ASSC Responds to Discontinuation of VisitScotland Quality Assurance Scheme
“In an increasingly digital world, consumer behaviour and the needs of businesses have changed, particularly since the pandemic. We must adapt to this new landscape, alongside a challenging economic climate, and ensure we invest in the activities which will generate sustainable growth in the visitor economy. To do this, we’re changing the way we provide advice to businesses, moving to a digital-first, but not digital only approach.
“We’ll focus on delivering a programme of business advice which will inspire quality in the tourism industry and ensure businesses get the latest information on market insights and trends. It will ensure we have maximum reach and can also signpost to the wider support services and products of our national business support partners, with the ability to provide one-to-one support when it’s needed most.
“Engaging with stakeholders, including industry and local authorities, will be important as we further develop our business advice programme. This will ensure it meets the needs of businesses and helps the industry to be more sustainable and profitable.” Malcolm Roughead OBE, Chief Executive, VisitScotland
Fiona Campbell, CEO of the ASSC, said:
“The ASSC was informed that the Quality Assurance scheme is to be discontinued by VisitScotland’s CEO Malcolm Roughead some months ago, and after extensive consultation.
We recognise that many will have concerns about this development as the scheme had the trust of businesses and visitors alike for many years.
However, Visit Scotland will continue to offer advice and support, but change the way they are doing so via a digital first approach.
The decision underlines the importance of membership of the ASSC, which evidences a commitment to our Core Principles: quality, integrity, cleanliness, comfort, courtesy and efficiency.
The ASSC will continue to work closely with VisitScotland to develop support mechanisms for our members in the coming months and years.”
What does this mean for the QA scheme?
VisitScotland will manage a transition period to retire the QA schemes and deliver a free-to-access business advice programme.
Instead of assuring a business at a single point in time, they will focus on the delivery of information and insight to help businesses develop the visitor experience and respond to the changing needs of visitors.
The QA Schemes include:
- Quality Assurance star grading
- Taste Our Best
- Welcome Schemes
- iKnow Partner Programme

Star-Grading System Will Put Nam on Par with All Countries
![visit scotland grading scheme](https://neweralive.na/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/top-90x728-website-scaled.jpg)
By Wezi Tjaronda WINDHOEK The Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) has embarked on a New Tourist Accommodation Star-Grading System. This new grading will enable Namibia to be on par with other countries worldwide. At the moment, the industry is using a system that was implemented in 1974, which covers rest camps, hotels and guest farms only. The new system will not only shake up the industry in a way that it will differentiate the service delivery between different establishments, but will also help inform tourists on where they might want to go. The current situation has led some establishments to market themselves in a way that misleads tourists. Beginning June 2008, the board expects the new system – which will be a legislative instrument – to be in place in time for the World Cup, when more international tourists are expected to flock to Namibia. Digu //Naobeb, NTB’s Acting Chief Executive Officer and Strategic Executive: Industry Services, said last week that tourism was a highly competitive industry and the Namibian sector could not afford to compete only on the basis of uniqueness or being a niche destination alone. A quality assurance rating provides an independent assessment of what a guest can expect to find and gives a guarantee that a guest’s stay will meet their expectations. The new system will cover a variety of establishments except campsites, camping and caravan parks, and backpacker hostels because they cater for a different market segment and will be taken care of under a different scheme. The new scheme is meant to improve the quality of tourism accommodation in Namibia, assist consumers and operators in making informed selection decisions and also make life easier for tourism accommodation facilities to sell their products. The grading will look at the quality and condition of available facilities and not necessarily take into consideration the size of the establishment. “Thus an establishment will not be penalized for not having a specific facility but will be graded on its offered facilities. As establishments will not be penalized on the size of the room, it will rather be graded on the room’s functionality no matter the size,” said //Naobeb. Benefits of the scheme, which is voluntary, include appearance in NTB’s publications and website, provision of business advice and benchmark information while being allowed to use any reference to standard and grading in their own marketing material. Although the benefits are essential to ensure accommodation establishments buy in, //Naobeb cited usage of the scheme by customers as the most important benefit. NTB has partnered with ‘Visit Scotland’ to finalize the scheme. ‘Visit Scotland’s’ assistance focused on the validation of draft-grading criteria and training of tourism inspectors. Over 30 establishments in Karas, Khomas, Otjozondjupa, Oshana, Kunene and Erongo regions were covered. Findings from some establishments in these regions indicate that they could make it to 5-star grades, but their customer service was poor. //Naobeb said this was a clear indication that establishment owners are investing heavily in improving physical aspects of the facilities, and not in human capital. Robert Flavell, one of the senior quality advisers of ‘Visit Scotland’, said there was a desire among establishments to have the quality system implemented as soon as possible. Six countries – Australia, Germany, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa and Wales – were used in the benchmarking exercise.

