tour con il clavigero

Tour Description

Experience a personal tour of the  Vatican ‘s collection with your own  private, licensed, English-speaking guide . Described as one of the best experiences in Rome, this tour takes you on a journey of discovery. Revere priceless masterpieces of the Renaissance together with sculptures and mosaics from antiquity. All part of the papal collection. All waiting for you to discover.

Taking a private tour means you can customize your time in the Eternal City’s epicenter to include exactly what you want. The  Sistine Chapel ,  Saint Peter’s Basilica , and the  Vatican Museums ‘ mind-blowing collection await you, but so too do such wonders as the stunning mosaics of the  Cabinet of Masks  and the unforgettable frescoes of the  Raphael Rooms .

Spend time among the hauntingly lifelike statues of the  Gallery of the Candelabra , explore the cartographical masterpieces of the  Gallery of Maps , and lose yourself in the incredibly intricate decorations adorning the walls of the  Gallery of Tapestries . After your private three or four-hour tour, you’ll feel you’ve truly experienced the Vatican.

Experience exclusive access to the Cabinet of Masks

The  Cabinet of Masks , named after the mosaics in the room’s center taken from  Hadrian’s Villa at Tivoli , can’t boast the same frescoes as the  Raphael Rooms . It can, however, claim one of the Vatican’s most stunning collection of statues. Among the sculptures on display are the marvelous Three Graces , a  nymph  which was a favorite of Goethe, and several statues of  Aphrodite  – the Greek goddess of love.

Meet the Laocoön – a statue soaked in pathos

Discovered on the Esquiline in 1506 (though sculpted perhaps 1,500 years earlier), the  Laocoön  statue is one of antiquity’s undisputed masterpieces. Mentioned by Pliny the Elder, Mount Vesuvius’ most famous victim, the artwork depicts one of the most famous scenes from the  Trojan War  in which the gods punish a Trojan priest named Laocoön for revealing the Greeks’ trickery and warning them not to lead the wooden horse into Troy’s walls.

Dragged into the sea by a serpent along with his two young sons, the statue powerfully captures Laocoon’s  agonizing desperation – a helpless father struggling in vain to save his children. The Vatican is home to a host of other ancient statues you can choose from, including dozens of busts of  Roman emperors  and the  Pantheon of gods  they worshipped.

Explore the Vatican Museums’ exquisite galleries

Your  Private Early Morning Vatican tour  offers you the opportunity to choose from any of the Vatican’s most prized highlights, many of which lie off the museum’s beaten path. Immerse yourself in the statues of the  Gallery of the Candelabra , nourish yourself with the knowledge of how medieval geographers understood the world around them in the immersive  Gallery of Maps .

You then have the chance to lose yourself in the intricate detail of Flemish designs in the ornate  Gallery of Tapestries  to see the masterful frescoes of the  Raphael Rooms  which most say rival those of Michelangelo.

Pay homage to Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel

Marvel at Michelangelo’s masterpiece, the  Sistine Chapel , in the peace and tranquility it deserves, practically alone and free from any crowds. Your specialist guide will inject life into the frescoes of this private papal chapel, bringing it to life and crafting a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Discover the story behind Michelangelo’s creation of the  Last Judgement , see if you can spot key figures and scenes on the  Sistine Chapel Ceiling  – even try to identify Michelangelo himself who painted his  self-portrait  into the torso of a certain saint.

Soak in the sights of Saint Peter’s Basilica

The final Vatican highlight on your complete early morning Vatican experience is the majestic Saint Peter’s Basilica . Admire its marvelous mosaics, still cared for by the Vatican Mosaic School , and come face to face with  Michelangelo’s Pieta , and  Bernini’s Baldachin  in all their resplendent glory.

Conclude your private adventure outside the basilica, in  Saint Peter’s Square , where the Pope still holds his audiences. In the shade of the ancient Egyptian Vatican obelisk, you can absorb the  incredible experience  of having had the morning in the Vatican to yourself.

Many consider our  Vatican Early Morning Tour  as being “one of the best experiences in Rome.”

Book yours today and experience it for yourself.

*Please note, shoulders and knees need to be covered during the tour. No vests, shorts, or skirts above the knee will be allowed inside the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica.*

Vatican Museums Key Master Tour - You can unlock the Sistine Chapel!

Elyssa Bernard

By Elyssa Bernard

December 21, 2023

Can you imagine standing in the Sistine chapel alone?

