Galapagos Islands Tours & Vacations

Male Marine Iguanas and Sally lightfoot crab on the rocks of the Galapagos islands, Ecuador.

Step into an isolated world. See giant tortoises roaming and unforgettable landscapes unfurl before your very eyes.

Get ready to observe wildlife the way Charles Darwin did hundreds of years ago. Inquisitive sea lions and spiky marine iguanas breach and bask between island and shore. Hammerhead sharks patrol the deep waters while blue-footed boobies and albatross cut through the sky. Nowadays, these Ecuadorian islands host a steady stream of modern-day explorers cruising from isla to isla. Snorkel in crystal-clear waters, traverse volcanic landscapes and spot animals you've only ever seen pictures of. To sum it up, there's simply no place on Earth quite like the Galapagos.

Transport in the galapagos islands.

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.Depending on which trip you're on while in the Galapagos Islands, you may find yourself on:

Best time to visit.

Simply put, there’s no bad time to visit the Galapagos Islands. Good weather is mostly found year round, as are the animals. This being said, November through to June is the preferred time to visit, with clearer skies, calmer seas and decreased winds. Of these, March and April have less rain, while November and December are the warmest. July to November is the best time for divers as whale sharks can often be spotted at Wolf and Darwin islands.

Culture and customs

Ever since Charles Darwin brought attention to the giant tortoises, sea lions, hammerhead sharks and other spectacular wildlife of the Galapagos Islands, people have been fascinated by this archipelago of volcanic islands. Originally a pirate hideout, people started migrating to the islands from Ecuador after it became part of the country in 1832. Of the 13 major islands and scores of smaller islands and islets that make up the Galapagos, only five of them are inhabited – about 26,000 residents spread over the islands of Isabela, Santa Cruz, Floreana, Baltra and San Cristobal. The wildlife rules the rest of the islands, which are carefully managed to help protect the precious environment.

Geography and environment

Located in the Pacific Ocean about 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands are a volcanic archipelago of 13 major islands, six smaller islands and more than 100 islets. Some are sparsely vegetated with largely mountainous interiors, whereas others are comparatively lush with white-sand beaches. Many of the islands are in a state of flux, as continual volcanic eruptions cause them to erode and expand.

The largest island, Isabela, makes up half the land area of the Galapagos and is characterized by three active volcanos, a blue lagoon, clear lakes filled with flamingos and beaches where iguanas and sea lions roam. Santa Cruz is the second largest island with giant tortoises, marine iguanas and Galapagos crabs residing in Tortuga Bay. The oldest and most remote island, Espanola (also called Hood), boasts boobies, albatrosses and many species of birds and lizards not found anywhere else in the world.

Top wildlife to spot

1. Sea Lions

Whether you're loafing about on the beach or snorkeling offshore, you’ll be hard-pressed not to come face-to-face with these frolicsome critters at some stage. Playful, plentiful, and pretty much fearless, you’re supposed to keep a 2-meter distance from these guys at all times - though their insatiable curiosity can make this hard.

2. Marine Iguanas

The only lizards in the world that can live and forage in the ocean, the marine iguana is found solely in the Galapagos. Fierce and ferocious though these Godzilla-like reptiles may appear (Darwin called them ‘Imps of Darkness’), it’s all bluff – they only feed on algae. And with lung capacities permitting up to half an hour of underwater foraging, you’re just as likely find them gorging on the islands’ surrounding seabeds as scampering about the craggy rocks they inhabit.

3. Hammerhead Sharks

Boasting one of the animal kingdom’s most puzzling physiologies, hammerhead sharks are found in abundance off Wolf, Bartolome, Santa Cruz and Darwin islands. Unlike most sharks, they will often merge into schools of over 100 during the day - making for some incredible and surreal photo opportunities. And with no known human fatalities and a wealth of choice natural prey on offer, diving amongst them isn’t as scary or dangerous as one might think.

