Trek XC bikes

Trek procaliber.

Trek Procaliber

Wheel Size: 29” Suspension travel: 100mm front

The Procaliber is Trek’s carbon XC hardtail and its lightest mountain bike. It’s a pure cross-country race bike optimized for fast courses where maximum pedaling efficiency is essential for climbing and acceleration. It features a rear IsoSpeed decoupler that provides extra compliance over rough roots and rocks.

Who it’s for: XC riders who want the lightest, most efficient bike, or who ride less-technical terrain.

Trek X-Caliber

Trek Xcaliber

Wheel Size: 29” (27.5” for S) Suspension travel: 100mm front

The X-Caliber is Trek’s entry-level, aluminum XC hardtail. The lightweight aluminum frame provides lots of performance on fast courses without breaking the bank. It’s a great option for newer riders looking to get into XC racing.

Who it’s for: XC riders and racers looking for a budget hardtail.

Trek Supercaliber

Trek Supercaliber

Wheel Size: 29” Suspension travel: 100mm front / 60mm rear

The Supercaliber is Trek’s lightest, most efficient, full-suspension XC bike. During development, Trek kept the Supercaliber under wraps (they literally hid the rear suspension during races) while Trek’s factory race team tested it at World Cups. The Supercaliber uses a unique IsoStrut suspension system with a frame-integrated shock. This provides 60mm of suspension travel, just enough to take the edge off bumps and harsh impacts while keeping the weight, stiffness, and efficiency close to the Procaliber hardtail. The Supercaliber is designed to be the perfect compromise between a hardtail and a 100mm full-suspension bike.

Who it’s for: XC riders looking for the lightest, most efficient full-suspension race bike available.

Trek Top Fuel

Trek Top Fuel

Wheel Size: 29” Suspension travel: 120mm front / 115mm rear

The Top Fuel is Trek’s full-suspension marathon XC bike. The previous generation Top Fuel was a pure XC race bike with 100mm of travel front and rear. In 2020, the travel was been increased to make it more capable on descents. The Top Fuel could be considered Trek’s “downcountry” bike, a cross-country bike that balances downhill performance and pedaling efficiency. It will hold its own in fast XC races, but it’s versatile enough for trail riders who enjoy big rides on technical terrain.

Who it’s for: Marathon XC racers and riders looking for a “downcountry” bike.

Trek trail bikes

Getting sendy on a Trek trail bike

Trek Fuel EX

Trek Fuel EX

Wheel Size: 29” (27.5” available for XS and S) Suspension travel: 140mm front / 130mm rear

The Fuel EX is Trek’s most popular mountain bike model, and for good reason. The latest generation of this all-rounder has been refined with more suspension travel and modern geometry to make it equally capable uphill and downhill. It’s designed to suit the majority of riders and the widest range of terrain. If you’re looking for a quiver killer bike that will feel comfortable, capable, and efficient enough for all types of riding, the Fuel EX is a top choice.

Who it’s for: Trail riders looking for one bike to handle everything from XC to technical downhill trails.

Trek Roscoe

Trek Roscoe

Wheel Size: 27.5” plus Suspension travel: 120mm front (100mm on XS)

The Roscoe is Trek’s basic aluminum trail hardtail with 27.5” plus tires for traction and comfort. The robust aluminum frame and affordable component builds make it a great choice for newer riders building their confidence and skills on the trail.

Who it’s for: Trail riders looking for a fun, inexpensive, easy to maintain hardtail trail bike.

Trek Stache and Full Stache

Trek Full Stache

Wheel Size: 29” plus Suspension travel: 120mm front / 130mm front and rear

Discontinued in 2021, the Stache and Full Stache were Trek’s 29-plus hardtail and full-suspension models, respectively. These extra-large wheels and tires enhance rollover, traction, and comfort. These models are loved by bikepackers who need to carry large amounts of gear and desire extra comfort for backcountry riding and multi-day journeys.

Who it’s for: Trail riders and bikepackers looking for a mountain bike that maximizes traction and comfort.

Trek Farley

Trek Farley

Wheel Size: 27.5” Fat Suspension travel: 100mm front or Rigid

The Farley is Trek’s fat bike specializing in terrain like snow and sand which require the additional “float” and traction of 4-5” wide fat tires. The newest generation of Farley uses 27.5” diameter fat tires instead of traditional 26” fat tires. Trek is a believer that using a larger diameter tire offers better performance in all conditions.

Who it’s for: Riders riding snow and sand.

