"What Police? There Are No Police. I Don't Believe In Police."

The Trip as written by Jack Nicholson and directed by Roger Corman might be the most authentic point-by-point recreation of what it is like to take LSD. Peter Fonda is getting divorced which is naturally a bummer, so he goes over to Dennis Hopper's house to drop acid while Bruce Dern watches over him. I want Bruce Dern to be my once and future trip guide as he is totally chill. Dennis Hopper is exactly the semi-skeevy but alright dude in a hippie poncho who deals as a public service toward mass enlightenment. The 'real world' aspect of The Trip is almost ethnographic in attention to accurate detail while…

"It's beautiful, man. There's some real stuff happening."

When it started out it seemed like this was gonna be the typical depiction of a trip seen through the eyes of someone who's never actually tripped - all kaleidoscopic lens effects and realistic hallucinations - but given that Jack Nicholson wrote the screenplay and Corman directed the thing, that would be an anomaly to say the least. In fact, it's pretty authentic, just that it mostly operates on a symbolic level. The moments of zen calm and free love are the highs; the Nazgûl and the cops... well, they represent the dark side - how a trip can quickly disappear down the wrong rabbit hole, man.

When Paul (Peter Fonda) decides…

Action!-The March of the (3) Rogers: B Is For Corman

This is a film that begs to be viewed while high on acid. I watched this with the frequent urge to pee as a result of all the Coke I had consumed. So, needless to say, I may have watched this in the wrong way.

But, whatever your state of mind, it's undeniable that this is a byproduct of its time, even though it was technically released two years well before counterculture's peak, or, as some would say, met its demise. The cinematography is trippy and on another level. The performance is chaotic with Fonda just loosing it. There are so many unforgettable sequences, but I think the one that…

Darren Carver-Balsiger

Review by Darren Carver-Balsiger ★★★★

The Trip is just a film about a guy taking LSD and tripping. That is the entire plot. But it's really compelling oddly enough. Roger Corman was at his most experimental here, layering the film with a psychedelic atmosphere and hallucinogenic visuals. It is incredibly impressive what he achieved on a low budget. The cool, disconnected imagery and rapidly edited montages are very evocative. They're boosted by the colourful sets and great re-use of old material to make the journey feel larger. The Trip is very 60s, capturing the zeitgeist of drugs and hippies, and embracing that trend. It's also very funny and a fair depiction of drug taking which neither glamorises or demonises drug use. It's a groovy film.

Humbled and honored to be invited by  Amy  to guest star on her awesome pod  Watch This List !

"Insomnia Cinema" is now the second phase to her mainstay show with shorter episode lengths and zero editing.  Watch us discuss Roger Corman's 1967 experience,  The Trip , a wacky little gem of the 60s that highlights my definition of a midnight movie. An otherwise calming discussion for a film that can get off the rails on a dime!

Big thanks to Amy for having me on. 🍻

Low-key Corman's best (?) or at least most interesting -- somehow manages to walk that razor-thin line between hokey "how do you do, fellow kids" posturing and being a genuinely radical film, so frequently beautiful in its shameless mimicking of the work of so many underground filmmakers, except with an actual budget and in 35mm

Mini-Collab  with  artistaerratico ! Thanks for picking this one--a Roger Corman flick is a refreshing break from today's special effects!!! Read artista's  review here ! Go follow STAT!

The editing in this film is BANANAS. Sheer BANANAS. The final 15 minutes probably has a few hundred. A film that solely wants to focus on the effects of LSD and how that translates to a visual medium, sounds like a hit or miss venture depending on who you are, but with Roger Corman at the helm there's something really fascinating going on here. The Trip is one of those films that fills in the answer as to why we have movies, in that, the pictures and effects on screen are no way translatable to just mere…

“I can see right into my brain. Oh, you were right man. Everything’s in the head.”

This film “gets” a lot of the experience. Bruce Dern tells Peter Fonda to just relax , but of course Fonda lets his divorce anxiety start messing with his mind, causing his evening to frequently dip into anxiety. You gotta relax or you’re gonna have a bad time, man!

Another honest element in the film: Bruce losing Fonda at one point made me remember something I hadn’t thought of for a while. Like 15 years ago, my buddy — who had never done hallucinogenics, and had a history of manic episodes — asked me if I’d do psilocybin with him. Well, I figured I’d be…

This resonated less in my second viewing. While it's not completely unrealistic in terms of how thoughts melt under the influence of acid, the Nicholson-Era Cormanism struck me as being more trendy than revelatory. The saving grace is one hundred percent Bruce Dern and his soft-toned guidance. Listening to him walk Peter Fonda through the stimulating curiosities of common household items cloaks my body like a warm blanket. A calming voice of reason, a voice I wish would walk me through life whilst completely sober. Talk to me, Bruce...

