The Camino de Santiago – the Way of St. James – is the name of the pilgrimage route to the shrine of the apostle St. James in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, northwest Spain. Our tour begins in Pamplona (famous for the Running of the Bulls). Rolling through the storied hills of the Spanish Pyrenees, never-ending vistas of grapevines signal transition into the wine-rich region of Rioja. Sample from the Pilgrims’ Wine Fountain. Tour the Gothic cathedral in Burgos and the tomb of Spain’s most famous son, El Cid. Now ride into Castilla Leon: wide open plains, farmland, and grassy hills as far as you can see. Ride to Galicia’s mountains and forests near the end of your pilgrimage. Closer to Santiago, the number of pilgrims on the trail increases; they’ve been walking for a month! The awesome sight of the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela signals the completion of our adventure. Have a farewell dinner to celebrate and bid your fellow pilgrims “Buen Camino.” Lodging is included for this last night; sleep in, enjoy breakfast and then head to the airport on the 15th day.

Our May/June tour dates are best for wildflowers and green landscapes. September tours are best for the grape harvest, of course! Ask for our Guest Information Packet for more special information about how this pilgrimage ride differs from our other tours.

Luggage service is provided, but there’s no daily support van. We carry what we need for the day on our bicycles and we cycle on a variety of surfaces: single-track trails, gravel roads and pavement. The rental bikes are hard tail 29’er mountain bikes with front suspension, so some familiarity with off-road cycling is recommended.

*E-bikes: Electric-assist bicycles are available as an option for an additional $200.00 for the tour.

Ride Roncesvalles to Pamplona

Transfer to Roncesvalles on the French border in the Spanish Pyrenees. Head for the pilgrims’ office. Get your Pilgrim’s Passport and your first official Camino de Santiago stamp. Ride out of the mountains, through the village near where author Ernest Hemingway fished the streams for trout. Have lunch in Zubiri, next to the river where Martin Sheen drops his backpack into  The Way . Bicycle the paved path next to the river back to our starting point in Pamplona. Enjoy dinner in an unforgettable setting, hosted by Nunci, owner of Restaurant San Ignacio.

Ride out of the ancient city of Pamplona past the Town Hall, the start line for the running of the bulls. A ridgeline of windmills draws closer as we climb to the viewpoint at Alto de Perdo. Enjoy a long downhill all the way to Puente La Reina. Have lunch a bridge built by the Romans that has stood for well over a thousand years. Wind your way into Estella, through small towns and the beginnings of vineyards. Explore the town before savoring a dinner prepared by one of the most passionate chefs in all of Spain.

Ride up, down, and all around, dipping and diving through the vineyards of Rioja. Little pueblos spot the countryside; walkers scatter across wide-open fields. Storks nest on the church in  Los Arcos , signaling our picnic spot for lunch. Bicycle the paved trail into Logroño, lined with statues welcoming us and saluting the efforts of the ‘peregrinos’ (pilgrims.) Making your way out of the city of Logroño, take the trail past a popular fishing spot. Ride past a vineyard with an unusual scarecrow: a bird-of-prey sound machine to keep the crows away. Explore Navarette’s hilltop church , with a breathtaking surprise inside. Traverse the vineyards of a large regional co-op. Bask in the sun at the lunch stop in Najera, next to the river in the heart of town. Do your best not to overeat (good luck!). Tonight’s dinner in The Parador  in  Santo Domingo  de la Calzada – a former pilgrim’s hospital – is always stunning.

Take an epic route today: Santo Domingo to San Juan de Ortega sees the ecosystem change from grassy farmland to mountains and trees. Pass through Atapuerca, the UNESCO World Heritage site whose caves cradled the remains of the earliest-known human beings in Europe. Be welcomed by the high-plains city of Burgos and its over-the-top Gothic cathedral. Dinner is on your own tonight: The gravel-voiced waiter and his perfect steaks at Meson La Cueva come highly recommended.