Darwin finches gave rise to one of the most game-changing theories of all time. By studying the differences between finches from different islands, Darwin hypothesized that the birds’ adaptations to their habitats resulted in their mutation into different species: his Theory of Evolution.

5. Giant Tortoises

No trip to the islands is complete without a visit to its most famous residents. Weighing up to 882 pounds, regularly living for more than 100 years, and able to go for up to 1 year without food, these gentle and slow-moving monsters are an intriguing and humbling spectacle to observe.

6. Sea Turtles

Snorkeling alongside these majestic creatures of the deep (or more accurately, the shallows) is one of those rare, life-affirming moments that makes a trip to the Galapagos immediately worthwhile. Keep your eyes peeled on the beaches for turtle nests too - the Galapagos is a hotbed of activity for these critters.

7. Blue-Footed Boobies

Despite essentially looking like handsome seagulls with painted toenails, blue-footed boobies, when caught hunting, serve up one of the Galapagos' most thrilling spectacles. Diving from heights of up to 100ft, groups of boobies hit the water at speeds up around 60km per hour. They usually let out a shrill whistle before letting rip, which means you'll usually have warning enough to get your camera out too. How considerate.

8. Flightless Cormorants

Granted, a flightless cormorant spotted on land isn't one of the most invigorating sights you'll see during your time here. But wait until you don your snorkel gear and spot one weaving elegantly through the water - the flightless cormorant will likely become one of your favorite discoveries in the Galapagos Islands for this reason alone.

9. Frigatebird

With its striking wingspan and deeply-forked tail, the magnificent frigate bird is easily one of the most impressive birds in the skies of the Galapagos archipelago. But they don't have such a swell reputation amongst other birds. Whilst they hunt fish on the oceans surface, they also force their winged brethren to regurgitate their food, which then they eat - a process known as kleptoparasitism. Still, they look gorgeous – particularly the males, with their bright-red chin sac.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to Galapagos Islands?

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information.

Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality.

Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

Is tipping customary in the Galapagos Islands?

While tipping isn’t mandatory, tips are very much appreciated by service workers and guides.

Leaving a 10% tip is customary in restaurants.

Some automatically add a 10% service charge to your bill, in which case an extra tip isn’t required.

What is the weather like in the Galapagos Islands?

The Galapagos Islands enjoy almost perfect weather all year with two distinct seasons offering warmer, rainier months and cooler, drier months.

Temperatures rarely dip below 70°F or reach higher than 90°F. You can travel to the islands anytime throughout the year and experience fantastic weather.

Light rainfall is expected from January to May (along with high humidity levels), but it never lasts for long and doesn't often turn into heavier downpours.

What is the internet access like in the Galapagos Islands?

There are reliable internet cafes in Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz Island) and Puerto Baquerizo (San Cristobal Island).

Some hotels and restaurants on other islands will have a Wi-Fi connection, but it is best not to rely on it.

Can I use my cell phone in the Galapagos Islands?

There's good cell phone reception on the larger islands, but don’t expect it when at sea. The best local telephone companies are Porta and Movistar.

Ensure you have global roaming activated before leaving home if you wish to use your cell phone.

What are the toilets like in the Galapagos Islands?

Most towns have Western-style flushable toilets, though you will likely encounter squat toilets as well. Regardless, it’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitiser, as they are not always provided.

Can I drink the water in the Galapagos Islands?

Tap water isn’t considered safe to drink in the Galapagos Islands.

Avoid drinks with ice and make sure to peel fruit before eating it.

Help the environment and try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle with filtered water. Your leader or hotel can tell you where to find filtered water.

Are credit cards accepted widely in the Galapagos Islands?

No, credit cards are not widely accepted.

There are a handful of shops on Santa Cruz that may accept major credit cards, but it’s preferable to pay in cash.

How many islands make up the Galapagos Islands?

The Galapagos Islands are made up of 13 larger islands and more than 60 smaller islands and islets. 5 islands are habitable to just over 30,000 people.

