Why are people protesting against tourists in Barcelona?

Thousands of protesters have hit the streets of central Barcelona to denounce mass tourism and its effect on Spain's most visited city, the latest in a series of similar marches around the country.

The protesters stopped in front of hotels and restaurants to confront tourists, symbolically taping off some businesses and carrying signs reading "Barcelona is not for sale" and "Tourists go home".

Footage showed demonstrators shooting colourful water pistols at tourists eating outdoors at restaurants, with some soggy diners awkwardly shuffling to a different table.

"I have nothing against tourism, but here in Barcelona we are suffering from an excess of tourism that has made our city unliveable," said Jordi Guiu, a 70-year-old sociologist.

The group of protesters marching along a waterfront district in Barcelona on Saturday was some 2,800 strong, police said.

Here's what has led to the locals' frustrations bubbling over in the incredibly popular travel destination.

Housing costs in the heart of tensions

The key driver behind the protests is the rising cost of housing due to mass tourism, while the negative effects on local commerce and working conditions also play a role.

Housing costs in Barcelona have increased significantly, with rents up 68 per cent and the cost of buying a house up 38 per cent in the past decade , according to local authorities.

A woman sitting at a restaurant table holds her hands in front of her mouth as protesters walk past

In the past year alone, rents in the city rose by 18 per cent, according to property website Idealista.

"Local shops are closing to make way for stores that do not serve the needs of neighbourhoods. People cannot afford their rents," Isa Miralles, a 35-year-old musician who lives in the Barceloneta district, told AFP.

Short-term holiday rentals under scrutiny

Barcelona's mayor Jaume Collboni announced last month that it was banning tourist apartment rentals by 2028 to combat the "negative effects of mass tourism".

The plan is to scrap the licenses of the 10,000-plus apartments currently approved as short-term rentals and put them back on the local housing market .

"We are confronting what we believe is Barcelona's largest problem," Mr Collboni told a city government event.

The announcement could lead to a legal battle and is opposed by Barcelona's tourist apartments association, APARTUR, which says it will feed the black market.

"Collboni is making a mistake that will lead to [higher] poverty and unemployment," APARTUR said in a statement.

Inside Airbnb, a website providing data about the impact of the vacation rentals platform on residential communities, says there are over 18,000 listings in Barcelona .

More than half of the listings were entire homes or apartments , as opposed to a host renting out a room or section of a property they live in, according to the website. About one in three were unlicensed .

Nearly three quarters of hosts in the city had multiple listings .

Restrictions on short-term rentals have been announced by local governments around the world as residents increasingly get priced out of popular travel destinations due to gentrification and owner preference for lucrative tourist rentals over long-term rentals for locals.

Tourism-reliant economy questioned

Spain has long been a popular holiday destination for its warm weather, rich history and sunny beaches.

But the country is struggling to balance promoting tourism, a key driver of its economy, and addressing citizens' concerns over housing availability and costs.

Spain was the second most-visited country in the world in 2023, behind France, according to World Tourism rankings by the United Nations World Tourism Organization.

It received 85 million foreign visitors in 2023, an increase of nearly 20 per cent from the previous year, according to the National Statistics Institute.

The most-visited region of Spain was Catalonia, with 18 million foreign visitors. Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia.

The coastal city alone, with its many internationally famous sites such as La Sagrada Familia, received more than 12 million tourists last year, according to local authorities.

A toruist looks through the window of a restaurant at protesters, one holds a sign saying "Dear tourist balconing is fun"

The protesters in Barcelona are aware of the importance of tourism to the economy, but want to see that change.

A protester told Reuters one of the reasons she was attending the demonstration was to protest "against the economic model based on mass tourism."

"This model makes us poorer and more dependent," said Nuria Suarez.

Tensions on the rise around Spain

Barcelona isn't the only place in Spain where tourism is creating tension in the local community.

The Barcelona protests come after similar demonstrations in other tourist hotspots such as Malaga, Palma de Mallorca and the Canary Islands, some attended by tens of thousands of people.

