Grahan Village Trek from Kasol – Quaint Village & Hidden Waterfalls

Beautiful Grahan Village

Most of the people start their trekking in the Himalayas either with Triund or Kasol Kheerganga as these are the most popular treks among youngsters. In my case, I started with Nag Tibba & Triund was my second trek. After that, I moved on to do the difficult treks like Hampta Pass , Bali Pass , etc and in the meantime, I never thought of exploring Kasol. But I’d heard a lot about Kasol, Kheerganga, and Parvati valley as they were quite famous and scenic too. So I wanted to explore this region but I was not exactly looking for any crowded place like Kheerganga. I was looking for some place where I could stay for a day or 2 and experience the local culture. I did some research and found a village called Grahan. After reading a few blogs, I decided to go for the Grahan village trek near Kasol.

Reaching Kasol

This time two of my school friends from Agra (Ankush & Nishant) were also accompanying me on the trek. We began the overnight journey from Delhi to Kasol by a comfortable Volvo bus. It took around 12 hours and our bus dropped us at Bhuntar. Bhuntar is a small town situated 50 km from Manali on the Mandi-Manali highway. The Kullu Manali airport is situated here and the route to Parvati Valley also bifurcates from here. From Bhuntar we took a shared taxi to Kasol and reached there in an hour.

There are only 2 or 3 buses which directly go to Kasol from Delhi, the rest of the buses drop at Bhuntar and from there one has to take another conveyance to reach Kasol. Local buses and taxis are easily available from Bhuntar.

Exploring Kasol – Mini Israel of India

Our hotel was pre-booked and it was Hotel Blue Diamond . While going towards the hotel we noticed a cafe named “cafe sunshine” , which was looking good. We were famishing by that time as we did not eat anything during the bus journey, so instead of going to the hotel for check-in, we entered into that cafe to have our breakfast there. We thoroughly enjoyed our first meal at Kasol by having hot chocolate, sandwiches, and burgers. After filling our tummies, we arrived at our hotel and relaxed for an hour. By noon, we took our day packs and started exploring the town.

Kasol is a quite small but very vibrant town having several cafes, clubs, street market for shopping, and a plethora of treks. Kasol, settled around the gushing Parvati river, has a different vibe as compared to other hill stations. The place has become quite popular among youngsters and due to which it remains too much crowded on weekends and holidays. However, one can still feel the original vibe of this place by visiting on any weekday when the crowd is lesser.  We did the same and we were just loving the atmosphere there.

After exploring the streets and a few shops, we took the Chalal village trail , which begins after crossing the bridge over the Parvati river. The village is a 2 km walk from there and the entire trail goes along the Parvati river. We had a wonderful time while walking on that trail because of the strong flow of the river and the pleasant weather.  It took just half an hour to reach the village.

We explored and tried some cafes, where we had our lunch, and then returned to Kasol. Now we took a shared taxi to visit the famous Gurudwara, Manikaran Sahib, which was situated just 5 km from Kasol. Later in the evening, we came back and tried several new cuisines at cafes like Moon dance, Bhoj, and Rainbow . After satisfying our tummies, we came back to our hotel and packed our bags for the next day’s plan of Grahan village trek.

Trek to Grahan Village from Kasol

About grahan village.

Grahan is a tiny village situated in the Parvati valley at an elevation of around 2300 m. Known for its scenic landscapes and the nearby waterfalls, the village also serves as a first stop or campsite to the trekkers going towards Sar pass or Khauli Pass. The trek is easy and the total trek distance from Kasol to Grahan village is 8 km. The village people are calm natured like other pahadi locals. Though there is no network available at the village but people have developed homestays equipped with basic amenities at that offbeat location. One can have a very comfortable stay with a unique experience in those homestays. The villagers have also banned the consumption of alcohol there. A black colored small insect is found there and the locals consider it their local deity and worship that insect.

Beginning the Grahan Village Trek

We had our breakfast at our hotel itself and then bought some eatables to have it as a refreshment while on the trek. We took the right turn from the main bridge in the market and walked towards an old iron bridge. The trail starts from there itself. The route was an unmetalled and uneven road and it continued up to 2 km. There were a few cars and bikes that were going in the same direction as we were going. Later, we found out that they were locals. The walk was along the Grahan Nalah that further gets mixed into the Parvati river.

We continued the walk for 2 km and then crossed a bridge made by 2 trees, to reach the left side of the stream. The trail was flat and quite easy. We were walking very comfortably without putting much effort. The views were also good as the region was full of greenery.  As we moved inside the valley, the forest became dense. After walking for around 2 hours, we arrived at a canteen settled on the way and there we had our lunch. I had an intuition that we have completed half of the trek and it got true after confirming from the canteen owner. We ordered Maggi, Nutella toast, and Omelet. The food was good and at a reasonable price.

Starting trail of Grahan Village Trek

Resuming the trek after lunch is always difficult. We were also feeling lazy but we had to resume as the clouds were approaching us and encircling the valley. The Grahan village was around 2 hours from there as told by the canteen owner. We took our bags and started walking towards our destination. After passing a campsite, we arrived at a point where the route was bifurcating. We got confused a bit but then some locals told us that both the routes are going to the same place, viz, Grahan. We took the left one and continued.

The clouds were getting black and they were in a full mood to make us drenched. The last hour of the trek was a bit difficult as the trail was steep and zig-zag. It wasn’t a big deal though. We did it easily and reached the village by 3 pm. The village was situated in a very scenic location. We explored a bit and found one homestay named “The Mount View” . After freshening up, we were served tea with pakodas, my favorite thing on a trek. It literally made my day. We had those delicious pakodas and then we started roaming around the village. There were a few hippy cafes, an old temple, and a 100 years old tree which was considered sacred.

In the evening, the weather turned bad and it started raining. So we returned back to the homestay and enjoyed the evening by playing Uno and Mafia. The view from the homestay was gorgeous. We could see the entire valley. The dinner was served by 8 pm and we enjoyed the yummy pahadi food. While having dinner, the uncle at the homestay told us about the nearby waterfalls and we made our plan to visit the same by early morning.

Exploring waterfalls, Trek down to Kasol and Depart for Delhi

We woke up to fresh and chilly morning by 5 am. The mornings on the mountains are probably the best and if it is the post-rain morning then it becomes a “cherry on the top”. Everything looked so fresh by that time and the water droplets decorated the leaves and enhanced the overall beauty. We quickly freshened up, had a piping hot tea, and ventured out into the forest to visit the waterfalls. The homestay uncle was accompanying us as we were not aware of the correct route. We moved into the same valley which was visible from the homestay. There was a mud trail and it was narrow.

As told by the uncle, there were a total of 3 waterfalls situated according to the size. Like the 1st one was the smallest one, the 2nd one was slightly big and the 3rd one was the biggest and beautiful too. As we reached near the 1st waterfall, we noticed a water stream which we had to cross and pass through the dense bushes. We could recall the episodes of Man vs Wild :p The 1st waterfall was around 2 km from the homestay. It was good. We clicked a few photos and moved on to visit the 2 nd waterfall.

While moving towards the waterfalls

The 2nd and the 3rd waterfall were situated quite close to each other. We took the trail and reached there in the next 15 minutes. But we didn’t stop at the 2nd waterfall because we were excited to see the main one. We then crossed a narrow bridge over a stream and the 3rd waterfall was in front of us. Surrounded by lush greenery, the waterfall was big and magnificent. While looking at the top of the waterfall, it seemed as it was fed by two different streams. We had a great experience by sitting near the waterfall and listening to its music. We came back to our homestay by 9 AM and then had our breakfast.

The second waterfall

Now it was the time to bid adieu to Grahan village and the people there. We wanted to stay for one more night but we were short of holidays. Soon, we started descending back to Kasol through the same route. It took just 3 hours to reach there. We had our lunch and by late noon, we departed for Bhuntar, from where we had to catch our bus to Delhi.

The Uncle - Owner of the homestay

The next morning, we were back in Delhi to follow the same old routine. But this same old routine is the thing which keeps us motivated to visit the mountains, again and again, right?

The overall trip was quite relaxing and soothing. We all had a good experience by exploring Kasol, trying out new cafes, trekking to Grahan village, staying at the homestay, and of course the waterfalls. It’s an easy trek and can be done in a weekend’s time. The guide is not necessary if you have prior trekking experience. The route is well marked and used by locals daily. The Parvati Valley is home to various such villages and trails. I will be visiting soon to explore other wonders of this valley.

Happy Trails 🙂

Grahan Village Trek Near Kasol – An Untouched Gem of Parvati Valley

Beyond the hustle and bustle of the most happening town of Kasol lies hidden among the hills, an ancient village of Grahan. The local claims it to be as old as the historic town of Malana. The beauty of Grahan Village is untouched by the tourists and trekkers (Written and visited in 2016) and is thus in its purest form. Unlike Malana, the people of Grahan Village are very friendly and the village is way much cleaner than Malana. Till 2014, when I visited it the first time, the village didn’t have any guest house or hotel. And just within the time span of 2 years, proper Homestays with modern amenities have come up. Though I feel it will make the village lose its original charm, it caters the basic need of a traveller. The only way to reach Grahan Village is by trekking from Kasol.

