. From the Southernmost Point to the quaint streets of Old Town, our tour takes you to all the major areas and attractions. See Key West’s first tourist attraction, the Key West Aquarium, which was also the world’s first open air aquarium. Cross the street and you’ll find yourself back in the 1800s at the Key West Shipwreck Treasure Museum, learning about how Key West became one of the richest cities in the US. The Oldest House Museum is also nearby; it is one of the many beautifully restored homes that are open to the public in Key West.

Stop by the Ernest Hemingway House Museum where he is rumored to have written A Farewell to Arms — and don’t forget to look for the 6 or 7 toed cats! Marvel at the beautiful species of butterflies in the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, and wander next door to the Southernmost House Mansion and Museum, known for its 19th century architecture and tropical gardens. Cool off with a drink at the famous Sloppy Joe’s Bar or Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville in the Old Town area. But don’t leave Key West until you’ve watched the sunset from Mallory Square, a truly memorable experience!

Old Town Trolley Tours Key West 4.4

old town trolley key west reviews

What Our Guests are Saying

“Every place I wanted to see was part of the tour. For sure we will do this again.”

S & K.H., Waldorf, MD

“Hello, on a recent trip to Key West we had the opportunity to take an old town trolley tour. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Our guide Louie, was most informative and so funny at the same time. He made the tour one of the best we’ve ever been on. Of course the history of Key West was very good but the highlight was our guide Louie. I could see the other passengers on the trolley just waiting on his next comments and his delivery was exceptional from a local’s standpoint! This was a first class tour and you can tell him we said so!”

S.H., Plainview, NE

“Mr. History is by far the best guide we have ever had. My wife and I are history nerds and not that we are knowledgeable but we just like getting the history wherever we go on vacation. Mr. History was an absolute well of knowledge. He saved our rainy day and made it the best day of the trip.”

B.V., Melbourne, FL:

“I just want to start off by saying my family and I had an amazing time in the keys. Being that I’m a Florida native and it was my first time there for my daughter and I, it was if not more, absolutely more than what I had expected. Secondly, I wanted to say that Chris (the one with the beard and wore high tops) went way above and beyond for us! He made my 3 year old the happiest I’ve ever seen when he took care of us. She had never been on a trolley or train and she was just so excited I could see her eyes light up like the Fourth of July. Southern hospitality at its absolute finest. I can’t wait until we get to visit again. I know we’ll for sure be looking for Chris so we can say hello and thank him again! Thank you key west for being amazing.”

S.F., Long Beach, MS:

“We were treated to an excellent tour experience in Key West by Jeff on 9/6/19. My wife left her favorite sunglasses case on the trolley. We saw Jeff on 9/7 and he coordinated the return of the case by Troy in the main office. We appreciate their willingness to go above and beyond to lend us a hand. Thank you, Jeff and Troy. We will never forget your kindness.”

“To get away from the cold and snow of Michigan, my wife and I recently spent a few weeks meandering through Georgia, Florida and Tennessee. We went to Savannah first and the Visitor Center recommended taking an Old Town Trolley tour. It was the best thing we did as somebody who had never been to this beautiful and historic southern city. The guide was informative and entertaining and helped us see the highlights of Savannah and plan what we wanted to do once we got off the trolley.

Our next stops were St. Augustine and Key West. We enjoyed the experience so much in Savannah that the first thing we did was get on your trolleys in both of these cities. While you are subject to the style and personality of the driver, and some were better than others, but on the whole, mostly good, the idea of seeing the highlights of a town before experiencing it on foot were well worth it each time. Our last stop was Nashville and, again, we learned a lot about the city through an Old Town Trolley before embarking on foot to get up close and personal.

We didn’t plan on going to four cities where Old Town Trolley operates, but after the Savannah experience, we kept getting on your trolleys and can’t say enough about how good they were for setting the stage for an enjoyable experience after getting off. I don’t think we would have embraced each of the cities as much if we hadn’t taken an Old Town Trolley tour first.

