Strongly considering 2022 EV purchase for 100mi r/t commute... opinions/advice?

  • Add to quote

There's a high chance that I'm going to be getting a job offer soon that will let us move close to family, but will entail a roughly 100 mile round-trip commute 4 days/week (no WFH option). I don't think my 2003 Focus is going to hold up very long under that, and an EV makes a compelling case from a total ownership cost and convenience factor (no need to stop at sketchy gas stations before dawn twice a week). The 2022 Bolt is the top candidate at this time. The plan is to drive that Focus until we're settled in a new house and our van is paid off (late this year). At that point, I think I'd be ready to purchase. However, I wanted to get some opinions from those with Bolt experience; I've worked in engineering long enough to know that theory, specs, and sales brochures don't always reflect reality. With that said, any input on the following? 1. Is a 100 mile round trip feasible, assuming an L2 charger at home but no charging methods available at work or on the way? Job is in the Atlanta area, so hot conditions in the summer afternoons and cold (20s-30s) overnight in the middle of winter. I know that's not cold to some of you but I've lived south of I-20 almost my whole life, and right now I'm in Savannah... Drive is 75-85% interstate, but that could by anything from smooth and fast to stop-and-go. 2. Is L2 charging feasible at home if I can't park in the garage? I'll have a driveway but the garage is going to be a workshop, at least for a while. 3. I have seen reference to buying an extra wheel/tire and storing it under the false floor in the trunk. Anyone know if the 2022 has room for this? I WILL have a spare; bought one for a past car that didn't have one and it saved my bacon one day (back road at 0500; ripped a sidewall open). 4. Is there a compelling advantage to the 2022 over a 2020 or 2021? I'll be driving the snot out it so resale/depreciation isn't really a concern. 5. Any other general thought/suggestions/opinions? Thanks!

100 mile round trip commute

1. No problem, pre-COVID my commute was 130 miles RT in CO. Even in the coldest winter months, I typically had at least 50 miles of range remaining on the GOM. 2. L2 is feasible, either install the outlet just inside the garage and hang the EVSE near the entrance and run the cord under the garage door, or mount it outside. Many EVSE hold up well outside, take a look at Grizzl-e. 3. It is tight, some have done it. I haven't needed one in many years. 4. Price (maybe). Also Adaptive Cruise may be available, and if you step up to EUV, you can get Super Cruise. 5. Go for it, 3+ years and no regrets here.

100 mile round trip commute

100 miles round trip is easy with L2 charging at home. Cold temps hit range far worse than hot, but even in cold places 100 miles RT is no problem. It is definitely feasible to mount a L2 EVSE (charging station) outside, and many (most?) are rated for this. If you pay attention to cable length and location when you are planning for it, it won’t be an issue. I’ll leave comments on spare tires to others, I don’t personally know. The 2022 is a design update but fundamentally pretty much the same car as the 2020/2021 models. Comes down to what look you prefer and whether any of the new features/options (e.g. adaptive cruise, Super Cruise on the EUV
) are compelling to you.

Any new or used Bolt should handle 100-mile-RT in GA with no sweat. Most L2 ESVEs have a long cord. Unit inside the garage, car outside the door is no problem. jack vines

100 mile round trip commute

Technically, anyone driving in GA will sweat, EV or non-EV. LOL!

1. 100 RT is easy - especially with a 2020+. I do 130 RT in a 2019 at 90% at highway speeds and I'm fine year round (with 15-20 miles leftover in the winter). The 2020s+ also have 20 miles more than I do so you'll be just fine. Theoretically you'll actually get even more range in stop/go vs. 75mph unless you're stuck and blasting the heat for an hour. 2. It's much easier in the garage. I've had to snake the cord out a couple of times to park on the driveway and it's just a pain. So if that's your situation, I'd recommend installing the EVSE outside instead. 3. I've gone close to 100k now without a spare. I've had two slow leaks, one eventually fixed itself with the self seal but I also have an inflator and a plug kit. Worst case, I have AAA. 4. If you're planning to drive it to the ground, I'd just pick up the cheapest you can find - which would probably be a 2020/2021. You could get a EUV for Super Cruise but you'd sacrifice some range - and I'd grab a M3 at that price point anyways (with a heat pump, autopilot, and more range). 5. Quoting ARob "Go for it, 3+ years and no regrets here." I have close to 100k after 3 years and I've only had to do three things - replace cracked windshields, replace cabin filter, and rotate tires. EVs - especially the Bolt/M3 are perfect for our situations.