Grahan Village - Himachal

Note: It is(edit – ‘Was not’ till 2016) not a tourist spot. Don’t read on to find fancy attractions at this place. So, now the question is why should you head to Grahan?

Table of Contents

How to go for Grahan Village Trek from Kasol

  • The most advisable way to reach the village is to join any villager moving up to the village in the morning from Kasol.
  • Grahan Village is located at a distance of an 8-kilometre from Kasol, Grahn Village Trek would be classified as easy on the difficulty level. The trail begins at the Moon Dance Cafe near Kasol Bridge.
  • You need to take the lane beside the Moon Dance Cafe. Head straight past the spring towards the forest. The trail is well-marked in summers. Even during the winters when the trail may be covered in snow, there are more than enough signs for the trekkers heading to Grahan.
  • There are a few forest cabins that sell tea, coffee and Maggi for the travellers.

Here are a few appealing experiences for which you must take some effort to trek up till Grahan village off Kasol.

The beautiful Route passing to the Great Himalayan Forest

You will have to hike through the trail passing through the forest.  The forest will certainly charm you as the sunbeams dance on the ground through the net of the leaves of the age-old trees. Devour the beauty peacefully and don’t be in a hurry of reaching your destination. You may be lucky to find some mysterious symbols on the way. It is unknown whether the symbols have any meaning or had any use in ancient time. But, the typical symbols showing the natural elements certainly create curiosity in the onlookers’ mind.

Grahan Village trek

The fruits with the taste of the elixir

In a conversation with an orchard owner, about the best season to enjoy plums, she proudly boasted to have the best fruits that are exclusively sold only to the village people. She also enlightened us about the chemicals that are used to keep the fruits fresh till the tourist season and such fruits hardly retain the real taste. Whereas, the innocent people of Grahan wait till their orchards naturally bore rich fruits which are then sold in the village. So, don’t forget to hit this hamlet in the month of July-August to enjoy the real tastes of the fruits.

The sweetest people on the Earth

Grahan Village kasol

It was one of those worst weather months of Himachal and the snowstorm had made it impossible for the Sar Pass trekkers to cross the pass. The young trekkers were wet to the core and were freezing with cold. During such worst condition when all the tents had gone with the winds, the people of Grahan opened the doors of their homes to provide a safe night stay for them without expecting anything in return. These sweet people also provided the required warmth with the hot Himachali meal and the fire.

Both the times when I have been to this place, I have spent the best of the times in conversation with the villagers who can entertain you with the awe-inspiring stories of this ancient village. These people also have good knowledge about the herbal plants of the Himalayas. They would happily help you with the available herbs for any mentioned sickness. (Be responsible enough to pay them something in return of their kind gesture)

The smart rosy-cheeked kids can outsmart you in the games of football and volleyball. I would expect you to contribute something by exchanging some knowledge of science, geography or mathematics with them.

The Historic Temple at Grahan Village

The temple of the wife of Rishi Jamdagni, who is the lord of the village of Malana, is the iconic architecture of the village. The temple is opened during the celebrations and the people from nearby villages and even the town of Kullu gather near the temple for the same.

Grahan Village Homestay

The Grahan Village Homestays with the Stunning views just at 100 INR (written in 2016)

This place is truly meant for a traveller. The newly built homestays are located a little away from the village settlement. The balcony would provide you with the enchanting view of the fields and orchards protected by the snow-capped hills of the Himalayas. Get up early to witness the gleaming pinnacles at around 7 am. You can also witness the colourful sunset sitting in one of the grain fields.

There are even a few homestays located in the outskirts, giving you an experience of a forest-stays in the Himalayas.

Grahan Village Himachal Pradesh

The most authentic of the Himachali Food

The homestay owners can provide you with the Indian version of Italian, Israeli and Mexican food. Though you can binge on all kinds of fast food here, I would strongly recommend trying the Himachali Thali that would come straight from the smoking huts in the village. The food is not so spicy but has an authentic aroma and the taste of simple food cooked on firewood.

Grahan Village Homestay

  • A number of homestays have come-up now in the village of Grahan
  • Hot water and washrooms are available in all Homestays.
  • It is advisable to pre-book your stay during the summers.
  • Most homestays have shared/common washrooms but the newly constructed homestays have attached bathroom.
  • You can contact Ram/Rana who have not yet named their guest house. 9805932126, 9816794785 .
  • Please note that the numbers might not be available considering the bad weather or network problem.
  • Do not litter and behave irresponsibly.
  • The trail passes through a forest area where photography and loud music might cause a problem for you if you get caught by any forest guard.

Best time to visit Kasol & Grahan?

Hi Harry, if you wish to enjoy the snow, winter is the best time, or else, summers are quite pleasant to enjoy Kasol and Grahan

' src=

I have passed through Grahan two times on my way to sar pass. We camped beyond the nallah and did not have much opportunity to explore the village. I would like to go just upto Grahan and stay for a couple of days and return to Kasol. Does one need permission from forest authorities for hiking from kasol to grahan?

Hello, Vaidehi. You don’t need any permit to go up till unless you don’t disturb the serenity and wildlife of the place. Join the locals early in the morning and you won’t be asked any questions.

Kasol to Grahan: Trekking in the Remote Indian Himalayas

Last update on:

This guide is for the popular trekking route from the town of Kasol , to the remote hilltop village of Grahan . Kasol is a remote town high up in the Indian Himalayas, in the province of Himachal Pradesh. Not only is this town a hotspot for psy-trance parties and electronic music festivals, it also offers some of the most beautiful mountain scenery and hikes you will find anywhere on the planet!

Need to know

  • Our Rating: ★★★ ★ One of the nicest villages to trek to in the area. Not to be missed.
  • Time: 2-3 days
  • Costs: approx. €20 per person
  • Difficulty: moderate — 3-5 hours hiking depending on fitness

We spent 2 weeks in Kasol in May of 2023, attending these music parties and spending the rest of the time hiking and exploring remote Himalayan villages! Another one of these remote village hikes is Rasol, read our article about that here .

Where is Grahan?

How to get to kasol, hiking to grahan from kasol, what to do in grahan village, getting back to kasol, accommodation in kasol, safety, concerns and useful information, what to do next.

Grahan village in the Himalayas

Grahan is a remote and isolated town, high up in the Himalayas of Himachal Pradesh in India. Getting to Grahan is only possible by foot, and hiking there takes the best part of half a day. It is situated south of Kasol , at an elevation of around 2300 metres , or 7700 feet above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the snow capped mountains of the Himalayas. It is the last town people visit before continuing on to the popular Sar Pass, part of a multi day trek in the area.

Situated on the edge of the Kanawar wildlife sanctuary , this remote town is entirely self-sufficient, with supplies only being brought from Kasol once a day by foot, or by donkey. With power only being supplied intermittently by generators, and zero phone reception, Grahan is a place where you can really escape the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Via New Delhi / Chandigarh

There are over a dozen direct buses to and from the capital of New Delhi every day. These buses are mostly overnight sleeper buses, and take around 12-14 hours in total to travel the 500 kilometre route, stopping at the city of Chandigarh on the way. Tickets are available for purchase online, and often sell out days in advance. Make sure you book in advance if you intend to use this option. You can check bus ticket prices to and from Kasol via Delhi here.

Via Local Bus

If, like us, you are exploring the surrounding area in towns such as Shimla , or Manali , you can utilise the local bus companies to travel around Himachal Pradesh. From Manali or Shimla, you need to take a local bus first to Bhuntar . From Bhuntar there are local buses every 30 minutes or so that go directly to Kasol. Buses leave from the Bhuntar Bus Stand , and travel up into the Parvati Valley, stopping at Kasol and other towns on the way. If you prefer AC and a more comfortable ride, you can book buses from Manali, Shimla or Bhuntar to Kasol on 12go.asia here.

Cows are frequent dinner guests in Kasol

The trail to Grahan starts from the centre of Kasol town. You follow Grahan Street on google maps, passing the goSTOPS Kasol hostel at the edge of town. At this point the trail becomes a rough stone path just wide enough for one car. From here onwards the only vehicles on the path will be 4x4s shuttling people to the start of the main ascent to Grahan at the end of the road. I chose to hike this first part on foot, which is about 5 kilometres long . It is relatively flat and easy going, through temperate woodland flanked by a small river. You will pass a few campsites and remote accommodations before finally arriving at the base of the main ascent after about 1 hour .

Donkeys carrying supplies up the trail to Grahan

Once you reach the end of this road, you will find a few small shack style cafes selling snacks and drinks. I took the opportunity to purchase a pack of biscuits and drink a nice hot chai before starting the ascent proper. This area is also the point where the 4x4s carrying supplies and people can’t go any further. All supplies for Grahan village are carried up from this point by porters or donkeys. Seeing the porters carry multiple gas canisters up the mountain on their backs really is something that has to be seen to be believed. The people that make this trek multiple times a day must be in incredible physical shape!

The final ascent

From this point you start the main ascent to Grahan. This final 2 kilometres of distance includes more than 75% of the vertical ascent, taking you up about 500 metres vertically. The trail is mostly rocky and very steep, so slow and steady progress is key here. You will pass some farmers’ tents on the way, past fields of crops and livestock. After about an hour or two, depending on your fitness, you will begin to see the buildings of Grahan. Once the path beneath you becomes paved, you’ve arrived at Grahan village.

