The latest World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Development Index (TTDI) highlights how the recovery of the travel and tourism sector since the pandemic has been uneven, but suggests some nations are better placed than others to respond to the challenges and opportunities of the future.

This message is echoed by the Henley Passport Index most powerful passports tracker, which offers good news in particular for many EU citizens.

The index has been tracking the world’s most powerful passports for the past 19 years. The list ranks passports by how many countries they allow the holder to visit without a visa.

In the joint top spot this year are France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore and Spain, with citizens of those countries able to visit 194 out of 227 countries visa-free, or by obtaining a visa on arrival. Japan is at the top of the list for the sixth year in a row.

The TTDI benchmarks and measures “the set of factors and policies that enable the sustainable and resilient development of the T&T sector, which in turn contributes to the development of a country”. The TTDI is a direct evolution of the long-running Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI), with the change reflecting the index’s increased coverage of T&T development concepts, including sustainability and resilience impact on T&T growth and is designed to highlight the sector’s role in broader economic and social development as well as the need for T&T stakeholder collaboration to mitigate the impact of the pandemic, bolster the recovery and deal with future challenges and risks. Some of the most notable framework and methodology differences between the TTCI and TTDI include the additions of new pillars, including Non-Leisure Resources, Socioeconomic Resilience and Conditions, and T&T Demand Pressure and Impact. Here are the top 10 rankings for the most powerful passports in 2024, and the number of other countries these passport holders can visit, without having to obtain a visa in advance.

The link between visa-free travel and economic power

As well as ranking passport power, Henley & Partners’ report also looks at the relationship between global mobility and economic prosperity. By analyzing trade blocs as well as individual passports, a picture emerges of the most powerful and wealthy parts of the world, and how their citizens enjoy greater levels of access to other countries.

The G7, for instance, which comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, has a 44% share of global GDP. The G7 scores 100% for internal access, meaning citizens of those seven countries can visit all others in the bloc visa-free. It has an 85% score on the overall passport index, indicating the level of worldwide visa-free access those nationalities enjoy, but only a 39% score for openness – the number of other nationalities that can visit G7 countries visa-free.

By contrast, the African Union, with a 3% share of GDP, has a 28% score on the overall passport index, but conversely, a higher level of openness at 49%. “ African mobility is headed for a crossroads in 2024 , with the possibility of a drastic improvement in intracontinental travel, passport power, and passport openness,” said author and journalist Justice Malala, in an analysis of the status of travel and tourism in Africa. His comments came after Kenya decided to ditch visas from January 2024 , with the aim of encouraging more tourists.

Tourism contributes 10% of global GDP and generates 1 in every 10 jobs, according to the World Economic Forum’s report, Ten Principles for Sustainable Destinations: Charting a new path forward for travel and tourism.

Singapore – one of the top power passport countries – aims to harness the personal and economic benefits of tourism with its Skills Framework for Tourism , an initiative “designed to promote skills mastery and lifelong learning” among its workforce.

Cultivating the workforce is also one of the Forum’s 10 principles for sustainable tourism, which it says can contribute to 5 of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals .

But the sector still has a long way to go to reach equity. As Dr Christian H Kaelin, Chairman of Henley & Partners, pointed out: “The average number of destinations travellers are able to access visa-free has nearly doubled from 58 in 2006 to 111 in 2024. However … the top-ranked countries are now able to travel to a staggering 166 more destinations visa-free than Afghanistan , which sits at the bottom of the ranking with access to just 28 countries without a visa.”

Visa-free countries are destinations that passport holders can enter without obtaining a visa beforehand. However, all travelers to visa-free countries must carry a valid passport or identity card to prove their nationality and identity throughout their journey.

The rank of a passport (passport ranking) refers to the position that the passport occupies in the overall passport ranking index. Compared to the passports of other countries around the world, the strength of a passport depends on the total mobility score that the passport provides to its holders. This is measured by the total number of countries to which its passport holder can travel to, either without a visa (visa-free access), with a visa on arrival, or with an electronic travel authorization. The greater the number of these destinations, the higher the total points for freedom of movement, and therefore the stronger the passport.

There are many types of passports, including ordinary passports, official passports, diplomatic passports, service passports, and emergency passports.

