AT&T Trek 2 HD tablet can be yours for a buck (and a 2-year contract)

The 8-inch, Android Marshmallow tablet will be available for less than a dollar...if you sign a two-year agreement.

trek 2 hd

They say phone contracts are dead -- so how about a tablet contract instead?

That's the catch with AT&T's new Trek 2 HD tablet. You can walk out the door with the tablet for 99 cents beginning August 5, but you'll need to sign a 2-year service agreement or pay $7.50 a month (for a total commitment of $180, not including data service).

The 8-inch Android tablet is the successor to 2015's Trek HD , and has everything you'd expect in a middle-of-the-road budget tablet. Before you sign up, though, compare it to something like the $250 Asus ZenPad Z8 (which also offers 4G LTE, sans contract), as well as our other favorite budget slates .

The Trek 2 HD's full specs are as follows:

  • 8.0-inch HD Display
  • Stereo speakers with Dolby audio
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow Software
  • 5-megapixel rear camera
  • 5-megapixel front camera
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.5GHz octa-core processor
  • 16GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot for expansion
  • 4,600mAh battery
  • Prime Day Deals
  • Meta Quest 4
  • Google Pixel 9
  • Google Pixel 8a
  • Apple Vision Pro 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2
  • Samsung Galaxy Ring

AT&T goes on a second journey with the Trek 2 HD

Starting on the outside, the Trek 2 HD lives up to its name and features an 8-inch HD resolution display, which we assume will either have 1,280 × 720 or 1,280 × 800 resolution. Both selfie and main cameras weigh in at 5-megapixels, with dual front-facing Dolby Audio speakers pumping out sound.

A 1.5GHz octa-core Qualcomm processor powers the Trek 2 HD, with the 16GB of native storage augmented by up to 128GB through the Micro SD card slot. A 4,600mAh battery promises to deliver up to 10 and a half hours of usage, with the tablet offering 4G LTE connectivity on AT&T’s network.

Finally, the Trek 2 HD runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, though there is no mention of an update to the upcoming Android Nougat version of the OS. It looks to be a relatively clean implementation of Google’s mobile operating system, though expect to see quite a bit of AT&T bloat.

Overall, the Trek 2 HD seems like a solid midrange offering for those not expecting the world out of their Android tablets, even though we don’t know who manufactures the device. If there is enough here to peak your interest, the Trek 2 HD will be available online and through AT&T stores starting August 5.

At that point, you can either pick up the tablet for $1 with a two-year contract, pay $7.50 per month for 20 months, or pay the upfront $150 price tag.

On a related note, AT&T raked in $40.5 billion in revenue during the second quarter , though the company lost more video subscribers than it probably wanted.

Samsung has long fancied themselves the de facto kings of the modern smartphone. A top of the line Samsung device running cutting edge Android is hard to beat, but in recent years, Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus is certainly giving them a run for their money. Samsung has launched its newest flagship entry with the Galaxy S21 and OnePlus launched its OnePlus 8T in October of 2020. Which is better? We found out. Specs

AT&T Android Tablets

Today AT&T has unveiled the successor for its first own-brand Trek HD tablet from last year. The new device is called AT&T Trek 2 HD, and like its predecessor it's an affordable tablet that runs Android.

The Trek 2 HD comes with an 8-inch "HD" touchscreen (resolution is probably 1,280x800), a 1.5 GHz octa-core Qualcomm processor, 16GB of expandable storage, a pair of 5 MP cameras (one on the front, one on the back), dual front-facing Dolby Audio speakers, a USB Type-C port, and a 4,600 mAh battery with quick charging support. It runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow and weighs 12.8 ounces.

The tablet will become available online and in AT&T stores on August 5 for $0.99 with a two-year contract. Alternatively, you can pick one up using the carrier's installment plan, in which case you pay $7.50 per month for 20 months - adding up to a full retail price of $150.

AT&T Trek 2 HD Review

AT&T's affordable Trek HD 2 can handle some light multitasking and plenty of video streaming but is not the most powerful tablet out there.

trek-2-hd-1_1

AT&T has a few devices that they can call their own. The Trek 2 HD is the successor to the Trek, an affordable tablet that was made in house by the carrier. Well, the Trek 2 HD is here, and it is positioned with a focus on entertainment. This tablet is not meant to compete with the high-end tablets of the world, but rather can hold it’s own in the low to mid-range spectrum.

The Trek 2 HD has a bland design that will fit in with the most style. And no it doesn’t come in Rose Gold with a solid aluminium build like the iPad Pro. Instead, AT&T and ZTE, the tech company who makes the Trek for the carrier, opted for a polycarbonate plastic build.

And it does feel pretty solid in hand and, it can be held comfortably with one hand. The back has a slight grip to it that makes it easy to hold, and it gives you some texture. Although it does not truly serve any ascetic purposes, mainly just for a high-end like feel.

It is not waterproof, or drop proof like the name might suggest. The Trek 2 HD comes in at 12.8-ounces in weight and is a small tablet at 8.46″ x 4.92″ x 0.35″. Similarly to iPads and the upcoming Google Pixel smartphones, there is a chin at the top and bottom. AT&T only offers the Trek 2 HD in this black color.

The display is an 8-inch TFT HD panel with a 1280 X 800 resolution. This does not give off the sharpest picture, but most users shouldn’t have an issue with this. It performs well in low light situations, so if you want to watch some Netflix in bed, the Trek 2 HD can accomplish this. But be warned that is not the brightest display out there.

trek-2-hd-2_1

AT&T has opted to put a 1.5GHz octa-core Snapdragon processor with 2GB of RAM inside. This is a pretty standard processor with mid-range smartphones the Moto G4, but this is new ground for a tablet. With that being said it did perform well with web surfing and using not power intensive applications. If you are looking to game on a tablet, I will steer clear of the Trek 2 HD. It had substantial latency with games and even at times with multitasking between applications. On Geekbench the Trek 2 HD scored a 698 single-core and 2148 multi-core scores.

