Spiritualized review – Jason Pierce twists a simple idea into elegant new shapes

Brighton Dome Die-hard fans shower adoration on former Spaceman 3 frontman as he guides stripped-back band through giddily euphoric rushes and walls of improvised noise

I t says something about Spiritualized’s latest album, Everything Was Beautiful, that even with nine musicians onstage, their live incarnation very much performs a bare-bones version of its contents. Frontman Jason Pierce more-or-less set out his musical stall in the late 80s, while in his previous band Spacemen 3 – its pitch is in an area bound on one side by garage rock and droning psychedelia and on the other by gospel and blues – and has essentially spent the intervening 35 years either augmenting it or stripping it down. With its cast of 30 musicians, its strings, brass and “chimes from the Whitechapel Bell Foundry ”, Everything Was Beautiful falls into the augmenting category, alongside 2001’s Let It Come Down and the most celebrated Spiritualized album of all, 1997’s Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space.

Pierce’s single-minded approach to music has survived umpteen lineup changes and a couple of brushes with death, and is the stuff of which rabid cult followings are made: the venue isn’t packed, but the audience are seasoned. Pierce has barely taken his seat at the right of the stage before a bellowed proclamation of undying love rings out from the stalls – “Jason I fackin’ love you!” – and the first time a song implodes into a wall of improvised noise, the wall of improvised noise gets a round of applause, as if it’s a greatest hit.

Spiritualized in concert at the Brighton Dome.

Pierce’s wilful embrace of limitations can occasionally seem, well, limited – the scattered yells of recognition that greet the opening of A Perfect Miracle might come from fans of Spiritualized’s 2018 album And Nothing Hurt, but they might equally be from people who think they’ve started playing the title track of Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space , to which it bears an unavoidable and presumably knowing resemblance, begging the question of whether repeating yourself so obviously is justified if you’re doing it deliberately.

More regularly, you’re struck by Pierce’s continued ability to twist an essentially simple idea into new shapes. The four tracks from Everything Was Beautiful are among the best things they play: The A Song (Laid In Your Arms) builds and builds into a giddily euphoric rush; the ferocious dynamic shifts of Let It Bleed (For Iggy) don’t need the album’s orchestration to make you catch your breath.

In fact, Spiritualized’s live incarnation’s ability to make up for the absence of the strings and horns in other ways is hugely impressive. For a band whose frontman remains in his trademark sedentary position throughout, they’re a remarkably nimble-sounding band, executing some genuinely astonishing handbrake turns: when the ferocious din at the end of She Kissed Me (It Felt Like a Hit) segues into the hushed Shine a Light it feels not unlike being on one of those fairground rides that hoists you to a great height then suddenly plummets downwards. At moments like that, you feel Pierce could go on twisting his essentially simple idea into new shapes for the rest of time.

Live music review: Spiritualized at Scoot Inn Friday was magical

On a near-perfect, Friday evening, English space-rock outfit Spiritualized returned to Austin to play a sold-out Scoot Inn. The nine-piece band brought by J Spaceman (aka Jason Pierce) that included three female backup singers delivered a magical, neo- psych rock performance to fans.

Spritualized with backup singers

It was only the second performance of Spiritualized’s tour supporting their latest effort, Everything Was Beautiful (Fat Possum Records) which has been delayed to drop on April 22. The band included songs from the new album in the set list (see below). Of particular note was the gorgeous lead track on the record, “Always Together with You” which the band played spectacularly, thrilling audience members already attuned to hear their brand of psych rock which employs elements of gospel, drone, blues and rock to form a sound unique to bandleader Pierce’s approach.

New tracks came early in the set list, including a gorgeous rendition of the final track on the forthcoming record, “I’m Coming Home Again.”  Indeed, the show did feel like a coming home. The new album is perhaps a continuation of the previous studio effort, 2018’s, And Nothing Hurt. Both albums highlight Pierce’s approach to neo-psych rock which is colored by an increasing lean towards pop melodies encased in rich, flowing stanzas of sustained drone underneath a tapestry of sonic effects, slide guitar and general musical mastery.