Gazing at the masterpieces all around you, taking it all in without any distractions?

This is what it's like when you take the VIP Vatican Key Master tour.

vip open vatican sistine with few people

How can you take this tour and what is it like? That's what this page is about!

Waking up the Vatican - 6 AM tour of the Vatican Museums

With this exclusive tour , you'll 'wake up' the Vatican Museum buildings by going around with the Key Master and literally opening doors and turning on lights.

On this page we'll go over:

  • What are the highlights of the Vatican's Key Master tour?
  • What will you see on this walking tour?

What's not included?

  • Is it worth taking the Vatican Key Master small group tour?

What are some alternative Vatican tours?

  • How can you book the Vatican Key Master's guided tour?

What are the highlights of the Vatican Key Master's tour?

This is truly one of the most special tours of the Vatican Museums I know.

And I've taken every Vatican Museums tour there is, and even some tours they don't offer any more.

Nothing compares to how amazing this guided tour is.

And I use the word "amazing" in the truest sense of the word.

A VERY early start!

While the start time can be a bit rough, especially for the jet-lagged or those looking to relax on vacation, the 6AM exclusive entrance to the Vatican Museums feels oh so privileged.

The tour meeting time is 5:45AM and it will be dark.

We had a full moon overhead when I recently took this tour.

Do not be late , you will be denied entry if you do not arrive on time!

What to expect

Your meeting point is outside the main entrance, where you will be welcomed by the official Vatican tour guide.

The doors to the museums are shut tight.

All of a sudden, a crack of light appears, as a guard opens one of the doors.

As you enter the museums, you'll be mostly in the dark.

If you've ever visited the Vatican Museums before, you will be astounded by the quiet.

The tour has a maximum of 20 people, so it's an intimate group and you'll easily be able to follow along with the official Vatican guide.

Just a small group goes when they run this, so the 20-person maximum is the true maximum.

(Other "VIP" or "early-bird" Vatican museums and Sistine Chapel tours are run often concurrently by several different agencies, so while you will find smaller crowds, and the museums will be emptier, they are less exclusive than this one.)

One of the first things you'll do is visit the terrace where you can see Saint Peter's dome .

The Vatican Gardens spread out below you and it's so dark and so quiet.

And peaceful.

early morning on the Vatican terrace

Who are the Key Masters?

Next, you'll go meet the Vatican Key Master, called the " clavigero ", where you'll see all the keys they use for opening Vatican museums every day (except Sundays, although the Vatican Museums are open the last Sunday of every month .)

vip open vatican - elyssa with key master

There are 2,797 keys that open around 300 rooms in the vast museums.

Gianni Crea is THE clavigero , and he oversees a team of 10 others, 5 who open the museums each morning and another 5 who close them.

The teams regularly alternate so they do both shifts.

You'll follow Gianni and another key master, and hear explanations from your guide of various important works as you move through the rooms.

The key masters will allow one person to open a given door, and with only 20 people on the tour, everyone will have a chance to open a Vatican Museum door .

When I took this tour recently, I was allowed to open the Sistine Chapel !

vip open vatican - key to sistine chapel

Clavigero comes from the Latin word " clavis " which means "key."

You may have heard of the word " conclave " which is when the cardinals are locked inside the Sistine Chapel to vote on a new pope.

Conclave is from " con clave " - with the key, i.e. under lock and key.

What will you see on this guided tour?

The group tour route is the typical itinerary you'd follow on most Vatican Museum visits .

But you may see some additional things depending on the Vatican tour guide and/or key masters accompanying you.

It also may depend on your own interests.

Main route through the Museums

Most Vatican Museums tours, including this one, take you through:

  • The Octagonal courtyard (where you can see the famous sculptures of the Laocoön and Belvedere Apollo.)
  • The Rotunda room
  • The Greek Cross Room
  • The Tapestries Hall
  • The Gallery of Maps
  • The Raphael Rooms
  • The Sistine Chapel

But it's not so much that you get to see these rooms, it's how you see them.

When you go into the Octagonal Courtyard , it will likely still be dark out, perhaps with the beginnings of dawn.

A huge benefit of having exclusive hours inside!

The quiet here is truly wonderful, but the best part is that the guides allow you to walk AROUND the sculptures and see them (and photograph them) from all angles, in all their majesty.

During regular visiting hours, you cannot get this close to these sculptures, nor can you walk around them.

