Torii Gates: Japan’s Famous Arches With Mysterious Origins

  • Author: Jason Brock

Torii gates are seen all over Japan — and they’ve been around for centuries. But why do they exist in the first place? This article will explain the meaning of torii, their origins and even recommend some famous ones to visit.

What Is A Torii Gate?

Torii gate in Tokyo

Torii gates (or just torii for short) are traditional Japanese arches that usually mark the entrance to Shinto shrines (although they are occasionally present at Buddhist temples and other locations, too). Torii have a very specific shape consisting of two vertical pillars with two horizontal beams across the top. They are usually made of wood or stone, but other materials can be used, too (even plastic or metal). They are almost always painted vermillion (a sort of red-orange color) or left in a natural state (unpainted). On a spiritual level, torii gates are seen as markers that indicate the boundary between the human and sacred worlds. There can be various levels of torii, as well. For example, there is always the first entry gate, but there can be a secondary or third gate for deeper areas within the shrine.

History Of Torii Gates: Unknown Origin

As Professor Mori Mizue of Kokugakuin University explained , historians can’t agree about exactly where the torii came from. “The origin of torii has been explained by numerous theories; some claim that they are indigenous to Japan, while others view them as having [been] imported from abroad.” He also explains that even the word itself, “torii,” has debatable origins. Some say it could have come from the word “bird perch” ( toriiyasu or toriita ) or “pass through and enter” ( toriiru ). Japanese neuroscientist and writer, Ken Mogi, talks more about the word origin on YouTube .

The Meaning And Importance Of Torii

Woman dressed in a kimono walking under a torii gate

The significance of torii gates is mostly defined by the shrine or location they are attached to. Torii are usually just entryways and markers that indicate the site of a location that Japanese people feel is important or sacred.

To understand torii well, you might want to understand a bit about Shinto first. The Association of Shinto Shrines in Japan says that observers of the Shinto faith worship ancestors as family guardians and show respect to many different kami (deities or gods). The association also says “There are kami of the mountains, and kami of the sea. Kami are all around us, in every thing and every person.” Many of these kami have their own shrines, and torii mark the location of (and are the entryway into) these shrines. This video has an excellent explanation of Shinto in relation to shrines, kami and torii.

Religion in Japan?

So, you might have heard that Japanese people aren’t very religious . And, it’s true that the number of people adhering to a religion in Japan is steadily declining. If that’s the case, then why are there all these shrines and torii everywhere? Well, even if they don’t call themselves religious, many Japanese people still practice some Shinto traditions. You could compare it to non-Christian Americans celebrating Christmas, perhaps. It’s become more of a part of mainstream culture than a religious thing. With this in mind, foreigners are welcome to visit Shinto shrines and pass through the torii gates regardless of their own religious or spiritual beliefs. “Shinto has no founder, no holy book, and not even the concept of religious conversion, but Shinto places value in harmony with nature and virtues such as ’Magokoro (sincere heart)’” — according to Meiji Jingu shrine .

Types Of Torii Gates

There are various styles of torii that can be seen in Japan, and they can be split into two main groups: shinmei and myōjin . The main characteristic of the shinmei torii are the straight beams that run horizontally along the top. The myōjin, on the other hand, have a bit of a curve. Japan Architecture has some interesting diagrams of each, along with some detailed terminology on torii parts.

Most Popular Torii Gates To Visit

Fushimi inari torii gates in Kyoto

It’s so hard to say which torii is the best to visit in Japan, but of course there are some really popular ones you might want to see. Here are a few notable ones.

Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kyoto - This is maybe the most well-known and most-pictured torii spot in Japan. You know it — the one with literally thousands of torii lined up like a tunnel of red-orange (vermillion) gates. These torii are called the Senbon Torii . Besides being a popular choice for instagram pics, walking through the vibrant red gates in contrast with the lush green forest is an almost spiritual experience (and also very tiring if you’ve already been walking all day). To reach Fushimi Inari Taisha, take a train from Kyoto Station to Inari Station on the JR Nara Line. The shrine is about a five-minute walk from the station.

Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima - This is definitely worth visiting, as it’s one of the most unique of the torii in Japan. Located on the island of Miyajima near Hiroshima, Itsukushima Shrine is famous for its "floating" torii gate. This iconic gate stands in the waters of the Seto Inland Sea and people say it appears to float during high tide. Speaking of the tide, you’ll probably want to check when the tide is up and/or down before you visit. When the tide is low, you can actually walk up to the torii. To get there, go to Hiroshima first (you might take the Shinkansen ). Next, take a train to Miyajimaguchi Station from Hiroshima. Then, take a ferry to Miyajima Island. Itsukushima Shrine is within walking distance from the ferry terminal, and you’ll be able to see the giant torii on the water. For the ferry, you have more than one option, so take a look at what’s available .

Meiji Shrine, Tokyo - This shrine is located in Tokyo's busy Shibuya district (near Harajuku Station). It’s incredible how you can be so close to the super busy city with tons of pedestrians and then walk right into this peaceful, green space. As Japan Journeys said , “The Harajuku entrance to the Meiji Shrine grounds is marked by a towering wooden torii gate, standing 40 feet tall and made from 1,600 year old cypress.” It’s incredible. The tranquil atmosphere along with the beautiful forest and shrine complex make it a must-see. One way to get there is by going to Harajuku Station. From the station, take the West exit, and Meiji Shrine’s huge wooden torii will be right in front of you.

Unusual Torii

Sakurai Shrine in Fukuoka

Not every Japanese arch is the same (which you’ve probably realized already if you’ve read this far). They come in many styles and colors and are placed at all kinds of locations. Here are a few unusual torii.

Sakurai Shrine, Fukuoka - This may be the most beautiful torii of all. It’s pure white, and it stands right on the beach. When you look through the archway from the right angle, you can see a pair of large rocks right in the center. It’s not exactly close to the main part of the city (about an hour away), but you can get there by taking a bus and a train. In Fukuoka, take the local Chikuzen-Maebaru line from Hakata station. Then, get off the train at Kyūdai-Gakkentoshi station and catch the Nishinoura bus line all the way to Futamigaura station. It will be just about a minute walk from there. Note : Don’t forget to grab water at the convenience store before you take off — stay hydrated!

Hoshiimo Jinja Shrine, Ibaraki - This unique set of Japanese arches is unique because of its color. The torii here are yellow. The color seems to be related to the production of the hoshi-imo snack in the region — a sweet potato snack with a golden, yellow-ish color. To get there from Tokyo Station, take the Hitachi or Tokiwa line to Katsuta Station. Next, take the Ajigaura to its last stop, Ajigaura Station. From there it’s just a couple of minutes away (walking).

AiiRO Cafe, Tokyo - Okay, this one doesn’t usually pop up on any torii lists, but it’s one of the only (maybe the only) rainbow torii in Japan. This torii doesn’t have any religious meaning, according to staff, but the rainbow coloring does have another meaning — it marks an LGBTQIA+ welcoming space. It’s actually in front of a “mix bar” (that’s basically a gay bar that is open to all kinds of people) called AiiRO Cafe. So, if you want to grab a drink and check out Tokyo’s LGBTQIA+ nightlife, stop by! To get there from Tokyo Station, take the Marunouchi Line to Shinjuku Gyoenmae Station. It’s about a 6 minute walk from there.

Some Torii Tips

  • When you go through the torii (walk under it), you should bow once. This is true for both entering and leaving.
  • As Meiji Shrine recommends : “Going through the torii archway, you will see the sando (the path leading up to the shrine). Please note that you should not walk in the center of the sando as it is considered to be a path where the gods walk.”
  • Don’t worry too much about getting everything right when trying to observe Japanese customs surrounding torii and shrines — just do your best. People understand that foreigners will not know everything.