I just want to tell you how good we think your tours are and how much we enjoyed them. We will certainly recommend them to any of our friends.”

”We had the pleasure of having Juni as our tour guide on Saturday. What a great tour she provided. I’ve always wondered who are the people in the world who love their job. She definitely does. She had such enthusiasm for Key West… Please let her know what a great asset she is to your tour company and to keep up the good work. She was wonderful!”

J.M., El Paso, TX:

“We had Luis as our tour guide. First time visit to Key West so I don’t know what the rest of your guides are like, but Luis was the highlight of our visit. When I come back to Key West I will be looking him up to take the tour again. He was informative and very funny. Thanks Luis for the great time.”

“Good Morning, My wife & I took your tour of Key West on Sunday… Never having been to Key West we thought that this was a good way to initially experience the island, as we had limited time due to our cruise. Your guide, Mr. Sawaya, was in no uncertain terms the best guide we have had on any excursion from a cruise ship; for that matter he ranks at the top of our list. Informative, funny, lively are just a few words to describe the narration”

“I want to express how impressed I was with the trolley tour in Key West. I enjoyed it so much I took the trolley tour 3 days of my trip. Jose was such a gentleman, so entertaining, what a delightful, fantastic tour guide; he gave the best of my three tours. Kristy obviously loves her job and it shows. Grace was full of energy even at the end of a 104 degree day. I want to thank you for such a wonderful experience…”

“Just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our recent tour in Key West. It was all that we expected after we took your San Diego tours a few years ago. I just wish you had a trolley in New Orleans. The tour we took there was a huge disappointment after using yours. Special cudos to your excellent guides. Please keep expanding to more cities.”

M.L., Adams, MA:

“Wife and I were recently in Key West for a week. After driving the island for a few days and finding it hard to park, the concierge at Days Inn suggested your narrated trolley tour. I really didn’t like the idea of a stuffy tour but we went anyway. After the first 5 minutes of laughing almost nonstop, we were hooked. We had a great time and your drivers were anything but stuffy. We got the two day tickets for the rest of our stay and fully plan on doing it again on our next trip down there. All of the drivers were informative and kept us all entertained, but Tim and Louie really kept us laughing. If the trolleys would run later at night it would be perfect, but we still tell everyone how much fun and how easy it was to get around Key West with the trolley. We will be back for a visit and will be riding the trolley again. Again, thank you for the experience. It will not be forgotten.”

“We really enjoyed your trolley tours on our recent trip to Key West. The tour guides were very entertaining. We need to give extra kudos to tour guide, LOUIS. He was hysterically funny! He had everyone on the trolley in tears from laughing so hard! Great tour guide!”

“My sister and I had the most wonderful time in Key West last week, and a major part of the wonder was the Old Town Trolley tour that we took throughout the day. We were so fortunate! First we got the amazing Wooden Nickel Hank; then, after a hiatus at Stop 1, we lucked into the entertaining and very educational Louie. After Louie took us around for awhile until we hopped off to make the obligatory visit to Papa’s house, we found to our delight that our next trolley was driven by none other than the great Hank! … Would you PLEASE do me a huge favor and give Hank a big Thank YOU! from the Rowdy one and her sister, and the same to Louie who really went the extra mile to ensure that my sister (who is a stroke-recovery patient) enjoyed her first taste of conch fritters while we waited at Stop 1. Both of these neat gentlemen went well beyond the bounds of usual and customary courtesy and customer service in assuring that we were comfortable and very happy. Appreciate it if you’d send this along! … Thanks again for a GREAT enhancement to our overnight sisterly runaway!”

