The London temperature in September is still warm following summer, especially early in the month. It can get colder towards the end, but should remain mild throughout. Around eight days of rain is average, during the first month of autumn.

As autumn begins on 1st September, according to the meteorological calendar, you might expect the temperature to drop. However, September is the fourth-warmest month of the year in London. So the weather is very similar to what you can expect in June, the first summer month. 

Mild weather

The UK has a mild climate, without any extremes as such. There are occasional storms and flash floods, but major weather events are very uncommon in the capital. 

Changeable weather

London, like the rest of the UK, has a maritime climate. The fact that the country is an island means that the weather can change very quickly. So be prepared for rain at any time, even if the skies are clear and cloudless in the morning!

Wet weather 

The UK is famous for its wet weather. In reality, you could visit during September and experience no rain at all – or there might be heavy showers every day. Often, there will be dry or wet spells lasting for several days at a time. It’s simply a matter of luck.

In September, the sun rises between 6.15 and 7 am and sets between 7.45 and 6.40 pm. This gives you around 12 hours or more of daylight during most days of September.

In September, you get plenty of daylight for exploring the city before darker skies set in towards the end of the year. 

At the start of September, the sun doesn’t set until around 7.45 pm. By the end of the month, sunset is at about 6.40 pm.

What to take to London in September includes a wind and waterproof jacket, a travel umbrella, and a strong pair of comfortable walking shoes or boots. You’ll also need extra layers for evenings and colder days. 

While the September weather in London is usually mild, it gets colder during the evenings and overnight. Towards the end of the month, temperatures will also start to drop. Here’s what to wear in London in September.

You’ll do a lot of walking, so make sure you take comfortable shoes you can spend all day in. A change of footwear for the evenings is also a good idea. In September, you could need anything from sandals to boots, so something in-between like trainers or sneakers is ideal if you don’t want to pack too many pairs. 

A waterproof jacket is a necessity during any season in London. Due to the unpredictability of the weather, and cooler evenings, layers can also be key. Garments such as a waterproof jacket with a removable fleece are perfect. A daypack with sufficient space is necessary to carry clothing you might shed as it gets warmer. 

Active trousers with or without zip-off legs are ideal for September when it can be surprisingly hot on some days. On the top, wear a T-shirt when it’s warm enough, adding a sweater on top when required. Jeans are a good choice for evenings when it’s a little cooler. 

A packable waterproof jacket, a comfortable daypack and a travel umbrella are ideal accessories for a September trip to London.

One of the biggest annual events in September in London is the capital’s festival dedicated to design – and this year, London Design Festival is celebrating 21 years since its inception.

An abundance of special events, exhibitions, and open houses will take place across the entirety of the capital, spanning innovative creations to classic architecture. There will also be plenty of workshops taking place by the likes of OKA and the Global Design Forum.

If you hadn’t already heard, Noma is coming to London for one day and one day only . Well, actually it’s Noma Projects, the creative wing of the world’s best restaurant but who’s splitting hairs on that?

There’s a very high chance that by the time you’re reading this all the spots will have sold out, but just in case there are any dedicated foodies among you (we know there are) you better get scouring the internet for some second-hand tickets.

We’ve written about Taste Film’s stuff in our guides before. We absolutely love them. They get together every few months or so to screen some much-loved movies with a twist. This screening is also a dinner, and you’ll be eating along with the characters on screen. 

This time around they’re showing The Devil Wears Prada and serving up five drinks and dishes at various points throughout the movie. As usual you’ll be eating the same thing as the characters on screen do – nice then we don’t remember anyone in that film having anything other than a splendid figure.

London has gained a new escape room. Escape the Power Cut takes you behind the scenes of Control Room B for an electrifying (hehe) escape experience. What’s cool about this is that the dials and such you’ll be working around are really the instruments that ran the place back when it was used to generate power and not as a swanky shopping mall. 

Your job will be to restore power during an outage. To do this, you’ll need to solve a series of puzzles and (because all good control room engineers do this) drink a couple of cocktails.

Catch a Marina Abramović Exhibition at Royal Academy of Arts

The great Marina Abramović is getting an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts starting this month and running all the way through to January. 

The retrospective will examine the work of the legendary performance artist through images and video. What’s more, the exhibition will change over time so you can go back for seconds and have a completely new experience. 

Abramovic has been hailed as one of the most important conceptual artists of the past half-century. Her works are often provocative performance pieces that push the boundaries of the form, even putting the artist’s life at risk. It’s quite something to behold.

September marks the return of The Smalls Film Festival, London’s annual weekend of short film screenings. The festival is a run through some of the best of the short film world and has been running now for over a decade and a half.

It’s always a good laugh and a brilliant way to experience some of the lesser-known creative cinema being made in London, and around the world.

Candlelight has a rep for putting on some pretty special performances. This month they’re taking their signature candlelit stage and using it as a platform to play the songs from the legendary Zelda games.

Returning for another year, this festival celebrates all that the River Thames has to offer.

River cruises, walking tours, art exhibitions, and performances take place all along the 42-mile stretch of the Thames in London.

The events are geared toward families during the day, so take the little ones down to the water for face painting, snacks, regattas, and races!

September means the second Fashion Week celebration of the year. People will be traveling from all over the world to be dazzled at one of the many couture catwalk shows.

London Open House is one of the biggest events in London’s social calendar.

Dozens of city landmarks open their doors to the public for one weekend only.

Get behind the scenes in government buildings, take lifts to the top of the city’s most iconic skyscrapers, and delve underground to see the historic remains of London’s past.

Events take place September 6th-17th. Best of all - this event is entirely FREE. 

Watch a Parliament Debate

The Houses of Parliament return from their summer recess during the first week of September which means the public galleries in the Palace of Westminster will be opening their doors to visitors once again.

Take in a debate in the iconic House of Commons, or surround yourself in opulence in the historic House of Lords.

September is a confusing month for London.

The days are getting shorter, but the weather usually still allows for comfortable outdoor activities (either that or we just don’t want to give up on the summer yet so we suck it up).

However, finding things to do in London in September 2023 is as easy as ever.

It’s not a jam-packed month like London in August or December, but September has its place for a city-in-transition, and there’s plenty going on in the capital to still make the most of it.

Best Things to Do in London in September for Couples

1. science museum lates.

I just love a good visit to the Science Museum in London’s Kensington neighborhood (closest tube station: South Kensington).

It’s one of the best things to do in London at night and I could go again and again. 

When I used to live in the area, I would spend hours here roaming the galleries and immersing myself in the interactive technology.

The summer is a great month to catch one of the Science Museum’s late-night events, and the event happens on the last Wednesday of each month.

From talks on chocolate to alien lifeforms to genetics, there’s sure to be something that you’re interested in depending on the topic that month.

If you can’t catch one of the events, still go and visit during the day.

There’s something about the lighting in September that just makes the Science Museum such a nice place to be.

2. Matilda the Musical

While the more recent film version of the musical has swept the globe, that movie was an adaptation of the real musical, playing on the West End, featuring Matilda, Miss Honey, Trunchbull and all of your Matilda favorites.

This is a fun, heart-warming, family-friendly thing to do in London in September, and what better way to tie in the back to school season than joining the cast of this incredible musical as they navigate the sometimes treacherous waters of school while singing and dancing their way to freedom from the Trunchbull.

IMPORTANT: are you coming to the UK from abroad?

In case you’re reading this from outside the UK and will be a foreign visitor here, you need to know these 2 things to stay safe and save money.

3. Free Film Festivals

Throughout the month of September, you can brave the slowly dipping temperatures at outdoor film screenings across the city.

From watching Legally Blonde on the Southbank to enjoying a James Bond film while floating in a pool (stranger things have happened at outdoor film screenings, trust me), take advantage of the weather and join hundreds of your newest best friends as you watch a movie outdoors.

Don’t forget to pack a backpack filled with snacks so you’re well prepared to keep everyone (in your family, but also in the general area) happy and full.

Especially if at any point it turns to rain.

Oh, and one final thing: many venues require that you bring your own blankets if you’re sitting on the ground, so check in advance what the seating arrangements are so you’re not caught out sitting on a pile of dirt when you thought you’d be given a chair all to yourself.

What to Do in London in September for Families

4. kensington palace.

One of my favorite things to do in London in September is to visit Kensington Palace .

Situated in Hyde Park, Kensington Palace is Will and Kate’s current home and a worthwhile visit any day of the year.

But until the end of September, you can often explore the gardens with a free tour, and let me tell you, there is nothing more quintessentially British than exploring the gardens of a royal residence.

5. Totally Thames

The River Thames is the longest river in England and runs from the Cotswolds through London and out to the sea.

Every September, the Thames Festival Trust (who knew that was a thing?) is obsessed with everything Thames-related and hosting events, boat tours, and walks along the river.

Many events are free; just remember it’s pronounced “TEMZ”, not “THAIMS” and you’ll be all set to fit right in as a river enthusiast.

6. Richmond Park

Unlike the perfectly groomed central London parks and gardens, Richmond Park offers a more ‘natural’ day away from it all.

Famous for its deer and wildlife, the early days of September in London are a great time to visit while it’s still warm enough to sit around and talk about life as opposed to freezing your butt off and pretending that you’re having a great time getting frostbite.

Keep an eye out for the park schedule as they often offers free “open days” where you can learn more about the history of the park and go on guided tours.

Even better?

Free pony rides.

In fact, it’s a great attraction in London for toddlers who will appreciate just being able to run around in the open space and see the wildlife. 

Iconic September Things to Do in London

7. columbia road flower market.

