Karnataka’s principal attractions lie at opposite ends of the state, with a handful of less-visited places dotted along the coast between Goa and Kerala .

Road and rail routes dictate that most itineraries take in the state capital, Bengaluru (Bangalore), a go-ahead, modern city that epitomises the aspirations of the country’s new middle class, with glittering malls, fast-food outlets and nightlife unrivalled outside Mumbai .

The state’s second city, Mysuru (Mysore), appeals more for its Raj-era ambience, nineteenth-century palaces and vibrant produce and incense markets. It also lies within easy reach of several important historical monuments, notably the ruined Vijayanagar city at Hampi, whose lost temples and derelict palaces stand amid an arid, rocky landscape of surreal beauty.

Fed by the southwest monsoon and draped in dense deciduous forests, the Western Ghats, run in an unbroken line along the state’s palm-fringed coast, impeding the path of the rain clouds east.

As a result, the landscape of the interior – comprising the southern apex of the triangular Deccan trap, known as the Mysore Plateau, is considerably drier. Three of south India’s most sacred rivers, the Kaveri (also spelt Cauvery), Tungabhadra and Krishna, flow across this sun-baked terrain, draining east to the Bay of Bengal.

#1 Explore Bengaluru (Bangalore)

This booming silicon city offers the best shopping, nightlife and dining this side of Mumbai, not to mention a few great parks, plus the odd palace and temple.

Don’t miss Cubbon Park, a welcome green space in the heart of the city, shaded by massive clumps of bamboo, and presided over by a statue of Queen Victoria.

Several prominent historic landmarks are located within its sprawling expanse, including the State Central Library, one of the oldest and largest in the country, housed in the impressive red Sheshadri Iyer Memorial Hall, and the colonnaded, red-brick High Court of Karnataka (Attara Kacheri).

Inspired by the splendid gardens of the Mughals and the French botanical gardens at Puducherry in Tamil Nadu, the Lalbagh Botanical Gardens designed by Sultan Haider Ali set in 1760 laying are also worth visiting.

#2 Seek out Mysuru (Mysore) the state’s second city

The sandalwood city oozes old-world charm and has lots to see, including the opulent Mysore Palace. A centre of sandalwood-carving, silk and incense production, and dotted with palaces and gardens, Mysore, officially renamed Mysuru in 2014, is one of south India’s more appealing cities and its cultural capital. It remains an old-fashioned place, changed by neither an IT boom nor its well-established status as a top international yoga destination.

That said, the erstwhile capital of the Wadiyar rajas can be underwhelming at first blush: upon stumbling off a bus or train you are smacked by a cacophony of tooting, careening buses, bullock carts, bikes and tongas. Still, give it a few days and Mysuru will cast a spell on you.

Stroll past the evocative, if dilapidated, pre-Independence buildings lining market areas such as Ashoka Road and Sayaji Rao Road lend an air of faded grandeur to the vibrant city centre.

#3 Seek out two of Halebidu’s Hoysala Temples

Halebidu (formerly Halebid), 32 km northwest of Hassan, was the second capital of the powerful Hoysala dynasty, which held sway over south Karnataka from the eleventh until the early fourteenth centuries and its peak stretched from coast to coast. Once known as Dora Samudra (Gateway to the Sea), the capital city became Hale-bidu, or “Old City”, after successive raids by the Delhi sultanate between 1311 and 1326 reduced it to rubble.

Despite the sacking, several large Hoysala temples survive, two of which, the Hoysaleshvara and Kedareshvara, are superb, covered in exquisite carvings and are worth exploring.

#4 Walk under the gigantic gopura at Chennakeshava temple

Located northwest of Hassan, on the banks of the Yagachi River, Belur was the Hoysala capital during the eleventh and twelfth centuries, its importance marked by the gateway tower at Chennakeshava temple.

Still in active worship, the Chennakeshava temple is a fine and early example of the singular Hoysala style, built by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 to celebrate his conversion from Jainism, victory over Chola forces at Talakad and his independence from the Chalukyas.