Trek enduro bikes

Schralping it on a Trek enduro bike

Trek Remedy

Trek Remedy

Wheel Size: 27.5” Suspension travel: 160mm front / 150mm rear

The Remedy is Trek’s playful 27.5” trail bike. Older Remedy models were available with 29” wheels, but with the latest generation, Trek has committed to making the Remedy its sole 27.5” full-suspension bike. An ample amount of suspension travel allows the Remedy to tackle tough and steep downhill terrain while smaller 27.5” wheels make it feel easier to maneuver and throw around. It will suit riders who jump and jib their way down trails and who prioritize style and fun over all-out speed.

Who it’s for: Trail riders looking for a capable and playful bike.

Trek Slash

Wheel Size: 29” Suspension travel: 170mm front / 160mm rear

The Slash is Trek’s 29er enduro race bike. It provides the most suspension travel and slackest geometry short of Trek’s Session downhill bike. Available only with 29” wheels, it smooths out the gnarliest terrain and maximizes downhill speed. The Slash is used by Trek’s factory Enduro World Series race team and will suit riders looking for a competitive enduro race bike, or a bike that will enhance their confidence on steep and technical downhill trails.

Who it’s for: Enduro racers and riders looking for the most downhill capable bike that can still be pedaled uphill.

Trek MTB range

Trek has a huge selection of mountain bike models, and within every model, there is a wide range of builds to choose from. The hierarchy within models is described using letters and numbers that can be confusing to uninitiated buyers. Below is a guide to decoding Trek’s naming and numbering system.

[newsletter]

Trek mountain bike range

Trek mountain bike models use a number (e.g. Trek Fuel EX 9.9) to indicate the frame material and component build. Models with a 5 through 8 use aluminum frames, with 5 indicating entry-level builds and 8 indicating top-of-the-line aluminum builds.

Models with a 9 use carbon frames. To differentiate build levels within carbon models, Trek uses a decimal system that ranges from 9.5 to 9.9, with 9.5 indicating entry-level builds and 9.9 indicating top-of-the-line builds.

Higher numbered bikes cost more but are equipped with better components.

For example, a Fuel EX 9.9 ($9,499) has a top-of-the-line OCLV carbon frame, SRAM XX1 Eagle AXS drivetrain, Fox Factory suspension, and carbon wheels, stem, and handlebars. A Fuel EX 5 ($2,399) has a more budget-friendly aluminum frame, Shimano Deore drivetrain, entry-level RockShox and X-Fusion suspension, and alloy wheels, stem, and handlebars. In between are several Fuel EX models that offer different frame materials and component builds so riders can pick the bike that fits their needs and budget.

Trek suspension technology

Trek has a long history of innovation, and it has introduced several ground-breaking technologies to the sport. Here is a list of technology and features that are only found on Trek mountain bikes.

Trek RE:aktiv and Thru Shaft shocks

Reactive shock

In 2014, Trek worked with Penske Racing to develop RE:aktiv valve technology for its rear shocks. In RE:aktiv shocks, a spring-loaded valve inside the shock body provides increased low-speed compression for more pedaling support. When the shock's shaft speed increases on rough terrain, the valve opens up to quickly absorb impacts before closing again. RE:aktiv shocks are designed to reduce the need for lockouts and compression adjustment on full-suspension mountain bikes when pedaling on smooth terrain or climbing.

In 2018, Trek added Thru Shaft to its RE:aktiv shocks. Most mountain bike shocks are designed around an internal floating piston, or IFP. When a shock absorbs a bump, a damper shaft moves through the shock and displaces oil. This displaced oil needs to go somewhere, so it pushes against the IFP, compressing a gas charge behind the IFP.

The Thru Shaft design eliminates the need for an IFP by allowing the damper shaft to exit out the bottom of the shock. The damper no longer needs to compress an IFP to create space for displaced oil. This makes the shock more responsive and reduces friction. RE:aktiv Thru Shaft shocks are currently found on the Fuel EX, Remedy, and Slash.

Trek IsoStrut

Trek Isostrut

IsoStrut is a minimal, frame-integrated shock designed to provide the comfort and control of rear suspension while maintaining weight, stiffness, and efficiency that rivals a hardtail. To save weight, instead of an ABP suspension pivot, there is flex built into the seat stays to provide a virtual pivot. In its current form, it is only found on the Supercaliber cross-country bike where it provides 60mm of suspension travel.

Trek Knock Block and Straight Shot down tubes

Knock Block detail

Most mountain bike frames have a curve in the down tube where it joins the head tube to prevent interference with the fork crown. Trek’s Straight Shot down tubes, however, are straight from the head tube to the bottom bracket to increase frame stiffness and strength. This means the fork crown might hit the down tube if it spins around during a crash.

The Knock Block system prevents this with a chip in the top tube that interacts with a keyed stem, spacers, and headset top cover. The Knock Block stops the handlebars and fork from spinning, preventing the fork crown from striking the down tube. There's also a molded guard on the down tube as a redundant measure. As an added bonus, Knock Block also prevents brake and shift levers from scratching or damaging the top tube.

