Pharmacist Report Logo

Pharmacist VERSUS Pharmacologist (Which Is Better And What Are The Differences?)

Details And Examples From Actual Pharmacist & Pharmacologist

Do Cruise Ships Have Pharmacists?

A pharmacist is a medical professional who is qualified to prepare and dispense medicinal drugs. People often think that the duties and responsibilities of pharmacists are just to count pills. But, this is not true. The job of a pharmacist is not limited to that. As a pharmacist, you will be responsible for various tasks like dispensing medication, guiding customers regarding medication usage, checking on stock, etc.

When it comes to pharmacy, there are various career fields. Based on your interest and skill set, you can work in a community pharmacy , clinical pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, compounding pharmacy, industrial pharmacy, consulting pharmacy, ambulatory care pharmacy, regulatory pharmacy, home care pharmacy, etc.

If you are interested in a cruise ship career, you may wonder whether cruise ships have pharmacists? Is it possible to become a cruise pharmacist ?

So is there a Pharmacist working on all those cruise ships out there?

Most all Cruise ships do not have pharmacists. Instead of a pharmacy, they have on the counter medication stocked. These on the counter medications include few medications like cough medicine and Tylenol. For the expensive live on cruise ships for the wealthy yes they do usually have a Pharmacist or more on board.

Instead of pharmacists, a cruise ship usually has a doctor and a hospital. All lifesaving medicines are onboard to ensure the safety of passengers. On cruise ships, you will find treatments for common problems like colds, headaches, etc. If any cruise passenger has a severe health problem, there is an onboard medical center, which has a wide variety of medicines available.

The cruise ship may have a wide variety of medicines available onboard, but it is not possible to get a prescription when you forget to bring yours. In short, if any person wants to get a medical prescription from the medical center at the cruise ship, it is usually not possible.

Cruise Ship Pharmacist Do They Exist?

So we didn’t want you to just take our word for it on this matter. We don’t see much information out there besides one youtube video and some comments. So we went to Pharmacist and Doctor forums to gather information from others who are searching for this information. There are some Current and Past Pharmacists that give their take as well.

We curated this information from multiple sites including forums the only thing we changed was any spelling or grammar where needed.

Here is the video most people have seen and questioned:

Real Opinions: Cruise Ship Pharmacist

1. CleverLikeMe “Apparently they do exist” – Youtube video out there states there are and apparently there is one, she’s blonde, and she likes to ride bikes and laugh at fun things with her friends. Serious comment – I imagine the pharmacy part of the job would be about the same as retail pharmacy anywhere. For the other aspects, there was a great thread somewhere on reddit a few months back that talked about people with jobs (in general) on cruise ships. Bad hours, lots and lots of drama, lots of drinking.

2. MicroLovesMacro “Used to exist” –

Awesome video. When I used Google, I just got loads of job sites for low level cruise staff and a few for doctors and nurses.

Sadly, someone else mentioned the pharmacy job was removed and replaced with other medical personnel. Now I’ll never be able to live the cruise ship pharmacist life.

That video was my only glimpse of my ideal fantasy. Sigh. I guess I just quit now. There’s nothing left for me out there!

3. PharmJize “Not sure on video having any truth” – I’ve watched that video before because I, myself, looked into a cruise ship pharmacist role. The maker of the video is some weird Australian pharmacy school? Heres their website: http://www.monash.edu/pharm I literally couldn’t find any information at all about the profession except for that video. There wasn’t even anything on their website about it. So I sent that youtube account a message asking for more information, that was over a year ago…

4. Traveler “Pharmacist really not needed on cruise ship” – I’d imagine laws are different or non-existent in international waters, and you can probably just have the doc/NP/tech dispense everything including controls. They don’t even use pharmacists on US navy ships except for the 2 hospital ships, techs there do everything.