The 4x4 trail towards the ascent to Grahan

Grahan village is a mixture of local houses, accommodations and a few restaurants. There are a multitude of accommodations available, of varying quality levels.

I stopped for a late lunch at Old Krishna Cafe on my way up into Grahan, and the food was delicious. I ordered the veg thali, and whilst it took almost 45 minutes to arrive at the table, it was worth the wait. The owner told me all the food is made from scratch hence the long waiting times. The clientele were a mixture of travellers from different parts of the globe, all enjoying the free wifi offered here to reconnect with the outside world.

Note: When I visited, Old Krishna Cafe was the only place in town with reliable and constant wifi connection. So if you have to get in touch with friends and family when you reach Grahan, this is the place to do so.

I stayed on the far south side of Grahan in The Space Station , right on the edge of the national park. They had 2 rooms total when I visited, and both were available. I paid 1000 rupees per night , roughly 10 euros , for a spacious double room with ample blankets and a private bathroom. The homestay was run by some ex-tech workers from Bangalore that moved up here to escape the city life. The guys really made me feel welcome and at home, and I can’t recommend the place enough. After the sun went down we lit a bonfire, and watched the stars and satellites moving overhead until the early hours of the morning.

My room at the Space Station homestay

Hiking to Grahan Waterfalls

The next morning I had breakfast and coffee with the owners, before setting off further into the national park to take a swim in the local waterfalls . The waterfalls are about a 1.5 kilometre walk out of town, along a relatively flat trail. I didn’t see another person the entire 3 hours I was hiking to and from the waterfalls; this place is really really remote! After a refreshing morning dip in the glacial melt water, it was a quick 30 minute walk back to Grahan for a second coffee before hiking back to Kasol.

The start of the path leading to the waterfalls

Once you’ve explored all that Grahan has to offer, it’s time to begin the descent back down towards Kasol. This is much easier going than going in the other direction up the mountain. Expect to spend around 30 minutes reaching the 4×4 track, then another hour or so to get back to Kasol.

Once back it’s time for a hot chai and some delicious steamy momos to restore some lost calories from the hike. I frequented Usha Dhaba on Grahan Street many times during my stay in Kasol. They offer big plates of momos, both veg and non-veg for around 100 rupees , roughly 1 euro . Served with a spicy sauce and sour cream, they really are tasty.

Hot momos and chai from Usha Dhaba restaurant

After replenishing your energy reserves, it’s time for a hot shower and a rest. Kasol has accommodation for all budgets. For budget travellers, the goST O PS Hostel Kasol is modern, clean and most of all cheap! If you are travelling as a couple on a budget, we recommend the recently opened Chander Homestay . It offers twin rooms for around 1500-2000 rupees or 15-20 euros per night. And for those looking for some Himalayan luxury, there is the Royal Castle Hotel . This is one of the nicest places to stay in Kasol, and rooms will set you back about 3000-4000 rupees , around 30-40 euros per night.

Kasol town

  • Grahan is a very remote village . Before starting the trek to Grahan you should be aware that if anything happens to you, the nearest help in Kasol is a few hours away. There are no roads for ambulances and police cars, and most of the trail has no phone reception or wifi.
  • Make sure your friends and family know where you are going before you start the hike, and arrange to check in with them before leaving.
  • Respect the locals . Grahan is a village where local families live and work in the mountains. Be respectful, and don’t go into any buildings or houses that you don’t have permission to. Stick to the trodden path at all times to avoid trespassing into locals farm land.
  • Hotels and homestays cannot be booked in advance online in Grahan unlike Kasol, so do your research before arriving on where you want to stay. Once you arrive in Grahan just go into the homestay and ask for a room.
  • Adversely, hotels in Kasol get booked up very quickly in advance . Plan your trip before you arrive and book your hotel now!
  • When spending money abroad we use the WISE international debit card . You can withdraw up to 200 euros in cash per month free of charge. After that, you only pay a very low withdrawal fee.
  • Travel insurance is a must for any extreme activities abroad, especially in Asia. Although problems rarely arise, you want to be covered in the case that they do. We use SafetyWing and recommend it for anyone travelling around the world .

There are a number of other popular treks in the area of Kasol. One is the Kheerganga Trek , further up the Parvati Valley. This trek offers natural hot springs, snow capped mountains and breathtaking vistas. You can do this trek as part of a group tour, including all accomodation and meals for the 2 day duration. Check availability for the Kheerganga Trek here.

The start of the trek to nearby Rasol

For a similar trek to Grahan there is Rasol village. I trekked to Rasol village from Kasol back in May of 2023, and you can read the full write up here on the blog .

kasol to grahan village trek distance

Hey Himalayas

Grahan Trek

Grahan trek overview.

Grahan village trek is an exciting short trek and would take you through some of the best scenic surroundings of Kasol town, where it’s located. Grahan village is a very small village located over the Parvati Valley with a decent gradient of upto 7,700 metres above sea level. You would follow the stream of Parvati river during the trek which would continue from the Kasol bus stop.

Sar Pass is a perfect trek for beginners. It’s apt for those who want to experience all kinds of terrain. The trek starts from Kasol, which is a haven for backpackers from around the globe, and attracts large weekend crowds; many of which are the city youth, eager for a slice of the bohemian lifestyle. To cater to the tourists, the shops are well-stocked with both, necessities and luxuries.

There are plenty of stay options – both, pocket-friendly and high-end, and one can choose from Israeli, Continental, Indian, and Chinese cuisines.

➤ Trail Information

Day 1: kasol to grahan village.

  • Altitude: 1,700 m to 2,350 m
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Time taken: 4-5 hours

The trail from Kasol to Grahan is a marked one through forests, following the Grahan  nalah . It starts from the centre of Kasol and keeps to the true left of the  nalah . The trail is easy to navigate and is frequently used by villagers. The gradient being gentle, one can effortlessly cover much distance in a matter of hours.

The trail crosses the  nalah  and continues before abruptly becoming rocky and climbing uphill, away from the right bank of the river. One may be led to believe that this is not the right path, but one must not go astray.

Soon, the trees will give way to grass and shrubs. One can see some fields as well and can spot bright-colored tarpaulins. These are makeshift stalls with vendors selling refreshments like tea, omelets, and rhododendron syrup! Rhododendrons (locally known as  buras ) grow in forests that receive snowfall. Their bright red flowers bloom in spring and are collected to make syrup. Rhododendron petals can be eaten whole and the syrup can be mixed with water to make a refreshing drink (I discovered the benefits of rhododendron on my  Har-ki-dun  trip, where I happily chewed on a liberal amount of the tangy petals and felt energized immediately).

After a steep climb of about an hour, look out for the village of Grahan, situated on the top of a hill. Camp there for the night. Accommodation is available in guest houses and there is a camping ground after crossing the village. There is a satellite phone in the village, and one may also get network coverage on cell phones.

Day 2: Grahan to Min Thach

  • Altitude: 2,350 m to 3,400 m
  • Distance: 7 km

From the camping ground at Grahan, a trail goes north, climbing up gently. Villagers use this path often in the morning. This is the way to Min Thach.

After walking for a while, the view opens up and a guide can point to you Min Thach, Nagaru, and Sar Top on the mountain to the right. The trail also becomes steeper and leads into the woods.

After some time, you enter a dense forest; the thick canopy lets in very little sunlight. The slope becomes steeper still and the path is confusing in places.

After toiling for a few hours, the forest opens up to a grassy patch on a ridge. This is Min Thach (“Thach “  means meadow in the local language; much like ‘ Kanda ’ or ‘ Bughyal; ’ it is where the villagers bring their cattle to graze).

To the north-west, across the horizon, stretch Chanderkhani and other ranges. The ridge-line continues to the east and rises up to a cliff covered in snow, on which sits the camp site of Nagaru (a guide can point it out).

To the south-east of the ridge, lie forests. There is some cleared space to pitch a tent. A seasonal vendor’s hut may be found here; it sells tea, coffee and omelettes. Nearby is also a tap that supplies potable water. One can camp here for the night; the ridge will protect you from strong winds. A trench should be dug around the tents so as to allow the natural drainage of water in the event of rain, hail, or snow.

Keeping one day to cover the distance from Grahan to Min Thach. It allows time for the body to acclimatise and warm-up for the trek ahead. However, seasoned trekkers can also start early from Kasol, break for an early lunch at Grahan, and reach Min Thach post-noon.

Day 3: Min Thach to Nagaru

  • Altitude: 3,400 m to 3,800 m
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Time taken: 4-6 hours

From Min Thach, as the crow flies, Nagaru seems not far, but the route doesn’t go straight up the ridge-line; instead, it veers up to the south (looking up at the cliffs, towards the right) and goes into the woods. Depending on the weather, one may find snow here. It is always advisable to start early, for the weather is generally favourable before noon and the snow becomes more slippery later into the day.

After walking for a while, one comes to another ridge-line – a rocky one overlooking a grassy meadow down in the distance. The ridge goes steeply up to the left (eastward), to the cliffs, atop which Nagaru sits. The path to Nagaru goes up this ridge and is well-marked for some hundred metres, after which the tree-line ends and gives way to patches of grass and shrubs.

