Travel Guides: The extraordinary adventures of ordinary travellers

Profile picture of Scott Ellis

Seven years ago, an unsuspecting teenager named Dorian was hanging out in his local kebab shop with two mates discussing a trip away. The trio – Kev, Teng and himself – had bonded while working at the local shopping centre and were thinking a holiday in Bali or Thailand could be fun. Then Kev dropped a bombshell none of them knew was about to change their lives.

“Kev mentioned he’d seen an online ad offering free travel for participants in a new TV show called Travel Guides ,” Dorian, now 27, tells TV WEEK . “We sent in an audition video for a laugh, expecting to never hear back. Lo and behold, we did!”

dorian travel guides age

Kev saw an online ad for Travel Guides.

Before they knew it, the trio were on their way to New Zealand for rock-climbing, snowboarding and a U-Fly plane experience, where the pilot let the lads take the joystick and fly across the mountain.

“And this was just trip one out of 10 for that series – things only got crazier from there on!”

It’s a similar story for the Fren family, who were running a restaurant in Newcastle in NSW when a TV producer approached them, looking for chefs to appear in an upcoming cooking series.

“We were working together in a German family restaurant in 2011,” Mark, 62, tells TV WEEK . “A talent scout approached Cathy to apply for a cooking show, as so many people loved the family dynamics. That show was cancelled, but then Nine contacted about this new series coming to Australia, and the rest is history!”

dorian travel guides age

They’ve visited Africa, Asia, Europe and Australia.

The first trip for the family was to Queensland’s Gold Coast, a destination they’d visited before, but never in Travel Guides style.

“Staying at Palazzo Versace [the luxury hotel] was a dream come true,” Mark says. “We visited so many holiday hotspots. It turned out to be a great first episode for the Fren family.”

However, not so much for Sydneysiders Kevin and Janetta , who had worked in the travel industry for years before they applied for Travel Guides and were accepted.

“We were pumped and looking forward to some exotic destination – then, on the morning of the trip, the destination was revealed: the Gold Coast, ho hum,” he says with a laugh. “However, we then went on to Tokyo and Oman, so not all our dreams and expectations were dashed.”

That dream has well and truly come true for the accidental stars of Travel Guides ever since as they visited Africa, Asia, Europe and Australia in what has been, Dorian admits, “an incredibly wild ride”.

“We still pinch ourselves at how lucky we are to be given the opportunity to travel to so many places and see and do so many amazing things,” he says.

“We’ve been lucky enough to travel to more than 50 locations worldwide and, without sounding too preachy, I’d say this has really opened our eyes to so many different cultures and aspects of life.

“Hopefully, we’d like to think it’s made us a lot more open-minded overall. It’s just been amazing.”

And not just for the travellers. The wide-eyed, honest and often hilarious adventures of these TV tourists have turned Travel Guides into one of the most popular programs on television, regularly topping the ratings and winning TV WEEK Logie Awards for Most Popular Lifestyle Program in 2022 and 2023.

It’s turned the participants into stars, with Cathy Fren admitting she and her family are often recognised as they travel.

dorian travel guides age

“We still pinch ourselves at how lucky we are…”

“Mark usually gets the comment that he goes a little hard with the hair dye!” she says with a laugh.

Two participants who won’t be returning in 2024 are Stack and Mel, cowgirl twins from country NSW, who had been on the show since season one. This year, their younger brother Josh filled in for Mel while she focused on her family. Now, Stack has followed suit.

Filling their seats on the plane will be friends Karly and Bri, who are no strangers to TV, having met while filming last year’s season of Beauty And The Geek . Couple Matt and Brett, who joined the show in 2021, will be back in 2024.

And it’s sparked a career change for Dorian, who fell in love with television production and has now worked as a producer on Nine’s The Block, Emergency and the ABC’s Magda’s Big National Health Check . However, none of that is going to stop his first love: heading overseas with his mates.

“We’ve experienced so many unique things together in so many different and exotic places that are just unfathomable,” Dorian says. “We’ve definitely surpassed any form of a normal friendship.

