Guide For Living And Traveling to Antigua Guatemala

Things to Do in Guatemala: Visit a Safari Park, AutoSafari Chapin

AutoSafari Chapin - Guatemalan Safari (32)

If you’ve been around this site for a while, you know how much I *absolutely* love and try to inspire you to think of and see travel differently.  Sure, a vacation is a beautiful thing, but…

My past trips to Guatemala had been your garden-variety-type vacations.  By that I mean I was:

a)  Rushing around from tourist attraction to tourist attraction to “see it all.”

b)  Spending money like a drunken sailor to “get the full experience,” aka “ the prepackaged touristy stuff .”

These experiences have taught me something important:

The one who spends the most money

doesn’t necessarily have the best travel experience.

It turns out when you run from attraction to attraction, you might miss all the cool stuff in-between.  Such as a freaking awesome safari experience in the middle of Central America!

I’d read in passing about AutoSafari Chapin before, though I had never had the time nor the desire to go during my earlier short stays here.  Now that I’m slow-traveling through Guatemala, I’ve had time to check out the lesser-known/visited attractions.

This one blew me away because I wasn’t expecting to enjoy myself there as much as I did.

AutoSafari, in short, was the brainchild of two men who thought to build a natural reserve in the middle of nowhere and laid it out as a driveable, safari-like experience.  I have to say they succeeded tremendously.

Heading out on the road to Taxisco, off of CA-9 (the road that leads to the Pacific Coast), you’ll find a few well-placed signs advising you how long until you arrive at the park’s entrance.  This entrance is well-marked with the huge sign you see below.

Entrance sign for AutoSafari Chapin

Entrance sign for AutoSafari Chapin

AutoSafari is open every day, except Mondays, from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  You get the option to drive yourself or be driven around in their minivan for a guided tour.

Whatever option you take, your entrance fee entitles you to another go-around late in the afternoon.

Macaws will greet you at the door.

So close you can touch them – don’t!

Something that I’ve noticed here is that parks don’t gouge you when it comes to food and drinks.  They acknowledge they are the only vendor in the park and seem not to use the opportunity to squeeze you for every last cent.

Who knew that building an attraction that was both enjoyable AND affordable could be a sound business strategy?

AutoSafari Chapin - Guatemalan Safari (59)

Visit restrooms at the entrance – a good idea

Entry fees are pretty affordable. Tickets for adults are Q60, for children 2-10 years old Q50, free for anyone under two. You can also prepay for food, which I highly recommend.

For only Q30 extra for adults and Q35 for children, you get a ticket for a meal combo (burger, fries and a drink).  Pony up Q55 and you get a huge Churrasco and potatoes meal.

The burgers were surprisingly humongous too, and one burger is enough to feed two starving children, as I found out.

At the ticket booth, you’ll get a map of showing you the layout of the park.  The park is divided into sections and numbered gates separate them. It’s not necessary, as the road that goes through the park does not have any turn-offs.

With tickets in hand, we went towards section #1.  A park attendant checked to made sure we had bought tickets.  Once cleared, the massive wooden doors were opened, and we were off!

Immediately we were awestruck when we realized we’d be not just close to the animals, but right next to them.  We slowly inched forward while zebras leisurely moved off the road.

You’re allowed to have the windows rolled down, except when moving into the section housing the lions.  I was so close to the zebras I could almost touch them if I stuck my arm out of the car.

I believe the animals below were yaks.  For the most part, my experience was that the animals regarded us with as much curiosity as we did them.

Another treat was the Hippo section.

Hippo section was a favorite of ours

As we drove up, a hippo eyed us from the water and decided to put on a show.

The hippo slowly made its way out of the water, walked across the road, literally 3 feet in front of the car, and just stared at us for a bit.

Once it got bored of us, it turned around and just waded into the water for another swim.

There were a few different species of goat and deer throughout the park….

Another favorite of us was the section housing giraffes, which seemed to be curious about every car that passed by.

I’m sure the kid below got a memory of a lifetime, as he peeked at a giraffe while sticking his head out of the car’s sunroof.

How. Cool. Is. That?

The giraffe above headed to the shade under the canopy.  We thought we’d have to be content to watch them from a distance…

The giraffe slowly made its way around, and I managed to get a quick shot off as it checked us out from behind.

