A Tanzania safari is a thrilling and unforgettable adventure that offers the opportunity to explore the stunning wildlife, landscapes, and culture of Tanzania, a country located in East Africa. Tanzania is renowned for its diverse range of national parks and conservation areas, making it a prime destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.

Safaris in Tanzania can be customized to suit your preferences, whether you’re interested in a luxury lodge safari, a budget camping safari, or a combination of both. The dry season (June to October) is ideal for wildlife viewing as animals tend to gather around water sources, while the wet season (November to May) is excellent for bird watching and lush landscapes.

Top 10 Serengeti Safari Camps

Top 10 Serengeti Safari Camps

The Serengeti is one of the most famous places in Africa for a luxury safari, and this is no surprise – the area it covers is vast and with everything from rivers, rolling plains, forests and hills one can never get bored of returning there. The Serengeti boasts abundant wildlife and a fantastic culture, with the Tanzanian Masai being prevalent in the Eastern Serengeti. Luxury safaris here can be a combination of small luxury tented camps, and larger lodges. You can always find the right property for you, as there are so many, and contrary to other parts of Africa you can still get off the beaten track and into areas where you will not see another soul. Serengeti safaris will often take in the famous Wildebeest Migration, which happens there all year, they continue on their mad annual circuit which briefly passes into the Masai Mara between July and October (although this can still be seen from the Northern Serengeti). Even when the migration is not in certain areas of the Serengeti one can still have some of the best game viewing in Africa, which is what continues to make this one of Africa’s top luxury safari spots. Here are our top ten luxury Serengeti safari camps and lodges – in no particular order:

1            Mwiba River Lodge – Southern Serengeti

Mwiba is incredibly special as it’s located in it’s own vast 51,000 acre conservancy, Maswa, which borders the Southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This eight suited luxury Serengeti safari lodge is exceptionally spoiling with vast suites, every luxury one can imagine and this vast area to explore – you will not see another soul but will enjoy the freedom of a luxury safari with no people. One can walk, take night drives and spend time out in the bush having delicious bush meals, sundowners and other treats. This area comes alive from January to March when the migration hits it, but is fantastic all year.2            Kusini – Southern Serengeti

This luxury lodge offering in the Southern Serengeti is part tented camp and part lodge with white canvas tents built onto raised decking – again this lodge is all about getting out of the car and is a wonderful stop over on your way North from the Crater. The lodge leaves you wanting for nothing and a Serengeti safari here is a memorable one with time spent enjoying huge vistas, open plains and peaceful sundowners.

3            Dunia Camp – Central Serengeti

In our opinion this is the only place to stay in the central Serengeti, which can be a little busy with other vehicles. This small and intimate luxury tented camp is heaven, with lions roaring almost every night and fantastic game viewing. The guides at Dunia are experienced enough to be able to get you away from the crowds and into areas where there are fewer people. The camp represents everything that is good about a Serengeti safari.

4            Nduara Loliondo – Eastern Serengeti

Nduara is the place in Africa to have an authentic cultural experience – here you can enjoy one of the most remote areas of the Serengeti while walking and learning from the local Masai, who are charismatic and very friendly. This area is so pristine, and if you are travelling with your family it can be a good break from the standard Serengeti game drives – here you will shoot bows and arrows and envelope yourself in the Masai way of life, all while staying in this quirky and unique luxury Serengeti safari camp.

honeymoon safari Honeymoons on Safari in Luxury

5            Namiri Plains – Eastern Serengeti

This six tent luxury safari camp is located in one of the most exciting areas to hit Africa in years – their vast private conservancy was previously closed off to the public for twenty years, as it was being used for big cat research by the Frankfurt Zoological society – as such the big cat viewing here really is second to none and apart from the odd scientist you will not see another soul on your game drives. A Serengeti safari here will ruin you for all future big cat viewing, so good are the opportunities here.

6            Lamai Nomad – Northern Serengeti

This area is generally favoured between July and October when the migration is in the area – but it can be busy at that time and the game viewing is just as good from November to March too. Lamai is all white washed walls and romantic flowing mosquito nets, every room has views all the way to Kenya and the lodge manages to perfectly combine luxury with a feeling of relaxation and tranquillity. The lodge also boasts some of the best guides in all of Africa.