“Maybe the day will come where we do grow sick of one another and want more of a normal, calm, settled-in-one-place kind of life, but for all three of us, that day is very far away. Right now, we never want to stop travelling the world together.”

Kevin is like-minded.

“Let’s face it, who wouldn’t want this gig?” he says. “You travel around the world with an adopted family and see things you’d never otherwise see. When travel stops being fun, we’ll stop travelling. Until then, it’s anchors aweigh!”

An opportunity to travel the world for free? Sign me up!

This is exactly what Travel Guides trio Dorian (24), Kev (28) and Teng (25) did after seeing a Nine Network casting ad posted to Facebook, while on the hunt for cheap flights to Bali.

“We thought it could be fun to maybe make a video and audition tape and send it in and we’ll never hear back from them,” Dorian said to The Greek Herald .

“All of a sudden we heard back from him three days later.”

The three good mates are former Target co-workers and budget travellers who share a love of junk food, computer games, music and movies. The trio made their first appearance in season 2 of the show and have continued their travel adventures this coming season (Season 4).

dorian travel guides age

Despite referring to themselves as “the three Asian boys”, Dorian comes from a Greek Australian family, with his yiayia arriving in Australia in the mid-to-late 60s and settling down in the Melbourne suburb of Oakleigh.

Despite his proud Greek heritage, Dorian never had the opportunity to visit Greece until he was sent there in 2019, unknowingly, by the Travel Guides producers.

“The thing that I love most is we never know what to expect, because we’re not told what country we’re going to go to until we rock up at the airport and we don’t know what activities we’re going to do until we rock up in the morning to film,” Dorian said.

“I was meant to go (to Greece) I think three times and always had to cancel last minute.”

In the series return, the trio, along with the other Travel Guides, take off on a Greek island-hopping holiday. Starting in the ancient capital, Athens, they hop aboard the ferry to the party island of Mykonos and the traditional island of Milos.

dorian travel guides age

Most Greek Australian families know that when they plan a trip to Greece, a visit to see the relatives is a high-end priority. However, under a tight schedule of only a week in Greece, Dorian said there was no time to visit his extended family.

The “three Asian boys” have collected many fans throughout the show’s airing, but none bigger than Dorian’s mum.

“Mom is our biggest fan,” Dorian said.

“I sort of can’t go to any supermarkets or anything without mum having told the people at the checkout that I’m going to be on the show tonight.”

“My whole family was super stoked. Obviously they wish we could have met relatives, but there just wasn’t any time and we weren’t in the right places, unfortunately.”

dorian travel guides age

To kick off the Greek holiday, the Travel Guides checked out the historical sites of Athens and, putting their own twist on history, they go for a few Olympic records of their own, with varying levels of success.

Leaving Athens they head to the party island of Mykonos, to which when Dorian was asked about the differences in the party scene between Greece and Australia, the Greek Australian said it “doesn’t compare”.

Back on the ferry, the travellers head for more stable shores. The best-kept secret in the Greek Islands awaits them on Milos, where white volcanic cliffs curve like marble into vivid blue seas.

But the party has also followed them to this traditional paradise, where it’s one of the biggest festival days of the year and the whole island has gathered to celebrate with bells on.

dorian travel guides age

Dorian revealed to The Greek Herald that Greece has been his favourite visited location on the show so far, with Athens’ history and beauty being a lifetime highlight.

“It’s the heart of everything, so much history there,” Dorian said.

“The people sort of reminded me of Oakleigh times 20; People calling out to each other on the street, walking around with their coffee, sitting at the cafes all day.”

“My least favourite moment was probably boarding a plane to leave.”

The fourth season of Travel Guides will premiere on Wednesday, April 28, on Channel 9.

New Holiday Makers Join ‘Travel Guides’ on the Most Amazing Series Yet

New Holiday Makers Join 'Travel Guides' on the Most Amazing Series Yet

Nine’s family favourite holiday program, Travel Guides, returns with more episodes, incredible destinations and two new faces on Tuesday, February 5.

The Fren family are back, along with twin cowgirls Stack and Mel, Kevin and Janetta, the Target boys Kev, Dorian and Teng – and now they’re joined by new holiday makers, the Melbourne newlyweds Deepesh and Sage.