You need a passport if you want to travel to another country. However, there are rare cases in which some countries allow citizens of other specific countries to enter their territory using only a national identification card (ID) instead of a passport.

A visa is required if the country you are planning to visit demands that you obtain one prior to entry.

A biometric passport or electronic passport is similar to an ordinary passport. The difference is that it contains a smart chip in its cover or on one of its pages, which includes the passport holder’s data. Biometric passports were created as a way to respond to the growing threat of identity theft and threats to national security.

The best passports for international travel in 2023 were just released. These are the top ones you can buy.

• The latest  Henley Passport Index ranks the best passports for visa-free international travel in 2023.
• Eight countries with citizenship by investment programs made the top 50, including Austria and Malta.
• The programs allow foreigners to receive so-called "golden passports" in exchange for investments.

One of the most powerful assets money can buy in today's turbulent world isn't a mansion or sports car — it's a passport , preferably a good one. 

This week, immigration firm Henley & Partners released its latest global passport index ranking 199 passports by the number of countries they allow you to access without needing a visa, per data from the International Air Transport Authority. 

Of the top 50 best passports for international travel, only eight countries offer citizenship-by-investment programs. More commonly known as "golden" passports, the controversial immigration schemes allow foreigners to receive citizenship in a country in exchange for making substantial investments in the local economy.

Austria, whose passport allows visa-free access to 188 countries, was ranked fifth on the list — above the UK, Canada, and the US — making it one of the most powerful passports in the world. Unsurprisingly, it's also one of the most difficult passports for foreigners to receive — but it's not impossible. 

Under Article 10, Section 6 of the Austrian Citizenship Act, the Austrian government is able to award citizenship to foreigners who show "extraordinary merit" and contribute significantly to the state's interests — either scientifically, culturally, or economically. 

Unlike in other citizenship-by-investment programs, applicants must invest directly into the Austrian economy. This can include setting up a business, creating jobs, or introducing new technologies, according to Austrian law experts . The exact investment amount required for the award is not clear, but is estimated to be around $9.5 million , Forbes reports. 

If you can't afford Austria's multi-million dollar price tag, Malta, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, and North Macedonia offer less-stringent golden passport programs and are ranked lower down on Henley's top 50 list, each allowing visa-free access to over 100 countries. 

Out of the eight, island nations Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, and St. Lucia have the least expensive golden passport programs, granting citizenship in exchange for a minimum investment of $100,000.

On the other end of the spectrum, Malta — the most popular golden passport program thanks to the nation's EU membership — requires applicants to own or rent local real estate for five years, contribute between €600,000 and €750,000, and donate an additional €10,000.

Golden passport schemes were initially created for struggling nations to attract foreign talent and investment with the hopes of boosting the local economy. The EU has recently cracked down on the programs, arguing that they pose a security risk to the union while creating havens for sanctioned individuals.

The latest ranking of passports with the most access to countries for visa-free travel shows Asian countries are vying for dominance, with the U.S. passport stagnating somewhat.

Japan, Singapore, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain have the world’s most powerful passports, allowing visa-free entry to 194 countries out of 227. That’s according to the 2024 Henley Passport Index  rankings released on Wednesday. 

Henley, a global residence and citizenship by investment consultancy, ranks the world’s passports according to the latest International Air Transport Association  (IATA) data on the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. 

Japan and Singapore have vied for the top spots in the rankings for the past five years, but four European countries have now joined them to share the top spot.

Passports Offering the Most Visa-Free Travel

U.s. passports not the most powerful.

The U.S. is in seventh place, now granting its passport holders visa-free access to 188 destinations. Its ranking has bounced between sixth and eighth place in the past few years. The U.S. last held the top passport ranking spot, jointly with the UK, in 2014. 

The U.S. appetite for international travel remains strong, as the State Department said it issued a record 24 million passports between October 2022 and September 2023.

Skift recently reported  U.S. passport processing times only returned to normal pre-pandemic levels in December, following lengthy delays due to the unprecedented demand. Over 46 million Americans traveled abroad in the first six months of 2023, a 32% increase from the same period in 2022, according to the National Travel and Tourism Office. 

Industry analysis showed that extended visa delays ,  especially for travelers from major source markets like Brazil, India, Mexico, and China, have impacted the recovery of U.S. tourism.   