H.R., Mableton, GA:

“My husband and I recently traveled to Key West for vacation. Neither of us had ever been to Key West before and had no idea how much great history this city has! Let me preface this note by saying that we are not typical “tour” people and we prefer to take in every new city on foot. By chance and the pure good luck of timing, we decided to take one of your trolley tours. We just had to drop you a quick note to say that we don’t think you charge enough for your tickets! It was such a wonderful and extremely educational experience. Our tour guide was Curry and he was phenomenal! It is amazing the detail that went into his tour explanation as well as the coordination it must take to drive the trolley and talk at the same time. I can’t imagine! He was extremely entertaining and personable. In a time when people are used to “mailing it in” every day, it was very refreshing to see someone so enthusiastic about their job. Curry was a stand out! Just wanted to drop a quick note to say that it MADE our vacation and we are now reformed “trolley tour” travelers. We will have to keep an eye out for your tours in other cities!”

“I wanted to write to you back in January; I visited your city for the first time between Christmas and New Years. I just made reservations for next year and that made me think of my tour. I had the most fun and informative tour of Key West due to our guide Marc. Being my first trip to Key West, I thought I would take a tour to get the lay of the land. I so enjoyed the tour and your gorgeous city, Marc being a great ambassador of Key West. I am so looking forward to my next visit, and hopefully another tour with Marc!”

B. & J. C., Islamorada, FL:

“Ladies and Gentlemen – We live in Islamorada, in the Keys, and took some visitors from North Carolina for their first visit to Key West a couple of days ago. As always, we took the Historic Trolley tour to get an overview of the City and to use as a “jump off-jump on” method of stopping to view subjects of interest. On two of our rides, we were lucky enough to have “Marc” as our tour guide and we wanted to tell you what a great job he did in representing your company to the public: he was customer-friendly, informative, professional, humorous, serious, polite and has a wonderfully appealing style of delivering his tour information to the public. You can be justifiably proud to have him on your team! We will be back with more visitors in the future and will look forward to riding on the Old Town Trolley.”

“Thoroughly enjoyed your service in Key West. This is our 3rd city to use your services and we have never been disappointed. We really enjoyed Claire as our guide. Very knowledgeable and a lot of fun. Gave us some great tips to help us make the most of our trip. She is a keeper for you! Geoff also did a very good job with the part he showed us. If we are in any of your other cities we will definitely use your service, it is outstanding!”

D.H., Key West, FL:

“I took my girlfriend on the trolley tour last Sunday and Marc was our conductor. He was fantastic and we enjoyed his stories. We live locally and I can say that even though we see the trolleys everyday, Marc’s stories were ones for us to enjoy too. Not just the tourist information that we usually hear from other tour guides. We will for sure take another tour, if Marc is the conductor. Thanks.”

“We were in Key West last week and had truly the world’s greatest tour guide, Mark. We were so impressed with his kindness, sense of humor and knowledge and pride of Key West that we remained on the trolley for the full 90 minutes!”

“We just returned from our vacation and did the Old Town Trolley Tour. It was great! We got off at a couple of stops (had Key Lime pie on a stick with chocolate that was fabulous!) and so got to experience more than one driver/guide. They were all great and the tour is a great way to see Key West in a short period of time…The trolley tour was an absolute bargain!”

R.R., England:

“Just like to say: brilliant, funny, great value for money; will recommend your tours to anybody going to Key West. Louie, David: very funny guys; had my wife laughing …thanks”

H. J., West End, NC:

“My wife and I visited Key West from Sep 30 to Oct 5. During that week we took a trolley ride. Our guide was Louie. He was delightful!!! His knowledge of the area was amazing and his rapport with the customers was excellent. He kept us laughing while giving us the information we wanted. Based on our experience with Louie, we will recommend a trolley ride to everyone we know who is planning on visiting Key West.”

J.P., Byron Center, MI:

“We thought the Key West tours were well-presented and informative.  Neither of us realized the historical value of Key West, and loved that the tours presented us with many ‘Photo Ops’, places to visit, and generally just showed us around the town! Thanks so much!!”