The Gallery of Maps is a particular highlight for many people.

vip open vatican - elyssa in hall of maps

The tour guide will make this tour even more fun by having you walk into the Gallery of Maps in the dark, I mean nearly pitch black, and then telling you to get your cameras ready for when the lights come on.

It will give you chills!

Then you get to go through and open all the windows as your guide gives you a tour of the empty galleries.

And of course, the most amazing part is opening the Sistine Chapel door, going inside in the dark, and watch Michelangelo's frescoes flicker as THOSE lights come on.

You will never forget this moment.

The Sistine Chapel is such a sacred place, somewhere art historians have studied for centuries, so to enter completely alone and see one of Rome's most sought after spaces without the normal crowds of people is indescribable.

Exciting extras

Because they have to open up all the rooms, as you go along on this Key Master's tour with the Clavigero , you may be treated to exclusive access to some rooms and sights normally not available to regular visitors.

bramante staircase

These extra special spots might be included on your tour but it may also depend on the tour guide and the timing.

You might also ask the guide if there is something specific you want to see as you go along.

On this tour, you may be able to also visit:

  • The Bramante staircase (with the best sunrise views!)
  • The animal room(s), also known as the stone zoo
  • The terrace overlooking the Pinecone courtyard (which is accessible from the Egyptian wing which you will also see)
  • The room of the Biga

room of the biga

If you've ever visited the Vatican Museums on a regular visit or as part of tour groups, you'll know how special and unusual it is to be able to see these spots.

Or perhaps you'll visit the museums at a later date, and you'll note how these areas are all off limits and you'll think to yourself, wow, I got to see that.

Want to visit the Vatican Secret Rooms separately, including the Bramante Staircase, Room of the Masks, and Niccoline Chapel?

This is a very particular tour in which much of the focus is on the ooooh-factor of opening Vatican Museums doors and turning on lights.

Yes, you will get to see the museums and many masterpieces , and the guide that accompanies you (not the key master) will give you an excellent tour full of anecdotes and explanations.

But because you are opening rooms and have to get to the Sistine Chapel at a certain time (before they open for the "early morning" groups), you have to keep to a schedule and won't be able to explore certain parts of the museums.

NEW FOR 2024!

The archeological area of the Vatican Necropolis of Via Triumphalis is now open for visitors.

This is an ancient Roman burial site that is within the Vatican walls and before now was very difficult to get access to.

You can only enter as part of an official Vatican tour group, and tickets need to be purchased through the official website .

This is an entirely separate visit, so you will not have access to either St Peter's Basilica or the Vatican Museums.

Click here to watch my YouTube video about it and see what it's like!

Some wings not included

vatican museums pinacoteca

There are a few things not included on this tour that are not necessarily included in most tours anyway, such as:

  • The Pinacoteca (paintings gallery)
  • The Braccio Nuovo (New Wing)
  • The Etruscan Wing
  • The Gregorio Profano Wing

In any case, after the tour ends, you remain inside the Vatican Museums and may stay as long as you like.

You can take advantage of the fact you haven't had to go through a huge security line and that there will still be few other travelers around and go back and visit any of the above sections if you have time, energy, and interest.

(Personally, I was ready to head out to a nice big breakfast!)

Breakfast not included

Don't get caught out with hunger pangs!

Those with low blood sugar, or taking this tour with kids may want to bring a few protein bars with you.

Speaking of breakfast, it is not included with this tour.

As the meeting time is so early, you likely won't have had breakfast before the tour and might be hungry by the time it finishes.

Again, you will still be inside the Vatican Museums at the end and can have breakfast at either the café downstairs or in the Pinecone courtyard.

Or, if you are ready to leave, you could go elsewhere for breakfast .

sunrise from bramante staircase

Saint Peter's Basilica not included

Finally, the main thing not included in this tour is a visit to the basilica  next door.

(The shortcut is open and available to people on an official tour which includes the Basilica later in the morning but not this early.)

If you want to visit, you could go right after your tour ends, but you'll still have to leave the museums and walk to Saint Peter's Square , and go through Vatican City security checks to enter the basilica.

Here is a map so you can see the walk (it will open in a new window.)

But at this early hour, you should not have much of a wait in line.

Or you could visit the basilica later or on another day .

The perfect 3-day itinerary in Rome

Trying to figure out how to organize your visit to Rome? I've got the perfect 3-day itinerary for first-time visitors (or those who have not been here in a while.) It works for a 2.5 day visit as well.

