Discover the stunning view from Tour Montparnasse

Last Updated:  17 April 2024

The Tour Montparnasse (Montparnasse Tower) is a high-rise building overlooking the district of Montparnasse in the 15th arrondissement and borders the 6th and 14th arrondissements. Its panoramic terrace offers one of the most beautiful views over Paris .

Description of Tour Montparnasse

The Tour Montparnasse was inaugurated in 1973 and was France’s tallest skyscraper until 2011 when the Tour First in La Défense was completed.

The tower was designed by architects Eugène Beaudouin, Urbain Cassan and Louis Hoym de Marien and built from 1969 to 1972 by Campenon Bernard on the site of the former Montparnasse railway station. Its base is an almond shape of 50 m by 32 m.

The presence of the tower in central Paris has been very controversial since its construction and has been criticised for being at odds with Paris’ skyline. Following its inauguration, the municipality ruled it impossible for buildings over seven floors high to be built in the centre of Paris (“intra-muros”).

Today, the Tour Montparnasse has become a true Parisian landmark with over 5,000 people working in the offices located in the tower.

At the foot of the tower, there is a vast shopping mall and a busy metro station connected to the Gare Montparnasse where trains head off to the French Atlantic Coast and Spain.

Dimensions of the tower

The Tour Montparnasse is one of France’s tallest skyscrapers and, as of June 2021, is ranked the 13th tallest building in the European Union.

In France, the tower is the country’s second tallest building:

  • Tour First ( La Défense ): 231 m (Antenna spire)
  • Tour Montparnasse (Paris): 210 m (Roof terrace)
  • and Tour Total ( La Défense ): 190 m

In the near future, two planned towers will overtake the height of the Tour Montparnasse:

– the two Hermitage Plaza Towers ( La Défense ): 323 m (2025?)

Fun facts about the Montparnasse Tower

  • The tower has a total of 7,200 windows,
  • The structure weighs 130,000 tons,
  • There are 6 underground levels,
  • Its foundations are 70 metres deep.

The Panoramic Terraces of Tour Montparnasse

The visit of Tour Montparnasse may seem odd when suggested to tourists but the magnificent view from the top is one of Paris’ most impressive panoramas and attracts 1,2 million visitors each year. Visitors access the 56th floor with one of Europe’s fastest lifts.

The 56th floor

The 56th floor , called the “Panoramic Floor”, allows the visitor to admire the breathtaking view protected from the wind and rain. The space is heated in the winter and air-conditioned in the summer. It is accessible from the bottom floor of the tower by one of the fastest lifts in Europe (38 seconds at speeds reaching 60km per hour). The floor features interactive terminals and quizzes on Paris, a photographic exhibition on Paris, a souvenir shop and a café.

The 59th floor

The 59th floor is actually the outdoor roof terrace which, at 210 metres high, offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of Paris. In clear weather, the view extends up to 40 kilometres from the Yvelines to Charles-de-Gaulle and Orly airports and the Eastern suburbs of Val de Marne and Seine-et-Marne.

The 59th floor is only accessible by stairs from the 56th floor.

The terrace has telescopes and interesting orientation tables that help locate the famous monuments and landmarks of Paris.

In 2011, the terrace was entirely renovated with curved panes of glass surrounding the viewing point.

Day Panoramic View

The panoramic view from the roof-top terrace of the Tour Montparnasse stretches over 40 km. Most of Paris’ famous monuments and landmarks can be seen from there:

The Eiffel Tower

The great perspective leading to the Grande Arche of La Défense through the École Militaire, the Champ de Mars, the Eiffel Tower , and the Trocadéro.

The curved Unesco headquarters can also be seen to the left of the École Militaire.

The Invalids

The gilded dome of the Church at the Invalides looks like a gem in the sky of Paris…

The view reaches the Esplanade des Invalides, the Pont Alexandre III and the Petit and Grand Palais .

To the right lies the Garden of the Champs-Élysées and then the Place de la Concorde .

The Arc de Triomphe

The view of the Louvre reveals how large the palace is! It extends onwards with the famous Tuileries Garden . Behind, on top of the Montmartre Hill , a sunbeam lights up the white façade of the Sacré-Cœur basilica .