Complete Shirdi Guide to Plan Your Sai Baba Pilgrimage

What to Know When Visiting Sai Baba in Shirdi

Shirdi is a small town in India that's devoted to the popular saint Sai Baba. He preached tolerance towards all religions and equality of all people. About 60,000 devotees flock to Shirdi every day, as an important pilgrimage place for people of all faiths. It's one of the busiest pilgrimage sites in India.

Who Was Shirdi Sai Baba?

Sai Baba of Shirdi was an Indian guru. His place and date of birth is unknown, although he passed away on October 15, 1918. His body has been entombed at the temple complex in Shirdi. His teachings combined elements of Hinduism and Islam. Many Hindu devotees consider him an incarnation of Lord Krishna, while other devotees consider him to be an incarnation of Lord Dattatreya. Many devotees believe that he was a Satguru, an enlightened Sufi Pir, or a Qutub.

Sai Baba's real name is also unknown. His name "Sai" was apparently given to him when he arrived at Shirdi, to attend a wedding. A local temple priest recognized him as a Muslim saint, and greeted him with the words 'Ya Sai!', meaning 'Welcome Sai!'. The Shirdi Sai Baba movement began in the late 19th century, while he was living in Shirdi. After 1910, his fame began to spread to Mumbai, and then throughout India. Many people visited him because they believed he could perform miracles.

Getting to Shirdi

Shirdi is located about 250 kilometers (143 miles) northeast of Mumbai , and 90 kilometers (56 miles) southeast of Nashik, in Maharashtra. It's most popularly accessed from Mumbai. By bus, traveling time is seven to eight hours. It's possible to take a daytime or overnight bus. By train, travel time ranges from six to 12 hours. There are three trains, all of which run overnight.

If you're coming from somewhere else in India, Shirdi's new airport started functioning on October 1, 2017 and is currently being expanded. It's about 30 minutes southwest of the city. Alliance Air (a subsidiary of Air India), and low-cost carriers SpiceJet and IndiGo, service the airport. Alliance Air operates daily Shirdi flights from Mumbai and Hyderabad. SpiceJet flies from Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Kolkata. IndiGo recently added daily non-stop flights from Delhi and Chennai.

  • Find out more about how to get from Mumbai to Shirdi.

Ventura Airconnect operates non-scheduled flights to Shirdi from Surat in Gujarat.

The other nearest airport is at Aurangabad, around two hours away. Alternatively, trains from quite a few cities stop at the railway station in Shirdi. Its name is Sainagar Shirdi (SNSI).

Weather-wise, the best time to visit Shirdi is from October to March, when it's cooler and dry. However, crowd peak during the festive months from September to December, with maximum crowds around Dussehra and Diwali.

The most popular day to visit is on Thursday. This is Sai Baba's holy day. Many people who want a wish granted visit the temple and fast on nine consecutive Thursdays (referred to as the Sai Vrat Pooja). However, if you do visit on Thursday, be prepared for it to be extremely crowded there. There's a procession of Sai Baba's chariot and slippers at 9.15 p.m.

Other busy times are on weekends and during the Holi, Gudi Padwa, Guru Purnima, Ram Navami festivals. The temple is kept open overnight during these festivals, and the crowd swells to a suffocating size.

If you want to avoid the crowds, apparently Fridays at 12-1 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. are good times to visit. Also, daily from 3.30-4 p.m. In general, the least-crowded days are Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Visiting the Shirdi Sai Baba Temple Complex

The temple complex is made up of a number different areas, with different entry gates depending on whether you want to wander around the temple complex and have darshan (viewing) of the Sai Baba idol from afar, or whether you want entry to the Samadhi Temple (where Sai Baba's body is entombed) and make an offering in front of the idol. The Samadhi Temple is the hub of activity. It's the main temple, and attracts the most devotees.

