One day in the Hague: An resident’s itinerary to a perfect day trip to the Hague

April 10, 2018 by Karen Turner 10 Comments

You might have heard of the Hague. The Hague is the former capital of the Netherlands as well as my home. Quite a few friends have asked about taking a day trip from Amsterdam to the Hague and what to do in one day in the Hague. Here’s my resident’s guide to one day in the Hague with the perfect itinerary for exploring the Hague on foot. I include a self-guided walking tour with a map to help you see the best of the Hague.

The Hague is often overlooked by visitors to the Netherlands as well as local visitors as there’s a perception that it’s boring and there’s not much to do in the Hague.  Since moving here, I have to disagree and I must say the Hague is a beautiful culture-rich city with a lot to do/see.

I’ve tried to highlight my favorites in this one day itinerary to the Hague, but you can read more tips for visiting the Hague here . If you’re looking for a good base for your trip to the Netherlands , the Hague is only forty minutes from Amsterdam , fifteen minutes from Delft , and thirty minutes from Rotterdam.    You can read about more day trips from Amsterdam here .

Map of my self-guided walking tour of the Hague at the bottom!

Take the train to Den Haag HS or Den Haag Centraal

People are often confused by the train stations in the Hague.  There’s two main stations as well as a handful of stations around the Hague.  Depending on where you’re coming from, you’ll stop off at Den Haag HS (Hollands Spoor) or Den Haag Centraal .

the hague self walking tour

Den Haag HS is the oldest railroad station in the Netherlands dating back to the 1800s and there’s a secret waiting room where the King of the Netherlands can only access.  I find the station particularly beautiful, so be sure to admire it for a moment.

Both stations are fine to get off at and both are about the same (ish) distance from the historic center of the Hague.  If you’re not as keen on walking, I think that Den Haag Centraal makes it easier to find the trams that go directly into center. That said, I think that you’ll find better breakfast options near Den Haag HS.  I start this self-guided walking tour of the Hague close to Den Haag HS, but you can easily start it wherever you want.

  • Pim Coffee & Vintage
  • Scally’s
  • Bagels & Beans

Food at Club Vers, one of the best places for breakfast in the Hague. Read more tips for visiting the Hague with the perfect itinerary for the Hague! #DenHaag #TheHague #travel #holland

If you’re looking for some of the best breakfast options in the Hague, you really need to look close to Den Haag HS as my favorite breakfast places in the Hague are here.  Club Vers  is perfect for those who love to eat healthy and/or have dietary restrictions. I absolutely love their creative healthy waffles.

For coffee and a little treat in the morning, I recommend the pastries at  Pim Coffee & Vintage , an adorable cafe with fantastic coffee (veggie friendly) and amazing cakes.  Click for my guide to the best brunch and breakfast in the Hague.

For the full English breakfast, check out  Scally’s for a ridiculously reasonable full English breakfast (they call it the Scallywich) and/or authentic British scones with a lot of character (think giant portraits of William & Kate).  Otherwise, Bagels & Beans (by Spui) is an easy option.  For just coffee, read my post of the best cafes in the Hague.

The Hague has the largest Chinatown in the Netherlands partially due to immigration after World War II and although this whole neighborhood surprises a lot of people who visit, you can find some great Chinese food here.

As you might have already had breakfast, I recommend stopping off for Bubble Tea. My favorite flavor is with mango or apple and I love the bubbles that pop in your mouth.

Photo of bottles of jenever/genever at Van Kleef Distillery, one of the best places to visit in the Hague during one day in the Hague. Get insider tips for what to do during one day in the Hague! #travel #Netherlands #jenever #genever #Nederland #alcohol #DenHaag #TheHague #Holland

Van Kleef Distillery i s the oldest and only remaining distillery located in the Hague. This historic distillery dating back to the 1800s is not producing liquors at the location itself anymore due to the risk of fire, however it’s worth stepping into this stunning historic shop for a tasting.

For fifty cents, you can try a number of different types of traditional Dutch alcohols .  I know that it’s early, but I especially love the Voorburg spirit as well as the Kruide Baggah. They accept credit cards.

The Passage is a UNESCO recognized building in the Hague.  This shopping arcade predates the covered passages in Paris  and it has some architecturally distinct qualities. I just enjoy walking through this stunning passage and stopping for a coffee at a cozy cafe .