Knock Block can be found on all of Trek’s carbon mountain bike models and the aluminum versions of the Fuel EX, Remedy, and Slash.

Trek 29er Mountain Bikes

  • Bicycling Catalog
  • 29-Inch Wheel (29ers)

What is a 29er?   29er refers to a mountain bike wheel size standard that measures (with tires mounted) about 29 inches in diameter.  It's currently the largest standard wheel size available. 29ers are crazy fast because the bigger wheels cover more ground with every single pedal stroke.  Big wheels also create a shallow approach angle when riding over obstacles making it easier to keep speed through those white-knuckle techy sections.  Plus, more tire tread contacting the ground provides better-than-ever traction.

Who is it for?  29ers are by far the most popular wheel size used on Ogden trails.  They're found on the most popular bikes we sell like the Trek Fuel EX.  They make riding a bike off-road easier.  Any rider who wants a smoother, faster, more stable ride with more traction should test ride a 29er.

Feel like 29ers are a bit too much to handle? No worries, check out our inventory of Trek 27.5-inch bikes.

Trek Superfly 29er Hardtail

trek mtb 29 carbonio

Superfly is THE choice for the aficionado seeking the fastest, most advanced, best 29er out there.

  • USER REVIEWS

It's a truly great bike. Fast, light, superb handling. I live it.

There are no weaknesses

The first carbon bike I've owned. The bike is light, fast and fun.

The bottom bracket bearing wore out earlier than I would have expected.

Awesome Bike , Great improvement with the new 142 thru axle ,wow ,awesome stiff. I am 6' 230lbs , Bench 350,squat 650,this bike is a great at climbing and it goes down almost as well. Love the G2 ,always have.

I have owned many mtn bikes (20+) ,if ur lookin for a fast climbing machine that descends very well ,this is a great choice. Just got mine ,it's wonderful. I will let u knw in August how it held up. I rode 1700 on a rd bike last yr and 400 in the woods, look to do 1,000 in the woods on this. Trek Superfly 29er rules.

for the Superfly 5 2014 18,5 frame which I am rating: frame design - geometry, great handling

regarding the frame, none. Components, there is Supefly 5 - 9, you get what you pay for, choose the class which suits you and your budget and upgrade what ever you like, mainly the wheels I would recommend.

I am rating the Superfly 2014-2016 alluminium frame. Superfly 5 – 9 have the same frame and are priced according to components selection. My frame is Superfly 5 2014 size 18,5 virtual. I wanted this frame. Components, I upgraded practically everything. Great frame, fantastic geometry, handling could not be better. I had TREK Paragon 29“ 2011 which is the same design as Superfly 2012 and 2013. This frame is a next generation from these. I will repeat what I wrote for the Paragon 2011 review; It is fast, nimble, at high speeds as well while maintaining great stability. G2 geometry really works. The frame is stiff, well built. This new frame design only confirms these facts and only adds to the overall riding confidence. One big advantage of TREK 29” HT is the frame length. Probably the longest 29” HT frame out there. Size M is as long as size L of most other brands which means you can get a one size smaller frame to fit you perfectly and you get more standing clearance. It only would not fit the long legged (models). If you are of this stature and want a 29” HT, TREK Superfly is maybe the best option. It does not come with 12x142 rear wheel hub through axle set up. You have to get the TREK 12x142 conversion set. I got it, but still have to get the wheels for it. For now I am using WTB Stryker TCS Cross Country Race 29? 2012 wheel set (9x135 QR) which I used on my Paragon for about 3 years. They are a fantastic wheel set, but can not be converted to 12x142 ;( Since it was introduced in autumn 2013 I really wanted it. At the time I was still happy with the previous superfly frame design (riding the Paragon 2011) and did not quite realize what can be improved. Compared with the previous frame, this one has: more size options (added the 18,5 which I have), closed convert dropouts - 12x142 rear axle option, internal cable routing, shorter chain/seat stays – stiffer frame, curved seat tube – better pedaling angle and BB are app. 0,5 cm lower which results in better stability. After riding the Paragon 2011 for app 3 years I switched to this Superfly 2014, riding feel is noticeably better. I can not say that the difference is dramatic, but it is noticeable, I have just a little bit more riding confidence feel. Highly recommended.

Marin Nail Trail 29" 2011, TREK Paragon 29" 2011

Fast, climbes faster than my colleagues at the office, and is much easier to control.

Haven't found any yet

I simply love this bike, almost as much as my wife and Stabak football team. It beats me older bike (Specialized Sumpjumper) in every respect. Everyday use showes it is faster, and it is much easier to controll. For me it also feels more responsive when climbing.

