Business visa may be issued for a period not exceeding 90 days to foreign nationals who wish to enter in the United Republic of Tanzania for one of the following purposes:

  • The maximum validity for business Visa is 90 days;
  • Business Visa is issued on a single entry basis. It cannot be used to re-enter the country after the holder leaves the country;
  • The Business Visa should not be taken as a substitute for Residence Permit. If for any reason, the activity or assignment for which the guest comes will exceed 3 months, then a guest is advised to obtain Residence Permit instead of Business Visa

Multiple Visa may be issued to American nationals (due to bilateral agreements between Tanzania and America) who wish to come for such purposes like Holiday/Tourism, visiting friends and relatives or attending a conference, as they are not entitled for Ordinary Visa. This implies that, USA passport holders who visit Tanzania for tourism or holiday MUST apply for Multiple Visa even If they come for single entry.

For American nationals who wish to come for business purposes, they are advised to read the Business Visa Section above.

Multiple Visa may also be issued to Directors of Companies registered in Tanzania who do not reside in the country, Persons engaged in Bilateral Meetings, Spouses married to Tanzanians/Residents, Government Consultants, Representatives of International NGOs and any other person as may be determined by the Commissioner General of Immigration or Commissioner of Immigration Zanzibar.

However, Non Resident Directors MUST upload proof showing they are Directors of Company registered in Tanzania. The required proof in this regard is a document from BRELA (This is the Competent Authority responsible for registration of companies in Tanzania) and the document name is called BRELA SEARCH. Therefore, the applicant (in this regard Director) should consult his company and obtain this document to be uploaded in his Online Application for multiple Visa.

Applicants who apply for Multiple Visa under the umbrella of projects or bilateral meetings with the Government Ministries or Institutions, should obtain a covering letter from respective Government Ministries or Institutions, and upload such letters in their applications. Failure to observe this procedure may render their applications to be rejected.

Applicants for Multiple Visa under family visit category are required to upload proof of relationships with their family members. In this case, certificate of marriage (for proof of relationship with regards to spouses) or birth certificates (for proof of relationship with regard to children) is required.

Multiple Visa may be issued with a validity of maximum 12 months. However, the maximum stay duration is three months. Applicants from this category MUST submit their Visa applications Online, and should wait until their applications are approved before starting their journey. These applicants are further advised to submit their applications at least 1 month before their travel date. Having an invitation letter or a request letter for visa from the Host is an added credibility of their application. This letter, if available MUST be uploaded in the Online Visa Application and NOT to be sent by email as a separate document. The letter may be uploaded separately or merged with the Itinerary of the Trip and uploaded in the Return ticket field.

If the Visa is approved, the holder MUST come with the actual return ticket upon arrival. Tanzania travel requirements

If you’re planning a trip to Tanzania, it’s important to know the travel requirements before you go. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you prepare for your journey:

COVID-19 Requirements

  • Visa Requirements
  • Health Insurance

Culture and Etiquette

You do not need to show a COVID vaccination certificate or negative COVID test to enter Tanzania.

Health officials may screen you for COVID symptoms on arrival. They may also randomly select travellers for rapid antigen testing.

Visa requirements

Passport validity.

If you are visiting Tanzania, your passport should be valid for 6 months from the date you arrive.

If you are a resident in Tanzania, your passport must be valid for 6 months from the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider to make sure your passport and other travel documents meet their requirements.

Most foreign passport holders need a tourist or business visa to enter Tanzania. Tanzania has introduced an ‘e-visas’ system through which applications can be submitted and approved online in advance of travel. It is no longer possible to get a visa from the Tanzanian High Commission.

Visa-Exempt Countries:

Health insurance.

When traveling to Tanzania, it is essential to have comprehensive health insurance that will cover any medical expenses   incurred while abroad. Tanzanian healthcare facilities can be of varying standards, and private hospitals tend to be expensive, especially for foreign nationals. In the event of an emergency, it’s crucial to have reliable health insurance to avoid being   stuck with a hefty medical bill or being denied treatment due to lack of funds.