Every Sunday in London’s East End, you can embrace your inner hipster by strolling along Columbia Road and checking out local shops, galleries, and flower stalls. 

This is a great departure from some of the more notable (and thus touristy) markets in London like Borough Market .

It’s not on every single “things to do in London” list ever, which means that you have a better chance of actually doing as the Londoners do and meeting some local people rather than just fighting your way through swarms of group tours.

It’s also a great date idea in London !

You’ll find them from around 8am to 3pm, so don’t leave it too late or you’ll miss out.

Don’t forget to stop and smell the roses.

STOP GROANING, I HAD TO.

8. Walk along the Southbank

The Southbank is a great place to walk around in September when it’s still warm enough to not be in your winter boots and the sun is glistening off the water.

In addition to some famous attractions like the London Eye (though you’ll want to check out my article on whether the London Eye is Worth it ) and the London Aquarium (again, see my take on what to avoid in London ), there are loads of places to sit and enjoy a picnic on a bench or little patches of greenery to soak up some nature.

The best part is that it’s completely free, so when it comes to choosing from the things to do in September in London, it gets high marks for not emptying your wallet and also getting you out and about.

9. Buckingham Palace

September is the last month that you can visit Buckingham Palace before it’s closed again for visitors for the remainder of the year, so if you were thinking about buying tickets to Buckingham Palace, make sure to schedule your trip for September.

We’ve done the Buckingham Palace tour once before and it was a unique experience.

We got to go into the backyard, basically, after we had finished touring the rooms we were allowed to go in, and it really helps to highlight the importance that Britain as a whole places on the Royal Family.

As Americans, it was interesting to look through history from that lens and see the important meeting rooms and reception rooms used by the monarch.

10. Frieze Sculpture in Regent’s Park

This yearly public art exhibition begins in September in Regent’s Park and is a curated collection of sculptures from international artists that provide an opportunity for the public to interact with and appreciate art while enjoying the gorgeous weather in the park.

The leading galleries of the city all come together in this effort, with a free and open exhibition featuring larger than life sculptures and a fascinating glimpse of contemporary art in the open air.

11. The Proms

If you’ve never been to a classical music concert, the BBC Proms are the best place to start in London.

This series of concerts takes place throughout the summer, ending in September, and “Proms” is short for “promenade,” or inexpensive and casual concerts that give Londoners and visitors and opportunity to engage with classical music in a different format.

You can get standing tickets for under £10, and you can choose from a variety of performances throughout the first week of September, leading up to the famous Last Night of the Proms.

It’s a wonderful way to get involved in London culture while also getting to experience the magnificent Royal Albert Hall during a September in London.

12. Hyde Park

As mentioned, September in London is typically a great time for weather still, with some Septembers bringing warm summer weather until the end, so put your shorts on and head over to Hyde Park for an afternoon spent in one of London’s best parks (and the largest within the center of London).

Head over to the Peter Pan statue to see this iconic monument, or take a stroll along The Serpentine, a famous lake filled with paddle boats and lots and lots of geese, ducks, and other birds who call it home.

Hyde Park is also adjacent to Kensington Gardens, where you’ll find beautifully manicured gardens around the back of Kensington Palace and another lake with plenty of people (and bird) watching opportunities.

13. National Theatre

Known as the “National” for short, the National Theatre is one of London’s leading theatres that has a full schedule throughout the year of plays of all genres.

Many famous plays that then go on to other destinations around the globe start at the National, including the recent Lehman Brothers Trilogy that started its run in the National Theatre and then moved on to Broadway in New York City.

Tickets can be less expensive than shows on the West End, and theatre lovers should make sure to check out the schedule for September 2023 here to see what’s playing during your visit.

14. Boat Cruise along the River Thames

Make use of the last of the warm weather months in London by taking a cruise along the Thames.

You’ll go past iconic landmarks like the Houses of Parliament and the Tower of London along the way, and better yet, you’ll get to experience London from the river which is how it would have originally been seen by many who used the Thames as a transit and trade hub.

Book an evening cruise for some beautiful sunsets and live music, or opt for a cheaper, day-time tour that just allows you to take in the view at your own pace.

You can also use a Thames river cruise to actually travel through London from pier to pier, or you can decide to hop on a “round trip” experience that starts and ends at the same pier.

15. Street Food Markets

London is bustling with street food markets, from the iconic Borough Market to lesser known markets like Leather Lane Market that operates during lunchtime on weekdays.

Food markets are an important part of Londoner culture, with many choosing to go to the markets for lunch or dinner instead of heading to a sit-down restaurant or bringing food from home.

The variety of stalls, smells, and varied cuisine means you can walk around with friends, all getting exactly what they want, and experiencing the fast-paced London “vibe” that makes this city such a fun place to work and visit.

16. Westminster Abbey

If you’re heading to Westminster Abbey in September, you’ll miss the peak summer rush and get lower crowds and a more intimate experience in this beautiful historic attraction.

It’s known for being the resting place of many notable Brits, as well as, of course, made famous by iconic royal weddings.

This attraction is open year-round, not just in September, but September is a lovely time to go to Westminster Abbey if you haven’t before.

17. London Escape Room

There are, as always, some days in London where you’ll find the weather might not be quite up to scratch.

In that case, head indoors to an escape room.

Famous worldwide nowadays, escape rooms are essentially live brainteaser experiences where you and your group are “locked in” a room and made to figure out clues to find your way out.

London has a variety of escape room companies throughout the city, and it’s a great team bonding experience and way to make sure you have an indoor activity planned if the rain has set in.

18. Meatopia

Want to go to a festival that’s all about meat?

Yes, really.

Meatopia takes place every September in London in Shadwell, around Tobacco Dock where you’ll find lots of live-fire chefs cooking up delicious dishes over the course of 3 days.

There’s also craft breweries who come to visit to provide some drinks, plenty of live music for entertainment, and everything from roaring fire pits to simple grills providing space to cook the freshest ingredients.

Meatopia is a well-attended and much-loved event in London in September and if you consider yourself a carnivore, it’s not one to miss.

19. Kew Gardens

London’s botanical gardens are a must-see in September as a sort of “last hoorah” before the autumn and winter scenery sets in.

Kew Gardens is a wonderful place for a long walk on a weekend afternoon, or you can take the train ride around the gardens to see it all from a different vantage point.

Stunning greenhouses give you the chance to step out of any unexpected weather if you need to, or you can take a picnic and enjoy a relaxing day out on the grass.

Kew is a truly spectacular destination in London, and September is a great time to visit.

20. Secret Cinema

Just like the name suggests, Secret Cinema is all about performing in secret locations across London, with each run being related to a particular movie or TV show.

Past experiences have included Grease, Stranger Things, Guardians of the Galaxy and Dirty Dancing, and while you can check out the schedule for September 2023 to book yourself onto a performance, you won’t be given the exact location until nearer the time (hence the secret!).

You also are not allowed to bring phones in (they’ll give you a place to check them outside the venue) as you will be fully immersed in the world that comes to life when you step into one of these live theatre experiences.

21. Classic Boat Festival

With around 40 classic and vintage boats down by St. Katharine Docks as part of the Totally Thames festival, the classic boat festival is a great way to get up close to some absolutely beautiful boats.

They also offer talks, activities, and fun for kids as part of the Classic Boat Festival, so if you’re around London in September and a fan of maritime life, don’t miss out.

22. Street Art Walking Tour

While the weather is still good enough to want to take tours outside, try a street art walking tour!

Street art is prevalent in London’s East End, not as graffiti to deface property, but as beautiful expressions of art covering up some quite frankly gritty looking building, underpasses, and more.

And, of course, the famous Banksy is known for his work in London!

This walking tour is for art lovers who want to see a different side of the London art world far removed from the pristine halls of the National Gallery.

23. Turning Tides Festival

This free world music festival takes place in London in September, bringing together inspiring voices from around the globe.

With street food, a pop-up bar, and a promise of “soulful summer sounds,” it’s a great way to end the summer and has everything from samba to hip hop.

Held in Greenwich, this is a must-see if you want something unique to do in London in September.

Held by the Alzheimer’s Society, Memory Walks take place in autumn each year in London, giving you the opportunity to walk in memory of loved ones as well as to raise money for a cure.

This is a fantastic cause and way to support a UK charity while getting fresh air and meeting new people in September in London.

25. Greenwich Comedy Festival

The Greenwich comedy festival takes some of the best and biggest names in UK comedy and puts them under one roof for a hilarious festival that takes place each September.

The event takes place at the National Maritime Museum and past performers have included Stewart Lee, Frankie Boyle, Kerry Godliman and more.

Street food stalls and pop-up bar options turn this from your standard comedy show into a true festival with a top notch line-up and options for socializing.

26. Battersea Power Station

The new Battersea Power Station , reopened in 2022, is a great way to spend a September day in London as this shopping and entertainment complex is right on the river.

Hang out during the day to look around the stores and get some ice cream, or hang around at night to enjoy dinner and drinks and enjoy the twinkling lights as the sun goes down.

Battersea Power Station has gone to great lengths to combine current entertainment with historic importance, preserving much of the original architecture that makes this building such an iconic part of the river skyline.

27. Shopping at Westfields

There are two Westfields locations in London, Stratford and Shepherd’s Bush.

These are basically giant malls, with mostly interior stores so you can spend a few hours browsing some of the most iconic British stores in September.

There are also plenty of restaurants on-site, which means you can combine a trip to somewhere like John Lewis to check out their lines of teapots with a trip to Nando’s, one of the most popular British chains that serve up great chicken!