Do it man! Im getting my 2017 end of month and will be doing 130 RT with free charging at work

1. 100 mile RT is no problem in the ATL area. Not that you'll need it for your commute, but you should get the plugshare app so you can see all the L2 and L3 charging options in your area. 3. I've driven a car for the past 20 years with no spare. I carry a tire plug kit, a pair of pliers, and a small 12V compressor. I've used it once or twice over 20 years, no problems. You might want to get a scissor jack and a lug wrench. And, get a 10mm wrench so you can disconnect the negative terminal of he 12V battery for the rare (very rare) occasion when the home+FF button doesn't work to reset the system. By the way, you can ride for free in the toll lane on some sections of I-85 (I think I-85 north out of ATL, but you should check with Peach Pass). You'll have to get a Georgia EV tag for your car to do this.

Thanks for the input, all. On the spare--I am a construction debris magnet, and almost every car I've ever purchased has gotten a flat within a couple weeks. They've always happened at times and places where roadside assistance is unavailable, or at least would be a long time in coming. I have a list of standard things I put in/on all of my cars--lug wrench, basic tool kit (basic socket set, wrenches, screwdrivers), good sunshade, trailer hitch, small trauma kit, flashlight, air compressor, tire plug kit, water bottles, etc. And a spare, if there isn't one already.

Things I've bought for my new Bolt

One guy on youtube managed to fit a spare tire in the Bolt but had to Deflate the tire to make it fit. I would just go with a tire repair kit a pump.

You do not need a special charger if you have or can convert a circuit to 240V. Use an adapter to the factory cable. We do it from our garage for two Bolts. Even in freezing weather, when a full charge can be 150 miles, you are fine.

The OEM charger is capable of charging at 240V x 12A (search the forum for more info about the adapters you'll need), so it can add about 10 or 11 miles of range per hour of charging. For 100 miles a day, that's about 10 hours of charging, 15-ish in the winter. It's doable in the summer, may not be enough in the winter.

100 mile round trip commute

1. 100mi is easy. I commute 122mi in upstate NY. Cold is worse for range than heat. 2. Yes, just get a UL rated EVSE for outdoor use. 3. I bought a Chevy Cruze spare tire from a junkyard. Only use it on the back wheels. Fits under the false floor in my Premier. 4. Make sure it has CCS charging and a bigger battery is always better. 60kwh vs 66kwh 5. I really enjoy not having to stop for gas or do oil changes on my long commute.

I bought a "spare tire kit" off eBay; it has a compact spare, jack, and lug wrench. The tire fits under the false floor with ease, and the jack & lug wrench fit in the provided spots in the foam thingy in the basement. I also bought the portable compressor from Chevy, but aftermarket units are cheaper. Interestingly, I've had more flats with the Bolt in 4 years than in the previous 20+ years of driving.

Ask yourself how difficult the commute will be. If it's stop and go, heavy traffic, you might do better with a Tesla which can self-drive in rush hour traffic. You will arrive at your destination fresh and rested. I don't believe the Bolt even has adaptive speed control. Otherwise, a Bolt will be fine....

100 mile round trip commute

One year plus of owner ship with a 2020 Bolt and it's the best car I ever had, and favorite I've ever owned. Get the Bolt with everything.