Pedal wide gravel paths meandering across high plains. Skies as big as Montana’s occupy the horizon today and waves of grain and grass blanket the landscape. Ride through the massive and haunting remains of the Manasterio de San Antòn as we make our way to lunch in equally picturesque Castrojerìz – one of the most photographed places on the Camino. Follow a series of canals to another stop – “2nd lunch,” as we like to call it – in Fromista. The chocolate cake here is too good to miss! In the small town of Carrion de los Condes, we stay in a family-run hotel tonight and are treated like … well, family, of course!

Hit the halfway point in the journey just before lunch today. Watch birds of prey hunt over the cornfields as you pedal toward Leon. The high-speed train to Madrid zips by, full of people preparing to start their pilgrimage there. Stay right in the ancient city, just a couple of blocks from the cathedral. Ice cream shops beckon after a long day in the saddle. Feast on Italian fare tonight: the friendly staff at Baccolino will make you want to come back again every day for the rest of your life.

Enjoy Leon: The sights. The sounds. The shopping!

Enjoy a well-earned day off the bike in Leon. Shopping, massage, sightseeing, relaxing – all await today. It’s a fun city with centuries of history to explore. Spend the morning walking from cafe to cafe sampling coffee and pastries. Explore the city while doing a little shopping. Have lunch outside at a sidewalk cafe. Tour the cathedral in the afternoon. There’s lots fit in on this day off.

Leon to Rabanal del Camino

Back in the saddle, leave the city behind. Roll through Hospital de Orbigo with its well-preserved Roman bridge. Stop for lunch within sight of the cathedral in Astorga. The house next door – designed by famed Spanish Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi i Cornet – is one of his most beautiful private residences. Head into new scenery on the exit from town: lavender fields and mountain scrub trees. Spend tonight in the tiny town of Rabanal del Camino, with fewer than 100 year-round residents. Enjoy views of tomorrow’s mountains, beckoning from every window.

Start the morning with a brisk climb up to the  Cruz de Ferro , the highest point on the Camino de Santiago. Legend has it that if you add a stone that you’ve brought from home, you may leave your burdens here and prepare for rebirth on the remainder of your journey. Didn’t bring a stone from home? It’s okay to bring one from a little closer. Traverse the ridge line on the way to a stop at the colorful Refugio in Manjarin . Welcomed by a bunch of friendly dogs and cats, stop for a photo, and some refreshments. Enjoy the 20 kilometer downhill to lunch in  Molinseca . Visit one of the best-preserved Templar castles in the world in Ponferrada  before rolling through cherry orchards into  Villafranca de Bierzo .

Villafranca to Sarria

Ride the most mountainous day of the journey today. Begin with a mellow hour of cruising through a deeply-cut valley leading towards the pass. Settle in for the long steady climb up to Cebriero. What a feeling of accomplishment – and a healthy need for a hearty lunch! The three-course lunch at the top of the mountains will do the job nicely, thank you. Roll through the hills after lunch, past the Albergue in Triacastela, welcoming cyclists with a bicycle hanging on an exterior wall. Continue riding the path as it slices right through farms – with chickens running everywhere – on the way to the transportation hub of Sarria. Feeling brave?  A Fred Flintstone steak can be yours for dinner! Tonight’s restaurant specializes in char-grilling very ample portions to perfection.

Sarria to Melide

Deep in the heart of Galicia, the hills are a mixture of forests and centuries-old family farms separated by stacked rock fences. The scent of eucalyptus fills the air; its bark and leaves blanket the trail. Portomarin, our lunch town, sits on top of a hill next to a former lake that is now a lush valley. Stay tonight in Melide, just a short 52 kilometers from tomorrow’s destination, the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

Costa Vella

You’re almost there! The feeling of enthusiasm is palpable. Cross several small stone bridges over tiny streams on today’s journey. Eucalyptus forest thickens, shading the trail as you near the final hill up to the airport. The last few miles seem endless – then suddenly you arrive at the John Paul II Monument at Monte do Gozo. This signals the first glimpse of the city. Get your final stamp here, then coast downhill into Santiago. The square in front of the cathedral is alive with activity. Your fellow pilgrims arriving there congratulate each other and take photos. Set your bike down for a bit. Take time to explore the cathedral – final stop on your journey – while the guides head to the Compostela Office to get your certificate for completing the Camino de Santiago. Our farewell dinner will be filled with toasts and tales of The Way. Buen Camino, Amigos! Tonight’s lodging at Costa Vella is included.

