  • Trivia In Robert Bloch 's original script, a wealthy socialite named Margo hired the Enterprise to look for Doctor Korby, whom she greatly admired. In his script re-writes, Gene Roddenberry felt the role would be better filled by Korby's wife or fiancée, which would play well with the doctor's alleged intimate relationship with Andrea and his emotional coldness. Finally, he wrote the part to feature Christine Chapel, who was previously featured in The Naked Time (1966) (and was played by Roddenberry's lover, Majel Barrett ). In any case, money is no longer widely used, certainly not by the Federation, so it is hard to see how someone could hire the Enterprise.

Ruk was an android built on Exo III half a million years before the 23rd century by the Old Ones .

Ruk was tall, broad and immensely strong, capable of lifting a Human male easily with one hand. Despite his size, he could move silently and gracefully, making him an extremely dangerous physical opponent. He could duplicate voices effortlessly – his actual voice was very low-pitched and gravelly.

He was discovered in the underground ruins of that planet in 2261 , by Dr. Roger Korby , where he was still tending the machinery the Old Ones had left behind. Even he did not remember how many centuries he had been doing this work. Ruk helped Korby learn how to use the ancient machinery, including the android duplicator . With Ruk's help, Korby built other androids, including Brown and Andrea .

In 2266 , Captain James T. Kirk and Christine Chapel arrived at Exo III in search of Korby. By then, Korby had reprogrammed Ruk to serve him, and had devised a scheme to infiltrate android duplicates into society slowly and carefully. As part of that scheme, Korby and Ruk imprisoned Kirk and Chapel, and built a duplicate of Kirk to take control of the USS Enterprise .

Ruk killed two security officers named Mathews and Rayburn , who were beamed down to Exo III with Kirk and Chapel, but Korby claimed to his visitors this action was expressly against his orders.

Questioned about his origins by Kirk, Ruk remembered that the androids, presumably including himself, had become frustrated by the illogic and inferiority of the Old Ones. In turn, the Old Ones became frightened of their creations, and began turning them off. Their survival at stake, the androids overcame their programming and slew their makers. Once Ruk remembered this, he overcame Korby's programming the same way. No longer able to control Ruk, Korby destroyed him with a phaser blast. ( TOS : " What Are Little Girls Made Of? ")

Background information [ ].

Ruk was portrayed by Ted Cassidy . Additional voices mimicked by Ruk were provided by Majel Barrett , William Shatner , Michael Strong , and Sherry Jackson .

In the revised final draft script of "What Are Little Girls Made Of?", Ruk was characterized as a "huge, enormously tall, completely hairless half- Human creature ." He was also scripted to have a "heavy" voice. [1]

The book Star Trek: The Original Series 365 (p. 066) refers to Ruk as "a monster right out of the classic novel Frankenstein ." Ruk's facial appearance involved makeup designed by TOS Makeup Artist Fred Phillips . He emphasized the natural planes of Ted Cassidy's face with grease pencil and covered the actor's hair with a latex bald cap. The costume Cassidy wore as Ruk was designed by TOS Costume Designer William Ware Theiss . ( The Star Trek Compendium , 4th ed., p. 41)

Ruk appears on the cover of A Child's Garden of Lifeforms in Our Galaxy , a book that was designed by Doug Drexler for DS9 : " Time's Orphan ". ( Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion , p. 579)

Apocrypha [ ]

According to the novella " The Worst of Both Worlds ", the mirror universe James T. Kirk of the ISS Enterprise destroyed the last surviving member of the android society (presumably Ruk's mirror counterpart) on Exo III, who had likewise turned on their masters and killed them.

Specifics [ ]

Exo III was once a lush planet [4] until the system's star began to dim and temperatures on the planet got lower with each passing year . Formerly a class M [2] or class K silicate planet [3] , it eventually became glaciated with an average surface temperature of -50° Celsius . [2] ( TNG novel : Q-Strike , ST reference : Star Trek Maps , Decipher RPG module : Worlds )

History [ ]

The cooling was due to star's energy being drained by the One during his battle with Q . ( TNG novel : Q-Strike )

The population was forced to go underground, where they created androids to serve them. However, the androids developed self-awareness and killed their masters. Over the next 500,000 years the androids themselves began to wither away, and many put themselves in stasis until needed again, with Ruk tending to them. ( TOS episode & Star Trek 11 novelization : What Are Little Girls Made Of? )

In the late 22nd century , the planet was first charted by the Federation . ( Decipher RPG module : Worlds )

In 2261 , the Federation archaeologist , Dr. Roger Korby , and his assistant Dr. Aaron Brown , crashlanded on the planet. While Dr. Brown died, Ruk was able to rescue Dr. Korby, although he was badly injured. Korby became interested in the androids' capability to build androids and had an android duplicate of himself and Dr. Brown created, as well as a female associate named Andrea .