7            Serengeti Safari Camp – North / South / Western Serengeti

This is the best luxury mobile camp in the Serengeti, it moves to follow the migration so you can rest assured you are always in the thick of it. It’s luxury mobile tents are quirky and unique and you will always be treated to the best food, guides and location for game viewing. The atmosphere is of one big family and many people use this camp for their Serengeti safari year after year. It is a dreamy luxury safari camp with all the romance a luxury tented camp should have.

8            Alex Walker’s Serian – North / Southern Serengeti

This mobile option is also exceptional – often in the most dramatic and remote locations they really do get the best of the game viewing. Alex Walker is a famous guide, and as such the guides at his camps are amazing (he has camps in Kenya too) – due to the remote locations of this luxury Serengeti safari camp one can do everything from walking to fly camping, which adds an excellent extra dimension to your Serengeti safari.

9            Singita Mara River – Northern Serengeti

Singita Mara River tented camp bears the Singita name proudly and is quite a unique property, it is exceptionally modern and exceptionally luxurious. The Singita properties are famous for taking luxury safaris to a whole new level and this is certainly what they have done in the Serengeti. Singita Mara is eco friendly as well as having every luxury one could possibly hope for. It’s location on the Mara river is unbelievable for game viewing all year round.

10            Singita Explore – Western Serengeti

Finally another mobile camp in the Western Serengeti – this is one of the finest mobile camps in the world and can combine with riding or walking safaris which are a highlight. Singita also have four other extremely luxurious properties in this area but for the sheer romance of Singita Serengeti Explore we feel this one is worth a serious mention.

Serengeti National Park in  Tanzania  is a spectacular safari destination famous for the Big Five and big cat sightings. It’s also one of the best places to view the annual great migration that sees millions of wildebeest and zebra cross the endless plains in columns of dust. Watch predator–prey interactions, including crocodile that lie in wait at river crossings. Although you can see animals year-round, the best time for a migration safari is June/July to October, when most of the river crossings happen. With a wealth of wildlife acting as a drawcard, there are many accommodations in the area.

Why Visit Serengeti National Park

“There’s more to see than can ever be seen, more to do than can ever be done.” When musicians Elton John and Tim Rice wrote the opening tune to Disney’s “The Lion King,” they were describing the “Circle of Life.” But this lyric serves as a fitting description for world-renowned Serengeti National Park. This magnificent game park sprawls across 5,700 square miles of northern Tanzania in East Africa.

Within the boundaries of the Serengeti, you’ll hear thousands of animals: Hyenas cackle as elephants trample well-worn safari roads and hippos splash in watering holes. And at any given time, more than 2,000 lions are poised to pounce on unsuspecting prey, preparing to chase their unlucky target through the seemingly endless waves of golden grass.

The scenery rustles with the swift steps of loping giraffes, and tree branches shake with every monkey’s movement. But the most magical site you’ll behold is The Great Migration, during which White’s paradise is drowned by a sea of animals as more than one million wildebeest, zebras and gazelles traverse the Serengeti in search of greener pastures.

Serengeti National Park

Best things to do in Serengeti:

The main attraction here is the wildlife. Serengeti National Park houses the highest concentration of large mammals in the world, so you’re bound to spot giraffes, elephants, hippos and, of course, lions. You’ll also come across more than 500 species of birds, including ostriches and flamingos.

But while seeing one or two animals at a time may be exciting, nothing beats seeing them in a pack. The Great Migration is the Serengeti’s main draw: This voyage of more than one million wildebeest, zebras and other hoofed animals is one of the world’s largest wildlife spectacles. When you tire of gazing at grazers, head to Moru Kopjes to mingle with rhinos or to the Retina Hippo Pool to watch these massive mammals splash about.

The primary reason to visit Serengeti National Park is to witness The Great Migration. Considered one of the world’s largest animal migrations, The Great Migration involves more than one million wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and a variety of other animals traversing the Serengeti annually in search of food and breeding grounds.

What to eat in Serengeti?

Restaurants are few and far between in Serengeti National Park, but if you want to enjoy a sit-down meal, you’re in luck – several of the park’s lodges feature one or more on-site restaurants. Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge, for example, has an eatery that specializes in buffet-style meals with traditional safari and Tanzanian fare, such as locally sourced coffee and tea,  nyama choma  (grilled meats) and  ugali  (a maize dish that has a porridge-like consistency). And at the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, three dining venues are available, including an outdoor terrace with pizza and African-inspired tapas and an indoor buffet with various African and international dishes. Boma Grill, the property’s third restaurant, seats guests around an open-air fire pit as they savor African dishes and watch the Masai perform a traditional dance. Many Serengeti lodges will also offer bush dining experiences, where diners can enjoy a private meal in the wild.