Our five very different groups of ordinary Aussies become intrepid travel critics as they explore new destinations at home and overseas, including Hawaii, India, Argentina, Germany, Taiwan, Israel and The Philippines.

At each location they experience the same week-long holiday, sampling the food and accommodation, taking in the local sights, and ticking off a bucket list of adventures – from the wonderful to the weird and wacky. But each holiday shows that one person’s idea of paradise can be another’s idea of hell, as our Guides leave you in stitches with candid insights, then rate their stay out of five stars.

YOUR TRAVEL GUIDES

The Fren Family.  Mark (57), Cathy (55), Jonathon (27) and Victoria (25). These endearing bargain hunters run a German café in Newcastle, NSW. The Frens will stop at nothing to bag an upgrade and always find the funny side of any holiday disaster. They are willing to try anything at least once, and never afraid to speak their mind.

Kevin (61) and Janetta (67), the discerning holiday snobs. These married, jet-setting retirees seek out the finest accommodation, food and wine, and hate settling for anything second-rate.   Stack (29) and Mel (29), identical twin cowgirls from country NSW. Although a little wary when it comes to venturing anywhere beyond the Outback, they are prepared to give anything a crack. These competitive rodeo ropers are used to roughing it and not easily impressed by fancy holidays.

Kev (26), Dorian (22) and Teng (22), the three amigos who worked together at Target. Their combined Chinese, Greek and Vietnamese heritage gives them a unique take on the world. These budget travellers are smart slackers who are ready to leave the comforts of life at home with their parents to explore the world.    Deepesh (41) and Sage (39), who met online four years ago through the dating site RSVP and married in 2017. They share a love of adrenaline activities and consider themselves to be adventurous travellers. Avid photographers, oil painters and nature lovers, they are eager to see the world together. Deepesh is well travelled, while Sage has been to fewer countries.

Narrated by Aussie comedian Denise Scott, Travel Guides is produced in Australia by the Nine Network.

Last Resort of Good Men

Last Resort of Good Men is a companion quest for Dorian in Dragon Age: Inquisition .

Mother Giselle passed along the letter written by Dorian's father . Dorian may wish to read it, but it may be best just to take him to the tavern to sort this out in person.
  • 1 Acquisition
  • 2 Walkthrough
  • 7 References

Acquisition [ ]

The Inquisitor must have spoken with Dorian about a letter regarding Felix , which requires warm approval (35+) with him. Speaking with Mother Giselle at her usual location in Skyhold 's garden will cause her to go to the main hall. There, she asks for a moment of the Inquisitor's time, and eventually hands over a letter from Dorian's family.

Walkthrough [ ]

Upon speaking to Mother Giselle , she informs the Inquisitor that she has received a letter from Magister Halward Pavus , Dorian's father. He asks that she brings Dorian to a secret meeting, and that a "retainer" will be watching for them. (The letter is shown in the Gallery.)

The Inquisitor has the option of telling Dorian about the letter. If done so, a bit of extra dialog and a brief scene will play, without approval changes. However, at a later stage of the quest, a chance to gain approval is not given, if this option was chosen.

Whether he is aware of the meeting or not, entering the Gull and Lantern in Redcliffe Village , Hinterlands with Dorian will present a deserted tavern, and no "retainer" in sight. Instead Halward himself appears at the base of the stairs, and a discussion between father and son starts.

On several points the Inquisitor has a comment, even offering to leave, or might ask questions, until there's finally a dialog wheel with four choices that have an effect on the outcome of the quest and may change Dorian's approval . The first two (Don't leave it... / You didn't let him speak) is required for great approval and a debate of father and son, the second two (Let's get you out of here... / Are we done?) will leave them estranged and may result in no great approval at the end, depending on future dialog choices.

  • Don't leave it like this.

DAIApproval

  • Let's get you out of here.