Gary Fischer X-Cal, LaPierre 529, Specialized Stumpjumper.

Fast, responsive, great technical capabilities for an XC bike, wonderful handling at all speeds, strong brakes, great fork, great price, cranks are easily upgraded due to being compatible with many different hollow tech type cranks.

No TLR wheels on 2014 SF 5 (fixed for 2015 models), a little heavy for an XC race bike (it doesn't feel heavy though)

If you can only have one bike this is definitely one to look at. The few gripes I had with the 2014 Superfly 5 (the lowest model available) have been fixed for 2015. The upside of not having those upgrades was that it pushed me to swap to parts that are superior to what you will find on the current stock models. I like going fast but I wanted a bike that could handle the technical sections like a trail bike. The SF definitely fits that bill even on stock components. I swapped in 2010 Bontrager Rythm Elites and paired them with Team Edition 2.3" XR3 tires. The bike is now faster due to the better wheels/hubs but also handles better due to the more aggressive tires and stronger all mountain wheels. I also changed to a single ring and dropped some weight and maintenance that way. Not everyone will want it set up like this but for me it's the best way to go. The bottom line is that the Superfly is light, maneuverable, fast and fun. I've gone back and forth on the same trails with this 29er and smaller 26" wheeled bikes and I can honestly say that even on the tightest of trails this 29er doesn't give up any maneurerability due to it's bigger wheel size and it's much faster on everything else. I know a lot of people go with the carbon frame on this board, and some of them have had durability issues. I just can't justify that extra money, the alluminum frame is already super comfortable for a hardtail, fairly light and I don't have to worry about cracking issues. I've had zero reliability concerns over the last 1200 miles and the only wear item I had to replace was the chain. Even the XR3 tires which have over 700 miles on them at this point look like they will be able to go a lot further.

I'm reviewing a Superfly 5, 2014, 19.5 inch frame: Handles well at all speeds Climbs well. Great on flowing trails Great geometry Handles technical sections well for an XC oriented bike. Cockpit dialed in. Accelerates well if you're in shape

Not tubeless ready. A bit heavy for a bike in this category. Rather have a 2 X 10 drivetrain. Crank set should be upgraded. Needs race tires (Bontrager XR1s are good all around tires, but not so "racy" like the Schwalbe 29er tires.

This bike is fast if you are, and handles flowing trails like a dream. For an XC oriented trail bike it handles technical, mid west style hill riding really well. I've taken some crazy jumps on it just fine, bombed ski slopes, hopped a lot of logs, ridden really fast. I thought to change out handle bar for a straight, but I feel they dialed in the cockpit really well with the slightly bent handlebar it has. It has Deore/ XT, but not the shadow version. It didn't feel as crisp as the Specialized Crave at the price point, but felt more forgiving, definitely better downhill. The Crave felt maybe a bit jumpy in comparison. Pretty paint job, great geometry, and well thought out frame. However, what I have since discovered is that you're not getting an entry level race bike for this price point ($1,300-$1,500) (although it's billed as such), but really just a more XC oriented hardtail trail bike. My naivete. Now I have to upgrade the wheelset to get ready for some races. (I'm new to XC racing.) I put a remote lockout on it too. The 2015 model has a remote lockout standard, but I believe there was price creep on the 2015 model. More people I know ride Specialized, but some seem to love Trek, too. Piece of advice: don't buy to save money-wait til you can spend the money for the bike you want, or you will spend more upgrading over the long run.

2011 Trek Superfly ELITE Relatively light, handles well, rides

Trek Corporation

I purchased a $4,700.00 Trek Superfly Elite (carbon frame), when after a few rides the frame cracked (as did many others). Trek (the company) replaced my ELITE with an entry level DELUXE. After the LBS received the frame, I knew right away this was an inferior cheaper frame. The obvious feature was NO replaceable dérailleur hanger and the fact that it weight a quarter pound more than my original frame. Prior to purchasing my Superfly, my inquiry to the bike shop retailer with regard to warranty was explained as- "Trek will replace with the exact frame, if the exact frame is not available they replace with the next model up" THAT WAS A COMPLETE LIE. Trek was insistent that the replacement frame was identical to my original. When I asked them about the weight difference and replaceable dérailleur hanger, they had no answer and just hung up. Trek's Lifetime (limited) is very limited. Caveat venditor- buyer beware of Trek policy's

Great frame for aluminum category ! Fantastic brakes ! Decent shifting. Rides quick !

The seat. The seat. The seat. Bike supplied with non tubeless compatible tires.