However, most travelers opt to go on safari (most of which cover all meals in tour rates) or purchase food at one of the park’s convenience stores to prepare at a campsite. Safari tour operators that provide meals at a lodge or boxed to enjoy picnic-style include Trip Insight Tanzania . Keep in mind that some companies charge an additional fee for soft drinks and alcoholic beverages. For budget-conscious travelers, the park sells drinks, snacks and raw meat for grilling at convenience stores in the Seronera River Valley and Naabi Hill.

Best time to Visit Serengeti National Park:

The best times to visit Serengeti National Park are from January to February or from June through September, although you should plan your trip around the movement of The Great Migration.

For example, winter is the best time to see the herd in Southern Serengeti, while the Western Corridor and Northern Serengeti are the best places to spend the summer and autumn months. Most safari operators will have a good idea of where the animals are headed and when, and most will adjust their itineraries based on the herd’s movement.

Temperatures remain relatively constant with daytime highs resting in the 80s. You’ll find cooler weather in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area due to its higher elevation. April and May see the most rainfall, and many lodges and camps close for this slower season.

Getting Around Serengeti National Park

The best way to get around Serengeti National Park is by safari. Safari guides know how to best navigate the park’s dirt roads and how to find the most fascinating wildlife. Many safari packages also cover transportation to and from the airstrips, food and lodging. If you prefer to travel on your own, you can rent a car (and even hire a driver) at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), which is located about 190 miles east of the park’s main entrance, Naabi Hill Gate. Additionally, all five regions of the Serengeti – Northern Serengeti, the Western Corridor, Eastern Serengeti, Central Serengeti and Southern Serengeti – are accessible by air through several regional carriers and nine internal airstrips.

What is the best way to visit Serengeti?

Choosing a reliable tour operator is the number one factor for a successful safari experience. However, if you are going on a private safari to public campsites, make sure to get all the necessary permits beforehand.

We recommend spending as many days in the Serengeti as possible. While there are many different accommodation options, the extra cost of staying for longer will be well worth it.

Additionally, make sure to come during the dry season to spot more animals, and be mindful of your travel dates.

How to get to Serengeti

How to reach Serengeti National Park?

Most safaris to the Serengeti start from the town of Arusha. The best option to get there is to fly into  Kilimanjaro International Airport  (JRO) which is situated about 46km/29mi from Arusha. It is also possible to fly into  Julius Nyerere International Airport  (DAR), just outside of Dar es Salaam, and fly on to  Arusha Airport  (ARK) or  Kilimanjaro International Airport  (JRO).

There are regular flights from Arusha to several airstrips inside the park.

It’s also possible to drive; the trip is about 325km/202mi and will take about eight hours. It is a bumpy ride but it’s scenic and you’ll see some wildlife on the way.

As the trip takes you through the Ngorongoro Conservation area, a popular option is to fly one way, and drive the other way taking in an overnight stop to visit the Ngorongoro Crater. Coming from the crater, the distance to the Seronera area in the Serengeti is about 140km/90mi, and the driving time is about three hours.

Serengeti national park distance from Arusha is around 419.2 Km if passing through B144 Tanzania. The drive takes 6 to 7 hours drive depending on the traffic flow on the highway, the driving is much controlled by the traffic police with more speed limits especially in certain points.

This New Luxury Safari Camp Moves to 9 Locations Across Serengeti National Park During the Great Migration

Wilderness Usawa Serengeti just opened in Tanzania, and T+L contributor and hotel expert Jackie Caradonio was the first to review it.

Jackie Caradonio is a New York–based writer and photographer who specializes in travel, dining, sustainability, and art and design. Her articles and photography have appeared in publications such as Condé Nast Traveler, Bloomberg Pursuits, Afar, The New York Times, and others.

It was what the guides in Serengeti National Park call a “small crossing” — slight in both the number of animals involved (no more than 100) and the number of humans who witnessed it (just a handful). But it was hardly minor to me.

The zebras were casual — too casual, I suspected — as they trotted across the Mara River. Murky brown water swallowed up their legs and haunches, yet they remained unhurried. All was peaceful.