The front-facing and back cameras are 5-megapixel lenses. The front one is good for making hangouts, Snapchatting, or even duo calling. AT&T’s decision of a 5-megapixel rear camera delivered then average results. Images were not presenting colors in a very true way, and lighting was hard to get right.

Software and Connectivity

When the Trek 2 HD launched it was running the latest version of Android, 6.0 Marshmallow, but now it is not. There is no word on when or if the Trek 2 HD will get updated to Android 7.0 Nougat, but I wouldn’t be too concerned about this.

The software experience is smooth; it can have some latency at times, but this is to be expected with a low to mid range device. It is a relatively clean interface with not many customizations, but you do get plenty of pre-loaded applications.

AT&T’s 4G LTE network is accessible on the Trek 2 HD. In our testing region of Northern NJ and NYC, the device performed similarly to other AT&T devices. You can expect it to hit a majority of bars and should have 4G connectivity in most locations. After all, AT&T has covered a majority of the country with 4G LTE service.

At just $180 with no contract or commitment, the Trek 2 HD is not that bad of a deal. Especially when you consider that you get cellular service on this device. If you’re looking for a simple tablet that can handle some light multitasking and that is mainly for streaming Netflix or videos, this might be for you. I would suggest looking elsewhere for a device that can handle gaming and true multitasking.

The Trek 2 HD is available from AT&T now both in-stores and online. On AT&T Next the tablet comes in at $7.50 a month or $180 with no contract.

History of Moscow Oblast

The territory of the Moscow region was inhabited more than 20 thousand years ago. In the first millennium AD, this land was inhabited mostly by the Finno-Ugric peoples (Meryane and Meshchera). In the 9th-10th centuries, the Slavs began active development of the region. The population was engaged in hunting, fisheries, agriculture, and cattle breeding.

In the middle of the 12th century, the territory of the present Moscow region became part of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality, the first towns were founded (Volokolamsk in 1135, Moscow in 1147, Zvenigorod in 1152, Dmitrov in 1154). In the first half of the 13th century, the Vladimir-Suzdal principality was conquered by the Mongols.

In the 14th-16th centuries, Moscow principality became the center of unification of Russian lands. The history of the Moscow region is inextricably linked to military events of the Time of Troubles - the siege of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery by the troops of False Dmitry II, the first and second militias.

More historical facts…

In 1708, by decree of Peter the Great, Moskovskaya gubernia (province) was established. It included most of the territory of present Moscow oblast. In 1712, St. Petersburg became the capital of the Russian Empire and the significance of the Moscow region as the country’s economic center began to decrease.

In 1812, the Battle of Borodino took place near Moscow. It was the biggest battle of the Russian-French War of 1812. In the second half of the 19th century, especially after the peasant reform of 1861, the Moscow province experienced economic growth. In 1851, the first railway connected Moscow and St. Petersburg; in 1862 - Nizhny Novgorod.

The population of the Moscow region increased significantly (in 1847 - 1.13 million people, in 1905 - 2.65 million). On the eve of the First World War, Moscow was a city with a population of more than one million people.

In November, 1917, the Soviet power was established in the region. In 1918, the country’s capital was moved from St. Petersburg to Moscow that contributed to economic recovery of the province. In the 1920s-1930s, a lot of churches located near Moscow were closed, a large number of cultural monuments were destroyed. On January 14, 1929, Moscow Oblast was formed.

In 1941-1942, one of the most important battles of the Second World War took place on the territory of the region - the Battle for Moscow. In the postwar years, the growth of economic potential of the region continued; several science cities were founded (Dubna, Troitsk, Pushchino, Chernogolovka).

In the 1990s, the economy of Moscow Oblast experienced a deep crisis. Since the 1990s, due to the motorization of the population and commuting, road traffic situation in the Moscow region significantly deteriorated. Traffic jams have become commonplace.

Moscow Oblast - Features

Moscow Oblast is located in the central part of the East European Plain, in the basin of the rivers of Volga, Oka, Klyazma, Moskva. The region stretches from north to south for 310 km, from west to east - 340 km. It was named after the city of Moscow, which however is not part of the region. Part of the administrative authorities of the region is located in Krasnogorsk.

On the territory of the Moscow region, there are 77 cities and towns, 19 of them have a population of more than 100 thousand people. The largest cities are Balashikha (518,300), Podolsk (309,600), Mytishchi (262,700), Khimky (256,300), Korolyov (225,300), Lubertsy (209,600), Krasnogorsk (174,900), Elektrostal (149,000), Odintsovo (138,900), Kolomna (136,800), Domodedovo (136,100).

One of the most important features of the local economy is its proximity to Moscow. Some of the cities (Odintsovo, Krasnogorsk, Mytishchi) have become in fact the “sleeping districts” of Moscow. The region is in second place in terms of industrial production among the regions of Russia (after Moscow).

The leading industries are food processing, engineering, chemical, metallurgy, construction. Moscow oblast has one of the largest in Russia scientific and technological complexes. Handicrafts are well developed (Gzhel ceramics, Zhostov trays, Fedoskino lacquered miniatures, toy-making).

Moscow railway hub is the largest in Russia (11 radial directions, 2,700 km of railways, the density of railways is the highest in Russia). There are two large international airports - Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo. Vnukovo airport is used for the flights within the country.