Spiritualized profile

The band was arranged in a semi-circle with their bandleader at the center of it, seated at a music stand with a pedal effects board at the bottom of it.  He employed an electric guitar, but appeared more like an orchestral bandleader than rock star. The mood suited the Austin faithful who showed up early and left late for a nearly two-hour performance at the historic, East Austin venue.

Spiritualized with guitiarist

The show began roughly at 8:30 p.m. and by the time 40 minutes had passed, Spiritualized were only beginning the fourth song in the show, deliciously stretching out the already long-format tracks to provide the delicious ear-candy everyone came for. It may have been April Fools Day but no one was messing around on stage last week, that’s for sure.

Spiritualized, Symphony Hall, Birmingham review - a curate's egg of a show from Jason Pierce's space rockers | reviews, news & interviews

Spiritualized, symphony hall, birmingham review - a curate's egg of a show from jason pierce's space rockers, an uneven performance from the veteran psychedelicists.

spiritualized tour 2022 review

Most artists tend to view the live arena as an opportunity to commune with fans old and new, with audience reaction being an integral part of the whole experience. Not so much Jason Pierce’s Spiritualized.

The nine-piece band trooped onto the stage at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall in two distinct groups. First to come were eight anonymous individuals, dressed in black, including two guitarists , a bassist, drummer, keyboard player and three backing singers. As they took their places, Jason Pierce, bandleader and the only constant member since Spiritualized’s inception, ambled on and took his seat at stage left under ambient, dark blue lighting and a cloud of dry ice – joining his band in a semi-circle with no-one actually paying much attention to the audience.

Once they were settled, and with no further fanfare, they launched into the driving groove of “Hey Jane” from Sweet Heart, Sweet Light – an album released a decade ago. As the song reached its mid-point, the band hit a crescendo with manic strobe lights, before reverting to an almost “LA Woman”-like groove. Without pausing for breath, they then kicked into the lively and squally “She Kissed Me (It Felt Like a Hit)” before shifting gears downwards for the woozy and atmospheric “Shine a Light” from 1992’s Lazer Guided Melodies .

This set the tone of the evening, with the band very much concentrating on Pierce, who largely kept his head down without any verbal communication with the paying public or even announcing the names of any of the tunes, never mind introducing any of the unfamiliar musicians on stage.

After the initial burst of older songs, Pierce’s crew then broke out some of the tunes from Everything Was Beautiful and And Nothing Hurt , Spiritualized’s very fine most recent discs, with the Pink Floyd-ish “I’m Coming Home Again”. Not that the predominantly middle-aged crowd seemed to mind.

Seated and largely unmoving, they were mesmerised and glued to their chairs from the first notes. In fact, pretty much the only crowd movement during the whole show, except for a seemingly constant, slack-bladdered stream to and from the toilets, was when a not entirely sober bloke managed to climb onto the stage during the hip-swinging “Best Thing You Never Had”. He looked more confused than anything, though – this not really being the place or show to attempt any stagediving. However, even this renegade fan failed to break the band’s concentration or jog their attention towards the auditorium, and he was quickly ushered away.

As the show hit its final strait, things began to drag noticeably and become somewhat listless – possibly due to the performance seemingly being for the band’s benefit rather than a show for their fans – and even the magnificent “Come Together”, stripped of its brass engine, sounded a bit thin. Final tune, “Sail on Through” was positively soporific and the band ended things by slinking offstage, again barely acknowledging the crowd and certainly not thanking them for turning up.

After a not inconsiderable break, during which some of the audience headed for the exits, Spiritualized returned for a rendition of the equally low-energy “So Long You Pretty Thing”. This was brought to a close with a couple of mumbled “thank yous” from Pierce and finally an acknowledgement of the crowd’s applause, as he briefly clapped back. Not that the remaining fans seemed anything short of completely satisfied with the whole evening’s entertainment.

Live Review: Spiritualized @ 9:30 Club — 9/8/22

Live Review: Spiritualized @ 9:30 Club — 9/8/22

The creation of art in an attempt to connect to people is the most primal urge in pop music, I think. Even those of us who don’t create but consume mill about in the mix, hoping to feel that connection with other folks thanks to the work of the artist. We hope some of that art will wash over us and provide relief in the form of connection.