S.S., Bordentown, NJ:

“My mom and I enjoyed our trolley experience tremendously! It went off without a hitch! The guides were all very informative and really added to the sightseeing experience. We were able to see and do so much more because of the trolley. We were also pleased to see that you have wheelchair accessible options, as next time we will be traveling with a wheelchair user. We have already recommended you to several people. Old Town Trolley Tours really made our whole trip!”

D. L., Hollsopple, PA:

“Mark, our guide was excellent. He made the tour very enjoyable and was entertaining and informative.  We would highly recommend him!”

J. D., Erin, Ontario, Canada:

“We had two drivers – both were excellent: witty, knowledgeable, and polite.”

T. B., Braham, MN:

“Our driver, Keith, was so informative, love hearing about his story of life in Key West.”

D.C., Newport Beach, CA:

“A great way to see the city of Key West quickly, and learn about its history. TJ was funny and informative. Thanks!”

C.M. Upper Marlboro, MD:

“I had only 4 short hours in Key West and was directed to your trolley tour. What a great recommendation! What really made it special was the trolley conductors. One was so funny and personable that I just had to write and commend you for hiring such a great employee…that would be Louie! I had such a great time that I will be taking Old Town’s Washington DC trip next week. Thanks!”

M.H., Banning, CA:

“Wonderful tour!  Never would have seen so much of Key West or heard so much.  Hope to return.  Good value!”

M.M., Silver Springs, MD:

“A nice way to see the town when you can’t walk great distances.  Appreciate the fact that you can get on/off all day.”

L.J., Carmel, IN:

“This should be the first thing to do upon arrival to Key West !  Very informative, now I would know what to do and see.”

K.J., Pennsville, NJ:

“Very entertaining and informative!  Helped us learn our way around the island so we planned our trip to our liking. Well worth it!”

R.V., Buford, GA:

“My wife and I just wanted to write you about Vanessa of the Key West Trolley tour. We have taken a number of your tours in different cities and Vanessa is by far the best we ever had. Her historical knowledge combined with her humor and energy is outstanding, not to mention her outstanding driving ability on very narrow streets. Should you have an employee of the quarter award or such she definitely should receive it, in fact I’d be surprised if she didn’t receive it every quarter, she definitely deserves it. Vanessa, we are the couple from Atlanta, my wife had a cane and you told us your husband was from KSU. I am a history buff so send me your email addy and I’ll send you some links on what I find. Keep having fun!!!”

C. & G., Key West, FL:

“I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the trolley service for our ceremony November 1st. Our guests had a really great time on the Trolley, and it turned out to be one of those moments that people are still talking about. It was clean, in great condition, and a real spectacle in our video.

If ever you need a testimonial about your service. I hope that you will think of us. We would love to tell anyone about your trolley charter service and how much it added to the element of surprise for our guests. None of the passengers knew where exactly they were headed until they arrived at West Martello. Your driver handled everything with class, and we couldn’t be happier.”

E.B. – Raleigh, NC:

“Aaron is a wonderful local historian. The tour was one of the best values for my tourist dollar during my stay. Very entertaining!!!”

M.G., Jamison, PA:

“You have one of the Best websites we have encountered. It is easy to navigate and is not “clogged” with non-related information.”

“I am a Key West local and regularly ride the trolley with visiting guests. I recently had a tour with “Hank” and have to say he was the most entertaining and personable of all the guides I’ve heard.  He spoke clearly, answered questions politely, and was a good ad for your company; this guy is definitely a keeper. Thanks, Hank!”

There’s no better way to see all of Key West than with Old Town Trolley Tours.

The island of Key West is full of fun and exciting things to do and see. From the Southernmost Point to the quaint streets of Old Town, our tour takes you to all the major areas and attractions. See Key West’s first tourist attraction, the Key West Aquarium, which was also the world’s first open-air aquarium. Cross the street and you’ll find yourself back in the 1800s at the Key West Shipwreck Treasure Museum, learning about how Key West became one of the richest cities in the U.S. The Oldest House Museum is also nearby; it is one of the many beautifully restored homes that are open to the public in Key West.