Photo of the Binnenhof, one of the main attractions in the Hague that you can't miss on your Hague itinerary. Read tips by a resident on what to do with one day in the Hague with an itinerary for the Hague. #netherlands #Nederland #denhaag #thehague #holland

The Binnenhof is where Dutch parliament is located. Although the capital of the Netherlands is now in Amsterdam, many of the government buildings remain in the Hague.  The Binnenhof was originally a mansion owned by Count Floris IV in 1229, which stands next to the lake that you still see today.  Starting in 1446, this building as used for Dutch Parliament and under the occupations of the Netherlands by other countries, the Binnenhof grew into the beautiful castle that it is today.

If you’re on bike or on foot, you can actually walk through the Binnenhof 24/7, which is so cool.  It’s a stunning building and it’s free to admire, so be sure to explore it.  Even on a rainy day, you’ll find some shade underneath the corridors.

Walk along Noordeinde

Korte Molenstraat, one of the cutest streets in the Hague. Read a resident's guide to the Hague with a complete itinerary, what to do in the Hague in one day, and what to know about taking a day trip to the Hague. #TheHague #DenHaag #Holland #Travel #Netherlands #Netherlands #Europe

Noordeinde is the heart of the historic part of the Hague.  This road leads to the King’s Palace and I love veering off this road for all the adorable shops in the Hague.  (I especially love stopping into the de filosoof to browse for wine and pet their cat.)  It’s just a beautiful street and you’ll understand almost immediately once you’re here.  I also love the archway by Korte Molenstraat.

If you’re visiting the Hague on a Friday or Saturday afternoon (between 1 and 4pm ), you can stop into  Kloosterbrouwerij Haagsche Broeder , a Catholic order who makes their own beer and sells it out of their cloister.

The beer is first-rate and the monks are actually delightful to talk too.  (They speak English as well and one of them is American.)  I realize that you have to get kind of lucky to have your one day in the Hague overlap with their hours, but you can go to any of the bars down the street to buy a bottle to enjoy at the bar (including De Oude Mol ) if you miss their hours.

Noordeinde Palace in the Hague is one of the best things to do in the Hague. Read an insider's guide to what to do in the Hague, the Netherlands! #royal #holland #palace #europe #thehague #denhaag #netherlands #nederland

Noordeinde Palace is where the Dutch King’s office is located.  Yes, you read that right.  In the Netherlands, the Dutch King works on behalf of the government and he commutes to work.  You can tell if the King is in the palace if the flag is up.

Walk down Lange Voorhout & Hooikade

Korte Langhout is something that you can't miss during one day in the Hague. This beautiful street is a must see. See the complete itinerary for the Hague written by a resident. #Den Haag #TheHague #Netherlands #Holland #Travel #Europe

Before you leave this area, be sure to enjoy the stunning views of the Binnenhof close to the Hofvijver, the lake next to the Binnenhof.  In spring, you’ll find lots of flowers here, making the view of the Binnenhof only more beautiful.  Then, make a left to turn onto Lange Voorhout.

This spacious avenue used to be where to be seen if you were nobility.  Be sure to walk down Hooikade to view the prettiest canal in the Hague.  Then, admire the antique shops along Denneweg.

Lunch at FOAM or Pizzeria II Vesuvio

Stop for lunch at FOAM for a fresh, organic, and meat-free meal. FOAM is a healthy lunch place, perfect for getting a fresh salad or a healthy sandwich.  It’s super vegan-friendly and pretty affordable considering the high quality of the ingredients.

The atmosphere is quite nice, so make a reservation if you want to come here on a Saturday as it can be busy. For something a bit less healthy, stop at Pizzeria II Vesuvio for some fresh pizza at one of the best pizza places in the Hague. (They have vegan cheese! Sorry for the healthy obsession, but I’m lactose-intolerant and I  try to eat healthy.)

The Peace Palace, one of the most beautiful places in the Hague to visit. Read a local's guide to the Hague with tips on the best things to do in the Hague. #UN #travel #Nederland #Netherlands #holland #denhaag #thehague #europe

Afterward, stop off at the Peace Palace.  Getting a tour of the Peace Palace is fairly difficult and I detail how to get a tour of the Peace Palace here, but you can definitely admire one of the most beautiful buildings in the Hague.  Built in the 1920s by all different countries, the Peace Palace is a stunning building, even from a distance.  Even if you can’t get a tour, you can admire it by the gates.

Visiting Holland? The best things to do in the Hague written by a resident with 30+ tips on what to do in the Hague!

If you’re interested in art, consider taking the tram back or walking back to the Mauritshuis to enjoy the rest of the afternoon enjoying one of the best art museums in the Netherlands.  You can see the Girl with the Pearl Earring as well as the Goldfinch here, so be sure to enjoy these Dutch masterpieces.  If you’re a fan of Vermeer, it’s also possible to visit Delft on a day trip as Delft is only fifteen minutes by train.