5. PharmMan “Just doesn’t make sense” –

Heres the honost truth:

It def would NOT suck. This would be the greatest experience ever, like HELLO?!?!? Everyone here is just jelly beans of cruise ship ppl.

I have to doubt the validity of that student. Sounds like the information could have gotten scrambled by the time it got back to you. We are all familiar with the telephone game, correct? 2a) I only doubt the validity because I have spent so much time searching for such a position and it simply does not exist. u/cleverlikeme posted a link of an Australian pharmacy schools advertisement for becoming a cruise pharmacist. In short, I even tried to contact that school and never heard anything back.

Think about this logically guys; you really don’t need a pharmacist on a cruise ship…I love our profession and stuff, but its just really not that important.

Now if you want to know all about exotic pharmacy jobs, I’m the man to talk to! Best one I’ve seen so far is in Antarctica, and yours truly is going to apply next year! (I’m actually probably not going to get it though)…

Other cool exotics are Zoo pharmacists and actually NASA has one pharmacist (she doesn’t actually leave earth). Haven’t really seen anything very exciting besides those 3.

Do cruises have doctors onboard?

The answer is Yes. Almost all cruise ships have at least one doctor and two nurses on board. The number of doctors and nurses on the cruise ship is usually based on its size. For example, many larger cruise ships sail have two doctors and three or four nurses onboard.

Having enough medical staff inside the cruise ship is very important as it ensures passengers’ safety and security. According to the American College of Emergency Physician guidelines, ships must have medical staff on call 24 hours.

If we talk about Royal Caribbean International, they have a minimum of one fully licensed doctor and a minimum of two licensed nurses onboard every ship. This number may differ depending on the ship’s size, the number of passengers, and a number of crew members. Depending on that, each ship may have one to three licensed doctors and three to five nurses.

Do cruise ships have a jail?

The answer is Yes. Most cruise ships have a jail. The jail cell in the ship is hidden away at the bottom of the vessel. Cruise ships’ jail on a vessel is known as a brig. A brig consists of a small room and a toilet. Locking inside the brig would help any person inside the cruise ship seem intoxicated or dangerous outside.

Where can you buy medicine on a cruise?

To buy medicine on a cruise ship, just head on the onboard shop. In the shop, they have all the medication for all types of common medical problems. In the onboard shop, you will not be able to buy strong medicines. They just have medicines for common health problems.

The paramedic is also part of the medical staff on the cruise ship. They work alongside experienced nurses and doctors. The paramedic works during various emergencies and works as the cruise ship’s medical team.

Final Thoughts

Cruise ships carry essential medications onboard, but most all do not have pharmacists. The medicine is available for problems like cough, headaches, etc. To ensure passengers and crew members’ medical safety and crew members traveling inside the cruise ships they have licensed doctors and nurses.

The number of doctors and nurses inside the cruise is mainly based on the cruise ship’s size, the number of passengers, crew members, etc.

This isn’t to say you can’t find a job as Pharmacist Cruise ship out there somewhere in the world. The problem when you do is that roll will likely be taken and that person will most likely be there for awhile. So it may be best to search out other rolls that will keep you interested as much as this in the Pharmacy industry. There are many other specialized jobs that include Nuclear Pharmacist and Ambulatory just do your research.

Below, we delve into the different types of cruise ship jobs and the hierarchy onboard to give you a comprehensive view.

Different Types of Cruise Ship Jobs

On a cruise ship, various roles cater to the diverse needs of passengers. Whether you’re interested in guest services, entertainment, hospitality, or navigation, there’s a job for almost every skill set. Here are some common positions you might find:

  • Guest Services: This department handles passenger inquiries, onboard activities, and overall guest satisfaction.
  • Entertainment: From performers to technicians, the entertainment team ensures passengers have a memorable experience through shows and activities.

  • Navigation: Crew members responsible for piloting the ship, maintaining safety protocols, and overseeing operations belong to this critical department.

Understanding the various roles available will help you identify where your skills and interests align best.