The U.S. has, however, extended its policy of waiving in-person interviews for certain low-risk visa applicants in December, aiming to alleviate the backlog. This move is expected to significantly increase the number of eligible applicants and boost traveler numbers and spending in the U.S. International traveler spending in the U.S. in October 2023  was close to $1 billion lower  than the figure recorded in October 2019. 

Closing the Global Mobility Gap

The UAE has been the top performer over the last decade to narrow its global mobility gap, adding 106 visa-free destinations since 2014 — with a 44-place leap from 55th to 11th place.

Tourism to the region has seen an impact from the Israel-Hamas conflict . Despite the ongoing concerns about the war, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region wants to grow travel to the region. The Council intends to implement a Schengen-like visa system to facilitate seamless tourist travel across the region. Commenting on the UAE index ranking, Dr. Robert Mogielnicki, Senior Resident Scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington, said the Unified Tourist Visa project is “an important example of subregional integration and connectivity — a process that would be extremely difficult to replicate across the broader Middle East and North Africa.”

India, with the world’s largest population, retains its lower end of the index, ranking 80th, with visa-free access to 57 destinations. 

China has also made substantial inroads into ease of travel for its passport holders, rising 21 places in the rankings. The country is 62nd and able to visit 85 destinations without a visa, up from 44 in 2014.

Despite China’s poor ranking compared to the Passport Index’s top 10 countries, the Asian country continues to impact global travel trends significantly. The predicted surge in travel after China’s post-pandemic reopening failed to materialize, with visa access seen as one of the concerns. How does it work?

Visas generally work through the simple rule of seeking permission from the country one wishes to visit.

For example, a non-EU tourist who wishes to visit Spain generally must first obtain a Spanish Tourist Schengen Visa .

Nationalities within the Schengen Area can freely travel between all member countries without a visa.

There are different types of visas, but the most common include the transit visa , which lasts for less than three days and is issued to people passing through a country to another destination.

The tourist visa is for people who wish to travel for leisure. There are also business visas issued to those who wish to engage in commerce in another country.

Fingerprinting

Several countries across the globe, including the United States of America, Singapore, and Japan, require adult passport holders to be fingerprinted on arrival.

Most countries take photos when visitors arrive, but it is becoming more common to also take fingerprints for all non-residents.

In Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, they have added iris scans as well.

Criminal history

Many nations in the world require visitors to be checked for any record of criminal history in their native country or any other country.

If the person is found to have any criminal history, they may be barred from entering the particular country of interest.

Vaccination

For countries like Chad, Uganda, and Benin, visitors are required to be vaccinated before traveling, and upon arrival, they are required to produce a current International Certificate of Vaccination as evidence.

In other countries, visitors are required to be vaccinated if they are coming from an infected area or nation.

Sufficient funds

Many nations, even if the passport holder has free access to that country, have to make sure that the visitor has enough funds to spend while in the country.

In addition to this, they may also require the visitor to show evidence of a ticket for exit.

Visa restrictions

Although holders of passports with visa-free access to certain countries can freely travel there, each country places certain restrictions to allow visitors into their country.

Make sure to check the entry requirements or call the country's embassy before buying flight tickets.

Schengen Visa Holder

If you hold a Schengen visa, it allows you to travel to certain countries without needing a separate visa.

This type of visa is a great option for those who frequently travel between different countries in Europe.

Some of the visa-free countries for Schengen visa holders include Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, North Macedonia, and Serbia.

Keep in mind that the length of your stay may be limited in some of these countries, and you may need to provide additional documentation upon arrival.

It's important to check the entry requirements for each country you plan to visit, as they may change frequently.

Holding the best passports or passport to travel is a privilege. How many countries can you enter without a visa or advance visa application?  

Best passports to command visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 227 global destinations are those from Europe, North America and South East Asia. 

Twenty-six European passports took the top 10 spots in the 2024 quarterly ranking.  Singapore, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia offer the most powerful passports among Asian countries. 

Singapore remained at top spot in the 2024 quarterly ranking sharing with France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Spain. South Korea moved up one spot together with Finland and Sweden.

The United Kingdom remained at fourth spot.  Canada and United States remained unchanged at seventh spot, and Australia and New Zealand at sixth spot.

Henley Passport Index 2023 and 2024 is rated based on International Air Transport Association data for 199 passports. 

