There are many forts in India and all these forts are the contributions of various rules and rulers here. However the hill forts are something that definitely attracts a lot more attention, what say? A fort, on top of the hill, with verdant beauty around, sounds really exciting. The Visapur Fort is one such hill fort located in Maharashtra. The height, the location as well as the tranquil ambience of this fort makes it a frequented spot for tourists. However there is a catch too. A proper full fledged trek is necessary to reach this beautiful hill fort though. The journey to this fort is even more alluring than reaching the destination itself.

So keep on reading as I will mention everything about the  Visapur Fort  and  Visapur Fort Trek  in this article. You will get all necessary information that you might need to plan a successful trip to this location.

Visapur Fort

Overview of visapur fort.

Located at an altitude of 4000 feet above sea level in Lonavala, the Visapur Fort is one of the popular tourist destinations in Maharashtra. Moreover the Visapur Fort trek is also one of the most popular treks in the Pune Mumbai area. This is like a real trekking expedition where you need to put in real effort to actually reach the top of the fort. The level of this trek is easy to medium though but it would require quite a bit of effort too.  Visapur Fort trek time  is approximately 2 hours from the base however it depends on the route that you are taking too.

This is a fort that is a few centuries old and according to people Chatrapati Shivaji was the creator of this fort.  Visapur Fort height  is approximately 3556 feet. It was one of his ways to keep a check of all the movements downhill and in the plains. This place almost served like his watch tower. Moreover the construction of this fort goes back to the period from 1713-1720 CE. According to some historians Balaji Vishwanath the first Peshwa of the Maratha empire was the creator of this fort. Because of the strategic location of this fort it was very difficult to attack this first. Furthermore even after some attempts it was tough to fire cannons here.

Caves in Visapur Fort

At present there is not much to see here as most of the  Visapur fort Lonavala  is in ruins. But what makes it exceptional is the all encompassing view that this location offers. Along with that on the western side of the fort there is a bastion. Unlike many other forts the bastion here is quite unique in its structure and construction. On the northwestern side there is a fountain present too.

Best time to visit Visapur Fort

This is one of the most popular intermediate level treks in the Pune- Mumbai Express highway. It is a popular trek too because of the waterfalls. And mostly the waterfalls are in their best form during or after monsoon. During summers these waterfalls looks nothing but dried rocky beds. You can easily opt for this waterfall trek during the monsoon to enjoy the lush greenery along with the gushing waterfall. It is undoubtedly going to be one of the most memorable experiences of your life. Also remember that this is a day trek. However it is possible to overnight camp on the top of the plateau as well. So if you are opting for that, plan your visit accordingly.

Visapur Fort Trek

There are some ways by which you can reach the top of the fort.

Malavali to Visapur Fort

To reach Visapur fort via this route at first you will have to reach the Malavali station. It is however a confusing route to reach the fort. From Bhaje caves walk 15 to 20 minutes leaving the stairway. There will be some small huts and broken stairs on the way. And then there are some more stairs that you need to climb until you reach a temple. Also there are two big caves here as well that can accommodate up to about 40 people. Further from there you will have to climb a few more stairs that will take you to the Visapur Fort.

Visapur Fort from Pune

This route to reach the Visapur Fort is one of the most convenient options to reach here. If you have your own vehicle then you can drive from Pune towards Lonavala on NH 48. Then exit the highway at Karla to reach Malavali Station and from there you need to reach the Bhaje village. Moreover there is a pay and park service where you can keep your vehicle. Another route is to drive through the Pune Mumbai Expressway and then turn towards Lonavala. Then the route is similar to the previous route.

You can opt for buses as well from Seagate at Pune and get down at Malavali station. From there you will find shared auto rides for Rs. 40 per person or you can also walk down for 2.5 km.

Another option is to take a local train to Lonavala that runs on an hourly basis. Tickets cost about Rs. 10 to reach the Malavali station. Basically in all the above mentioned routes from Pune you will have to reach Malavali first which is the base to the Visapur Fort.  Visapur Fort distance from Pune  is about 65 km and the driving time is near about 90 minutes.

Bhaje Village Trail

This is another way to reach the Visapur Fort. For this route first you will have to drive via Mumbai Pune expressway to reach Lonavala and then Malavali. From there you will have to reach Bhaje village. There are pay and park services available as well. You can also take a bus to reach the base location as well. Also if you are travelling from Lonavala you can even hire a rickshaw to reach the Malavali station from there. The distance from there is only 12 km till Malavali and another 4 km till Bhaje. Local trains are also available from Pune to Lonavala. From there you will have to reach the Malavali station and then take a shared ride or walk till Bhaje village.

Bhaje village trek to Visapur Fort

Visapur Fort trek distance  from Bhaje village is for 2.5 hours to 3 hours and the difficulty level is moderate. This is mostly a flat walk and you can even spot the walls of the fort from the trail. After the first 4 km of the trek you will have to take the left trail that goes towards Visapur Fort. For convenience there are some arrows marked here through the forest. This trail is also famous for  Visapur Fort waterfall , and if you wish to enjoy that view, try this journey during the monsoon. It is that time when the waterfalls are at their fullest and you will be able to enjoy the waterfall here. In summer however you will find only dry rocks here. But the way is not uncomfortable as there are enough shedded trees here too.