A decent reliable Shimano drivetrain with excellent brakes and an awesome (for aluminum) frame. TREK 2014 Superfly 6. At about $1650 this would make a great casual race bike or a better bike touring load hauler with its nice frame. These should be out there at a discount now that the 2015 models are coming out. A better wheelset, tires, and seat are all this bike needs.

grippy shimano brakes, wide gear range with triple crankset, stiff frame

a bit heavy, front derailleur a tad slow

bought a 2013 Superfly in July 2014. Got great price from City Cycle in Corte Madera. Love the way the 29" tires roll over terrain that was slow going on my Klein Attitude w/26" wheels. Actually bought it to replace a Specialized carbon road bike that was stolen. I put 700c x 38 mm Michelin road tires on the rims and it handles great on pavement. Love flying over the trails with the stock 2.2" MTB tires. Shimano brakes are quiet and confident. Had to get 2013 model to get triple crankset. 2014s are all compacts. I use that 3rd front chainring all the time, on the road and on trails. Very happy with the bike.

Trek Superfly Pro 29er review

Trek's flagship big-wheeled race hardtail lightens up for 2012

James Huang/Future Publishing

James Huang

trek mtb 29 carbonio

The 2012 Trek Superfly Pro builds on the success of last year's Superfly Elite carbon 29er hardtail, adding an upgraded spec that lops a full pound off the build plus a through-axle and better tires that improve its overall usability. It's speedier and more fun to ride than before but that extra performance carries with it a hefty price premium.

Ride & handling: Excellent G2 geometry, stiff all around

The 2012 Superfly Pro essentially wears the same frame as last year's Elite so, not surprisingly, our list of likes and dislikes carries over, too. Handling is once again especially sweet, given Bontrager's trick G2 fork crown offset and its resultant trail, which mimics that of a 26in bike and generates a particularly light feel up front for a big-wheeler. Close confines at low speed, in particular, are no problem for the Superfly's nimble personality and we never felt like we were fighting the front end, even on tight uphill switchbacks.

High-speed handling is reassuringly stable for a dedicated cross-country bike, too, thanks to a smart 69.3-degree head tube angle that retains quick steering without feeling unnervingly twitchy and a low bottom bracket that keeps your center of gravity close to the ground. Coupled with the big wheels, there was generally little drama when mindlessly bombing through rock gardens but that same low bottom bracket will produce more than a few pedal strikes if you're not mindful.

Given the bike's racing intentions, it's no surprise that it's dutifully quick under power. Stiff carbon fibers and monstrous tube cross-sections – including Trek's ultra-wide 95mm bottom bracket shell and broadly spaced chainstays – yield a stout backbone and firm foundation for big pedaling efforts. Likewise, very good front triangle torsional rigidity keeps the bars from moving excessively when you're sprinting or climbing out of the saddle.

Add in the bike's impressive 9.66kg (21.30lb, complete, w/o pedals) weight and it's no surprise that the Superfly Pro is a perfect companion for long climbs. Riding position is similarly race-ready with a puny 103mm-long head tube on our 17.5in tester that produced a suitably low hand position when paired with a slightly negative-rise stem and flat bar.

Though stiff, the Superfly Pro isn't quite as unyieldingly efficient as some other machines we've tested recently. Likewise, ride comfort falls a bit shy of the best examples in the market with a rear end that filters out high-frequency buzz but doesn't offer much vertical flex to speak of. Trek attempt to ameliorate this with the Superfly Pro's slim 27.2mm-diameter seatpost but even that effort is thwarted by the Bontrager Race X Lite ACC post's aluminum core.

Despite this, overall comfort has improved over last year's Superfly Elite. The new Bontrager 29-1 tires are generously sized at 2.2in across and suitably floaty for all-around trail duty yet still roll extremely quickly thanks to the ramped, low center knobs. Add in the 15mm through-axle fork dropouts and the noticeable bump in front-end stiffness relative to last year's open dropouts, and the Superfly Pro is not only slightly more comfortable and a bit faster than before but also a more suitable all-around trail machine, too.

Frame: Huge cross-sections, wide spacing

In typical fashion, Trek infuse the Superfly Pro with lots of smart engineering but don't stray too far from convention in terms of tube shaping. Key features include a tapered 1-1/8 to 1-1/2in head tube and a 95mm-wide bottom bracket shell – both with molded-in carbon fiber bearing seats. There's also a highly asymmetrical seat tube, carbon dropouts with bolt-in aluminum plates and standard 135mm spacing, and especially wide-set chainstays that lend lots of tire clearance

A neat touch is the bonded-on rubberized plate on the down tube underside to ward off impacts from trail debris – something we made liberal use of on Colorado's notoriously rocky terrain. Frame weight is impressive, though not groundbreaking, at 1,340g including the rear derailleur hanger, seatpost collar, water bottle bolts, and chain stay and down tube guards (which aren't easily removable). Cables are externally routed beneath the top tube for easy maintenance and the front derailleur bolts directly to the seat tube to minimize positioning errors.