Passports are one of the most important identifications for travellers. The pocket-sized document can aid or impede travellers from crossing international borders.

Mexico went up one notch to 23rd spot.  Israel moved up two spots to 21st.  Taiwan dropped two spots ranking at 35,  China at 62 and Philippines at 73, and India at 80 with Uzbekistan.

The World’s Most (and Least) Powerful Passports

Singapore has the most powerful passport in the world, according to the Henley Passport Index , with its citizens able to visit 192 countries without a prior visa. Germany, Italy and Spain come in joint second place, with their citizens able to visit 190 countries.

Even though the United States is a little further down the list, coming in 8th place, it still yields considerable power, enabling citizens to enter 184 countries without major restrictions. It’s a level of freedom also enjoyed by passport holders in Lithuania.

At the other end of the scale, the situation is very different. For passport holders in Afghanistan , Iraq and Syria for example, travel is more restrictive to most countries. The Afghan passport wields the least power of the ranking, with just 27 destinations permissible visa-free. The situation in Iraq and Syria isn’t much better, at 29 and 30 destinations, respectively.

The Henley Passport Index draws from data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA), including 199 different passports and 227 different travel destinations.

I always encourage travelers from developing countries to get a US visa at some point. It opens up doors to many other countries. More and more countries are offering visa exemption with a valid US visa. This list is growing fast.

If you are worried that the VISA-FREE list for your passport is just too small, then get a US visa. It will add about 53 countries to your VISA-FREE list. This is how you give more “power” to your “powerless” passport.

Personal experience: I have entered Mexico with a US visa many times by air, land and sea. I was rarely asked any questions. When I was asked any questions, it was mostly about how long I planned to stay in Mexico. I was always given a 180-day entry.

03. United States (of course!)

• Includes the US territories: US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam
• Excludes the US territories: American Samoa (American Samoa has its own immigration rules and does not honor US visas )

Personal experience: I have lived/worked in the US on an H1B visa for more than 8 years. I have also entered the US on my B1/B2 visa many times. I was always given a 6-month entry.

Central America

• Entry granted: 30 days
• Official source: Embassy of Belize in Washington DC, USA

Personal experience: I entered Belize from Mexico at the seaport with my India passport and US visa. The immigration procedure at the port took about 5 minutes. I was asked how long I’ll stay in Belize. I was given a 30-day entry.

05. Costa Rica

• Permitted US visas: Valid used/unused multiple-entry US visas – B1, B2, B1/B2, C1/D, D, F1, J1, H1 and L1 only
• B1, B2, B1/B2, C1/D and D visas must be valid for at least 30 days from the day of arrival
• F1, J1, H1 and L1 visas must be valid for at least 6 months from the day of arrival

Personal experience: I entered Costa Rica at San Jose International Airport with my India passport and US visa. The immigration procedure at the airport was quick. I was given a 30-day entry.

I have also entered Costa Rica from Nicaragua by land with my India passport and US visa. Immigration procedures at the land border took about 10 minutes due to long lines. I was asked to show my hotel reservation. I was given a 30-day entry.

06. El Salvador

• Burkina Faso
• Central African Republic
• Côte d’Ivoire
• Equatorial Guinea
• Guinea-Bissau

• Entry granted: 90 days total in the entire CA-4 zone (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua)
• An entry fee of 10 USD will be charged if entering by air
• If you have already entered Guatemala or Honduras, you can enter El Salvador from Guatemala or Honduras by land without any additional visa requirements as per CA-4 Border Control Agreement

Personal experience: I entered El Salvador from Guatemala by land with my India passport and US visa. There are no immigration checkpoints at El Salvador and Guatemala land borders. No entry stamp was issued.

07. Guatemala

• Côte d´Ivoire
• Dominican Republic
• US visa must be valid for at least 6 months from the day of arrival
• If you have already entered Honduras or El Salvador, you can enter Guatemala from Honduras or El Salvador by land without any additional visa requirements as per the CA-4 Border Control Agreement.

Personal Experience: I entered Guatemala from Mexico by land with my Indian passport and US visa. It took about 10 minutes at immigration. They had to look up the visa requirements to verify if I was eligible to enter on my US visa. I was asked to pay 20 MXN as an entry fee even though there is no official entry fee.