The Jack Nicholson Film That Led to 'Easy Rider' and the New Hollywood

The Big Picture

  • The Trip showcases LSD's impact on a heartbroken man, exploring 1960s counterculture and influencing the New Hollywood era.
  • The film's success led to the creation of Easy Rider , reflecting the growing interest in counter-culture and alternative lifestyles.
  • New Hollywood marked a shift in the film industry, with directors gaining more control and exploring unconventional themes and styles.

The transformative powers of LSD are on full display in The Trip , a psychedelic movie written by Jack Nicholson and directed by Roger Corman . The film stars Peter Fonda as Paul Groves, a newly divorced and heartbroken commercial director who imbibes the psychedelic to expand his consciousness and heal from the pain that his unfaithful wife inflicted upon him. When his trip takes a terrifying turn, Groves escapes his "trip guide" and begins wandering around the Sunset Strip where he meets a coterie of weirdo characters who are also interested in LSD, which include a far-out Dennis Hopper and a young Bruce Dern . Driven by mysterious visions of hooded figures, Groves wanders through the 1960s California counterculture and is profoundly changed by the experience following the film's conclusion. Released during the Summer of Love, The Trip struck a chord with young audiences now enamored with the hippie lifestyle and counter-cultural movement, ushering in a new rebellious era in Hollywood that gave birth to Easy Rider .

A disillusioned TV-commercial director is guided by his friend through an LSD trip, during which he evaluates his identity and his relationships with women.

What is 'The Trip' About?

Peter Fonda is Paul Groves, a successful director of commercials despondent over his adulterous wife, Sally Groves ( Susan Strasberg ). Faced with the tragedy of enduring a divorce he does not want, Paul's glamorous world, embodied through the avatar of his impossibly beautiful wife, is falling apart, throwing Paul into a state of anomie and listlessness. What to do about it? Under the tutelage of his friend John (Dern), Paul buys acid from a far-out drug dealer (Hopper), and together they drop acid in a new-age shamanic ritual . John does his best to lead Paul through his trip, but things go bad and Paul finds himself terrorized by visions of hooded horse-riding figures in black. Fraught with terror, Paul flees into the neon Babylon of the Sunset Strip where he wanders through an endless maze of nightclubs, parties, and loose acquaintances, eventually coming to terms with the loss of his wife and accepting his fate.

Paul's trip forces him to confront some philosophical issues throughout the film concerning the roles of women in his life, the commercialism of his chosen profession, and his relationship with sex. Paul's inner journey through the recess and perceptions of his mind mirrored the cultural awakening many people experienced during the turbulent and transformative landscape of the American 1960s . The traditional sexual dynamics and spirituality of the previous decade were falling out of fashion and the youth were turning to drugs and rock and roll to transcend their inherited value sets. The Trip was one of the first films to jump into the fray and portray the radically shifting cultural landscape and would help to usher in a new era in Hollywood.

What is the 'New Hollywood'?

The American New Wave of film, or simply, New Hollywood, was a cinematic revolution commensurate with the changing cultural landscape of the American 1960s until about the 1980s. The studio system, which had dominated American film since its inception, was rapidly losing money and falling into decline. In a desperate gambit to restore profitability, studios would put the director at the center of the film, giving them unprecedented control over the production of a film rather than the studio. The result was a deviation from traditional film narratives and stylistic conventions that were more violent, featured more sex, drug use, and other provocative themes.

This new crop of directors were younger, hipper, and had their fingers on the pulse of the changing American culture and any artist worth their salt began exploring these exciting new ideas, themes, and cultural totems. Corman, the director of The Trip, prepared for the film by dosing himself with LSD according to Mark McGee in the book, Faster and Furiouser . This method of preparation was a break from the more moralistic preconceptions usually associated with filmmaking in previous years and more reflective of what was happening in the beating heart of America. New Hollywood was a type of class transcendence that was more decadent, highly creative, and dared to tell the stories of the growing counterculture.

'The Trip' Was The Precursor to 'Easy Rider'

The Trip was immensely popular and production company AIG's most successful release grossed $6 million against a budget of $100,000 and was subsequently instrumental in developing Easy Rider , the quintessential counter-cultural touchstone starring Peter Fonda and Denis Hooper as motorcycle-riding drug dealers. Corman's thoughts on the success of the film are quoted in the dissertation, Hippie Films, Hippiesploitation, And The Emerging Counterculture , "I think that one of the reasons that the audience came in such large numbers was out of curiosity. They didn’t really want to take LSD, but the reviews and comments said this came somewhat close to an LSD experience, so they could take it without taking it." Corman is suggesting that although many Americans may not have wanted to directly engage in the counterculture, they were at least curious about it.