Eventually, it walked away after it got bored with us.  The kids just sat in the car with mouths wide open.

Heading into the section that housed the lions, all signs advised us to roll up the windows. Sunroof-kid wisely ducked inside the car again.

Just in case, a guard watched from a tower high up, in case anybody got crazy enough to get out of the car and pet the lion.

Halfway through, there’s a section where people can pull over, use the restrooms, and get some refreshments.  It also had a nice observation tower overlooking the giraffes’ section.

I liked the open-area setup.  The animals had plenty of room to roam, and they all seemed to be cared for well.

At the end of the driving trail, one arrives at the other section of the park, which contains the restaurant, pool, another zoo (traditional kind) and an artificial lake.

We parked and headed straight for the restaurant to eat.  The installations were huge and pretty clean.  The menu has your standard park fare and beer on tap.

Two pools, an adult-sized one, and a kiddie one were a welcome relief since it was very hot, as it tends to be in this part of Guatemala.

We went pretty early, which explains why there are barely any other people in the pics. The pool area filled up later when the latecomers began streaming in after 1:00 p.m.

After spending a few hours at the park, we were pooped.  We had no energy to make use of that second go-round pass.

I’d say that this park was one of the highlights of my trip, a real feat considering I’ve been to some amazing places already.

And I totally would’ve missed it again had I not been exploring Guatemala slowly, at my own pace, instead of frantically trying to have an excellent vacation.

What are some off-the-beaten path places you love,

even though they’re not huge tourist’ attractions?

This looks like such an amazing experience! I want to check it out if I ever make to Guatemala! Off the beaten path places are very fun to find, it’s so wonderful that you created this ability to travel slowly and discover them.

It is a wonderful place. Well worth the visit :)

And I’m working hard behind the scenes to make slow travel a reality for other people.

Excellent site you’ve got here. I honestly appreciate people like you! Take care!

Woah! I’m really loving the template/theme of this blog. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s difficult to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and visual appearance. I must say you have done a amazing job with this. Additionally, the blog loads super fast for me on Chrome. Exceptional Blog!

Autosafari Chapín

The Pacific Slope

About 25km southeast of Escuintla, Autosafari Chapín is a drive-through safari park and animal conservation project. Species native to Guatemala include white-tailed deer, tapir and macaws. Around the grounds also roam non-native species such as lions, hippos and leopards. There is a restaurant and pool, and it makes a good day out if you're traveling with kids.

It's more fun if you have your own vehicle, but if not, a 20-minute cruise through the park in a minibus is included in the admission price. Various companies run buses here (Q20, 1½ hours) from the Centra Sur terminal in Guatemala City. They leave every 10 minutes, from 4:30am to 5:30pm.

Yo Amo Escuintla

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGNq3ql7uoQ?rel=0]

How To Automatically Translate A Website In Safari

Are you trying to navigate the web in a foreign language? Thankfully, Safari now has a feature that lets you automatically translate webpages into your preferred language. This makes it easier to browse and understand websites in diffrent languages without the need for any third-party software or extensions. In this blog post, we’ll discuss how to use Safari to automatically translate webpages and why this is such a useful tool.

Let’s start by discussing how to automatically translate a webpage in Safari. First, open Safari on your device and navigate to the webpage you’d like to translate. Once the page is loaded, tap the ‘aA’ icon in the top left corner of your screen which will bring up a menu of options. From here, select the language you would like to translate it into and tap ‘Enable Translation.’

Once enabled, Safari will detect if it can automatically translate any foreign webpages you visit based on your Preferred Languages list. When visiting a website in a different language, Safari will offer you an option at the top of the page that says “Translate Page” with an arrow pointing downwards next to it. Tap this button and select the language you would like it translated into from the drop-down menu.

The benefits of using Safari’s automatic translation feature are numerous: it saves time, makes navigating websites much easier, and eliminates any potential language barriers that might otherwise exist. Additionally, no third-party software or extensions are required as all of this is already built directly into Safari itself!

In conclusion, usng Safari’s automatic translation feature is an easy way to quickly and accurately translate webpages into your preferred language without needing any additional software or extensions. We hope this guide was helpful for understanding how to use this convenient tool!