Stop by the Ernest Hemingway House Museum where he is rumored to have written “A Farewell to Arms” — and don’t forget to look for the 6 or 7 toed cats! Marvel at the beautiful species of butterflies in the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, and wander next door to the Southernmost House Mansion and Museum, known for its 19th-century architecture and tropical gardens. Cool off with a drink at the famous Sloppy Joe’s Bar or Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville in the Old Town area. But don’t leave Key West until you’ve watched the sunset from Mallory Square, a truly memorable experience!

Duval Street Duval Street free

U.S. News Insider Tip: Fuel your day of sightseeing with strong, sweet espresso from Cuban Coffee Queen. There are multiple locations near or along Duval Street, including the original truck by the waterfront. If it's a hot day (which it always is), get an iced cafe con leche with coffee ice cubes. - Lyssa Goldberg

A visit to Key West isn't complete without taking a stroll down Duval Street. Lined with restaurants, bars, art galleries and souvenir shops, this popular thoroughfare stretches a little more than a mile and is near many of the city's most well-known attractions. Grab a slice of Key lime pie from Kermit's Key West Key Lime Shoppe a few blocks over, sign up for a ghost tour or catch some live music at the legendary Sloppy Joe's bar. Best of all, you can people-watch here free of charge.

Mallory Square Mallory Square free

U.S. News Insider Tip: A Mallory Square sunset is a must during your trip, but don't miss out on sunset views at dinner, too. Plan ahead and book a table at a waterfront restaurant like nearby Hot Tin Roof or Latitudes . These reservations can fill up months in advance. - Lyssa Goldberg

For a great view of the Key West sunset, head to Mallory Square at the northwest tip of the island. During the Sunset Celebration (a free, nightly arts festival that starts about two hours before sunset), this is one of the best spots on the island to catch the sun's last moments and revel in the end of the day. But because it's one of the best vantage points for watching a sunset, it's also extremely crowded, especially with cruise passengers when ships are in port.

One of the most popular things to do in Key West is to snap a photo with the colorful buoy marking the southernmost point of the United States. Sitting at the intersection of Whitehead and South streets, the striped buoy is just 90 miles north of Cuba. Next to it, you'll find a plaque dedicated to Cubans who have lost their lives trying to reach America, and a plaque detailing the history of the Black community on the Southernmost Point.

Literary icon and journalist Ernest Hemingway is one of Key West's best-known and well-loved "freshwater Conchs" (a resident who was not born on the island). His former home – which he lived in for less than 10 years, but owned until his death in 1961 – is located in Old Town and is now a U.S. National Historic Landmark. Literature buffs take note: Hemingway penned parts of some of his most famous works, including "A Farewell to Arms" and "For Whom the Bell Tolls," in this very residence. The grand house itself is interesting, as it was one of the first in Key West to have indoor plumbing and a pool. Inside, the rooms contain memorabilia about Hemingway's life and work.

Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park

For the cleanest beach and best waters in Key West, you should head for the westernmost point of the island to Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park. There, you can sunbathe, hike, bike, fish and get a dose of history all in one place. Recent visitors noted the clear waters, making it an ideal snorkeling spot, but travelers also warn that the sand is not soft and that beach shoes are needed to traverse the rocky terrain safely. While the beach might not be as powdery soft as some other Florida beaches , it does offer some great snorkeling opportunities, according to recent visitors. You can either bring your own or rent equipment on-site. Along with your water gear, pack some food and charcoal: This beach has plenty of barbecue grills.

If you get tired of hanging out beachside, stop by the historic fort located within the park. The fort was built in the mid-1800s and was used during the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. Daily guided tours are available at 11 a.m. or you can follow the self-guided tour.