These 5 islands are Isla Baltra, Isla Floreana, Isla Isabela, Isla Santa Cruz, and Isla San Cristobal.

What is ATM access like in Galapagos Island?

The banks in Puerto Ayora and Puerto Baquerizo have ATMs.

The Banco del Pacifico in both towns is open from 8 am to 3:30 pm Monday to Friday and 9 am to 12.30 pm on Saturdays.

It's best to withdraw your money on the mainland in case these are out of order.

Check each bank's website for up-to-date opening hours.

Are the Galapagos Islands a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

The Galapagos Islands are a relatively hassle-free destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers.

Same-sex marriage was legalised in Ecuador in 2008. The country hosts several fiestas where it’s acceptable for men to cross-dress as women.

However, homophobic attitudes do exist among the older generations. It is best to avoid public displays of affection where possible.

For more detailed advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

What to drink in the Galapagos Islands

Quench your thirst after a glorious day spent exploring the Galapagos  by sipping on a glass of canelazo, horchata tea, or freshly made fruit juice.

During your cruise around the islands, it makes sense to try as many traditional Ecuadorian drinks as you can, especially since there are heaps to choose from.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

The Islands

The Islands

Islands and beaches of all colors, cliffs and stunning geological formations, bays and coves lapped by very rich ocean waters. With unique landscapes and magical corners, each of the islands has its own character. The Galapagos Islands are a natural sanctuary of pristine land and marine ecosystems isolated in the vast ocean. Visiting them is like being transported to a bygone era.

Unique Wildlife

Unique Wildlife

The islands where their unusual high percentage of endemic animals (animals found nowhere else on the planet) will captivate you with their truly unique and fascinating forms, behavior and fearlessness. What people love about galapagos islands tours.

This was a great tour, the galápagos is amazing! G-adventure has a well organized tour. There are some early morning days but they don't matter because you are in the Galápagos! The rooms are basic but have air conditioning which is good since it is very hot there. José was a fantastic guide and had so much knowledge about the islands. Definitely choose the add-on snorkeling trips they are worth it. I think the Galápagos needs to be on everyone's list.
This tour is intended for people who are physically fit, able to walk 6 kilometers a day, love to kayak/snorkel/swim/bike, and still have plenty of energy to enjoy the wildlife. I cannot cope up with the group, but luckily our CEO offered me options like museum visit, tour to Tntoreras. I still was able yo see all the wildlife I need to see exvept the cormorant. I did not expect to stay in a 5 star hotel. I find the accommodation suitable enough for my needs: comfortable bed, air condition, water, electricity, wifi. Special thanks to Sandra, CEO. She is one of the best tour guides I met in my years of travel. She is a great listener and teacher. She was born in Santa Cruz. She knows Galapagos like the palm of her hand.
lovely tour - very good itinerary and comfortable pace

G Adventures

"My guide was fabulous! Absolutely can’t say enough good things about him. Other than that, though, I was pretty disappointed with this tour. I’m honestly just not sure what I paid for? I guess hotels and transportation, but I feel like I could have organized this myself and saved a ton of money. It felt like NOTHING was included - no meals, no activities - everything worthwhile was an “optional add-on,” and the alternative was to just hang out at the beach. Which is fine, but again, something I could have sorted out on my own. I think y’all need to be more transparent about what you’re offering for the cost.

Jessica keep on saying that someone from the office made a mistake, to cover herself… I was devastated, didn’t know what to do.. in sNta cruz airport, and no flight for me.. that is a big big mistake!… I want certain actions to be taken towards her.. it was five of us, stuck on the air port…

Founded in 1534 by Spanish Conquistadors, it is nestled in the lower Andes mountain range, creating quite a dramatic backdrop to the colonial architecture of the center and the more modern suburbs, which sit in the rocks of the mountains themselves. Quito is located a short drive south of the equator – Ecuador is, in fact, the Spanish word for the equator, the city sits on the eastern slope of the Pichincha volcano.

