How Does an RV Thermostat Work?

Most RV thermostats use the phenomenon of thermal expansion to help control the setting of your air conditioner. Thermostats usually use bimetallic strips or gas-filled bellows.

Because iron does not expand as much as brass, the bimetal sensor will curve outward when the temperature gets higher. Sign #1 – The thermostat has no power/unresponsive

Can a House Thermostat Be Used in an RV?

Air Conditioning units (AC) on RV’s can be a great asset for those that spend a lot of time in them. But, on some occasions, some sort of deterioration or leakage can occur.

However, these may not be a very difficult situations to fix and it is possible for one to do it at home, provided that the right tools are used.

Troubleshooting a not working AC may not be difficult if you have basic knowledge about AC’s. Most RV’s are equipped with AC’s from atwood, coleman, dometic or advent. When you detect that something is wrong with the Air Conditioning unit of your RV, the first thing to do is to see exactly what the problem is, in order to properly fix it. Now, it is important for you to keep in mind how old and how often your AC is used, as that can also influence the problem.

AC units are complex enough and may not always be fixed by RV owners. RV AC professional becomes a must then. But, sometimes its better to understand the problem and see if you can get it fixed yourslef.

1. The AC Does Not Turn “O N”

When you have an Air Conditioner in your RV, usually you want it to work, and so, it can be quite frustrating when it doesn’t. The first step towards fixing it is to check for battery in the remote. Although AA and AAA batteries are known to last for a very long period of time, cheaper brands can wear out sooner than expected.

Generally, changing batteries should be sufficient, but if it is not, then the next step is to check whether there is anything broken in the remote. If your remote seems to be in good condition, then a simple, yet overlooked step is to check whether the electricity in the RV or motorhome is on.

2. The Air Conditioner Blows Out Hot Air

If your AC is blowing out hot air, then the first step is to check the thermostat. If however, you set the temperature right and the AC keeps blowing out hot air, then it is possible that the problem itself is in the thermostat.

To fix this, you will need to disconnect the wires leading to the thermostat and then attach them together, bypassing the thermostat entirely. If the AC starts working properly, then it is definitely a broken thermostat, to which you will need to buy a new one.

 3. The Air Conditioning Unit Motor is Unusually Loud

AC units are usually very smooth and silent and so, it is easy to notice when it starts acting up and making a lot of noise. This noise is very likely caused by the fact that the rubber shock absorbers are not in their rightful place.

Leaking is a common problem when it comes to Air Conditioners in Recreational Vehicles. Checkout my previous post on how to fix leaking RV air conditioner . Here, it is important for you to check whether it leaks when the AC is on or when it rains, and maybe even if it leaks in both situations.

Now, Air Conditioners are sealed to the rooftop of the RV with a rubber gasket. This gasket is usually very low-maintenance and so will require little attention. Nevertheless, if you start noticing that there is a leak, then you definitely should try to fix it as soon as possible, before it becomes a long term problem.

That being said, the first step towards fixing it would be to verify if the rubber gasket is intact. To do this, you will need to check whether there is at least) half an inch of height in the gasket between the Air Conditioner and the RV itself. If the rubber gasket really is the problem, then you will need to replace it with a new one.

Here, you can either hire a qualified RV air conditioning specialist or do it yourself. If you wish to do it yourself, then you will need a few tools:

  • Rubbing alcohol

Once you’ve gathered all the necessary tools, then you can move on to fixing it. We carry this Black and Decker RV toolkit (amazon link) in our rig, it has most basic tools. That’s very helpful in fixing and installing appliances on RV.

First of all, you will need to remove the outer part of your AC, also known as shroud, in order to reveal its inner parts. After this is done, you will have to locate the bolts and remove them, placing them in a bag, so that you’ll find them easily when needed. Then you should carefully remove the shroud and set it aside, where you can easily reach it later.

The next step is to remove the Air Conditioning unit from the roof, as it will be much easier to work with. Remove the screws that hold the AC unit to the rooftop of your RV and set them aside. Then, you will need to observe whether there is an electrical connector and, if there is, what sort of connection there is.

