Places to Visit in Kottayam

Kottayam is a city in the southern area of Kerala. Because of its location in the Meenachil River valley, the city of Kottayam is elevated to an average height of 3 metres above sea level and enjoys a temperate climate throughout the entire year. To the west are the rice paddies of Kuttanad and Vembanad Lake, while to the east are the beautiful Western Ghats. Kottayam translates as"inside of the fort" from the Malayalam terms "kotta" and "akam," respectively. Kottayam takes pride in its beauty, which is characterised by the backwaters, beautiful paddy fields, hillocks, hills, highlands, and large rubber plantations for which Kerala is famous. Kottayam is known as "The City of Letters" because of the large number of Malayalam newspapers, such as Deepika, and Malayala Manorama as well as the number of publishing enterprises that are headquartered there.

CPM has a 'Sandesham' for comrades: You can be a communist and a believer the same time

 alt=

If the timeless political satire 'Sandesham' was written today, party ideologue comrade Kumara Pillai might not have felt the need to cover his head to visit a temple. He has CPM state secretary M V Govindan's approval to endorse his religious beliefs proudly. Govindan made it clear while addressing the media at the AKG Centre in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday that a communist need not be an atheist as popular culture would have you believe.

"A communist is free to choose what he wants to be. There are many believers within our party," Govindan said. "The party doesn't believe a member should be banned from having religious beliefs," the communist leader declared. There is a caveat though: Not every member of the communist party is a Marxist. "We cannot say one must be a Marxist just because he has party membership. Being a Marxist is a process," Govindan said.

To attest his argument, Govindan drew reference to a recent incident in Pathanamthitta. "A few people joined the party from BJP. They cannot say we have become a communist from day one, it will take a few years, just like one doesn't get the party membership right away," said Govindan.

The demonstration was based on the claim that the RSS (Hindu right-wing organisation) had taken control over temples in Kerala and that it was about time the believers (including comrades with faith) acted. "The RSS is trying to take over temples, even those managed by the Devaswom. There are clear instructions against organising shakhas and other activities at temples, but the RSS do the same inside temple compounds. We keep saying that must change. Temples must be handed over to the believers, now communal forces are using the places of worship for their purposes," Govindan said, urging the Devaswom 'to intervene'. CPM leader V N Vasavan is the Minister for Devaswoms.

Govindan went a step further by accusing the RSS 'shakhas' of promoting violence. The RSS defines its 'shakhas' as "the most effective and time-tested instrument for the moulding of men on patriotic lines - outreaching by far its physical dimension". But Govindan claims "Shakha activities are nothing but goonda activities". "They teach where to stab to kill a person faster," Govindan said.

The CPM leader also said his party has never been opposed to the SNDP (Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam), the social organisation representing the Ezhava community. Govindan argued that the CPM was only opposed to "attempts from within the SNDP, made by BDJS and RSS, to saffronise the vision of Sree Narayana Guru".

From Buoyant to Frail: Two Days in Las Vegas as Biden Tests Positive

The president’s appearance, and his campaign’s momentum, changed dramatically during a two-day swing in Nevada that was cut short when he tested positive for Covid.

  • Share full article

President Biden is ushered into the presidential limousine by surrounding security agents.

By Zolan Kanno-Youngs

Zolan Kanno-Youngs traveled on Air Force One with President Biden during his trip to Nevada and was in the motorcade when the president received positive results from a Covid test.

  • July 18, 2024

President Biden emerged from Air Force One at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Wednesday wearing a cap and a bomber jacket, but no mask, steadying himself with his right hand. He walked two steps down the stairway before pausing, then pointed and waved straight ahead, his mouth agape.

He took two more steps and stopped again. He turned to the left and raised his hands when he saw reporters gathered near the plane’s engine.

Ten more steps and Mr. Biden made it to the ground. Reporters shouted questions, asking for a response to Democrats who had called for him to drop out of the presidential race.

“I am doing well,” Mr. Biden said, giving a thumbs up.

But video captured by ABC News showed Mr. Biden struggling to get in his seat in the presidential limousine, known as the Beast. It took about 23 seconds before he was settled, according to the footage.

The president’s appearance — and his campaign’s momentum — had changed drastically in two days.

When he began his campaign events this week, Mr. Biden and his senior staff members had remained defiant, confidently brushing off concerns from within their party about Mr. Biden’s condition.

Bidding to energize crucial Black and Latino voters, Mr. Biden stepped off Air Force One in Nevada on Monday flanked by Representative James Clyburn of South Carolina, the influential Democrat who helped revive his 2020 campaign. The president immediately was surrounded by more than a dozen Democrats and local officials in a show of support.

The next day, he showed a flash of energy during a speech to the N.A.A.C.P. National Convention, going on the offensive against Mr. Trump’s comment about “Black jobs” during the presidential debate.

“It says a lot about the man and about his character,” Mr. Biden said as attendees shouted in support. “I know what a Black job is. It’s the vice president of the United States!”

Just over an hour later on Tuesday afternoon, in a much smaller venue, Mr. Biden appeared to tire as he spoke at an economic forum hosted by Representative Steven Horsford of Nevada. He also appeared to have a cough.

The next day, Mr. Biden seemed much more frail as he stepped into a dining room at a Mexican restaurant, the Original Lindo Michoacán Desert Inn. Walking more slowly and looking pale, Mr. Biden took group selfies and squeezed next to patrons in a booth as an upbeat Latin song playing over the restaurant speakers.

As he greeted patrons, reporters shouted questions about Democrats calling for him to leave the race.

Mr. Biden also sat for an interview with Univision. Fighting through a cough, he articulated the concerns of those who have urged him to drop out.

“He’s 81 years old. What happens when he’s 84 years old? What happens when he’s 85 years old?” Mr. Biden said before coughing.

He then disappeared from public view for nearly two hours while reporters waited outside the restaurant in extreme heat, pacing along the president’s motorcade and knocking on the car windows to ask staff members for an update.

Then reporters began to get alerts and text messages from people at the UnidosUS conference, where Mr. Biden had been scheduled to speak in the afternoon.

Janet Murguía, the chief executive of UnidosUS, had just given the gathering some news.

“The president has been at many events, as we all know, and he just tested positive for Covid,” she said.

Ms. Murguía’s announcement surprised even some of the White House staff members in Mr. Biden’s motorcade, who quickly rushed into their vehicles. The motorcade pulled away from the restaurant, and the White House confirmed the diagnosis, saying Mr. Biden would return to Delaware and isolate.

A short time later, on the airport tarmac at 3:20 p.m. in Las Vegas, Mr. Biden leaned out of the Beast and gave a thumbs-up to reporters gathered there. “I feel good,” said Mr. Biden, wearing aviators but no mask.

The staff of Air Force One had positioned a much shorter staircase than the 18-foot stairs usually used to reach the plane’s upper door. Mr. Biden had used the stairs periodically over the past year. Still, he appeared more cautious than usual as he made his way up, placing his right hand on a railing for balance.
