Queen Mary and King Frederik forced to cancel part of upcoming royal tour

Queen Mary and King Frederik have been forced to cancel part of their upcoming royal tour .

The two-day visit to the Faroe Islands was in the royal diary for next week but has had to be postponed due to strike action.

Their Majesties were due to stop there during the first part of their planned Commonwealth tour but five major workers' unions have gone on strike since May 14.

The Danish royal household announced the change to the itinerary on Wednesday, saying they hope to make the trip later this year but no new date has been set as yet.

"The royal couple express their full understanding of the decision the Faroese layman has made," the statement said, suggesting it was Faroe Islands Prime Minister Aksel V Johannesen's decision.

"Their Majesties look forward to carrying out the planned program at a later date."

The news came as members of the Danish royal family marked the 175th anniversary of Constitution Day - a day celebrating Danish parliament's first constitution.

King Frederik along with Queen Mary, Queen Margrethe and Princess Benedikte attended a service at Holmens Church, in Copenhagen, on Wednesday morning.

Australian-born royal Mary, looked striking in a vibrant pink dress by Andrew Gn, which she paired with Prada heels and an oversized Susanne Juul hat.

Queen Mary shared a laugh with her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe, when the duo realised their hats were too big to greet each other with kisses on the cheek as they usually do.

This prompted Mary to blow kisses to Margrethe and her sister Benedikte.

The interaction even drew a cheeky grin from King Frederik as he walked on ahead.

Later on Wednesday evening the royal will gather again to celebrate the big anniversary with an official recpetion in the former upper chamber at Christiansborg.