Before cutting the three wires attached, you will need to make sure that the power is disconnected. Once it is disconnected, then you can proceed to cutting the three wires with a pair of cutters. After that, removing the Air Conditioner should be pretty easy, but be careful not to scratch the paint of your RV. Also, be vary of the fact that rv roofs support weight upto certain limit and therefore be careful when climbing up there.

Once the Air Conditioning unit has been removed from the rooftop, you can pull out the old rubber gasket and throw it away. If the rubber gasket is either stuck or hard to remove, use a knife to remove it.

Make sure that you remove all of the remaining residues and clean the entire rooftop with rubbing alcohol.

Moving on to the next step: Placing the new rubber gasket. On this step, you will need to return the AC unit to its rightful place, over the new gasket and reattach it, using the right tools. You will need to reconnect the wiring harness and then reattach the shroud.

Once your work is done, you will need to verify if everything is working properly. To do this, you should use a water hose to lightly spray the AC unit while it is running, and then check if there are any leaks.

Tips For The Future

Air Conditioners are practical and useful devices, but they do need some sort of regular maintenance, in order to function properly. Whether you own a class A motorhome or a fifth wheel or a small pop up camper, air conditioner are very important while camping.

That means that if you don’t wish to buy a brand-new AC unit every few years and don’t want to spend unnecessary money on air conditioning repair specialists, that you will have to dedicate some time to make basic maintenance a part of your routine.

Maintaining your Air Conditioner can be done in four easy steps:

1 . Protect from all elements

First of all, you need to protect your AC unit from all the elements. That means you should cover it when you are not using it. There are many covers out there for the buying and they are very easy to apply to your AC unit. This might seem like an expendable step, but it will protect your AC from dust and dirt.

2. Maintain and service the fan

The second step is to oil your Air Conditioner’s fan. It will run much more smoother if it is properly oiled. Note that every AC is different, and so, you should reach for your manufacturer’s instructions, to ensure that you do it properly.

You should buy a high quality oil that is detergent-free, such as automotive motor oil, as cheap oils might wear out faster and could leave residues that could later on become a problem.

3. Inspect the AC Condenser

Step number three involves inspecting the condenser of your AC unit. This step is important, as its coils will provide you with the cooling you seek in the hot summer days.

It is important to occasionally check the condenser as it can accumulate dirt, dust and other debris (as it is exposed to the elements).

4. Air Out roof vents

This last step is a considerably important one, if you wish to keep excessive moisture away from your RV’s Air Conditioning Unit.

In order to do this, you will have to air out the roof vent. It is quite an easy step and it will help you avoid a lot of unwanted and unnecessary issues.

Your RV Air Conditioner is an important component, but you can’t expect it to last for a lifetime, especially when left uncared for. Many of the issues that can occur in your AC unit can easily be fixed without the aid of professionals, so long as you get informed on how to fix it.

You should establish a schedule to help you know when to do a little cleaning and maintenance. The only thing you should always keep in mind is that all sorts of maintenance should be done while your AC unit is not running.

Every RV has one or more Air Conditioners that helps keep it cool.   They do differ from household A/C units in a few ways, but just like household units, they do require some maintenance.  Below we will take you through the operation, maintenance and some diagnostic tips on a Dometic RV Air Conditioner.

  • Pushing the mode button will bring you into FAN Mode.   Pushing the FAN button will allow you to choose the fan speed for the unit. HI/LOW.
  • If you stay in the FAN mode it will operate just the fan and the A/C unit will circulate Air on HI or LOW, but it will not cool the air.
  • Pressing the MODE button again will bring you to COOL MODE showing you a snowflake in the bottom corner.  Dependent on the previously chosen fan setting will decide if the fan will run all the time on HI or LOW or AUTO.  If Auto was chosen the fan will turn off and on with the operation of the compressor.
  • It is suggested during very hot summer months that the Cool option be operated in HI fan speed only not AUTO.

  • Once the fan operation is decided in COOL mode you may use the up and down arrows to determine what you would like the target temperature to be.
  • The thermostat has foam pads on the back of it that are sensitive and will break down over time if pushed hard.  The thermostat should be pushed as if it is a touch screen, lightly.  No need to mash the buttons.