In 2266 , the USS Enterprise arrived at Exo III in an attempt to ascertain the location of Korby's expedition. After creating an android duplicate of Captain James T. Kirk in an attempt to spread the androids across the Federation, Korby's master plan was stopped. ( TOS episode & Star Trek 11 novelization : What Are Little Girls Made Of? )

Months after the first Exo III incident, Harry Mudd had learned about Exo III and the android manufacturing plant on it, and managed to join one of the Federation research teams that had been assigned to Exo III to study the technology of the Old Ones.

Using the original Andrea android template based on Andrea Milton , Harry created several hundreds more which he sold as entertainers to various worlds throughout the galaxy , including Wrigley's Pleasure Planet , as well as a number of Ruk androids which he used to capture the other Federation researchers.

In 2268 , on stardate 4991.3, Kirk and the Enterprise crew became aware of Harry's latest scheme and returned to Exo III to put an end to it. It led to a confrontation with the Ruk androids, who, like the original, sought to preserve themselves by killing Captain Kirk, Commander Spock , Doctor McCoy , Chief Engineer Scott , and Harry Mudd before they were destroyed by security personnel.

Soon after, Commander Spock and Lt-Com Scott shut down the android manufacturing plant permanently when Harry Mudd sought to create new Ruk models he could control. ( TOS - New Visions comic : " The Survival Equation ")

Later in 2268 , a second model of the Brown android who had not been present during first confrontation between the Enterprise crew and Roger Korby made another attempt at carrying out Dr. Korby's plan. After this plan was stopped as well, Exo III was abandoned. ( TOS novel : Double, Double )

In 2304 , Dr. Emil Vaslovik , Noonien Soong , and Ira Graves traveled to Exo III and rediscovered Dr. Korby's home on the planet. During their investigations, they accidentally released several androids left in stasis, and they spend several decades examining the wreckage of Dr. Korby's ship and begin to build their own starships, allowing them to leave Exo III. Connections [ ], background [ ].

There is a discrepancy between the events of "The Survival Equation" and those of Double Double and Immortal Coil , as the android manufacturing plant and the connection between the androids that kept them active and functional was shut down permanently. In the later novels, which were published before "The Survival Equation", this connection was never mentioned and probably did not exist.

Exo III androids

Exo III androids were originally created by the inhabitants of Exo III after their star began to steadily fade, forcing them underground to avoid the frigid conditions on the surface. Finding their creators illogical and ultimately self-destructive, the androids rebelled, killing their creators. All but one, Ruk , was deactivated or destroyed by 2261 , when Roger Korby — nearly dead from exposure to the surface conditions — found Ruk. Using the machines that Ruk had maintained for millennia, Korby transferred his mind into an android body. He then used the machines to create a doppelgänger of his deceased colleague, Dr . Brown , as well as a female companion, Andrea . When the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 arrived in orbit of the planet on Stardate 2712.4 , Korby created a duplicate of Captain James T. Kirk , and attempted to use the ship to infiltrate the Federation with androids. Kirk violently rebelled against Korby's plan, resulting in the deaths of all of the androids. [1]

The figure will include multiple hands, a 2401-era Starfleet phaser, and a bottle of Chateau Picard wine as accessories, and this edition of Picard will arrive clad in his  Picard Season 3 jacket, pants, and boots — and with his unique Admiral’s badge.

From EXO-6’s official announcement:

This 1:6-scale figure re-creates this iconic character in exquisite 1:6 detail. Standing approximately 11 inches tall, every element, from his 24th century jacket to his custom black boots, is authentically reproduced. The original portrait sculpt of Patrick Stewart has an authentic, hand-painted likeness.   The EXO-6 Picard 1:6 Scale Articulated Figure includes:   – Fully Articulated Body: More than 30 points of articulation allow the figure to be displayed in multiple dynamic poses, approximately 28 cm tall.   – Realistic Portrait: Lovingly rendered by a top artist, this excellent likeness of Patrick Stewart as jean-Luc Picard is specially hand-painted.   – 24th Century Outfit: With research assisted by Costume Designer Michael Crow, this clothing set matches the onscreen costume as seen in Star Trek: Picard Season 3. Including the jacket, pants and trousers – all matched to the original costume. An authentically scaled communicator badge is permanently affixed to the jacket. – Boots: Plastic boots sculpted to match the cut and style of the original footwear.   – Display Base: A hexagonal display base featuring the transporter pad will provide additional support for the figure. Two different inserts for the floor of the base can represent the transporter pad or the center of the transporter array.