Scheveningen is one of the best things to do during one day in the Hague. Read a resident's guide to the best things to do in the Hague! #travel #TheHague #Holland #Scheveningen #Nederland

If it’s a beautiful summer day, consider taking the tram out to Scheveningen, the most popular beach resort in the Netherlands.  it’s a bit too far to walk, however you can hop onto a bus/tram towards Scheveningen.  Click for my guide to Scheveningen.

I recommend seeing the stunning Kurhaus as well as the Scheveningen Pier.  It’s just lovely to sit out along the beach with a cold drink while enjoying the views on a nice day.  I’m not even a beach person, but a recent trip with some friends to the beach have convinced me.

Option 3: City Exploring on foot

If you’re interested in staying in the Hague, I have a longer walking route through the Hague that will show off the most interesting neighborhoods in the Hague.  If you’re into city exploring, this itinerary for the Hague is for you.

The Zeeheldenkwartier is one of the coolest neighborhoods in the Hague.  Complete with lots of antique shops, cozy cafes, and picturesque houses, the neighborhood is just fun to walk through.  I recommend walking along Prins Hendrikstraat or Piet Heinstraat.  Both have lots of unique cafes, including the Hague’s only cat cafe.

Photo of a hofje in the Hague. If you have only one day in the Hague, be sure to stop off at a hofje. For more insider tips on what to do in the Hague, click for the perfect itinerary for one day in the Hague if you take a day trip to the Hague! #thehague #denhaag #holland #Netherlands #travel

The Hague has many hofjes, which are historic almshouses where those in need would be houses. Originally these were funded by private donors, however the hofjes in the Hague that exist today were created by the city government. Click for my secret guide to the Hague with more hofjes!

My favorite hofje in the Hague is a bit tricky to access, so I encourage you to step into the historic courtyard of  Het Hooftshofje .  The door is typically open during the day, so please be considerate/quiet as this is private property.

Photo of the Haagse Markt, one of the markets in the Hague. Read the perfect itinerary for the Hague with tips on what to do during one day in the Hague when taking a day trip from Amsterdam to the Hague. #thehague #holland #travel

The Haagse Markt started in the 1920s.  This historic market is one of my favorite markets in the Netherlands.  It’s quite different than many others that you’ll encounter as it’s mostly locals grocery shopping and buying household goods.  (Bring cash if you want to shop here.) I love all the shouting and yelling of the vendors–and the whole experience of doing my weekly grocery shopping here.  Be sure to stop off for fresh stroopwafel and frites.

Note: You’ll probably want to bike or take a bus/tram back towards center after visiting the Haagse Markt as it’s a bit out of the way.  The Haagse Markt is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

You have so many great dinner options in the Hague. Moving here, I thought that the Hague would be boring and typically Dutch, however it is one of the most diverse cities in the Netherlands partially due to the fact that most of the embassies in the Netherlands are here in the Hague. As a result, you can try food from all over the world in the Hague.  Click for a guide to my favorite affordable restaurants in the Hague.

Dinner at Bleyenberg, one of the places to eat in the Hague during one day in the Hague. Read the perfect itinerary for the Hague written by a resident!

Bleyenberg is a modern Dutch restaurant right along Grote Markt, the main going out square in the Hague.  The interior is absolutely stunning and I was really impressed with the quality of the food.  Although I generally find Dutch food uninspiring, I was inspired by the flavors in the dish that I didn’t expect. They have an English menu and it’s best to make a reservation if you want to come here for dinner. Price: $$

Warung Bude Kati  is my favorite Indonesian restaurant in the Hague. This cozy family-run restaurant has some seating although it fills up quickly on the weekends. The portions are huge  and the prices are extremely reasonable.  I try a different dish almost every time that I come here and a friend who grew up in Indonesia was really impressed with how authentic the food is.  The owners are super friendly although be warned that it’s Maestro or cash only. Price: $

Warung Mini is a Javanese-Surinamese restaurant on your way back to Den Haag Centraal or HS.  This cozy and popular restaurant is definitely more casual, but it has the most famous Surinamese food in the Hague. ( Click to read more about Surinamese food and what to order here !)

Be warned that if you ask for spicy, it will be very spicy.  The prices are really affordable here, so expect to pay less than ten euros for a massive meal.  Note: They’re halal, so no beer. Price: $

I have a few favorite places to get drinks in the Hague.  All are close to the city center, but closer to the train station, perfect for a nightcap before you head out of the Hague.