INTERIOR MAINTENANCE

  • Interior return air filters should be cleaned regularly.   If you have animals, it should be done even more.
  • The screens are there to block any foreign objects from entering and clogging the flow of air for the A/C. If they are not cleaned regularly, it will reduce the efficiency of you unit.
  • Most filters are screens or foam filters. The screens can be cleaned with a damp cloth or a blower on an air compressor.   Foam filters can be cleaned the same way or replaced with like material.
  • The Mixing divider above the ceiling assembly should be checked yearly to ensure no air is being mixed between the return and output sides. This can cause your A/C unit to freeze up and not cool your RV.

EXTERIOR MAINTENANCE

  • Exterior maintenance will require you to climb onto the roof of the RV.  
  • Confirm all power and breakers are off to the A/C unit.

  • Repeat the process as necessary to rid coils of dirt and debris to allow proper airflow through the coils for operation.

  • When in COOL mode, the difference in air temperature the blowing out will be 20 degrees lower than the actual room temperature air that is being sucked into the return vents.
  • This means if it is 100 degrees in the unit when you first turn on the A/C that the air coming out cooling the RV will be 80 degrees.  It will take some time for the RV to begin cooling to the point the room temperature is 80 degrees and the air output is 60 degrees.
  • This could take several hours depending on how high the temperature is in the unit or outside the unit.
  • This should not be confused with the A/C not working properly.
  • If you have determined the air coming out of the vents is not 20 degrees lower than the air temperature in the room, there could be a couple of causes.
  • One cause could be that the coils are frozen.  By removing the return air vents you can examine to see if there is a sheet of ice across the coils.
  • If this situation exists, you should check the divider as suggested in the maintenance suggestion.
  • This can also be caused by the compressor not operating properly for multiple reasons.
  • In the event the coils are frozen you can turn the COOL function off and turn the FAN option to HI and allow the coils to defrost.  This will sometimes result in water dripping from the ceiling assembly.  You should lay a towel down below this to catch the water.
  • Other causes of freezing up could result from the A/C being in an area of an entry point into the unit that is constantly being opened and closed allowing warmer outside air in.  This results in a lot of condensation and can cause the unit to freeze.   Reducing in and out traffic can help with this as well.
  • If you cannot find a remedy to this, you should have one of our facilities check the unit to ensure there are no leaks in the system or other component malfunctions.
  • If we have our thermostat operating either the FAN or COOL option, the fan should be running.
  • In the event it is not you should check the breaker panel inside the RV to ensure there are no tripped breakers.  Also, check the power pole the RV is plugged into to ensure there are no tripped breakers there as well.
  • If this does not resolve the issue it should be brought to a service center for further diagnostic.
  • If the thermostat will not come on to operate the A/C you should check the 12-volt fuses located near the 110-breaker panel inside the RV.   Ensure the fuse is not blown.
  • Also, ensure your 12-volt system is charging and you have a good battery.

When you are having trouble with your Dometic AC control board, the problem may lie with the control board or it may lie with some other part. It can be expensive and confusing to try and fix this issue yourself.

If the control board is bad, then your only repair would be to replace it. But you need to make sure it is the control board that is faulty. It could also be the relay, bad wiring, and other key parts that make up this system.

You may find that any technician you contact will simply tell you to replace the unit. That is if the control board is the problem and has failed in some way.

That seems to be the only repair we have come across for this air conditioning component. One owner created a test box and when he added a thermostat to his system, he says it runs correctly, so the problem may not lie with the control box.

Replacing this part is not going to be difficult. You just need to find the right outlet or marketplace that sells the one that is compatible with your Dometic AC model.

What we also know is that there are none to a minute amount of people who talk about troubleshooting this component. They do as we will talk about other parts that are connected to this device as they may be the source or reason why your AC unit is not working.

The replacement cost is going to be at $100 or well over $100 depending on the unit you need. You can contact Dometic to see what they say and they may have a replacement part they can send you. Talk to your service department and see what they tell you.

Dometic AC Control Board Location

The location may be different from what we report here. That is due to the design of the different models of Dometic AC units. In the case of the 5-button AC unit, the control board is located on the front right of the unit.

It should be right behind the wiring diagram that is placed on the access door. Once you open up that door, you will see a capacitor and some wires blocking your way to the control board.