How To Automatically Translate A Website In Safari 1

Making Safari Automatically Translate

To make Safari automatically translate web pages on your iOS device, start by opening the Safari browser. Once you’re at a web page that you’d like to have translated, tap the ‘More’ button located in the bottom right corner of the screen. This will bring up a menu with options for sharing, finding, and more. Turn the switch next to Microsoft Translator to the green ‘on’ position and tap ‘Done’. From now on, whenever you open a page in Safari that needs translating, it will be automatically translated into your preferred language.

Can Safari Automatically Translate Web Pages?

Yes, Safari can automatically translate web pages! It uses your Preferred Languages list to detect foreign webpages. Once it detects a foreign language, it will display a pop-up window that allows you to choose whether or not you wuld like to have the page translated. If you choose to translate the page, the entire webpage will be translated into the language listed in your Preferred Languages list. This feature makes it easier to view and understand webpages in languages other than your native one.

Automatic Website Translation

In order to get a website to translate automatically, you need to enable the translation feature in your browser. On a computer, open your Chrome browser and click on the ‘More’ icon at the top right corner. Then select ‘Settings’ from the drop-down menu and scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on ‘Advanced’. Under the ‘Languages’ section, select ‘Language’ and then turn on the feature for ‘Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language you read.’ Now when you come across a webpage that isn’t in a language you understand, Chrome will offer to automatically translate it for you.

Enabling Auto-Translate in Safari on iPhone

To get Safari to auto translate on your iPhone, open Safari and go to a website in a language you’d like to translate. Tap the aA button at the top of the page and select the language you woud like to translate to. Then tap Enable Translation. Once this is enabled, your phone will automatically detect and translate foreign language webpages for you as you browse.

Troubleshooting Safari Translation Issues

If your Safari is not translating, it may be because the web page you are trying to view is either not in the same original language or is on a different domain. Safari automatically translates web pages based on their language and domain, and will only translate them if they remain unchanged. If either of these two conditions are not met, then Safari will not translate the page for you.

Safari’s Translate Option: Where Is It?

To find the Translate option in Safari, firt go to the web page you want to translate. Look for the Smart Search field at the top of the page. If the page can be translated, the Translate button will appear in this field. Click on this button and a drop-down menu will appear with a list of languages from which you can choose. Select your desired language and Safari will begin translating your page automatically.

Safari Extension for Translating Text

Yes! There is a great translate extension available for Safari, called Translate for Safari. This extension is just one click away, and can be used whenever you need to quickly translate entire webpages or single paragraphs. It can even translate text that you write in emails, forms or documents. With this helpful tool, you can easily access the translations you need with just a few clicks!

Does the iPhone Feature Automatic Translation?

Yes, the Translate app on iPhones has automatic translation capabilities. The app can translate text, voice, and conversations between any of the supported languages. You can even download languages to translate entrely on a device, even without an internet connection. Translation is available for most of the major languages such as English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese and many more.

Enabling Translation on an iPhone

To turn on translation on your iPhone, go to your device’s Settings app. Tap General and then tap Language & Region. Under the Languages section, select Add Language, then choose the language you want to translate from the list of available languages. Once you’ve added the language, tap Translate and make sure that Translate is set to On. Now whnever you copy text on your iPhone, you can slide your finger over Paste and translate ? [Language] and then let go to instantly translate it.

In conclusion, automatically translating a webpage on iOS 14 and later is now much easier thanks to Safari’s webpage Translation feature. All you need to do is enable the Microsoft Translator in the browser settings, and Safari will detect any foreign webpages you visit and offer to translate them automatically. To turn translation off, simply go to your Chrome settings and toggle the “Offer to translate pages that aren’t in a language you read” setting. With this feature, it’s easier than ever to quickly access information from websites all around the world.

Woah! Giraffe lifts toddler out of vehicle during drive-thru safari in Texas

G oing on a safari is arguably the ultimate travel experience. I’ve been fortunate to go on multiple safaris and I’ll never forget them. Traveling halfway around the world may not be in the cards for most Americans but fortunately, there’s a way to go on a safari in the United States without traveling all the way to Africa.