The Quality Grading Scheme for Visitor Experiences offers tourism operators a chance to be awarded with a one to five star rating to indicate the level of quality a visitor can experience when visiting their attraction or activity. Participating in the scheme assists operators to maintain and continually improve the quality of their offering. The star award is an independent mark of quality and tourism businesses displaying a Tourism NI quality star rating have been officially quality assessed by Tourism NI.
![visit scotland grading scheme](https://www.tourismni.com/globalassets/business-development/support-by-sector/activities--attractions/mount-ida-pottery-handmade-to-last-banbridge.jpg?width=737&quality=80)
How the scheme works
To achieve a star rating, tourism operators choose to be subject to an annual incognito assessment from an experienced Quality Advisor who will undergo the customer journey.
Following the visit, verbal feedback will be offered to the owner, manager or appropriate staff member and a full report and score sheet will be provided in writing where the star award will be advised.
Quality Advisors undertake a rigorous training programme. Assessments are objective and draw on extensive experience of the visitor attraction and activity sector.
Who is eligible?
The Visitor Experience Quality Grading Scheme is open to tourism businesses that offer a quality visitor experience to tourists. This includes, but not exclusively, museums, castles, historic houses, tours, art venues, wildlife experiences, gardens and garden centres.
Benefits for visitor attraction operators of being quality graded
- Access to one-to-one advice from a team of experienced Quality Advisors.
- Provision of a written report highlighting the strengths and weaknesses and suggestions for improvements
- Priority display on Tourism NI's consumer website www.discovernorthernireland.com
- Reassurance to potential visitors from a recognised and official organisation
A Mark of Distinction
Ve mark of distinction booklet, belleek pottery case study.
Belleek Pottery is currently one of seven 4 Star Visitor Experiences in County Fermanagh.
In this short video, Patricia McCauley, Visitor Centre Manager at Belleek Pottery, talks briefly about their experience and journey through Tourism NI’s Quality Grading Scheme for Visitor Experiences.
About the assessment
Incognito visits are carried out every year and are undertaken by one Quality Advisor. However, in the event that Tourism NI in its absolute discretion deems it necessary, assessments (whether incognito or not) may be carried out by more than one person.
The Quality Advisor will visit the Experience without prior notice to sample an authentic customer journey. While at the Experience, verbal feedback will be offered to the owner, manager or other appropriate staff member. Following the visit a full written report will be prepared and the award will be advised in writing. There are six key areas of assessment. These include Pre-Arrival and Arrival, which are assessed for all Experiences, followed by Attraction/Presentation and a further three areas: Catering, Retail and Toilets which are included in the assessment if they form part of the visitor experience. Where an Experience does not include these facilities, they are not included in the calculation of the award and have no impact on the result. The assessment of the visitor experience specific to each Experience is tailored to reflect the nature of the designator.
Quality Advisors undertake a rigorous training programme. Assessments are objective and draw on extensive experience of the visitor attraction sector.
The annual subscription fee for operators on Tourism NI’s Visitor Experience Quality Grading Scheme is £150 (including VAT.)

Cincinnati Reds MLB Draft grades: Everything to know about the Reds' 2024 draft picks
By zach pressnell | jul 14, 2024.
![Cincinnati Reds Introduce David Bell Cincinnati Reds Introduce David Bell](https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/c_crop,w_3888,h_2187,x_0,y_0/c_fill,w_720,ar_16:9,f_auto,q_auto,g_auto/images/GettyImages/mmsport/229/01j2sp1a1j7qar8ebq4f.jpg)
The 2024 MLB Draft is officially here, and the Cincinnati Reds are in a position to add to their loaded farm system. After a fortunate turn of events in the draft lottery, Cincinnati landed the second overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft.