Then the crocodiles came. At first one, then two — then six — and within seconds, they had taken hold of an adolescent. The water splashed and bubbled, the young equine scuttled, the crocodiles worked in unsettling concert. Suddenly, the zebra broke away, bucking its hind legs in one last Hail Mary attempt at escape. But it was too late. At the first sight of red, I put my binoculars down and trained my focus on the distant savannah.

Noticing the tears welling up in my eyes, Chrisple Sikawa, my guide from Usawa mobile camp, offered the salve of logic. “This is the circle of life,” he said. “You wouldn’t want the crocodiles to go hungry, would you?”

Jackie Caradonio/Travel + Leisure

Heartbroken as I was, I knew he was right. I also knew that such dramatic sightings are precisely the reason one comes to Tanzania’s most famous safari destination: to see the wilderness at its most brazen and brutish, as real as it has ever been or ever will be.

That’s the promise of the great migration, the mass journey of roughly 2 million wildebeests and zebras, and the headlining act of almost any Serengeti safari. The event is constant and year-round, spanning 500 miles from the southern Serengeti to Kenya’s Masai Mara, just north of the Tanzania border, making it a moving target for the nearly 500,000 tourists who come to the national park every year.

That transient nature is what enticed Keith Vincent, co-founder and CEO of the hospitality company Wilderness , to create Wilderness Usawa Serengeti , a roving camp that opened on its first of nine eventual sites across the Serengeti on July 26. “In the old days of guiding, you had a vehicle and a tent, and you moved wherever the wilderness went and set up camp along the way,” Vincent says. “With Usawa, I wanted to give that freedom back to our guests.”

Wilderness Usawa Serengeti

• A luxury mobile camp, Usawa travels across the Serengeti National Park, popping up seasonally in nine locations across the national park, all set along the path of the great migration.

• The camp’s six en-suite tents are designed to have minimal impact on the environment, with off-grid power and water systems, and an innovative design that requires only manpower to build and disassemble.

• The main attraction of any stay at Usawa are the daily game drives and safari walks, during which guests can glimpse the great migration, big five animals, and other wildlife.

• Usawa’s custom-designed tents are decorated with art, furniture, and crafts made exclusively by Tanzanian artisans.

• The camp’s all-inclusive rates include three meals a day, all game drives and safari walks, and on-the-ground support from the moment your journey starts.

To do so, Vincent first had to strip down the luxury safari camp experience regularly found at other Wilderness camps. There are no plunge pools or spa treatments at Usawa, but rather a wide-open expanse on the crest of a remote hill, where six guest tents and a larger main tent are wrapped 360 degrees in mesh and canvas, giving a sense of near-total exposure to the elements. The entire operation is off-grid, with lighting supplied by rechargeable lanterns and solar-powered lamps (romantic or vexing, depending on your task) and showers fed by buckets of manually heated water that funnel into taps by simple gravity (and, boy, do they feel amazing).

Still, nothing comes close to roughing it. King-size beds are dressed in crisp white linens, bathrooms are stocked with Inaya Zanzibar’s all-natural products, and décor is a curated assemblage of local design and ingenuity. The greatest luxury of all, however, is Usawa’s connection to nature: the cool breezes that drift through your tent, the sound of raindrops and elephants trumpeting as you drift to sleep, the first sliver of early morning sun as it stretches across the horizon to gently wake you.

“But the real fun of it,” Vincent insists, “is the chase.” Thus, Usawa moves with the great migration — from the south’s calving season, during which hundreds of wildebeests are born every day, to the mass crossings that take place on the Mara River — with Wilderness operating up to three identical camps at any one time, while a fourth transitions to the next site. Guests can easily follow the action, hopscotching from camp to camp. Once the herd moves on, Wilderness packs up and makes for the next location, leaving no trace behind.

Over five days at one of the camp’s northern locations, I found that, however great the migration itself is, it was only a small part of any experience in the Serengeti, which is home to one of the most wildlife-rich expanses in Africa. Spanning more than 5,500 square miles, it is the quintessential picture of sub-Saharan wilderness, home to an abundance of big cats, as well as the rest of the Big Five animals (including a growing population of rhinos), plus giraffes, elephants, hyenas, and more than 500 bird species.

But, in the end, it was the great migration that once again beckoned. Though the heartache of our earlier sighting was still fresh in my mind, I agreed to let Sikawa show me what he called “the magic of a big crossing.” And so, we set out for the Mara, tracing its banks until a massive swirl of dust caught our attention — a scuffle of hooves pounding the dirt, Sikawa explained.