Today, its grey-stone gopura, or gateway tower, soars above a small, bustling market town – a popular pilgrimage site from October to December, when busloads of Ayappan devotees stream through en route to Sabarimala. The Car Festival held around March or April takes place over twelve days and has a pastoral feel, attracting farmers from the surrounding countryside who conduct a bullock cart procession through the streets to the temple.

#5 Ditch Goa for Gokarna

This vibrant Hindu holy town is blessed with atmospheric temples and exquisite crescent beaches and is ideal for serious unwinding. Among India’s most scenically situated sacred sites, Gokarna lies between a broad white-sand beach and the verdant foothills of the Western Ghats.

Yet this compact little coastal town – a Shaivite centre for more than two millennia – remained largely “undiscovered” by Western tourists until the early 1990s, when it began to attract neo-hippies fleeing the commercialization of Goa, just over 60 km north.

Now firmly on the tourist map, the town retains a charming local character, as the Hindu pilgrims pouring through still far outnumber the foreigners who flock here in winter. A hotchpotch of wood-fronted houses and red terracotta roofs, Gokarna is clustered around a long L-shaped bazaar. Its broad main road – known as Car Street – runs west to the beach, which is a sacred site in its own right.

#6 Find serenity in ruins at Hampi

Among a surreal landscape of golden-brown boulders and leafy banana fields are the crumbling remains of the Vijayanagar kingdom. The “City of Victory,” Vijayanagar, better known as Hampi (the name of the main local village), spills from the south bank of the River Tungabhadra.

This once dazzling Hindu capital was devastated by a six-month Muslim siege in the sixteenth century. Only stone, brick and stucco structures survived the ensuing sack – monolithic deities, crumbling houses and abandoned temples dominated by towering gopuras – as well as the irrigation system that channelled water to the temples.

The serene riverside setting and air of magic that still lingers over the site, sacred for centuries before a city was founded here, make it one of India’s most extraordinary locations. Many find it difficult to leave and spend weeks chilling out in cafés, wandering to whitewashed hilltop temples and gazing at the spectacular sunsets.

#7 Size up the splendid dome at Vijayapura (Bijapur)

Known as the “Agra of the South” for its splendid Islamic architecture, most famously the vast dome of the Gol Gumbaz. The dry and dusty far northern region of Karnataka is as distinct culturally as it is in landscape. Predominantly Muslim, at least in the larger settlements, it boasts some wonderful Islamic architecture and shrines in the venerable city of Vijayapura (Bijapur), bustling Kalaburagi (Gulbarga) and rather forlorn Bidar.

#8 Escape the tourists, make a beeline for Bidar

This rarely visited Muslim outpost in the remote northeast of the state is famed for its bidri metalwork and magnificent mediaeval monuments. Lost in the far northeast of Karnataka, Bidar is a provincial backwater known for its fighter-pilot training base, but visitors will discover its gently decaying monuments, its robust fifteenth-century fort and the most important Sikh shrine in Karnataka, Guru Nanak Jhira Sahib.

The town, half of whose 210,000-strong population is Muslim, has a gritty charm, with narrow red-dirt streets ending at arched gates and open vistas across the plains. Littered with tile-fronted tombs, rambling fortifications and old mosques, it merits a visit if you’re travelling between Hyderabad (150 km east) and Vijayapura, although you should expect little in the way of Western comforts, and lots of curious approaches from locals.

From the bustling tech hub of Bengaluru to the tranquil hills of Coorg and the ancient ruins of Hampi, Karnataka provides an enchanting selection of places to stay that cater to every traveller's preferences.

Mysuru (Mysore)

Staying near the city centre allows easy access to attractions like the palace, Chamundi Hills, and the vibrant Devaraja Market. Finding a room is only a problem during Dasara and the Christmas/New Year period, when the popular places are booked up weeks in advance and prices predictably soar. Checkout is generally at noon.

Kodagu (Coorg)

Kodagu has a huge range of stay options from rustic cottages to ritzy resorts, though its charm lies in the profusion of traditional homestays, many in plantation bungalows, which offer the legendary hospitality of the Kodavas.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is famous for its ancient ruins and historical significance. It's best to stay in the Hampi Bazaar area or nearby Hospet town, which has a range of accommodation options .