This is a particularly good option if you’re in London for awhile and have time to spare, as I wouldn’t recommend someone with just 24 hours in London to spend time in a shopping mall.

28. Take in the View from Primrose Hill

So you’re afraid of heights, but you still want to see a gorgeous London skyline?

Primrose Hill has you covered.

This beautiful part of Regent’s Park is not too tough to climb if you take your time (it is a relatively steep incline, but we’re not talking real hiking here, just a bit of huffing and puffing if you’re out of shape!)

It’s common to take a blanket to sit out on the hill and watch the sunset over London in September.

Of course, since it’s in a park, it’s completely free!

From here, you can a stunning view of the London skyline featuring the BT Tower, the Shard, and the London Eye.

29. Climb the Monument

Impressive as it is from below, with its images of the Great Fire of London, the true views await you at the top.

Climb up the 311 steps and you are treated to panoramic views of the city of London in September, just as the leaves start to change.

The Monument ’s proximity to Tower Bridge means it’s the best view of this iconic landmark.

Tickets to the top are currently £5.80 for adults and it’s a great value price for one of the best city center views London has to offer.

Designed and built as a lasting legacy of the Great Fire that gutted London in 1666, this 202-foot viewing point is a great portal into the city’s long past and sweeping present.

30. HMS Belfast

Maybe one of the coolest things to do in September in London, the HMS Belfast is a real warship that has now retired into the more peaceful life of hosting exhibits that tell visitors all about Britain’s naval history.

Operated by the Imperial War Museum, this imposing ship is moored on the Thames, providing a space where the whole family can explore the nooks and crannies of a real Town-class light cruiser, climbing stairs and ladders to see the interactive displays inside and the great river view of the city on the outside.

You can’t overstate the importance of maritime power in making Britain and London what they are today, and there’s nowhere better to get an inside view of that history than here.

31. Royal Opera House

The Royal Opera House , a beautiful building in Covent Garden, features ballet and opera performances throughout the week.

It’s an incredible opportunity to see professional dancers and opera singers in a stunning setting, and you can check out their schedule here.

32. Camden Market

Shoes? Homegoods? Souvenirs?

Something just a little bit different?

Camden Market is the place to be in September, considered to be an “alternative” area, it’s still popular for all types of visitors.

Don’t be surprised if you come across some funky looking stalls or some fashion styles you’ve never seen before – it’s all part of the fun of Camden.

33. Holland Park

Located near the Notting Hill area, Holland Park is a quirky park that provides a nice hidden oasis as one of the best things to do in September with kids.

I would particularly recommend families check this out as they have a great playground and a unique Japanese garden that comes complete with free roaming peacocks!

This is a small enough park that you can really get to know every inch, and the location is absolutely amazing with close ties to South Kensington and in a really nice part of town.

34. Epping Forest

Need some fresh air?

In September, take a trip out to Epping Forest , an easy day trip from London that will get you into over 5,000 acres of green space, perfect for exploring on foot or by bike.

There are plenty of paths, marked trails, and woodland walks in this ancient forest.

Keep an eye out for wildlife, including deer, bats, butterflies, rare beetles, and more.

Epping Forest is well connected to central London by tube and train, so you can get there by taking the Central Line to Loughton, Theydon Bois or Epping tube stations.

35. Rock ‘n’ Roll History Tour

Whether you’re a fan of the Beatles, Hendrix, or the many other names that have come out of the London Rock ‘n’ Roll scene, this walking tour will talk you past the iconic places that have been visited, played at, or lived in by some of the world’s most famous musicians.

This is a fantastic London walking tour for music lovers, and a great surprise if you’ve got a fan in tow!

36. St. James Park

Right in front of Buckingham Palace is one of the most picturesque London parks, St. James Park , and you can’t miss it if you just keep walking towards the London Eye from Buckingham Palace.

There are a ton of geese floating down the lake, an awesome photo op, and space for sitting on benches and sprawling out on the grass.

I would make it a point to take a walk through this park in September.

It’s small enough that it’s completely manageable in a shot amount of time and you can truly feel the London buzz.

37. Battersea Park

Just south of the river, Battersea Park is a gorgeous park used by locals and visitors and often hosts things like food festivals in September.

It’s a great place to escape when you want to get out of the city center.

It does have a small children’s zoo that’s well loved, the Peace Pagoda, as well as tracks and sporting space.

A lot of London’s cultural scene goes into semi-hibernation mode over the summer, but come autumn it kicks back into gear with landmark museum exhibitions, new theatre and art shows and brand new food and drink openings. 

There’s also a whole host of city-wide fests taking over the capital, including Open House London  – giving us a chance to get a sneak peek inside usually private buildings –   London Design Festival and Totally Thames  – the brilliant celebration of London’s watery main artery complete with an illuminated flotilla installation . 

While autumn is still on the horizon, summer isn’t over yet. So make sure you grab your final chance to enjoy the spoils of the season by booking a seat at some of London’s best rooftop bars and alfresco restaurants and lolling about in the city’s best urban beaches , parks and lidos . 1.  join a boozy painting class inspired by painting class inspired by lake garda.

Oktoberfest in London

Munich’s world-famous Oktoberfest actually mostly takes place in September every year, and London likes to get involved as much as possible without having to deal with the massive crowds and jacked-up hotel prices they’d get in Munchen…

Lots of pubs and venues around the city will put on special Oktoberfest celebrations, and there are even a few “Oktoberfest-style” pubs and beer gardens that are open year round anyways.

You can find out events and parties happening around the city as it gets closer to Oktoberfest time by checking the listings on Time Out London and Design My Night . I personally love celebrating at German Kraft , a brewery located next to the Mercato Metropolitano in Elephant and Castle. They have a German-style drinking atmosphere in their stunning beer garden all year round, but during Oktoberfest time, they do special treats like oompah bands and dancing on tables… you’ll feel like you’ve been drunkenly transported to Munich!

The BBC Proms finishes up in the first half of September. Each year, the BBC Proms host two months of concerts over the summer, aiming to bring the finest classical music to as many people as possible at affordable prices and in an informal atmosphere, with standing tickets or high-up gallery tickets from just £6.

“Proms” is short for “promenade concerts”, which tend to be informal and offer affordable tickets. The tradition of “promming” happens when you take part by buying one of those inexpensive tickets, with up to 1,350 of these usually being on offer for each BBC Proms show, which happen at the famous Royal Albert Hall.

Brace yourself for a Persian feast at Berenjak Borough

Don't miss the chance to visit Berenjak Borough , a Persian restaurant specialising in home-style Iranian cuisine. The 'Feast' set menu at £45pp offers a chance to sample a variety of dishes, from crispy flatbreads and herb-infused side salads to spicy poussin or lamb grills. You don't want to miss out on the starters – we tried Mirza Ghasemi, an aubergine dip made with tomatoes and eggs, and the feta dish, a whole block of salty goodness that we devoured in seconds. It's seriously good.

These went amazingly with the Taftoon (tanoor baked sourdough flatbread) and Barbari (clay baked version), which tasted even better when the grilled meat course was plated up with the juices dripping into the bread. The cocktails are refreshing – we tried the preserved lemon margarita – and the wine list authentic, with bottles sourced from Georgia, Morocco, Turkey and more. They also do a great bottomless food and booze deal – sign us up!

1. All aboard an Art Deco train!

A healthy chunk of Londoners take a train or two into or around the city most days of their lives. But what if, and stay with us for a moment, you could make that simple act… historic. A restored Art Deco style train is prepped, ready to make down the platform like it’s the 1930s and take passengers on a tubular time capsule with them. September 9 and 10 is when you can check out this curio into London’s past and step inside the gloriously designed – both on the exterior and interior – beasts.  Read more about it here .

2. Dance around at one of the few remaining London festivals

While many may be of the belief that the soundsystems of the great outdoors in London are dialled down to zero after 11:59pm on August 31 , this is actually, shockingly,  not  the case. There are a few stragglers latching on in early-to-mid September, so you won’t have to put away those bucket hats or buckets of glitter – the party is still very much in the parks, which are crying out to be filled. Here is what’s on the roster for the rest of the summer, and remember: it’s your last chance for an outdoor festival until ~May 2024 (in London, at least).

🍺 Pub in the Park (September 1, 2, 3) : Chiswick House and Gardens – McFly, Squeeze and Ronan Keeting make up the bill at this start-of-the-month boogie-woogie. 

🕺 Creekside (September 2) : Deptford (multiple venues) –  a brand new festival with hush-hush headliners and an array of brilliant soundsystems. 

🥳 Boogietown (September 9-10) : Apps Court Farm, Walton-on-Thames – Billy Ocean, Earth Wind & Fire, The Tramps, Fatback Band, and Armand Van Helden should be enough to get you running down these parts.  

💃 Waterworks (September 16) : Gunnersbury Park – festival season winds town but Waterworks turns up with bill including Elijah & Skilliam, Shanti Celeste, Saoirse, and many more!

1️⃣ One Out Festival (September 16) : Apps Court Farm, Walton-on-Thames – Mike Skinner and Interplanetary Criminal take to the stage to wave farewell to London festival season in style. 