The new Admiral Picard figure is up for preorder at EXO-6’s website today for a price of $190, and is expected to ship to collectors in late 2023.

While other third-party retailers will likely list the figure in the coming days, the fastest way to get the completed Admiral Picard figure once out of manufacturing is to order through EXO-6 directly.

Review: EXO-6 ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ Data Figure Is Almost Human

exo iii star trek

Star Trek: The Next Generation Lt. Commander Data 1/6 Figure

Manufacturer: EXO-6 Price: $190 ($230 with additional accessories) Grade: A+

Our favorite android

Just as Leonard Nimoy’s Spock became the face of the original Star Trek , Brent Spiner’s android Data encapsulated the appeal of 1987’s syndicated sequel series Star Trek: The Next Generation . Conceived as a kind of hybrid of Spock and the android Questor from Gene Roddenberry’s failed pilot The Questor Tapes , Data was a more innocent figure than the sophisticated and often sarcastic Spock, so much so that when the show’s writers attempted to recreate the pointed banter of the original series’ Spock and Bones McCoy with Diana Muldaur’s second season physician Dr. Katherine Pulaski, the dialogue came off as cruel and fans rebelled.

exo iii star trek

Brent Spiner as Lt. Cmdr. Data in “Data’s Day”

Brent Spiner’s casting as Data was particularly sharp. More of a Broadway song and dance man, Spiner was a naturally broader performer than the reserved Leonard Nimoy, and his work to contain his stage-bound mannerisms and expressions resulted in a perfectly contained demeanor for Data, who seemed to “hum” with controlled energy even as spoke in a gentle, near whisper of a voice. The android was prone to alien influences and had a malevolent “brother” constructed by Data’s fatherly creator, Dr. Noonien Soong—and with Spiner portraying all three characters, the actor had numerous opportunities to emote and slip into alternate personalities over the course of the series.

exo iii star trek

Brent Spiner as Lt. Cmdr. Data in The Offspring”

EXO-6 Data Figure

EXO-6’s line of high-end 12-inch action figures actually launched with a Data figure as well as Jean-Luc Picard—but depicted them as they were seen in the theatrical movie Star Trek: First Contact. EXO has cranked out a variety of figures over the past two years, all but completing a Star Trek Voyager line, adding captains from Enterprise, Deep Space Nine, and figures from Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and the Original Series as well as a Locutus and Q from TNG , but we haven’t seen any regular TNG crew members—until now. The TNG Data is long-awaited and EXO more than delivers on its promise with this sleek reproduction of the character in his familiar black-and-mustard Starfleet uniform.

exo iii star trek

EXO-6 TNG Data figure

The facial sculpt by Godwin Nerona perfectly captures the character’s neutral expression, which can be read as quizzical, quietly defiant, concerned, remorseful—whatever you want. Paint detail subtly reproduces an almost mauve skin coloration and adds a wonderfully inhuman glint to Data’s eyes under the right lighting conditions. EXO’s best figures tend to defy the camera’s ability to show off their subtleties—in hand Data looks just about exactly like a shrunken-down Brent Spiner and unnervingly alive.

exo iii star trek

EXO-6 TNG Data figure facial sculpt

The figure’s uniform represents the two-piece affair which I believe was introduced in season three rather than the early seasons’ tighter one-piece jumpsuit that reportedly caused the cast enormous discomfort and Spiner actual back injury. The resulting look is sharp and clean, and the looser fit affords the figure’s 30 points of articulation abundant maneuvering room to pose the character.

exo iii star trek

And while EXO could have cheaped out and simply provided the fold-out tricorder and cobra phaser they made for the First Contact figures, they step up here and add a TNG-appropriate tricorder and phaser that are just microscopically different in detail from their First Contact counterparts.