Quito lies in the valley of the Guayllabamba River, flanked by volcanoes, many of which are snow-capped, and visible from the city on a clear day. Quito’s altitude is listed at 2,820 meters (9,250 feet). The colonial influence is strong in the traditional center of the city and any visit to Quito should include a stroll around this area, which was one of the world’s first UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Buildings of particular interest being the Carondelet Palace, the Cathedral, the four main churches, and the Basilica del Voto Nacional. The center of Quito is the most untouched and also the biggest colonial center of any city in the Americas.

Giant Tortoises Breeding Center & El Chato Reserve

AM : You will visit “Fausto Llerena” Giant Tortoises Breeding Center in Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island, where giant tortoises are bred in captivity. This is home to tortoises ranging from 3-inches to 4-feet long adults. Subspecies of the giant tortoises interact with one another, and many of the older tortoises are accustomed to humans stretching out their heads for a photo opportunity. The babies are kept until they are about four-years-old and strong enough to survive on their own.

PM : In the afternoon we will head on to the El Chato Reserve which is divided into two areas: Caseta and Chato. The trail begins at Santa Rosa (13.7 miles / 22 km) from Puerto Ayora, with the Caseta route being the more challenging. The reserve allows visitors to observe giant tortoises in the wild during the dry season and is also a good place to spot short-eared owls, Darwin’s finches, yellow warblers, Galapagos rails, and paint-billed crakes.

Dragon Hill & Bachas Beach

AM : Situated on Santa Cruz Island, Dragon Hill is one of the newest visitor sites accessible to tourists in the Galapagos Islands. One of the lengthier Galapagos walking trails will lead visitors along a beach and up a trail to the lagoon lookout where bright flamingos, pintail ducks, and land iguanas can be spotted.

PM : In the afternoon, you will visit Bachas Beach, a white-sand coral beach. Located on the north shore of Santa Cruz, Las Bachas is a swimming beach. One of the few remnants of the U.S. World War II presence in the Galapagos, a floating pier, can be seen here. You may see flamingos, Sally Lightfoot crabs, hermit crabs, black-necked stilts, and whimbrels. Sea turtles also nest off the beach.

Post Office Bay & Cormorant Point

AM : In the 18th-century whalers passing through the islands placed a wooden barrel on Floreana Island for use as an unofficial mailbox. The tradition continues today as visitors leave addressed postcards in the barrel and sort through left mail to deliver at home.

PM : This site hosts a large flamingo lagoon where other birds such as common stilts and white-cheeked pintails can also be seen. The “Green Beach” here is named due to its green color, which comes from a high percentage of olivine crystals in the sand, and the “Four Sand Beach” composed of white coral.

Cotopaxi National Park

Cotopaxi is the most prominent and famous volcano in Ecuador and its almost symmetrical cone visible on the skyline from Quito. Rising to a height of over 12 thousand feet the volcano is part of a complex of volcanoes on the Ring of Fire and is home to one of the few equatorial glaciers in the world.

At the foot of the volcano is the entrance to the Cotopaxi National Park where we make a stop at the visitor center to learn about the exciting history of the Cotopaxi, past eruptions, and the impact those eruptions have had on the surrounding area, culture, and agriculture. The mountain’s colorful past also has had an impact geographically and this has, in turn, affected the wildlife. Our guide will explain how the volcano is central to life in the area and talk you through the unique characteristics of the local flora and fauna.

From there we visit Lake Limpiopungo which offers a chance for some spectacular sights. We take a walk around a part of the lake till we reach the perfect point to see the whole of Cotopaxi reflected in the lake as a mirror image. Quite often the low lying clouds can offer an additional dimension to this view and many a fantastic photograph has been taken from this viewpoint. If you feel like a longer walk, a 2-hour hike will take us to Mt. Cotopaxi’s J. Ribas refuge (4,800 m) where you will be able to enjoy spectacular views of the volcano and the surrounding Andean peaks.

