Maybe think again for Van Insurance

Gave 2 stars because I did actually get a half decent price initially. But here's the rub - insurers are no longer allowed to raise prices for existing policy holders, but RAC wanted to charge me an extra £200. They seem to be able to do this because they are simply a broker and claimed that the insurer underwriting my policy didn't want to give renewal quote. So they transferred me to another insurer that charged £200 more. Unsure if this is legal. In short, there is no now reason to use RAC as a broker. Just go straight to the insurer. What's more, couldn't get through on the phones. You are heavily encouraged to use live chat. During the live chat, I felt like the support agent couldn't hang up fast enough. And their account portal and automated reply services need serious maintenance. Surprisingly unprofessional. All a bit of a shame really, from such a brand I previously deemed would be much better.

Unable to opt out of Auto Renew

Doubled the home insurance price and the online system wouldnt allow you to opt out forcing a too long phone call to the RAC. Bloody nuisance process, just sort your system out and stop being greedy!! Policy HE29373**** Ageas

Disgrace as they left a disabled person…

Disgrace as they left a disabled person over 4 hours after they had an accident that did not involve another car. Over 25 calls to get the car recovered even when disabled driver had to get home to administrate medication to disabled family member. It was only the threat of going to the Financial Ombudsman before they transferred us to the underwriter and they arranged recovery. RAC Group CEO will be receiving a complaint. Buyers beware.

Please beware of the portal on Rac…

Please beware of the portal on Rac insurance, My daughter's policy had an end date of 13/6/2024 so went on to renew after having a quote by post, but nowhere to pay online. so go on chat the following morning they can't help but need to call, on hold for 32 minutes get to speak to someone and evidently by their admission the dates are misleading, asked to speak to a manager and at minute 47 got cut off. It seems that I need to pay them £150 more to renew now as their dates are misleading. you can guess I am going elsewhere.

Profiteering - "the act of taking advantage of a situation in order to make a profit, usually by charging high prices for things people need". I have never known a business embody this so well. My daughter has recently looked to change her car in month 11 of annual premium. The cost to change (+ that months insurance) was over £250.00! when ultimately looking to move to a car with a lower premium for a period of around 4weeks. We will never use RAC again for any services.

Even one star is too much for this…

Even one star is too much for this company! Got a quote online on a comparison website. Went ahead and purchased the insurance. When the confirmation came through, I noticed it covered for fewer miles than I might to. So I wanted to amend this. I had to wait till the following morning to get anywhere on their live chat - no phone number!! Live chat said I’d be online in 3 minutes - it took 15. I realised at this point I had no wish to have an insurance policy with a company that were this difficult to communicate with. So -when I finally got a live chat convo going, I said I wished to cancel the policy. It wasn’t even due to start until 26th June. Was told £25 would be deducted from the refund. Absolutely unacceptable. I thought you had a 14 ‘cooling off’ period with online sales. Apparently not according to them. I could understand if the policy had started and I’d changed my mind - but not with 11 days before it’s even due to start. I’m absolutely disgusted at this blatant profiteering. And shocked that the RAC should put their name to such shoddy dealings . I think it’s pretty indicative of the it scant regard for customer service the fact nobody from RAC Insurance online has bothered to respond to the many bad reviews on this site….

Awful. My renewal is due in 2 weeks. They quoted me 10x. I am fully paid up until end of policy so cancelled my direct debit as I am not renewing. Got a letter today from CEO saying my policy has been cancelled early and there is a cancellation charge! Never again, such an terrible company

Bloody useless

Bloody useless. After 10 minutes of going round in circles on the automated phone line I was sent to the wrong department, they then forwarded me to another automated phone line that ignored my inputs and then hung up on me.

Disgusting company

At the start, it was great was offered a brilliant quote as a first time driver June 2023. It came to me changing my car 2 months before renewal and to get my first year no claims. They refused to change my car over. First they quoted £400 to change my car and then they went back and said it would cost me £4,500 for a 1L engine annually to renew and still was not letting me change my car over just for the duration of the 2 months left of my policy. Had to cancel my policy which cost £130 and lost my no claims. I recommend you don’t fall for their trap, they will always try to get money from you. On top of that, i am still getting frequent emails and messages to plug my black box back in after numerous phone calls advising them that my policy is cancelled and i am not a client of theirs anymore.