3. Head to a chill festival of all things frozen

No, this isn’t the coldest place on earth, but it is a returning pop-up experience that heads to Covent Garden each year that essentially begs you to eat lots of ice cream and cold drinks. At the festival, there will be items–frozen drinks! gelato! desserts!–from familiar faces including Kocktail (who have a Wes Anderson-inspired stand), Bubble Bros , Pan’n’Ice , Avobar , Chestnut Bakery , SUSHISAMBA and many more. As you sift through the piazza, you’ll be greeted by  all  the stands reeling you in with the tempting chilly goods, including margaritas, negronis, doughnuts,  gelato, and Frosé prosecco. Watch out for brain freeze, but this place is the ultimate end-of-summer cool down. You’ll also catch an appearance from the 3D-printed ice cream kings over at Ayce , which will need to jump high up your lists. 4. Scale the newly-crowned highest free viewing platform in Europe

If you can’t make it out of the city to climb, I don’t know, Mount Snowdon, you can just take a high-speed (42-second) lift up the second-tallest building in the city after the Shard. September 27 marks the date of when you’ll be able to whizz up the 58 floors and officially be able to say you’ve visited the highest free viewing platform in Europe, the accolade that Horizon 22 will be able to boast from that day forward. If you’re (im)patiently waiting for a new view out of the city, from 254 metres up, you’ll be able to book your spot here from September 20 onwards. 5. Check out a brand new free festival that celebrates black culture and creativity

Black on the Square is a debut event, launching at Trafalgar Square as a daytime celebration of black culture and talent across the city. It’s free, so you can head down anytime between 12pm – 6pm on September 2 , and you’ll be met with a string of spoken word, jazz, rap, and soul performances – as well as live DJ sets hosted by collections – before checking out the heap of art and fashion pieces on display. Of course, you can then head to the many stalls set up at Black on the Square to taste a host of delicious plates from the Caribbean and Africa and check out the many artisan accessories, gifts, and delicacies available to sift through at the square.  Read more about Black on the Square here .

6. Crane your neck to see all the giraffes on this trail around Croydon

Send this one to all your 6ft+ mates; there’s a trail in town that might speak to them. Just kidding, tall kings – but there really is a herd of giraffes dotted around, and they’re each kitted out in a unique design for the Croydon Stands Tall event. It aims to celebrate the diversity of the area while raising money for homelessness charity Crisis . It comes in collaboration with Wild In Art , who also played a hand in this summer’s giant Morph trail around the city. There are 30 of the 8ft giraffes scattered around, and you can catch sight of them around Croydon until October 21 .  Read more about the trail here .

7. Toast the celebration of Batman Day at this pop-up exhibition

Holy immersive experience, Robin! Batman Day is recognised on September 16 , but this pop-up is making it a three-day because they recognise its vast importance. From September 15-17 , you can celebrate the many guises of the caped crusader, from special edition comic books to memorabilia donned by Michael Keaton to costumes rocked during both Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of the Joker. It’s a good time for the arrival of ‘Batman Unmasked’, too – this year marks 15 years since the release of Christopher Nolan’s seminal The Dark Knight (2008) as well as the 100th anniversary of Warner Bros.  Find more information on Batman Unmasked here .

8. Get creative at Paint In The Dark

In most cities, you can have plenty of fun in the dark. Dancefloors to fill, illuminated art installations to gaze at, pop-up cinemas to enjoy at dusk, and now? Painting. Having already enjoyed success in Paris, Paint In The Dark, the dimly lit and glowing setting where attendees can practise their strokes with a drink in hand has arrived in London. Fluorescent colours can be your inspiration for your evening as you get taken along the way by a talented art facilitator, meaning this event is perfect for the most amateur painters as well as true talents. Two drinks (wine, beer, or soft drinks) are included in the price, so book your spot now for 90 minutes of gleaming canvases and vibrant brushing.

9. Book those Oktoberfest celebrations early

Yes, the clue about what month this is supposed to be in might be lodged into the name, but that hasn’t stopped the Oktoberfest celebrations from stretching out into September as the years have passed. So get those tankards out, dust off the lederhosen, and crack out the dancing shoes for plenty of early Oktoberfest fun in the city. Take the German Gymnasium , which kicks off on September 15 . Each day until the end of October means a Bavarian bonanza complete with Oompah bands and authentic German brews and bites. Read more about it here . 

10. Have a ball at one of London’s many gigs this month

Now, as we mentioned earlier, festival season is starting to wind down (though not quite down and out just yet), but gig season is on the way back up, and there’s plenty going on this month. Live music is alive and well in the capital, and here are some of the finest acts playing in September .

👑 Royal Blood (September 1) : Pryzm – rockers take to the intimate Kingston venue for a loud first-of-the-month eruption. 

🎉 Chris Farren (September 2) : The Lexington –  fresh off the back of ‘Doom Singer’, the indie pop songwriter is taking his sweet and often anguished tones to north London. 

💡 Fred Again (September 4-8) : Alexandra Palace – his name has been on everyone’s lips for a good while now, and he’s got a sold-out, four-night run at Ally Pally this month to show for it. 

😎 Siouxsie (September 6-7) : Troxy – t he eponymous banshee is back playing shows again after the best part of a decade, and you can be spellbound by her voice in London this September.

🥲 Hot Mulligan & Spanish Love Songs (September 7) : Kentish Town Forum – an emo double-header for the ages promises stomps and singalongs. 

✈️ Busted (September 10, September 27) : The O2 –  he told me he built a time machine like one in the fiiiilm I’ve seeeeeeen (and it was a spitting image of the O2 arena). 

🍬 Sugababes (September 15) : The O2 –  if you’re ready for me boy, you better push the button (to go and see Sugababes in concert) and let me know. 

🌟 Shania Twain (September 16-17): The O2 – lot of BLOODY good gigs at the O2 arena this month, isn’t there? Here’s another – we don’t need to explain Shania Twain to you, just source yourself a ticket and burst your lungs to the singalongs. 

🔥 Seal (September 17) : London Palladium – celebrating three decades since the release of his first two record, the ‘Kiss From A Rose’ singer is back to put on a show in the city.

🐰 Echo And The Bunnymen (September 18) : Royal Albert Hall – Monday nights don’t get too much better than catching a legendary band in a setting like this. The killing time, unwillingly mine. 

🕺 Dexys Midnight Runners (September 20) : London Palladium – there’s more to these guys than just COME ON EILEEN, I’ll have you know. But you’ll also probably get to hear that. 

🎶 Joe Hisaishi (September 22) : Wembley Arena – the Japanese composer, best-known for his work in the Studio Ghibli movies, is here to treat London this month. 

🥹 The National (September 26-27) : The National – after an All Points East headline last summer, The National are back for some soft tearjerkers at Ally Pally this year. 

✨Arlo Parks (September 28) : Hammersmith Apollo –  the Mercury Music Prize winner is back playing a London headliner to bless us with her soothing melodies. 

🌹 PJ Harvey (September 28-29) : Roundhouse – letting England London shake with a pair of headliners in Camden.

💥 James Blake (September 28) : Alexandra Palace – bringing his idiosyncratic R&B vocals to the big stage, James Blake returns to London this Autumn for a giant show.

⚡ New Order (September 29) : The O2 – love’s got the world in motion and I know you’ll want to see this arena show. 

🎙️ Hak Baker (September 29) : KOKO – a unique and fine performer that is bringing his storytelling ‘G-Folk’ to Camden at the end of the month

11. Commence festive season the right way (yes, really)

September? Festive season? What seasonally confused writer is churning out this article, then? Don’t shoot the messenger but, as of August 31 , it’s officially possible to kick off your Christmas shopping at the, quite frankly, ironically early starts at Liberty . The phrase  it comes around earlier every year, doesn’t it?  really does apply here, as the brand, who usually wait until September before their grand unveiling clearly got overexcited here and broke out the baubels. Other stores will no doubt follow the lead of Liberty but for now, this is where to get your Christmas shopping done before the crowds really take over.  Read more about the opening of Liberty here . 

12. Hit up the ultimate festival for sneakerheads

Should you be partial to owning a pair of trainers or 25, the Sneakerness Festival is going to be running towards your to-do lists. At the Truman Brewery on September 30 , sneakerheads can indulge their passion by not only checking out the latest and best pairs of kicks, but also listening to panel events, taking part in competitions, getting snaps in the photo booth, and cutting shapes to the celebrity DJs playing throughout the day. 13. Try the wines of California at the Humble Grape tasting experience

A tasting experience and supper club are taking place at Humble Grape in late September, and to kick away those end-of-summer blues, you’ll be transported to sunny California . The two-hour tasting extravaganza hits Liverpool Street on September 26 when, on top of the wines from various producers—Napa Valley, Happy Canyon, and more—you’ll get to hear tales about the land and the history of winemaking in this region. Fast forward two days and it’ll be time for the supper club in Fleet Street, where guests can try five selected Rombauer wines, alongside delightful bites including bream ceviche, confit duck wings and pulled lamb taco. 14. Waltz into a new Italian Trattoria in Soho

Keep those sunnies in your bags this month, because you could be taking a quick voyage to the golden land of Italia from the grey(er) streets of Soho . Bocconcino’s second London location arrives on September 21 , bringing us interiors to marvel at and Venetian-inspired dishes to drool over. Tagliatelle with Black Truffle beckons and I for one will be heeding that call.  Find out more and book here . 

15. Have a right knees up at the Harvest Festival

London’s cockney royals are known as the legendary Pearly Kings and Queens . They were founded in 1875. Though not as many of the strikingly dressed cockneys that make up the group exist today, they still get together every year for events, one of which is the lively Harvest Festival. Taking place on September 24 this year at Guildhall Yard , it’s a free event that encourages charity donations, so be ready to give whatever you can before enjoying the live entertainment and dancing on offer.  Read the full story about the Pearly Kings And Queens in London here .

16. Get out to a new free festival in Camden that honours new stars in the Walk Of Fame

We’ll be hoping for a  Sunny Afternoon in September, as a new festival is marking new inductees to the Camden Walk Of Fame, which includes the likes of The Kinks, Janis Joplin and Billy Bragg. Between September 4-9 , 11 new acts will be added to the Camden Walk Of Fame to join Amy Winehouse, David Bowie and the other legends making up the mile.  Read more about the festival and the Walk Of Fame here .