Syndicaat is a vintage-inspired cocktail speakeasy in the heart of Chinatown.  Hidden behind a secret door, you’ll find the entrance to this lovely little bar, which has jazz music on weekends.  The cocktails are made with Van Kleef gin, so you can’t go wrong with a bespoke cocktail here!

De Paas is my favorite beer bar in the Hague.  This cozy brown bar along Bierkade has a great selection of local beer, knowledgeable bartenders, and a cozy atmosphere.  It’s quiet here with minimal music.  In summer, you can sit out on the boat in the canal to enjoy your beer. What else could you want? ( Click for more beer cafes in the Hague .)

Where to stay in the Hague

If you choose to stay overnight in the Hague, you’ll find lots of affordable options, especially compared to Amsterdam.  For the fanciest hotel in the Hague, stay at the historic Hotel des Indes to rub shoulders with visiting royalty.  For a modern boutique hotel, consider staying at Hotel Indigo in the heart of Noordeinde.  For something budget yet clean hotel, stay at the Student Hotel , which isn’t only for students.  There’s also a few hostels in the Hague .

I work in The Hague quite regularly, as a lot of my clients are based there. It’s a lovely city. My friend lives in the middle of China town and I love exploring all the shops and restaurants there, it’s like a mini-vacation.

thank you so much for writing this! I’m planning to visit for one day in early August, as I wrap up my visit in Amsterdam. Can you tell me if there are souvenirs available that are specific to the parliament? I am a nerd and like to collect pens from different government agencies. 🙂 Thanks again!

Hi Twylia, If you do a tour of the parliament, it might be possible to get a pen. I visited last year and was given a pen as it was a special event, but you might get one if you ask. I did see fancier pens on sale there, but I’m not sure how typical that is. I hope that you have a great trip and get your pen!

I have tickets on October to see the Nederlands Dans Theatre at the Zuiderstrandtheater. I am planning on staying at the Hotel Des Indes (-or possibly the Paleis Hotel), Could you tell me the best way to get to the theatre and return on a Friday evening? Approximately how long does it take to get there? Thank you so much for your help — and your blog. I am really enjoying it, as you can see by the question and my previous one about the International Criminal Court.

Hi Dianna, you can check Google Maps for the tram/bus schedule. I’d guess 20-30 minutes although you could always rent a bike if you want to try it out: https://localholland.com/the-hague/services-in-the-hague/rent-bike-hague/

Alternatively, a taxi is always possible. Glad to hear that!

Karen, I was delighted to find this information to help me get from Amsterdam to the Hague, My reason for this visit is to trace family history, My father was born in the Hague and lived there until he was 13 when he moved with his family to NYC where my grandfather was going to be a professor at Columbia Univ. I have the addresses where he lived so I plan to visit those. I had been to the Hague as a child with my parents so am just interested this time in wandering around a seeing some highlights. I will be staying at the Marriott for the night. Then need to get to Schipol airport for an evening flight

December 30, 2019 at 12:43 am

Hi Brenda, I hope that you have a fantastic trip retracing your father’s steps! It’s a lovely city and I hope that you find what you’re hoping for. There is a city archive (https://www.denhaag.nl/en/municipality-of-the-hague/municipal-organisation/the-hague-city-archives.htm) that might be good to contact in advance if you are looking for anything specific. Enjoy! -Karen

The Hague Old Town – Binnenhof

When you visit the Hague, the Binnenhof (Inner Court) of the Dutch Parliament dominates the lake at the center of the Hague Old Town. The Binnenhof was started in the 1200s and includes the Ridderzaal (Hall of Knights). Take a guided tour with ProDemos . Right beside the Binnenhof at the eastern end of the lake is the Mauritshuis (Royal Cabinet of Paintings). The famous Girl with a Pearl Earring by Vermeer is on display at the Maruitshuis. The Town Square and the pedestrian streets leading from it are found immediately south of the Mauritshuis. The Prison Gate Museum  is located at the western edge of the lake and is devoted to the history of crime and punishment.

Visit the Hague – Old Town

You can start a visit to the Hague Old Town from the Hague Central Train Station. One place to begin is Lange Voorhout street. Check out The Hague Walking Tour Map . The Escher Museum features the works of M.C. Eshcer. The Escher Museum is part of the former Winter Palace of Queen Mother Emma of the Netherlands.

Hotel des Indes is on the corner beside the Escher Museum. Hotel des Indes is part of the palace complex built in the 1850s. The hotel has been operating for more than a hundred years. The bright yellow exterior clashes with its ornate interior.