Sleep in, enjoy a leisurely breakfast and then head to the airport anytime you wish.

The over all experience was fine, excellent hotels, first class bikes and the navigation system fairly good. My negative comments are the information flow and guidence, especially in the beginning, how to check in to the tour, the reception and so forth. We had expected ore formally start and some advice according to this special route. It was a need for this in relation to utility of battery function and consuming of power. We had some problems in the Tramuntana, near Sierra de Tramuntana, ran out of electricity and a little help to get from the organizer. We had the general feeling in the tour that we were more or less on our own. That can also be good

Cycling In Spain: The 7 Most Incredible Routes for Bike Touring

As a pair of Dutch girls, I guess we can say that cycling is more or less in our blood! Our adventures have taken us around the world, and more often than not, we’ve enjoyed the sights from the saddle of our trusty bicycles. However, I’ve got to say that bike touring in Spain for a month was one of my favorite bicycle trips of all time!

Cycling in Spain is perhaps the best way to see this incredible country. The sleepy, rustic villages shouldn’t be rushed through, and riding through the beautiful sunshine through the awesome scenery is pure joy! There are a number of official bicycle tours in Spain, with well-signed routes traveling along mostly vehicle-free tracks.

Plus, the weather is almost always gorgeous, with long sunny days well into autumn. It’d be amazing to do a full bike tour of Spain if time allowed, and it’s something we’ve dreamed of! But, for something a little more manageable, the following 7 bike touring routes in Spain are absolutely spectacular.

So, saddle up and let’s find out more!

1. Ruta De La Plata (The Silver Route)

• Total distance: 936 km (582 miles)
• Total elevation: 20,954 m (68,750 ft)

Also known as the Way of St. James, this is an astounding route for soaking up both sunshine and a little Spanish history. Passing through breathtaking scenery, the route travels south to north, through western Spain, from Seville up to Gijón on the Bay of Biscay. It follows one of the oldest Roman trade routes in the country, taking in a number of charming, historic towns and villages.

Along the way, there are countless opportunities to spend a day out of the saddle, exploring ancient ruins, castles, churches, and amphitheaters. The route follows cycle paths for much of the way and, for the most part, avoids busy roads entirely. Passing through calm, rolling countryside with some climbing along the way, you don’t have to be super fit to complete the route. However, you’ll probably enjoy it more if you’ve done a little training in advance.

With plenty of charming cities and towns to stop off at along the way, you can really take your time with this route. It can normally be completed within 9 days of around 100 km (60 miles) each, though it’s easy to break it down or speed it up. There’s a slightly different version of this trail, which converts it into a pilgrim’s route leading to Santiago rather than Gijón.

2. Camino de Santiago

• Total distance: 361km (225 miles)
• Total elevation: 6,337 m (20,800 ft)

This classic pilgrim’s route is among the oldest cycling routes in Spain . Crossing the north of the country from east to west, the route starts in the beautifully Gothic León. From this stunning start point, the route winds through unspoiled countryside, taking in villages, farms, and medieval monasteries, before culminating in the legendary Santiago.

Along the way you’ll follow the iconic seashell signs as they direct you through a mixed terrain of quiet minor roads, designated cycle routes, and the occasional off-road section. The rural countryside is pretty hilly, and you’ll need a fair level of fitness to enjoy it to the max. However, it’s possible to complete the trip in 6 moderate days, averaging around 54 km (33.5 miles).

The scenery along the route is as magnificent as it is varied, taking in grassy plains, woody mountains, lush green valleys, and rolling farmlands. There are also plenty of opportunities to explore the local area and enjoy the delicacies of the region, from tasty wines to moreish local cheeses.

3. Mallorca Coast to Coast

• Total distance: 100 km (147 miles)
• Total elevation: 1,580 m (5,183 ft)

Mallorca is a stunningly beautiful island to go cycling in Spain and perhaps best known for its luxurious sandy beaches. However, there’s much more to discover on this Paradise Island, and this cycling route takes in all of the best sights. It offers a wonderful mix of coastal areas and the inland foothills of the Tramuntana mountains.