The Hierarchy Onboard a Cruise Ship

Like any large operation, a cruise ship has a structured hierarchy to ensure smooth functioning and delivery of top-notch service. Here’s a typical hierarchy you might encounter:

  • Captain: The highest-ranking officer responsible for overall operations and safety.
  • Department Heads: In charge of specific areas like guest services, entertainment, and hospitality.
  • Supervisors: Oversee teams within their respective departments to maintain standards and efficiency.
  • Crew Members: Frontline staff responsible for day-to-day tasks to meet passenger needs and ensure a pleasant experience.

Understanding this hierarchy can give you a clear picture of where each role fits in the larger cruise ship environment, helping you identify potential career paths based on your aspirations and skills.

Required Qualifications for Cruise Ship Jobs

Education and certification.

Cruise ship jobs may have varying educational requirements based on the role you’re applying for. While some positions may only need a high school diploma or equivalent, others, especially those in specialized areas like medical services or engineering, might require specific degrees or certifications. Check the job description carefully to see the educational qualifications needed for the position you’re interested in. For example, roles in guest services or retail may focus more on customer service experience rather than formal education.

Necessary Skills and Experience

When applying for a cruise ship job, having the right skills and experience can set you apart from other candidates. Strong communication skills are essential in most roles onboard, as you’ll be interacting with passengers, colleagues, and possibly people from different cultures. Adaptability and a customer-focused mindset are highly valued, as the cruise industry thrives on providing exceptional guest experiences. Previous experience in hospitality, tourism, or related fields can be advantageous, but some positions offer training for suitable candidates without direct experience. Highlight any relevant skills such as language proficiency, technical expertise, or leadership abilities in your application to showcase your suitability for the role.

Preparing Your Application

Crafting a stand-out resume.

When applying for a position on a cruise ship, your resume plays a vital role in showcasing your skills and experience to potential employers. To craft a stand-out resume, focus on highlighting relevant information that aligns with the job requirements. Start by including a clear and concise summary at the beginning of your resume. This summary should briefly outline your professional background and key qualifications for the specific role you are applying to on the cruise ship.

Next, detail your work experience, emphasizing any previous roles in hospitality, customer service, or related fields. Highlight achievements and responsibilities that demonstrate your ability to thrive in a dynamic and guest-focused environment. Quantify your accomplishments where possible to provide concrete examples of your capabilities. For instance, instead of saying you have “strong communication skills,” showcase your effectiveness by mentioning how you improved guest satisfaction scores by 20% through excellent communication.

Don’t forget to list relevant certifications, such as First Aid or STCW (Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers), if you possess them. These certifications can give you a competitive edge and show that you are prepared for the unique challenges of working on a cruise ship.

In addition to your work experience, include a section on your education and training. Mention any degrees or coursework that are pertinent to the job you are applying for. If you have completed any specialized training programs related to the cruise industry, be sure to highlight these as well.

Lastly, proofread your resume carefully to ensure there are no typos or grammar errors. A well-organized and error-free resume reflects your attention to detail and professionalism, increasing your chances of standing out to recruiters.

Writing an Effective Cover Letter

Alongside your resume, a well-crafted cover letter can make a significant impact on your cruise ship job application. Use the cover letter as an opportunity to introduce yourself personally and express your enthusiasm for the position.

Start your cover letter by addressing it to the hiring manager or recruiter by name, if possible. This shows that you have taken the time to research the company and are genuinely interested in the opportunity. In the opening paragraph, state the position you are applying for and mention how you learned about the job opening.

In the body of the cover letter, highlight specific experiences or skills that make you a strong candidate for the role. Share anecdotes or achievements that illustrate your ability to excel in a maritime setting. For example, if you have previous experience working in a fast-paced environment, relate this to the cruise ship industry’s demands for teamwork and efficiency.