In my 3-day itinerary, you'll see all the major must-see Rome attractions like the Vatican , Colosseum , Trevi Fountain , Pantheon , Piazza Navona , Spanish Steps , Castel Sant'Angelo , and much more.

And if you have more time, or want suggestions for extra/other things to do, you'll find that there too.

Visit my page with the best 3-day itinerary in Rome for first-timers .

Is it worth taking the Vatican Key Master's tour?

Most visitors to Rome want to see the Sistine Chapel and to do that, you must go through the Vatican Museums .

There are many options for tours, including fast-track, early morning, semi-private, and so on.

You will find plenty of less-expensive tours that still offer a more "exclusive" experience (see below) than regular Vatican Museum tours .

So is it worth the price to wake up so early and take this tour ?

In my opinion, absolutely yes . The amazing experience is magical and unforgettable.

That said, if this is your first time visiting Rome , and if you have a strong interest in art, you may wish to plan a separate visit where you can take more time to explore the Vatican Museums.

You may also want a visit that includes going inside the basilica .

tour con il clavigero

Is the museums key master tour unsuitable for anyone?

Due to the route taken through the Vatican Museums, this particular tour is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible .

There are plenty of stairs and some non-wheelchair accessible surfaces involved.

There is a wheelchair accessible and limited mobility route through the museums, and tour providers who offer specific tours tailored to these needs which you can book.

The Key Master tour is also not suitable for strollers , and I would not recommend bringing young children along.

There are some excellent tours of the museums aimed at children available as an alternative.

Take Walks is a well-respected tour company offering high-quality tours.

They offer this tour regularly, but if you don't want to take this tour or can't find availability, there are some excellent alternatives:

  • Pristine Sistine™ Early Entrance Small Group Vatican City Tour - You'll enter the museums an hour before the public, and visit the Sistine Chapel before the crowds come, followed by an early morning visit to Saint Peter's Basilica.
  • VIP Sistine Chapel After Closing Time Tour with Drinks in the Vatican Palace Courtyard - I really love this tour that starts close to closing time and finishes with you and your guide nearly alone in the Sistine Chapel after the doors have closed to regular visitors. The Happy Hour afterward is a nice plus.
  • Vatican Highlights Tour with St. Peter’s Dome Climb - See the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St.Peter's Basilica, including a climb up Saint Peter's dome.
  • Vatican Museums Night Tour with Sistine Chapel - From March 2024 you can enjoy a night tour of the Vatican Museums on certain days of the week. There are usually fewer people than during the day. The basilica is not included in this tour.
  • Rome in a Day Tour: Including Vatican City, Colosseum & Historic Center - Short on time? Want to see Rome highlights in a day ? This is the tour for you.
  • The Complete Vatican Tour With Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel - This is a standard skip-the-line small group (max 20 people) daytime tour of the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and the Basilica.
  • St. Peter’s Basilica from Top to Bottom with Dome Climb & Crypt - If you're not keen on visiting the museums and just want to visit the basilica, this is the perfect tour for you.

Good Morning Vatican!

We didn’t know what to expect and having already arranged many  tour options of the Vatican Museums , we thought it would have been another similar experience. We were going for a survey of a new experience.

The  Early, the Super-Early, the VIP, the Fast track and Skip the line Vatican Museums tour …. all these tours are fine, good, great, but you cannot compare the  Good Morning Vatican Museums  with anything else, ever. The feeling isn’t anything you have tried so far. It feels a little bit like the Night at the Museum with Ben Stiller and, a little bit, like Mission Impossible with Tom Cruise. At 6am, while it’s still dark, you access the Museums through the magnificent door, under the sight of  two statues of Raffaello and Michelangelo .

We were accompanied in an ancient-like decorated elevator to the level where the visit would start. Everything was dark.    Il Clavigero ,   the keyman of the Vatican Museums ,  Gianni Crea , has welcomed us at the door of the terrace (at the Corrazze Atrium) that looks over the  St Peter’s Basilica .

The pale day-light, that was struggling with the dark of the previous night, illuminated enough just to see the silhouette and the lights of  the St Peter’s Dome . We were there alone, overlooking the garden and the biggest church in the World, all of this just for ourselves.

We went back into the darkness of the Museums, where we felt the thrill of being alone inside the walls that contain so many centuries of history and art. In the past centuries the Museums have been used as  Popes’ apartments . That’s why we felt a little bit like intruders, but mostly like  hidden treasure seekers  or adventurous explorers. In all that obscurity and silence, broken only by clavigero’s keys’ rattling, you felt like you could spot a ghost or hear some whispering echoes.