From there you can do your testing and removal if the controller is bad. Since the control board is inside the AC unit, you may have to get up on a ladder to access it.

That access may depend on where your access doors are. You may have to go on the roof to do this work or pull the AC unit down and work on level ground.

How To Test a Dometic AC Control Board

One instruction was to NOT use the voltmeter to make any tests. The reasoning behind this instruction is that this device does not provide you with an accurate reading.

Instead, you need to unplug the 6-pin connector, or whatever size connector you may have, and then get a 115-volt incandescent bulb to do your test. Here are the instructions for this test:

“ Using a 115-volt incandescent bulb, check from terminal 5 (white-common) to the other terminals to determine if a particular circuit is completed through the board. If the circuit is completed, the light will illuminate.

- Terminal 1 is a blue wire and is the compressor circuit.

- Terminal 2 is a black wire and is a High Fan circuit.

- Terminal 3 is a yellow wire and is a Medium Fan circuit.

- Terminal 4 is a red wire and is a Low Fan circuit.

- Terminal 5 is a white wire and is Common 115 V.

- Terminal 6 is a green/yellow wire and is casing ground.” ( source )

After doing these tests and the AC unit is not working, then you have a different source for your problem.

If this wiring diagram is not matching what you see in your current RV’s air conditioning unit, then we would advise you to contact Dometic to see if they will send you one.

Different air conditioners will have different wiring diagrams. Check your manual as well to see if there is one on its pages. It may not be in the owner’s manual but it could be in a service manual that some companies provide.

Or contact your local Dometic dealer to see what they have available. It is not easy to match up every air conditioner Dometic has made over the years with just one diagram.

According to the information we have come across, it is not hard to either replace the control board or find a new one. But first, how to replace one of these units so you can get your AC unit working again.

1. Replacing the control box

The first step is to shut off the power to your air conditioner. The second step would be to disconnect the wires. Make sure to mark each wire so you know where they go when you are ready to connect them.

The third step would be to disconnect the current control box and pull it out of its position. While you are doing this, you may need to remove the anti-freezing sensor so you can get the control box out without damaging anything.

After you have done all of that, take your replacement unit and put it in the old control box’s place. The fifth step would be to hook the anti-freezing sensor back up and put it in place as well as connect all the wires.

Re-connecting your wires will take the most time. You can take photos of the wires before you disconnect them, etc., and use those photos to guide your work. Some people suggest using end-to-end wire nuts to make your connections but that is up to you

You should use electrical tape as a back up and to make sure there are no opportunities for the wire to cross and create a short.

2. Where to find a control box

When you start looking for a replacement, make sure you have the model and serial numbers of both the control box and the AC unit. This will make it easier to find the right replacement.

We checked Dometic’s website and it does have a list of air conditioner parts and accessories on its web pages. However, there is a little note underneath the description stating it is not available online.

The website has a cart and checkout system but it seems that it is limited use or access to checkout. But that is okay, as you can find these parts at RV Parts Nation but you can expect to pay just under $200 for one model.

Amazon has several models available and the price range is from roughly $75 to well over $100. There are many other locations where you can pick this part up. The prices they charge will vary but they may be close to you so you do not lose any time fixing your AC unit.

Dometic Air Conditioner Control Panel Manual

The first place to go to would be Dometic’s website . They have a link on their support page where you can find the manual that you need. The link says FAQs, product manuals, and brochures.

Next, you can head over to our go-to manual website to view or download a copy for your records. It may take a little searching but you should be able to find what you need on that website. Just be prepared to pay for any downloading you do.

Then you can always do your own search for a more user-friendly website to get a copy of the manual. Another option would be to contact your local Dometic dealer and see if they hand out copies to customers.

Getting a manual should not be a difficult task as Dometic continues to make its air conditioning models. The YouTube video below should also be of some value to you as it shows step-by-step instructions on how to replace your control box.

The Dometic Air Conditioner Not Turning On

Depending on your model of air conditioner, you may find that there is always something going wrong at the worst time possible. When your air conditioner, no matter the model, does not turn on when you need it on, here are some steps to take to locate the problem.

1. Operation- this would be more of a matter of user error than anything else. Different Dometic AC models have different operating instructions and it is easy to make a mistake.