According to Google, there are 115 wildlife and safari parks in the United States. I had no idea there were that many. I would have guessed about a dozen and last year, my family and I visited what is arguably the best and most popular. Here’s my post on the San Diego Zoo Safari Park . You can get tickets here .

One safari park I didn’t know existed, and seems to be quite popular, is the 1,800-acre Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Central Texas. Fossil Rim is a not-for-profit conservation center near Glen Rose, Texas and has over 1,000 animals from 50 species.

One of the most popular attractions is the self-drive safari where visitors get to drive themselves in their own car along a path where exotic and endangered animals all roam free. Visitors are also allowed to feed the animals.

A video of an encounter with a giraffe and a toddler on June 1 is going viral and for good reason. According to KWTX , “Paisley Toten, 2, was riding in the back of a pickup truck with her mom, feeding all the animals, when one giraffe accidentally grabbed her shirt and lifted Paisley into the air. Paisley’s father, Jason Toten, recalled the moment the giraffe picked up his daughter, which was caught on video ( watch the video here ) by a car behind them. “We stopped to feed the giraffes and I turned around to look out the back window, and I saw the giraffe kind of digging around right there, and then it just grabbed her and I didn’t see her no more,” he said.”

Watch the video here .

As you can imagine, the internet is jumping all over the parents for putting their toddler in this situation. Here are just a few of the comments:

@garmenaca: Darwin Award.

@hdrangers: Riding in the back of a pickup is dangerous. Obviously, the giraffe had more sense than the adults. Please don't place CHILDREN or PETS in the bed of your truck.

@chrismawata8755: An adult giraffe is 18 to 20 feet tall. I don't think the parents realize how lucky they are that the giraffe made the drop early.

@jennapitts8373: Thank god it wasn't a Dingo! Giraffe knew that baby was in danger with those people.

However, at the time of this incident, Fossil Rim allowed visitors to ride in the bed of a truck as long as there was an adult riding in the bed. As you may have guessed, they just changed the rules. Their website now states: “Stay in your vehicle with doors closed at all times. Most Fossil Rim animals are free-roaming and may approach the vehicle. Even animals that may seem docile to you can be dangerous. For visitor safety, all tailgates, van/car doors, and hatchbacks must be closed at all times and you must be seated within the vehicle – no sitting on window ledges or on top of the vehicle. Vehicles with “soft doors,” "tube doors," or doors removed, such as Jeeps, will not be allowed to enter the park. Effective June 6th, 2024, guests are no longer permitted to ride in the bed of pickup trucks.”

Totem was interviewed by local news KWTX ( watch the video here ) and he explained how the accident happened: “Paisley was holding the bag and the giraffe went to go get the bag, not get her, but ended up getting her shirt too and picking her up.”

Thank God Paisley was fine and it was clearly an accident. I think we’ve all done some dumbs things before so I hope people cut these parents some slack.

I know I’ve had my fair share of dumb wild animal encounters, which I've since learned from. Below are pictures of just some of them:

Petting a cheetah in Africa.

Holding a tarantula in Belize.

Having a live octopus thrown on my head in French Polynesia.

Swimming with sharks in French Polynesia and Australia.

Getting kissed by a cow in Switzerland.

I was visiting from out of town and we stopped by here three time while we were here for a week. First to see what they had. This is a considerably larger store than the one we have in our town. They had basically everything a nerd could want. DND books and minis, magic cards, Pokémon, half of the store was cosplay stuff, mangas, war hammer, and other rpg and tabletop games. They had a reasonably sized play area that we could see. We intended on coming to the Friday night Magic events that they host but sadly we're unable to make it. The store was clean and the people were friendly and helpful. One of the cool features that they have is a tablet in store that you can search for cards through. You can also get the app and leisurely search at home and they will have the cards ready for pick up.

Eh. Some costumes and lingerie. This store can't seem to decide if it's selling comics and memorabilia or lingerie and adult toys. Fairly large location though and the stock rotates often so this may be the right store for you. You will not have an issue parking because the lot has about twenty spaces. Downtown Moscow also has street parking so hooray! The staff is generally friendly and knowledgeable. As in any store that all depends on the day and who helps you. Prices are fair on most items. As far as the adult items they do mark things up but being in Moscow you don't really have a lot of items for some of their merchandise. Amazon is bigger now so hopefully management will tweak prices accordingly to keep it competitive. If you're grabbing a few extra accessories for a costume or Halloween party this is your local spot. Read Bri T. and Kevin C's review for more comic and costume section details!