You'll be allowed into the Samadhi Temple for the morning aarti (worship ritual) at 5.30 a.m. This is followed by the Holy Bath of Sai Baba. Darshan is allowed from 7 a.m., except during aarti time. There's a half hour aarti at noon, another one at sunset (around 6-6.30 p.m.) and a night aarti at 10 p.m. After that, the temple closes. Abhishek puja also takes place in the mornings, and Satyananarayan puja in the mornings and afternoons.

Offerings such as flowers, garlands, coconuts, and sweets can be purchased from the shops in and around temple complex.

You should bathe before entering the Samadhi Temple, and washing facilities are provided at the temple complex for doing so.

The time taken to line up for the Samadhi Temple and have darshan varies. It can be completed in one hour, or can take up to six hours. The average time is 2-3 hours.

All the main attractions related to Sai Baba are within walking distance of the temple.

Do be aware that phones, cameras and other electronic devices aren't permitted inside the main temple area. You can leave them in the lockers outside.

Tip: Buy Admission Passes Online to Save Time

If you don't want to wait and are willing to pay a bit extra, it's possible to book both VIP darshan and aarti online. Darshan costs 200 rupees. It's 600 rupees for the morning aarti (Kakada aarti), and 400 rupees for the noon, evening and night aarti. Visit the Shri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust Online Services website to make bookings. Entry is through Gate 1 (VIP gate). You can also get darshan tickets at the VIP gate, except on Thursdays.

It's also possible to opt for a Quick Darshan, at a cost of 1,500 rupees.

Where to Stay

The temple trust provides a huge range of accommodations for devotees. There's everything from hall and dormitory accommodations, to budget rooms with air-conditioning. Rates cost from 100 rupees to 900 rupees a night. The newest accommodations were built in 2008 and are at Dwarawati Bhakti Niwas. The biggest accommodation complex, consisting 542 rooms of various categories, is Bhakta Niwas around 10 minutes walk from the temple complex. Book online at the Shri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust Online Services website . Or, visit the Shri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust Reception Center in Shirdi, opposite the bus stand.

Alternatively, it's possible to stay in a hotel. Recommended ones are the very popular Marigold Residency (2,800 rupees upwards), Hotel Sai Jashan (2,800 rupees upwards), Keys Prima Hotel Temple Tree with a swimming pool (3,000 rupees upwards), Saint Laurn Spiritual Resort with spa and meditation (3,000 rupees upwards), Jivanta Boutique Hotel (3,500 rupees upwards), Sun n Sand (5,500 rupees upwards), Daiwik Hotel (2,000 rupees upwards) and Temple View Hotel (2,000 rupees upwards).

If you don't have a place to stay in Shirdi, you can keep your belongings at the Shri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust for a nominal fee.

Things to Do Nearby

The Sai Teerth Devotional Theme Park near Sun n Sand hotel combines technology with entertainment, providing four informative shows (including one about Sai Baba's life and a 5D episode of the Hindu epic The Ramayana ) and a train ride past replicas of holy temples in India. It also has a restaurant that serves decent, reasonably priced food.

The Wet n Joy Water Park is another attraction in the area, with water slides and water-based rides.

You can see some of Sai Baba's personal belongings and other items at the Dixit Wada Museum, within the Sai Baba Sansthan Trust. It's open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is free to enter.

Dwarkamai is an unusual mosque with a temple inside, situated to the right of the entrance to Samadhi Temple. It was restored by Sai Baba, and he stayed there.

The Sai Heritage Village is modeled on Shirdi from a century ago, and lets visitors experience living in Shirdi during Sai Baba’s time.

Dangers and Annoyances

Shirdi is a safe town but it does have its share of touts. They will offer to find you cheap accommodations and take you on temple tours. The catch is that they'll also pressure you to buy from their stores at inflated prices. Be aware of and ignore anyone who approaches you.