100 mile round trip commute

Agree with @shrox best car I've had. Had a 2013 Volt before and it has been amazing and very reliable. The Bolt is absolutely no trouble. If you are moving to the Atlanta area look at Donohoo Chevrolet in Fort Payne Alabama. They have some of the best haggle free deals around. At first thought their adds on CarGurus were suspect but they are the real deal. Local dealers in Birmingham were laughably bad, I mean really bad! Some folks are serious about selling the Bolt (Donohoo) and others just don't care! Bought my Bolt in January and was nervous about driving it the 100 miles back home in "cold" temperatures. It was 52 I think and made it with just under half a battery left after 100 miles at 70 to 72 MPH. I had not read the manual and got a good walkthru one controls but forgot half of it so have no idea where the heat was set - it was not off and I was comfortable. I bought my Bolt because it was cheap - I did get the Premier and because we have a GM card which was almost maxed out and they gave an additional $3,000 in earnings I was out the door for just over $21,000. At those prices I'll buy it but it's half of a base Model 3 which I'm not going to spend $40,000 plus on. Bolt is fun sporty car to drive. It is a car I just get in and drive. I have the Driver confidence package which is nice. Easy enough to get it excited and flashing red dots on the windscreen telling me to slow down there is a slower vehicle in front of me. One time I had looked to the side and it went off just as I was looking back ahead. More than enough time to slow without it being close to a panic stop. A good safety feature along with the pedestrian braking system. Have't had it go off but it always "sees" people waling on sidewalk and does not false alarm. When I pick up my grandkids from elementary school I turn on the front camera (like backup camera but in front of the car) as I go thru the line just to have the additional information in case a kid drops something that they will lunge to get.

100 mile round trip commute

Agree with others - 100 miles is a non-issue. But why are you bothering with the EUV (I assume you're asking about the EUV, since you posted in the EUV forum)? Unless rear seat legroom is a really big deal, get the regular Bolt EV. Better range, same size hatch, lower price...

Totally doable but if your power is out over night you might struggle to make it to work in the morning in the middle of winter. My L2 charger is on the wall of the garage opposite the doors and I park on the far side of my driveway because of the recall. With a JLONG J1772 extension it's a non issue.

My 100-mile roundtrip daily commute to work

  • Add to quote

I placed my order a few weeks ago in NJ and have been watching this site and Volt news closely. Here is one thing that confuses me: why is there not more said about the benefit of a longer-than-50-mile commute in a Volt? Taking into consideration some real world test drives I've read about, the Volt should average about 70 MPG on my 100-mile round trip daily commute to work (approx 40 - 50 miles on battery and mid-30s MPG on extended thereafter). But all of the focus seems to be on sub-50 mile commutes. Is there a danger or inefficiency or detriment to the car I am not seeing/considering on these longer commutes? I would greatly appreciate any feedback/thoughts, as well as comments from anyone else who expects to use the Volt for longer daily commutes. Thanks!

I think it boils down to the fact that people misinterprit the MPG figures, no matter the range. I saw this in the comments of the recent CNN article about the Volt. People just assume the 35-40mpg figure and say things like "car x gets better mileage, so whats the point". They don't take the battery range into account, or don't care.

100 mile round trip commute

ps, I can relate as I have a 74 mile round trip with (probably ) no charge point at the turnaround. If you are satisfied w/ 70 MPG then that's what counts. Besides from all the test drives I've read so far the car is really top notch from a fit and finish, interior, noise, ride and handling point of view. We have a fair number of guys here that are giving up their BMW's and Mercedes for the Volt. That speaks a lot about the "class" of the Volt!!-GSB

Thanks for the feedback so far, guys. I'm glad I'm not the only one mystified by the lack of awareness. And by the way, George, I'm giving up and Infiniti.