Gianni, il Clavigero, the Keyman of the Vatican Museums

Gianni would allow us to try to open some of the doors, by giving us the keys. Just to hold one of nearly 2700 keys of  the most important collection of art in the World , was worth the experience (and wakening up at 5am!). The  Pio Clementino Museum  and  the Octagonal Courtyard  statues were wrapped up in silence of the courtyard and tranquility of the morning.

We arrived to the door that will eventually bring us into  the Galleries of the Vatican Museums . The pitch dark around us was cut only by the torch-light. Gianni opened the door and let us into the darkness of the  Gallery of Tapestries  that, after the usual “switch-sound”, was illuminated in all its beauty. We opened all other Galleries, opened the window covers in the  Gallery of Maps , watched from the window at 6.30am toward the  Pope Ratzinger’s house , admired the  Vatican Gardens  from the balcony with the first, shy sunrays, opened the  Raphael Rooms  for other nearly 30.000 visitors who will enter the  Vatican Museums  on that day from 8am on… We were  opening the   Vatican Museums  that day.

You really feel in symbiosis with the art, with the world that produced that art, you feel closer to the artistic expression displayed in front of you and you feel peace. After this experience, I would never ever enter a Museum for a visit with all the crowds. Only in this way you understand what’s the best way to appreciate the artworks.

We arrived to a double side, not big, wooden door, where Gianni stopped by and handed one of the three big rings with all the keys. He said “who finds the right key, he or she will  open the Sistine Chapel today !”. It looked like hundreds of keys on one big ring and we didn’t have a clue how the SISTINE CHAPEL KEY could have looked like!!!! It felt like we were searching for a 1 billion dollar worth key. If you find it, you can really have the  once-in-a-life time honor (and unique thrill!!!) to open the Sistine Chapel !! We are not sure if it will give more value to your CV, but for sure you won’t forget the shiver you get of holding  the keys of the Sistine Chapel !

The Key!!! The one that opens the Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel gets illuminated by ALL of the lights and that happens only in the occasions like the  Pope’s ceremony , the  Conclave and the 6 am tour! (Yes, you understood well!).

You cannot take pictures, but also try not to cry overwhelmed by all the emotions.

We left the Museums initially full of unexplainable emotions. Afterwards, we started to realize what this experience brought us: you feel like winning the lottery as you were the one among millions of people who got a chance to experience something unique. And this is one of those things that you buy and it makes you richer!

And for the rest of your life, you will have a vivid memory of something extraordinary and unique you were part of.

This tour was available on request for 2019 and is now bookable for the most part of 2023. If you would like to join this experience that you will remember for your whole life , please check  here for more details.

I Explored the Vatican's Secret Spaces Before Dawn With the Head Key Keeper — and Soon You Can, Too

See the Vatican without the crowds on this exclusive predawn tour with the head key keeper.

tour con il clavigero

After a bit of fumbling with the key by flashlight, I managed to open the iron gate, yet still found myself standing in pure darkness. My guide went ahead as I slowed my step, befuddled by where I was. From somewhere in the distance, he flipped the switch and I gasped. I was surrounded by the Vatican 's Gallery of Maps, an impressively ornate room with 40 large maps of Italy — some measuring up to 15 by 16 feet — dating back to 1582.

I had been here once before, in 2019, on a regular tour, and was instantly taken by the grandeur of this hallway en route to the Sistine Chapel . Back then, I briefly paused to look up, and was immediately enveloped by tour groups, as one leader — who was waving a little flag and rotely doling out facts to his group via microphone — ordered me to keep moving. But today, it was just a small group of us, with no one pushing me along. After all, I had unlocked the door.

This beyond-VIP access was the brainchild of the man who literally holds the 2,797 keys to the Vatican Museums, Gianni Crea. Crea has been the head clavigero, or key keeper, for nearly 25 years. Every morning, he goes through the spectacular routine of unlocking the doors and turning on the lights to the Catholic church's tremendous art collection of 20,000 pieces, and he thought it was a shame not to share the experience.

The museum quietly started offering a predawn tour a few years back, reserved for an exclusive crowd because of a steep price tag and limited dates. But now, tour booking platform GetYourGuide is making the tickets accessible to the public by offering the Turning the Lights on at the Vatican Museums experience for free on select days.