With tons of amazing family-run hotels and guesthouses on the island, it’s easy to adapt the route to your preference, with a fantastic place to stop each night. Most of the going is flat, on quiet, tarmac routes, with the occasional off-road sections. But take care on the couple of steep climbs you pass. Most days you can enjoy around 40 km (25 miles) of leisurely cycling, with plenty of time to enjoy the sights.

The route typically starts from the airport and ends in the beautiful cap Formenta. In between, you’ll visit sleepy rural villages, tranquil beaches, and cycle through unspoiled countryside. Mountain views abound, even though there are no real climbs on this route.

4. the way of el cid.

• Total distance: 1,100 km (685 miles)
• Total elevation: 18,740 m (61,480 ft)

You’ll be cycling in the footsteps of legends on this incredible Spanish cycle route. Rodrigo Diaz, or El Cid, was a medieval knight in the 11th century, and remains a national hero. This cycle route follows his epic journey from Burgos to Valencia, crossing through an amazingly varied landscape. 

Along the way you’ll ride through quaint, medieval villages, unspoiled countryside, mountains and valleys, and conquer hilltop fortresses. The main route takes in 1,100 km (685 miles), but there are a number of interesting side routes that are worth considering if you have time. These circular routes take in various additional historic sights and majestic landscapes, and increase the total route to around 2,000 km (1,245 miles).

There are actually 2 different routes you can take; the paved route, or the mountain bike route. Both are well signed, and avoid busy roads for the most part. Mostly the going is easy to moderate, with the occasional climb. There are plenty of places to stop along the way, and you can split the journey up as it suits you, with 5 to 6 days being the average time taken.

5. Vía Verde (de la Sierra)

• Total distance: 36.5 km (23 miles)
• Total elevation gain: 1,261m (4,135 ft)

Roughly translated to ‘green lanes’, the Vias Verdes stretch for more than 2,200 km in total, all across Spain. After countless failed railway projects, the old tracks were converted into 120 of these impressive routes. They’re well signed, mostly flat, and easily accessible for everyone from hikers and cyclists, to horse riders and even wheelchair users.

When cycling in Spain, they’re a fantastic place to meet fellow travelers, and offer up incredible scenery that takes in everything Spain has to offer. From medieval cities to humble rural villages, through mountain passes to lush green valleys, the green lanes guarantee an incredible adventure.

One of the best routes for cyclists is the Vía Verde de la Sierra from Olvera to Serrano. This fairly easy-going 36.5 km (23 mile) trail takes in 30 tunnels, 4 incredible viaducts, and various medieval villages. The route from Olvera is mostly flat or downhill, making it an easy trail for beginners.

6. Col de Puymorens

• Total distance: 176 km (109 miles)
• Total elevation: 4,144 m (13,595 ft)

This breathtaking looped route takes you on an adventure through the glorious Pyrenees. Winding through the gorgeous Catalonian landscape, you’ll dip briefly into France, before returning to the small Catolonian villages and towns. It’s possible to cycle on paved roads, as well as mountain bike tracks, but both are largely free of motorized traffic.

As such, it’s a peaceful and enjoyable route to cycle, and while there are inclines, there’s nothing too hard going. For the most part, the route is fairly moderate and anyone with a pretty good level of fitness should be okay.

Along the way, you’ll enjoy a wealth of charming towns and villages, and for foodies, incredible cuisine and wine (there are 18 Michelin Star restaurants in the region). The route is well-signed and open throughout the year, though spring and autumn are the best times to visit. There are also plenty of opportunities to leave the official route and explore the surroundings.

7. The Tour of Andalusia Route

• Total distance: 267 km (166 miles)
• Total elevation: 6,733 m (22,089 ft)

This route is fantastic for cycling in Spain and gives you the opportunity to see the treasures of Andalusia in the south of Spain. An area famed for sandy beaches, desert landscapes, gorgeous towns, and awe-inspiring sierras. The route starts in the small town of Malaga, a cultural crossroads and the southernmost point of the Iberian Peninsula. After exploring Andalusia’s inland gems, you’ll return to the coast, with the route ending in another country: Gibraltar.