The resulting popularity of The Trip sent a clear message to the powers that be in Hollywood that the desire for a new kind of film was indeed marketable. Then, in 1969, came the iconic cultural touchstone that is Easy Rider . The film is a motorcycle journey through a drugged-out American landscape replete with morally dubious hippies on a quest to find god. The film, like its predecessor The Trip, was similar in this regard as its protagonists were both people on the edge searching for meaning in a rapidly changing America. The Trip was a litmus test. A toe dipped into a brackish pool, finding the water hospitable, Columbia Pictures decided to jump right in, and by amplifying the themes laid out in The Trip, created a film that would arguably become the film that defined a generation.

5 new to Paramount Plus movies with 90% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes

T he library of must-watch movies on Paramount Plus has expanded in April 2024, with the streaming service adding plenty of new picks that you’ll want to make time to stream.

All of the options on this list can stake a claim to be included in our roundup of the best Paramount Plus movies because each has scored at least 90% on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes . That’s no mean feat and serves as a testament to the quality of each of them. The new movies range from a road-trip classic to an overlooked indie flick starring a young Peter Dinklage.

If you’re unsure where to start with all the new movies and shows added to Paramount Plus in recent weeks, we’re on hand to cut through the clutter and pick out the movies most deserving of a place in your watchlist. With further introduction, let’s dive into the list…

'Nebraska' (2013)

A quaint comedy-drama centered on a father-son relationship, and a cross-country road trip to settle scores and claim a million-dollar lottery prize, “Nebraska” comes from director Alexander Payne whose newest movie, “The Holdovers”, has made big waves in recent months.

“Nebraska” is similarly charming with an award-winning leading performance from Bruce Dern, alongside a brilliant role for Will Forte that allows him to flex his comedic muscles and showcases some solid dramatic chops. Presented in stunning black-and-white, the color in “Nebraska” comes from its characters and deadpan humor.

Genre:  Comedy drama

Rotten Tomatoes score:   91%   Stream it on  Paramount Plus

'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' (1987)

Speaking of must-watch road trip movies, “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” is the genre's gold standard. In this classic comedy, Neal Page (Steven Martin), desperately needs to get from New York to Chicago to make it home for Thanksgiving.

Just about every part of his trip goes wrong including his flight getting diverted, and then being forced to travel across the country with the most annoying companion ever, Del Griffith (John Candy). Martin and Candy are two of the funniest actors in cinema history and bounce off each other expertly. The movie’s final destination is very predictable, the journey to the mushy ending is a hoot.

Genre:  Comedy

Rotten Tomatoes score:   92%   Stream it on  Paramount Plus

'The Station Agent' (2003)

Before “Game of Thrones” made him a household name, Peter Dinklage could be found cutting his teeth in movies like “The Station Agent”, and watching the 2003 movie now it’s clear he was a star-in-the-making. In this comedy-drama, Dinklage plays Fin, a young man who moves into an abandoned train depot after his only friend dies.

Intent on a life of total solitude, his plans to be alone are halted when he meets a young woman (Patricia Clarkson) dealing with a personal tragedy, a talkative hot-dog vendor (Bobby Cannavale), and a pregnant librarian (Michelle Williams). These flawed but kind-hearted individuals teach Fin that other people aren’t so bad after all.

Genre:  Drama

Rotten Tomatoes score:   94%   Stream it on  Paramount Plus

'Galaxy Quest' (1999)

“Galaxy Quest” is a farcical parody of 20th-century sci-fi aiming particularly at the “Star Trek” universe. But, this isn’t a mean-spirited comedy trying to tear into the beloved franchise and its passionate fanbase. If anything, “Quest Galaxy” is more of a loving tribute to the beloved series.

It stars Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell and Daryl Mitchell as cast members of a cult sci-fi TV show who are drawn into a conflict with real extraterritorial invaders who mistakenly believe they are real interstellar explorations. “Galaxy Quest” is so fun you can enjoy it even if you’re not a Trekkie.

Rotten Tomatoes score:   90%   Stream it on  Paramount Plus  (with Showtime)

'El Dorado' (1967)

“El Dorado” is a ‘60s Western starring John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and James Caan. It sees the legendary Wayne play Cole Thornton, a gun-for-hire, who arrives in the town eponymous town of El Dorado to take on a job, but instead ends up being reunited with an old friend, Sheriff J.P. Hara (Mitchum).

Soon enough, the two team up with a rancher and his family to defend his land from a rival looking to steal their water. The New York Times called the classic movie a “tough, laconic and amusing Western that ambles across the screen as easily as the two veteran stars” and “worth seeing” in the publication's original 1967 review.

Genre:  Western

Rotten Tomatoes score:   96%   Stream it on  Paramount Plus