Cuenca and Surrounding Ruins

Today, we wake early to explore Cuenca and surrounds, and experience numerous interesting excursions.

Ingapirca Fortress : home to what is arguably the most famous archeological site in Ecuador, Ingapirca. Thought to be an observatory and fortress, this location is where the emperor and his entourage would rest during trips to the northern segment of the empire. The site was constructed from perfectly carved stone, joined seamlessly without the use or mortar.

The Devils Nose : The biggest complication faced by the construction of the Trans-Andean railroad was the Devil’s Nose, a mountain with almost perpendicular walls. To overcome this obstacle, a zigzag railroad was built that climbs more than 500 meters in less than 12 km with steep ascents and descents. It today remains an impressive piece of engineering. From the Pistishi viewpoint, we will have a spectacular view of this feat, and the surrounding countryside.

A walking tour of Cuenca : Cuenca is considered by many to be the most beautiful city in Ecuador. One of the first things to notice when entering Cuenca is the magnificent skyline marked by brilliant church domes. Cuenca’s winding rivers, graceful ironwork balconies, and beautiful gardens are part of the pleasant atmosphere of this historic city, declared a Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO in December 1999.

The Craftsman's Trail

One of the most interesting things in South America, and particularly in the Andean region is the abundance of fantastic local craftsmen. Many regions have whole styles of textiles and leatherwear unique to their culture and Ecuador truly is a country of artisans. Two such places are the towns of Gualaceo and Chordeleg, and these near neighbors are located just 45 minutes east of Cuenca. In these traditional settlements set in beautiful Andean landscapes, we will meet families who are still making textiles the way the “Cañaris” (the pre-Inca inhabitants) did more than 500 years ago.

Among the other workshops, we visit are a traditional jewelry workshop, a musical instrument workshop where regional variations on the guitar are a specialty. Guitars are a specialty of this area, so much so that the area is known as the ‘Guitar Trail’. We also make a visit to a ‘Chola Cuencana’ who stills makes her straw hats in the traditional manner, following centuries of knowledge that have passed from generation to generation. Along the way, we will have the opportunity to visit an orchid farm that houses more than 2,000 species of orchids, and also stop by a market selling fruit, traditional food, and artisanal goods.

Riches of Cajas National Park

Today, we will visit El Cajas, a 70,000 ha. National Park that contains everything from cloud forest to rocky lunar landscapes. However, it is the lakes (more than 200 of them) scattered among jagged peaks for which the reserve is best known. Most of El Cajas lies above 3,000 meters, and the preeminent terrain is grassland, but a little higher up and we reach the frosty microclimate mountaintops.

Above 4,000 meters (12,000 feet) the ice and frost are a deterrent to most vegetation, but the tiny, and hardy, Quina tree clings to life here, making it the tree that can survive at the highest altitude in the world.  Keep a lookout for these 200-year-old specimens tucked up against hillsides in pockets of primary forest, clothed in a green palette of mosses and ferns and fighting each other for sunlight.

En El Cajas there is a good chance of seeing the wild llamas that were reintroduced to the park in the late 1990s. The park’s other animal inhabitants, such as the spectacled bear, puma, and tigrillo, are more elusive, but not impossible to spot if you are lucky. The long list of birds that can be seen here includes hummingbirds, toucans, and magnificent Andean condors that circle ominously above.

Countries Visited

Places visited, suggested duration, customizable itinerary, quito – aristocratic welcome to ecuador.

Quito's streets wind down from the shadows of distant volcanoes, their facades doused in remarkable history. The historic central neighborhood became the world's first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, and almost every building has a story to tell. After you are greeted at the airport, you'll be transferred to your hotel, a 16th-century conqueror's mansion that's been converted into the city's finest hotel. Elegant and decadent, the interior matches the history of the neoclassic exterior. It's a step back in time that will immerse you in the heart and style of the World Heritage site. Then step outside and you'll be in Plaza de la Independencia, the center of the city from a time way before the Spanish or even the Incas arrived.