Located on the coastal belt of Karnataka, Mangalore offers beautiful beaches and a rich cultural blend. Staying in areas like Panambur, Kadri, or the city centre provides access to beaches, temples, and local cuisine.

Known for its pristine beaches and religious significance, Gokarna is a tranquil coastal town. Om Beach, Kudle Beach, and Gokarna Main Beach are popular areas for accommodation .

Karnataka has numerous transportation options available, so whether you’re navigating the bustling city streets of Bengaluru or embarking on scenic drives through picturesque landscapes, the state’s well-connected network of roads, railways, and airways help you to get around.

Karnataka has an extensive rail network connecting major cities and towns. It's advisable to book train tickets in advance, especially for long-distance journeys, to secure your preferred class and seat. Hubballi is the state's major railway junction.

Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operates a vast network of buses connecting various cities, towns, and even remote areas within the state.

KSRTC buses are a reliable and affordable option for intercity travel and reaching popular destinations

If in Bengaluru, there is now a metro system. The east– west Purple Line links the main train and bus stations (via City Railway and Majestic stations) with points east including Cubbon Park, MG Road and Indiranagar.

The north–south Green Line travels south via Yeshwantpur before intersecting with the Purple Line at Majestic and continuing south via Chikpete, KR Market and Lalbagh. Payment is by single-use tokens or Varshik smart cards, which give a slight discount.

By auto-rickshaw

The easiest way of getting around big cities is by metered auto-rickshaw. Most meters do work and drivers are usually willing to use them, although you will occasionally be asked for a flat fare, especially during rush hour.

You can book chauffeur-driven cars and taxis through several state-wide agencies or use Ola or Uber.

To truly experience Karnataka, you will need a minimum of 7 to 10 days. This will give you time to visit popular destinations in like Bangalore, where you can spend two days immersed in the city's bustling atmosphere and visit iconic landmarks such as Bangalore Palace, Lalbagh Botanical Garden, and Tipu Sultan's Summer Palace.

Then head to Mysore for two days. Marvel at the grandeur of Mysore Palace, take a trip to the serene Chamundi Hills, and explore After that, make your way to Coorg, a picturesque hill station renowned for its coffee plantations or venture into Nagarhole National Park for a brush with wildlife.

Coastal Karnataka is one of the wettest regions in India, its climate is dominated by the seasonal monsoon, which sweeps in from the southwest in June, dumping an average of 4m of rain on the coast before it peters out in late September.

October to April is therefore the best time to visit. Bengaluru and Mysuru, to the south of the Deccan Plateau, have a temperate climate with mild weather most of the year. The northern tracts and the coast get really hot in summer (April–June), with monsoon bringing some respite between July and October.

Karnataka also has several large festivals including:

• Hampi Utsav (early Nov). Celebrated since Vijayanagar times and revived by the Government of Karnataka, this three-day festival is a cultural showcase of music, dance, costume dramas, puppet shows, fireworks, processions and kushti (wrestling) that once received royal patronage.
• Makar Sankranti (mid-Jan). The transition of the sun into the zodiac sign of Makara (Capricorn) is when the harvest festival (suggi habba) is celebrated. Temple festivities, cultural programmes and kite-flying, especially in northern Karnataka, mark the occasion.
• Bangalore Karaga (April). Bengaluru’s oldest festival is celebrated over eleven days around the Dharmaraya Swamy Temple in the old city. The festival honours Draupadi, considered a form of Shakti, and is named after the karaga or large floral pyramid borne by the appointed carrier during a night-time procession to the accompaniment of music and acrobatics.
• Mysore Dasara (Sept/Oct). The biggest of them all, Karnataka’s naada habba (state festival) culminates in a grand procession on its tenth and final day.
• Kadalekai Parishe (Dec/Jan). Bengaluru’s unique groundnut fair, held near the Bull Temple in Basavanagudi with rural produce on sale.