Seasonal hospitality workers struggle to find accommodation, with many resorting to sleeping in caravans or even their cars.

Protestors walk down a street holding signs that read "digital nomads go home"

The national government is taking notice, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announcing last week that the government would create a registry of holiday rental properties in a bid to limit the number of listings .

Housing Minister Isabel Rodriguez said the registry would be ready by the end of 2025 at the earliest. When that happens, online platforms will have to provide data about hosts to verify if they are allowed to rent their homes.

The government is also looking to take steps to curb mid-term rentals ranging from one to 11 months, and may give neighbours in apartment blocks a say over whether an owner can list their property on platforms, the minister said.

But some don't feel the measures are enough.

"The rise of tourist rentals is a major problem and these measures are not serious," said Victor Palomo, leader of the Madrid Tenants' Union after meeting with the housing minister.

"It can't be that it's only neighbours that are in charge of regulating them," he said, calling for landlords to pay more taxes.

See damage left by Hurricane Beryl in Barbados as it sustains Category 5 status

travel bug water st

After making landfall in Grenada, Hurricane Beryl jumped from a Category 4 to a Category 5 hurricane Monday night with winds increasing to 160 mph.

Hurricane Beryl is expected to bring life-threatening winds and a storm surge to Jamaica on Wednesday, and hurricane hunter aircraft have reported little change in the storm's strength over the past few hours, according to an update issued Tuesday morning from the National Hurricane Center.

Beryl tore through the Windward Islands  on Monday after making landfall on Grenada’s Carriacou Island as a Category 4 storm at 11:10 a.m., according to the hurricane center. The hurricane had 150 mph winds when its eye made landfall on Carriacou.

It is forecast to remain a powerful hurricane as it continues to move across the Caribbean Sea, and areas in Belize, the Yucatan Peninsula, Cuba and the southwestern Gulf of Mexico should continue to monitor its progress, the National Hurricane Center said.

Here are the latest images from the path of Hurricane Beryl.

What Causes Water Bugs?

Signs of water bugs.

  • How to Get Rid of Water Bugs
  • Water Bugs vs. Oriental Cockroaches

How to Prevent Water Bugs

  • When to Call a Pro

The term "water bug" is often the nickname for an indoor roach called the Oriental cockroach ( Blatta orientalis) but there's also a true water bug (infraorder Nepomorpha ) that prefers to stay outdoors. Oriental cockroaches earned their nickname because they tend to hang out in wet environments, including parts of your home. They travel to higher floors in apartment buildings by use of the water pipes and they prefer moist, dirty hiding spots such as garbage chutes and sewage pipes. Oriental cockroaches do not cause structural damage but severe situations can lead to a distinctive, musky, "roachy" odor.

Because they hang out in such nasty environments, Oriental cockroaches carry diseases such as gastroenteritis. Their droppings and cast skins can cause allergic and asthmatic reactions in sensitive individuals. If you are dealing with a cockroach situation, be sure to use proper PPE (personal protective equipment), and don't be afraid to call a professional if you need help.

What Do Water Bugs Look Like?

The answer to this question depends on whether you are discussing the Oriental cockroach or the true water bug. Generally, though, anything called a water bug is tan to dark brown, with a rounded or beetle-like shape, and a hardback. However, an Oriental roach has antennae and a true water bug will have pinchers in front of its head.

ViniSouza128 / Getty Images

Goldfinch4ever / Getty Images

It's rare to have a true water bug in your home. However, Oriental cockroaches (widely known as water bugs) can enter the home in a variety of ways:

  • Being carried in on food packages
  • Coming in with laundry from the laundromat
  • Crawling under the doorway
  • Climbing through air ducts
  • Scaling water pipes

Large populations of Oriental cockroaches have been found in garbage chutes and in dark, damp areas where they can hide and find moisture, especially in a crawlspace or basement with an unresolved leak. They are not likely to wander far from their harborage area. This means that if you're finding them feeding inside, they're likely hiding nearby, too.