Personal experience: I entered Nicaragua by land from Honduras using my India passport and US visa. I was asked about my profession and monthly income. I had to pay a total of 63 USD ($50 VOA fee, $10 entry fee, $2 land border migration fee, and $1 municipality tax) to enter. The immigration process was slow and it took about 45 minutes.

Personal experience: I entered Taiwan at Taipei International Airport with my Indian passport and US visa. I registered for my ROC travel authorization certificate a few days before my travel to Taiwan. I was given a 30-day entry (entry was 30 days when I traveled but currently it’s only 14 days).

The 9-Passport Combo That Gives You Worldwide Visa-Free Travel

Even the most travel-friendly passports leave 20-odd countries beyond your visa-free reach. What is the lowest number of passports that, combined, give you visa-free travel to all the world’s countries?

Method and assumptions First, we’ve decided that, for the purposes of this analysis, we will define e-visa and visa-on-arrival as “visa-free”. Some readers may take issue with this broadened definition, and they are welcome to submit their own analysis based on more stringent criteria.

We took into consideration both the Henley & Partners Passport Index and the Arton Capital Passport Index . The former includes 227 territories, 28 of which are not countries. Since Arton’s index measures only countries, we have excluded H&P’s 28 non-country destinations from our analysis so as to enable apples-to-apples comparisons.

We started by considering the Japanese and United Arab Emirates passports because they are the two top-flight passports that have the least overlap between them in terms of the destinations covered (28 destinations offer visa-free access to one and not the other), making them highly complementary.

For example, the UAE has visa-on-arrival or e-visa access in many African countries where the Japanese need to apply in advance, while the reverse is true when it comes to Latin-America and Asia.

Where there were discrepancies between the two indices – where one indicates neither the Emirati nor the Japanese passport need visas to visit a particular country, while the other indicates one or both of them do – we have given that passport the benefit of the doubt. This was the case in the following instances:

• Arton’s index says Emirati passport holders have visa-free/e-visa/visa-on-arrival access to Burkina Faso, Burundi, DR Congo, Niger, and South Sudan, while Henley’s index states this is not the case.
• Arton’s index says both the UAE and the Japanese passports have visa-on-arrival in Nigeria, while Henley says neither do.

Getting to 100% Between them, the Emirati and Japanese passports grant visa-free travel to all but 10 of 199 countries (remember, we are not including non-country territories like St. Helena, Guam, or French Polynesia).

With just two passports, then, it’s possible to visit about 95% of the world’s destinations.

The remaining countries – those to which neither the UAE nor Japan have visa-free access – are:

• Afghanistan
• North Korea
• Turkmenistan

The question then becomes; what is the lowest number of additional passports needed to cover the rest?

To answer that question, we start by looking for passports that can cross as many of the above countries as possible off the list.

No single country has visa-free access to more than two of the remaining countries. Those who hold a Ugandan, Sudanese, or Ethiopian passport, however, may cross both Ghana and Eritrea off their visa restrictions list.

Only the citizens of two countries can visit Iraq without a visa. These are Lebanon and Turkey. Turks can also visit Libya visa-free, so adding a Turkish passport will help cross two countries off the list.

Turkmenistan and North Korea are only accessible visa-free by the nationals of one country each; Georgia and China, respectively. Georgians can visit Turkmenistan without a visa-application and the Chinese can visit certain limited parts of North Korea without a visa for a few days at a time. We’ll need both a Georgian and Chinese passport to cross a further two countries off the list.

Now, with six passports – Japan, UAE, Uganda/Sudan/Ethiopia, Georgia, China, and Turkey – the only countries still off-limits are:

Passport holders from only seven countries can visit Cameroon without a visa, none of which are among our current four nationalities, which means we’ll need to add another passport to our portfolio. Is there a passport that can cross off more than one of the four remaining countries? Yes, but only one; that of Mali, which has visa-free access to both Cameroon and Algeria. We’ll therefore add Mali to our list of passports.

With a repertoire of five passports – Japan, UAE, Uganda/Sudan/Ethiopia, Turkey, and Mali – only Afghanistan and Bhutan remain inaccessible.

Bhutan allows for freedom of movement for three countries only; India, Bangladesh, and the Maldives. Since none of those have access to Afghanistan, we can pick either one.