Equipment: Race ready but still trail friendly

As Trek's flagship cross-country race machine, little expense has been spared dressing up the Superfly Pro frame. Shift performance from the ultralight SRAM XX group was once again fantastic with uncannily positive and fast front shifts – even under climbing or at low cadence – coupled with impeccably precise and consistent rear shifts. In short, gear changes were simply something we never gave a second thought about during testing.

Likewise, the RockShox SID XX 29 fork was well suited for the task with an impressively sturdy chassis, smooth and smartly progressive action through the 100mm stroke, and a well-tuned damper that tackles both trail buzz and bigger hits with equal aplomb. More demanding and complicated sections of trail are still better handled by RockShox's more sophisticated Motion Control BlackBox damper but given the bike's cross-country focus, we're guessing most users will be willing to sacrifice a bit of ride control for the convenient XLoc hydraulic remote lockout lever.

We unfortunately can't heap the same level of praise on the Avid XX brakes. Lever feel, power, modulation and ergonomics were all excellent but both ends squawked loudly under hard braking – wet or dry, and regardless of pad or rotor condition. Both brakes were reliable throughout testing, but only after we bled the front straight out of the box.

The vast majority of the included Bontrager kit is excellent, in particular the Race X Lite Carbon Big Sweep flat bar with its comfy 12-degree bend, the comfortable and maneuverable Evoke 4 titanium railed saddle, and the fantastic 29-1 tires with their supple, high-volume casings, fast roll and surprisingly confident grip in all but marbles and mud.

As we noted last year, though, we'd still prefer to see a different seatpost included as the carbon-wrapped aluminum Race X Lite ACC model is too stiff to take advantage of its small 27.2mm diameter. We traded it out for Bontrager's softer – and lighter – Race XXX Lite all-carbon model and instantly got a big boost in ride comfort.

The included Bontrager Race X Lite FCC wheels are conveniently tubeless-ready (as are the tires, though the requisite rim strips and valve cores annoyingly aren't included with the bike) and they feel both stiff and sturdy enough for genuine trail use, not just race duty. Thankfully, we never experienced any of the unnerving pinging and popping from the freehub body that we encountered with last year's Bontrager hubs. However, they're a little heavy for a bike of this level, particularly given the premium US$6,829.99/£5,000 asking price.

One place we're happy not to see the Bontrager label, however, is on the grips. Last year's foam grips were light but too narrow, prone to rotating on the bar and uncomfortable. Trek have wisely switched to ESI's silicone foam rubber grips, which are still super-light but far more shock absorbent, grippier in your hands and far less apt to move. Perhaps the best testament is the fact that even Trek's own Subaru-Trek professional team have used these for years.

Overall, the Trek Superfly Pro is a top-shelf ride and undoubtedly a better bike than the Elite model we tested last year – but then again, it should be considering it's roughly US$2,000 more expensive. It won't be a world beater, however, until it gets nicer wheels, a softer seatpost and a more refined ride quality.

First Look: Trek Stache Carbon 29+ Hardtail

A year ago, Trek introduced the Stache, a unique 29+ trail hardtail with oversized 29×3.0˝ tires and a remarkably nimble frame that would allow hardtail diehards to experience the thrill of the most technical terrain. For 2017, they are expanding their line-up: Find all the information below.

Stache 9.8 Angle

The original Stache won over riders around the world for its confidence-inspiring handling, capability, and sheer fun. And now, they have packed all the good parts of the previous platform into an expanded lineup with lightweight carbon options and key spec upgrades, setting a new benchmark in the trail hardtail category.

Stache 9.6 Angle

The newly expanded Stache lineup includes two OCLV Mountain Carbon models (Stache 9.8 and 9.6), along with two Alpha Platinum Aluminum models (Stache 7 and 5). Stache will also be available as a carbon frameset, boosting a massive tyre clearance for 29×3.0” tyres.

The new OCLV Mountain Carbon frame of Stache 9.8 and 9.6 weighs about 400 grams less than its alloy counterpart, and also benefits from a more aggressive geometry with a 15mm longer reach, giving the rider the ability to run a shorter stem for added control and a bottom bracket that is 5mm lower for increased stability through corners.

Stache 9.8 is equipped with the all-new Rock Shox 29+ Pike fork, Bontrager Line Pro 35mm cockpit, and Bontrager Drop Line dropper post. Bontrager’s Line Pro 40 OCLV Carbon wheels complete the lightweight carbon package. The capable Stache 9.8 tips the scales at 12.3 kg.