What's Included:

Quito – Touring the World's First UNESCO World Heritage Site

The next day, you will stand in Plaza de la Independencia and take in the view. Moorish domes rise from churches, the president's palace stands unbowed, and balconies jut out from colored facades. There's a history behind every brick, but before you visit the heritage streets, you will start the day rising above Quito. Take a cable car to the slopes of the Pichincha Volcano for marvelous views of the Andes and the snow-capped volcanoes that encircle the city.

Then you will discover the city. Wallow in the elegance of the early 17th-century San Francisco Square and its enormous stone church, stand blinded before the completely gold facade of La Compania and allow your guide to narrate a tale that dates to the 4th century. Over three hours, you will get a glimpse at the city's remarkable riches and admire how eclectic styles have blended to create something truly iconic. The rest of the afternoon will be at your leisure.

Galapagos – Giant Tortoises as the Galapagos Cruise Begins

The Galapagos have never been connected to any mainland. These volcanic spurts on the equator, cast adrift in the Pacific, didn't separate from any land mass. Early reptiles arrived here riding the trunks of felled trees while marine life descended into the underwater bounty. The next day, when you fly to Galapagos from Quito and you will immediately feel this ancient volcanic history where the landscape is laced with flora that comes straight from the surreal. You cross Santa Cruz by road, past strange geological sinkholes, and endemic daisies that rise five meters high.

After lunch, the domed shells of tortoises will occupy the afternoon. When you step gently on the grass, their elongated necks maintain an inquisitive stance. But step too hard and their heads will disappear into shells. Hundreds of them slowly mow the grass, and there's lots of opportunity for photos with the largest of all tortoise species.

Later in the afternoon, you will continue to Puerto Ayora and board your classic Galapagos yacht. Enjoy a welcome drink in the lounge bar, check into your spacious cabin, and then watch the sun go down from the open, upper lounge. With a capacity of 40 guests, the yacht is large enough to provide a comfortable journey between islands as well as offer a choice of activities at each island visited. Three naturalist guides will lead the expedition, and two expert chefs serve three lavish meals a day, plus some indulgent snacks when you return from each activity. Tonight, you will enjoy dinner and a welcome briefing on board.

Galapagos – Snorkeling with Seals and Exploring the Islands

In the morning, you will wake early to the squark of sea lions that accompanies a purple-tinted sunrise. Before breakfast, you can kayak through the gentle waters beside Sante Fe Island, which will give you a chance to paddle beside the playful antics of the sea lions. An hour later, you admire them on land, a whole harem of blubbery comedy flopping around the beach.

Camouflaged and silent, the Santa Fe land iguana will be your next unusual sight. The large lizards bask beneath prickly-pear cactuses as they cover the trail. To complete your exploration of Santa Fe, you can choose to either snorkel through the bay or tour it with a glass-bottomed boat. Expect lots of sea lions regardless of your choice, along with a tropical menagerie of fish.

Early afternoons onboard are a chance to relax and doze off on the deck. Blue ocean merges with blue sky as you cruise through the archipelago. Enormous seabirds randomly grace the journey and there will always be a chance to spot whales or dolphins in the deep ocean waters.

The afternoon's visit will be to South Plaza Island, where scarlet succulents juxtapose with yellow-gray land iguanas and more playful sea lion colonies. Shearwaters, swallow-tailed gulls, and frigates, line the cliffs and each one will impress you with their wingspans. Dinner will be on board during another leisurely evening.