A closer look at the Samaritaine department store:

The Opéra Garnier, just above the Tuileries Garden:

Saint-Germain-des-Prés

The neighbourhood of Saint-Germain-des-Prés is clearly recognisable thanks to the old bell tower of the church.

The Rue de Rennes looks like it cut Paris in half, leading to the Seine:

To the right of the rue de Rennes stands the Saint-Sulpice church:

The Luxembourg Palace

To the North-East, the view shows the Luxembourg Garden in the foreground along with the Luxembourg Palace.

Notre-Dame de Paris and Ile de la Cité

Behind lies Île de la Cité with Notre Dame de Paris . In the distance can be seen the Hôtel de Ville (City Hall of Paris).

The central districts of Paris

The latin quarter.

You’ll get a great view of the Pantheon, the Sorbonne and the Latin Quarter, particularly in the afternoon.

South-East of Paris

The view reveals the Val de Grace, Paris Observatory, the 13th arrondissement and, beyond these, the Bois de Vincennes.

The view extends beyond the hill of Montmartre with the basilica of Saint-Denis, the Stade de France, the airports of Le Bourget and Charles de Gaulle. In the far distance, you can also see the countryside!

And street life in the Montparnasse district…

From the top of the tower, the Montparnasse cemetery reveals its great size.

The railway lines that start from the Montparnasse Train Station lead to the French Atlantic Coast (Brittany, Poitou-Charentes, Pays de la Loire, Aquitaine) and Spain.

The view offers amazing sights of street life in Paris (here Boulevard du Montparnasse and Boulevard de Port-Royal)

Night Panoramic View

Visiting the roof-terrace of the Tour Montparnasse at sunset offers one of the most enchanting views over the City of Light. Little by little, the lights are lit, revealing the famous monuments of Paris.

One of the best spots to enjoy the Eiffel Tower glittering is from the top terrace of the Montparnasse Tower, aligned perfectly with the Eiffel Tower, with the skyline of La Défense in the background. The “light show” takes place every hour for ‘5 minutes précieuses’ from nightfall until 1.00 am, on the hour.

The gilded Dôme des Invalides is lit up like a gem, and behind it stretches the vast esplanade that leads to Pont Alexandre III:

At Christmas time, you can clearly see the Big Wheel at the Tuileries and Place de la Concorde, in between the two dark areas of the Champs-Élysées and the Tuileries Gardens.

The length of Rue de Rennes winds its way through the 6th arrondissement leading to the Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. To the right, the St. Sulpice Church reveals its classical façade.

The Louvre  is seen in its entirety surmounted by the Montmartre Hill  and the Sacré-Cœur basilica .

Agree entirely! The Montparnasse Tower is an ugly blot on the landscape, but the views from the top of the tower are magnificent. I look forward to returning one day.

And make sure you climb on a sunny afternoon (the best time of the day to see all of central and eastern Paris!)

These are wonderful photos, Pierre – thank you! I always say the best thing about the Tour Montparnasse is being in it so you can’t see it! I’m going to choose a clear day when I’m in Paris to go to the top.

Merci Ellen – and choose a sunny afternoon to have the central and eastern districts of Paris in plain sight (not against-the-light)! 🙂

I’ve been there, once at day- and once at nighttime. Indeed very beautiful.

Tour Montparnasse

Spectacular views unfold from this 210m-high smoked-glass-and-steel office block, built in 1973. A speedy elevator whisks visitors up in 38 seconds to the indoor observatory on the 56th floor, with multimedia displays. Finish with a hike up the stairs to the 59th-floor open-air terrace (with a sheltered walkway) and bubbly at the terrace's Champagne bar. This venerable building is undergoing a makeover – major renovation works started in early 2020 and are due for completion in 2024.

The tower also houses the city’s highest restaurant, Ciel de Paris .

Paris’s Only Skyscraper Turns 50–And the French Still Hate It

By Dan Avery

aerial view of paris

When it was completed in 1973, Paris’s Tour Montparnasse, or Montparnasse Tower, was the tallest building in France. It was also the most reviled, “Almost universally disdained for its hulking presence and incongruous scale,” according to Metropolis Magazine . As France rebuilt after World War II, civic leaders wanted to transform Montparnasse from a slum into a vibrant business district, with the 59-story chocolate-brown skyscraper designed by Eugène Beaudouin, Urbain Cassan, and Louis Hoym de Marien at its center.