29 Carbon Wheelset Extreme Review

The fully carbon 29 carbon wheelset provides excellent lateral stiffness. Advanced carbon fiber routing increases vertical compliance and comfort. Dual cross wires on front and rear wheels improve ride quality and control.

Part 1: Beginning: Overview of 29 Carbon Wheelset

Part 2: advantages and disadvantages, part 3: precautions for mountain bike riding.

All parts of a bike are essential for successful riding, but without a wheelset, you’re not going anywhere, literally. Light and stiff 29 carbon wheelset make top machines accelerate and handle like formula f1. If you put some elemental wheelset on it, it will lose half of its racing look.

Similarly, if you put great wheels on a basic bike, you can count on significant gains in dynamics and bike control. To illustrate this with a simple example, we’ll just tell you that you’ll gain more in the race by putting 1500 gram wheels on a 1600 g aluminum mountain bike than by using 1900 gram wheels on a carbon MTB, whose frame weighs 1 kg. Your bike will be heavier but much faster and more reactive in handling.

What You Must Know

Today’s XC races and challenging MTB mountain marathons are the most demanding mountain biking disciplines for equipment. This is because wheelsets are expected to be extremely light to climb uphill efficiently and, most importantly, be ready for hundreds of short accelerations. On the other hand, these super lightweight components must withstand the heavy loads of rock gardens and land huge drops. This is the only discipline in cycling where the top riders fly downhill at the racing speed of an intermediate endurance rider while climbing uphill very fast. The wheels must therefore bridge two worlds that lie at entirely opposite poles.

29 Carbon Wheelset

MTB racing wheels for XCM and CXO need to be as light as possible yet stiff enough to give the rider complete control over the bike and perfectly transfer power from the pedals to speed. On the other hand, they cannot be too hard. They must “blend in” with the surroundings.

They must also have a bit of plasticity when the wheels get stuck between boulders. Comfort is also essential, i.e., absorption of uneven terrain. When professional cyclists are testing wheels, they have several similar sets of wheels available for pre-production testing, but they differ in the number of spokes. Their practice suggests that the choice is not always for many spokes – it is worth bearing in mind that too-hard wheels will not be suitable either. Another aspect is the properly adapted width of the rim to the width of the tire used. One should also not forget about the durability of these components – against distortion and higher mileage (which will indeed be provided mainly by marathon runners) and the resistance of bearings in hubs against bad weather conditions.

There’s no doubt that the low weight of the wheels is the absolute most crucial factor determining the dynamics of our mountain bike. The lighter the wheels, the easier it is to accelerate our bike. We’ll thank for a small number of grams the more the interval nature of the route we’re competing on, similarly, in the mountains, where a light set will give us the feeling of “flying” during a climb.

The most important thing is the rotating mass, or what you spin. Of course, the whole wheel rotates, but we are most interested in the low weight of those elements which are farthest from the wheel axis. Therefore, the rims are critical to dynamics, followed by spokes and nipples, and only at the end by the hubs. A better investment in terms of performance will be to buy light rims and heavier hubs than the other way round.

The weight range here is very different – very soft and off-road capable sets start from about 1200-1300 grams, and up to 1.5 kg of the whole group still means a light background. If our wheels weigh between 1450 and 1700 grams, we can treat them as a light and dynamic set, which does not limit us in sports competitions. Lighter ones will be costly, and heavier ones are already a noticeable limitation.

carbon 29 mtb wheelset

Choosing the right rims is incredibly important. It’s basically where the total carbon 29er wheelset puzzle starts. There are carbon and aluminum models available on the market. Those made of carbon material are undoubtedly a shelf higher in terms of the bike’s dynamics and the feel of the terrain. Usually, carbon rims are also lighter, which means they are faster. This is not a rule because while top-shelf models are super soft, essential carbon wheels can have rims more than well-known and popular lightweight aluminum rims from DT Swiss, e.g., No Tubes ZTR.

However, if we take two sets of identical weight on the trail, the carbon one will still have an advantage over wheels on aluminum rims. Carbon ones are usually stiffer and, at the same time, more resilient and comfortable. They offer more cushioning and are more dynamic on obstacles. They give us a slight boost while pumping on moguls, coming out of bumps, or transitioning from turn to turn during aggressive sections. Unfortunately, they cost much more, but it will be money well spent if you can afford them!

A critical aspect in Mtb wheelset 29 carbon rims is their width – the bigger it is, the better the support of tires in curves, the possibility of better alignment of wide tires on the rim, and lower possible pressure. In a word – wide rims will make you more, faster, and more confident in the field. The current standard is between 25 and 30 mm. It is good if you can base the wheels on rims weighing up to 450 grams, and an absolute “must-have” for racing is their compatibility with a tubeless system.