Galapagos – Endemic and Iconic Birds on North Seymour

Today, you will spend the morning on North Seymour Island. Huge colonies of endemic blue-footed boobies nest beside the walking trail and they sharply guard their white eggs with a pair of azure feet. Frigates inflate their red chests in a search for a mate, the brighter and bigger the better on this unusual island. Nazca boobies perform mating dances just meters from the trail while you must be careful not to step on any marine iguanas. There are very few predators on the Galapagos Islands, so these extremely rare birds are not fearful. They don't fly from view and you will appreciate them and their nesting sights from just six feet away.

After the land excursion, you will explore the water, again choosing from snorkeling or a glass-bottom boat tour. The afternoon provides a similar marine opportunity at the Las Bachas site on Santa Cruz Island. White-tipped reef sharks and turtles can be spotted at both sights, and you'll never tire of swimming with sea lions. Las Bachas is a home for the world's pinkest flamingo as well as the nesting site of the East Pacific green sea turtle.

Galapagos – Volcanic Memoirs and Stunning Snorkeling

Lava tubes twist across Bartolome Island, sculpted into impossible shapes by the volcanic origins of the Galapagos. Start your day with a hike to the summit of this island for dazzling views over cascades of ancient lava and iconic Pinnacle Rock, the most photographed sight on the islands. A hundred shades of stunted red cascade across the island, which creates the impression that you're walking on Mars. Accompanying the bizarre landscapes is an equally strange character, the tiny Galapagos penguin. Mating on lava cliffs and jumping from eroded overhangs, these diminutive characters are yet another endemic sight on your cruise. Snorkeling is highly recommended here, as reef sharks and rays accompany the penguins in the water.

Across the water, your afternoon excursion will be Sullivan Bay on James Island, where each meter of the landscape is marked by ethereal volcanic carvings. Virtually nothing grows here, but you can spot how the lava is gradually eroding into soil that will host the next generation of endemic species, many centuries from now.

Enjoy farewell drinks and dinner on board as the naturalist guide presents photos from the last four days. Then enjoy a final night onboard with a dazzling sky of stars visible from the jacuzzi or upper deck.

Galapagos to Quito – Spa Indulgence on Your Return to the Mainland

Even as you disembark from your yacht and head to the airport, the following day, you can't miss the wildlife. Sea lions bask on the jetty as they lounge beside suitcases and the plane’s wings. Fly back to Quito where you're transferred to your hotel, a restored 18th-century hacienda with an indulgent spa. Relax and enjoy the spa, as well as the llamas that roam the vast grounds, before a classic Ecuadorian dinner in the restaurant. It's an elegant and idyllic place to spend the night before your journey continues.

Imbabura – Boutique Towns and the Market of Otavalo

Colors spill down the streets of ancient Otavalo and the embroidered clothes of locals contrast with stalls of endemic Ecuadorian fruit. Keep walking, past the ponchos and ceremonial wooden masks to the country's most famous market. Every Saturday, locals from many surrounding villages arrive in Otavalo to sell their unique produce at the market. Each of these villages has a specialty, like woodcarving, leather, shamanism, or tapestry.

During your stay in Imbabura, you will have a private driver and guide. The afternoon can be tailored to visiting the villages. Continue heading north through Imbabura Province to a quaint hamlet where your hotel and spa will be your base. This ancient hacienda is a living art gallery, with every room decorated by multiple modernist paintings and huge murals that cover many walls.

Imbabura – A Train Journey and Horse Ride through History

Two ancient transport methods combine today as you journey through history. Start in Ibarra, where an iconic reconditioned first-class train will take you through the Chota Valley. Glorious Andean vistas surround the track, occasionally disappearing as you dip through mountain tunnels or cross arched wooden bridges. This classic route commemorates the journey of freed slaves who worked on the surrounding sugarcane plantations.

Disembarking at Salinas, you'll be treated to a traditional dance from the local Afro-Ecuadorian community. In the afternoon, you head high into the slopes on horseback and a gentle ride takes you through quaint village squares to vast panoramas dotted with snow-capped volcanic summits. Canter back down towards a village church before you sooth your legs at the hotel’s spa.

