- Team dsm-firmenich PostNL roster for the 2024 Tour of Switzerland:

Tobias Lund Andresen (DEN)
Pavel Bittner (CZE) Sean Flynn (GBR)
 Chris Hamilton (AUS)
 Gijs Leemreize (NED)
 Oscar Onley (GBR)
 Frank van den Broek (NED)

- Team dsm-firmenich PostNL coach Pim Ligthart: "The Tour de Suisse is really tough this year with six out of the eight stages finishing uphill and two time trials which open and close the race. With Oscar coming back after injury and fresh down from altitude, we will take it day-by-day with him and see what is possible in terms of GC and stage results. Next to Oscar, we have a well balanced team where we have chances in the possible sprint on the second stage and we can also look to go for stage results from the bigger breakaways with the likes of Frank, Gijs and Chris later in the race."

- Soudal Quick-Step roster for the men's 2024 Tour de Suisse:

Ayco Bastiaens (BEL) Gil Gelders (BEL) Yves Lampaert (BEL) William Junior Lecerf (BEL) Fausto Masnada (ITA) Louis Vervaeke (BEL) Jordi Warlop (BEL)

- Soudal Quick-Step sports director Wilfried Peeters: "We are going to this hard race with a nice team who is very motivated and capable of fighting for some good results. We’re curious to find out what William can do in the general classification, but we won’t put any pressure, and instead just take it day by day and see where he ends up in the standings."

- Mattias Skjelmose (Trek-Segafredo) won the men's 2023 Tour de Suisse. Marlen Reusser (SD Worx) won the women's 2023 Tour de Suisse Féminin.

Tour de Suisse

Tour de Suisse 2023, Stage 3. There will be another start-studded list at the Tour de Suisse 2024

Taking place between 9-16 June, the Tour de Suisse 2024 is, along with the Critérium du Dauphiné , one of the key preparation events for riders taking part in the Tour de France , in addition to being a prestigious WorldTour race in its own right. The men's race features eight stages, while the women's race is to be held from 15-18 June, with four stages.

Tour de Suisse 2024: Key details

Where: Switzerland

When: 9-16 June 2024 (men's), 15-18 June 2024 (women's)

Rank: UCI WorldTour

More details to follow.

The Tour de Suisse – also referred to in English as the Tour of Switzerland – has a long and storied history. It was first run in 1933 as a five-stage race that started and finished in Zürich.

Beginning as a September, and then August, appointment, it established its June pre-Tour slot in the 1950s.

Early editions were most often won by home riders, including big-name Tour de France winners such as Hugo Koblet and Ferdi Kübler. But by the 1970s the Swiss were rarely having it their own way. The last home victor was Classics star Fabian Cancellara in 2009.

In 2024 will be the 87th edition of the men's race and the 8th edition of the women's race. The race has run every year since 1933 with the exception of a three year hiatus during World War Two and a cancellation in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The race traditionally features a mixture of time trials, relatively flat stages for the sprinters and high mountains. In the past, the weather has also played a part in the event, with the high mountain passes often affected by poor conditions and snowfall.

Tour de Suisse

The Tour de Suisse is Switzerland's national stage race and the nine days of racing usually visits almost every part of the country, often switching back and forth across the land to find difficult climbs, visit major cities and pass through the 26 cantons.

As is the case for races in all cycling friendly countries, the Tour de Suisse is a special event for the people along the route, with crowds along every section of the road cheering on the riders. In 2015 keen cyclists can also emulate the professional riders by taking part in the Tour de Suisse Challenge mass-participation events on June 13, 14 and 21. Entrants get to ride on the race route, while their family and friends can enjoy the Bike Expo and Kids’ World at the finish of the stages.

The Tour de Suisse was first held in 1933, making this year's race the 79th edition. Austria's Max Bulla won the first race, then the Swiss and Italian riders dominated until the seventies and the reign of Belgium's Eddy Merckx. However little known Italian rider Pasquale Fornara remains the only rider to have won the Tour de Suisse four times after notching up victories in 1952, 1954, 1957 and 1958.

Swiss riders Hugo Koblet and Ferdinand Kübler both won the Tour de Suisse three times in the forties and fifties, and they have now been joined in the record books by Portugal's Rui Costa of the Lampre-Merida team, who has won the last three editions of the race. He is the only person to ever win three consecutive editions of the Tour de Suisse.

Costa has been cheered to each of his victories by the numerous Portuguese people who live and work in Switzerland. In 2014 he took his third victory wearing the World Champion's rainbow jersey. Costa is keen to test his ability in the three-week long grand tours and has proven he can win stage races like the Tour de Suisse. In 2014 he ensured he was well placed overall after the time trial stages and then struck in the mountains, winning the final stage to Saas-Fee to snatch overall victory from Tony Martin of Germany. Local hero Matthias Frank of the Swiss IAM Cycling team was second at 33 seconds, with Bauke Mollema of the Netherlands finished third overall at 50 seconds.