Cincinnati's farm system has become a bit depleted over the last few seasons due to many of their top prospects graduating from prospect status at the same time. This has led to a young, exciting Cincinnati Reds team that still has a farm system with four top 100 prospects behind them.
Everything to know about the Reds draft
With the Reds striking gold in the lottery, they should have their choice among the top talent in the draft, besides whoever Cleveland lands on with the first overall pick. They will be looking to add a college player to fast track to the big leagues.
FanSided's Roger Castillo predicts that the Reds will select Charlie Condon , a third baseman and outfielder, from the University of Georgia with the No. 2 selection. Condon fits a position of need, likely playing corner outfield if selected by the Reds, while being placed on a fast track to the big leagues.
Beyond Condon, there are multiple names that the Reds could land on. One of the most likely options, if available, is the middle infielder from Oregon State, Travis Bazzana. Bazzana is a legit five tool prospect that could end up cracking the big leagues by opening day next year.
Chase Burns and Jac Caglianone are two other names to follow with this pick. Burns has an explosive, triple-digit arm with a wipeout slider to pair along with it. Caglianone is a 30-homer threat that also can touch 100 MPH from the left side on the mound. He likely won't stick as a pitcher, but that's always an option for him.
Reds MLB Draft grades: Who did the Reds select in the 2024 MLB Draft?
On Day One of the MLB Draft, the Reds hold the No. 2, 51, and 71 overall picks.
Round 1, Pick 2: Reds select RHP Chase Burns, Wake Forest University
With the second pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, the Cincinnati Reds select Chase Burns, a right-handed pitcher from Wake Forest University.
Burns is the best pitcher in the draft and he's going to be one of the most electric arms in the entire minor leagues. His fastball routinely runs up over 100 mph and he can hold that velocity through 100 pitches. His slider is an even better pitch, grading as a 70-grade offering on MLB Pipeline's 20-80 grade scale.
The righty brings energy, work ethic, and a competitive fire that can't be taught. His tools go far beyond just his impressive four-pitch arsenal.
Burns doesn't fill an immediate need for the Reds like Charlie Condon would have, but Burns' potential is through the roof. There's a world where he cracks the big leagues early next season due to his dominant fastball, slider combination.
Round 2, Pick 51: Reds select SS Tyson Lewis, Millard West High School (NE)
With the 51st pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, the Cincinnati Reds selected 18 year old short stop Tyson Lewis out of Millard West High School in Nebraska.
Lewis, the reigning Nebraska Prep Player of the Year, slashed 496/.579/.912 with 8 home runs, 7 triples, and 14 doubles in 2024. He's an above average runner with a 60 yard dash time in the 6.40 second range. Lewis has shown good pop as well, registering exit velocities north of 108 MPH.
Ranked 39th in the draft according to MLB Pipeline , falling to the Reds at 51 is a steal. Cincinnati has their hands full in developing him, but he has all the raw tools to be an everyday big leaguer one day.
The Reds have made their plan obvious over the last few seasons as they have acquired a ton of shortstops, both through the draft and through trades. Lewis' athleticism should allow him to be moved around defensively in the future, providing him and the Reds with defensive flexibility as he grows and matures.
Comp Balance B, Pick 71: Reds select RHP Luke Holman, Louisiana State University
With the 71st pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, the Cincinnati Reds selected right-handed pitcher Luke Holman from LSU.
Holman, 21, was rated as MLB Pipeline's 45th best prospect heading into the draft and Cincinnati was able to grab him at 71.
The LSU product put together quite an impressive junior season, where he was selected as an All-American after posting a 2,75 ERA across 16 starts and 91.2 innings. He struck out 12.5 hitters per nine innings and allowed just 5.6 hits per nine.
He's a tall, lanky right hander with a fastball in the low to mid-nineties. He complements that with a curveball, changeup and a wipeout slider. His fastball and slider command may be his best trait as he's able to pound the zone with both offerings, expanding as he gets ahead of hitters.