17. Get into the Rugby World Cup action

Following the success of the Lionesses at the football World Cup this summer, England will have even more motivation to go on a similar run at the Rugby World Cup . It only comes around every four years, and the squad will be hoping to channel their inner 2003, 20 years on and get their hands on the Webb Ellis Cup once again. But, plenty of other nations – including Ireland , who lifted the Six Nations earlier this year – will have something to say about that. Though it might be taking place in France this time, you’ll be able to catch all the action in venues around London, so there’s no excuse not to get involved.

It all kicks off on September 8 , but if you’re impatient you can attend an event with Rugby podcast  The Good, The Bad, And The Rugby  at Libertine, the bar beneath the Royal Exchange , for a slap meal. It’s hosted by James Haskell, Mike Tindall, and broadcaster Alex Payne, and you can find out more here !

18. Hone the Jedi way at this masterful Star Wars exhibit

Since April, Star Wars fans around London have been floating towards South Kensington like an army of Boba Fetts. It’s not because there’s a bounty ready to collect or anything — no, but there might be something that will leave you feeling equally rich. An exhibition, known as The Fans Strike Back sits on the Old Brompton Road, offering Jedi fanatics the chance to gawk at over 30 different sculptures and host of figurines from the beloved franchise, and even get some snaps with the replicas and memorabilia on display. 19. Attend the giant V&A Chanel exhibition

A landmark moment in the London fashion calendar comes in the form of the giant exhibit of controversial and momentous designer Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel. It will span through her career, from her Parisian roots and her first 1910 boutique, to her final collection in 1971. Of course, the exhibition will look at the establishment of the House of Chanel, and tell visitors the story of her designs such as the legendary tweed suit.  Read more about the V&A Chanel exhibition here .

20. Have a day out that’s dedicated to wine

A day cherry-picked straight from fermented grape heaven. Wineyard arrives in Clapton on September 10 for a single day – a day covered in chardonnay, soaked in sauvignon, and (probably) not designed for a quiet Sunday. It runs between 12 – 7pm at the Round Chapel, and you’ll even get a complimentary glass to take with you. Find out more here .

21. Bask in the glow of Crystal Palace Park at this lovely free festival

You’d be forgiven for thinking that a festival in a picturesque south London park, complete with an outrageous roster of food, activities and performers, would command a fee to attend. But nay! This day out in Crystal Palace Park will set you back nothing but your time, and it’ll waste precisely zero seconds of that. Once you’re peckish after a yoga session or funfair rides, you can munch down on tasty Caribbean dishes from Mumma G’s Cookhouse or bites from Sticks’n’Sushi , before checking out live music from the likes of Saiming, Some Voices, BollyQueer, Sherkia Sherand and the Crystal Palace Band. You can even grab a glass of chilled champagne for a toast to the close of summer. It takes place between 10am and 7pm on September 17 , and you can find out more here .

22. Attend the reopening of a lively London bar with added retractable rooftop

Any keen frequenters of The Hawk’s Nest will have noticed that things have been a little different around there recently. A visit of late still gets you a helping of great cocktails and grub, but it’s a little bit of a building site as things stand. Now, the glow-up is almost complete, and Hawk’s Nest version 2.0 is ready to be unveiled on September 7 , with its retractable roof in tow. 300 people can fit into the newly revamped garden space, which is said to be the largest of its kind in the UK. 23. Attend a day filled with gin and rum

Yes, a festival dedicated entirely to Gin and Rum is hitting the capital, meaning you no longer have to debate which one is better… you can just have both. On September 23 , you’ll be guided around the KIA Oval to try out over 120 different national and international liquors as you bounce along to the DJs playing throughout the event. When you get tired and tipsy, you can head home with your complimentary cup with carry satchel, and a refreshed palette for the best gin and rum you’ll find around these parts. 24. Have a stroll around the London Design Festival’s pieces at Greenwich Peninsula

Public art reigns supreme at Greenwich Peninsula , with the London Design Festival running for two weeks in the second half of this month. Expect to see colours, lights and crowds of people in awe at what’s on offer this year. A 3D site-specific light sculpture from Murugiah and a sea of Damien Hirst statue are among what can be found, and you can sift through the London Design Fest between September 16 – 24 .  Find out more here .

25. Head out on a literary walking tour around London

‘Twas [probably] a drizzly day in the London summer when these London factfinders decided to lay out the perfect stop-offs for book lovers around the city. If, definitely not like me, you will be throwing your toys out of the pram about the end of the summer (or lack of) this year by hiding away with a book, then you might need to force yourself out of the house. Enter the Secret London literary walking tour, with destinations including The Old Curiosity Shop, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, and obviously Platform 9 3/4. Check out our handy map and guide here .

26. Say cheers to the inaugural Camden Beer Festival

‘Twas a beautiful Friday in September and the gang decided to get together and drink some beer. And where better to begin the night than at a debut Camden festival by the good folks at the Farrier pub , a true Camden market staple. It’s the first of what promises to be an annual series of beer festivals that showcases the hoppiest, fizziest, most ale-crazy local breweries around. Sip on pints out of the unique Camden Beer Festival beer glass (which you’ll receive, alongside three beer tokens on entry) before lapping up the unique beer cocktails (yes) created by the bar team. 27. Join the first-ever Pride swim

After the jubilance of the Pride parade in July, the fun is not over. The first Pride swim is taking place in the city over at the Royal London Docks , and participants can choose distances of 200m, 400m, 600m, 800m and 1,000m in the event where everyone will receive a medal. It’s part of the Out And Wild festival which helps to enhance the wellbeing of the LGBTQ+ community. Following the swim, a party will take place with DJs, unmatched vibes, and a goody bag for all. 28. Lose yourself in one of London’s many art exhibitions

London wouldn’t be the city we know without its ever-evolving stream of art that rolls in and out of the city at the most consistent of pace. Here are some of the very finest displays you can check out throughout the month of September .

29. Attend a pop-up showcasing South Asia’s top sustainable artisan fashion brands

Kaanjj are launching a mid-September pop-up to coincide with South Asian Heritage Month, bringing unique labels and designs that you’d likely not find elsewhere. Head to the King’s Road on September 15-17 to sift through 25 sustainable brands that are difficult to source outside of South Asia. 30. Dine at this swanky, newly relaunched Mayfair restaurant

Look at that bar and view. Inviting colours and an inviting proposition of Executive Chef Andrea Cofini heading things up at the relaunched L’Atelier Robuchon , which returns to Mayfair on September 15 . The menu celebrates classics of the Robuchon restaurant group, including the famous Purée de Pomme de Terre, Sea Bream Carpaccio, and Quail with Foie Gras.  Find out more here .

31. Gaze at a mixed-reality butterfly trail

We’ve had our fair share of dazzling displays at Outernet, but this one that’s flying right at us on September 20 is too pretty to ignore. A butterfly trail will make up this mixed reality segment in Tottenham Court Road, allowing visitors to flutter in at no cost and take in the botanical canvas on the 16k wrap-around screens.  Find out more here .

32. Be captivated by one of the many theatre performances this month

Soak in the finest offerings the West End has to offer this month. From musicals to laugh-out-loud comedy plays, you’ll always be spoiled for choice when it comes to a trip to the theatre in the Big Smoke.

🎵 In Other Words (September 5-30) : Arcola Theatre –  a thought-provoking play exploring the transformative nature of music when caring for those living with dementia. The show has toured the UK and won awards, and is now landing in Dalston. 

🕺 Frank & Percy (September 8 – December 3) : The Other Palace Theatre – Ian McKellen and Roger Allam star in this comedy hit about two men and their canine pals. 

🎤 Sister Act The Musical (from September 8) : The Cliff’s Pavillion – a giant 12-month extension for one of the best-known musicals you’ll come across.

🎭 Les Misérables (from September 25) : Sondheim Theatre – you know the drill: this time in a new production and exciting new cast including Luke Kempner, Katie Hall, Will Callan and more.

33. Indulge in a Hoxton weekly wine club

We’ve already professed our love for Eline , the cosy neighbourhood restaurant in Hoxton, so it’s only logical that we champion their brand new Tuesday wine club. Guests can attend and try two glasses of a weekly selected win for £15 alongside Eline’s seasonal menu. 34. Learn about some of London’s female criminals of the past

London is awash with tales of trials, hunts and executions in its gritty past. Many of us are curious about this side of the city’s history, only when reading about it we’ll find that most tales only hone in on the male criminals. This tour delves into the stories of four women who were convicted felons in the 1800s and early 1900s. You might not have heard of them, but there are interesting stories to hear at the experience. 35. Attend a reimagining of a fair that dates back to the 12th century

Summer is on the wane, but Londoners will get the chance to have a nosy at both the largest fair in the city as well as one that reimagines a fair that dates all the way back to the 12th century. The Bartholemew Fair melds together live performances, entertainment including vertical dancing, and even an immersive circus experience. Running until September 16 , you’ll find a completely gratis schedule to sift through, and will be just the tonic for curing those end-of-summer blues. 36. Ring in Mexican Independence Day with a feast of live music and flavour

Los Mochis in Notting Hill are giving us the chance to celebrate Dia de la Independencia de Mexico on September 16 . Tap your feet and shake your hips to the live Mariachi band while nibbling on the truffle guacamole on crispy rice, before heading over to the sister bar Vijante87 for some cocktails and after-party shuffling.  Find out more about Los Mochis on their website . 