Now, Afghanistan is the toughest nut of all to crack. We regret to say that zero countries have visa-free access to Afghanistan for ordinary passport holders. The only exemptions are travelers born in Afghanistan, born to Afghan parents, or with parents born in Afghanistan.

The only way to reach 100% global visa-freedom, therefore, is to become Afghani yourself or be born in Afghanistan, or have Afghani parents.

Final tally To visit 100% of the world’s countries without first applying for permission, you’ll need the following nine passports:

• Uganda or Sudan or Ethiopia
• India or Bangladesh or the Maldives

If you are either Afghani, Turkmen, or North Korean, you can reduce that to eight.

Of course, other passport combinations are possible as well. Readers who can find a combination of passports that require fewer than nine to visit 100% of the world’s countries are invited to submit their analysis directly to the editor on [email protected].

However, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months before visiting. With around 39,000 inhabitants, it’s a quiet and serene place, perfect to heal your inner child. Once you’re done soaking up all the jaw-dropping beauty, you can visit the Ġgantija Megalithic temples or take a guided tour to see all the famous sites. For US nationals, a stay for up to ninety days is visa-free.

17. Giant’s Causeway, Ireland

The Giant’s Causeway is a stunning site formed millions of years ago due to a volcanic eruption. Staying in Ireland is visa-free for Americans for up to ninety days, so you have plenty of time to explore this wonder. The basalt columns form a pathway that will leave you in awe.

You can also see the gleaming waters stretching for miles from the top. There are spectacular hotels, hiking trails, and a visitor’s center.

18. Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

From San Pedro and its luxury resort, Sababa Resort, to San Marcos with its perfectly brewed coffee to paragliding over the lake, you won’t be bored. Stay there for up to ninety days without a visa.

19. Lake Retba, Senegal

30 km from the capital, Lake Retba is the most unique place you’ll visit. Unlike traditional lakes, the water here is pink. To experience this phenomenal site, you can take a boat and explore it up close. The color is a result of high salinity. You’ll also witness several women selling local jewelry, so be sure to check that out. As an American, visa-free travel lasts for up to ninety days here.

20. Palawan, Philippines

With over 1,700 islands, Palawan has gained much traction with tourists due to its jaw-dropping beauty and recreational activities. Whether you visit El Nido Park with limestone formations and kayaking, head towards Kayangan Lake for a rejuvenating swim, or even go diving in Coron Bay, filled with wreckage to explore, you’ll have a blast. While visa-free stay here is limited to thirty days, it’s plenty for a wholesome experience.

From family staycations to a couples retreat, The Cook Islands is a dream come true, and you can stay here for up to ninety days without a visa. Without visiting the local Punanga Nui Market marketplace, you’ll miss out on woodwork and art. Your itinerary should include a hike to Rarotonga and a tour of the villages where locals talk about their ancient myths and traditions.

Visa and passport. What should you bear in mind?

A month ago, I flew from Paris back to Baltimore full of despair: My vacation was over , and the trip home seemed to take an eternity .

Then I saw the snaking line for customs and immigration.

What could have sunk me into a deeper woe actually revived me, because I didn’t have to wait in that soul-sucking purgatory. I didn’t have to wait in the shorter but still well-populated Global Entry line, either.

Instead, I headed to a third option that most people miss: the Mobile Passport Control (MPC) line. Thanks to this secret national treasure, I was out of the airport and hailing my Uber in eight minutes. (I timed it.)

You, too, can experience this completely free VIP treatment the next time you fly internationally. Here’s how.

What is Mobile Passport Control?

Think of Mobile Passport Control like a fast pass for international travel. It’s a free service that allows select travelers to access a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) express lane with a smartphone app.

To be eligible, you must be a U.S. citizen, a lawful permanent resident, a Canadian B1/B2 citizen visitor or a returning Visa Waiver Program traveler with approved Electronic System for Travel Authorization.

You can use the app only when returning from an international trip at an MPC-approved site . That includes more than 30 U.S. international airports, 14 pre-clearance locations (among them airports in Abu Dhabi, Aruba and Ireland) and four seaports.

Why don’t more people use it?

Although you’ll see signs promoting Mobile Passport around those sites and sometimes ads on in-flight entertainment systems, most people aren’t taking advantage of the service. Just 8 percent of eligible travelers used the app in the 2024 fiscal year, according to CPB spokesman Aaron Bowker, though that’s a 50 percent increase from the year before.