Can Costa join Fornara in the record books with a fourth victory in 2015? We will find out in June.

Sections along the Grand Tour of Switzerland

Grand Tour of Switzerland, Streckenabschnitte, no region, spring, summer, autumn, car

Stage 1: Zurich – Appenzell

The most diverse stage of all – starting in the trendy city of Zurich, you’ll continue on to Zurich’s wine country, the thundering Rhine Falls and on to the historic book and textile city of St. Gallen before ending up in rural Appenzell.

Stage 2: Appenzell – St. Moritz

The stage with the most records – from Europe’s smallest town, Werdenberg, to Switzerland’s oldest city, Chur, and on to the Salginatobel Bridge, Switzerland’s only world monument, before you end up in St. Moritz.

Stage 3: St. Moritz – Bellinzona

Stage with the biggest change in altitude – from Alpine St. Moritz, at 1,822 metres above sea level, the route descends down into the imposing Bellinzona, at around 240 metres above sea level.

Stage 4: Bellinzona – Zermatt

The stage with the most bends – the Tremola snakes its way from Airolo up to the Gotthard Pass. At its most spectacular point, over a length of four kilometres the road climbs a height of 300 metres in 24 hairpin bends, each with its own name.

Stage 5: Zermatt – Lausanne

This is the stage where it’s time to get out – Zermatt is not only known for the Matterhorn, but also for being a car-free village. Visitors must leave their car in Täsch and take the train to Zermatt and back to Täsch, where the journey continues on by car through Valais to Lake Geneva.

Stage 6: Lausanne – Neuchâtel

The stage with the watchmaking tradition – watchmaking and innovation used to play out mainly in Geneva. Watchmaking soon spread across the Jura mountain range to other regions, including Le Sentier and Neuchâtel.

Stage 7: Neuchâtel – Bern

The stage with the most water – from Lake Neuchâtel, the route takes you to Lake Murten, Lake Schiffenen, Lake Gruyère, Lake Thun, Lake Brienz and finally along the Aare River to the capital, Bern.

Stage 8: Bern – Zurich

The stage with the most Swiss history – from Bern, the route leads into the Canton of Uri, the location of the well-known Rütli meadow, where the oath marking the alliance of the three original cantons was sworn in 1291.

Access road: Basel – Neuchâtel

There are around 40 museums in the cultural metropolis of Basel. From here, the access road coasts along the Doubs River to the towns of La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle, both known for their watchmaking traditions. The route ends in Neuchâtel.

Access road: Chiasso – Bellinzona

From Chiasso, the route meanders into the palm tree-lined streets of Lugano, a starting point for excursions to several local mountains. It continues to the historic old town of Locarno and then on to Bellinzona with its castles, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Access road: Geneva – Saint-George

From the cosmopolitan Swiss city of Geneva, where the Jet d’Eau, a 140-metre-high fountain in Lake Geneva, shoots into the sky, the route continues on to Nyon before ending up in Saint-George, which makes up part of the Vaud Jura Park.

Tour de France standings: Race outlook after Stage 15

Portrait of Jack McKessy

One week remains at the 2024 Tour de France after Stage 15.

Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogačar extended his race lead even further with a second consecutive stage win on Sunday. Pogačar will still wear the yellow jersey on Tuesday for Stage 16 following the riders' day off on Monday after winning the 15th stage by over a minute.

With six stages remaining in this year's race , the 25-year-old Slovenian holds a three-minute lead over Danish cyclist Jonas Vingegaard. Pogačar also holds the lead in the mountains classification competition for reaching the most mountain summits first.

Here's how the classification at the 2024 Tour de France looks as it enters its final week and heads into its second and final off day.

Tour de suisse: another 1-2 for uae team emirates as adam yates takes stage 7 victory.

Teammates Yates and João Almeida cross the line side-by-side on final climb to Villars-sur-Ollon

How it unfolded

UAE Team Emirates once again showed their strength at the Tour de Suisse as Adam Yates and João Almeida crossed the line together to finish one-two at the race’s final mountain stage at Villars-sur-Ollon.

The pair, already lying first and second in the overall standings, proved the strongest from the elite GC group on the concluding climb of the 118km stage, going clear inside the final 2km and crossing the line side-by-side in a decisive victory.

Matthew Riccitello (Israel-Premier Tech) came home in third place at 14 seconds down to continue his impressive week, while Wilco Kelderman (Visma-Lease A Bike) led home a group of further GC men – including Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek), Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers), and Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) at 16 seconds.

“You see, then, he’s such a nice guy,” Yates said of Almeida after the stage. “When we got away at the end there, we said what we should do. I asked him if I could have the stage, and he said yes, straight away. It just showed the character he is. He’s such a nice guy and he’s in such great condition that he could easily win himself.