37. Catch a (very) cheap flick for National Cinema Day

September 2 marks the day of cinema across the country, and if you haven’t seen Barbie or Oppenheimer just yet… why? But also, now is your chance, with tickets dangling in front of your eyes for just £3. There’s really no excuse now. Read more about the offers here .

38. Pretend you’re in Ibiza at this live orchestra event

Used up all your annual leave to escape the rain in July that we endured in London this summer? Smart decision, but it may be leaving you pining for a trip to the Mediterranean right about… now. If you’re unable to attend Ibiza for a party this month, then there’s a tonic just for you here in London, with a live orchestra bringing the dancing formula at The Folly by Drake and Morgan. Tickets come alongside two courses of food, with the event running between 12pm – 6pm. They may not be the standard Ibiza nightclub hours, but a party is guaranteed all the same. Back to school and the summer rush is now over. London in September is still warm and one of my favourite months to visit the city. If you’re looking to visit the capital this month, then here’s the inside scoop as to what’s happening in the UK capital this month: where to go, what to see and all the exhibitions!

The weather in September is as unpredictable as British weather comes. The days are shorter, though still fairly warm. Bursts of sunshine are often punctuated by showers of rain, meaning that you should be prepared for all weather types! The average temperature during the day is 16 degrees C, making September the perfect time to explore the city.

If you’re visiting London in September, you can expect one of two things: plenty of sun  or  plenty of rain. Unfortunately, the weather changes so rapidly around this time of the year that it’s almost impossible to predict which weather pattern you’ll get, meaning that you’ll likely need an umbrella or rain jacket.

As such, you’ll be best served by packing a fall wardrobe. Items including tights, trendy dresses, and cardigans with plenty of layers, coupled with some waterproof shoes will serve you best. I personally recommend packing a pair of boots as these will still look chic when paired with city clothing, and yet be much more waterproof than tennis shoes.

What to do in London in September

It can rain in the Great Smoke around this time of the year. And the best thing to do is be prepared for it. September is a particularly rainy month, meaning that you should be prepared to ditch your outdoor plans and head for the indoor places instead. The middle of the month also happens to signal one of my all time favourite London activities In 2024, the Open House is a 2 week festival which is held in the middle of September and will signal the opening of my places of historic interest that are normally closed to the public. As well as Open House month, September in London also signals the start of Londinium celebrations. London began in its most recent form as the Roman city of ‘Londinium ‘. Scattered throughout the City of London, as well as other areas of the city, you’ll find the remains of times gone by.

Some of my favourite spots include the Roman Amphitheatre (located in the Guildhall and free to visit.), seeing Roman artefacts at the Museum of London and visiting Leadenhall Market (a grand Victorian shopping centre built on what was once the heart of ‘Londinium’).

In September, all those studying in the UK return to school, college or university. As a result, the city is much calmer than normal and there are fewer queues to see some of the best exhibitions the city has to offer. Cooler temperatures mean that even if you head indoors, you’re not missing out on too much good weather!

(17 Gough Square, London EC4A 3DE). The delightful house museum at Gough Square was once inhabited by Samuel Johnson, composer of one of the first English dictionaries. Today, it’s a lovely example of a late 17th-Century house.

(13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London WC2A 3BP). Formerly the home of neo-Classical architect Sir John Soane, who designed buildings such as the Bank of England, upon his death he bequeathed the house and its contents to the nation.

The museum is free to visit and well worth a look around, if only to check out the ecclectic collection and portfolio of paintings to rival any larger museum.

Quirky Sites in London I’m loving this month!

London is a historical city which is absolutely packed with cool, quirky and unusual things to do. From searching for lost treasure along the Thames Foreshore to dining in speakeasy-style bars and restaurants, there’s no shortage of activities in the UK Capital. Here are some of my top picks for secret spots in London in September :

(Trafalgar Square, London WC2N 5DN). With fewer crowds, you’ll have a much better chance of spotting the smallest police station in London , hidden in a corner of Trafalgar Square, no less!

(68 Union St, London SE1 1TD). Held every Sunday from September through to December, the flea market sells vintage treasures and antique collectibles from all over the world. You can find further details on the vintage market on the market’s website .

(Dunstan’s Hill, London EC3R 5DD). St Dunstan in the East first burnt down during the Great Fire of London in 1666. It was partly rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren in the early 1700s (architect of St Paul’s) and entirely rebuilt in the 1800s. Sadly, the church was badly bombed during the Blitz and the decision was taken to transform the ruins into a garden. The only part still standing in its entirety was the steeple, designed by Wren.

September is the start of the European shoulder season, even in the UK capital. What this means for you as a traveller is that the crowds should be much fewer than in the summer and, therefore, the hotel rates should be a lot more competitive! Here are some of the best places to stay in London based on web recommendations, reviews, and location:

I’ve stayed in the Astor Hyde Park Hostel on many occasions while visiting the city. There’s a range of different dorms on offer here, including female-only options. The basement is home to a huge kitchen and dining area while the WiFi is pretty speedy which makes it a great budget option for your London stay!  Check prices and availability here.

This four-star hotel is more budget than some of the other options out there thanks to the fact that the Nadler has done away with many of the extras which you probably wouldn’t use anyway. St Pancras Renaissance

This luxury hotel is located minutes away from King’s Cross and St Pancras International, making it a great base from which to explore the rest of the city. With fall just settling in and the hassles associated with summer travel dwindling, September is the perfect time for a getaway. By now, most tourists will have made their way out of popular destinations, and airfare and hotel rates will start to slide. U.S. News took into account these factors and more, including expert analysis and traveler sentiment, to come up with the best places to visit in September. Sequoia National Park

Moab, Utah, is a good choice for travelers seeking adventure and unparalleled natural beauty on their next vacation. Arches National Park sits a mere 5 miles north of town, making Moab a great home base for activities like hiking, horseback riding and canyoneering. Or, crank up the tunes on a scenic drive through the park. September is warm in the 70s and 80s, which makes other outdoor pursuits like rafting, biking and stargazing ideal.

With average temperatures sitting in the 70s and 80s in September, the Greek island of Santorini entices travelers with favorable weather, sunny skies and warm waters, perfect for swimming at some of Greece's top shorelines like Red Beach and Kamari Beach. After sipping vino at one of the region's top-notch wineries, dine alfresco along Amoudi Bay or take in the island's stunning natural beauty on the roughly 6-mile hike from Fira to Oia. Plan your vacation for mid-September to catch the Ifestia Festival, an annual event paying respect to the island's volcanic history through live music and a fireworks display.

September is the sweet spot for visiting Sequoia National Park – summer crowds thin as kids go back to school and temperatures remain comfortable in the high 60s, but roads and services have not yet closed for the winter season. This makes popular activities like hiking through the Giant Forest and driving the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway even more enjoyable. Arrive on the fourth Saturday of September to take advantage of National Public Lands Day, one of the National Park Service's free admission days.

Adventurous travelers will be enamored with Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the Canadian island of Newfoundland. Not only can visitors sail past a glacier-carved fjord on a boat tour of Western Brook Pond, but they'll have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to walk upon the Earth's exposed mantle in the Tablelands. While summer is a popular time to travel to Gros Morne, a September visit brings added benefits like vibrant fall colors, crowd-free trails and active wildlife.  

Oahu is Hawai'i's most-visited island and Waikiki is one of America's most popular beaches , so if you want ample room to spread out on its famous shores, visiting during the fall shoulder season is your best bet. In September, the island sees fewer tourists but still offers hot, dry weather and warm water ideal for swimming and surfing. The discounted rates in September will also make your vacation that much more relaxing, and you'll be able to experience one of Hawai'i's biggest cultural events, the Aloha Festivals.

Situated off the coast of Queensland, Australia, this chain of 74 islands are loved for their postcard-worthy beaches and proximity to the Great Barrier Reef. Base your stay on popular Hamilton Island, which features an array of adults-only resorts, or camp under the stars on Whitsunday Island, home to the popular Whitehaven Beach. Must-do activities in the Whitsundays include lounging on the sand, snorkeling, scuba diving and sailing. Luckily, travelers who visit in September will be treated to low humidity and consistently sunny skies with average temperatures resting between the high 70s and low 80s.

Although September technically falls within this Washington park's shoulder season, travelers will still find plenty to love about an autumn visit to Mount Rainier National Park. Depending on your elevation, average temperatures can range from the mid-50s to the low 70s in September, and the region's beautiful fall colors make it a perfect time for leaf peeping . Take advantage of the pleasant conditions by hiking the popular Skyline Trail or admiring the stunning views of Mount Rainier from Sunrise, the highest point of the park that can be reached by car.

One of the world's most impressive national parks , Guilin and Lijiang River National Park in southern China is downright magical in September. The weather is cool and dry, making it easy to enjoy the park's mist-covered karst mountains and rice terraces, along with other highlights like the Reed Flute Cave and Elephant Trunk Hill. And while you'll surely want to explore on foot, a guided boat cruise down the Li River is no doubt the best way to soak up Guilin's stunning scenery.

Visiting Arizona's Grand Canyon during its peak summer season can be risky (high daytime desert temperatures and steep hikes don't mix well). September not only offers a slightly cooler climate but fewer crowds to contend with now that the kids will be back in school. The park's South Rim, which is usually bustling with tourists in summer, sees fewer visitors come September, making it a great time for hiking traveler-approved paths like the Rim Trail. What's more, destinations like the highly underrated North Rim are still open throughout the month.