• Devarayandurga Reserve forest Bordering the Tumkur Ditrict, famous for the Narasimha Temple, this forest is home to the leopards, along with other wildlife and birds. No permission provided for staying in the forest, however sightings possible en route to the Temples depending on luck

• Gokarna Though famous for the Pilgrim place and Athmalingam Temple, this place is dotted with Beaches far away from the Pilgrim site. Om Beach, Half-moon Beach are most common. Beach treks are a common affair
• Murudeshwar Famous for the Lord Shiva temple, in relation to the Gokarna Temple, the beach is one of the safest beaches for play
• Maravanthe The beach on the national highway, bordered by the river on the other side of the road
• Udupi Malpe Beach, about 7 km from Uudpi, is a famous attraction. St. Mary's Island (Tonsepar), 8 km from the coast, is accessible from ferry from this point. The beach has a walkway
• Mangalore A business town. Tannerubhavi, Panamburu, Surathkal, Ullal and Someshwar Beaches form the major attraction.

Karnataka is the 7th-largest state in India in area and 8th-largest by population. Karnataka is bordered by Maharashtra in the north, Goa in the north west, Tamil Nadu in the south east, Kerala in the south west, Andhra Pradesh in the east and Telangana in the north east.

In the 3rd century BCE, the region we now know as Karnataka came under the Maurya emperors of Magadha. Chandragupta, the founder, is said to have spent his retirement in Shravanabelagola as a Jain ascetic. Jainism, introduced by the Mauryas, survives and flourishes to this day in Karnataka, and has given it some of its finest and oldest attractions including the Gomateswara statues that stand tall in their majestic nakedness in multiple places in the state. The Mauryas were followed by the Satavahanas who ruled from Pratishtana in Maharashtra and Amaravathi in present day Andhra Pradesh. Their reign lasted over 400 years, ending in the 3rd century CE They in turn were followed by the Kadambas of Banavasi , and the Western Ganga dynasty that ruled the region that is now Mysore . They are considered the first Kannada rulers. During the time of the Kadambas, the first works in Kannada were written by Adikavi (or first poet) Pampa, who wrote that even torture by an elephant bullhook would not make him forget the beauty of his beloved Banavasi.

The Chalukyas, the Rashtrakutas and the Hoysalas were the other major dynasties who ruled major parts of Karnataka from the 7th to 12th centuries. They are responsible for many of the temples that survive to this day and are considered architectural marvels, These include Pattadakal, Belur and Halebeedu.

The Cholas seem to have had a hold on the Southern Part of Karnataka, with various Dravidian Architecture Temples adorning the regions of Bangalore and Kolar.

Hoysala Dynasty ruled over the Mysore region and have developed structures, majorly a star shaped design occupying their designs in various Temples. The Period around 9th to 11th century seem to have been in the hands of the hoysalas, especially the Mysore region.

The Vijayanagara Empire ruled over much of what's now Karnataka and the larger Deccan Plateau from the mid-13th to the mid-16th century. The ruins of Hampi provide a glimpse into the splendor of the Vijayanagara Empire.

The Kingdom of Mysore in the early 14th century was centered around their capital city of Mysore which was then a small town ruled by the Wodeyar Dyanasty. The kingdom remained small till the 16th Century.

The Bijapur Sultanate rose into prominence after defeating the Vijayanagara Empire in 1565. Bijapur was the capital of the Adilshah Dynasty which ruled the region. Bijapur is a historic place with lots of archaeological sites — most notably Gol Gumbaz, the largest dome in Asia.

After the defeat of the Bijapur Sultanate by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in the mid 16th Century the Wodeyar Dynasty expanded the Mysore Kingdom by leasing land from Aurangzeb. This enabled the kingdom to remain prominent.

In 1857 the British took over what is now India , Pakistan and Bangladesh and this period of rule was known as the British Raj .

The Wodeyars continued their rule as an independent kingdom under the British Raj by paying tribute till India's independence in 1947. After India's independence the Kingdom of Mysore became an Indian state. The city of Mysore has so many surviving palaces that it is known today as the "City of Palaces".