Remember, if you're finding water bugs inside, you're likely dealing with Oriental cockroaches, not true water bugs. You may be noticing the following signs:

  • Sighting black insects around the home
  • A wet, musty odor
  • Egg casings left around your house

If you have a severe Oriental cockroach issue, you're likely seeing the pests themselves inside your home. They repopulate incredibly quickly. Adult females can live anywhere from 34 to 181 days. During this time, they lay an average of eight egg casings (sometimes up to 18 casings), with each casing containing an average of 14 baby roaches inside. Oriental cockroach females deposit their egg casings near food sources, so keep that in mind while you're searching.

If you are experiencing a cockroach issue and you live in an apartment , it's important to get the entire building involved in control efforts. Cockroaches can quickly become a building-wide issue. There's a chance the cockroaches you're seeing came from a different unit to begin with. Involving the entire building (including management) will give you the best chance of tackling the issue once and for all.

6 Ways to Get Rid of Water Bugs in Your Home

Address sanitation issues.

Oriental cockroaches (also known as water bugs, though they are not true water bugs) stick to three main food groups: garbage, drain scum, and other grimy things.

When trying to deal with Oriental cockroaches, seek to clean up any possible food and water sources. This includes addressing garbage piles, cleaning out garbage chutes, scrubbing drains, and even raking up leaves from around the foundation of the building. If it's something that could provide an Oriental cockroach with rotting organic material or moisture, it needs to go.

Fix Leaks Quickly

Given their nickname, "water bug," it's clear these creepy crawlies seek to be near water sources. Make sure you're not providing any water for the cockroaches around your home. Large numbers of Oriental cockroaches have been known to pop up in basements, crawlspaces, and even in garages where water accumulates, so reduce the chances of cockroach activity around your home by fixing leaks quickly.

Not only will this reduce water sources for these water bugs, but moisture-damaged wood can attract other pests, as well.

Seal Them Out

Oriental cockroaches have been known to hang out in wall voids and empty spaces around decks. If you have found them around, take the time to seal off any areas they are accessing with caulk. This will help reduce the likeliness of them making their way into your space.

Keep Plants and Shrubs Maintained

This may not seem like a priority, but keeping the shrubbery and plants around your home trimmed back is one of the best things you can do to avoid attracting water bugs, cockroaches, and other types of pests. When plants and shrubs are allowed to grow too close to the house, they can block vents. This restricts airflow and can create moisture issues under your home. To avoid creating a local insect watering hole under your house, make sure your vents can properly circulate air.

Perform Chemical Treatment

There are numerous chemical treatments available when it comes to cockroaches. If necessary, many homeowners can attempt chemical control by starting with cockroach bait. Baits can be very effective against cockroaches, especially when placed correctly.

Remove Possible Food Sources

Avoid leaving out any excess food or food-related debris that could become food sources for water bugs. Clean up excess pet food once your pets are done eating. And finally, stay on top of your dirty dishes or at least rinse them throughly if you don't have time to clean.

True Water Bugs vs. Oriental Cockroaches

If you're finding these pests inside, they're most likely Oriental cockroaches, not true water bugs. Still, knowing precisely whether you're dealing with true water bugs or oriental cockroaches inside can help you better address the issue.

True Water Bugs

Commonly confused with cockroaches due to their similar appearance, true water bugs are tan to brown and primarily live in slow-moving bodies of water such as ponds, lakes, or creeks where vegetation is present. They need this vegetation for harborage and hunting, and they can grow to be more than 4 inches long depending on the species.

Also known as electric light bugs, these insects are drawn to lights left on at night and will occasionally end up in a swimming pool or backyard pond during their nighttime flights toward a distant porch light. They rarely seek shelter indoors; it's just that they tend to follow the moisture, which may accidently lead them indoors.

If by rare chance you do have a true water bug in your pool, be careful. The giant water bug is also known as the "toe-biter," as it is likely to bite between the toes if stepped on. Due to the paralyzing venom it uses for hunting, its bite can be incredibly painful and can cause lasting damage to some individuals.