If there is snow, then great caution has to be exercised, for this is the trickiest and riskiest part of the trek – the slope falls steeply to the valley below and may be slippery! The trail, even if marked, may not be visible in snow. Here, having a guide and a trekking pole is of paramount importance; waterproof gloves will also come in handy. An ice-axe may be used by the guide to chisel away snow for getting a foothold. The trekker would also need to employ proper technique – digging into the snow with his toes, and only once firm foothold is established, putting the other foot ahead in the same fashion.

After a couple of hours, you finally reach a welcoming patch of flatland on top of the hill – this is Nagaru camp site. It feels like a different world! Facing north, one can see magnificent mountains rising steeply across the Parvati valley – with the town of Manikaran also visible. In the di stance, to the north-west lie Chanderkhani and the ranges of the Beas valley. Down below, to the left, one can spot the campsite of Min Thach and the village of Grahan. To the south is a vast expanse of snow rolling up the hill. It is in this direction that one has to continue to reach Sar Pass. However, neither the pass nor the top of the mountain is visible yet.

Though erratic, network coverage is available in some spots. A water tap can be seen near the western edge of the cliff and it may or may not be running, which is why water has to be carried from Min Thach. Camp must be established soon as the winds are very strong and the temperature dips very quickly after sunset.

It gets very cold at night due to the wind chill factor and sometimes the winds are so strong that tents get blown away! It is advisable to retire early, to protect yourself from the cold. Besides, the next day involves an early start.

Day 4: Nagaru – Sar Pass – Biskeri Thach

  • Altitude: 3,800 m – 4,200 m – 3,350 m
  • Distance: 14 km
  • Time taken: 6-8 hours

Wake up before dawn. The previous day’s trek would have acclimatised you for today’s long trek – the same techniques need to be employed. The climb to Sar Pass follows the ridge-line in a southward direction and is steep in some stretches. Feel free to keep up a slow but steady pace as you climb through snow at high altitude.

The snow is easier to walk on and the heavenly surroundings keep one’s spirits high. After climbing up the hill seen from Nagaru, a higher hill that has to be climbed comes into view. A third of the distance to Sar Pass has been covered. To one’s right falls the cliff steeply to the valley below, the ridge is sharper and the climb steeper; so one must be careful. If there has been good snow recently, the climb is similar to what mountaineers are shown doing using ice-axes and crampons!

After climbing for what seems like a long time, one reaches the top of the hill and a sigh of relief and joy escapes as one beholds the view ahead. From the image searches on the web, one would know that this is Sar Pass! Sar Pass derives its name from ‘ Sar, ’ which means ‘pond,’ but the ‘Sar’ is mostly frozen till late in summer. The pass is not the kind one would have in mind – there is no saddle in the mountain range to cross.

The view opens up eastward – the lofty peaks of the Tosh valley are now visible as well. To the south extends the white blanket of snow, flanked by snow-capped mountains – the highest of which seems to be within reach. However, it would take a couple of hours to summit and much distance has to be covered before the next camp.

The onward route moves away from high ground, to the south-east, following the contours of the hill. With deep valleys on the left, one has to walk carefully. After some time, the path climbs up to a ridge running across, and one can see a flag tied to a ‘Trishul’ at the top. The slope is very steep in the last stretch and buried in the snow, one may find a rope, which can be held on to while climbing. This is a pass in the truer sense.

As one reaches the top, the view is exhilarating. After a sharp drop of some hundred feet, unfolds a beautiful valley ahead (This was the highlight of my trek – I had braved snowfall and poor visibility, and my excitement reached a zenith when I reached the top and saw the surreal sight before me!). As one is soaking in the heavenly beauty of the place, a realisation suddenly hits – there is no way to get down the hundred feet drop but by sliding!

The slide is the most fun and completely harmless as long as some precautions are taken – loose belongings (phones, goggles) should be kept inside the bag and the legs should be kept tight together and not be dug in the snow if one wishes to slow down speed; for this, elbows kept firmly by the side of the trunk can be pushed back into the snow.

The slide takes one as far as a kilometre (depending on the snow conditions) to a gentler slope of the valley. After walking for some time, you come across another slope in the valley (not as steep as the first one) and depending upon the snow conditions, you can choose to slide again, for longer than a kilometre, till you reach a level ground. The third change in slope (steeper than the second) comes not long after, and can be covered by sliding again (if there is snow).

The slide will take you past snow covered trees, through a valley that has now narrowed, and bring into view to the left, a lovely meadow. This is the camp site of Biskeri Thach, which is reached after crossing a few streams.

Biskeri presents a sublime view of the pine forests, the majestic mountains and lovely grasslands. The villages of Tosh, Pulga-Tulga, Bursheni, and Nakthan can be seen in the valley below. The grassland of Bun-Buni lies atop a ridge to the north-east. Nearby is a waterfall that comes down from the mountains that form a backdrop behind Biskeri. There is no dearth of water as a stream runs beside the camp site and there also is a water tap. Network coverage is also available.

Day 5: Biskeri Thach to Bursheni

  • Altitude: 3,350 m to 2,400 m
  • Time taken: 4-5 hours

From Biskeri, a steep path goes down, keeping to the left of the stream. After some time, cross the stream and walk across a plot of land with fencing. The trail ends here, so one has to go through the plot (search for a breach in the fence) to find the trail again, which leads into the dense forest.

There are many trails here and only a guide can tell the right one, which keeps to the north-east. After descending in the dense forest for a good time, spot a crossing on a stream, with a camp site across. However, to get to the crossing is tricky! You have to rappel down twenty feet of rock with the help of a rope. After crossing the stream on wooden planks, climb up to the camp site that has a few vendor tents. The path to the village of Pulga goes to the left of the camp site.

Soon after, one comes to grassland fringed by trees, which is one of the most beautiful places in the entire trek. The path continues through a dry channel into the woods, the descent becoming steep again. In some time, one reaches a clearing in the forest where trees have been felled. The path continues to go down past a fenced property, and reaches a lumber yard belonging to the forest department. The track goes past, following a water pipeline that takes you to the village of Pulga.

The twin villages of Pulga and Tulga are separated by a stream. From Tulga, one crosses a bridge on the river Parvati, which has been dammed ahead for a hydroelectric power project, to reach the village of Bursheni. Bursheni is the last village in the Parvati valley connected by road (a bumpy one) and is used as the road head for treks to Kheerganga, Mantalai Lake, Pin Parvati Pass, and for treks in the Tosh valley. You can get buses or taxis to Kasol, Bhuntar and other places from here.

Thus comes to end a trek, the memories of which would be cherished for long.

  • Backpack (40-60 litres):  Backpack with sturdy straps and supporting frame. Rain cover for backpack is essential.
  • Daypack (20 litres):  It is mandatory to carry a daypack if you choose to offload your backpack. If you decide to carry your backpack, day pack is not required.
  • Trekking shoes:   No sports shoes. The shoes need to have soles with good grip and ankle support. Do not wear a new shoe to a trek. It might cause blisters. Before bringing them to trek, wear it for a week to make it softer. We recommend FORCLAZ 100, 500, and 600.
  • Socks (3 pairs):  2 cotton pairs, 2 woolen pairs (mostly to be used on campsites and while sleeping. Keep them dry.)

CLOTHES – REGULAR

  • Trek pants (3 pairs including the one you are wearing):  We highly endorse synthetic quick-dry pants as they are light. Plus, when it’s cold you can wear one over the other. While trekking a pair is what you would carry apart from the worn. You could keep the third pair for your return journey. Alternative : Cotton pant with many pockets / Track pants are comfortable too. Please do not get Denim jeans, shorts or 3 quarters to trek.
  • Collared t-shirts (3 pairs including the one you are wearing): Preferably light, full sleeve t-shirts. The collar and the sleeves prevent sun burns on the neck and arms. Avoid loud colors that would distract birds and animals.
  • Full sleeve woolens   (2 pairs including the one you are wearing): We endorse fleece over wool as it is light weight, compact and warm.
  • Thick jacket:  Carry 1 hollow full sleeve windproof jacket/down jacket
  • Thermal inners:  1 pair of lightweight, upper and lower (optional)

ACCESSORIES

  • Raincoat/poncho:  A lightweight poncho is preferred as it covers your rucksack as well from top. Raincoat can also be used as wind proof when required. Enquire Indiahikes for availability of ponchos at the base camp.
  • Balaclava:  The cap must cover your ears and neck. You may also use scarves.
  • Synthetic handgloves:  Ensure that the gloves are waterproof.
  • Suncap:  1 pair of nice warm gloves required, fleece or woolen. 1 pair of water proof/resistant, wind proof gloves. You get very thin inner gloves nowadays. You may get one of those to use layering.
  • Sunglasses:  Curved ones will cover your eyes well. No blue coloured sunglass — they don’t block UV. Blacks, greens, browns are fine. Avoid multi tone sunglasses. Sunglasses prevent snow blindness. Sunglasses are mandatory for this trek.People who wear spectacles, choose one of these – contact lenses, photo chromatic glasses, or if either of the above is not possible, wear your spectacles and carry a big sunglass that can be worn over your spectacles.
  • Toiletries  (Sunscreen – SPF 40+, moisturiser, light towel, lipbalm/chap stick, small soap, toilet paper, wet tissue)
  • Repair kit  (needle & thread)
  • Headlamp/LED torch:  Mandatory
  • Camera:  Carry all accessories – spare batteries, charger, etc.
  • Cutlery:  Carry a plate, spoon, coffee mug & a lunch box. We insist on trekkers getting their own cutlery for hygiene reasons. To save weight,  you may use your lunch box to have food in it and also carry it.
  • Water bottles:  2 bottles, 1 Litre each. Packaged drinking water bottles like Aquafina, Bisleri and others are not allowed.
  • Trekking pole:  Trekking pole is mandatory.
  • Plastic covers:  While packing, use plastic bags to compartmentalize things and carry few extra plastic bags for wet clothes.