The Wodeyars' immense contribution in various fields - education, arts, governance, industry and infrastructure - laid the foundation for the rise of Karnataka after India's independence.

Flora and fauna

Karnataka is known for its wealth of flora and fauna. Around 25% of India's elephants and 10% of its tigers are in Karnataka. Many regions in Karnataka are as yet unexplored, leading to new discoveries of flora and fauna. The Western Ghats teem with wildlife and are an acknowledged bio diversity hotspot .

Kannada is the official language and is spoken by virtually all of the state's inhabitants. Dialects of the language spoken in each of the regions differ from each other. Regional dialects in the state are influenced by the languages of neighbouring states, and sometimes a person from the southern region may find it difficult to understand the Kannada spoken in the northern region.

Like with the rest of South India, Hindi is not widely spoken nor understood, save for a few urban areas. People will respond more readily to English than Hindi.

In the districts along the borders of neighbouring states, people do speak multiple languages and many of them can speak the language of their neighbours across the border. In the Northern Karnataka region, many people can understand Hindi/Urdu in the districts of Bidar , Gulbarga and Yadgir and Telugu in Raichur and Bellary districts, while in the Belgaum and Bijapur districts bordering Maharastra in the Northwestern Karnataka region, people can speak Marathi.

Kempegowda International Airport ( BLR  IATA ) in Bangalore Rural is the 3rd-busiest airport in India, connecting with major state capitals and cities as well as 20 international destinations.

Mangalore International Airport serves primarily the Gulf region, and domestically, the four metro cities– Delhi , Kolkata , Chennai and Mumbai and the state capital of Bangalore .

Thanks to its long and varied history Karnataka has an interesting mix of religious sites, remnants of historical empires, UNESCO World Heritage Sites , national parks, bird sanctuaries, wildlife sanctuaries, palaces, forts, beaches, hill stations, caves and waterfalls.

Religious sites

Owing to the multi-religious influence in Karnataka through its history, there are a vast number of religious sites in Karnataka, some even dating from antiquity. Belur and Hale Belur are home to ancient Hindu temples. Kudalasangama is a pilgrimage center for people of the Lingayat faith and is at the confluence of the Krishna and the Malaprabha rivers. Murudeshwara has a beautiful Shiva statue situated on the tallest place on the Arabian Sea coast, with a colorful panorama. Shravanabelagola is a Jain Pilgrimage centre and home to the biggest monolithic (single stone) statue of Babhubali in Karnataka. The statue is visible from a distance of 30 km. Udupi Krishna matha and Kollur Mookambika Temple are also very ancient Hindu temple in Karavali region.

One of the oldest mosques of Karnataka is in the Kalaburagi Fort, built in 1367 by the Bahmani King Muhammad Shah I. It is the biggest mosque in Karnataka, and when compared in plan and design, the mosque resembles the mosque at Cardova in Spain . The Jamiya mosque in Bijapur is another huge monument built by Adilshah in 16th century. It has a proportionate dome and its mihrab is gorgeously painted. The Malika Jahan mosque in black stone is another notable mosque in Bijapur. Bidar has the famous Solha-kamb mosque with 16 cylindrical pillars built in the year 1423. The Andu masjid of Bijapur, Mahal masjid of Afzalpur in Kalaburgi district and the Khali masjid of Åland in Bidar district built during Adilshahi period are some beautiful examples of Islamic architecture in Karnataka. The Mausoleum of Ahmed Shah Wali, at Ashtur near Bidar is a tall structure with paintings in it. This prince is venerated as a saint by both the Hindus and Muslims. Vijayapura has two princely Mausoleums, Ibrahim Rauza, a twin structure is standing on an arched platform. The Gol Gumbaz is another famous mausoleum of Mohammed Adil Shah.

The Government Museum built in the year 1880 in Bangalore has a collection of ancient arms, a sculpture gallery and a collection of old coins. There are exclusive painting collections of noted artists like K. Venkatappa and K.K. Hebbar. Jaganmohan Art Gallery housed in an old palace of Mysore has fine art works (including some by Raja Ravi Varma) in colours, metals, ivory and wood but a huge collection of musical instruments too of yore. The Mysore Palace has a large collection of art works from various countries, besides a gallery of armory.