Oriental Cockroaches

These pests are commonly referred to as water bugs because of the damp areas they choose to hide in. While technically very dark brown, their appearance is so dark that it has earned them another common nickname: the black beetle. If you are finding water bugs inside, especially if there's more than one of them, you're likely dealing with Oriental cockroaches.

These insects are slow, do not climb very well, and are not nearly as skittish as other types of cockroaches. The males have fully developed wings but do not fly, and the females do not have fully developed wings, though you can see a small node where the wing would be attached.

Typically found outside

Live in slow-moving bodies of water

Tan to brown

Has pinchers on its head

Found indoors more often

Live in damp areas

Very dark brown

Has antennae on its head

Reduce pest activity around your home by making sure lights (exterior and interior) are turned off at night when not in use. Not only will this reduce the chances of any type of water bug landing in your pool or pond, but it will also reduce general flying insect activity around your home as well as the spiders that come hoping to catch a late meal.

When to Call a Professional to Treat a Water Bug Infestation

If you have a severe Oriental roach or even a rare true water bug issue in your home and you don't think baiting will be enough to control it, it may be time to call in a professional pest expert. Be sure to find a licensed company that specializes in Integrated Pest Management.

Getting rid of water bugs is fairly difficult, especially if the infestation is moderate to severe. It's critical that you act quickly before things get out of hand.

Boric acid is one of the strongest methods at water bug removal, as it kills them on contact.

Oriental cockroaches are black, shiny, and about one inch long. They can survive in much colder conditions than other cockroaches.

Some types of true water bugs, part of the infraorder Nepomorpha, do bite, and their bite can cause damage. Oriental cockroaches do not bite, but they should be addressed quickly. They can carry disease and cause allergic reactions.

See live map of Texas road conditions, closures amid power outages, flooding from Beryl

travel bug water st

Hurricane Beryl landing on Texas coast has caused several road closures and delays in the Houston area and beyond.

More than  1 million customers have lost power within hours of Beryl's landfall , as  CenterPoint Energy in Houston reported. Rising waters swiftly led to street closures throughout Houston and flood warnings were issued for a large portion of the Texas coast.

Here is a look at where road closures and power outages are in the state.

Map: Driving conditions, road closures in Texas

Houston traffic cameras, tips for driving in heavy rain, strong winds and flood conditions.

Texas Department of Insurance urges drivers to be careful when driving in poor weather conditions. Here are some tips from them.

  • Avoid puddles : Driving into puddles or low-lying areas where rainwater collects, such as dips under rail or highway bridges or near streams, can cause vehicles to hydroplane out of control.
  • Drive in the middle lanes : Staying on higher ground is a good safety measure, especially during heavy rains. Rainwater often pools on the outer edges of roads, which can create hazardous driving conditions, including hydroplaning. It's always best to drive with caution and avoid flooded areas whenever possible.
  • Keep headlights on: Using your vehicle's headlights in the rain, even during daylight, is a crucial safety measure. It enhances your visibility to other drivers and improves your ability to see the road ahead. This practice can significantly reduce the risk of accidents in rainy conditions.
  • Use turn signals early: Giving plenty of notice to other drivers before slowing down to take a turn is essential for road safety. Signaling early and clearly allows other drivers to anticipate your actions and adjust their driving accordingly, reducing the risk of collisions.
  • Don't slam the breaks: In bad weather, it's important to brake safely. Remove your foot from the accelerator and apply the brakes lightly to stop. Always keep an eye out for brake lights ahead to anticipate any sudden stops or slowdowns by other drivers. This cautious approach helps maintain control of your vehicle and reduces the risk of skidding or losing traction.
  • Avoid sharp turns : Quick driving maneuvers can lead to skids and accidents.

Hurricane Beryl Batters Jamaica as 2 Other Islands Lie in Ruin

The powerful storm, which devastated communities in the eastern Caribbean earlier this week, was headed next to the Cayman Islands.