Hotel des Indes, Visit the Hague

Hotel des Indes

A couple of doors to the west when you visit the Hague Old Town is the Supreme Court of the Netherlands. It is very hard to pick out and is not open to the public. If you walk around the block to the back, the building changes to a modern one with life size seated bronze sculptures of judges presiding pompously over a small parking lot. A bit bizarre both in appearance and in the fact that it’s hidden from the public so well.

Day Trips from the Hague

  • Delft Pottery Factory Tour – Delft is about 20 minutes southeast of the Hague. Blue hand painted tin-glazed earthenware made Delft famous. The only original surviving delft pottery factory from the 1600s is Royal Delft. The tour visits the Delftse Pauw factory, which produces more recent pottery, but in the same style. Don’t confuse this with the picturesque area of Rotterdam known as Delfshaven.
  • Travel 40 minutes south to Rotterdam .
  • Travel an hour north to Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse – the premier garden stop in the Netherlands. Sorry, but the gardens are only open in the spring, when the tulips bloom. Read about a visit to the Keukenhof Gardens in our Amsterdam Layover blog.

The Hague Weather

The North Sea provides a heavy influence on the Hague weather. That makes the Hague weather cool in summer and usually near freezing in winter. The height of summer is July and August when average highs reach 70 F (21 C), while lows average 56 F (13 C). From December to February, the winter highs average about 44 F (6 C) with lows just above freezing. Rainfall is spread fairly evenly throughout the year, but is slightly lower in April and May. Visiting in the first week of May provides an opportunity for good weather and for catching the end of the tulip season.

Get to the Hague

Rotterdam The Hague Airport (RTM) is located south of the Hague, nearer to Rotterdam. This airport isn’t nearly as big as Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, so air passengers are more likely to arrive in Amsterdam and take the train to get to the Hague.

There are two train stations in the downtown area. The Hague Central Station (Den Haag Centraal) connects to Amsterdam, while the Hague Holland Spoor (Den Haag HS) connects passengers to Rotterdam. If you are traveling between Amsterdam and Rotterdam, your train will stop at both stations. The Hague Central Station is located in the heart of the Old Town.

The transportation system within the Hague is run by HTM . The city also has an extensive network of bicycle lanes.

I've wandered the world for years. Now I'd like to take you around in my home town. The Hague has so many different sides; the liveliness of a city, contrasted with great beaches and parks. Although I know a lot about this village (Yes! It's a village!), I am always learning, and discovering new fun facts and places of interest. I'm great at connecting the past and the present, and finding a connection with visitors from home and abroad. My tours are all about enjoying The Hague and learning about life in The Netherlands. And altough I have been a guide for quite some years, I always look forward to meet my guests. Hope you will join soon!

the hague self walking tour

After years of proudly presenting the hidden gems of The Hague as a guide, by foot, bike or boat, I took a special interest in the mostly unknown parts of Scheveningen. Well connected but still very much on its own, this fishing village shows its uniqueness best away from the boulevard. Walking or cycling right next to the trawlers in the harbour, through the tiny streets and alleys of the village, off to the sandy and green beauty of the dunes makes for a great journey. My collegues nick named me the Walking Encyclopedia, I love connecting stories and facts of The Hague, Scheveningen and beyond .You are warmly invited to join me on one of my tours!

Although a native Canadian, I've adopted this city as my new home some years ago. As a student of International Relations and Diplomacy, The Hague really is the place to be! I love walking around and discovering new spots or checking out the events happening around the city. One of my favourite places is Grote Markt, but I also like Lange Voorhout with all its fairs (especially the food fairs!).

I love to talk about the history of The Hague, what made it the international city of Peace and Justice, what makes it a great place to live and of course, a bit about love of Dutch culture!

We hit all the highlights and hotspots!

Marvelous Murals in the City: Take a Self-Guided Walking Tour or Join the Belltown Art Walk on September 13

A large mural with blue water and white flowers, with two artists working on the art on the side of a large building, on a sunny day.

Blog stats: 800 words | 4-minute read

At-a-glance:

  • More than 30 new murals have come to life in and around Downtown Seattle, from Belltown to SODO to the Chinatown-International District.
  • Created by skilled artists, the murals are a new public amenity we want people to discover, engage with, and enjoy.
  • You can see them first-hand via a self-guided walking tour. Earlier this week, we installed new decals on sidewalks in Belltown to highlight a walking route ( see more details below ).
  • You can also join the next Belltown Art Walk on Friday, September 13 from 6 to 9 PM, taking place throughout the Belltown neighborhood. No advanced registration is required.
  • The Downtown Mural Project is made possible by the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture and its Hope Corps program which provides funding grants to support artists and community-based organizations.
  • This initiative is part of Mayor Harrell’s Downtown Activation Plan to revitalize and reinvigorate the greater Downtown Seattle area.