We arrived at its source minutes later, just as the first wildebeests were crossing, grunting and bucking all the while, literally running for their lives. One by one, as they made their safe passage across the river, they surrounded our vehicle, their mews nothing short of celebratory to my ears. The crossing carried on for close to an hour, and when the dust finally settled, not a single casualty had occurred. Then, a calf, clearly exhausted, dropped onto its knees to nurse from its mother’s teat. I felt the tears welling up once again, and this time they poured out like rain. It had been quite the journey — for all of us.

Designed by Luxury Frontiers (whose other hospitality projects include Camp Sarika by Amangiri in Utah and Naviva, a Four Seasons Resort in Punta Mita, Mexico), Usawa’s six en-suite tents are made from overlapping swatches of canvas and mesh to eliminate the barrier between the indoors and the great outdoors.

Courtesy of Wilderness Safaris

Still, every creature comfort has been accounted for. King-size beds are dressed in luxury linens; minibars are stocked with fresh coffee, tea, and snacks; and toiletries are from all-natural skincare brand Inaya Zanzibar. Interiors throughout the camp showcase Tanzania’s artisans and designers: handwoven baskets, blankets, and pillows are sourced from a local collective that empowers women to achieve financial independence. Glassware, beaded chandeliers, and leather details come from Sanaa, a non-profit that teaches lucrative crafts to those with disabilities. And tables and chairs made from upcycled plastic are the ingenious creation of Arusha-based DuniaDesigns.

Outside, my husband and I lounged on our hammock (often with a bottle of South African rosé) or watched the surrounding hills through binoculars from a pair of canvas chairs. We regularly witnessed game drive–worthy sightings right outside our tent, from a family of elephants crossing the hills to the hundreds of zebras and wildebeest that wandered right through camp.

Usawa is all-inclusive, including spirits and a wide selection of wines from the African continent. The culinary team takes full advantage of Tanzania’s robust farming culture, serving both international and traditional Swahili dishes. Okra takes on heavenly forms in spicy curry, South African syrah sings with fragrant Zanzibari-spiced pilau rice, and creamy mtori soup, made with fresh plantains, is equal parts sweet and savory — and utterly irresistible.

All mealtimes and menus are customized for guests as they plan each day with their guide. Pre-safari breakfasts are lavish spreads of porridge, fruit, pastries, and made-to-order eggs. Lunch is served overlooking the savannah at the edge of camp, or as a picnic on game drives. Dinners are multi-course affairs served under the starry night sky or in the main tent.

Experiences and Amenities

Activities are centered on the magnificent theater that is the great wilderness of the Serengeti. As Usawa travels among nine locations throughout the national park, guests are afforded the chance to witness the great migration up-close in its many phases. From January to March, the southern Serengeti bears witness to the birth of thousands of wildebeests (an estimated 800 calves are born each day). Come July, the herds move north and river crossings are the main event.

Game drives and bush walks are offered daily. One morning we set out straight from camp on foot, skirting a family of elephants as they broke down an entire acacia tree for an afternoon feast, then catching sight of a cheetah sprinting across the hillside 100 yards away. On a drive the next day, we encountered a mother cheetah and her cubs, the white of their bellies fat and round, the scruff of their chins blood-stained—and vultures circling overhead in pursuit of the remains of their kill. We waited patiently outside a cluster of bushes for a leopard to at last poke out its spotted head; watched a thick-maned lion perch proudly atop a boulder, keeping a watchful eye over a valley filled with prey; and counted the many crocodiles ominously patrolling the banks of the river.

Family-friendly Offerings

Usawa welcomes children from six years old. Buy-outs are available for families with members of all ages. All safari activities can be customized to accommodate different ages and abilities.

Wilderness’s greatest ambition in creating Usawa was to create a safari camp that would minimally impact the Earth. Power is provided by solar panels and portable batteries that are recharged at a main power bank. Tents are constructed only by employees, ensuring the least possible disturbance to the native wildlife and enabling the camp to be easily and quickly moved from location to location. “We’ll leave no trace,” Vincent says. “One storm, and the grassland will look like we’ve never been there.”

To preserve the land, Usawa has forgone constructing sewage systems, employing a series of innovations to stay more eco-friendly. Toilets operate on portable septic systems, with waste routinely removed from the park or used to fertilize the grounds when possible. Filtered cold and hot water are supplied to guests throughout the day. Showers are especially clever in their operation, supplied by heated water that is manually fed into overhead buckets then funneled into taps. Simply pull the chain for a steamy cascade.