Moreover, the risk of contracting an illness or experiencing an accident while traveling is always present, and being prepared   with a valid health insurance policy is the best way to ensure that you receive adequate medical care. Travelling without   health insurance is simply not worth the risk, as it can lead to unforeseen financial hardship during an already stressful   situation.

In Tanzania, medical treatment for serious conditions can require medical evacuation to neighboring countries, such as Kenya or

South Africa, and this can be incredibly expensive. With reliable health insurance in place, visitors can be assured that they   can access the necessary medical treatment that they need without any significant financial strain. Thus, the peace of mind   that comes with having comprehensive health insurance during your travels to Tanzania is essential to enjoy your holiday, remain safe, and avoid any disruptions caused by unexpected medical expenses.

Tanzania’s currency is the Tanzanian Shilling ( TZS ) . It’s relatively easy to exchange foreign currency at banks, exchange   bureaus, and authorized Forex dealers in tourist areas, major towns, and cities. US Dollars are widely accepted throughout the   country, especially by safari operators, lodges, and other tourist services. However, be aware that most places will only   accept notes printed after 2006 and in good condition, while some establishments may refuse to accept $ 100 bills or give you a   lower exchange rate on them.

If you prefer to use your credit card while traveling in Tanzania, then it’s best to carry one that has a Visa or Mastercard   logo. Most of Tanzania’s high-end hotels, tour companies, restaurants, and shops accept credit cards, but smaller   establishments in rural areas may not. Bear in mind that many Tanzanian businesses will add a 3 – 5 % surcharge for credit card   transactions, so it can be a good idea to carry cash as a backup.

Overall, it’s advisable to carry both Tanzanian Shillings and US dollars in cash when traveling to Tanzania. You can exchange   your foreign currency for Tanzanian Shillings at banks and Forex bureaus or withdraw money from ATMs. Nevertheless, be sure to   notify your bank that you will be traveling to Tanzania before your trip to ensure uninterrupted access to your funds while    abroad.

Tanzania is a culturally diverse country with over 120 tribes, and it’s essential to be respectful of local customs and   traditions. Tanzanians are generally warm and friendly people who value hospitality and appreciate visitors who show an   interest in their culture. When interacting with locals, it’s important to greet them appropriately. Handshakes are the most   common form of greeting in Tanzania, and it’s customary to use the right hand when shaking hands or passing something to   someone. It’s also advised to use appropriate titles like Mr., Mrs., or Doctor when addressing someone.

In Tanzania, modest clothing is the norm, particularly in rural areas or when visiting religious sites. Women should avoid   wearing revealing clothing, particularly shorts or revealing tops, to show respect for local customs and avoid unwanted   attention. Additionally, public displays of affection between couples are frowned upon, so consider being discreet about   physical affection while in public.

When visiting someone’s home or a local community, it’s customary to remove your shoes before entering. You may also be offered food and drink during visits, and it’s customary to accept these offers to show appreciation and respect for local hospitality.

When eating, use your right hand to eat or pass food and avoid allowing your feet to point towards anyone, as this is   considered disrespectful.

Overall, being respectful of local customs and practicing a few basic cultural norms will go a long way towards fostering good   relationships between travelers and Tanzanians. By being mindful of local traditions and etiquette, visitors can gain a deeper   appreciation for Tanzanian culture and have a more fulfilling experience while exploring this fascinating country.

Citizens of the following countries and territories can visit Tanzania without a visa for up to 3 months :

Health insurance

When traveling to Tanzania, it is crucial to prioritize your health and well-being by obtaining comprehensive health insurance coverage. While Tanzania has healthcare facilities available, the standards can vary, and the costs of medical treatment, especially for foreign nationals, can be significant.

To safeguard yourself against unforeseen medical expenses and ensure access to quality healthcare, it is essential to have reliable health insurance coverage. In the event of an illness, injury, or medical emergency, having adequate insurance will provide you with the peace of mind that you can receive necessary medical care without incurring exorbitant costs.