Mural enthusiasts, this is your time – come down to Belltown and enjoy some of Seattle’s newest and finest public art in the heart of the city. Here’s how you can participate.

A mural is painted onto a large stairway in the city, with tall buildings, trees, and water visible in the background. Black pavement is visible to the lower right corner.

Attend the Belltown Art Walk on September 13

Taking place the second Friday of every month, the Belltown Art Walk is a great way to check out art in Belltown first-hand, including the new murals.

You can participate this Friday, September 13 from 6 to 9 PM throughout Belltown.

It’s a free, self-guided, all-ages event hosted by a volunteer- and donations-driven nonprofit charity serving artists, the community, and the Belltown neighborhood.

You can also check out the art at a gallery show titled ‘Walls Out’ which is located at Base Camp Studios 2 (formerly Bergman Luggage) in Downtown Seattle. The gallery display is open through Saturday, September 14. Learn more online here .

Take a walking tour anytime

Feeling more independent? You can enjoy the murals on your own schedule via a new walking route we’ve laid out in Belltown. Check out the short video, map, and sidewalk decal shown below – all of which can help you easily find your way to enjoy the murals.

Map showing the locations of more than a dozen murals in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood, around 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th avenues between Clay St to the north and Lenora St to the south. The walking route is shown with a dotted blue line, and the mural locations are shown in orange stars.

How to get downtown by transit

We encourage you to consider taking transit to reach the murals in Belltown and Downtown Seattle. Downtown is served by Link light rail and buses from all over Seattle and the region.

To plan your trip, visit Sound Transit’s trip planner , King County Metro’s trip planner , or other tools like Google Maps or OneBusAway to find the most convenient transit route for you.

You can also consider biking, scooting, walking, or rolling if it works for your trip. Learn more on our Bike and Scooter Share website .

More about the artists

Local artists are at the core of this work. Their talents and creative inspiration have brought the new art to life. Here are a few photos highlighting several of the artists behind the new murals.

We encourage you to read more here about artists participating in the Downtown Mural Project – and check out more of their work.

A woman smiles into the camera while standing in front of a large mural showing a waterfall, trees, and other plants. She is wearing a hat, scarf, and black sweatshirt.

More about the Downtown Activation Plan

Seattle’s Downtown Activation Plan is a roadmap to revitalize and transform Downtown Seattle now and for the future. You can find more details in this blog post from Mayor Harrell .

“Our Downtown Activation Plan includes a strong focus on making neighborhoods vibrant, engaging, and welcoming, including through an expansion of murals and public art. Through this festival and the new murals in Belltown, we hope residents and visitors will visit Downtown to see the creative and innovative spirit of our city, as well as come together, connect, and see themselves as part of Seattle’s tapestry,” – Mayor Bruce Harrell

Thanks for your interest. We hope you enjoy checking out the murals with your family, friends, or coworkers in the days ahead.

Paris’ Latin Quarter Walking Tour

Start this Paris’ Latin Quarter walking tour from Place Saint-Michel , which can be reached by metro line 4 / RER B and by getting off at the Saint-Michel Notre Dame station.

1. Place Saint-Michel

Saint-Michel Fountain - Paris

The beautiful Place Saint-Michel is the lively heart of the Latin Quarter, a beloved meeting place for many Parisians. The square as we know it today was part of Baron Haussmann’s restructuring of Paris (1855) to form a suitable bridgehead for the new, wider Pont Saint-Michel, which was rebuilt at the same time as the square.

At the center of the square is an imposing fountain with a bronze statue of Saint-Michel, spectacularly illuminated in the evening. From the square starts a maze of narrow streets packed with traditional boulangeries, delicious brasseries, and charming bookstores.

Standing on Place Saint-Michel, with the Seine River behind you, look to your left and take Rue de la Huchette.

2. Rue de la Huchette

Caveau de la Huchette - Paris

Along Rue de la Huchette , there are three spots worth a short stop: Rue du Chat-qui-Pêche (perpendicular to this street), Le Caveau de la Huchette (#5), and Le Theatre de la Huchette (#23).

Le Caveau de la Huchette has an interesting history that goes back to medieval times, and it is best known for being the first club in Paris where jazz was played. No one at the Caveau de la Huchette will ever forget Sidney Bechet’s colossal jam sessions! Still today, a jazz band performs every evening.