Along the way you’ll enjoy breathtaking scenery at almost every turn. Highlights include Ronda, an absolutely stunning mountaintop town, and epic national parks including Sierra de Grazalema. There are plenty of places to stop along the way, and incredible food and drink to enjoy.

The route is quite hard-going at times, with long, steep climbs. A good level of fitness is recommended to enjoy it to the fullest. However, it’s worth the effort, and the rewards are absolutely incredible!

Spanish cycling holidays: where to go cycling in Spain (and why)

Spanish cycling holidays are extremely popular, with many thousands of cyclists visiting the country each year.

But Spain is more than twice the size of the United Kingdom. How do you work out which part is best for your cycling holiday to Spain?

Are you better off in the Sierra Nevada or the Sierra de Cazorla, Calpe or Girona?

In this article we take you on a trip around mainland Spain, sharing insights on what to expect from the cycling in each area.

Overview of Spain

It’s easy to think of Spain as a country with golden beaches and warm weather wherever you go. In fact, the country is very diverse in terms of its geography, culture and weather.

For example, after Switzerland, it’s the second most mountainous country in Europe. It’s even a skiing destination, with high mountain peaks in the Sierra Nevada, Pyrenees and the Sistema Central and Sistema Iberico.

In the north of Spain, above the Cantabrian mountain range, the areas of Pais Vasco (Basque Country), Asturias, Cantabria and Galicia have a maritime climate consisting of mild winters and cool summers with frequent cloud and rainfall. The north coast weather can be quite unsettled as it is subject to the weather fronts in the Bay of Biscay which can often bring in copious amounts of wind and rain.

To the south of Spain, there is the more expected Mediterranean feel to the weather. Areas in the south east, such as the province of Murcia, actually have an African style climate with low rainfall and 320 plus days of annual sunshine.

By way of example, the average temperature in Granada at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, in the south of the country, during the month of July is 34 degrees whereas in the Province of Asturias on the north coast the same monthly average is 23 degrees.

Reasons to go on a Spanish cycling holiday

Opportunities for cycling in Spain are almost endless!

There are Spain bike tours that will take you through the mountains or tours through the flatlands, in lush verdant countryside or in barren deserts.

Pick your destination right and you can also ride in summer clothing when most of Europe is shivering in the cold.

Bike trips in Spain provide something for every fitness level too; whether you just want to explore the country at a leisurely pace along the Via Verdes (cycling greenways on old disused railway lines), want to ride the coastline or fancy a crack at a fearsome Vuelta a Espana climb.

Other things that make a cycling holiday in Spain appealing include plenty of available hotel accommodation (particularly along the ‘costas’ and main centres), a friendly tourist-centric culture and great transport links.

Best regions for Spanish cycling holidays

The main Spanish cycling tour destinations tend to be the ones that feature mountains or ones with good roads on undulating terrain. A lot of Spain is flat and whilst road surfaces are generally far better than you find in the UK, cycling holidays, tours and races tend to gravitate towards the higher ground.

If you enjoy cycling in the sunshine then a cycling holiday in southern Spain is a good bet. Whilst the temperatures are still far warmer than northern Europe, generally speaking the further north you go in Spain, the cooler it gets. (You’ll have read more on that in the section above ).

To make planning for your Spain cycling holiday a little easier, we have split the country into five geographic regions. We start in the south and go anti-clockwise, up the east coast, along the north coast and then down to Madrid in the centre.

Andalucía is the largest region of southern Spain (and the second largest in the country). Cycling holidays in Andalucía are extremely popular.

The stunning Sierra Nevada mountain range and the area around the Tabernas desert provide some of the most challenging and scenic routes in Spain.

The smaller mountain ranges of the Sierra de Grazalema and Sierra Cazorla are also popular haunts and as you move further east you find the flatter lands of Murcia and the undulating terrain of Calpe.

The historic cities of Granada, Cordoba and Sevilla are all within reach for a day off the bike so that you can immerse yourself in the history and culture of this part of the world.

Sierra de Grazalema

Lying inland, and south east of Seville, the Sierra de Grazalema isn’t the most well-known cycling destination in Spain. However, if you are looking for somewhere quiet and surrounded by natural beauty, then this may be the place for you.