Usawa is not ADA compliant, which is typical for safari camps like this one.

To arrive at Serengeti National Park, travelers can fly via Hamad International Airport in Doha to Kilimanjaro International Airport, then connect from Arusha Airport to one of Serengeti National Park’s airstrip. Wilderness plans all itineraries end-to-end with VIP travel perks, including Al Maha service when flying with Qatar Airways. In Arusha, we stayed at Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge, a Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards 2020 winner set on a coffee farm.

Usawa’s nine locations stretch from the southern Serengeti National Park to Tanzania’s northern border with Kenya. Up to three camps will operate simultaneously to allow guests to follow the great migration as closely as possible. Wilderness arranges guest stays based on predictions of the great migration path.

How to Get the Most Value Out of Your Stay

Safaris are admittedly costly, but Wilderness’s all-inclusive pricing includes everything: accommodations, unlimited meals and beverages, all activities, and transfers within Serengeti National Park. Wilderness also partners with airlines such as Qatar Airways to offer discounted flights for safari goers. Nightly rates at Usawa start at $950 per person, with a minimum two-night stay.

It’s the perfect setting for a private safari in Tanzania if you want to experience what is one of the most famous moments of the Serengeti migration , as immense herds attempt to make the precarious Grumeti Viver crossing. It’s one of the only areas in Tanzania where you can see black and white colobus monkeys, with an on-site hippo pool meaning these animals are also frequent visitors. Their rustic yet sophisticated safari tents are eclectically decorated and boast open-air showers while outdoor ovens and traditional fires provide a touch of romance for dinners under the stars.

What our travelers say

“ Our experience in this place was wonderful, we were greeted warmly at our arrival, the tents are nicely decorated, the beds were very confortable, very clean, my kids loved the bucket shower which turned out to be warm. Dinner service was excellent, food quality was outstanding and service provided by Roman and Innocent was incredible. Our family loved this place. Yes animals roam free to the camp but we never felt unsafe, my kids loved watching hienas, jackals, etc. It was the best of all our accommodations including the 5 stars. Being in nature with a sky full of stars like we have never seen before and around incredibly warm staff was one of the highlights of our Holliday. Very grateful with all Pumzika staff. We would love to come back. ” "We wish we had stayed longer "
“ We stayed here 1 night in order to do a balloon ride over the Serengeti. We had a long day on safari so unfortunately we arrived after dark so could not have a decent look around, but the tents were great and well equipped with comfy queen bed, toilet, wash basin area and open air shower room. ( no roof) food tent was great and food was lovely. Staff were amazing and went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable. They arranged a super early wake up call for us and the staff all got up early ( 440 am) to wake us and serve us breakfast! Amazing guys and thank you! I was a little taken aback when I saw the pull shower for the first time ( I have never done camping before and this is def not roughing it) but once it was filled with warm water it was really pleasant having a shower in our tent where we could see the thousands of stars in the sky! It was magical. Loved it. ” "Great little tented camp worth visiting"

Enhancing lives at Serengeti Safari Camp

From enhancing dynamic careers to working with local communities and conservation projects, here are some inspiring stories from migration chasing mobile camp.

Life long learning & growth

Creating career paths

Photography internships

We believe in business as a force for good and so we launched our unique photography internship to give young aspiring Tanzanian wildlife photographers the opportunity to hone their skills from our camps and wilderness we call home.

Why do we think this is important? Keen young wildlife photographers in Tanzania are short of opportunities of this kind so we use our camps to give them access to Tanzania’s wilderness and wildlife.

Training and development

Tents created in the open air for a life in the bush

We’ve worked with Baadiye since the beginning, so he is used to bringing some of our more unusual and challenging tented designs to life.

Baadiye is an old hand in the tent making industry and we enjoy knowing that our camps are being handmade by Tanzanians, stitch by stitch.

Twenty years of working with Nomad has allowed Baadiye to diversify, he is now running properties across Arusha that he has bought and rents to others. Talent is everywhere, opportunity is not. And that is where we come in.

Northern Tanzania safaris

Our Northern Tanzania camps are in enviable locations that mean we can take you deeper into this epic wilderness and create life changing experiences.

How Much Does an African Safari Cost?