The capital of Wales is a beautiful destination year-round, but September's mild temperatures (think: highs sit in the mid-60s) and colorful fall foliage make this an ideal time to plan a trip. Foodies will love dining on delicious Welsh cuisine at annual events like the Amgueddfa Cymru Food Festival, held at the open-air St Fagans National Museum of History, and the Abergavenny Food Festival, which is hosted by the nearby town of Abergavenny. When you're not enjoying Cardiff's culinary specialties, spend your time exploring Roath Park or taking a guided tour of the historic Cardiff Castle.

Located on New Zealand's South Island, Fiordland National Park draws travelers with its stunning yet dramatic landscapes . While the weather in the park can be unpredictable in September (a spring month in the Southern Hemisphere), Fiordland typically sees daytime temperatures that hover in the 50s. These cool but comfortable days are when Fiordland's marine life, including penguins, fur seals and dolphins, tend to be most active, so be on the lookout while cruising or kayaking through jaw-dropping Milford Sound. Also save time for hiking one of the park's three Fiordland Great Walks trails.

The capital of South Korea is especially lovely come September. Temperatures are warm in the high 70s, and hotel and airfare prices have begun to drop after the busy summer season. Plus, with smaller crowds, it will be easier to enjoy top destinations like Bukchon Hanok Village and Bukhansan National Park. Travelers who plan their getaway for the end of the month can also experience Chuseok, a three-day harvest festival known as Korean Thanksgiving.

September is one of the best times to travel to this northern Morocco city, renowned for its well-preserved architecture and vibrant culture. Not only will you avoid summer's sweltering heat, but visiting in the offseason means you won't have to worry about rubbing elbows with hordes of other tourists. Spend your visit strolling through the magnificent Medina of Fez, a must-visit UNESCO World Heritage Site, and remember to set aside time for a peaceful walk through the Jardin Jnan Sbil public gardens.  

This mountainous area of western Massachusetts offers a mix of outdoor activities and must-see cultural attractions. September brings crisp fall weather to the Berkshires (think: average temperatures in the high 60s) that is perfect for touring the grounds of the region's museums and historical sites. Plus, the pleasant temps make it possible to comfortably hike Mount Greylock or Monument Mountain's trails, which offer an up-close look at the beautiful fall foliage that starts appearing in September. A fall getaway also brings fun seasonal events like the Housatonic Heritage Walks and the Lenox Apple Squeeze.

Occupying about 90 miles of the California coast, Big Sur draws travelers with its dramatic cliffs and picturesque beaches. Visit in September to take advantage of the warm, dry weather lingering from summer without dealing with the peak season's crowds. Must-do activities here include hiking through state parks like Julia Pfeiffer Burns and Andrew Molera, snapping pics of Pfeiffer Beach's impressive rock formations and surfing at Sand Dollar Beach. September is also an ideal time for whale watching, so keep an eye out for migrating blue and humpback whales.

1. Try Jackson Boxer’s new Parisian-inspired restaurant Henri

Jackson Boxer is annoyingly handsome, talented and successful, isn’t he? Now, he’s only gone and opened a ‘glamorous and playful’, Parisian-inspired restaurant on the ground floor of the Henrietta Experimental Hotel in Covent Garden. It’s called Henri , and delivers Jackson’s unique take on Parisian classics like ‘Fried Pied de Cochon’, ‘Grilled Snails with Green Garlic’ and ‘Steak-Frites’ as a lunchtime staple. And don’t get me started on the decadent fried eggs with morels (see image). A serious 1kg Côte de Boeuf is also available to share with sides such as Duck Fat Fries; Green Beans; and Pomme Purée. Drinks-wise, you’re in expertly-jiggered hands with cocktails courtesy of the Experimental Group, known for bringing Parisian cocktail culture to London, alongside a mostly-french-focused wine list to peruse. It’s haut-brasserie-meets-gastro pub, combining enough interior wood panelling, velvet and leather that even I can’t help being grudgingly turned on by it.

10. Laugh along to Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew

Jude Christian’s version of The Taming of the Shrew at the Shakespeare’s Globe has an impressive ensemble cast who deliver lines from the classic comedy undeterred by the sound of whirring jets that fly past – it all adds to the ambience after all. Once again we see the courtship of Kate (the Shrew) and Petruchio. This headstrong Kate is unlike any other we’ve seen before, and she has a monumental moment towards the end of the show that is worth the ticket alone. Perched on stage is a giant inflatable teddy bear, which looks unlike a prop from Miley Cyrus’ garish Bangerz era. But the physical comedy (particularly Tyreke Leslie who plays Tirano), the occasional modern swear word and some magnificent audience interactions meant that even the folks who stood for over two hours until the show’s end were roaring with laughter.

See an exhibition : The Design Museum’s major new, and hotly tipped exhibition, Barbie: The Exhibition , will open to the public on the 5th of July. Curated by Danielle Thom and designed by Sam Jacob Studio, it'll show a rare first edition Barbie which was released in 1959, along with 250 other objects, showcasing the 65-year evolution of the world’s most famous doll and her response to cultural shifts.

What to See on London Stages This Summer

British theater recommendations for visitors and residents of all ages — and inclinations.

London’s theaters offer something for everyone. Whether in big West End venues or on stages tucked away above a pub, the city’s shows include the classics, new plays and some productions that defy classification. Open air playhouses attract audiences willing to brave the unpredictable summer weather, and venues spread throughout the city make for an accessible theater landscape that extends far beyond the heavily trafficked tourist hot spots.

Whether you’re looking for frothy musicals or fiercely charged political writing, chances are your wishes can be answered somewhere around town. Below, in seven categories, are some of the shows vying for the attention of visitors and residents seeking out London theater this summer.

Give Me Serious Drama

Few London playhouses generate as much buzz as the Almeida, and expectations are high for its run of this new play from the Australian playwright Kendall Feaver, whose theatrical debut, “The Almighty Sometimes,” impressed British critics when it played in Manchester, England, in 2018 . Feaver’s latest is set on a university campus rocked by sexual assault allegations, and Polly Findlay directs a cast led by Phoebe Campbell and Justine Mitchell . Through July 20 at the Almeida Theater.

The Boys from the Blackstuff

The regional accents may prove a challenge — especially if English isn’t your first language — but there’s no denying the passion and power that course through James Graham’s stage adaptation of this era-defining 1982 British TV show. Through a community of Liverpool road builders’ struggles, Kate Wasserberg’s empathic production reminds us that employment is crucial to self-esteem. Through Aug. 3 at the Garrick Theater.

My Father’s Fable

The Bush Theater in West London might seem off the beaten path, but it’s where the stage version of “Baby Reindeer” had its London run , before Netflix’s runaway hit adaptation brought it to TV screens all over the world earlier this year. The Bush’s current offering is the debut play from the British Nigerian actress Faith Omole, who was a 2023 nominee for London’s equivalent to the Tonys, the Olivier Awards. “My Father’s Fable” follows a character named Peace, who discovers a brother she didn’t know she had; Rakie Ayola stars and Rebekah Murrell directs. Through July 27 at the Bush Theater.

People Places and Things

Duncan Macmillan’s take-no-prisoners account of addiction and recovery — with snippets of Chekhov’s “The Seagull” thrown in — won awards aplenty in London nearly a decade ago for its leading lady Denise Gough, who then brought the show to New York in 2017 . Here it is again, with Gough in fearless form once more as the angsty, anguished Emma, and a supporting cast led by Gough’s fellow Irishwoman Sinead Cusack. Through Aug. 10 at the Trafalgar Theater.

Buying tickets

The box office is often the best port of call, if you want to avoid online fees or get “rush” seats that are sometimes available shortly before curtain up. Various websites, including whatsonstage.com, sell tickets alongside reviews and features.

Reusable Sippy Cups may be the norm on Broadway, but they are rare outside the United States. “Interval drinks,” as intermission beverages are known in Britain, are often served in actual glasses that can sometimes be taken into the auditorium and which can be ordered before the performance to avoid a crush at the bar in the break.

The pleasures of a free Playbill don’t exist in London, where programs — not Playbills, which is an American brand — must be purchased. Some theaters have gone paperless and make program information available only by scanning a QR code or looking online.

Refunds and exchanges

These policies vary venue to venue, and sometimes show to show. Some theaters will issue a credit that can be used for other productions under the same roof, but London is stricter than New York about offering money back if a star is absent.

Show Me the Classics

Richard iii.

This production at Shakespeare’s Globe — a reconstruction of the 16th-century theater where many of the Bard’s plays were first performed — has been a talking-point in London’s theater world after disability activists objected to the theater’s artistic director, Michelle Terry, taking the title role, because she is not disabled (and Terry performs the role without its typical hunch). That brought some renewed attention to a venue that has always been popular with visitors, where you can stand in an arena under an open sky, as Jacobean theatergoers did, or opt for seats around the side. Through Aug. 3 at Shakespeare’s Globe.

Suite in Three Keys

Noël Coward is a London favorite and his “Private Lives” received two major revivals here in 2023 alone. Now, the director Tom Littler is turning the attention of the Orange Tree Theater toward three lesser-known Coward plays from 1965, all set in the same Swiss hotel suite and all dealing with relationships on the rocks. A View from the Bridge

Each decade seems to offer up a defining London production of Arthur Miller’s 1950s tragedy. This go-round finds the small-screen star Dominic West (“The Wire,” “The Affair”) returning to his theatrical roots to play Eddie Carbone, the Brooklyn longshoreman with a guilty secret. The protean Kate Fleetwood plays his wife, Beatrice, who learns far more about her husband than she ever expected. Through Aug. 3 at Theater Royal, Haymarket.