There are some long climbs and plenty of undulating terrain all set in what can be best described as typical rural Spain. The rolling landscape is punctuated with small, white-stoned villages (pueblos blancos) and acre upon acre of citrus and oak trees. These make for a very pleasant experience whether you are riding seriously or just ambling along for leisure.

Famous climbs

The most popular climb in the region is probably the Puerto de las Palomas, which is located near to the Embalse de Zahara – el Gastor (reservoir).

Places to stay

Sierra Nevada

Moving east from the Sierra de Grazalema, is the Sierra Nevada National Park. It is the second highest mountain range in Europe after the Alps.

Located near to the city of Granada, the area is simply stunning; torrential rivers give way to sheer-sided gorges, scree slopes and glacial lakes. Whilst hundreds of thousands of acres of cultivated terraces of fruit and vegetables nestle below sun kissed and snow-capped peaks.

The Sierra Nevada is home to the highest paved road in Europe, which peaks at a staggering 3,396 metres at the summit of Pico Veleta. However, many cyclists will find themselves having to turn around just after the barrier at 2,550 metres at Hoya de la Mora, as the final 13 kilometres are often under snow.

Don’t be surprised to see the World Tour professionals on these roads as many train and stay at the National Altitude Training and Performance Centre, the Centro de Alto Rendimiento (CAR), which is a couple of kilometres from the barrier at Hoya de la Mora in the ski village of Pradollano.

The climb to Hoya de la Mora (2,550 metres altitude) and on the southern side, the climb to the mountain village of Trevelez which sits at 1,500 metres, both make for amazing rides.

Sierra de Cazorla

Further inland, north of the Sierra Nevada and to the west of the city of Jaen, lies the Sierra de Cazorla National Park. It is one of the biggest national parks in Europe. As a UNESCO world heritage site, it is a very popular destination for walking, camping, bird watching, climbing and cycling.

This area is not as popular as many other Spanish cycling destinations but it’s almost traffic free in parts and provides some stern climbing tests, such as the Collado de la Traviesa and the Agua de los Perros.

Tabernas Desert area

Heading back towards the coast, around 30 kilometres north of the coastal resort of Almeria lies the Tabernas desert which, as well as being famous as the setting for many Spaghetti western films, also lies close to two of the best climbs in the area.

The Alto de Velefique, or the Spanish Alpe as it is known locally, is a stunning climb. It has no less than 20 switchbacks (one less than its French counterpart and is of a very similar distance and gradient).

Nearby the ascent to the giant observatories at Calar Alto is a monster of a climb of over 30 kilometres at around 7% gradient taking you to over 2,000 metres in elevation. Besides the giant Observatory buildings at the summit you can literally see for miles.

The nearby Sierra los Filabres mountain range provides many additional cycling routes including the lovely ascent of the Puerto de la Virgen near Cobdar. If you’re thinking of a cycling holiday in southern Spain in the winter then look no further.

Our guide to cycling in/around Almeria

An hour or so east of Tabernas (by car) and north of Almeria, lies the coastal town of Mójacar. The nearby holiday resort of Mójacar Playa has plentiful accommodation and beautiful golden beaches. This area has some of the best cycling in Spain, particularly if you are looking for winter cycling and you have a car so you can get out to the Tabernas Desert area too.

Home to the relatively new Gran Fondo Costa Almeria, this is the perfect location for those that want to mix cycling with sunbathing. In cycling terms this part of the world is something of a hidden gem with its super smooth roads, minimal traffic and gorgeous weather and scenery.

You can ride along the coast towards Agua Amarga and enjoy the delights of the Parque Natural del Cabo de Gata-Nijar or head inland to test yourself on the climbs of the Sierra Bedar, El Chieve and the Puerto de la Virgen.

Mójacar Playa

South east coast of Spain

The town of Calpe, in the south east corner of Spain, is one of the most popular winter training destinations in Europe. Professional teams wanting to get in those early season miles and enthusiastic amateurs just wanting to pedal in the sunshine have been coming here for years.