Spiritualized, the wonderfully English psychedelic rock outfit fronted by Jason Pierce, deal with this phenomenon head-on in a beautiful new song called “Let It Bleed (for Iggy).” It was one of four new songs the space rockers presented in a recent show at 9:30 Club.

What was most satisfying about seeing Spiritualized live for the very first time was the realization that the band prized the art. And that they were unafraid to let it move them, even if that movement often was the result of melancholy. Part of what made the Spiritualized experience a sophisticated experience one, however, was that melancholy does not default to a state of defeat. Indeed, there is something very rousing about Spiritualized, and maybe that’s why the latest album leaned a bit into gospel.

“Let It Bleed (for Iggy),” performed at about two-thirds of the way through the set if you’re simply counting songs (and some of those songs are majestic in their length), appears on Everything Was Beautiful, the ninth studio album by Spiritualized, released by Fat Possum Records in April. At 9:30 Club on Sept. 8, Spiritualized played it between other new songs — “Best Thing You Never Had (The D Song)” and “The A Song (Laid in Your Arms).”

All three songs deal with loss, each to a different degree. From his seated position on stage left, J. Spaceman (the nom du guerre of our Mr. Pierce) delivered some jaunty power on “The Best Thing You Never Had,” a straightforward song about loss, or maybe rather not being able to lose what you never had. “The A Song” was a splendid classic rocker. But “Let It Bleed” had a peculiar beauty to it, and its positioning between the two other songs seemed deliberate.

Watch a live performance of “Let It Bleed” by Spiritualized on YouTube:

This latest album and 2018’s And Nothing Hurt (also issued by Fat Possum Records) dominated the set. Of the six songs from And Nothing Hurt, Spiritualized marked the middle of the setlist with “The Morning After” and closed the main set with “Sail on Through.” On “Sail on Through,” bassist James Stelfox played some gloriously delicate notes as a layer of the intro. Pierce sang beautifully with his distinctive if slight twang. And drummer Kevin Bales was a remarkable portrait of restraint, maintaining the peaceful ambiance of the song while also rhythmically driving it forward. The result was utterly transportative and imparted a feeling of elation throughout the very full house.

Well, you don’t want to turn up to a Spiritualized show and not get at least something from Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, the band’s third album and one of the most hailed records of the ’90s. Spiritualized gave 9:30 Club that nod with “Come Together” as the penultimate song in the set. “Come Together” arrived in a cascade of feedback with waves of noise from guitarists John Coxon and Doggen Foster. The song, about having a character with a serious monkey on his back, was an appropriately harsh interruption of an otherwise tranquil show.

For the encore, Spiritualized mined their album Sweet Heart Sweet Light, the band’s seventh, for “So Long You Pretty Thing,” completing a circuit as they began the show with the record’s “Hey Jane.” The distinctive opening of “So Long” featured a lovely melody by keyboardist Tom Edwards, who transmitted his presence from the back of the stage throughout the show.

Of course, “So Long You Pretty Thing” was a great send-off song on which to end the night but it also took us back to lonely journeys, reminding us that we as listeners hope to bond and feel kinship with one another during a musical experience such as this. J. Spaceman proved a powerful guide for that purpose, fashioning art with purpose and bringing us along with him on cosmic travels that ultimately feel unifying.

Spiritualized: Bridgewater Hall, Manchester – live review

spiritualized tour 2022 review

Spiritualized deliver a religious experience to those attending Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall on Sunday night. Iain Key and Banjo  were there for Louder Than War

Iain Key – I’m not sure how it’s happened, but it’s 25 years since I last saw Spiritualized live. A whole generation ago. Ironically the last time I’d seen them play was just around the corner from the Bridgewater Hall, at the Hacienda, It was a Sunday then too, 15th June. Just under 2 weeks later the iconic venue would close for good. I suspect I’m not the only one at the gig tonight who had been there 25 years ago; there will a few here too with kids who wouldn’t have been born. The Bridgewater Hall, I find, is always a little strange for ‘bands’ with it being all seated, the sound of course though is perfect and probably picked by Jason for that reason. The crowd is mixed, those looking like they’re coming for the Proms, hipsters, slackers and would be journalists.

Support this evening comes from British saxophonist John Butcher, who, as I found out later, is one of the leading figures in the world of avant-garde free improvisation, as well as being a member of the Spiritualized ensemble. After a brief 20min set, he leaves the stage. It’s not long before the main act arrives.