Rory McIlroy starts strong at RBC Canadian Open

Change Text Size

Rory McIlroy is a two-time winner of the RBC Canadian Open but he still got busted for gate-crashing a hospitality tent at Hamilton Golf and Country Club.

He had just lost his tee shot way right at the par-5 17th hole, and that’s when things got weird.

“I obviously hit it into the hospitality and some guy yelled out, ‘You need a wrist band to get in here!’” McIlroy said Thursday. “So that was pretty funny.”

Availed of a free drop, McIlroy made par and in fact strung together nine of them on his first nine, the back, before birdies at Nos. 1, 5, 7 and 8 gave him a 4-under 66.

Rory McIlroy sticks it close from 128 yards and makes the birdie at RBC Canadian

Who’s laughing now?

He was tied with Ryan Fox and three behind early co-leaders Sam Burns and Sean O’Hair.

“I played the back nine blind,” said McIlroy, who shot 61 at the 2019 RBC Canadian Open at Hamilton, before its recent restoration. “Hadn't seen the back nine. Only played the front nine in the pro-am. I was sort of happy enough to get out of there in even par and not make a bogey.

“But once I got that nine holes out of the way,” he continued, “I knew there were some chances on that front side and played probably much better on that front side. Four birdies there, no bogeys, was a good day's work.”

Rory McIlroy's up-and-down for birdie at RBC Canadian

“I've played a lot, but it's been good,” he said. “It's been – I've started to play my way into form and I've played well the last few weeks and hopefully I can just keep that going.”

He’s also keeping the mistakes off the scorecard, going bogey-free Thursday.

“The start of the year or at least through like February, March, April, I was making some big numbers,” he said after besting playing partners Nick Taylor (72) and Taylor Pendrith (69), “There was a lot of volatility on the scorecard.

“But to play bogey-free rounds is really nice again.”

Before Thursday, McIlroy’s most recent memory of Hamilton was his final-round 61 in 2019. With a chance to shoot his first 59 on the PGA TOUR, he bogeyed the last hole and said he had to remind himself to cheer up because he’d still won – by seven.

So far, at least, his good Hamilton mojo is holding steady. With three more good rounds and a third RBC Canadian Open title, they might even give him a wristband.

Gates of the Arctic National Park

Arctic circle, native culture, wildlife viewing, tundra, anaktuvuk pass.

Alaska’s Gates of the Arctic National Park is a wilderness paradise. For over 11,000 years, Alaska Natives have lived and survived on the land now encompassed by Gates of the Arctic National Park in Alaska’s Far North Region , primarily by hunting caribou. The area’s cultural history is still visible today in the daily lives of the people living within the park boundaries. The beautiful Brooks Mountain Range spans the park and offers explorers an ultimate Alaska wilderness adventure. Backpackers sometimes spend weeks traveling through the park’s sub-arctic landscape. The wildlife in the park includes muskoxen, bears, moose, and caribou. Three different herds of caribou migrate through the region.

Gates of the Arctic National Park’s summer season is from mid-May to mid-September. The main park ranger station is located in Anaktuvuk Pass Village. The village hosts visitors from around the world, and offers tours about life in the village. It is important to note that Anaktuvuk Pass Village is not a recreated model, it is a real Alaskan village, and the privacy of its residents must be respected during tours. Most visitors fly from Fairbanks to Anaktuvuk Pass for a day tour, though drive/fly combination tours to the area are also offered. These escorted van tours travel north from Fairbanks on the Dalton Highway to Coldfoot. From here, visitors then fly on to Anaktuvuk Pass. While this tour is longer, it gives the sub-arctic Alaska landscape a better feel. All these tours cross the Arctic Circle, and each visitor receives a personal Arctic Circle certificate for this accomplishment.