Handily placed an hour’s drive from the airport at Alicante, cycling holidays in Calpe provide excellent value for money with plentiful accommodation at reasonable prices during the autumn and winter months.

The area has some mid-range mountains and plenty of undulating terrain on quiet roads with good surfaces.

Throw in year round sunshine, some beautiful beaches and a flourishing cycling culture and you can see why the area is so popular; combine a break in the sun with a Costa Blanca cycling holiday!

The Vuelta a España visits the area quite frequently, with the ascents of Cumbre del Sol, Coll de Rates, Vall d’Ebo, Alto de Confrides and the Puerto de Tudons all being popular haunts for the climbers.

Calpe, Denia

The province of Murcia gets an impressive 320+ days of sunshine each year and has a reputation for being one of the warmest areas of Spain. Boosted by this and the opening of a new international airport, the area is slowly becoming a magnet for those who want to cycle in the sun but who also want to get away from the crowds.

Home to the Spanish icon Alejandro Valverde, Murcia is relatively flat. However there are also a number of climbs such as the stunningly beautiful Sierra Espuna (set in a national park), the Cresta del Gallo and Cabezo de la Plata which will all test the legs.

There is plenty of accommodation available on the coast, particularly in the town of Los Alcazares, which sits by the huge Mar Menor lagoon. The nearby 5 star resort at La Manga Club is close to the historic port city of Cartagena and is also popular.

So if you want to get away from it all, cycle on good quality roads in glorious weather and prefer relatively flat terrain, then take a close look at Murcia.

North east coast of Spain

Girona and the costa brava.

Some would argue that Girona is the cycling capital of Europe – although Majorcan cycling fans would perhaps disagree!

What can’t be disputed is that so many professional cyclists choose this area as their home. Indeed some World Tour teams have their service courses based in the city.

If you go out for a couple of hours in Girona and don’t see a professional cyclist or two training on the local roads, it’s unusual. Not surprising then that Girona cycling holidays are so popular!

The climate in this part of the world is perfect for cycling between March and November but like most parts of Spain in the summer months it can be really hot. Fortunately the quaint fishing villages along the nearby Costa Brava coastline can provide respite.

The terrain is generally flat around the city with the exception of the famous Els Angels climb, which from the monastery at the summit, affords terrific views of both the city and the distant Pyrenean mountain range.

Further afield are the tougher ascents of Mare de Deu del Mont and the world renowned climb of Rocacorba.

To the north west of the city lies the Garrotxa National Park and the foothills of the Pyrenean chain. There are some wonderful opportunities here to ride on almost deserted roads amongst beautiful verdant meadows and woodland in what is best described as rural Spain.

If it’s mountains you want to climb, then the ascent to Vallter ski station takes you to more than 2,000 metres whilst the sinuous Coll de la Creueta, near the beautiful town of Ripoll, peaks at 1,925 metres. A hidden gem is the climb to the Santuari del Far near the town of Olot which at the top provides a view that simply has to be witnessed to properly appreciate.

Further north and west and about an hour or so’s drive from the Coll de la Creueta, is the small principality of Andorra which sits in the middle of the Pyrenees mountain range and has a land border with both France and Spain.

In recent years due to the advantageous taxation laws, the superb quality of the roads and the multitude of long mountain climbs many professional cyclists have chosen the area as their home.

The climb to the summit of the Port d’Envalira which has been used in both the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España tops out at 2,407 metres. There are a handful of other peaks that go over 2,000 metres, so this is an ideal place to come for altitude training.

Costa Daurada

The resorts of Salou and Cambrils sit on the Costa Daurada, a strip of Mediterranean coastline and quiet inland hills, medieval villages and vineyards, between Barcelona and Tarragona.

The area is relatively new to the cycling scene but working hard to build a reputation. Primarily an area popular with family holidays, it has a lot going for it when you consider the easy access from the airport at Barcelona. You’ll find golden sandy beaches, quiet roads and of course sunshine.

A couple of World Tour teams have used the area as a training base in recent years and, whilst it doesn’t have the cachet of Girona, it is undoubtedly an option to consider.

The nearby cities of Tarragona, and of course Barcelona, are an added benefit providing plenty to do and a wealth of facilities when off the bike.