They are worst company

They are worst company, first they didn’t change the car to imported car and then I changed they last month insurance to the other car which already insured and said just cancel after completing yearly policy and give me my NCD… I was out country they start the new policy without asking 31/05/2024.. when I came back after holidays I phoned them on Monday they because 1st and 2nd June was Saturday and Sunday. Monday I phoned they are telling me the long procedure via DVLA…. And asking the cancellation fee… It is insane never happened before when you tell them u bought the insurance they maximum ask send the prove and cancel the insurance…. Here no email considerings for tell that car already insured from different company since March 2024.. staff are really rude and nonprofessional…

Called to discuss a fault with the…

Called to discuss a fault with the website not allowing me to select the correct number of no claims discount before my policy had even begun with them they increased my price by almost £100 and then said if i wanted to change my mind about starting the cover it would cost me £25 to cancel (before my policy had even begun) Poor customer experience and I had left my previous insurer of 8 years. will not be renewing when this first year is over.

Absolutely don't recommend !

Absolutely don't recommend ! Band of amateurs!! They are making hard to optout of autoreneval of your policy. Making problems to send you NCB on the end. Never again this rubbish company for any insurance ever.

My policy was automatically renewed…

My policy was automatically renewed which I did not request. No reminder letter, no email in advance. The first I knew was they sent me an email saying the policy was renewed and the money had already been debited. Naturally, the renewal price was very high so I called and cancelled immediately, they charged me £25 and will take 5 days to send a refund. To be fair they answered the phone fairly quickly and the operator was helpful. Will never use again.

Utterly useless

Utterly useless. Impossible to contact them. All I wanted to do was renew a policy which had expired the day before. Could not do it online as it would not accept my data. Tried telephoning them but sorry 'we are experiencing long wait times" you can talk to our robot if you want. No thanks Goodbye. Avoid at all costs.

Been insured with them for 5/6 years. Renewal this year around £150 more but stayed with them. Decided to change my job so updated them I was now employed instead of self employed but the same work.. To be told it was a £25 fee and that my premium had gone up by £366.50. So they wanted me to pay £391.50 for changing employment for 6 months left on my policy. They then have me the option to pay it or cancel my policy. They gave me 7 days to pay or leave or they will cancel my policy. It's shocking!!! I would never go with them again and would not recommend!!

what an utter shower of complete S...

what an utter shower of complete S.... a total waste of time, this business is a total shambles and a complete embarrassment to the RAC brand. the online systems do not work, there is no available contact with anyone and the main sales line even has a recorded message that says the phone line is no longer available and hangs up on you. i am sure there are some deep pockets behind this business, but it uses the RAC name, has a pretty front end, but zero behind it that can back anything up. do yourself a favour and avoid at all costs.

Annoying pick pockets!!!

Thieves!!! I cancelled my auto renewal before the renewal, but they still renewed and took the money. This was their error but instead of simply fixing it, they tagged me along for a month with phone calls and email exchanges and then asked me to cancel it via their live chat on their website. I did in the end and they have finally enacted the refund but what a turmoil to cancel a policy that I had already cancelled! What part of "I don't want this policy" did you not understand RAC?!

Quote valid for 12 days, but not honoured

Received a quote via moneysupermarket that was valid for 12 days. Checked with 6 days left, all quotes were still the same both on moneysupermarket and the RAC site. With 3 days left went to take out the insurance. On their own website the quote had increased £19, On MoneySupermarket the quote (that still stated 3 days left and with all the extras added as before) had increased £129. In a way I'm glad it happened as I then checked the Trustpilot reviews. Needless to say I went elsewhere.