No overnight accommodations are inside the Gates of the Arctic National Park boundaries. Only day excursions are offered into the park. However, Bettles Lodge is nearby, located in the Brooks Range, and perfect for guests wishing to overnight in the Far North. You can take day tours or flightseeing tours from Bettles into the Gates of the Arctic.

Man who survived Golden Gate Bridge suicide attempt shares his message in Tri-State

by Liz Bonis & Megan Burgasser, WKRC

(Provided Image)

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A man who attempted to take his own life by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge is now an advocate for suicide prevention.

Kevin Hines is on a mission to help everyone “be here tomorrow."

He shared during a recent one-on-one interview with Local 12 how he keeps overcoming challenges in his own mental health journey, one day at a time.

“In the year 2000, due to bipolar depression, I leapt off the Golden Gate Bridge in an attempt to take my life. It was the single worst action I had ever made up until that point, and a sea lion kept me afloat in the water until the Coast Guard arrived behind me,” Hines said.

At the time, there was less than a 1% survival rate in those who attempted suicide from the Golden Gate Bridge. Hines was one of the advocates who fought for netting on the bridge, and now, it's there.

Hines was in the Tri-State to speak at an event called "An Evening of Hope." It raises money for the Lindner Center of Hope, which offers mental health services and treatments.

“It’s a miracle that I’m alive today. One of the foremost back surgeons was visiting the hospital. He wasn’t supposed to be there. He opted to do my back surgery, replacing my shattered back with titanium, saving me the ability to stand, walk, and run,” Hines said.

Since then, he has shared his recovery journey with thousands of people through his book “The Art of Being Broken: How Storytelling Saves Lives”.

“Every time I have a suicidal ideation or ideal, I find a mirror and I say that my thoughts don’t have to be my actions. They don’t have to own or define me, and the second thing I do is I find anyone willing to listen, and I say four very simple, effective words: I need help now,” Hines said. “Suicide doesn't take the pain away. It makes it entirely impossible for things to ever get better.”

The Lindner Center of Hope raised more than $170,000 at the event. The money will be used to expand its services.

Airline seat selection fees should be banned. Until then, here's how to avoid them

Airline seat selection fees are one of the most hated surcharges in the travel industry – and they should be illegal.

It costs an airline nothing to reserve your seat. Yet passengers shell out anywhere from $25 to more than $100 for a confirmed seat assignment or to sit next to their friends and family.

If the Fair Fees Act proposed by Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., passes, then seat selection fees would fly away. The law prohibits airlines from imposing fees that are not reasonable and proportional to the costs it incurs.

But airlines really went too far when they began charging families with young children for seat assignments, sometimes even suggesting parents could be separated from their kids if they didn't pay. Earlier this year, the Department of Transportation threatened to create a new regulation to allow families to sit together on flights .

Check out  Elliott Confidential , the newsletter the travel industry doesn't want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights, and exclusive strategies for becoming a better traveler. But don't tell anyone!

"Airlines can’t just treat a child like a piece of baggage," President Joe Biden said in a recent press conference announcing airline policy changes .

But these proposals will not help you this summer. And even if they did, they would exclude some passengers, including travelers with older kids who might still need to sit near an adult, passengers with special needs, honeymooning couples, BFFs, and … the list goes on.

How do they avoid paying more for adjacent seats? And are there any new ways of avoiding seat selection fees?

Don't do it: No, you shouldn't recline your seat on planes. Here's why.

Should babies, smelly passengers be on a no-fly list? Dealing with difficult air travelers

What is an airline seat selection fee?

A seat selection fee allows you to reserve a seat in your class of service. Each airline ticket comes with a confirmed seat, but if you want to choose your seat location, most domestic airlines will charge an additional fee.

These extras are not new. Airlines started to experiment with seat selection fees in 2008, and they caught on a decade later. What is new is that the fees are rising, sometimes increasing the cost of a ticket by hundreds of dollars. Last year, U.S. airlines collected $4.2 billion in seat assignment fees .

How do you avoid a seat selection fee?