French President Georges Pompidou approved the plans in 1969 and the project was completed four years later. But in a city defined by six-story cut-stone apartment buildings from the 19th century, the glass-and-steel monolith stuck out like a 690-foot sore thumb. (The longstanding joke has been that the tower has the best view in Paris because it’s the only place from which you can’t see it.)

aerial view of paris

Completed in 1973, Paris’ Montparnasse Tower (pictured in the back right) has been despised by locals since the day it was erected.

Just four years after Tour Montparnasse was completed, Paris banned buildings over seven stories tall from the city center, forcing high rises to the outskirts. After large-scale renovations to Tour First in La Défense, Montparnasse Tower was dethroned as the city’s tallest building in 2011. (It remains the tallest building in Paris proper, however.)

Though the passage of time has softened Parisians’ views of other controversial structures—including the Eiffel Tower, Louvre Pyramid, and Centre Pompidou—opprobrium for this modernist superstructure endures. In 2014, mayoral candidate Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet called it “an urban catastrophe” and proposed tearing it down . Of course, not everyone loathes the Montparnasse Tower: French daredevil Alain Robert scaled it twice, in 1995 and 2015.

And there have been plenty of high profile tenants over the years, including presidents François Mitterrand, Jacques Chirac, and Emmanuel Macron. There are also the throngs of tourists who flock to the rooftop terrace for unparalleled views of the City of Light. Superstar architect Daniel Libeskind has also defended the building or, rather, “the idea it represents.” “Parisians panicked when they saw it, and when they abandoned the tower they also abandoned the idea of a high-density sustainable city,” Libeskind wrote in a 2017 piece in The New York Times Magazine . “Maybe Tour Montparnasse is not a work of genius, but it signified a notion of what the city of the future will have to be.”

Tourists watching Paris skyline from Tour Montparnasse 56 viewing gallery Paris France

There is an old joke in Paris that the top of Montparnasse Tower has the prettiest view in the French capital. Not because of its breathtaking views of the Eiffel Tower, but because it is the only place where you do not have to see the skyscraper itself.

Sadly, contract disputes have led to the terrace’s closure and appear to have nixed any formal celebration of the building’s 50th anniversary. But the observatory has unveiled a new VR tour that allows visitors to travel through history and soar through the city skies.

The saga of Tour Montparnasse isn’t finished: In 2017, Nouvelle AOM, a consortium of three French firms, beat out Studio Gang, OMA, and MAD Architects in an international competition to redesign its exterior. The $330 million makeover, slated to be completed in time for the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, will transform the chocolate-brown colossus into a clear glass spire and an “icon of the 21st-century energy revolution,” AOM said .

In addition to a new façade, the project will add energy-efficient upgrades, hanging gardens, a rooftop greenhouse, and photovoltaic panels that will provide energy for half of the building’s lighting systems.

Talk about pocket aces.

Frank Bensel Jr. made history Friday morning at the U.S. Senior Open, carding back-to-back aces in the second round at Newport Country Club.

Bensel carded a hole-in-one on the par-3 fourth from 184 cards before stepping up to the tee on the par-3 fifth and rolling in another ace from 203 yards.

“So the first one was great, so that got me under par for the day," Bensel said after his round. "And then the second one, I just couldn’t believe it. To even think that that could happen was amazing." The aces marked the 13th and 14th aces of his career.

“It was like an out-of-body experience,” Bensel said. “I was more excited than I wanted to be.”

Bensel, whose career has included club professional stints in New York and Florida, opened with a 5-over 75. On Friday – despite the two holes-in-ones – he was 1-over for his first nine holes.

The Jupiter, Florida, resident has played six PGA TOUR events in his career including the 2009 U.S. Open at Oakmont and this year’s 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla, where he missed the cut.

The last time someone made two aces in a round on TOUR was Brian Harman in 2015 at Plainfield Country Club.

Taylor Swift's boyfriend surprised 89,000 fans inside Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday by joining dancers Jan Ravnik and Kameron Saunders to revive the singer after she fell to the ground during "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived."