Health insurance not only covers medical treatment but also offers additional benefits such as emergency medical evacuation, which can be crucial in situations where you may require transportation to a more advanced medical facility or back to your home country for specialized treatment.

It is important to carefully review the terms and conditions of your health insurance policy to understand the extent of coverage, including outpatient care, hospitalization, prescription medications, and emergency services. Ensure that your policy includes coverage for medical evacuation, as this can be a significant expense if required.

In Tanzania, the local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). It is relatively easy to exchange foreign currency at banks, exchange bureaus, and authorized Forex dealers located in tourist areas, major towns, and cities throughout the island.

US Dollars are widely accepted in Tanzania, especially in hotels, resorts, and larger establishments. It is advisable to carry smaller denomination notes as larger bills may not always be accepted, or you may receive a lower exchange rate for them. Euros are also accepted in some places, although to a lesser extent compared to US Dollars.

Credit cards are accepted at many hotels, restaurants, and larger businesses in popular tourist areas. It is recommended to carry a credit card with a Visa or Mastercard logo, as these are widely recognized. However, it is important to note that some smaller establishments, local markets, and rural areas may not accept credit cards. It is always a good idea to carry some cash as a backup, particularly when venturing into more remote regions.

For currency exchange, banks and Forex bureaus are reliable options, and ATMs are available in major towns and tourist areas. However, it is advisable to inform your bank of your travel plans in advance to ensure that your debit or credit cards will work seamlessly while in Tanzania.

To make your transactions smoother, it is recommended to carry a combination of local currency (Tanzanian Shilling) and some US Dollars or Euros in cash. This will provide you with flexibility and convenience when paying for goods, services, or local experiences throughout your stay in Tanzania.

Remember to keep your money secure and be cautious when handling cash or making transactions in crowded areas. It is advisable to store your cash, cards, and important documents in a safe place, such as a hotel safe, and to carry only the amount of cash you need for the day.

By being prepared with the appropriate currency and payment methods, you can enjoy a hassle-free and enjoyable experience while exploring the enchanting island of Tanzania.

Tanzania is a culturally vibrant destination with a rich blend of traditions and customs. When visiting this enchanting island, it is important to respect and appreciate the local culture. Tanzanians are known for their warm hospitality, and showing an interest in their customs will undoubtedly enhance your experience.

Greetings are an essential part of Tanzanian culture. It is customary to greet locals with a handshake, and it is polite to use appropriate titles such as Mr., Mrs., or Doctor when addressing someone. Taking the time to exchange pleasantries and inquire about each other’s well-being is greatly appreciated.

Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or rural areas. Both men and women are encouraged to cover their shoulders and knees. Wearing lightweight, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics is ideal for the tropical climate of Tanzania.

Public displays of affection should be avoided, as they are not traditionally practiced or considered appropriate in Tanzanian culture. Respecting personal space and refraining from intimate gestures in public will help ensure cultural sensitivity.

When visiting local homes or communities, it is customary to remove your shoes before entering as a sign of respect. Tanzanians often offer food and drinks to their guests, and accepting these offers with gratitude is customary to show appreciation for their hospitality.

Tanzanians have a rich culinary heritage, and sampling local dishes is a delightful way to immerse yourself in the culture. Remember to eat with your right hand, as using the left hand is considered impolite. It is also customary to avoid pointing your feet at others, as this is considered disrespectful.

By embracing and respecting the local customs and cultural practices of Tanzania, you will create meaningful connections and foster a positive cultural exchange during your visit. Showcasing your interest and appreciation for the unique traditions of this captivating island will enrich your journey and leave a lasting impression.

Measles cases are increasing globally, including in the United States. The majority of measles cases imported into the United States occur in unvaccinated U.S. residents who become infected during international travel. A list of countries with confirmed measles outbreaks can be found on the Global Measles Travel Health Notice (THN) . Measles spreads rapidly in communities that are not fully vaccinated and may pose a risk to international travelers in places not included in the THN. CDC recommends all travelers get fully vaccinated against measles before traveling to any international destination.