exo iii star trek

Data comes in two variations: an “Essential” $190 version that comes with the tricorder, phaser and their holsters, the usual transporter pad display stand, and four hands (two relaxed and two configured to hold the phaser and tricorder), and a “standard” $230 issue that includes those accessories plus a PADD and two head sculpts, one the same included with the “Essential” release and one featuring an opening panel in Data’s hair to show his cybernetic brain. The more expensive version also includes not one but two Spots—Data’s beloved(?) cat—one in a sitting pose, the other designed to drape over Data’s forearm as he holds the animal. Adorable!

exo iii star trek

EXO-6 TNG Data figure “standard version” extra accessories

Aside from EXO-6’s First Contact Data there’ve been a couple of other 12” figures of the character released over the years, including a Star Trek Insurrection figure from Playmates and Dragon’s release of the character, which seemed pretty neat back in the ‘90s but which is absolutely put to shame by EXO’s.

exo iii star trek

EXO-6 TNG Data figure (L) compared with Dragon Data figure (R)

Picard and other TNG figures are in the pipeline from the company, although for 2024 it looks like we’ll be seeing more DS9 (Kira and Odo), Strange New Worlds (Pike and Spock), and movie figures (TWOK’s Saavik and Trek III ’s Lord Kruge, both of which look to be spectacular figures). But if Data is any indication, collectors are in very good hands—this is a stupendous release.

Both the “Standard” ($230) and “Essential” versions of the Data figure are available now ($190) at EXO-6.com . The Essential version is also available at Entertainment Earth .

exo iii star trek

The Data figure is part of EXO-6’s Star Trek: Next Generation collection, including Locutus and judge Q. The Judge Q figure is available at EXO-6.com. The Locutus figure can be pre-ordered at Entertainment Earth .

Very nice, but perhaps a slightly too grim facial expression? This is one of the better ones though — nice job EXO-6.

Some of this company’s sculpts have been pretty bad, but this one is really good.

Somebody call me when they make “Picard Season 1” Data from the pilot :P

Which one though? his hairline kept changing sometimes it would change from shot to shot in one scene

Isn‘t that ideal for two or three spare heads? xD

Nice work, though the expression reminds me of when Data was playing dead to spite the collector guy who captured him. What’s his face. Daphne’s boyfriend from Frasier.

Kivas Fajo, played by Saul Rubanek

I picked up their Locutus and TMP Spock and both lived up completely to my expectations. Can’t say I love the expression on this one of Data, but it looks good considering. I would have liked one of his more “curious” looks. They seem a bit hit and miss on others I have watched online like Kira and 7 of 9, but that’s a bit subjective. Kruge and Saavik look amazing! Those aren’t my favorite characters though, so given the price points I’ve got to hold out for a few other favorite characters. Can’t wait to see what they do next!

Wish list: TOS McCoy perhaps although TMP McCoy with the beard is a hoot? TWOK Khan? TWOK Kirk? TNG Picard (although they’ve already done First Contact Picard and Old Man Picard from Picard looks like the next one)? Riker! Dax! Worf! The Gorn! The First Contact Borg Queen! The Mugatu? I’m going to be broke…

I want a Jeffrey Hunter Pike, Majel Barrett Number One, and Dr. Boyce. That would be my wish list.

That’s cool! It would have been so interesting to see how Star Trek would have developed with that original cast. “The Cage” is a great episode!

Still waiting for a proper Uhura from TOS

Almost human? Does that mean he is “fully functional”?

Dragon’s Data sculpt is embarrassingly bad. Since when did Lance Henriksen play Data?

I got the TMP Spock and Kirk. Terrible likenesses. You compare this to Hot Toys figured and this EXO stuff is trash.

At least I could flog it on eBay for more than tge figures cost!

TMP Kirk looks bad, but TMP Spock is a good likeness, but to each their own.

Check out Hot Toys Superman. It’s uncanny, like having Reeves in miniature form

Wow! That is a great version of Reeves’ Superman. I’ll have to pay more attention to that company.

Re: expression. I got the Standard version because the 2nd head ( the one with the removable head piece) has that slight upturn in the left corner of Data’s mouth. That’s the Data I want, and I wish they had mentioned it in the review

Oh nice! Didn’t realize that was a feature it offered.

Yes! It’s a slightly different expression, but just enough to change the affect

Looks so life like of Data.

Shoulda come from Exo III instead.

I still think it’s very confusing and misleading that the “Standard” option is the more expensive

COMMENTS

  1. Exo III