29 carbon Mtb wheelset on an excellent wheel is spokes. By their shape or profile and the number of spokes, we can adjust the wheel’s stiffness, its ability to absorb bumps, and resistance to deformation. This is also an area for slimming down the bike. For discerning riders who expect low weight and high stiffness, we can recommend the purchase of wheels based on flat spokes. These are clearly more expensive than classic round ones, but they can weigh extremely little and at the same time be very stiff laterally.

On the other hand, many reputable manufacturers do not base their MTB wheels on this type of spoke. Perhaps this is because a flat spoke seems to be less resistant to torsional forces. And there may be a feeling that the wheels behave less stable when braking. These are details, though, and depend on the braiding itself.

Obviously, the hubs must be adjusted to the type and number of spokes. Of course, it is nice if we manage to get into possession of lightweight models, but above all, here, it is worth focusing on the quality of bearings and their sealing – both in the hubs themselves and in the drum. 29 carbon wheelset hubs are exposed to tons of water, mud, and sand, yet in good quality products, bearings can withstand even 2-3 seasons of racing. On the other hand, poor products sometimes require 2-3 bearing set replacements per season. That is why we should not save on quality here, even at the expense of higher hub weight.

Besides, it is worth focusing on details. The wider the flanges are spaced, the softer the spoke lock angle. This results in better stiffness parameters with less tension and less fatigue on the spokes and rims. It is also good to choose models with the most extensive support point for the frame and fork. This means end cups with the largest possible surface area.

It is also worth considering whether you plan to change your drivetrain in the nearest future. And whether the purchased hub model will be ready for a possible change from a classic drum to Sram’s XD or Shimano’s Micro Spline. Some leading brands have options to use all three systems. It is worth considering if we look at the wheels in the perspective of several seasons of use.

29-inch carbon Mtb wheelset models will be most comfortable for tall people. They are designed for professionals who want a comfy ride over long distances. The large size allows you to reach high speeds.

The large size will enable you to get high rates, and at the same time, they are stable, so covering kilometers will be comfortable. When looking for a new model of 29 carbon wheelset, pay special attention to such parameters as stiffness and weight. Undoubtedly, the lightest will be those made of carbon, i.e., carbon fiber. They are most often chosen by professionals, for whom it is essential to reduce the vehicle weight as much as possible.

Carbon fiber is widely known and used in practically every sports discipline, where strength and low weight count. Bicycle frames made of this material make it possible to design light and very stiff structures. At the same time, they are great at improving the comfort of the rider.

One of the main benefits of using carbon 29er wheelset in your wheels is their inability to create flat spots as aluminum rims do. With a big, sharp bump, aluminum rims flatten out, causing uneven spoke tension throughout the wheel.

Carbon rims, when not damaged, always return to their round shape. This means that with proper construction, the tension of the spokes should not change. This translates into less time spent checking and re-tensioning the spokes after a few rides and more time on the trail.

Although all 29 carbon wheelset Mtb can be designed and manufactured in very different ways that you like, carbon mountain bike rims have the potential to be very strong and stiff yet lightweight. Using a more rigid carbon rim allows the rider to take turns sharper and more confidently and accelerate out of corners more quickly. This is much more difficult to achieve with aluminum rims.

Disadvantages

One of the disadvantages of using a 29 inch carbon Mtb wheelset is that they are not safe to use when they get damaged. Compared to aluminum rims, when a carbon rim breaks or becomes damaged, it must be removed and replaced immediately. With an aluminum rim, when it is dented or flat, it can still be adjusted, tightened, and ridden. A damaged alloy rim may not maintain the same level of performance, but it is still safe to ride.

Another disadvantage of carbon rims is that they are more expensive than comparable aluminum rims. The possibility of investing in carbon rims is undoubtedly an essential factor to consider. Especially for those on a tight budget.

Carbon 29er wheelset is undoubtedly a great way to improve our bike’s performance noticeably. However, it is worth considering that it is not a solution for everyone and all conditions. When considering such a purchase, it is worth investing in even heavy and cheap spare wheels.  We will be able to use it in autumn and winter.

So, if we are looking for a good quality bike, we are inevitably condemned to carbon regardless of the type. With the current mass production, it is simply not worth it otherwise. Except for random cases, carbon is practically indestructible. It does not wear out, is not affected by weather conditions. And it is resistant to the effects of time. On top of that, cheaper carbon models tend to be built with durability in mind. The most expensive, lightest, limited edition ones tend to be for the competitive rider, paid for by a sponsor, whose bike may not necessarily last a season.

Geographic coordinates of Elektrostal, Moscow Oblast, Russia

Coordinates of elektrostal in decimal degrees, coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