“To have that is a great quality, not just as a bike rider but as a person, so chapeau to him.”

The stage result brings Yates’ GC lead over Almeida to 31 seconds ahead of the final stage on Sunday, a largely uphill 15.7km time trial from Aigle to Villars-sur-Ollon. Bernal, Skjelmose, and Riccitello fill out the top 5 at 1:51, 2:50, and 3:02 down respectively.

Despite his GC lead, Yates is expected to miss out on the overall win, with Almeida the favourite to take over and score the big victory in Sunday’s time trial. Yates said his teammate will likely take “almost a minute” on him during the 15.7km closer.

“I think for me personally as well, tomorrow’s time trial, he’s going to put almost a minute into me, so I’m sure you’ll see him on this chair tomorrow,” he said.

“I think he’s shown in the last few days how strong he is when he starts doing his crazy pace. When he’s alone tomorrow in the TT, I think he’s going to fly up here. So, we’ll see tomorrow, and then hopefully we can win again.”

The penultimate stage of the 2024 Tour de Suisse would bring with it the final test for the riders and a high-mountain circuit race with four major climbs along the way, including the first-category run to the finish at Villars-sur-Ollon (7.9km at 7.7%).

The opening climb of the day, the Col de la Croix (3.8km at 8.8%), came right at the start of the 118km stage, and saw the day’s break get away after a flurry of attacks at the front of the peloton.

Sylvain Moniquet (Lotto-Dstny) led the way over the top and was joined in the move by seven other men – his teammate Maxim Van Gils, plus Harold López (Astana Qazaqstan), Finlay Pickering (Bahrain Victorious), Einer Rubio (Movistar), Valentin Paret-Peintre (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale), Jan Christen (UAE Team Emirates), and Johannes Staune-Mittet (Visma-Lease A Bike).

Back in the peloton, Ineos Grenadiers took charge of the pacemaking, holding the break’s advantage to the two-minute mark on the long descent to Aigle and the valley roads. In between the groups, Raúl García Pierna (Arkéa-B&B Hotels) was alone in the chase, but he gave up the ghost just as the next climb of the day started, 70km out.

There, it was the riders’ first chance to check out the closing first-category climb to Villars-sur-Ollon, before continuing on uphill to the additional second-category climb of the Col de la Croix.

Ineos kept pushing the pace on the way up, reducing the break’s advantage and ropping some major names along the way, including Cian Uijtdebroeks (Visma-Lease A Bike), and Lenny Martinez (Groupama-FDJ).

Up front, it was Lotto-Dstny setting the pace with two men in the break before Christen and Paret-Peintre attacked with just over 60km to run, with the peloton following at the top of the climb to Villars-sur-Ollon a minute back.

The move didn’t work, however, with Staune-Mittet quickly countering on the short flat section before the climbing began again on the road up the Col de la Croix. It proved a wise move for the Norwegian, as behind him, the rest of the breakaway riders were getting dragged back by the peloton.

Van Gils, Rubio, and Paret-Peintre held out the longest, but Staune-Mittet was the only man left from the move by the top of the climb, 50km from the finish. The 22-year-old led by 40 seconds at the top, while behind him, Ineos Grenadiers softened the pace and swung off the front.

On the way down, UAE Team Emirates took up the slack as Staune-Mittet added another 30 seconds to his lead.  By the bottom of the descent, ahead of another 15km or so in the valley, the gap between the solo survivor and the peloton lay at 1:30, with a total of 22km remaining before the finish line.

At the 10km mark, on the final run to the start of the climbing, Staune-Mittet held a minute on the chase, with Ineos Grenadiers heading to the front once more, taking over from UAE Team Emirates.

The British team chipped away at Staune-Mittet’s advantage over the following kilometres, bringing it to 45 seconds at 8km, 35 at 7km, and 25 at 6km. He’d keep battling on through the Tissot sprint points on the way up to win himself a watch while behind him, Felix Gall (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) kicked off the attacks.

Staune-Mittet’s adventure came to an end at the 3km mark as Gall blew past, while the upping of the pace shattered the chasing GC group even further. An intra-team battle for the race lead at UAE Team Emirates got underway shortly afterwards as João made a move with 3km to go.

He took race leader Yates along with him, as well as Wilco Kelderman (Visma-Lease A Bike), and Matthew Riccitello (Israel-Premier Tech), though the latter duo were dropped as the UAE pair caught and passed Gall.

The finale, then, would be a two-man fight between teammates Almeida and Yates, with the Portuguese rider needing to make up 27 seconds before the closing of Sunday’s time trial to come away with the overall win.

Yates led the way into the final kilometre with Almeida glued to his wheel, while further back, Riccitello and Kelderman led the chase.

In the end, there was no sprint as Yates and Almeida came to the finish together, the yellow jersey crossing the line just ahead of his teammate and adding four seconds to his lead ahead of the decisive 15.7km time trial on Sunday.