Take a Key West boat tour Take a Key West boat tour

When you're not admiring the waters that surround Key West from the beach, enjoy them from the deck of a boat. Several companies offer sailing, snorkeling and kayaking tours, not to mention sunset cruises and fishing charters .  Danger Charters , Classic Harbor Line  and  Sebago Key West  all receive favorable reviews from recent travelers. There are also several tours designed exclusively for dolphin watching (the Florida Keys are home to bottlenose dolphins year-round, along with six other dolphin species that pass through the area) – Wild About Dolphins and Honest Eco  are among the most popular, according to recent travelers.

If you sign up for a  snorkeling tour , you'll likely sail to the Florida Keys Reef – the only living coral barrier reef in North America. Located approximately 6 miles off the coast of Key West, the reef has shallow waters ideal for beginners. Travelers can also sign up for kayaking tours and paddle through the uninhabited mangrove islands in the Key West National Wildlife Refuge.

Smathers Beach Smathers Beach free

Key West isn't known for its beaches. However, the largest and most bustling one on this island is Smathers Beach, which is particularly popular during spring break. Recent travelers say the beach is clean with calm waters, plenty of shade under the palms and amenities, including bathrooms, food trucks, and chair and umbrella rentals. Visitors also say the views are great and praise the beach's soft white sand. In recent months, several visitors noted an abundance of sargassum (smelly seaweed).

You'll find Smathers Beach on the southern shore of the island, stretching half a mile along the Atlantic Ocean and State Road A1A. It's close to the airport, which can be a pro if you enjoy watching the planes take off and land, or a con if you're not a fan of the noise.

Harry S. Truman Little White House Harry S. Truman Little White House

Originally built by the U.S. Navy in 1890, the Little White House served as naval command headquarters during the Spanish-American War, and also played roles in both World Wars and the Cold War. From 1946 through 1952, President Harry Truman used this house as his winter vacation home and because he spent 175 days of his presidency here, it became known as the Little White House. The name is fitting: Since Truman's days, many other presidents have also vacationed here, including Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Today, the Little White House has been restored and turned into a museum. Exhibits document Key West's role in naval conflicts, as well as the house's history – the Marshall Plan and Truman Doctrine were both discussed here.

Recent travelers highly recommend a visit to the Little White House, especially for self-identified history buffs. The guides and exhibits both earn high marks from reviewers. The only gripe among recent visitors concerned the admission cost, which some felt was too high for a one-hour experience.

Key West Lighthouse & Keeper's Quarters Museum Key West Lighthouse & Keeper's Quarters Museum

If you can fend off the claustrophobia and don't mind heights, the climb up the tiny and constricting 88 spiral steps to the top of the Key West Lighthouse is worth it for the views, say recent visitors. Once you're up there though, be patient: According to past travelers, the viewing balcony at the top is very narrow. After taking in the views, take a look around the keeper's quarters, which have been around since 1887. The cozy house is now a museum that surveys the history of lighthouses in the Keys, with photographs and various artifacts. The gift shop is also a great place to find regional art.

One ticket gets you access to both the lighthouse and the museum. Admission for adults costs $17; kids ages 7 to 18 get in for $9, while children younger than 7 can enter for free. Discounts are available when you purchase your tickets online. Visitors are divided on whether the admission price is worth the local history provided in the museum, but most agree that the panoramic views seen from the top of the lighthouse are unbeatable. The lighthouse and museum are open daily (except Christmas) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Situated across the street from the  Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum , you can easily visit both sites in one day. Reviewers say there is some street parking, but most recommend walking in from town.

Operating for more than 50 years, the Conch Tour Train is an ideal option for travelers interested in learning the history of Key West, but who don't have a lot of time to spend meandering through different attractions. This 75-minute narrated tour loops through Key West's famous Old Town, focusing on the city's rich history. The tour departs from Front Street and makes three stops along the way for visitors to grab refreshments and stretch their legs, and then wraps at Mallory Square . Passengers can also choose to hop off at a stop to visit nearby attractions and catch a later train.