B eing surrounded by giraffes, elephants, lions, zebras, and cheetahs in Africa sounds like a dream come true. But it also sounds expensive. Getting a guide, secluded accommodations, and travel can add up. So, how much does an African safari cost? An African safari can cost between $200 and $1,600 per person per day. Read more on the breakdown of these costs below.

How Much Does an African Safari Cost on Average?

The cost of an African safari will vary depending on where it is, what type of accommodations you get, and what time of year you go.

The most budget-friendly, camping in a tent, will cost about $200 per person per day. The most luxurious African safari can cost up to $1,600 per person per day.

Your African safari cost includes all park admission fees, meals, camping equipment, drinking water, and transportation. They can be a short one-day adventure to a multi-week long excursion. You should account for tipping your guides during your journey. The standard tip is $10 to $20 per person per day.

Things That Impact Your African Safari Cost

You can do many things to cut your African safari cost, while other things will bring the price up. I always tend to focus on what’s important to me and splurge on those aspects. For instance, if you like staying in luxury accommodations, you can splurge on your stay and go during the off-season to save a little bit.

The Length of Your Safari

Obviously, the total cost of your safari will be more the longer your safari is. However, the daily cost is cheaper when you book multiple days under one guide. It’s like buying in bulk at Sam’s Club. You save money in the long run.

The Time of Year You Go

There is a high and low season for African Safaris. The high season is when school is out, and during the dry season. There will be more tourists and higher costs from June to September on most safaris.

The low season is during the rainy season, typically between March and May. The problem with going during the rainy season is animals don’t tend to come out as much. The best time to go on an African safari is during the winter, between January and February.

Where Your Safari Is

The country and park you decide to do your safari in will sway the cost. Doing a safari that goes across multiple countries will cost more while staying in one park is less expensive. South Africa has some of the cheapest safari options because they have more self-drive options, and the parks are built better for these types of excursions.

The Level of Accommodation

You can stay in everything from a camping tent that you could buy at your local outdoor store to permanent yurts with furniture and modern technologies. There are even resort-like stays that you can book for your African safari with pools, villas, and bar and restaurant service.

Your Mode of Transportation

Driving yourself through one of the many parks and reserves is an option sometimes, but it’s not the best option. Your best bet is to book a guided safari because the guides know where all the animals like to go. That way, you’re more likely to see all the wildlife you want.

Less costly guided safaris are also typically in open-roof minivans that they cram people into. The nicer African safari tours use nice jeeps that are entirely open, giving you a chance to see everything wherever you sit.

How Many People Go On The Safari

The more people that come with you, the less your African safari will cost. Most accommodations will hold two people, and some will hold up to five. They will still charge per person for the safari. Even though, it will be less than if you go by yourself because you are sharing one accommodation.

The Best African Safari Destinations

You can go on a safari in different areas of Africa. Each location has unique wildlife that they are known for. You should choose a particular destination depending on what kind of African safari experience you want. Some destinations are also more budget-friendly.

Kenya is the original safari destination. It makes sense, with multiple large game reserves, the great migration, and a slew of cultural experiences to encounter. Some of the best reserves to visit in Kenya are:

  • Masai Mara National Reserve- The most popular park in Kenya.
  • Samburu Game Reserve- Has unique wildlife, like Beisa Oryx, Reticulated Giraffes, and Somali Ostrich .
  • Tsavo National Parks- The largest and most remote park in Kenya.
  • Amboseli National Park- You can see Mount Kilimajaro at this park.
  • Lake Nakuru National Park- Millions of flamingos and white rhinos live here .

There are many great lodges to stay at in and around these parks that will take you on a drive to see the wildlife every day. One that I recommend is Elephant Bedroom Camp. It gets its name because elephants frequent the grounds, making sure to say hello to all of the visitors. You may also see monkeys and Impalas from your luxury tent.

This camp has all of the comforts that you would see at any modern accommodation, including a pool, hot and cold water, electricity, and WIFI. You will get a daily drive through the bush in an open-air vehicle, a picnic lunch, cultural visits, and entertainment by Samburu warriors.