At the district museum in Shimoga in an old palace, queer items of Keladi rulers are preserved. The Kalaburagi Museum has the items of Bahmanshahi times and huge collection of Buddhist sculptures (Decorative plaques) from Sannati . Museum in Chitradurga has many antiquities connected with the local chieftains, hero-stones, weapons and other items. There are Karnataka State Government Museums at Kittur, Hassan , Keladi, Raichur , Basavakalyana , Huvina Hadagali, Dharwad , Gadag and Srirangapatna .

Waterfalls are one of the major tourist attractions in Karnataka, many of which are primarily located in Malenadu , Cauvery Basin and Karavali regions. Best time to visit these waterfalls would be during rainy season months of June, July, August or post-rainy seasons between September to October months. Jog falls near Sagara in Shimoga district is one of the highest waterfalls in India and Abbey Falls, Achakanya falls, Balmuri falls, Chunchanakatte falls, Gokak falls are some of the other well known falls among the many waterfalls of Karnataka.

The Brindavan Gardens offer ornamental gardens adjoining the Krishnarajasagara Dam (also known as KRS dam) located in Mandya District near the city of Mysore . In Bangalore Urban District, look for Cubbon Park and Lalbagh Botanical Garden. Tungabhadra dam near Hosapete has also beautiful garden.

Scuba diving

Pigeon Island (Netrani Island) lies about 12 nautical miles (22 km) off the coast of Murudeshwar in Karnataka. It is a 4-hour drive from Goa , or can be reached by Konkan Railway, with Murudeshwar and Bhatkal being the nearest stations. The Dreamz Diving is the only local dives centers here. Please check in advance with them as quite a few times due to Navy training the place is closed for scuba diving.

The visibility here is generally in the 15-20m range and the dive sites are 10-30 m. Marine life is spectacular, with huge schools of jacks, barracuda, triggerfish and fusiliers. Many times giant groupers, black tip sharks, kobias and giant tunas are spotted here, as are whales, whale sharks, orcas, dolphins, have been spotted by many divers at Netrani Island.

Netrani is considered to be the best dive location from main land India which is accessible within a day's trip to Murudeshwar.

Karnataka is known for a wide variety of local fast foods which are available at outlets everywhere. Some are standalone outlets while others are well known names with branch locations. The outlets are self-service where you stand and eat, although some of the newer ones provide sit-down table service for a higher charge. The outlets are open throughout the day and popular during breakfast and lunch. Some outlets specialize, while others have more variety as indicated in their menus.Udupi cuisine (vegetarian) is known worldwide through Udupi hotels and restaurants.

These are a few specialty dishes you can feast on in Karnataka:

• Bisibele Baath - As the name suggests, it is served hot. It's made of rice and lentils and a lot of spices.
• Chutney - A favourite accompaniment eaten with dosa, idli, vada, chutney can be prepared from virtually anything including vegetables (tomato), fruit (mango), nuts (groundnuts) or chopped coconut. Chutney is prepared fresh every day for optimal taste and can be stored for few days.
• Dharwad Peda - A sweet delicacy created in the city of Dharwad . Made from milk, thickened milk and sugar. Also available at Nandini branded milk booths of the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) a milk co-operative in Karnataka.
• Dosa - A thin dough fried until crisp, usually served as One Serving. To eat, the pieces are broken off and dipped in the amazing chutney and sambar served in bowls accompanying the dish. Numerous varieties of dosa are found across Karnataka like 'masala dosa', 'set-dosa' (soft spongy fluffy dosa served as a pack of 3 or 4 with vegetable curry, kurma or sambar and tomato-onion chutney), 'benne-dosa (a dash of butter added to standard dosa preparation for distinctive flavor and aroma), rava-dosa (rava - sooji or semolina), etc. Neer or Bajjare dosa is a delicacy unique to coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi .
• Idli - Idli, also romanised "idly", is made by steaming batter, that is traditionally made from black lentils and rice into patties using a two to three inch diameter mold. Traditionally a breakfast dish since it is light yet wholesome. The shape and size of the "idli" moulds varies across Karnataka. Always accompanied by steaming hot sambar and fresh chutney that vary in preparation region wise. Variations include 'Tatte idli' (tatte - plate in Kannada), 'rava (sooji or semolina) idli' are a popular specialty in some outlets.
• Jolada Roti - A thin tortilla made of jowar (aka jawar, similar to corn / millet / maize) baked on both sides for 2-3 minutes. Jowar is specially grown in the northern part of Karnataka which is the 2nd most arid region of India. Served with brinjal curry (various types of preparations) and chutney (peanuts and garlic variant). A staple diet in Northern Karnataka and the border areas with Maharashtra.
• Kesari Bhath - Originally a dessert item, this is now popular as breakfast. Made with sooji (semolina), ghee (for taste), water and milk. Garnished with cashew nuts and dried fruits for added taste. In some parts of Karnataka it is known as Shira .
• Mysore Pak - A sweet delicacy created in the Royal Kitchen of Mysore under the Wodeyars. Made with gram (chana) flour, ghee and sugar. Available across Karnataka.
• Raagi and Akki Rotis - Similar to tortillas but made of raagi (English: coracan, finger millet) or rice flour and black cumin, asafoetida, fresh coriander, green chillies and finely chopped onions.
• Raagi Mudde – A staple food in the interior since preparation is simple. Basically cook raagi flour in water and roll into thick-consistency balls. Raagi mudde is swallowed and not chewed after dipping it in ghee and sambar.
• Upma - prepared as a thick porridge from soji (semolina) with cut vegetables and seasonings. Served hot and a popular breakfast item.
• Uttapam - a dosa like dish with toppings cooked into the batter during frying. This is thick, unlike Dosas which are crisp.
• Vada - A fried savory doughnut. This is consumed along with idli and known as idli-vada .Vada are very popular item at breakfast time since it is light yet wholesome. Vadas are available on Indian Railways and most transport hubs all day. Although deep fried in boiling oil, this is not oily when fried correctly. Served with steaming hot sambar and chutney.
• Badam milk - crushed almond powder mixed with milk and is served hot or cold as preferred.
• Filter coffee - unique varieties of preparation, famous across Karnataka. Without chicory.
• Tea - grown in the various tea gardens in the mountainous Western Ghats in Karnataka and elsewhere in India provide great variations in taste.
• Tender coconut - naturally sterile and available everywhere. The best thirst quencher during the hot Indian summer. An all natural health drink due to its high mineral content.

Karnataka provides a wide variety of accommodation to suit the budget of every kind of traveller. The international chains like Hyatt are not limited to the state capital of Bangalore , but are also present at the smaller cities like Hampi as well with a similar experience as checking into London or Paris or for that matter New York City . The Karnataka-Govt owned Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation (KSTDC) also runs in-house branded hotels which range from Budget to Luxury at many of the tourist destinations located around the state.

Budget hotels also called lodges are found near the transport hubs (railway stations and bus stands) as well as the central areas of most cities and towns. Meals are had at the nearby local fast food joint .

Medium range hotels comprise national and notable foreign chains with a range of options to suit the budget. Buffet breakfast is provided as part of the room charges or chargeable separately. In Bangalore for the Upper Medium Range hotels a continental breakfast (chicken variant is provided instead of pork - chicken sausage, chicken ham, chicken salami) and is provided alongside the typical South Indian breakfast of idli , vada , dosa , upma , etc. as well as the local specialty items termed Today's Special . Some properties provide only South Indian buffet breakfast. Day 1 & 2 – arrival and sightseeing in bangalore.

Bangalore is the largest and capital city of Karnataka. Well-connected by flights and trains from most cities of India, Bangalore boasts of an amalgamation of palaces, national parks, museums and pubs to kick start your Karnataka Vacation.