I do not understand the negative reviews of this store. The employees were quick to help anytime I had any questions and even told us about the free module Saturdays. The unique thing about this store is that it is not a toxic atmosphere like you may experience at the downtown Pullman gaming store. It has gaming of all types such as cards, board games, and table top rpg's. There is also costuming which I think fits quite well with the rest of the store as many gamers enjoy cosplay and the like. It was clean, the employees were respectful and were quick to remove negative customers who were rude, inappropriate and disruptive. I cannot praise this store enough. Most certainly the best gaming store around.

Wide selection of games from children to adult. Lots of Warhammer and D&D merchandise. Not a large selection of comics in store but I believe they will order whatever you want. Costumes/cosplay stuff rotates throughout the year, and the hidden adult-toy area has an okay selection. But I will definitely recommend this store for board games and Warhammer!!

I really like the selection of games here. We got The Battle of Hogwarts here and play it weekly. Have the expansion pack, too. Also enjoy the Fantastic Beasts Perilous Pursuits and Pandemic. The folks there have always been helpful and knowledgeable

I went here today because the costume portion of the store was recommended to me by a good friend. I was also told there is a sex-toy shop in the back room that I should check out. First off, as I was looking through the costumes, I was consistently followed by an employee as if I was going to steal something. They have just one dressing room, and the employee stands outside the dressing room the entire time, making you feel uncomfortable and rushed. Second, after showing an older female employee my ID to enter the sex shop, she ordered a younger male employee to be in there while I was. He followed me around the entire time I was in the sex shop, and it was very uncomfortable. I do not appreciate the lack of privacy that was given while looking at such a....personal election of items. If a female is going into the sex shop, they should have a female employee in there - and perhaps one that doesn't follow you around everywhere. I absolutely will not be back.

I was really disappointed in this store. I came in looking for comic book recommendations and was pretty much ignored. When I finally was able to get some help, it seemed as if I was inconveniencing the store. The store layout is weird and the selection is very limited. I felt kinda awkward the whole time I was in the store. The stores prices are rather high and they don't do any sales or promotions either. So I would recommend going to someone else in town or just shopping online. I won't go back.

For a comic shop, it has a really minuscule selection of comics. There are a couple shelves against the side of the wall, but the amount of current comics is almost non-existent. Then there's a couple tables with older selections of comics, which I appreciated. Please correct me if I am wrong, but if you want to get a subscription box, it's pretty pricey. I asked the cashier at the time and she told me that you pay for your box, then you also pay per series you want to subscribe to, then, of course, you pay for your comic as well. There are no other benefits other than that you are guaranteed a copy of whatever you're subscribed to. It was being justified that it's due to the fluctuation of college students coming in and out, so you also have to pay to cancel your box as well. Aside from the comics, there were also TCG -- mainly Magic, figurines, board games, and costumes. It seemed like this store tried too hard to do everything that it doesn't have much of anything. Despite the lack of items, my visit was still pretty pleasant as the cashier was friendly and helpful. If I'm ever out in this area again, it's hard to say if I'll go out of my way to revisit.

I got in the store knowing exactly what I wanted so when I was asked if I needed help I said no. It was not long before it was clear that I was being followed. (Creeper) peeking trough shelves and around cournors, it was weird , strange and totally creepy. After ten minutes of feeling very uncomfortable I left. An hour later I went back to talk to the owners. They made it clear it was all my fault for not realizing it was costumer service to be stalked. (They clearly did not care) After I ordered the stuff I wanted online I went to yelp and found out this offensive stalking like behavior happens a lot. (another situation) I was carded three times in one week by the same (carnie) dude to get in the back room. Theres no way he did not remember. He as well watched us like a hawk. Never going back, when every thing is available online cheaper.~~~~~~~~~Thanks for reading

If I could leave a 0 star review I would. I was sent to this shop by a friend and on my first visit was REFUSED the sale of an item on the grounds that I was not a regular customer. Of course now I will never be a regular patron and I urge any "new comers" to avoid the trip and save some time. Horrible service! Awful ethics! This shop should be shut down.