Day  10 - 11

Zuleta – Presidential History at Ecuador's Finest Hacienda

Faces from history hang above the opulent living rooms of Hacienda Zuleta. Gala Plaza Lasso stands proud, next to his father, who was also an Ecuadorian president. This hacienda has been the weekend home of the Lasso family for over a century and has since been converted into a luxury guesthouse. But it doesn't feel like a guesthouse. You'll be a guest of the family, as you sleep in stunning bedrooms and converse with Gala Lasso's children and grandchildren over cheese and wine. The hacienda's history dates back before Ecuador even existed as a country. Much of the original 17th-century features have been preserved and this continues to be a working farm that is famous countrywide for its cheeses.

Hacienda Zuleta stands on 2,000 hectares of wild countryside and hiking trails. You will spend the days taking any of their marked trails or choose a horse for a ride through indigenous forest. Condors swoop overhead, spectacle bears grace the forest, and there's a delightful tranquility to every hour spent here. Continuing the experience is the exacting focus on the gastronomic experience. Each meal will be included and served in a lavish dining room with views onto the Andes. As night falls, the fireplaces roar, keeping you company as you spend two nights in luxurious history.

Quito – Departure

Historical and natural memories are discussed as Quito disappears from view and you soar back home. Blue-footed boobies, golden churches, presidential haciendas, seals, and penguins create a hundred eclectic snapshots that combine to create the iconic memoir of Ecuador and the Galapagos.

Detailed Description

The Galapagos Islands blur the distinction between fiction and natural history. Even after five days, they will not seem real. This series of volcanic islands is home to a distinct collection of unusual endemic wildlife. Cast adrift in the Pacific and separated from the world, they've evolved into a remarkable sight for all natural history lovers. Blue-footed boobies nest beside marine iguanas, Galapagos penguins, and sea lion harems are discovered on snorkeling adventures and ten subspecies of giant tortoise plod across lawns of green. Magnificent frigates inflate their red chests to attract a mate as your eyes are distracted by a migratory whale. However, Ecuador's history isn't just a natural one. Quito was named as the world's first ever UNESCO World Heritage site in 1978 and makes for an intriguing journey back in time. Spend the first couple of days lost in its antiquity where you will discover more places that border on the fictional. From a church completely covered in gold to a 16th-century conqueror mansion that will be your hotel, the streets will be carved with centuries of conquest and excess.

Each Galapagos Island will be as unique as the wildlife that graces it. Visiting the Central Galapagos provides an idyllic and eclectic overview of the islands' endemic appeal. There will be multiple opportunities to discover the marine world, through a choice of snorkeling and glass-bottom boat rides. In the water, you can expect penguins, white-tip reef sharks, turtles, playful seals, and a remarkable kaleidoscope of tropical fish. You'll come head-to-head with giant tortoises and a strange group of endemic iguanas, as well as walking across lava flows that symbolize the islands' history. A visit to North Seymour Island and various other nesting sights will also ensure that iconic birdlife is experienced at remarkable proximity. Blue-footed boobies, red-chested frigates, Galapagos hawks, flamingos and swallowtail gulls are all featured here. This wildlife is everywhere and you will have to watch where you walk to ensure you don't step on it. Galapagos sea lion harems bask in the sand, iguanas are camouflaged, and you'll be just a couple of meters from endemic bird nests.

Then, back onboard, you learn more from the three naturalist guides. Life on this luxury boat will include three sumptuous meals a day, a jacuzzi, wide sundeck, comfortable lounge bar, and spacious cabins.

Back on land, Imbabura will be equally enchanting, a valley of boutique towns and haciendas that showcase the rural vibrancy of history. Following your Galapagos cruise, your stay here will offer a gentle and luxurious step into history. This includes accommodation at Hacienda Zuleta, a weekend home of two Ecuadorian presidents that's been converted into arguably the country's most opulent experience.