120 mile round trip commute

I will be having a 120 mile round trip commute for the next 4 years. Currently I have a 100 mile commute... 85% highway. Early hours. Ive had a 2010 insight. Sold it before there summer.. 170k, battery at 45%, highway mileage at 34, (compared to 46 when new) went through 1 transmission, started burning oil after 150k. commute is on NJ turnpike at 75MPH... no, i won't slow down! (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); What would you buy? prius? civic? cruze diesel? VW? give me some ideas! Im sure I can get a great deal on a 15 prius with the new 16 coming out. winter driving not a big deal, I have my truck for the really bad weather. but my insight handled 6 inches of snow with no issues. Le me know what you think.. Thanks in advance..

Well, you're asking in a biased forum of course. Why wouldn't we recommend a Prius? I have a 140 mile round trip commute 5 days a week, and this is my second Prius running that route. The car can't be beat for MPG and reasonable maintenance costs. Take good care of it and it will take good care of you. There are other posts in the forum about handling in snow and it appears to do well. Snow tires will help. Can't speak to that personally since the only snow I ever see is on the mountains or maybe a flurry now and then.

Of all the cars you mentioned, Prius on average will last the longest with the fewest repairs, however when you get past 100k and things start to go wrong it can get expensive. If it were me I would get a Camry Hybrid, or an Avalon Hybrid, because comfort and speed sometimes trumps top gas mileage.

Man, 120 mi commute is gold for a Prius. Yes, it won't get its top mileage at 75, but it will still get much better mileage than any other car. You would "get your moneys worth" out of it! Of course, if the oil companies have to start paying US to take their fuel, maybe not. I doubt very much you would find "things starting to go wrong" past 100k, but who knows? It is a Toyota, and the second most reliable one!

Crunch the numbers for a 120 mile commute. When gas was $4/gallon I paid list price for a Prius. At current gas prices, $1.89/gallon, I could not justify the $4000 premium over cars that get less mpg. Unless you lust over hybrid technology, the numbers likely point to something else. Then again I doubt anyone's currently paying list price on a Prius. The big plus for a hybrid with those commute miles is near zero brake wear. Non-hybrids will be at a disadvantage.

Thats why I ask. I was at the local dealer, they still have about 15 in stock. So far, on a prius 2, they're down to 21,200. I know they can do better, especially with the 2016 coming out in a few weeks. 0% financing is nice as well. Drove the cruze diesel as well. Very nice car, lots of torque, interior awesome. Seats are awesome, car is really quiet. highway mileage is great, once I get into the city it drops. How are the seats for long commutes in the prius? I noticed they have no lumbar support...

I find the seats in the Prius more comfortable than the Cruz. I have rented several cars for an 1100 mile trip to pick up/ drop off one of my children in college and that the Cruz seats are not as good. Just my opinion, though.

100 mile round trip commute

‘A new breed of commuter’: This North Carolina woman ‘super commutes’ 500 miles to work every other week to save $2K/month — what’s driving this emerging trend

Oh, the extremes folks will go to keep the Big Apple from taking a big bite out of their bank accounts.

Take hairstylist Kaitlin Jorgenson of Brooklyn. Well, once of Brooklyn.

  • These 5 magic money moves will boost you up America's net worth ladder in 2024 — and you can complete each step within minutes. Here's how
  • 'You didn't want to risk it': 80-year-old woman from South Carolina is looking for the safest place for her family's $250,000 savings. Here's Dave Ramsey's response
  • Car insurance premiums in America are through the roof — and only getting worse. But 5 minutes could have you paying as little as $29/month

Yes, Jorgenson still working her same job at the Scott J. Aveda Hair Salon in the Upper West Side. But now she commutes in from North Carolina and she brings her social media followers along on her days .

For a year now, Jorgensen has made the 544-mile round trip from Charlotte to her NYC job, commuting by plane to and from LaGuardia airport every other week. As super commutes go for someone who isn’t a corporate executive, it may qualify for one of the longest in the U.S.