Recent visitors praised the excellent tour guides, calling them knowledgeable and entertaining. They also said the train was a great way to see Old Town while giving your feet a break from walking. While some travelers thought the tickets were a bit overpriced, others appreciated the tour's convenient hop-on, hop-off structure.

Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory

If you love butterflies, this is the spot for you. The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory is filled with 50 to 60 species of colorful winged creatures that seemingly float through the air in an enclosed, glass-domed aviary. Plant enthusiasts will also find much they'll love here, as the butterflies share their home with a wide variety of plants, along with more than 20 species of birds including two famed flamingos.

Past visitors highly recommend a stop here, describing the conservatory as a serene place to get away from the crowds or impending rain. Those traveling with kids said the kaleidoscopic butterflies and birds were a hit with the younger crowd, and the outing proved educational, too, thanks to a short film on butterfly metamorphosis.

Audubon House & Tropical Gardens Audubon House & Tropical Gardens

Whether you're interested in colonial furniture, period architecture, tropical greenery or artist and naturalist John James Audubon, you'll find a host of curiosities at the Audubon House & Tropical Gardens. Located in Old Town a block away from Duval Street , the Audubon House & Tropical Gardens dates back to the 1840s. The house was built by Captain John Huling Geiger, but it's named after well-known ornithologist John James Audubon, who visited the Keys in 1832. Twenty-eight of his works can be found in the house. While you're here, take a look at the house's decor and then head outside to the lush and colorful garden, which includes orchids, bromeliads and other tropical plants. For some, the garden was their favorite part of the house, noting that the vibrantly colored flowers make for prime photography subjects. Other reviewers remarked on the careful restoration of the house and its period-specific antiques.

When you walk into the house, you'll be greeted by a staff member who will offer a brief introduction. Many visitors remark on how friendly and knowledgeable the docents are. From there, you can embark on your own self-guided tour. The Audubon House is open every day from 9:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Admission for adults costs $15; students (of any age) pay $10; tickets for kids ages 6 to 12 cost $5; children younger than 6 get in for free. You can purchase Audubon prints (and other souvenirs) in the on-site gift shop. For more information, visit the official website .

Key West Aquarium Key West Aquarium

The Key West Aquarium is proof that good things come in small packages. More small-scale than your typical aquarium, this indoor-outdoor attraction is a historic facility that first opened in 1935. Although it might be lacking in elaborate exhibits, this one-story aquarium still has a good range of creatures for the entire family to see. Take your kids to the touch pools to see if a sea cucumber is as slimy as it looks. The museum also hosts several tours and presentations throughout the day. If you're lucky, you may get to feed a gentle nurse shark if you attend the shark presentation.

The aquarium is home to several rescued sea turtles that are native to Florida waters.

Higgs Beach Higgs Beach free

Located on the south side of the island along the Atlantic Ocean, Clarence S. Higgs Memorial Beach Park encompasses 16.5 acres of oceanfront, two piers (one on each end), a Civil War-era fort and the site of what's believed to be the only known African refugee cemetery in the U.S. Beachgoers can enjoy a day of swimming, snorkeling, kayaking or paddle boarding in the ocean, plus land activities ranging from sunbathing to beach volleyball, tennis and pickleball.

Higgs Beach is known for its fine, white sand and shallow water, making it an ideal beach for families with small children. However, when you first enter the water, the sand can be rocky, recent travelers warn, so bring water shoes. You can avoid the rocks entirely by walking down the Reynolds Street Pier past the rocky shore to a ladder, where you can step down into the water. Beach chairs and umbrella rentals are available, or you can set up shop at one of several tiki huts, permanent wooden umbrellas, or picnic tables with barbecues. The park also offers visitors a bike path, a children's playground, a dog park, plus public restrooms and showers.