Avoid simply restating the information on your resume in your cover letter. Instead, use the cover letter to provide context for your skills and experiences and explain why you are passionate about working on a cruise ship.

Navigating the Application Process

Where to find cruise ship job listings.

When looking for cruise ship job opportunities, start by checking reputable online job boards specializing in maritime or hospitality careers. Websites like CruiseJobFinder and All Cruise Jobs regularly post vacancies from various cruise lines. Additionally, cruise line websites often have dedicated career sections listing available positions.

Navigating the Online Application Platforms

Typically, you’ll need to create an account on the cruise line’s recruitment portal, fill out personal details, upload your resume, and complete any assessments or questionnaires.

Agency vs. Direct Applications: Pros and Cons

When applying for cruise ship jobs, you have the option to apply directly to the cruise lines or through recruitment agencies specializing in maritime staffing. Direct applications allow for direct communication with the hiring company but may require more effort in finding vacancies. On the other hand, agencies can streamline the application process, offering guidance and matching you with suitable positions, albeit sometimes at the cost of a commission fee.

Native villages near the site of the future Khabarovsk according to an English map of 1773. The village closest to today's Khabarovsk is labeled "Hitcha". Maack's "Cape Kyrma" site (thought by B.P. Polyakov to be the site of Stepanov's Kosogorsky Ostrog) is "Heremo" Kitchen-21-Russia-mid-Amur-2830.jpg

Historical records indicate that a city was founded on the site in the eighth century. The Tungusic peoples are indigenous to the city's vicinity. The city was named Boli ( 伯力 ; Bólì ) in Chinese when it was part of the Chinese empire. During the Tang dynasty, Boli was the capital of Heishui Protectorate, called Heishui Duhufu. [18] In AD 722, Emperor Xuanzong of Tang (唐玄宗) established Heishui Protectorate and gave self-rule to Heishui Mohe tribes. The seat of this administrative region was then established near today's Khabarovsk. [19] [20]

In the mid-17th century, the Amur Valley became the scene of hostilities between the Russian Cossacks , who tried to expand into the region and collect tribute from the natives, and the rising Manchu Qing dynasty , who were intent on securing the region for themselves. [ citation needed ] The coastal areas had historically been the native home of the Manchu people.

Khabarov's Achansk

The Russian explorers and raiders of the 1650s set up a number of more or less fortified camps ( ostrogs ) on the Amur. Most of them were in use for only a few months and later destroyed. It is usually thought that the first such camp in the general area of today's Khabarovsk was the fortified winter camp named Achansk ( Ачанск ) or Achansky gorodok ( Ачанский городок ), built by the Cossacks of Yerofey Khabarov in September 1651 after they had sailed to the area from the upper Amur. The fort was named after the local tribe whom Khabarov's people called "Achans". [21] [22] On October 8 the fort was unsuccessfully attacked by joint forces of Achans and Duchers (who had good reasons to hate the Cossacks, due to their rather heavy-handed tribute -extraction tactics [23] ), while many Russians were away fishing. [22] In late November, Khabarov's people undertook a three-day campaign against the local chief Zhakshur (Жакшур) (whose name is also known in a more Russian version, Zaksor (Заксор)), collecting a large amount of tribute and announcing that the locals were now subjects of the Russian Czar. A similar campaign was waged later in winter against the Ducher chief Nechiga (Нечига), farther away from Achansk. [22]

On 24 or   26 March 1652, Fort Achansk was attacked by Manchu cavalry, led by Ninguta 's commander Haise, reinforced by Ducher auxiliaries, but the Cossacks stood their ground in a day-long battle and even managed to seize the attackers' supply train . [22] Once the ice on the Amur broke in the spring of 1652, Khabarov's people destroyed their fort and sailed away. [22]