The company Airside Mobile originally developed the app and launched it in 2014, first at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Awareness of its powers seemed to spread mostly by word of mouth and some signs around airports. In 2022, CBP officially took over the app, launching an updated version that left the original defunct. Some travelers missed the memo and figured the service had been discontinued when their app no longer worked.

But CBP is invested in the program’s growth.

“We’ve expanded the population of travelers that are able to use it. We’ve started to educate the airports. Airports have started to put in a better queuing system,” Bowker said. “And so we’re expecting to see this continue to increase.”

How Mobile Passport works

First, download the Mobile Passport app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store . Unlike line-cutting services such as Global Entry or TSA PreCheck , MPC doesn’t require preapproval or an application process. Even if you forget to do it before your trip, it’s so quick to set up, you can install it as you’re walking up to customs.

When it’s time to pass through, eligible travelers can fire up the app, answer the standard few questions about their trip that they would at a customs kiosk, take a selfie and proceed to a dedicated Mobile Passport lane, where an officer will confirm their details and wave them through. Individual travelers and families of up to 12 people can use the app at once.

It makes me feel like a fancy diplomat — not someone who just spent 12 hours in economy — every time I use it.

Mobile Passport vs. Global Entry

Mobile Passport and Global Entry both promise a faster airport experience. Both also come with pros and cons.

One MPC downside: Although it’s free to use and rarely has a line of more than a few travelers, it’s not at every airport. And Mobile Passport lanes may not always be available even in places that claim to offer it.

CBP spokeswoman Corey Daboin said the agency is aware of that problem. Sometimes, issues are due to infrastructure constraints — some airports may not have the lanes available to operate MPC continuously — or management. The agency stresses, however, that Mobile Passport is a priority, and “we are working on making that so it’s not an issue moving forward,” Daboin said.

If you fly internationally and your home airport doesn’t have MPC yet, Global Entry is a great option. It does cost $100 and requires an application and interview process. But it also comes with a TSA PreCheck membership and is good for five years — plus it’s still light-years better than waiting in that endless regular line.

Make an Appointment at a Passport Agency

Our passport agencies and centers :

• Process all applications we receive from acceptance facilities and by mail, and
• Serve customers by appointment only who have urgent travel to a foreign country in the next 14 calendar days, or need a foreign visa in the next 28 calendar days

The U.S. Department of State runs each passport agency and center. An agency and center is different than acceptance facilities which may include post offices, libraries, and local government offices.

Avoid the stress of needing to visit a passport agency or center for urgent travel. Apply early at an  acceptance facility  or  renew by mail .

Steps to Make an Appointment for Urgent Travel

Follow these steps to make an appointment:

• Go to our  Online Passport Appointment System .
• Enter information about your travel plans to see if you qualify for an appointment. You may make an appointment for up to seven members of your household.
• Enter your email address. We will email you a code which you must enter to continue making an appointment. Check your junk or spam folder if you do not see the code in your inbox.
• Enter your mobile phone number. We will send you a text message with another code you must enter to continue making an appointment.
• Complete the process of scheduling your appointment. 
• Check your email for a message confirming the details of your appointment. The system will hold your appointment for 15 minutes. If you do not confirm your appointment within 15 minutes, you will need to start over.
• If you need to cancel or change the appointment, click the link in the confirmation email to get information about your appointment.

• Call  1-877-487-2778  from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Mondays through Fridays, or on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Se habla español. 

If you are deaf or hard of hearing, call  1-888-874-7793  for TDD/TTY teletype services. 

• We will provide you unique information that we will check on the day of your appointment to confirm your appointment is legitimate. If you are not the appointment holder, the passport agency or center will not be able to see you.
• If you need to cancel or change your appointment, please call us. We will give your appointment to a new customer calling to make an appointment. You cannot transfer your appointment.

The first two digits of your nine-digit passport application locator number allow you to know which agency or center is working on your application. You can find your application locator number by checking our Online Passport Status System . 

How and when should I contact a passport agency or center by mail?

You can find an agency or center's mailing address on each agency or center webpage. You can contact our locations by mail if:

We sent you a letter : If we need more information to process your application , we will send you a letter in the mail. Send the information to the full mailing address in Sterling, VA listed on your letter. Do not send information to the agency’s physical address.