Try reaching Bangalore the night before or early in the morning so that you can make the most of your day. Head straight to the Bangalore Palace and let your eyes soak in the multiple hues of this European-style architecture. With intricate carvings and splendid decor, the palace will give you a glimpse into the past of this busy, urban technological hub.

Visit the Iskcon temple in Rajajinagar next and the Tipu Sultan Summer Palace thereafter. Both of these architectural marvels adorn the skyline of the city and draw many tourists to their doorsteps.

Your next stop should be Lalbagh Botanical Garden to see its lush and luxurious gardens.

The highlight of your day will be the Banerghatta National Park, but don’t forget to take a small detour to the Bull Temple on your way. The animal safari at Banerghatta will be a memorable experience as you wander in a caged vehicle through the carefully constructed sanctuary and see tiger, lions, elephants, bears and other species in their almost-natural habitat. Take some time to go to the butterfly museum next door.

Drive down from Banerghatta to the Pyramid Valley in Kanakapura on the outskirts of the city. Catch the sunset here- the view is breathtaking! It is a meditation centre built amidst a sprawling landscape and will end your trip to Bangalore on a calming note. The centre closes at 6 p.m., so check if you have enough time on your hand.

Spend the last part of your evening shopping in the M.G. Road- Commercial Street area or chilling in one of the pubs in Koramangala or Indiranagar before resting for the night. Also, try to visit the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath and the Big Banyan Tree in Uttarahalli, Hobli.

In case you miss out on any of these on Day 1, you could always visit them on the day you depart from Bangalore.

Day 3 ,4 & 5 – Mysore, Kushalnagar, Coorg

Mysuru is a 3-hour drive away from Bangalore. Outstation cabs, buses as well as trains are available. It’s advised to leave early to make the most of your second day of Karnataka tour. Your first stop must be the Mysore Palace, which is the former abode of the Royal family of the Wadiyars and is an exquisite blend of Indian, Islamic and European architectural traditions. The beauty of the palace gardens and the elegance and splendour of the palace itself will leave you quite dumbfounded.

The Tipu Sultan fort and Ranganathaswamy Temple in the town of Srirangapatna are outside the city borders but the drive is worth it. The Somanathapura Temple, St. Philomena’s Church, Lalitha Mahal Palace, and Karanji Lake are a few of the suggested spots to visit.

Day 10 – Drive to Bangalore, break journey at Shivmogga

If you are driving, you need to head back to Bangalore for sure. But, if you are open to flying back after the trip concludes, you can consider exiting from Dabolim Airport, Goa after Gokarna. It’s just 140 KMs away from Gokarna.

Mangalore – Coastal Karnataka Itinerary

• Proceed for local sightseeing after breakfast
• Start the day by visiting the famous Kadri Manjunath temple which is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and has a history dating back to the 10th and 11th centuries
• Next, visit another famous temple of Mangalore, the Kudroli Gokarnatheswara temple, known for its famous Dussehra celebrations

• Have a nice dinner either at Malpe Beach at the Fisherman’s Cove or at any other restaurant based on your preferences
• Night halt in Udupi

Today you will explore some of the beautiful beach places in Karnataka including the exotic St. Mary’s Island. The island is a picturesque island known for its columnar basalt rocks.

• In the morning you head back to Malpe Beach to take the ferry to the beautiful St. Mary’s Island
• Breakfast is at St. Mary’s Island, and you can spend about an hour on the island
• Head back to your hotel and after lunch check out and leave for Baindur which is about 70 kilometres from Udupi

• Early morning you can take a walk to view a spectacular sunrise from the top of a hillock in Baindur followed by watching the early morning activity on the Baindur beach, also known as Ottinene Beach or Byndoor beach
• You can opt for an exciting ride on an airboat in the backwaters

• After lunch checkout and leave for the next destination which is Murdeshwar at a distance of about 32 kilometres
• Visit the famous Murudeshwar temple and spend time on the beach, indulge in water sports
• Night halt at Murdeshwar

Kasarkod Blue Flag Beach – Day 5

• After breakfast checkout and leave for the next destination which is the Kasarkod Blue Flag Beach at a distance of about 24 kilometres