PERSONAL MEDICAL KIT – Mandatory

  • Diamox – 10 tablets (to prevent AMS)
  • Crocin – 6 tablets (fever)
  • Avomine – 4 tablets (motion sickness)
  • Avil 25mg – 4 tablets (allergies)

  • Gauze – 1 small roll
  • Band aid – 10 strips
  • Cotton – 1 small roll
  • ORS – 10 packets
  • Betadine or any antiseptic cream
  • Moov spray (aches, & sprains)

MANDATORY DOCUMENTS

Carry original and photocopy of government photo identity cards with you (driving license, voters ID, etc.)

Tips & Advice

  • Avoid sports shoes. They are ill suited for trekking. We recommened FORCLAZ 100, 500, and 600. Wear the shoes for a week prior to the trek to avoid shoe bites/blisters on slope.
  • We highly endorse synthetic quick-dry pants. They are light and can be worn in layers when it gets cold. Cotton pants/track pants are an alternative.
  • Jeans, shorts and 3/4 pants are not suitable for trekking.
  • Light full sleeve collared t-shirts are the best option. Avoid round neck t-shirts which exposes the neck during cold weather and may cause sun burns during the day.
  • We endorse fleece jackets over wool as it is light weight, compact and warm. It is better to layer your clothing with multiple light sweaters than to carry one thick heavy jacket.
  • Thermal inners are optional for those who are more sensitive to the cold.
  • You may use scarves as an alternative to balaclavas.
  • People who wear spectacles, choose one of these – contact lenses, photo chromatic glasses, or if either of the above is not possible, wear your spectacles and carry a big sunglass that can be worn over your spectacles.
  • We insist on trekkers getting their own cutlery for hygiene reasons.
  • While packing, use plastic bags to compartmentalize things and carry few extra plastic bags for wet clothes.

Flexibility Exercises

Flexibility is the ability of the muscles and tendons to relax and stretch easily.  It determines the amount of movement your bones can make in any direction around joints such as shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees.  Stretching improves your posture and helps to prevent low back pain.  Stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors, and lower back muscles regularly promotes relaxation in the tissues, reducing the strain on your back.  On your trek, it is important that you arrive on the slopes with your muscles relaxed. Carrying a backpack, however light, can become a strain after a while. These exercises will help you be in good shape before the trek.

Warm-up stretching exercises loosen tendons, increase blood circulation, and help prevent injuries during your workouts or any activity.  Cool-down stretching helps relieve muscle soreness and tightness.

Located in the town of Kasol, Grahan village is a beautiful hidden jewel of Himachal Pradesh, set at an altitude of 7700 ft above sea level. The Grahan Village trek from Kasol is the only option to reach this quaint village. The journey of walking into the pathless woods with the thunderous roar of Parvati River in your ears is a delight for every nature fanatic. Inhabited by a population of only 350 people, the place is an absolute delight for avid trekkers.

The trek to reach Grahan village will take around 4-5 hours on an average with a couple of halts. Overall, the hike is pretty easy even for a rookie trekker. This village also acts as a base for trekkers hiking towards Sar Pass. Due to this, the route of Grahan trek is pretty well marked with red arrows all along the way. You will find various stunning spots to bask in the beauty of the nature and when tired can have a rest under the shadow of the pine trees.

The villagers of Grahan village are very welcoming and hospitable. You will be delighted to see them doing their daily activities. The villagers are also honey-collectors and many of them trek into the dense forest of high-mountains with huge rifles to shoo away bears lurking around the honeycomb. The taste of the honey is really different due to the nectars bees collect from high-mountain wildflowers. The best season to do Grahan village trek is during summers and autumn season, as the lush greenery is well-lit during these months.

Day 1 : Kasol - Grahan Village (9 km | 4-5 hrs) The trek to Grahan village starts from Kasol, and one would roughly take 4 hrs-5 hrs to cover a distance of 9kms. The trail begins right before the bridge that falls before the Kasol central bus-stand. The track is more or less marked-out with red arrows throughout, but still, there is a fair chance that you will get lost, aesthetically. During the hike, one would go through dense forests intermittent with the sound of birds and the buzzing of bees there is one element that won’t leave you all the way- Parvati river. One would also cross two wooden bridges, and by the time one would come across the second bridge, it would mark the halfway point of the trek. It is only in the last 150 meters of the hike that one would start to see the houses in the village and what a view it is. Mostly the houses are built in a traditional way and some of them are almost 200-250 years old. Roam around the village and play along with the kids who will be found at every nook and corner of the village. At night, have your piping hot meal around the warmth of the bonfire while listening to the sound of silence.

Day 2 : Grahan Village - Kasol (9 km | 4-5 hrs) Today, rise up to ascend towards sunrise viewpoint, from where the majestic views of the delightful Sar pass mountain ranges will spellbind you with its beauty. Then, after a tasty breakfast, you will descend towards Kasol through the same lush forest route. You will take around 4-5 hours to complete the stretch of 9km. In the midway, take rest nearby the Grahan Nala, fill up your water bottles or just sit laid-back within the nature. On reaching Kasol, you can spend the rest of the day at your own leisure, before starting your onward journey.

Small Group Size

Our batch sizes are capped at 15 for smaller treks with the trek leader and trekker ratio of 1:8. This ratio, in our years of experience, has proven to deliver the best trekking experience for individuals as well as groups. Capping the size of the group ensures individual attention to each trekker so that no signs of distress or need during the trek go unnoticed. It also helps to form a more cohesive cohort with better group energy which helps define the rhythm and pace of days on the trek. As you go higher up on the BRS scale, since the stakes are higher, expeditions have an even smaller group size with the ratio of expedition leader to climber set at 1:2.

• A broad brim, waterproof and sun protective hat, and sunglasses with light-colored lenses for great contrast and visibility in shades.

• Sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher, reapply after every 2 hours.

A rain jacket or umbrella

• For warmer months, consider a compact travel umbrella, opt for a waterproof & windproof rain jacket for winters.

Day 1 - Kasol Camping -Chalal Hike

DAY 01: KASOL- CHALAL Misty morning, tall trees, untouched hills, and a breath of fresh air – this exactly what Kasol is! Upon reaching Kasol and a touch of walking, reach your campsite. Enjoy the greener and a happier space by the riverside. Take some rest and have your fill of breakfast. Once you're up and prepared , explore the ‘Little Amsterdam’ while making our thanks to Chalal. While a rehearse the lanes of Kasol, you'll notice many Israeli cafes and shops to shop for your souvenirs from. Gradually, we'll walk towards, what's referred to as Trance and Psychedelic party village- Chalaal. this tiny village is tucked within the conifer dense forest. The walk doesn’t take quite 2 hours hyphenated with breaks. One can sit at the top of the village admiring the sweetness of a fiercely flowing Parvati river. Later within the evening, come to the camping site; dance the night away round the bonfire while having taste-buds teasing dinner.

Day 2 Kasol To Grahan

Kasol-Grahan (9 KM) The trek to Grahan village starts from Kasol, and one would roughly take 4 hrs-5 hrs to hide a distance of 9kms. The trail begins right before the bridge that falls before the Kasol central bus-stand. The track is more or less marked-out with red arrows throughout, but still, there's a good chance that you simply will stray , aesthetically. During the hike, one would undergo dense forests intermittent with the sound of birds and therefore the buzzing of bees there's one element that won’t leave you all the way- Parvati river. One would also cross two wooden bridges, and by the time one would encounter the second bridge, it might mark the halfway point of the trek. It is only within the last 150 meters of the hike that one would start to ascertain the homes within the village and what a view it's . Mostly the homes are inbuilt a standard way and a few of them are almost 200-250 years old. Roam round the village and play along side the youngsters who are going to be found at every nook and corner of the village. At night, have your piping hot meal round the warmth of the bonfire while taking note of the sound of silence.

Day 3 Grahan To Kasol

The Bum Who Travels

Grahan Village Trek from Kasol : Happiness and More

I was returning to Parvati Valley in 2018 after a year long hiatus; chiefly because of the crowds that I’d seen around Kheerganga on an earlier trip. I must have thought of Kalga though when a trip was planned with friends. When we boarded our HRTC Himsuta Volvo from Delhi to Bhuntar, there was no decided place in our mind for where to go. And yet, since it was early morning in Kasol – and someone threw the name Grahan at us; we decided to give the 3 hour long hike/trek to Grahan Village a go!