If your dream is to see a gorilla or chimpanzee in the rainforest, then Uganda is the African safari destination for you. It’s different than most other African safaris in the way that the safaris in Uganda are set in rainforests instead of desert land. You can even stop by some amazing waterfalls along your safari. Some parks to check out in Uganda are:

  • Murchison Falls National Park- Has various mammals, like giraffes, buffaloes, and crocodiles.
  • Bwindi Forest National Park- Has the largest population of endangered silverback gorillas.
  • Kibale Forest National Park- Has the highest diversity of primates in Africa.
  • Mgahinga National Park- A large park spanning three countries where endangered silverback gorillas live.
  • Queen Elizabeth National Park- One of two places you can find lions that climb trees.

To be fully immersed in the rainforests that gorillas and chimpanzees roam, stay at Bwindi Lodge . You may get the chance to spot some birds and chimpanzees swinging from the trees in the Bwindi forest right from your room. There’s also a village nearby that has the award-winning Bwindi Bar.

Another advantage of staying at the Bwindi Lodge is you can trek into the forest to see the mountain gorillas and other wildlife instead of having to take a drive. They also have a waterfall trail for you to enjoy the landscape as well.

Botswana is a lesser-known safari destination, so it will feel more exclusive at a smaller cost. Even though it has a variety of landscapes to view different types of wildlife. One of the most popular types of safaris you can do in Botswana is a boat safari, where you can see elephants and hippos. The best parks to see in Botswana are:

  • Okavango Delta- The most popular park in Botswana, famous for boat safaris on the wilding channels.
  • Chobe National Park- You can take a car to this park, making it more accessible. Elephants are a popular group here.
  • The Kalahari- You can find a black-maned lion here during the wet seas on.
  • Makgadikgadi Pans- Find unique African animals across glistening salt pans.
  • Moremi Wildlife Reserve- One of the most remote and diverse wildlife areas of Botswana.

Staying at Abu Camp gets you up close and personal with elephants. Since the camp is next to a lagoon, there is a herd of elephants that call this camp home. There’s even a chance to sleep in the elephant boma for the ultimate experience. You can also experience every type of safari you want, whether it’s a game drive or a boat safari.

Abu Camp has super comfy accommodations with modern furnishings and all the luxuries you would see in any other hotel. There’s a plunge pool to cool off during the day while you wait for your evening safari. Each private canvas tent overlooks the Delta for amazing views.

Tanzania is home to the well-known Serengeti, known for the safaris that explore the great herd. It is also the home to Mount Kilimanjaro, where the most adventurous can summit its peak. This place is basically the home of everything you think of when someone says “Africa.” The most popular safari parks in Tanzania are:

  • Serengeti National Park- The world’s most popular destination for a safari.
  • Ruaha National Park- The largest park in Tanzania with many elephants and giraffes.
  • Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area- Home to the Ngorongoro Crater, where you can find the largest population of lions in the world .
  • Lake Manyara National Park- Home to a massive lake where you can spot animals looking for water during the dry s eason.
  • Mikumi National Park- Mostly flat grassland, making it easy to spot wildlife.

For the best views over the Serengeti day and night, Klein’s Camp is a great place to stay for your safari. It is situated just on the border of the national park, so they are one of the only camps to offer open-air night drives. It is also in the perfect position to watch over the Serengeti from your room.

Klein’s camp feels extremely exclusive because they have 10,000 hectares of privately leased land. You can go offroading, go any time of day, or follow a zebra trail. They will also take you on specialized photography tours and visit the Maasai village to see their unique culture.

South Africa

South Africa is where you want to go to save a few dollars. There is plenty of wildlife, but it has better infrastructure than most other safari destinations. That means there’s more opportunity to do a self-guided tour, which saves you tons. There are also great guided tours too. The best reserves in South Africa are:

  • Kruger National Park- The most popular park in South Africa with the big five.
  • Madikwe Game Reserve- A malaria-free, affordable park with rare wild dogs.
  • Sabi Sands Game reserve- A private reserve bordering Kruger National Park.
  • Phinda Private Game Reserve- Famous for cheetah sightings.
  • Tswalu Kalahari Reserve- The largest private game reserve in South Africa.

If you want to stay in luxury on your South African safari, Loapi Tented Camp gives you the safari aesthetic. However, it comes complete with a butler, fully stocked kitchens, and an environmentally friendly plunge pool. Each of the six accommodations has plenty of space between each, giving you a secluded feel.

Each safari home has its own butler, a private chef to cook all your meals en-suite, a study with wifi, a full bar, and indoor/outdoor showers. You will also get your own safari vehicle with a private tour guide to take you out every evening. If you don’t feel like taking a vehicle out, go horseback instead.