Spiritualized: Bridgewater Hall, Manchester - live review

This doesn’t feel like a gig, it’s more than that. Kicking off with Hey Jane and She Kissed Me (It Felt Light A Hit) the sound system is given a workout. Although we’re sat to the left of the stage, and technically behind the majority of the band, the acoustics are perfect. Surprisingly, rather than playing tracks from Everything Was Beautiful we are treated to a mesmerising rendition of Shine A Light. It’s religious, I can’t put it any other way. The hairs on my arm stand up and I have goosebumps as the sound envelops the audience. Although I’m Coming Home Again is next, which could have easily been an encore, we then get 4 tracks from And Nothing Hurt. The gorgeous A Perfect Miracle; I’m Your Man; The Morning After and Here It Comes (The Road) Lets Go. In fact, the more is played from the previous album than the current one. Not that I’m complaining.

The band are on top form tonight, as are the backing singers. I’ll be honest, an hour into the two hour set I was just soaking it all in, the sound and light being hypnotic and transporting me elsewhere. Looking around I wasn’t the only one, plenty of staring eyes and heads nodding in time to the music. The main set closed on the trio of Soul On Fire, Come Together and Sail On Through. Jason mutters “Thank You,” before leaving the stage, the only words he’s spoken thus far. The band then return for a glorious So Long You Pretty Thing, providing one last blast of intoxication before we’re ushered out into the cool Manchester air.

Banjo – I first saw Spiritualized back in 1991, a frankly ridiculous 30 plus years ago. Since then, I have taken every opportunity to see them live and this week’s gig at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall was my 40th Spiritualized gig. So what has changed over the years? Well, the most striking difference is the size of the venue for this latest gig. It’s a long way from the sticky carpets and 400 capacity of Liverpool’s Krazy House in 1991 to the sleek, vast and modern Bridgewater Hall. This is not particularly surprising, as Spiritualized have always been one of the best live bands you could possibly lay your eyes on.

Spiritualized: Bridgewater Hall, Manchester – live review

The stage is set up with amps and microphones in a horseshoe shape, giving the show a hint of the rehearsal room. The lights dim and a huge cheer goes up as musicians wander on and take up their positions, a cheer which grows louder as head honcho Jason Pierce walks out from the wings and takes his place on his stool, stage right and they launch into Hey Jane. Towards the end of the song, they indulge in some of their customary freestyle noise wig outs as strobe lights strafe the audience. Way down at stage front, I know that the effect of this is an intense, blistering auditory and visual overload, but from so high up it is quite odd watching the squall take place below but not quite being part of it, a bit like looking out of a plane window.

The next song She Kissed Me (And It Felt Like A Hit) again comes to an expanded noisy ending before the music suddenly turns into the quiet, reflective start of Shine A Light. Spiritualized have always been good at this sort of thing and it is an ability that the years have failed to dull.

Spiritualized: Bridgewater Hall, Manchester - live review

At this point, I must confess that I have no idea who is actually in Spiritualized these days, but Pierce has long had the ability to surround himself with like-minded and sympathetic musicians and the latest incarnation is no exception. There is no grandstanding, no flash and no frills, the music Spiritualized create is good enough to stand on its own without that kind of thing.

Towards the end of the set, they play the magnificent Soul On Fire and go straight into Come Together and they are as good as I have ever seen them before, despite the altitude sickness that is surely affecting me by now.

Spiritualized: Bridgewater Hall, Manchester – live review

The end of the set is quite low key, finishing on Sail On Through before coming on for an equally low key So Long You Pretty Thing. There is a pleasing refusal to play by the rules here and to go out with their biggest songs. Spiritualized have always been a band that plays by their own rules and it is pleasing to see that this is still the case.

Over thirty years of Spiritualized gigs has led me to the conclusion that they are one of the best bands Britain has produced and that their ability to sell out larger venues is something that is hard earned and well deserved. We should treasure them, we will never see their like again.

You had to be there. Shine A Light had the tears flowing from my As Fuck eyes. A splendid set from one of the best live bands ever.