A view from above of seaside homes wrecked by a storm.

By Emiliano Rodríguez Mega and Maria Abi-Habib

Reporting from Mexico City

Jamaica was still being hammered by strong winds and heavy rain early Thursday as Hurricane Beryl passed its southern coast, having claimed at least one life on the island. The powerful storm, which devastated communities in the eastern Caribbean earlier in the week, was headed next to the Cayman Islands.

Beryl, which was downgraded after midnight to a Category 3 storm, has killed at least eight people in total. Virtually every building on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique in Grenada, where the storm made landfall on Monday as a Category 4 hurricane, lay in ruins, with marinas and a hospital destroyed, rooftops torn away and tree trunks snapped like matchsticks across the drenched earth.

“We have to rebuild from the ground up,” said Dickon Mitchell, the prime minister of Grenada.

Beryl was expected to remain a dangerous hurricane as it passed just south of the Caymans, where forecasters said the storm surge could raise water levels by up to four feet.

In Mexico, officials warned that the country could be hit twice in the coming days. Most of the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, from Puerto Costa Maya to Cancun, were under a hurricane warning as of early Thursday. By the weekend, Beryl is expected to emerge into the Gulf of Mexico, where it could restrengthen into a hurricane.

In Jamaica, hundreds of thousands of households lost power, and several communities were flooded. Officials warned that the full extent of the damage was not yet clear. Beryl was the strongest storm to approach the island in over a decade. The last time a major hurricane passed within 70 miles of Jamaica was in 2007, and it has been even longer since one made landfall.

The first confirmed death in Jamaica because of the storm came when a woman was killed as a tree fell on her house in the western parish of Hanover, the head of the country’s disaster agency, Richard Thompson, said.

A rescue team was also searching for a 20-year-old man who had been swept away in a gully in Kingston after trying to retrieve a ball that he and friends had been playing with, according to a senior police officer, Michael Phipps.

In Grenada, officials said about 98 percent of the buildings on Carriacou and Petite Martinique, where 9,000 to 10,000 people live in total, had been damaged or destroyed, including Carriacou’s main health facility, the Princess Royal Hospital. Crops were ravaged, and fallen trees and utility poles littered the streets.

The natural environment also took a beating.

“There is literally no vegetation left anywhere on the island of Carriacou,” Mr. Mitchell said after visiting the islands. “The mangroves are totally destroyed.”

The death toll may rise as recovery and aid efforts continue. Officials have reported three deaths from the storm in Grenada, two of them in Carriacou. Another was reported in the Caribbean country of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, said on Tuesday that three deaths had been reported in that country’s north.

In Jamaica, emergency teams were beginning to clear the roads blocked by fallen trees, debris and utility poles in several flood-ravaged communities as Beryl moved away from the island. Some 80 roads were affected, officials said. Many houses and businesses had lost their roofs. Recovery efforts were being affected by still-torrential rainfall and gusty winds.

Electricity was restored to some areas, and Jamaicans were trying to calculate their losses. The storm pummeled the south central parish of St. Elizabeth, called the “breadbasket” of Jamaica for its role in supplying key crops.

“We have had some major damage,” said Lenworth Fulton, who heads the largest farming group in Jamaica. “Crops such as yam, coconut, coffee, carrots have been badly affected.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Prime Minister Andrew Holness of Jamaica said nearly 500 people had taken refuge in shelters across the island.

And the hurricane had ripped away a section of the roof of Jamaica’s main airport, the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, which closed on Tuesday night.

Jamaica’s transport minister, Daryl Vaz, said a plan was being prepared to figure out how the airport would operate while the jet bridge roof for boarding and arrivals was being repaired. The storm was expected to approach the Cayman Islands overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning.

In the Caymans, most businesses had started closing their doors as residents lined up for last-minute purchases, enduring painfully slow commutes through dense traffic.

All hotels on the island had also activated their emergency plans, and flights had already evacuated more than 1,000 people.

Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly of the Caymans said the shelter-in-place order would begin on Wednesday evening.

“Let us remain calm, stay prepared, look after one another as we face this challenge together,” she said in a news briefing. “We can minimize the impact of Hurricane Beryl and protect our community if we do it together.”

But the government’s actions did not put Puspa Rumba-Marcum, 40, at ease.

“Despite what the leaders say, I’m really scared,” said Ms. Rumba-Marcum, a hairstylist originally from Nepal. “I’m not sure if Cayman is well prepared for this.”

Already, the storm has set records as the first Category 4 hurricane — and then the first Category 5 storm — to form in the Atlantic Ocean so early in the season. A recent study found that with ocean temperatures rising, hurricanes in the Atlantic have become likelier to grow into a major storm within just 24 hours.

Mr. Mitchell, Grenada’s prime minister, said that the powerful storm was a direct result of global warming, and that Grenada and countries like it were on the front line of the climate crisis.

“We are no longer prepared to accept that it’s OK for us to constantly suffer significant, clearly demonstrated loss and damage arising from climatic events and be expected to rebuild year after year while the countries that are responsible for creating this situation — and exacerbating this situation — sit idly by,” he said.

Hurricane Beryl leaves trail of devastation in southeast Caribbean islands: "The situation is grim"

Updated on: July 2, 2024 / 11:37 PM EDT / CBS/AP

As Hurricane Beryl barreled through the Caribbean Sea on Tuesday, rescue crews in the southeast Caribbean fanned out across the region to determine the extent of the damage that the storm inflicted after making landfall on Carriacou, an island in Grenada, with Category 4 strength .

Three people were reported killed in Grenada and Carriacou and another in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, officials said. Two other deaths were reported in northern Venezuela, where five people are missing, officials said. Some 25,000 people in that area also were affected by heavy rainfall from Beryl.

One fatality in Grenada occurred after a tree fell on a house, Kerryne James, minister of climate resilience, environment and renewable energy, told The Associated Press.

She said the nearby islands of Carriacou and Petit Martinique sustained the greatest damage, with water, food and baby formula a priority.

An emergency team was expected to travel to Carriacou, where Beryl flattened scores of homes and businesses.

"The situation is grim," Grenadian Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell told a news conference Tuesday. "There is no power, and there is almost complete destruction of homes and buildings on the island. The roads are not passable, and in many instances they are cut off because of the large quantity of debris strewn all over the streets."

Mitchell added: "The possibility that there may be more fatalities remains a grim reality as movement is still highly restricted."

Meanwhile, Ralph Gonsalves, prime minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, promised to rebuild the archipelago in a statement early Tuesday. He noted that 90% of homes on Union Island  were severely damaged or destroyed, and that "similar levels of devastation" were expected on the islands of Myreau and Canouan.

"Hurricane Beryl has left in its wake immense destruction," Gonsalves said.

Damage to businesses along the waterfront is seen after Hurricane Beryl passed in Soufriere, St. Lucia, July 1, 2024.

Several people evacuated Union Island via ferry and arrived at the Kingstown Ferry Terminal in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines on Tuesday.

Sharon DeRoche, one of the evacuees, said Union Island is in a terrible state. She bore the hurricane in her bathroom before she fled. "It was a hard four hours battling with six of us in that little area," she said.

Streets from St. Lucia island south to Grenada were strewn with tree limbs, downed power lines and other debris scattered by winds up to 150 mph — just shy of a Category 5. The storm snapped banana trees in half and killed cows that lay in green pastures as if they were sleeping. Homes made of tin and plywood tilted precariously nearby.

"Right now, I'm real heartbroken," said Vichelle Clark King as she surveyed her damaged shop in the Barbadian capital of Bridgetown that was filled with sand and water.