Review those operating instructions for your specific model to make sure you are doing everything right. Keep in mind that the unit won’t turn on if the temperature level is at the set mark on the thermostat.

2 . AC Voltage- the correcting voltage operating range is between 103 and 126.5 volts AC. You need to take the reading at the unit’s power supply leads. You will need to do two tests, one when the AC unit is off and one when it is under load.

If the air conditioner is not operating within that range, you will need to find the problem and repair it.

3. DC Voltage- if your unit has a DC supplied power control then you need to test it to see if it is receiving the proper amount of volts. The range for this option is between 10 to 16 VDC.

If your tests indicate otherwise, then you need to track down the problem and make the necessary repairs.

4. Breaker- this may have tripped for any number of reasons. Make sure to check to see that it has not tripped and that power is getting through to your air conditioner.

You can do that by taking an amp reading at the unit AC voltage supply line. If there is no power getting through, then you know where to look for the problem.

5. Wiring- this may seem like a minor component in comparison to everything else but if you have a bad connection, your AC unit will not operate. Check for corrosion, loose connections, and broken wires, and make sure to check the 6-pin connector to make sure it is tight.

6. Fuse- check for continuity first. The fuse may not look like it blew but it may have. Pull it out and do the test. If there is no continuity then the fuse is bad and needs to be replaced.

Also, you can do a DC voltmeter test to see if there is voltage. Put one lead on the fuse end and the other to the ground to see if there is voltage. If only one side has voltage, then the fuse is bad and needs to be replaced.

7. Thermostat- these can malfunction easily and when they do you should not be seeing your air conditioner operate. Use your meters to test the thermostats to see if they are functioning right.

8. Misc.- other components to check would be the cable array, ambient temperature, and the AC power module board.

Some Additional Words

It is given that electronic components in your RV or trailer will break down. The key is to make sure you have the right tools to diagnose the problem and then replace the failed part or parts.

The drawback to working on this issue yourself is that you may end up replacing more parts than you should and the problem may still continue. Make sure to get expert help when you are not sure what the source of the problem is or what the right fix should be.

Ducted Information

This Ducted 15K Air Conditioner measures 13-11/16" high by 26-3/4" wide by 39-5/16" long for the outside unit and 1-11/16" high by 21-1/8" wide by 21-15/16" long for the inner plenum ceiling assembly unit. It weighs about 80 pounds and can be installed with a recommended two people. In the ceiling assembly, there is a removable screen filter that can be cleaned and replaced. Just make sure that when you do replace it, the screen is dry. Available in both black and white, the unit looks great on any interior or exterior RV design on the market today. Worried about something going wrong? The control screen on the remote or thermostat will show an error code to let you know the problem. Just make sure you keep the manual to interpret this code to fix it. While the external features of this unit are great, the internal features are even better. Why only have cooling when you could have both heating and cooling? The heating and cooling capabilities of this RV AC unit allow you to install it and use it for year-round camping. Included with the unit are the remote control which serves as the wall thermostat to control the unit. Because the unit is designed for this specific thermostat, it will not work with other pre-existing thermostats. It will, however, work with already installed ducts. The unit, controlled by either the remote or the plenum unit, has multiple functions, including cooling, heating, fan (with multiple fan speeds), dry mode, auto, temperature display and controls, clock, timer, sleep, and lock. These functions help give you the most control over your environment, creating a more comfortable and relaxing place for you to spend your vacation. Also, keep in mind that while this unit is rated for rooms up to 875 square feet, this number also depends on the layout of your air ducts, as they can help to carry the air into a bigger area. Perhaps the most important features of this unit are the noise level, the power draw, and the size. One of the biggest concerns with RV air conditioning units is how much noise they make. Because of the ones that come straight off the lot, RV AC units get a bad rap for being loud and annoying. This model, however, only creates 59.1 decibels of noise inside on the high setting. As a quick note, this unit is designed to be installed on a flat roof (less than 5 degrees inclination) that is between 3" and 5-1/2"" thick.

The fan on the heat pump is controlled through a temperature sensor near the evaporator coils. Unless this sensor reads temperatures below 64°F, the fan will run at a low speed. This is necessary to modulate power consumption and keep up efficiency.

