List of Places to Visit near Dehradun

If you love to travel, then you should definitely consider visiting these incredible places near Dehradun for truly amazing experiences.

Robber’s Cave

Hemkund sahib, tapkeshwar mahadev temple, rajaji national park.

Robber's Cave, located 8km from Dehradun, is a stunning natural wonder that makes for a fantastic picnic spot and tourist destination. Nestled amidst Uttarakhand's gorgeous scenery, this unique cave formation was actually created by a river flowing underground!

The British named it Robber's Cave, believing bandits used to hide out inside. But locally, it's known as Guchhupani, and people have flocked here for ages to admire the caves and cool waters - especially in the summer! Formed by natural erosion over time, the Cave stretches about 600 metres with icy cold water flowing through parts of it. There's something magical about wandering through the dark cave passages as sunlight filters through openings.

Dhanaulti is a fast-emerging gem of a destination in Uttarakhand. At 2,250m altitude, it provides a peaceful, relaxed vibe away from crowded cities and pollution.   Surrounded by thick forests of deodar, oak and rhododendron trees, Dhanaulti is a great starting point for scenic treks into the mountains. You can hike to temples like Surkanda Devi or to stunning spots like Chandrabadni. Not only this adventure lovers will also enjoy activities like rappelling and ziplining offered by local resorts and camps. Dhanaulti also has popular skating areas to enjoy.

You can plan to visit this place near Dehradun for a weekend getaway. Further, when winter hits, the landscape transforms into a snowy wonderland perfect for holiday trips. Whether you want nature treks, mountain views, or just a serene escape, Dhanaulti has it. The laidback town offers a breather from busy urban life amidst Himalayan forests and peaks.

Rishikesh

Rishikesh has legitimately earned the title of India's Yoga Capital. With the serene Ganga River as its backdrop, everything about the town radiates peace. You can feel the calm, spiritual aura embracing you from the moment you arrive. It's a magnet for yogis, spiritual seekers, yoga teachers and students who flock here from across the globe. You'll find ashrams filled with trainers guiding students in yoga and meditation. The ancient temples resound with the chanting of mantras by learned pandits.

Foreigners often come to Rishikesh to engage in the traditional lifestyle - living simply, learning yoga by the river banks, and absorbing spiritual wisdom. They return home with a renewed sense of meaning and connection. Apart from this, you can also enjoy activities like Camping, bonfire, Kayaking, Mountain cycling or cliff jumping at Rishikesh. It is one of the best places to visit near Dehradun within 100 kms.

Nag Tibba, a hidden gem nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas, offers a unique and invigorating experience for nature enthusiasts and trekkers. The mesmerising trek takes you through dense forests, charming villages, and panoramic vistas, culminating in breathtaking sunrise and sunset views over the snow-capped peaks. The sense of accomplishment as you reach the summit is truly gratifying. Camping under a star-studded sky adds a touch of magic to the adventure. Nag Tibba promises a rejuvenating escape, where every step unveils the beauty of nature and rewards you with a sense of awe and tranquillity.

Chakrata is another hidden gem that promises a rejuvenating getaway amidst pristine nature. As you enter this quaint cantonment town, you are enveloped by the fragrance of cedar and pine trees from forests that stretch as far as the eye can see. Dotted with gushing waterfalls and snow-capped peaks in the distance, these tranquil surroundings are one of the best places to visit in Dehradun, perfect for destressing.

The options for scenic trekking here seem endless - be it an invigorating hike up to Deoban to glimpse the Himalayan panorama or following the paths of ancient sages to the meditative cave at Budher. From camping under the stars to rappelling down hillsides, Chakrata is a paradise for the adventurous at heart.

The scenic town of Lansdowne is a total natural paradise. Its breathtaking mountain vistas and untouched surroundings make it a popular holiday spot in Uttarakhand. Lansdowne is famed for its oak and pine forests - camping under those stars is a must! Hiking through the woods is rejuvenating. And be sure to check out top attractions like Tiffin Top Point for amazing valley views, St. Johns Church for its historic architecture, and Bhim Pakora with its fascinating mythological stone carvings. Don't miss out on an opportunity to experience magic in Lansdowne!

Situated amid the Himalayas, Hemkund Sahib is one of the pious Sikh shrines. With the backdrop of mesmerising white Himalayas, it is the lone octagonal Gurudwara in the world. No matter the season, for most of the time, this Gurudwara remains under the white robe of snow and each year, a number of devotees throng to Hemkund Sahib to seek the blessings of the divine power. Since no vehicle is allowed there to cross the uneven terrains. Do plan to visit HEmkund sahib for a peaceful trip and seek the blessing of the lord.

Mussoorie

Mussoorie offers breathtaking vistas of the Himalayas and Doon Valley from its hilltop setting. The panoramas are unmatched! Its cooler climate, especially in summer, provides a perfect respite from the plains. The hills are blanketed in mist for a magical effect. Excellent walks through lush forests to waterfalls and to viewpoints like Lal Tibba make Mussoorie ideal for rejuvenating nature strolls. It's just a comfortable 1-hour drive from Dehradun, making it a popular weekend tourist spot near Dehradun. With pristine nature, charming sights and a relaxed ambience, Mussoorie is a rejuvenating tourist spot to experience the beauty of the Garhwal Himalayas.

In Dehradun, there's a cherished temple called Tapkeshwar, dedicated to Lord Shiva, attracting a multitude of visitors. Enveloped by nature's grandeur, the temple's standout feature is its sacred Shivlinga, carefully housed within a cave. Nestled beside lush forests, the cave gracefully releases droplets of water onto the Shivling, creating a captivating and mesmerising sight. This accessible temple, merely six kilometres from the city, holds a special place. Its grand celebration happens during Shivratri, drawing thousands of pilgrims who come to honour the deity. Adding to its charm are the cool sulphur-water springs, inviting devotees to cleanse themselves before entering the temple's sanctum.

Spanning an impressive 820 square kilometres across Dehradun, Pauri, and Saharanpur, the Rajaji National Park stands as a significant Tiger Reserve and National Park in India. Nestled at the foothills of the Shivalik Hills, it's the second tiger reserve in the state, following Corbett National Park. Majestic creatures like Tigers and Leopards reign at the top of the park's food chain, while a variety of other fascinating animals also call Rajaji home, including Asian Elephants, Himalayan black bears, and more. Embarking on a safari adventure here presents incredible opportunities to witness these rare and magnificent species in their natural habitat, making Rajaji one of the top-notch places to visit near Dehradun.

Life Stories by Veena Patil

‘Exchange a coin and you make no difference but exchange a thought and you can change the world.’ Hi! I’m Veena Patil... Fortunate enough to have answered my calling some 35 years ago and content enough to be in this business of delivering happiness almost all my life. Tourism indeed moulds you into a minimalist... Memories are probably our only possession. And memories are all about sharing experiences, ideas and thoughts. Life is simple, but it becomes easy when we share. Places and people are two things that interest me the most. While places have taken care of themselves, here’s my podcast, which I consider to be a great platform, through which I can share some interesting stories I live and love on a daily basis with all you wonderful people out there. I hope you enjoy the journey... Let’s go, celebrate life!