Kelce picked up Taylor Swift and carried her to the bright red lipstick couch before he, Ravnik and Saunders attempted to revive her so she could sing, "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart."

The tight end attended all three nights in London sharing a VIP tent with a slew of stars including Sir Paul McCartney, Jon Bon Jovi, Hugh Grant, Cate Blanchett, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher and Phoebe Waller-Bridge. His brother Jason and sister-in-law Kylie also traded friendship bracelets and posed for pictures with Swifties.

Swift's boyfriend hinted toward the fire London shows in April while promoting his concert festival Kelce Jam.

When asked what show can't be missed in Europe he announced the British capital along with her first European stop where she unveiled the new "Tortured Poets" set.

"Man, I'll tell you what, I think the London shows," he said to Entertainment Tonight. "I think she's at Wembley eight times, which is mind-blowing that she can do that many shows in one stadium and fill that thing up. I played in Wembley once, and I don't even think we filled that thing all the way up. And London's always an amazing city. Paris is an amazing city."

Swift heads to Dublin, Ireland, next.

Taylor Swift performed at the third and final night of the Eras tour ‘s London stop on Sunday evening, during which a surprise guest joined her on stage: her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce .

Kelce, dressed in a tailcoat and top hat, literally swept the pop star off her feet during the “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” transition of Swift’s show at Wembley Stadium. He then performed a short routine alongside Swift’s dancers, who were wearing the same attire as Kelce.

After Abrams’ departure, Swift then did the other surprise song of the night, an acoustic version of the “1989” favorite “Out of the Woods,” which was briefly mashed up at the end with another track from that album, “Clean.”

Although he didn’t count as an official special guest, Paul McCartney became a trending topic on X when he was spotted and filmed dancing to “But Daddy I Love Him!” on the floor of the arena.

Sunday night marks the last of three shows at Wembley Stadium, though Swift will return to Wembley Stadium in August for five more shows to end the European leg of the Eras tour.

At her first London show on Friday night, Swift  took a selfie with Prince William , who celebrated his 42nd birthday at the concert alongside children George and Charlotte.

In a  post on X , Grant said: “Dear @taylorswift13, You have an incredible show, an amazing and v hospitable team and excellent if gigantic boyfriend (#tequilashots.). Thanks so much from one ageing London boy, wife and thrilled 8 year old #halfgirlhalfbracelet.”

Protestors invade PGA Tour final round at Travelers Championship

CROMWELL, CONNECTICUT - JUNE 23: Climate change protestors are ushered off the 18th green by police officers during the final round of the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands on June 23, 2024 in Cromwell, Connecticut. (Photo by James Gilbert/Getty Images)

Climate change protestors invaded the final round of the PGA Tour event on Sunday.

The Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn., had to be briefly delayed by the group that ran out from the crowd on the 18th green.

The drama began on the 18th hole, with Tom Kim trailing Scottie Scheffler by a stroke and needing a birdie — and Scheffler par — to force a playoff. Kim hit what had to be one of the best approach shots of his life from 131 yards out — the third bounce on the green landed an inch to the right of the cup, and settled 10 feet away.

As Scheffler was lining up his first putt five protestors stormed the 18th green from all angles. They were quickly apprehended by local police and pinned to the green before being taken away, but not before leaving white and red colored residue on the green.

Kim made his birdie putt to force the playoff, but tournament officials determined to move the pin position for the playoff, taking it closer to the front edge of the green and away from the most significant damage.

“The security guards were tackling people and people were getting arrested, like it’s just, it’s really hard to see nowadays,” Kim said. “… It kind of felt like it took my mind off of the moment and just kind of realized what was happening and obviously even though those people did something bad, you still don’t want them to get hurt … the police are trying to protect the players and stuff, I get it, but you still don’t want people to get hurt and I think it just kind of personally just took my mind away from golf a little bit and worried about something else.”

Extinction Rebellion took credit for the protest, citing a lightning strike that injured two fans during Saturday’s round at Travelers as an example of “increasingly unpredictable and extreme weather conditions.”

“We are all watching the climate catastrophe unfold at warp speed. Our relatively mild disruption of the Travelers Championship calls attention to nature’s much more severe and long-lasting disruptions,” said Miles Grant, a spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion, in a statement.