Non-Ducted Information

This AC unit can fit roofs up to a maximum of 5 1/2" thick. We have optional bolts available for roofs thicker than 5 1/2" thick, up to 7 3/32" thick. The air conditioner is non-ducted and comes in black and white. Attractive and durable, it runs off of 115V power. With this model, the sound level is much lower than many of the other air conditioners on the market and the quality of the temperature is better. If you've ever turned on your RV AC unit while you're watching your favorite show or talking to a friend, you understand how important the low sound level is. No one wants to have to fight over their air conditioner just to be heard. While the air conditioner is powerful and efficient by itself, there are several things you can do to lessen energy use even further and keep your RV cooler. Close all the doors, skylights, and windows so that the cool air does not leave and hot air does not intrude into your space. Also, draw the curtains and open the shade or awning to keep the heat from the sun from warming up your RV. Cook outside of the RV when possible and park your RV in the shade if there is shade available. Turn off any unnecessary appliances to reduce the energy load. Adjust the temperature of the unit instead of turning the unit off to prevent frequent starting or stopping. Finally, in the case of very high temperatures, turn on the AC unit in advance during the morning.

There is yet another tip that many people already use. In an RV, having just an air conditioning unit is a good way to cool down but also a good way to mess up the humidity in your RV. Instead of only pushing air into your RV, you should also push it out with a roof vent fan. By placing a fan at one end of the RV and an RV AC unit at the other end, you create a flow of air that will even out the temperature and keep the air cleaner. Many people place the fan over their kitchen and the AC unit at the opposite end of their RV. This is because of the smells, heat, and humidity that can build up around the kitchen, with all of the cooking and food from that area. With your air flow set up in this way, your RV interior will feel cleaner and more comfortable.

Maintenance

There are also steps you can take to maintain the unit and lengthen its life. Though there are several important parts to the unit, the return air filter is the only part that needs regular maintenance. Clean and check the filter each week when in use to keep it clean from dirt, washing it in warm water and a little detergent frequently to ensure effective heating or cooling. Make sure it's dry before you replace it. You should also check that the bolts holding the unit on are still stable after the first three months. Throughout the life of the unit, these bolts should be checkers once a year. Ukraine marks its third Easter at war as it comes under fire from Russian drones and troops

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — As Ukraine marked its third Easter at war, Russia on Sunday launched a barrage of drones concentrated in Ukraine’s east, wounding more than a dozen people, and claimed its troops took control of a village they had been targeting.

Ukraine’s air force said that Russia had launched 24 Shahed drones overnight, of which 23 were shot down.

Six people, including a child, were wounded in a drone strike in the eastern Kharkiv region, regional Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said. Fourteen more were wounded in an airstrike Sunday afternoon on the Kharkiv regional capital, also called Kharkiv, the regional prosecutor’s office said. Syniehubov said the city was attacked by an aerial bomb.

Fires broke out when debris from drones that were shot down fell on buildings in the neighboring Dnipropetrovsk region. No casualties were reported.

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced Sunday that its troops had taken control of the village of Ocheretyne, which has been in the crosshairs of Russian forces in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. Drone footage obtained by The Associated Press showed the village battered by fighting. Not a single person is seen in the footage obtained late Friday, and no building in Ocheretyne appears to have been left untouched by the fighting.

Officials in Kyiv urged residents to follow Orthodox Easter services online due to safety concerns. Serhiy Popko, head of the Kyiv city administration, warned that “even on such bright days of celebration, we can expect evil deeds from the aggressor.”

In his Easter address, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on Ukrainians to be “united in one common prayer.”

In a video filmed in front of Kyiv’s Saint Sophia Cathedral, wearing a traditional Vyshyvanka embroidered shirt, Zelenskyy said that God “has a chevron with the Ukrainian flag on his shoulder.” With “such an ally,” Zelenskyy said, “life will definitely win over death.”

A majority of Ukrainians identify as Orthodox Christians, though the church is divided. Many belong to the independent Orthodox Church of Ukraine. The rival Ukrainian Orthodox Church was loyal to the patriarch in Moscow until splitting from Russia after the 2022 invasion and is viewed with suspicion by many Ukrainians.