U.S. News Insider Tip: For more of the macabre, take an evening Ghosts & Gravestones tour to learn about the spooky tales of other Key West sites, where you'll meet the legendary (but haunted) Robert the Doll. – Lyssa Goldberg

Located in Old Town, the Key West Cemetery has been around since 1847 and is well worth at least a walk-through. The quirkiness of the city's residents extends even to the grave. Tombstones in this 19-acre cemetery don't bear the typical inscriptions. Instead, you'll find epitaphs that reflect the island's casual lifestyle. Some of the more well-known inscriptions include "I told you I was sick" and "I'm just resting my eyes." One tombstone for a captain is actually topped with a ship's mast. Notable Conchs buried here include Ellen Mallory, whose name you'll recognize from Mallory Square ; William Curry, Florida's first millionaire; and "Sloppy" Joe Russell, who was Ernest Hemingway's fishing guide and a bartender at the famed Sloppy Joe's bar on Duval Street .

The distillery also sells flasks, shot glasses and rum cake.

Past visitors praised the distillery's delicious drinks and informative staff members, but noted that the tour was limited to one room. Even so, many recommended visiting for the wide selection of rums and rum drinks alone (including piña coladas).

Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center free

With more than 6,000 square feet of interactive exhibits, the Florida Keys Eco-Discovery center seeks to inspire visitors to preserve the marine ecosystems of the Florida Keys and enjoy this natural resource responsibly. Here, guests can learn about the native plants and animals of the Florida Keys through exhibits highlighting the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, four national wildlife refuges and three national parks, including Dry Tortugas, which is on an island about 70 miles from Key West.

Visitors can watch a 20-minute movie about the Keys' fragile ecosystems and then explore the center on a self-paced tour. Staff and volunteers are also on-site to answer questions. Notable exhibits include a replica of NOAA's Aquarius, the only underwater ocean laboratory in the world, and a spotlight on the long maritime history of shipwrecks inside the sanctuary's waters. After completing renovations in late 2022, there are even more hands-on activities, such as a mangrove exhibit where guests can play animal noises and guess which animal made the sound, an area with microscopes so you can watch coral close-up, and a paddleboard photo-op that looks like you’re paddling through the mangroves. The center has been certified by KultureCity as a sensory inclusive facility for people with sensory sensitivities; it offers a separate room where people can take a break from the exhibits. Sensory kits are also available.

Next up en route from Key Largo to Key West is the fisherman's paradise known as Islamorada. Considered the Sport Fishing Capital of the World, it's where backcountry sport fishing and saltwater fly-fishing got their start. Countless seasoned boat captains are ready for hire to take you out to catch the wahoo, marlin, mahi-mahi and tuna that swim in these waters.

There's an even quirkier way to interact with fish here: hand-feeding the tarpon off the docks of Robbie's Marina (MM 77.5). Since 1976, countless Keys visitors have stopped to feed them, and more than 100 kinds of fish gather at the docks for their daily snacks. Feeding the fishies there is so popular, it's been named the No. 1 activity in all the Florida Keys.

Islamorada is also a terrific spot to kitesurf, stand-up paddleboard, go for a hike or take a bicycle ride. Stop by the Laura Quinn Wild Bird Sanctuary, where injured or displaced birdies now make their homes. Or visit the History of Diving Museum, which boasts one of the world's largest collections of diving helmets.

Best beach: Anne's Beach is popular with families (and dogs) because of its shallow waters and lack of waves. Take a walk along the boardwalk or enjoy a picnic at one of the covered tables.

Where to eat: For a quintessential casual Florida Keys meal, go to the Hungry Tarpon. If you want more elegant fare, make reservations at Chef Michael's for creatively inspired local dishes.

Where to stay: When it's time to lay your head for the night, check in to one of the new oceanfront suites at Cheeca Lodge & Spa , or your own cottage at The Moorings Village & Spa .