The Grapes of Wrath

Frank Galati’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s enduring novel played the National Theater in 1989 on the way to a Tony-winning Broadway run. Now, it’s back in a new production that underscores the timeless importance of the Joad family’s Depression-era travails on the largest of the National’s three stages. Expect large-scale emotion in a big theater, not least with the mighty Cherry Jones, a two-time Tony winner, heading the cast. Runs July 17 to Sept. 14 at the National Theater.

I Want to See Stars

It’s been a dozen years since James Corden took the play “ One Man, Two Guvnors ” to Broadway; he went on to win a Tony and launch a successful career in the United States as a late-night talk show host. This summer, he’s back on the London stage for the first time since then, leading the cast for a new play by Joe Penhall set in the world of British politics, a timely production given Britain votes this summer in a general election. Matthew Warchus, who runs the Old Vic, directs. Through Aug. 10 at the Old Vic.

Hello, Dolly!

Leading lady Imelda Staunton has shown a career-long interest in the American repertory, from Edward Albee to Stephen Sondheim. This summer, she lends her powerful singing voice to to a revival of the Jerry Herman Broadway favorite, here directed by Dominic Cooke, who also worked with Staunton on an acclaimed revival of Sondheim’s “Follies.” Her character, the matchmaking Dolly Gallagher Levi is a funnier, frothier one than Staunton often plays, so look for smiles both onstage and in the audience; Andy Nyman and Jenna Russell co-star. Runs July 6 to Sept. 14 at the London Palladium.

Romeo and Juliet

The last time Tom Holland was on a West End stage, he was a prepubescent member of the company in “Billy Elliot the Musical.” The 28-year-old “Spiderman” star has now graduated to the big league with his Shakespeare debut in “Romeo and Juliet”: a heavily cut, stripped-back version that bears the stark signature of its director, Jamie Lloyd . With Holland’s name attached, the show sold out in just hours, even before Juliet had been cast (she’s played by Francesca Amewudah-Rivers), but last-minute box office visitors have been known to snap up returned tickets. Through Aug. 3 at the Duke of York’s Theater.

Kit Harington may have come to worldwide attention as Jon Snow on “Game of Thrones,” but the actor returns regularly to his theatrical roots. And despite his star power, he’ll be getting alphabetical billing in the West End premiere of the Jeremy O. Harris drama “Slave Play,” which made headlines in New York for its bold depiction of race, sex and power in the American South. The London cast includes alumni from the New York cast, such as James Cusati-Moyer and Chalia La Tour; Robert O’Hara directs again. Runs June 29 to Sept. 21 at the No ë l Coward Theater.

I’m Looking for a Laugh

Fawlty towers: the play.

The BBC only made 12 episodes of this TV show in the 1970s, but that was enough to secure Basil Fawlty and his wife Sybil spots in the canon of British comedy, along with the employees and guests of their seaside hotel. A dashing Adam Jackson-Smith is the spitting image of John Cleese as the easily flustered Basil, and Anna-Jane Casey, sporting surely the heaviest wig on the West End, steps ably into Prunella Scales’s shoes as his sly and snarky wife. Through Jan. 4, 2025, at the Apollo Theater.

The Play That Goes Wrong

It’s nearly 10 years since the West End opening of this Mischief Theater company production about an amateur theatrical troupe attempting — not very successfully — to stage a 1920s murder mystery. After many cast changes and a heap of international acclaim, Mark Bell’s staging continues to offer up both mayhem and mirth, not to mention a Tony Award-winning set from Nigel Hook that collapses on cue in each performance. At the Duchess Theater.

The 39 Steps

This frothy stage version of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 spy thriller ran for nine years on the West End, won a 2007 Olivier Award for best comedy and toured to 39 countries. Its late-summer London return will surely beguile audiences anew. Tom Byrne, who played Prince Andrew in “The Crown,” is the star this time around, supported by three multitasking colleagues who take on a dizzying array of roles. Runs Aug. 16 to Sept. 28 at the Trafalgar Theater.

I Love Musicals

The baker’s wife.

A busy summer for American musicals in London includes a rare outing for of “The Baker’s Wife,” a portrait of French provincial life in the 1930s from the book writer Joseph Stein (“Fiddler On the Roof”), and the composer Stephen Schwartz, whose subsequent monster hit, “Wicked ,” is soon to be a two-part film. This latest production of “The Baker’s Wife” is in the hands of the American director Gordon Greenberg, whose Huey Lewis musical “The Heart of Rock and Roll” just closed on Broadway ; Clive Rowe (“Carousel”) and Lucie Jones (“Waitress”) play the middle-aged baker and his beautiful young wife. Runs July 6 to Sept. 14 at the Menier Chocolate Factory.

Guys and Dolls

Frank Loesser’s gorgeous 1950 musical chronicling two love affairs is especially adored in London, where it seems to get revived every few years. But Nicholas Hytner’s acclaimed production for the Bridge Theater is the first time this show has been presented as an immersive experience. You can watch the performance on foot, following the cast from one shifting location to another, or you can sit and watch the action from the above. Whatever you choose, you’ll thrill anew at Arlene Phillips’s high-kicking choreography and a cast whose affection for the immortal score is palpable from the first note. Through Jan. 4, 2025, at the Bridge Theater.

Kiss Me, Kate

The Barbican Theater, once home to the Royal Shakespeare Company, gives itself over every summer to a production of an American musical. This year it’s Cole Porter’s feisty 1948 backstage musical “Kiss Me, Kate,” about two warring lovers putting on “The Taming of the Shrew. ” The American director Bartlett Sher is at the helm of an international cast headed by the expert Stephanie J. Block, on loan from Broadway, in the dual roles of Lilli Vanessi and Shakespeare’s Katharine; the Irish actor Adrian Dunbar (“Line of Duty”) makes his mainstream musical theater debut playing Fred Graham and Petruchio. Through Sept. 14 at the Barbican Theater.

High school can be an unforgiving place, as we are reminded by this stage musical version of the popular 2004 film. Six years after its Broadway run led to 12 Tony nominations, “Mean Girls” has reached the West End, directed, as in New York, by Casey Nicholaw. Charlie Burn plays the wayward class newbie, Cady, who finds herself confronting Georgina Castle’s Regina, the meanest of the girls in her midst. At the Savoy Theater.

My Kids Want to Come, Too

This adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s 1999 children’s book reached the stage in 2001, courtesy of the Tall Stories theater company. Here’s a chance to revisit the tale of the hungry mouse whose quest for hazelnuts brings him into contact with the titular forbidding buffalo-like creature. The show is being performed during the day in the same West End theater where the more adult musical “ Hadestown ” runs in the evening. Runs July 17 to Sept. 8 at the Lyric Theater.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

J.K. Rowling’s Hogwarts saga was a benchmark achievement in children’s literature long before the stage version pushed the narrative forward to encompass Harry and his school friends’ adult lives. On Broadway, the director John Tiffany’s ceaselessly imaginative two-part production has been compressed into one play; New York visitors wanting to see the more capacious original can still do so on the West End, where the eye-popping production celebrates its eighth birthday on July 30. At the Palace Theater.

The Secret Garden

Frances Hodgson Burnett’s tale of 10-year-old Mary Lennox, dispatched from India to northern England to live with an uncle she doesn’t know, has been refashioned many times and reaches the stage anew this summer, alfresco in Regent’s Park. (Check the weather forecast before heading out.) Puppets have been added to the mix in this version, directed by Anna Himali Howard. Through July 20 at the Open Air Theater, Regent’s Park.

There’s something rather sweet about watching girls dressed as Anna or Elsa heading into the West End production of “Frozen ,” which is now the Disney musical’s flagship production since the Broadway version shut down in 2020 . Families have just a few more months to check out the director Michael Grandage’s lavish reappraisal of the hit film — that icescape! — with Laura Dawkes and Samantha Barks as the two sisters who let their voices go. Through Sept. 8 at Theater Royal, Drury Lane.

Tweedy’s Massive Circus

Circuses don’t usually think small, but that’s the case with this ironically named show from Tweedy the Clown, in which the big top has shrunken in size. Tweedy, a baggy-trousered Scot, has long been a mainstay of the touring Giffords Circus in England; this time, he’s in the company of three colleagues, one of whom (Sam Goodburn) joins Tweedy in a tightrope walk without a wire. Runs July 18 to 27 at the Underbelly Festival, Cavendish Square.

I Like the Weird

The Argentine company Fuerza Bruta’s high-octane mixture of physical theater, music and movement has been seen around the world, and now the company is returning to London with “AVEN,” a show that promises more of their trademark, take-no-prisoners energy. The production, which premiered in Buenos Aires, promises to have the vibrancy of a rave . Runs July 9 to Sept. 1 at the Roundhouse.

Interview with the Vamp

Richard Thomas was a backstage figure for the scabrous musical “Jerry Springer: the Opera,” which he created over 20 years ago with Stewart Lee. This time, Thomas will be onstage, alongside cabaret mainstay Dr. Adam Perchard, in a short but scintillating-sounding run of a shows billed as an “epic queer song cycle”— and why not? Runs July 10 to 13 at the Soho Theater.

Viola’s Room

There are no masks required in this 45-minute offering from Punchdrunk, the British company behind such vaunted immersive experiences as “The Burnt City” and “Sleep No More.” And rather than splitting the audience up into small groups, as is the Punchdrunk norm, spectators will come together and walk barefoot through a labyrinth while listening on headsets as the whispery voice of Helena Bonham Carter tells a spooky tale drawn from a gothic 1901 short story, “The Moon-Slave.” Through Aug. 18 at One Cartridge Place .