The Rue du Chat-qui-Pêche takes its current name from an eponymous sign, which has since disappeared from the city’s landscape. Large 1,80 m, this is the narrowest street in Paris.

The Théâtre de la Huchette is a small theatre (85 seats) known for playing Eugène Ionesco’s absurdist double-bill of The Lesson and The Bald Soprano in permanent repertory since 1957. Today, a third play is presented, and this changes from time to time.

In 5 minutes, you will arrive at the next stop of this Latin Quarter free walking tour.

3. Shakespeare and Company

Shakespeare & Company

Shakespeare and Company is one of the biggest tourist traps in Paris. Opened in 1951 by Parisian George Whitman, the present Shakespeare and Company is not the original location of this iconic bookstore. The most famous predecessor dates back to the 1920s and was renowned for hosting and publishing the works of literary masters such as James Joyce.

Furnished in perfect English style, Shakespeare and Company is the perfect spot to browse for first editions as well as attend workshops and talks with great writers.

The upcoming stop of the walking tour, Square René Viviani, is right next to Shakespeare and Company, and it is less than 1 minute on foot.

4. Square René Viviani

Square Rene Viviani - Paris

This lovely little square offers breathtaking views of Notre Dame Cathedral and is one of Paris’ most unique gardens.

It houses the oldest tree in the city, the Robinia Pseudoacacia , a locust tree over 400 years old! This astonishing tree was named after Jean Robina, the French botanist who planted it. There is also a (hidden) medieval well.

Robinia Pseudoacacia - Square Rene Viviani

Square René Viviani is the perfect spot to relax in the shade of the Robinia while enjoying some French pastries and admiring the vistas. If you are visiting Paris in December , this square hosts one of the best Christmas Markets in Paris !

Walk to square René Viviani with the Seine River behind your back to get to the Church of Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre at the end of the square.

5. Church of Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre

Saint-Julien-Le-Pauvre Church

One of the oldest churches in Paris, the construction of the Church of Saint Julien-le-Pauvre dates back to the 12th century on the site of a much older chapel.

Built in Romanesque style with elements of primary Gothic, the Church is an interesting building in the religious landscape of Paris, which is mostly made up of Gothic churches.

The site is granted to the Eastern Catholic Melkite community. Inside, don’t miss the iconostasis, built in 1900 by the Byzantine Rite, and the paving stones from the original Roman road connecting Lutetia (Paris) to Orléans.

To reach the next stop, cross Rue du Petit Pont to get to Rue Saint-Julien le Pauvre. Walk this street for 1 minute, and you will find yourself in front of the Church of Saint-Severin.

TIP: Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre is known for its classical music concerts (Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, etc.). You can buy tickets to the concerts here .

6. Church of Saint-Séverin

Saint-Severin Church - Paris

The Church of Saint-Séverin is an outstanding example of Gothic architecture. Listed as a historical monument of France since 1862, the construction of the Church of Saint-Séverin began in the 13th century and was completed only two centuries later.

Step inside and get ready to be mesmerized by the Gothic architecture, the stained-glass windows depicting the martyrdom of St. John the Baptist, and the particularly stunning Tree of Jesse.

Among the Church’s most interesting elements are the double ambulatory, the beautiful twisted column, and a well from the XVth century in the Chapel of the Virgin. It was said that its water could cure fever and certain skin diseases!

During your visit, don’t hesitate to take a tour of the garden (if it is open), which was used from the fifteenth century as a cemetery for Parisian notables.

From the church, proceed southwesterly on Rue des Prêtres Saint-Séverin toward Boulevard Saint-Germain. At this point, turn left on Rue de Cluny and then turn right on Pl. Paul Painlevé to get to the Cluny Museum’s entrance.

7. Cluny Museum

Cluny Museum - Paris

The Cluny Museum is hosted in a gothic-style private mansion that belonged to the Abbot of Cluny, hence the name. This museum displays medieval art and objects and is the perfect place to learn more about the Middle Ages’ culture. The best piece is the La Dame a la Licorne (The Lady and the Unicorn), a 15th-century series of medieval tapestries.

In the Museum’s basement, you can see some remains of Roman Paris , in particular, the thermal baths. There are also the original heads of the Kings of Judah from the façade of Notre Dame Cathedral (they were beheaded during the French Revolution).

To reach the historical building of the Sorbonne University, walk for 2 minutes on Place Paul Painlevé towards Rue du Sommerard.