Cincinnati adds to their loaded farm system with a second pitcher in three picks.

BOSTON -- A Red Sox farm system that is already loaded with premium talent on the position-player side added another big piece on Sunday night with the selection of switch-hitting outfielder Braden Montgomery with the 12th pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. Boston also selected TCU left-hander Payton Tolle with its No. 50 pick.
• Get to know No. 12 Draft pick Braden Montgomery
Montgomery, a Texas A&M product, sustained a broken right ankle while playing in the NCAA Super Regional against Oregon, and that might be the reason he slipped to the Red Sox. Montgomery was the No. 8 prospect heading into the Draft, per MLB Pipeline.

Evidence of that injury was on full display Sunday night, as Montgomery, who was at Draft headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas, rode around on a knee scooter while wearing a white Red Sox jersey.
But that didn’t slow him down, as he bounced around the Cowtown Coliseum with excitement after being picked by an organization with the rich history of the Red Sox.
“It was joy,” Montgomery said. “To be picked by anybody today means a lot to me and my family. For it to be the Red Sox means a whole lot, so I’m excited to get to work.”
• Red Sox first-rounder wants to 'spread love' for baseball
Boston’s amateur scouting department felt similar joy that he was still on the board at No. 12.
“There's always surprises in the Draft and the way it works in baseball, and we were really excited that he was there for us and happy we were able to make it work,” said Red Sox director of amateur scouting Devin Pearson. “And we just couldn't be more fired up to bring him into the organization.”
The Red Sox tracked Montgomery going back to his days at Madison Central High School in Mississippi, with area scout Danny Watkins leading the charge then.
“We were enamored by him then, and then got to follow his career to Stanford and [then Texas A&M],” said Pearson. “He had a huge year in the SEC, and we believe he has even more development left. His skill set fits perfectly into what we are trying to do here.”
And what are the strong points of that skill set?
“We see a really athletic outfielder with the ability to drive the ball out of the ballpark from both sides,” said Pearson. “Elite swing decisions and a guy that really fits our development philosophies, and with a chance to continue to develop with all the things that we do at the Minor League level.”
In a Zoom call with reporters, Montgomery left no doubt what type of energy he brings to a baseball field and a clubhouse.
“They’re getting a winner that impacts everyone around them,” Montgomery said. “I like to be loud, with high energy and good vibes. I like to have fun. No one wants to be somewhere when people are dragging around and not enjoying themselves. I’m a winner and I’m going to create a winning culture wherever I’m at.”
As for the ankle that robbed Montgomery a chance to go to the College World Series Final with his teammates -- they wound up losing to Tennessee -- he doesn’t foresee it as an issue going forward.
“Yeah, I'm feeling great,” Montgomery said. “I'm honestly a little bit ahead of schedule in terms of bone growth. They’ve seen some bone growth where that break was. There’s no pain. Everything is just normal in there.”
The Red Sox will have their medical staff take a closer look at Montgomery before deciding for sure if he will play at some point this season.
“I think it’ll be part of a bigger conversation,” Pearson said. “We certainly won't rush him back. We'll get him on site in Fort Myers [Fla.] with our medical staff and kind of figure out what the best plan is for him. But I'm happy to hear he's ready to get rolling, for sure.”

While Montgomery mainly played right field at Texas A&M, Pearson said the Sox will try him all over the outfield to see what his best spot is.
The various ways Montgomery can impact a game should become evident as soon as he signs and gets sent to a Minor League affiliate.
How does Montgomery describe his playing style?
“I’d say it’s dynamic,” said Montgomery. “It’s impactful. What whatever I'm doing, I'm impacting the game and I’m going to help us win. I’m not letting guys take extra bases in the outfield, and then I'm hitting homers.”
Red Sox add pitcher in second round
With their second pick (No. 50 overall) on Day 1, the Sox took Tolle, the lanky TCU lefty who adds a lot of intrigue with his 6-6, 250-pound frame.
“The unique traits for him are just the far-above-average extension, his ability to throw strikes, his ability to spin the slider,” said Pearson. “He does a lot of things that we can work with and get to his optimal shapes. Mainly it’s the extension and how his fastball moves.”