The quest completes. In Skyhold, Dorian reflects on the events at the window of his alcove …

  • It worked out.
  • (Special) You led me on. (Female Inquisitor who had flirted with Dorian before this point.)
  • Just don't do it again. (ends scene)
  • I like flirting. (ends scene)
  • We can be friends. (ends scene)
  • (Romance) Good Things. (Male Inquisitor who had flirted with Dorian before this point; leads to a kiss.)
  • It was entertaining.

Rewards [ ]

  • Influence 400

Results [ ]

  • Dorian may or may not remain estranged from his father.
  • Dorian's tarot card will change to its alternate look.
  • There was a known issue that kept the quest from triggering if Dorian's approval rating became too high before discussing the fate of Felix. An essential dialog would be skipped, resulting in Mother Giselle never appearing in Skyhold's main hall with the letter. This bug was fixed in Patch 5.
  • If the quest is initiated but cannot activate the cutscene at Redcliffe Village's Gull and Lantern, enter the tavern with Dorian as the controlled character. [1] Another workaround is to save the game inside the Gull and Lantern, quit, and reload.

International travel documents for children

See what documents a child needs to travel to or from the U.S. alone or with a parent or relative.

Children traveling to the U.S.

All children, including infants, must have their own travel documents such as a passport or document from a Trusted Traveler Program to enter the U.S. If you travel or are going to travel with a child, consider taking the following documents:

  • If the child is traveling with only one of their custodial parents, they must have a letter of consent, preferably in English and notarized, from the other parent or signed by both parents. The letter should say "I acknowledge that my son/daughter is traveling outside the country with [the name of the adult] with my permission."
  • If one parent has sole custody of the child, a copy of the custody document can take the place of the other parent's letter.
  • Parents who frequently cross the border by land with a minor must always carry a letter of permission from the other parent.

U.S. citizen children traveling abroad

Ports of entry in many countries have security measures to prevent international child abduction . If you are traveling alone with your child, you may be required to present documentation proving you are the parent or legal guardian. You may also need a letter of permission from the other parent for your child to travel.

If your child travels alone, depending on the country, they may be required to present a notarized letter from both parents or their legal guardian. If a minor is traveling abroad and is not accompanied by both parents or a legal guardian, contact the embassy or consulate of the country you will be visiting and ask about entry and exit requirements for that country.

They shared a photo on their joint Instagram account of a property completely engulfed in flames and almost burnt to the ground, with Stack explaining it was her home in the post.

"Stack here! Can't bet this for a s--- start to the year, in the early hours of Sunday morning everything we owned my partner and the kids lost everything in a house fire that left only ashes, we are all safe and no lives lost just a reminder to everyone check your smoke alarms!" read the caption.

"We may have lost everything but we have each other and the clothes that were on the clothesline 🥰🥰🥰 #checkyoursmokealarms #timetorebuild #houseburntdown #startfromscratch #feelsorryforthekids #lostchristmaspresents #stackandmel".

Just over a week into 2022 and it's a gut-wrenching blow for Stack and her family, with followers flooding the post with their support.

Fellow Travel Guides stars Kevin and Janetta wrote, "Oh that's the worst news. Thinking of you."

Jono Fren commented, "So sorry to hear about this Stack. Glad everyone is okay but it is the worst way to start the new year.. @dani.fren21 and I are thinking you ❤️❤️❤️".

"Oh s--- Stacks I'm so so sorry to hear & see this.. Devastating but so glad everyone is ok.. If you need anything please shout out and hope you're doing alright & sending plenty of ❤️ & support," Cam Merchant commented.

The 31-year-old's farm was north of Tamworth, in Upper Horton in New South Wales.

Despite shooting to fame on a show that focuses on travel, the twins had a surprising outlook on things when COVID-19 hit.

"After this very funny year we didn't think we were going to be back on the road with all these border closures and not going anywhere, like we are so lucky to be back on the road," Mel said of how she's been travelling in a recent interview with 9Entertainment .

"It doesn't change on the farm. Cows have still got to be fed and they don't mind if the borders are shut."

If you use him as a dps fire mage + necro try pairing him with a support mage using Ice magic, and give both Ice Armor. As other said Dorian seems to stay close for one of his passives, so a support KE could be great, to have both stand in the frost aoe (added benefit is freeing ennemies meaning less damage taken).