Then you will have to continue for another 30 to 40 minutes to reach the top of the plateau. It can be one of the most mesmerizing views that you can enjoy here. You will have ample options to explore at this spot like small and large water tanks. There is a flag, Hanuman temple and grinders which were earlier in use for various constructions here.

Patan Village Trail

This is another village that is close to Lonavala. However this is one of the trickiest routes to reach the fort. From Patan village initially you will have to go through the forest. Then you will find a dried waterfall in Visapur Fort. In monsoon however this waterfall gushes water in its full glory. You will have to stick by this waterfall for the rest of the journey. Furthermore you will find a bifurcation after about 15 to 20 minutes. From that take the right trail that goes to the Visapur Fort. It is another 40 minutes walk on this trail before you can reach the entrance of the fort. In this route the Visapur Fort distance can be covered in about 2 hours.

With all forest trails with tall trees, temples, caves, and stairways the trek is ever exciting and entertaining. Moreover it is one of the trekking trails that even beginners can opt for. The level is not so tough but you will have to keep in mind the time duration too.

Visapur Scenery

I pondered in thought how awesome it is today and how much better would it be in its prime time. The royal decoration, chariots and horses. Troop movements and troop camp with Shivaji Raje himself standing. As from Visapur, one could get the entire view of Lohagad fort. As both forts are within striking distance, the British army captured Visapur and later also took over Lohagad fort. As i write my heart out and read-aloud – gives me goosebump. Thou summit to Visapur Fort is an excuse it will always call you again and again.

Trekking Route to Visapur summit

We start our trek with the Sun on our back and keeping Visapur fort to our left. There is a steep gradient uphill climb starting as soon as the trek path begins after a short walk. One can see the crumbled fortification of the fort to the left. A 45-minute climb should be sufficient. However, this is suited for experienced trekkers only. We continue our walk ahead, and a 30-minute gradual walk brings us to a village. We start our ascent to Visapur from here. A good paced walking, and we arrived at the entry to Visapur gates. Visapur is a vast fort it may take 2 hours to roam along the boundary walls.

VISAPUR FORT, VISAPUR TREK

Visapur fort is a hill fort located near Lonavala and is just a kilometre away from Lohgad. The height of the fort from sea level is 3,556 feet. Visapur is larger than it's twin fort Lohgad. If you like going for small treks, then a trek to Visapur is highly recommended. Please check below for more information about the fort and the trekking involved in getting to the top.

  • > Treks in Maharashtra

Located just besides Lohgad. A must visit even if you are just planning to visit Lohgad.

How would you rate this place on a scale of 1-5? Vote Below!

  • Winter Treks near Pune
  • Night Treks Near Pune

What to see on the fort:  Within the fort are caves, cisterns of water. These look super cool during the rainy season.

  • Hanuman Carving: There is a huge Hanuman carving on the fort which is a popular sightseeing spot. In addition to the carving, there are also a few temples dedicated to Hanuman.
  • Well on the fort: The locals say that the well is very old and was built by the Pandavas.
  • Iron Gun: There's a cannon gun on the fort which seems to be from the British Era.
  • Walls of the Fort: The walls of Visapur are still intact and give us an insight of the construction during the 16th century.

Route Information : If you start from pune on the old Pune Mumbai highway (NH4) take a left turn when you reach kamshet from the highway to pavanagar village.  Ask the locals if you are confused when to take that left turn, the same road will lead you to Lohgad fort base. Along the way you have awesome view of pavana dam and its backwaters. The road is not bad…..but could be difficult and dangerous in monsoon. There's a paid parking at Lohgad base where you can park your vehicles. From here, the base of Visapur is just 10mins away.

Difficulty Level and Other useful tips:  Difficulty level is Medium. It will take approximately 1 hour to reach to the top. For an experienced trekker it should take just 30 mins. During the dry season, the trek is considerably easy and safe. However, one needs to be careful during the rainy season as the trek gets kind of slippery.

Camping and Food : Visapur is not ideal for camping. There are no proper shelters where you can stay. It's particularly difficult during the monsoon season.

For food, there are plenty of stalls at the base of Lohgad from where you can buy Pakodas or traditional Indian snacks. These small stores also keep water bottles, chips, biscuits and other eatables.

  • Visapur Fort Trek is one of the most thrilling day treks that passes from different villages, trails, and a stunning waterfall. The picturesque Fort is located near the village of Visapur and was built as a twin fort to the famous Lohagad fort is of its kind experience for thrill-seekers and trek enthusiasts. This trek is a perfect escape away from the crowded cities into the wilderness and mountains that keep calling you again and again.

This trek is majorly conducted during Monsoons when there is greenery all around, the trees smell fresh, the cool breeze hits your face and clouds look like heaps of cotton candy it all together gives you a heavenly experience and refreshment which one needs to de-stress on weekends. A lot of people trek towards the fort on weekends, especially from Pune, Mumbai, and Lonavala due to its close accessibility. The Visapur Fort trek all takes about 2 hours from its base village trail to reach the summit for experienced trekkers.