The exact location of Khabarov's Achansk has long been a subject for debate among Russian historians and geographers. [23] [24] A number of locations, both upstream and downstream of today's Khabarovsk, have been proposed since Richard Maack , one of the first Russian scholars to visit the region, identified Achansk in 1859 with the ruins on Cape Kyrma, which is located on the southern (Chinese) shore of the Amur, upstream of Khabarovsk. [23] The most widely accepted point of view is probably that of Boris Polevoy , who believed that Khabarov's Achansk was located in the Nanai village later known as Odzhal- Bolon ( Russian : Оджал-Болонь ), located on the left bank of the Amur, closer to Amursk than to Khabarovsk. One of his arguments was that both Khabarov's Achan (sometimes also spelt by the explorer as Otshchan, Отщан), and Wuzhala (乌扎拉) of the Chinese records of the 1652 engagement are based on the name of the Nanai clan "Odzhal" (Оджал), corresponding to the 20th-century name of the village as well. (The name of the clan was also written as "Uzala", as in the name of its best-known member, Dersu Uzala ). [23]

Polevoy's view appeared to gain wide support among the Russian geographer community; petitioned by the Amur Branch of the Russian Geographical Society , the Russian Government renamed the village of Odzhal to Achan in 1977, to celebrate its connection with Khabarov's raid. [23]

As to the Cape Kyrma ruins, thought by Maack to be the remains of Achansk, B.P. Polevoy identified them as the remains of another ostrog – namely, Kosogorsky Ostrog, where Onufriy Stepanov stayed a few years later. [24]

After the Treaty of Nerchinsk (1689) between the Tsardom of Russia and the Qing Empire , the area became an uncontested part of China for the next century and a half. Modern historical maps of the Qing period published in China mark the site of future Khabarovsk as Bólì ( Chinese : 伯力 ). All of the middle and lower Amur region was nominally part of the Jilin Province, run first out of Ninguta and later out of Jilin City . [25]

French Jesuits who sailed along the Ussuri and the Amur Rivers in 1709 prepared the first more or less precise map of the region. According to them, the indigenous Nanai people were living on the Ussuri and on the Amur down to the mouth of the Dondon River (i.e., in the region including the site of the future Khabarovsk). These people were known to the Chinese as Yupi Dazi ("Fish skin Tartars"). [26]

In 1858, the area was ceded to Russia under the Treaty of Aigun . The Russians founded the military outpost of Khabarovka ( Хаба́ровка ), [27] named after Yerofey Khabarov . The post later became an important industrial center for the region. Town status was granted in 1880. In 1893, it was given its present name: Khabarovsk . [5]

In 1894, a department of the Russian Geographical Society was formed in Khabarovsk and to found libraries, theatres and museums in the city. Since then, Khabarovsk's cultural life has flourished. Much of the local indigenous history has been well preserved in the Regional Lore Museum and Natural History Museum and in places like near the Nanai settlement of Sikachi-Alyan , where cliff drawings from more than 13,000 years ago can be found. The Khabarovsk Art Museum exhibits a rare collection of old Russian icons. [25]

In 1916, the Khabarovsk Bridge across the Amur was completed, allowing Trans-Siberian trains to cross the river without using ferries (or temporary rail tracks over the frozen river in winter). During the Russian Civil War , Khabarovsk was occupied by Japan in September 1918. [28]

Chinese Emperor Puyi , captured by Soviet troops in Manchuria , was relocated to Khabarovsk and lived there from 1945 up to 1950, when he was returned to China. [29]

When Japan fell in September 1945 the United States reached an agreement with Stalin to build two U.S. Naval Advance Bases (Fleet Weather Centrals) in the USSR. [30] The U.S. built one 10 miles (16   km) outside Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on the Kamchatka Peninsula with the code name TAMA. [31] The other was 20 miles (32   km) outside Khabarovsk in buildings provided by the Soviets, code-named MOKO. [31] For mail Khabarovsk was assigned U.S.Navy number 1168, FPO San Francisco. [32] The American use of these two bases was short-lived. [ citation needed ]