“I feel like I’m the happiest I’ve ever been,” Jorgensen told CNBC’s Make It. Yes, but we wouldn’t blame you if you questioned the practicality of it all, let alone the sanity. Regardless, it’s one fascinating case to examine for breaking down the pros and cons.

Pros of a super commute, close up

While the geographic expanse of a Charlotte-to-New York flight could easily overwhelm Joe or Jane Commuter, the truth is that, under certain circumstances, it can actually save time.

For example: Any Chicago denizen will tell you that driving from the city’s northern to southern border via the main thoroughfare of Western Avenue can easily take two hours. But flying from O’Hare airport to LaGuardia? Nonstop, it’s 2 hours, 10 minutes.

In Jorgensen’s case, runaway expenses were also a major consideration. The cost-benefit analysis isn’t hard to grasp: flights, Ubers, parking her car at the Charlotte airport and crash privileges at a friend’s NYC apartment run about $1,000 a month. Add another $1,000 to rent in Charlotte, and as Jorgensen shared with one of her followers, she’s still paying half the $4,000 she paid to live in Brooklyn. (And racking up the frequent flyer miles, too.)

Like many who relocated during the pandemic, Jorgensen enjoys living in a bucolic locale far from big-city headaches. And trends in cities such as San Francisco may correlate to the rise of aerial super commutes, as in 2022 100 people moved out for every 63 people who moved in, according to analysis by Move Buddha .

Commuting cons over the long haul

But it doesn’t mean by a longshot that super commuting is a no-brainer. If you miss a bus or train in New York City, another one comes in five or 10 minutes. Miss a flight, though — or have it cancel on you — and you’ve gone from super commute to super calamity. A train from Charlotte to New York’s Moynahan Station typically takes 12 or 13 hours.

You’ll also need a boss of the most understanding order to agree to a super commuting arrangement. Calling in late from an airport terminal halfway across the country isn’t exactly good form and filling in last minute for your sick co-worker approaches a near impossibility.

The super commute also takes on a different tenor if you make the haul by car. Gas, tolls, and wear and tear on the car add up. And depending on your route, the aggravations of fighting traffic, dealing with construction backups, or waiting out accidents could increase — a physically and mentally draining proposition. A pre-pandemic study contended that sedentary commuting was a chronic activity “with the potential for stress and a time use that can compete with other health-promoting activities.”

This is also not a tactic for workers in a small town who suspect that their big-city business is in trouble. One study concludes that if the business falters, workers in larger markets are unemployed for much shorter stints and lose less income than those in smaller markets.

The ‘hybrid’ super commute?

As a stylist, Jorgensen can’t phone it in from home. But as many people found out during the pandemic, working hundreds of miles away from HQ is a feasible option that allows people to relocate without racking up commuter miles.

Thus another possibility arises for those who can pull it off: hybrid super commuting. Assuming you’re called back into the office from a long distance — as many companies are demanding these days — it’s not out of the question to work out an arrangement that still allows you to work from home part of the week.

Or you may choose to do it that way, as increasing numbers have done; the Wall Street Journal calls these hybrid travel warriors “a new breed of commuter.” And who knows? Should Jorgensen take on a haircut side hustle in Charlotte, or her boss open a satellite salon there, she could work at home (or very close to it) several days a week, too.

Prep Rally: Here are the running backs you need to know about

Running back Jordon Davison of Mater Dei is back for his senior season and committed to Oregon.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Hi, and welcome to another edition of Prep Rally. My name is Eric Sondheimer . Continuing a summer look at players to watch for football this fall, let’s examine running backs.

The workhorses

Running back Karson Cox of Oak Hills.

As much as high schools in Southern California have become passing machines, being able to run the ball helps open the passing game, and there are plenty of running backs to get excited about this fall.

Karson Cox of Oak Hills, a UCLA commit, comes back faster, stronger and hungrier to show his worth. Brian Bonner of Valencia ran a 10.48 100 meters this spring and 4.48 40-yard dash laser time this summer, so imagine putting that speed to good use for his junior season.