It was Built in the year 1713-1720 CE by Balaji Peshwa, The first Peshwa of the Maratha Empire it was built much later than the famous Lohagad fort but at a hill much above the Lohagad Fort. This fort was not much accessed and hence till today it has some remains of the ancient architecture and Peshwa empire ruins that attract history buffs every year.

The fort has a huge carving of Lord Hanuman establishing that he was The Deity of the kingdom but the fort couldn't be intact since there were attacks on it by neighboring villages in order to expand their kingdom. The Britishers also attacked the Lohagad fort by placing cannons at the Visapur Fort thus conquering both the forts in 1800 AD. The fort is now taken care of by the Tourism Department of Maharashtra and remains a favorite trekking destination during the monsoons.

A content creator's aesthetic dream when it rains, the trek gives you a feeling of walking through the clouds and gives peace to the mind and soul. This twin fort can be accessed via three routes-one from Patan Village, one from Bhaje Caves, and the third one from Gaimukh Khind. The trails are all full of greenery during the monsoon and barren during the rest of the year. The route towards the fort gives you an idea about how powerful the Maratha Kingdom was because of the resources available at this height.

Visapur Fort Trek is a moderate elevation trek and is located at 3567ft. above sea level providing a spectacular view of its surroundings. It is suitable for beginners and gives you a great first-time experience. Accessible from Pune, Mumbai, and Lonavala easily via railways this fort is a history lover's window into the past era and one can easily imagine the grandeur it must have during the Maratha Empire's reign. • Like most people trekking to this fort, the best part is to walk via lush green forests to reach this preserved treasure of ancient history.
  • The Bhaje Buddhist Caves are a piece of art and are worth exploring since they are on the way to the Summit. By climbing around 200 steps you can reach into these 22 rock-cut caves that date back to the 2nd century BC.
  • The remains of the old Mahadev Temple serve as a window into the rich history of the Maratha and how they worshipped Lord Shiva and followed his preaching.
  • There is a vast horse-driven flour mill with its grinding stone still in place reminding us of how many people lived in this kingdom indicating the amount of food required to be ground.
  • The magnificent Lohagad fort conquered by The Great Chhatrapati Maharaj Shivaji but was given during a treaty is a massive structure and can be visited via a small detour on the same path.
  • While climbing Visapur Trek one can see the Pawna Lake and Dam and upon reaching the top a beautiful view of the sun is all one needs to relax after this hectic trek. Availability of Food and Water: Since it is a small village fort there are simple Maharashtrian dishes like Misal Pav, Vada Pav, and Puri-Bhaji available only till Bhaje Village. After that, it is a mountainous trek and hence no food is available. There are no resources for water and hence you have to carry your own 2 Litre water bottle.

There are daily trains from Pune, Lonavala, and Mumbai stations to reach Malvali. This is the easiest and safest way to reach the fort and is opted for by most trekkers. The nearest major train station is Lonavala and one can also travel from there.
  • By Road: Its proximity to the Mumbai-Pune highway makes it easily reachable from Paud via Kolvan and Dudhiware Khind. Those who want to enjoy a long drive on their two-wheelers or four-wheelers can also reach here via their vehicle which is an easy-to-find route. It takes about 1.5-2 hours to reach Visapur fort from Pune and 2-2.5 hours from Mumbai via major highways.
  • By Air: For trek enthusiasts willing to travel from different cities to this unique waterfall trek the nearest airport is Pune airport and you can hire a personal taxi or vehicle from Pune. It takes about the same time to reach as via road from Pune. The proposed nearest airport will be Navi Mumbai International airport in the coming future. With the ease to travel and easy accessibility, this trek is not worth missing.

Visapur Fort is located in the Pune district of Maharashtra. Attaining a height of 1,084m, this historic fortress was built during the late 1713-1720s. Steeped in history and some of the glorious tales of the past, this historic fort was built by the first Peshwa of the valorous Maratha Empire. But was later conquered by the British in 1818. Visapur Fort is larger and at a higher elevation than its twin fort- Lohagad. These two roofless buildings surrounded by outer or veranda walls said to have once been Government offices. There is a well which local legend says was built by the Pandavas. In 1885, near the north wall there was an iron gun ten feet long and of four-inch bore, marked with the

Tudor Rose and Crown, flanked by the letters E. R. This is probably a gun of Queen Elizabeth’s reign probably taken as bounty from an English ship and presented to the Peshwa Khanoji Angre or some other commander of the Maratha navy. Like other guns on the fort, it has been disabled by breaking off its trunnions. Close to it are the remains of an old Mahadev shrine.

Who Should Attend ?

Everyone can enjoy the Visapur fort trek in monsoons as there is water gushing through the steps while you trek. After the 30-40mins trail, there is a plateau covered with lush greenery. You can also spot Lohagad, Tikona, and Tung Forts, and the expressway.

Best suited for groups, solo trekkers, corporates, couples, and families.