Grahan

Our plan was flexible and the course of action depended on the time of our arrival in Kasol from Bhuntar. It was also complicated that the time of reaching of all 4 of us travelling from different parts of the country to reach Bhuntar could have been different. Luckily, our buses reached Bhuntar at the same time and we met at a small dhaba and had chai. The weather was chilly with the cloud cover and rain and we almost froze! After a hearty breakfast of aloo paranthas and more chai at the local dhaba, we boarded the next bus to Kasol and thus began another journey to Parvati valley.

Grahan

We got down near the bridge in Kasol; it was only 9 am and it was important to finish the morning duties since we had an 8 km hike coming up. Its not a nice idea to hike 4 hours with an unpleasant stomach. There was a new public loo in Kasol that came to the rescue. We decided to hike to the hidden village of ‘Grahan’ which is at a distance of around 8 kms from Kasol. The trek starts from close to the bridge in Kasol, and we just asked a few locals and they guided us on the right path. I was concerned about losing the way and reaching Thunja village but thankfully that did not happen!

Grahan

The weather was beautiful and the start of the hike was easy. There were a few shops at the start of the trek to Grahan, and some locals also said that they are also going to Grahan for some work. The Grahan Nallah flowed to our left; and with a spring in our step, we happily walked along the glittering waters of the Grahan nallah. It was enjoyable to be amidst the jungle, with the birdsongs and the gentle whispering of pines. A signboard to our left indicated path to Thunja village but the locals advised us to just continue straight.

Grahan

Its funny how human beings are more receptive to nature after the mobile network has died down.

Grahan

Leaving behind the sweltering heat of the plains, the mountain air felt magical to both the body and heart. We stopped for a bit to sit by the river and noticed that dark clouds were already gathering and it was better to reach early lest it began raining. We were accompanied by a group of locals who were planning to set up a dhaba on the way as the YHAI treks (to Sar Pass) were to start in a couple of days. I thanked our stars as I wanted the village to be quiet and peaceful. Call me selfish, but I wanted Grahan village to myself and sharing it with a larger group of trekkers did not seem to be very appealing.

Grahan

We chatted with the locals for a while and patted ourselves on our backs when they complemented us on our speed. Until this point, till the first bridge appears, the walk is pretty chilled out. We were lucky to have the locals with us who asked us to not take any of the bridges; especially one close to the start of the hike as it is a shortcut and a really difficult path. The trail (or road) finally ends and we can spot a slender bridge to cross Grahan nallah and reach the other side. One of the locals also owned a homestay in Grahan and we took the name, discussed the rates and said that we will surely head to his home!

Read :  Nature’s delights, from a secret village in Parvati Valley

Grahan

We had roughly covered around 3 kms in one hour and till here the hike is by the side of Grahan Nallah. After crossing the makeshift bridge across the stream, the trail goes deep in the forest to directly reach Grahan Village. In the jungle, there are signboards and arrows that appear every 10 minutes indicating the path to Grahan village so that hikers and trekkers don’t get lost.

Grahan

Now the ascent had began and the path had become narrow as well. After another hour of walking, we came across a mid-way point dhaba. It had began drizzling and we were hungry as well; and since it was lunch time we decided to break our trek here and eat. Given the whimsical weather in the mountains, it generally rains on the hike so these dhabas can act as a rain shelter if you travel unplanned like us and aren’t carrying your rain coats.

Grahan

We ate dal rice that turned out to be surprisingly tasty and after the rain stopped we resumed our trek to Grahan. After 30 odd minutes, there was a signboard that indicated the way to Grahan was another 1.5 kms. We were in a fix, both the paths led to Grahan village and we weren’t sure which one to take. With no one else around, we spoke amongst ourselves and decided to climb the left side trail. It was a really uphill trek at this point and after around 45 minutes, there was a tiny dhaba selling chai and biscuits.

Grahan

He said that Grahan was hardly 30 minutes from that point and that we had indeed taken the right path at the confusing place where the paths bifurcated. The weather was still quite cold due to the drop in temperature after the drizzle and we shivered whenever a breeze blew. The clock went past 3 in the afternoon and we finally spotted the first houses of Grahan.

Grahan

The last 2 kms of the hike are pretty steep and a real test of endurance. But one can’t complain because the higher you go, the mountain vistas keep getting better. The glistering white snow clad peaks (courtesy of the snowfall the previous night) with a background of blue and stormy skies stood in contrast with the dark green fores. The sweet symphony of the cascading waters of the Grahan nullah that feels like music from faraway makes up for the tiring hike.

Grahan

Just when you are tired to your toes and almost about to give up, the mysterious signboards (written in Hebrew) of the home stays start making an appearance. The trail is slightly confusing towards the end as the route bifurcates into two perpendicular paths, which actually lead to the same place. We took the shorter, but the much steeper route. The other is a longer, but comparatively less steeper and it reaches Grahan from the other side, via the village of Pulgi. The routes are well marked with arrows and signs which one can figure out if one looks closely.

Grahan

We immediately spotted the homestay that was owned by the local we had met on the way from Kasol to Grahan. The lady of the homestay was unsure about the availability of the rooms but asked us to sit and made delicious chai for us. At first glance, I really liked the happy and chilled out vibe of Grahan and coupled with the dazzling view, it felt like a peaceful heaven. Children played under the open skies and it seemed like a perfect world!

Grahan

Grahan is a pretty hamlet of wooden homes perched up in the valley at an altitude of around 2350 meters. The sight of trippy boards and hippie cafes welcomes you to this village which has almost as many home stays as the number of houses. The pleasant aroma of hash mixed up with the Hebrew-English-Hindi chatter leaves one wondering of ones whereabouts. You pinch yourself to be doubly sure that all this is happening in a remote village which is 10 kms off the road!

Grahan

Such is the sense of hospitality and entrepreneurial spirit of the Himachalis that they will make you feel welcome and arrange for all basic comforts even in the remotest regions of the state. Consumption of alcohol is prohibited in the village and defying the same invites a huge fine. The locals have made it pretty clear through multiple signboards throughout the way.

Grahan

As soon as we reached the first home in the village – which belonged to our local friends we had met on the way, we settled ourselves happily in the open air seating space. On one side was the village, and on the other was the pristine valley view with fantastic vistas of nature on offer. Our friends on the way had told us to stay at their homestay. We met the guys’ mother who made the most amazing chai with herbs from her garden. We were her fans already with the stunning chai she made!

Grahan

Irrespective of wherever we were staying, we told her we are eating food at her place only. Leaving our backpacks in her custody, we set out for a walk around Grahan village. The walk took us to the centre of the village which houses an immensely intricate temple, but entry for outsiders is not allowed (Like many other places in Kullu Valley). There were other homestays too in the village and all of them looked simple and inviting; since all the homes were made of wood in Grahan village.

Grahan

Typical village scenes with kids jumping all around, the female folk carrying fodder for their cattle were on offer for our cameras. Some of the houses had amazing views and we were lost in thoughts of how surreal it would be if one could get to stay in each of these houses and enjoy the stunning views. Most of the houses were traditional wooden structures. We walked to the periphery of the village and found ourselves on the alternate route to Grahan, via the village of Pulgi and Nattai. The villagers referred to this area as New Grahan.

Grahan

I was fascinated with the name Pulgi as I had been earlier to the mysterious village of Pulga on the other side of Parvati valley. The trail had fields on either sides and offered a calm environment for one to sit and relax. We sat there for a long time, chatting with the locals who were on their way back to the village after a day at the fields as well as fellow Israeli travellers who were returning from their day walks.

Grahan

The scene on the other side of Grahan was even more enchanting. There were swaying wheat and barley fields flanked with colourful trees, topped off by a pine and deodhar forest and finally given the finishing touches by the snow clad peaks. There were fewer homestays in this area and all of them seemed to be newly built. I briefly wondered if given a choice where I would have liked to stay!

Grahan

The sun was setting and we had to arrange a cake as it was one of the fellow travellers’ birthday eve. We asked around and found a café run by locals who were supposedly the cake experts of the village. Even though the time at hand was very less, the guys promised to make something for us and assured us that we will like it. I trust the locals in whatever they say so I was already happy about a job well done.

Grahan

It was getting very cold and we returned to our cozy wooden home stay with the coolest sitting area. We lounged for a while in the warm and cozy environs of the sitting room and asked for more chai. Dinner was ready and we went back to our dear auntys’ place to have our fill. Our local friend (setting up the dhaba) from the way was back by then and when he came to know that we are celebrating a birthday – he started a bonfire and promised to join us for the party after serving the rest of his guests.

Grahan

The bonfire ensued a huge gathering, given the chill in the air. Rest of the evening was spent chatting with people from different corners of the world, eating the most delicious cake ever, and soaking in the warmth of the bonfire. We were all quite tired after the trek and decided to call it a night. With dreams in our eyes and the million twinkling stars overhead, sleep was a cosy affair.

Grahan

Next morning, we were welcomed by the sunny mountain sun shining over the snowy mountains and it seemed like a perfect day for sun bathing. We relaxed in the sun for some time, had our breakfast and set out for the next destination for the day. There was no mobile network in Grahan and the birthday person wanted to receive birthday greetings; and hence we had to go back to Kasol for that! On our way back, we crossed a few school kids who belonged to Thunja village. They said that Thunja has around 20 homes but does not have a homestay yet. I’m sure it is a pristine village and wish to go there soon!!