Couldn’t agree more. Seen the band many times since 1997 at Glastonbury (a fave gig since). A great experience to see them after a 3-4 year gap and with older eyes, ears and mind…but wow. Not many live bands can take you to the other side like Spiritualized. So good to see different generations, particularly the younger lot, hopefully some first timers who will still have their hearts and mind touched by a truly great band.

Spiritualized - Everything Was Beautiful Album Review

Review of everything was beautiful album by spiritualized.

Spiritualized continue where they left off with their last exquisitely crafted record - And Nothing Hurts , with yet another very impressive offering on their latest album - Everything Was Beautiful . As if carrying out a self fulfilling prophesy, Spiritualized have delivered seven tracks that are indeed incredibly beautiful and extraordinarily compelling. The titles of both the 2018 record, and the latest one, are drawn from a line in Kurt Vonnegut’s 1969 anti-war novel, Slaughterhouse Five - "Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt." You'd find it hard to argue with that after listening to J Spaceman's latest release, or indeed any of Spiritualized's previous eight albums.

https://admin.contactmusic.com/images/home/images/content/spiritualized-everything-was-beautiful-album-cover.jpg

Everything Was Beautiful opens up with the gloriously uplifting sound of last year's lead single - Always Together With You . The song, released in early November, serves as a fabulous introduction to the new record with it's ever building soundtrack and layered harmonies. The 6m38s of Always Together With You creates a wall of sound that is filled with hook laden melodies and sumptuous instrumentation, all beautifully woven together to create an immersive and engrossing experience.

The overall sound that Spiritualized have captured on their new album is the result of a lot of hard graft. Jason Pierce (aka J Spaceman) plays 16 instruments on his new record. It was recorded in 11 different studios, as well as Pierce's home, and has more than 30 musicians who contribute to the final cut, including his daughter Poppy and The Whitechapel Bell Foundry. Pierce says that - "There was so much information on it that the slightest move would unbalance it, but going around in circles is important to me. Not like you’re spiraling out of control but you’re going around and around and on each revolution you hold onto the good each time. Sure, you get mistakes as well, but you hold on to some of those too and that’s how you kind of... achieve. Well, you get there".

Spiritualized second single, and fourth track from the forthcoming album, is altogether a different kind of song. Whereas Always Together With You is a brilliantly reworked version of an older song that ended up becoming a superb slice of "psychedelic pop", Crazy is as near to C&W as Spiritualized have ever gone. The relaxed lilt and carefully crafted male and female harmonies wash over you in a woozy haze as the steel guitar and subtle percussion score the deftly balanced arrangement. Country music singer-songwriter Nikki Lane duets on Crazy and delivers a laid back vocal that perfectly suits the reflective song.

Best Thing You Ever Had takes Spiritualized back to their "space rock" roots with an up tempo, up beat, horn enhanced infusion that brings back memories of early 90's Primal Scream, let alone some of the choice cuts from Spritualized's debut album - Lazer Guided Melodies. Let It Bleed (For Iggy) pulls on your heartstrings with it's intimate opening and awakens your senses with it's intermittent panoramic outbursts and Mainline channels Pierce's musings after watching the protests taking place in the U.S.

The album draws to a monumental 17 minute conclusion with two epic compositions, The A Song (Laid In Your Arms) and I'm Coming Home Again . "These are the words, they're as old as the hills, Cooked on a diet of mushrooms and pills, One man’s crime is another man’s thrill and we’re gone" sings the Spaceman as the triumphant fanfare builds with each note. The pounding percussive beat propels the song forward as a plethora of sounds fuse together to create one furious squall. I'm Coming Home Again slows the pace and eases off on the intensity as Spiritualized sign off Everything Was Beautiful with a majestic and meandering soft shuffle. The initially drowsy vocal, jazz infused beats and sublime sax makes for a heady cocktail of enthralling delights topped out with a very satisfying crescendo.

Everything Was Beautiful is full of wide open spaces, spectacular soundscapes and stunning vistas but Spiritualized's latest record still manages to be intimate, tender and thoroughly absorbing throughout. The attention to every last detail, the inspired instrumentation, agile and adroit production and faultless arrangements make EWK an essential listen.

The song, about having a character with a serious monkey on his back, was an appropriately harsh interruption of an otherwise ...