Between eight and 10 tickets will be available in pairs on a first-come, first-served basis starting on Monday, May 30, with more being offered each month from June through October 2022 (tours will be held on June 14, July 12, Sept. 14, and Oct. 19). While those require getting to Rome independently, the company is also giving away one 48 Hours at the Vatican grand prize, which includes a pair of tickets to the experience plus a €3,000 voucher (about $3,215 USD) for flights and accommodations and another €1,000 (about $1,071 USD) to use on additional GetYourGuide activities.

"When people get into the museums on these tours, they are just amazed and can really focus on the art without the crowds," Crea told Travel + Leisure through a translator. "Art has the power to unify everyone, regardless of religion."

During the experience, Crea leads a small group — usually no more than 10 people — through dark halls, as he hands keys to each person, letting everyone unlock a few doors and light up a few rooms in the quiet museum before the first tourists arrive. To add to the exclusivity, he even takes the group beyond normal barriers.

On our tour, he dropped the velvet rope around two of the museum's most famous works — "Belvedere Torso," from the 15th century, and "Laocoön," thought to be from about 40 to 30 B.C.E — and let us take a spin around each. (Fun fact: There's a surprise on the back side of the latter that few get to see.) He also led us to secret areas typically closed off to the public: the Bramante Staircase, the storied spiral stairs from the 1500s, as well as above the Pinecone Courtyard to a terrace, which he called his favorite spot since there are stunning views of St. Peter's Basilica's dome, the Vatican Gardens, and Rome.

But the true highlight of the tour is Crea himself, who so nonchalantly goes about his job, but possesses a smirk as he hands you the key, knowing what you're about to do is going to knock you off your feet while he leans back and watches with a joyful twinkle in his eye.

Despite that ease, his mind is always at work. To get the position as head key keeper, Crea had to learn to recognize each of the 2,797 keys by sight and know which door it opens (he claims he always had a photographic memory). He now manages a team of 11 clavigero, himself included, five who work the morning shift and five at night.

Crea started his career by working for the Carabinieri, the Italian police. "I left because I fell in love with a girl," he said. "My dad wasn't happy and asked, 'What are you going to do with your life now?'" He got a job at St. Peter's Basilica and then worked his way over to the Vatican as a custodian/guardian, eventually becoming a key keeper for a decade before earning the head spot — only the seventh in the position in history.

It's a role that comes with privileges and weighty responsibility. It wasn't until three years in that he saw the key to the heavily guarded Sistine Chapel. There only exists one copy of the old-fashioned key, and it's kept in an envelope that's sealed every night and signed and countersigned by the key keeper and the Vatican's management office.

With that burden, the key was soon placed in my hand, and I became the sole bearer of access to the room containing two of the world's greatest works of art, Michelangelo's "The Last Judgment" and his Renaissance frescoes on the ceiling. Unlike my last visit, where I struggled to find a spot to stand and look up at the art, I quite literally held the key, with no one rushing me while I explored every corner of the chapel. I showered Crea with questions, and he answered everything with such passion, including giving me a full rundown of how they create the smoke that rises out of the window when a new pope is chosen.

"Even people who are not religious at all, coming into the Sistine Chapel, there's something so magical about the place," said Crea. "There's something so moving about the place that they experience the spirituality in the history."

Even after his decades behind the scenes of the Vatican Museums, Crea is still in awe of all the art and history that surrounds him, and hopes that what he starts here will be mimicked by other museums around the globe . He said, "To see their faces filled with joy and pleasure — this is what makes me feel happy when I close the last door that gives access to the museums."

Meet the man with the keys to the Vatican

Every morning Gianni Crea unlocks the doors to history.

Gianni Crea is intimately familiar with the contours of history. Almost every morning for the past six years, he’s opened the doors to the Vatican Museums . He’s experienced the stillness of the Sistine Chapel at dawn, studied the shadows of Caravaggio, and admired the textures of ancient Egypt.

“Yes, I’m a key keeper, head key keeper, but I’m still a doorman that opens a museum,” says Crea, a devout Catholic. “But I open the doors to the history of art and the history of Christianity—and it’s the biggest and most beautiful history that exists in the world.”

Crea has worked in the Vatican for 20 years and as head clavigero for six. “When I hold these keys, worn by the passage of time, from this moment I become responsible beyond just myself,” he says.