The terrain is relatively flat and ideal for those pre-season base miles or for groups with mixed cycling abilities. There is no shortage of climbs in the nearby Serra de Llaberia, Serra de Montsant and Muntanyes de Prades areas.

Cambrils, Salou

Our guide to cycling in the Costa Daurada . If Costa Daurada is of interest, you should also read about Catalonia’s  Terres de l’Ebre region, just to the south of Costa Daurada. It’s even less known by cyclists than Costa Daurada, but it’s incredibly beautiful.

North coast of Spain

This part of Spain is very mountainous and these mountains are the main reason why the Vuelta a España visits each year.

The coastal regions experience a fair amount of wind and rain, particularly in the winter months, which leads many to refer to this area as ‘Green Spain’.

Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and Pais Vasco (Basque Country)

There are four regions running along the northern coastline of Spain namely Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and Pais Vasco (Basque Country).

West of Bilbao, in the Asturias and Cantabria regions, lies the Picos de Europa National Park. It’s not nearly as well known as the Alps and Pyrenees but it’s hugely beautiful and is known as being quiet from a traffic perspective. You’ll find limestone mountains, deep gorges, ancient forests and  traditional villages. The area is also famous for its caves where the remains of ancient man have been discovered.

The climbs in this part of the world tend to be of medium length but savagely steep and can even test the ability of the very best professionals.

It’s here you can find the classic ascent of the Lagos de Covadonga, which regularly features in the Vuelta.

The iconic climb of Alto de l’Angliru (Asturias) and Alto de los Machucos (Cantabria) have both become legendary within cycling circles due to their brutal 20% plus inclines.

There are too many famous climbs in this part of the world to mention, but the ascents of Fuente Dé and Pena Cabarga (Cantabria), La Farrapona and Puerto de Somiedo (Asturias), Puerto de Ancares (Galicia) and the Monte Oiz, Arrate and Jaizkibel in the Basque region are all worth checking out.

San Sebastian, Bilbao, Oviedo

Navarra and Aragon

Further to the east and bordering France are the provinces of Navarra and Aragon.

Navarra is a cycling hotbed with Movistar having their service course in the region. Navarra’s most famous son is the legendary Miguel Indurain.

Sitting right up against the southern flank of the Pyrenees is Aragon and, as you would imagine, there are some long mountain climbs in the area.

The Quebrantahuesos Gran Fondo is one of most famous Spanish biking events in the Spanish cycling calendar. It’s based in this part of the world and incorporates the climbs of the Portalet and Somport during its 200 kilometre circular loop.

Running along some of the northern provinces are the Camino Santiago routes created and made famous by pilgrim travellers in the 12th century. There remain many routes suitable for both walking and cycling including the famous Camino Frances.

Starting in St Jean Pied de Port just over the border in southern France the route heads south into Spain and passes through the cities of Pamplona, Burgos and Leon until it concludes, after 790 kilometres, in Santiago in the north western province of Galicia.

Arguably the most well-known climb in the area is the ascent to Port Larrau.

Central Spain

Madrid area.

Travel 100 kilometres north from Spain’s capital and you will find the Sierra de Guadamarra mountain range, which is a very popular haunt for cycling Madrileños.

The Vuelta a Espana during its last week, en route to the finish in Madrid, often spends a couple of days in the area which straddles both the community regions of Madrid and Castilla y Leon.

The mountain passes of Navacerrada, Morcuera and Canencia rise to between 1,500 – 1,900 metres in altitude all providing stern tests.

If you fancy something really high the Bola del Mundo climb near Collado Villalba tops out at 2,257 metres.

• It is advisable to carefully check in advance the route for cafes, restaurants and petrol stations. It is not uncommon when riding in some areas to go a couple of hours without seeing anywhere that sells food or drink, sometimes you won’t see a car for an hour!
• As you can sometimes be cycling in remote and extremely hot conditions you need to have a sound refuelling strategy in place before you set off.
• Similarly in some rural and mountainous areas there is a distinct lack of good accommodation. You may need to stay in a hotel several kilometres away from your preferred riding area and travel by car to a given point.