Dane Dunn of Sierra Canyon has been the go-to back for three years. Anthony League of Long Beach Millikan is committed to Cal and was a standout at Los Alamitos. Sean Morris is a punishing junior at Loyola at 190 pounds and growing.

No one had better statistics last season than David Sandy of Los Angeles Jordan. He finished with 2,904 yards rushing and 39 touchdowns.

Jordon Davison of Mater Dei has been a major contributor since his freshman season and committed to Oregon on Friday. Quaid Carr of Servite is a San Diego State commit who scored 17 touchdowns. Brice Hawkins of Simi Valley is quick and explosive. Senior Steve Chavez of Orange Lutheran had some big games last season and committed to San Jose State. Koen Glover of St. Bonaventure rushed for 1,189 yards and 15 touchdowns.

One of the fastest players should be junior Deshonne Redeaux of Oaks Christian. He decided to take a year off from track to get healthy and build up strength for this fall.

The Inland Empire remains strong with Jojo Solis of Aquinas and Da’lon Williams of Hesperia. Williams gained 2,051 yards as a sophomore. Kurelle Thomas of Murrieta Valley is a weapon running and receiving.

Julius Gillick of Edison rushed for 1,596 yards against top competition and just committed to Montana. Jaylin Burt has left North Hollywood for St. Genevieve after rushing for 1,399 yards last season. Ronnell Hewitt left Birmingham for Westlake after rushing for 1,438 yards as a sophomore.

Kelton Strickland gained 1,290 yards as a freshman at Warren and is now at Corona Centennial. Elijah Wilson rushed for 1,344 yards as a freshman for St. Monica. Sophomore Edward Rivera of South East had 1,125 yards rushing as a freshman. Maya Angelou went 12-1 last season behind sophomore Nicholas Quintanilla , a 1,000-yard rusher.

Family commitment

St. Francis senior quarterback John Sanders commutes from his home in Mojave to La Canada.

Since the fall of 2021, the most amazing commitment began. Tracey Sanders bought a new hybrid car so that six days a week he’d be able to drive his then freshman son, John , from the family home in Mojave to St. Francis High in La Cañada. It’s 80 miles one way and takes 90 minutes driving the 14 Freeway.

Two years later, his other son, Shawn, joined John in attending St. Francis and making the 160-mile round-trip commute. Both are quarterbacks and had been trained by St. Francis coach Dean Herrington since they were youth athletes.

“We do whatever we have to do for the kids,” said Tracey , a general contractor who also helps coach at St. Francis.

A profile of Sanders’ rise as a quarterback and four-year ongoing commitment.

Paul Knox was the football coach at Dorsey during the Dons' miracle last-play win in the City final against Taft.

The 2001 City Section football final at the Coliseum produced the most dramatic ending in championship game history.

All Taft had to do with seven seconds left was get off a punt and the Toreadors would be celebrating a 14-13 victory over Dorsey.

Then came the stunning reversal. Dorsey blocked the punt, recovered it and ran it in for a game-ending touchdown and a 19-14 victory.

Here’s a look back from a 2020 story.

  1. I need help figuring out if a 100 mile roundtrip commute is ...

56 cents per mile is the standard IRS deduction rate for 2021. I don't know what the difference in mileage is, but that rate is meant to account for gas + wear/tear, so we can try to use it to estimate the monetary cost of the commute. So, miles difference (round trip) * .56 * 5 gives the added (estimated) monetary cost of the commute per day.

  2. Anyone daily drive these on LONG commutes? 100+ miles? : r/ft86

I daily drive my 2018 BRZ exactly 100 miles around trip, 5 days a week. I've done about 40,000 miles since I got the car in December 2020. Manual transmission, I average between 32-36 mpg if im not ripping it, but I do enjoy myself often as it's all on back roads. For me, this is the perfect car. I can't imagine commuting in anything else.