8. Sorbonne University (Seat of the Rectorate)

La Sorbonne Chapel - Paris

The Latin Quarter owes its name to its academic history, so this next stop of the walking tour is a true must-do.

The Sorbonne University is one of the oldest universities in Europe and one of the most prestigious.

Opened in 1257 as part of the medieval Université de Paris, among Sorbonne University’s famous students are the Italian poet Dante Alighieri and scientist Marie Curie.

Take your time admiring the beautiful architecture of the university’s historical building while soaking up its intellectual atmosphere. Of its reconstruction under Richelieu, only the chapel, the work of Lemercier, remains. In 1822, it became the seat of the Rectorate and the Faculties of Letters and Sciences.

Proceed northwest on Rue des Écoles toward Rue de la Sorbonne. Turn slightly left and take Rue Racine. Once you get to Place Paul Claudel, you will find the Jardin du Luxembourg on your left at 150 meters.

9. Jardin du Luxembourg

Medici Fountain - Luxembourg Gardens

At the outskirts of the Latin Quarter, connecting with the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood , is the stunning Jardin du Luxembourg .

One of the most popular gardens in Paris for locals and tourists alike, the Jardin du Luxembourg was established in 1612 by Marie de Médicis as an extension to the Luxembourg Palace.

This public park has it all: beautiful statues and tall trees. It is indeed the ideal spot for a picnic break in spring and summer.

The Jardin du Luxembourg also has pretty and romantic corners, like the Fontaine Médicis .

Up next for the Latin Quarter walking tour is the Panthéon. Proceed in an easterly direction toward Boulevard Saint-Michel. Walk straight for around 7 minutes, and you will arrive.

10. Panthéon

Panthéon of Paris

Built between 1758 and 1790 on the spot of the Roman Forum (main square), the Panthéon is one of the most famous buildings in Paris . In neoclassical style, the Panthéon was a church constructed by the will of King Louis XV.

It then became a mausoleum to pay tribute to great French citizens, including Victor Hugo, Voltaire, and Marie Curie.

The two distinctive features of the Panthéon are its off-white dome that can be accessed (from April to October) to marvel at breathtaking views of Paris and the giant pendulum that Foucault built to prove the rotation of the Earth.

Facing the Panthéon, take Place du Panthéon on your left. After a couple of minutes, you will get to Church Saint-Etienne-du-Mont.

11. Church Saint-Etienne-du-Mont

Saint-Etienne-du-Mont-Church

A stunning building in Gothic flamboyant style, the Church Saint-Etienne-du-Mont is one of those spots in Paris that not many tourists know about.

Dedicated to the city’s patron saint, Saint-Geneviève, the church has the only remaining rood screen in Paris, featuring carved stone and a double spiral staircase.

Inside, the Church displays stunning stained glass windows and the glass tomb with the remains of the relics of Saint Geneviève, many of which were burned during the French Revolution.

Proceed in an easterly direction on Rue Clovis toward Rue Descartes. Take the first turn to the right to find yourself on Rue Descartes. Go straight for around 5 minutes, and you will be at Rue Mouffetard.

12. Rue Mouffetard

Rue Mouffetard - Paris

After walking and sightseeing a lot, a food stop is mandatory, and Rue Mouffetard is perfect for that. Strolling up and down Rue Mouffetard, you will find food stalls, chocolate shops, little restaurants, and eateries offering delicious takeaways.

Proceed north on Rue Mouffetard toward Rue du Pot de Fer, and in 250 meters, you will arrive at Place de la Contrescarpe.

13. Place de la Contrescarpe

Place de la Contrescarpe - Paris

Place de la Contrescarpe is one of the liveliest corners in the Latin Quarter. This charming little square is packed with bustling cafés frequented by local students and tourists, which are great places for a French apéritif and people-watching.

Place de la Contrescarpe was also one of Earnest Hemingway ‘s favorite hangout places in Paris, so much so that he mentioned it in his novels A Moveable Feast and The Sun Also Rises . Indeed, Hemingway lived not far from the square, on 74 Rue du Cardinal Lemoine.

Walk in an easterly direction on Rue Lacépède toward Rue Gracieuse. Take the first street to the left (Rue Monge), and you will see the Arènes de Lutèce on your right in about 150 meters.

14. Arènes de Lutèce

Arenes de Lutece - Paris

The Latin Quarter has many lesser-known attractions, including the Arènes de Lutèce . Built between the 1st and 2nd centuries CE, this arena of Roman Paris , which could seat up to 15,000 spectators, was used for gladiatorial fights and theatrical performances.