Beryl was  forecast to start losing intensity on Tuesday but still be near major hurricane strength when it passes near or over Jamaica early Wednesday, and over or near the Cayman Islands late Wednesday or early Thursday. It is expected to still be a hurricane when it approaches Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday night, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

The center said Beryl was expected to bring life-threatening winds and storm surge to Jamaica, where officials warned residents in flood-prone areas to prepare for evacuation.

"I am encouraging all Jamaicans to take the hurricane as a serious threat," Prime Minister Andrew Holness said in a public address late Monday. "It is, however, not a time to panic."

As of Tuesday evening, Beryl was about 125 miles southeast of Isla Beata in the Dominican Republic and 420 miles southeast of Kingston, Jamaica. It had maximum sustained winds of 155 mph and was moving northwest at 22 mph.

Fishing vessels damaged by Hurricane Beryl in Barbados

The last strong hurricane to hit the southeast Caribbean was Hurricane Ivan 20 years ago, which killed dozens of people in Grenada.

Grenadian resident Roy O'Neale, 77, recalled how he lost his home to Ivan and built back stronger, with his current home sustaining minimal damage from Hurricane Beryl.

"I felt the wind whistling, and then for about two hours straight, it was really, really terrifying at times," he said by phone. "Branches of trees were flying all over the place."

People clear debris from a street flooded by Hurricane Beryl

Hundreds of people hunkered in shelters across the southeast Caribbean, including 50 adults and 20 children who huddled inside a school in Grenada.

"Maybe some of them thought they could have survived in their homes, but when they realized the severity of it ... they came for cover," said Urban Mason, a retired teacher who served as the shelter's manager. "People tend to be complacent."

One of the homes that Beryl damaged belongs to the parents of U.N. Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell, who is from Carriacou. The storm also destroyed the home of his late grandmother.

In a statement, Stiell said that the climate crisis is going from bad to worse, and faster than expected.

"Whether in my homeland of Carriacou ... hammered by Hurricane Beryl, or in the heatwaves and floods crippling communities in some of the world's largest economies, it's clear that the climate crisis is pushing disasters to record-breaking new levels of destruction," he said.

Hurricane Beryl causes damage in Barbados

Grenada officials had to evacuate patients to a lower floor after hospital roof was damaged, Mitchell said.

"There is the likelihood of even greater damage," he told reporters. "We have no choice but to continue to pray."

In Barbados, Wilfred Abrahams, minister of home affairs and information, said drones — which are faster than crews fanning across the island — would assess damage once Beryl passes.

Forecasters had warned of a life-threatening storm surge of up to 9 feet in areas where Beryl made landfall, with 3 to 6 inches of rain for Barbados and nearby islands and possibly 10 inches in some areas, especially in Grenada and the Grenadines.

Beryl strengthened from a tropical depression to a major hurricane in just 42 hours — a feat accomplished only six other times in Atlantic hurricane history, and with Sept. 1 as the earliest previous date, according to hurricane expert Sam Lillo.

Hurricane Beryl makes landfall in Trinidad and Tobago

It also was the earliest Category 4 Atlantic hurricane on record, besting Hurricane Dennis, which became a Category 4 storm on July 8, 2005 — and then set another record as the earliest to reach Category 5.

Beryl amassed its strength from record warm waters that are hotter now than they would be at the peak of hurricane season in September, said hurricane specialist and storm surge expert Michael Lowry.

Even as Beryl bore down on the southeast Caribbean, government officials warned about a separate cluster of thunderstorms mimicking the hurricane's path that have a 70% chance of becoming a tropical depression.

"There's always a concern when you have back-to-back storms," Lowry said. "If two storms move over the same area or nearby, the first storm weakens the infrastructure, so the secondary system doesn't need to be as strong to have serious impacts."

Beryl is the second named storm in the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. Earlier this month, Tropical Storm Alberto made landfall in northeast Mexico and killed four people.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts the 2024 hurricane season is likely to be well above average, with between 17 and 25 named storms. The forecast calls for as many as 13 hurricanes and four major hurricanes.

An average Atlantic hurricane season produces 14 named storms, seven of them hurricanes and three major hurricanes.