Grahan

The route chosen for the downhill descent was the way through Pulgi village. It was a beautiful walk along the river, fields of wildflowers and multiple shades of green. Life felt good in this tiny hamlet of Grahan away from the touristy crowds of Kasol and the heart wanted to stay there. But the mind has its ways. We reached Kasol after about 2.5 hours of walking through the forest. This path joins the main trekking trail at the 1.5 km mark to Grahan.

Grahan

Grahan is first campsite for the Sar Pass trek in Parvati Valley. The YHAI groups have a different area for camping in New Grahan. Grahan village is well equipped in terms of homestays for a comfortable stay. And due to the fact that phones don’t work in Grahan makes this tiny hidden village hidden feel even more interesting.

Grahan

A Brief Trekking Guide from Kasol to Grahan

The beginning of the trek to Grahan from Kasol is really easy. Huge path next to Grahan Nallah as it flows on the left side. There’s a camping site too in the forest on the right side. The gurgling sound of the flowing water accompanies one till about 2-3 kms of the hike and thereafter the way snakes up deep into the valley.

Do not take the first bridge to the left on which ‘Way to Thunja and shortcut to Grahan is written’. Continue straight and remember to not take the pretty wooden bridge to Grahan either. This trail is in fact a road in construction halfway till Grahan and one has to continue to the end of the road where you can spot a river crossing on logs of wood where the path continues to your right after the crossing.

Grahan

As you continue, there will be regular signboards indicating the way to Grahan. Around 30-45 mins after the river crossing, you will come across the first dhaba / café on the trail. This is the one permanent dhaba on the trekking trail from Kasol to Grahan and they were also constructing rooms for stays. This can roughly be said to be the halfway point for the trek to Grahan.

There are 2-3 more makeshift dhabas on the way, where one can break for lunch and tea and ask for directions. After 30 odd minutes of walking, one comes across a 1.5 km mark for Grahan. Remember to take the left trail at this point; its shorter and will leave you directly in Grahan. Also remember that on the entire trek from Kasol to Grahan, there are markers, pointers and signboards every 15 minutes. The trekking trail is pretty well defined and if you don’t see directions for thirty minutes, it probably means you are lost. During the summer months, Grahan sees a steady stream of visitors and that means there is little chance of losing the trail.

Grahan

Basic tips for trekking to Grahan Village :

Do not litter. Remember we are here for the clean nature. Respect the local traditions as written on the signboard and not carry alcohol as Grahan is alcohol free.

Depending on the average fitness of a person, the trek from Kasol to Grahan can take anywhere from 3 to 5 hours. It is recommended that you start early in the morning so as to make it to Grahan in broad daylight. Remember it is not a nice feeling to get lost in the jungle, particularly when its cold an you are alone.

There are many homestays in Grahan. No need to book beforehand. Rooms are basic and are available for 300 Rupees. Bathrooms are mostly shared and are located close to the main homestay structure. The new homestays are said to be built with attached bathrooms. Food can be expensive in Grahan; but rajma chawal cooked by the family is the best. Ask for the same thali that they themselves eat and it will be charged far lesser.

The weather in Grahan can get cold even during the summers and temperatures can drop to 0-5 degrees. Keep your winter clothes handy.

With my stance on responsible travel , I was wondering if I should really make this blog post or not. And then I decided to go ahead : Grahan village has existed forever, yes – it involves a moderate trek and that will ensure that the crowds will stay away. A road is being built halfway till Grahan. Will it result in another Tosh like situation?

I would love your thoughts on how magical villages like Grahan can be preserved forever?

Grahan Village: Finding Paradise in Parvati Valley

Everything you need to know about the Grahan Village Trek, a peaceful village hidden way up in the hills of India’s Parvati Valley. Includes directions, what to bring, where to stay and more!

Endless blankets of towering deodar trees. Golden sunshine flickering off a crystal-clear river. Ferocious (and trickling) waterfalls of all shapes and sizes crashing out of craggy rock formations. Lush, green, vegetation sprouting alongside a dirt path, free of any and all motorized vehicles.

lush green forest views of grahan village

Welcome to the Grahan Village Trek, which very well might be one of the most beautiful places in all of Parvati Valley . It’s also one of the easiest treks in Himachal! The peaceful, long ascent into the forest is more than just an endeavor- the destination is just as delicious as the journey: Grahan Village.

A complete guide to India's Grahan Village trek. Includes information (and photos) on how to reach the hippie hamlet of Grahan Village in Parvati Valley, India. #Indiatravel #backpackingIndia #Indiatrekking #treksinIndia #parvativalley #himachalpradesh

Grahan Village sits tucked away in the hills of Parvati in Northern India , and is home to a type of life long gone to most. Not a drop of cell service reaches the small hamlet, and not a single car or motorbike trundles along its paths.

Far away from the shrill horns and dizzying congestion down below, many say that Grahan is what Kasol was before mass tourism came into town. And boy is it refreshing!

Looking to embark on this fairytale forest journey yourself? Read on for everything you need to know about the Grahan Trek and Grahan Village itself!

But first… where and what is the Grahan Village Trek?

Don’t worry- this isn’t an expert undertaking! The Grahan Trek is a lengthy but relatively easy trek from Kasol, a place you’re sure to get familiar with during your stay in Parvati Valley. Grahan is a small, remote village some 5-6 hours from Kasol, and the Grahan trek height is about 2300 m (or 7,700 feet).

The people of Grahan Village are the only other group that the mystical Malanese consider to be equals. In fact, legend has it that Grahan used to be situated close to Malana (which is about an hour away from Kasol) until it was moved about 500 years ago.

crops and houses of grahan village

Those living in Grahan are farmers, and their main crops are potatoes, apples, and this being Parvati Valley… charas ( hashish) .  Though the smoky stuff is widely accepted and thus available, alcohol is STRICTLY prohibited in Grahan, as is entering the temple in the center of the village.

This hamlet of the hills is only accessible via foot- and that’s where the Grahan Trek comes in! Unlike other treks in the Himalayas , the way to Grahan isn’t particularly steep or difficult… quite the opposite of the Rashol trek which literally had me stopping every few minutes.

dirt path in the forest that leads to grahan

And unlike the more popular journey to Kheerganga, the path to Grahan was anything but crowded… in early July, we only ran into a small handful of other trekkers!

horse and trekker on the trail

Though the average Kasol to Grahan Trek time is about 5 hours, don’t be surprised if you find yourself stopping every few minutes for photos, waterfalls, or just to admire the scenery. Seriously- this route is straight outta’ a fairytale.

The Kasol to Grahan trek distance is about 8km, and it ends up forking towards the end with one option being shorter (albeit significantly steeper) than the other. Nevertheless, you should be all good to go even if you leave at 11 AM.

Keep in mind that Grahan Village doesn’t have cell phone service, but does have multiple guesthouses so bringing a tent isn’t a requirement. As the village is super popular with Israeli tourists, a lowkey restaurant serving Israeli delicacies can be found in the center of the village (and most guesthouses will serve food, too.)

When to do the Grahan Village Trek

Grahan, like all of Parvati Valley, has four seasons and becomes cold and frozen AF in winters. Though it might be possible, the trek would be much more difficult and far less enjoyable if done between December-March.

The best time (think plenty of sunshine and no humidity) to head to Grahan is between the months of May-June (or even April), though that also coincides with peak tourist season.

light green waterfall flowing through a forest

I embarked on the trek in early July, and was lucky to avoid rain, though July and August are typically the monsoon months in and around the valley. The temperature in Grahan Village fluctuates, but definitely bring a sweatshirt for the nights no matter which month you come in!

You can also enjoy excellent weather and fewer tourists come September-October. The weather might be a bit cooler, but the rains will be gone and so will most of the tourists!

How to get to Kasol

Before you start trekkin’ you’re first going to need to reach Kasol in Himachal Pradesh. Kasol is the main town in Parvati Valley and can only be reached by bus, taxi, or your own vehicle if you have one.

Overnight buses from New Delhi to Kasol leave daily. Keep in mind that most of these drop off passengers in Bhuntar, which is about 1 hour from Kasol. From there, you can either hop on a local bus or get a taxi into town- the latter of which ain’t budget-friendly (the flat rate is about 1200 rupees).

Though Chojh village is the best place to stay near Kasol, it’s pretty far from the start of the Grahan Trek. If you want to be close to everything in central Kasol, it’s best to stay in a hostel or guesthouse in town.

How to reach Grahan Village

rock that says way to grahan with an arrow

Now for the fun part… the actual trek! The way to Grahan Village from Kasol starts on the accurately named Grahan Road, which can be easily found on Google Maps, though I recommend downloading maps.me too! Luckily, the entire trail is clearly marked and straightforward so there aren’t many concerns about getting lost.

Tree branch bridge on the way to grahan village

On the way in, you’ll pass a few cafes before finding yourself on a dirt road with the crystal clear Grahan Nallah flowing to the left.

The beginning of the trek is easy, with no elevation to speak of. If it’s hot out, there are numerous pools of water along the river that are ideal for a swim.