We have just taken out car insurance for my parents - and I wanted to speak to someone due to queries I had due to my dad having Parkinson's Disease and looking online - it is a minefield! We could not speak to an advisor at their current insurer and so ..... we obtained a quote online via a comparison website and RAC came up whom we know to be reputable and I therefore telephoned RAC as we had some queries - I spoke with Olu who explained things clearly and was very understanding. Massive shout out to you Olu and I really cannot recommend RAC enough, thanks to Olu!

Insurance renewal quote is over 80%…

Insurance renewal quote is over 80% higher than last year with no claims. I have achieved an almost identical price to last year going direct with Aviva (who underwrite RAC) Essentially RAC are re-sellers who whack a massive commission on. Trying to communicate with them is made as difficult as possible too - avoid this company, there are better ones out there

Cancelling your policy

Please tell us immediately if your policy does not meet your requirements. If you cancel within 14 days of the receipt of your documentation and you have not made a trip or a claim we will give you a full refund. Following this 14 day period, you continue to have the right to cancel your policy at any time by contacting us.

If the notice of cancellation is received outside the 14 day cooling-off period no premium will be refunded, however discretion may be exercised in some circumstances such as bereavement or a change to the policy resulting in us being unable to to cover your medical conditions.

Should you wish to make any amendments to your cover please contact us via our Live chat Team. Our Live chat opening hours are Monday to Friday 09:00 – 17:00.

We may cancel your policy by giving you 14 days notice. If this happens we will refund the premium you have paid for the rest of the insurance period.

Please note once your policy has been cancelled your cover will end and you will not be able to make a claim.

You can claim online for your storm damaged fence 24/7. Once you’ve lodged a claim and we’ve approved it, we’ll arrange settlement so you can organise a repair or replacement. You’ll need to discuss repair or replacement options with your neighbour if you share a fence with them.

Make a claim

An excess is the amount you’re required to pay when you make a claim. This is the amount you agreed to when you purchased your policy. It can be found by viewing your policy online , on your schedule or Premium Excess and Discount (PED) Guide .

Depending on your circumstances, you may need to pay more than one type of excess. We’ll tell you if any other excess applies based on your individual risk details and claim scenario.

If you have comprehensive car insurance, just make your claim online 24/7 or call us on 13 17 03, and we will arrange for one of our glaziers to repair or replace the damaged glass.

If our glazier can repair the damage, your claim can be processed without an excess. If the damaged window glass needs to be replaced, a $100 windscreen excess may apply.

Guastavino said that you can leverage Chat GPT by asking it to recommend the tools that will help you find better deals. She said that questions like the following examples should help you jumpstart your research:

  • Which websites are renowned for offering affordable rental cars?
  • What are some recommended apps for finding better travel deals?
  • How can I negotiate a better deal with my travel insurance?
  • Which tool can I use to track flight prices?

Ask It To Recommend Lesser-Known or Cheaper Destinations

“Chat GPT can assist you in determining the ideal time to travel and the best destinations for securing great travel deals,” Guastavino continued. “For instance, you can ask questions, such as these, in order discover lesser-known places that are not overrun by tourists (and tourist prices to match):

  • When does the shoulder or off-season occur in specific locations?
  • What are some hidden gems to explore in particular countries or states?”

Ask It To Help You Negotiate a Lower AirBnb Price

Travel and AI Expert, Justin Albertynas, CEO of Ratepunk , said, “One way we plan to use ChatGPT for our booking comparison service is by letting it negotiate prices for an AirBnb with the host. You will only need to input what price you want, and a ChatGPT plugin will generate an entire message to the host and start negotiating on your behalf. No one has done this yet.”

In the meantime, you could ask ChatGPT to generate a message to the host of the Airbnb you are interested in, and input something like the following: “Write a letter to an AirBnb host named Mr. Smith. I want to negotiate the daily price from $275 to $250.”

Once you receive the output, you can edit it and personalize it further before sending it to the host through the Airbnb platform. Or you could choose to add more detail to your initial request so that ChatGPT can use it to craft a more personalized letter.

Ask It About Travel Scams Specific To Your Destination

Albertynas also said you can ask ChatGPT about common travel scams relative to the country you’re flying to as a way to avoid getting swindled by the locals.