His mornings begin at 5:30 a.m. in a secure bunker that holds 2,797 keys. Crea and his team of 10 clavigeri —five each on the morning and evening shifts—open and close 300 doors every day, mobilizing about 700 employees along with them. They traverse a 4.6-mile route through the museums which see up to 28,000 visitors per day.

“I know the smell that is waiting for me when I open the first door is the smell of history—the smell that men before us have breathed in.” It’s the very same ground that they have walked, loved, and cried on, he says.

"Each morning when I enter the Sistine Chapel I experience a string of emotions," Crea says.

the clavigero, Gianni Crea, in the Vatican Museum, Vatican City

"I have the keys, figuratively speaking, of the history of Christianity—both Christian history and the history of art," Crea says. "The Vatican Museums, including the Raffaello Rooms and the Sistine Chapel, are among the most beautiful works of art in the world."

Hardwired for Art

The Vatican Museums house, protect, and restore tens of thousands of priceless works that span ancient to modern times, but perhaps none are more iconic than the seat of the papal conclave . Crea still remembers being overcome with emotion the first time he accompanied an older key keeper for the opening of the Sistine Chapel in 1999.

“They’re so beautifully rendered in their details—the movements, the twisting, the musculature,” Crea says. “There is something there—something so special, so magical.”

Striking in their totality, Michelangelo’s frescoes blanket 12,000 square feet of the chapel. Scenes from the Book of Genesis and more than 300 figures reveal the intricacies of the human form. Crea has seen people of all faiths moved by its beauty.

In fact, some scientists propose that we are hardwired to have an emotional response to art, a principle that philosophers have strived to grasp for centuries.

“The painting will move the soul of the beholder when the people painted there each clearly shows the movement of his own soul,” wrote Florentine artist Leon Battista Alberti in 1435, nearly a century before the completion of the Sistine Chapel. "We weep with the weeping, laugh with the laughing, and grieve with the grieving.”

Today, neuroscientists are studying the biological basis of this repsonse in their labs—a relatively young field known as neuroaesthetics.

According to limited neuroimagining research , when we view images of bodies in motion or even perceive the movements required to make brushstrokes, our own motor systems are activated—this is known as the mirror neuron system , which is involved in social communication, empathy, and imitation. Other studies have found that the regions of the brain implicated in emotion processing are used when we look at art, suggesting an innate relationship between aesthetic judgement and emotion.

Tourists line up outside of St. Peter's Basilica (left) and the Octagonal Court (right). "The museums are art and culture and history," Crea says. "So every person that’s able to, in my opinion, should gift themselves this moment."

The Universal Language

Long before the advent of neuroimaging techniques, Leo Tolstoy proposed that art is “a means of union among men, joining them together in the same feelings ” —a medium that is often felt before it is consciously understood.   Like Tolstoy, Crea believes in the power of art—an expression of our shared human condition—to unite people.

“Everyone can find something beautiful, something moving,” he says. “The Vatican Museums, in my opinion, should be visited because they give you an understanding of art and history, regardless of your faith.” Crea suggests the Vatican Gardens are a model of tolerance—where plants from all over the world bloom and thrive in one place.

Pope Francis shared similar sentiments in his 2015 publication of La mia idea di Arte , which highlights the role art plays in evangelization. “The Vatican Museums must increasingly be a place of beauty and welcome. They must welcome new forms of art,” he wrote. “They must open their doors to people from all over the world, as an instrument of dialogue between cultures and religions, a tool for peace. ”   According to Pope Francis, art should be accessible to everyone regardless of their education or income.

In the same spirit, the Vatican recently started welcoming small groups to accompany Crea on his normally solitary morning routine this summer. “I’ve seen people become emotional when entering the Sistine Chapel, even gasping when the lights in the map room are turned on,” Crea says. “I want to gift the same emotions that I live to others. My desire is to share the emotions that I’ve lived for 20 years with people who visit the Vatican.”

Ultimately art binds us together through our shared culture, history, and humanity, he says. “I’m a simple custodian, but for me the beautiful thing is to be able to conserve and look after the keys of the history.”

Ermal Meta: «Il mio Palco aperto, così in tour ospito giovani emergenti»

Ermal Meta: «Il mio Palco aperto, così in tour ospito giovani emergenti»

Altruista, generoso, sensibile.

«No. Devo arrangiare i pezzi, registrarli e produrli.

Siamo in sei e suoniamo tutti: pochi fronzoli e tanto sudore.