If you're traveling with a group, the best way to avoid a seat selection fee is to book your seats at the same time. If the airline is assigning seats for you, it typically seats people under the same record locator number together. With added government pressure on the airlines, it's unlikely they will intentionally separate a family – and if they accidentally do, they will find a way of undoing it.

Seat selection fees are a mind game. If you're booking your flights online, you'll face pop-ups and screens that try to convince you that you need to pay more to upgrade your travel experience. Just say "no." Within 24 hours of your departure, the airline will assign you a seat. Pro tip: If you want to avoid paying for a seat assignment, arrive at the airport early. That way, you'll have the pick of the unassigned seats.

AI, self-service are taking over travel. Will everything become a DIY experience?

New strategies for sitting together on a flight

There are some lesser-known travel hacks that will let you find a seat together.

◾ Find two seats together : ExpertFlyer , a subscription service for frequent fliers, has a service called Seat Alerts with an "Any Two Seats Together" option that monitors airline seat maps and can tell you if two seats together become available.

"If you need more seats, you can also create a seat alert for specific seats around the seats you already have assigned in case one of them opens up," said Chris Lopinto, founder of ExpertFlyer. Then you can claim both seats, but you may have to pay extra.

◾ Be last to board : Here's another tip I've heard from several travelers, but it only works if the flight isn't full and you don't have a lot of carry-on luggage. First, find out if it's a full flight by looking at the seat map online or asking a gate agent. Then wait until the last person has boarded and look for two empty seats in your class of service.

◾ Ask another passenger to switch : Asking a passenger to swap seats so your traveling companion can sit next to you can be problematic because many passengers have paid extra for their seats. Kate Zuckerman, CEO of Thrive Family Travel, which provides travel coaching services for families, said there's a right way to trade seats.

"Try to offer them something of value, such as a coveted aisle placement instead of a mediocre middle seat, or a seat closer to the front of the plane," she says.

Other travelers have offered gifts, snacks, or even cash. Zuckerman said she usually finds someone who will volunteer to give up their seat. And she pays it forward. When she travels solo, she's always the first to trade seats with someone who wants to sit next to a friend or family member.

Should you ask a gate agent for a better seat?

Asking a gate agent for a seat next to your sweetheart may be a waste of time. Karen Villano, a gate agent for a major airline, said airlines always pressure the airport staff to collect money in exchange for a better seat, even if it's just a window seat or emergency exit row in economy class.

"If I change your seat to a paid seat without collecting money, the company is alerted," she said. "It goes on my permanent record of not complying with company policy."

Villano says airlines will waive their collect-money-at-all-costs rule for any family with a young child. But anyone else will have to pay for a better seat. The real opportunities to switch come after you've boarded the flight.

Wait, do you really have to sit together?

Airlines have been cashing in on passengers' desire to sit together for years. But before you try to beg a gate agent for a seat next to your companion or bribe a fellow passenger to swap seats, ask yourself: Do we really need to sit together?

If the answer is yes, chances are the crew will find a way to make it happen. A single mom with twins. Grandpa, who has dementia, flying with a caretaker. As eager as airlines are to collect more seat fees from you, they will not allow passengers in situations like this to be separated.

For the rest of us, the answer might be "no." If you're on vacation, you'll spend a lot of time together once you arrive. If you're traveling with your spouse, you might need the break. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a little alone time to enjoy your flight.

What if? What if summer travel isn't as hectic as expected? Why last-minute plans could work out.

The days of charging seat selection fees are numbered

Airline seat selection fees represent everything that is wrong with the airline industry. Airlines took away your ability to reserve a seat next to a family member or loved one and then started charging you extra for it. It costs airlines nothing to reserve a seat, but now they're making billions a year from it.

When passengers try to book seats together this summer, they'll see seat assignment fees for what they are – pure airline greed. And now, finally, the government is going to put an end to these unconscionable surcharges.