What IS important to remember at the beginning of the trek is NOT to cross the wooden bridge that will eventually appear on your left. Yes, it looks quaint and inviting but it will take you up an extremely steep and difficult way.

Continue on until the dirt path ends and you see a FAT wooden log across the river. This IS the correct way to Grahan Village!

girl filling up water bottle from grahan nallah

By now the Grahan Nallah will no longer be to your left and the route will become more “forest-y.” There are numerous small waterfalls and streams to fill up your water bottle with- no lie this is some of the best water I’ve ever tasted!

white sign with red writing on the way to grahan

Once you reach a makeshift dhaba, you can rest assured that you’re (kinda) almost there! Massive pine trees, a cacophony of bird calls, insect hums and a bit of a steeper climb now await.

signs pointing to two different ways to grahan village

And soon you’ll have a choice to make. The easy way to Grahan Village or the hard way? A helpful sign will point out the deviation for you, but keep in mind that though the hard way is significantly shorter, it’s also DAMN STEEP and is primarily used by villagers and their cattle.

The easy way takes longer but offers a more relaxing and scenic route that enters Grahan through the side of Pulgi Village. Your choice.

You’ll see the Grahan houses a’ ways before you actually reach the village. The end of the trek steepens up a bit (from experience on the easy route), but once you spot the village know that it isn’t much farther until you’re in it.

Where to Stay in Grahan Village

Now that you’ve made it to Grahan Village, it’s time to find a place to stay. There’s a few guesthouses/ homestays in the village, and all offer basic yet comfy rooms.

blue heaven homestay sign

I would highly recommend staying at Blue Heaven Homestay , a relatively new guesthouse. It has some incredible sunset views of the village, and is the first guesthouse you’ll encounter after the trek! (…assuming you came up the easy way.)

A private room with a shared, outdoor bathroom goes for 300 rupees a night. The husband and wife pair that owns Blue Heaven are both from Grahan Village and made some delicious food. If Blue Heaven is full, Mountain View is another popular homestay in Grahan with superb alpine vistas!

Various other food options can be found in the village, though expect things to be a bit pricier considering every single thing here has to be hauled up the mountain from Kasol.

What to Do in Grahan Village

Like many places in Parvati Valley, the destination at the end of the Grahan Trek is a place to while away some time in a place completely disconnected from noise and distractions.

mother and son sitting in chair

Take a walk through the village- there are multiple paths and trails that go all around Grahan and to the nearby village of Pulgi. Definitely admire the temple in the center of Grahan- though non-villagers aren’t allowed inside, its exterior is godly.

grahan village wooden temple

Try to interact with locals, and always ASK before taking photos of them. Another unique feature of Grahan that you should definitely try if possible is honey. Yes, honey!

The villagers of Grahan are known to collect honey from the forest, and it isn’t your typical variety. The honey of Grahan Village actually gives a sugar rush it’s so potent!

Things to Bring on the Grahan  Trek

  • Though the Grahan Village trek isn’t the most difficult journey you can embark on, you should still bring some handy hiking gadgets and other essentials along for the trip. I highly recommend bringing:
  • Cash- there’s no ATM’s here!
  • A good day-pack
  • Trekking poles
  • Bug-spray/ cream
  • A sweatshirt- nights can get chilly
  • Snacks for the trek
  • Water bottle to fill up

There's many treks in India, including the hike from Kasol to Grahan Village in Parvati Valley, India. Click through for everything you need to know about trekking to Grahan Village in Himachal Pradesh. #BackpackingIndia #Indiatraveltips #IndiaTreks #trekkinginIndia

And there we have it y’all, everything you need to know to know about the Grahan Village Trek! Grahan is one of the last “hidden” places in Parvati Valley, and one of the few places that hasn’t been too changed by commercialization.

Don’t litter, don’t blast loud music, and definitely do not bring any alcohol. Grahan Village is a gift- let’s keep it that way!

“ After 3 trips with JustWravel, I can guarantee that the quality of services and competences of the staff during their trips is incredible. If you are looking for great adventures in Himachal Pradesh with a group of amazing like-minded travelers, JustWravel is your best option. Accommodation (dom tents, swiss tents, hostels or homestay) is always well organised and the staff makes sure you are comfortable in all situations. Be prepared for amazing landscapes when waking up in your dom tents (during the Kareri trek), delicious breakfast prepared by your hosts in Home stays (Grahan Villlage trip), or thrilling activities such as Paragliding (Bir Billing trip). I especially loved the moments around the bone fires singing, playing and discussing life with other travelers. My trek leader Rahbar was so talented in making every one included in the group and creating a group cohesion. He insured safety first at all times, while making this trip memorable for all of us! I fully recommend JustWravel for travelers of all ages, all nationalities, all background, may you be a solo traveler, in a couple, or with a group of friends. It's just an incredible experience! ”

Would love to be a part of future trips with JW. Suggestions: 1. Tent conditions can be improved 2. Longewala can be skipped and instead Kuldhara fort can be added. 3. Bus stops can be decided in advance. ”

A specific shout out to our trip captain Divya ( She is a delight) and Lakshay for making the trip interesting and fun. It was my first solo trip and I am happy I chose Just Wravel and will cherish the memories made. Areas of improvement- Itinerary could been planned better. “ I recently did a trip to Leh Ladakh with JustWravel team, and boy, was it an experience for a lifetime! The trip leaders - Geetanjali, Ashish, Shashank - took such good care of the travellers. The team's thoughtfulness and local experience really shone through in the way the itinerary was planned. Plenty of photo opportunities, and daily briefings to prepare us for the unfamiliar climate and terrains of Ladakh. We had sufficient time for rest & recuperation and the accommodations provided were the best-possible, given the environmental conditions in that particular region. Really glad I did this trip solo and chose to go ahead with JustWravel's expertise. All we had to do was show up and the team ensured that we would have a great time - exploring the destinations and clicking away pictures of the beautiful mountains, valleys & lakes. Special shoutout to Geetanjali who really helped keep the spirits high and thanks to her, a group of strangers just felt like long-lost friends. Truly a memorable trip! ”

“ Just when I wanted a break, not actually a break rather an experience, JustWravel popped up in my Google Search, that too with options like backpacking grps, all girls with pick up and drop location at Delhi, so I booked the All Girls Spiti Valley Trip (01/07/2023) with JustWravel. Our entire trip went very smooth until the last day in Manali (09/07/2023) when Himachal was hit by the Natural Calamity. By God's grace our entire group was very much safe in Manali. The agency handled our extended stays (3days) in Manali hotel, including meals, travel and everything. Our trip leader Mehek Mahajan kept us always updated and was always there to support us in every way plausible. She even suggested to book tickets from Chandigarh as Delhi was flooded too, most of us did that and reached home safely. Inspite all these, the journey to Spiti Valley was indelible. And one thing is for sure, next time if I get to travel I'll again choose JustWravel. ”

We spend most of our time looking at high skylines and concrete roads. Most of us find it hard to envision a place that remains untouched by the industrialization that many cities have accepted as a part of their ever-developing culture.

But there is a whole world out there and it’s this awareness that keeps us wanting to explore places that are different and unique. All we want is to escape to a place that gives us peace and sets our minds at ease even if it’s in the form of a 3-day weekend trip to Grahan.

If we were to compare Himachal Pradesh with a treasure trove, then Grahan would be the rare, precious gem that remains obscured from the eyes of many travelers today.

At a distance of a 5 Kilometers hike from one of the most popular places in Himachal, Kasol, this spiritual village makes you feel as if time has slowed down to let you know that it’s time to take a breather and look around for a while.

If you have been looking for a place where life moves at a slow pace, a place without the bustling city noise, a place where peace still exists, then a trek to Grahan is something that you must do in Himachal.

Located at an altitude of 7,700 feet, this tiny hamlet is nestled in Parvati Valley and although you have to strain your legs a bit to reach here, the experience is extremely rewarding. On this weekend's getaway to Grahan, we take you to Kasol at first as there is no direct way to reach this village.

Since Kasol is one of the must-visit places in Himachal , we make sure that you get to take a glimpse at the local lifestyle and spend a night in Kasol.

We head out for the Grahan Trek afterward. After traversing through lush green forests consisting of deodar trees, crossing rickety wooden bridges, passing by the streaming rivers and cascading waterfalls, and walking upon a trail covered with rugged stones, the remote village of Grahan will come into view.

A life that is long lost due to urbanization, this trek to Grahan, feels like going back in time as there are no vehicles, internet connections, or ATMs.

If you’re thinking that a place so untouched by the outside world will not have much to offer, then we are here to tell you that there are many things to do in Grahan and there are places that you can’t miss. The Grahan waterfalls, The Grahan Nalla river are only a few beautiful spots that you must visit in Grahan.

The Grahan trek is actually one of the best treks in Himachal. One of the things that add more charm is the furry companions you will find on the trail. There are dogs who would trek along with you till you reach the village.

If you are in Grahan, then you simply can’t miss the magic honey that is a significant part of the cuisine. It is bound to give you a sugar rush but that's just one of the experiences that you must have while you're here.

The homestays which will be your accommodations are basically wooden houses that are crafted beautifully with cozy rooms that are bound to make you fall in love and come back to this place again.