“This not only saves money but provides security,” he said. 

Ask It for Suggestions of Top Options or Best Overall Value

Philip Ballard, the chief communications officer and head of investor relations at HotelPlanner , had these suggestions for saving on various travel expenses as a result of his own research with ChatGPT.

Travel Insurance

“ChatGPT will not generate real-time recommendations on travel insurance yet,” Ballard said, “but if you ask for suggestions for top options, it suggested Allianz Global Assistance, World Nomads, and Travel Guard.”

Rather than sift through tons of travel insurance providers, you could take that information and do some comparison shopping to find the best deal. 

Hotel Prices

“ChatGPT is not yet able to generate deals for future hotel stays,” advised Ballard. “You’re still better off using an online travel agency site, such as Expedia, Booking, or HotelPlanner. However, you can ask it questions like, ‘What hotel in New York City offers the best overall value?’ Answer was Marriot Marquis. You can ask that question for any city.”

Ballard noted that his company is curious about how ChatGPT determines “value” and suspects it includes star level, location, price per available room, historical supply and demand and possibly historical customer reviews.

Rental Car Deals

Ballard said he asked, “What car rental service is the cheapest historically in 2021?” and ChatGPT responded with Budget Car Rental. “So that is still helpful even though it’s not current deals,” he said. 

“But when I asked, ‘What car rental service is considered the best for deals?’, it responded with ‘Enterprise Rent-A-Car is considered the best car rental service for deals.'” Ballard said this response is clearly based on historical data. 

However, it might still be helpful. For example, you could take this information and compare rental car prices between Budget and Enterprise to find the best deal. 

What Are the Limitations of Using ChatGPT To Help You Save Money on Travel Expenses?

Ballard pointed out that the biggest limitation is that you cannot use ChatGPT for real-time or future travel deals yet. 

“Once a future version is released that does have real-time data, we believe that more travelers will start using the tool to find deals,” he said. “We’re not quite there yet as an industry, but we could be by the end of the year. That’s how fast companies are trying to be first to market with the latest Generative AI tool or feature. 

“The second limitation is that there is no guarantee that the information you ask it is 100% accurate or unbiased, but it’s a good starting point for further research or to generate some ideas and recommendations or summaries of complex topics. 

“The third limitation is a function of the prompts and inputs themselves. You still have to feed it good inputs to generate a useful response. A year from now, Generative AI tools will be more widely-used by travelers and hopefully real-time accessible. That will be another AI game changer for our industry. Stay tuned and try to keep up!”

Road trips aren't immune to disruptions, and road trip insurance works similarly to travel insurance . Most plans require purchase before your trip begins and cover your prepaid expenses.

For rental cars

Not all third-party travel insurance policies automatically include coverage for a rental vehicle. Seek out plans that provide rental car insurance specifically — or book your car with a credit card that offers these specific protections .

Rental car travel insurance policies generally protect against damage to the rental vehicle only. Causes not within your control, such as collision, theft, vandalism, windstorm, fire, hail or flood damage are typically covered.

Because of the limited scope of rental car insurance, know that you may be on the hook if you’re liable for damage to other vehicles or if there’s bodily injury.

When picking up your rental car, you will likely be offered the insurance sold by the rental car company at the counter, typically called a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) or Loss Damage Waiver (LDW). You can decline this protection if you have sufficient coverage elsewhere (e.g., via a third-party policy or a credit card).

For your personal vehicle

Getting road trip insurance for your own vehicle isn't as common as travel insurance for rental cars , but it can still be a valuable consideration depending on your situation. Finally, road tripping doesn’t end at driving a car. Other trip protections you may consider including in a travel insurance policy include medical evacuation, trip cancellation insurance, trip interruption coverage and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance . This is true whether you opt to drive your own vehicle or rent one for your trip.

USI Affinity’s Diamond plan rang in at $187, just a little more than HTH Worldwide’s plan. While it includes rental car insurance, the limit is quite low, making this a better option for those who are driving their own vehicles.
