In its unending journey of updating and enhancing itself with the latest trends, Kumbalangi Model Tourism Village joined the League of Responsible Tourism Movement. As part of the effort, the first seminar on Responsible Tourism was held at the Panchayat Hall on October 31, 2012. It was conducted by the Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies (KITTS), Village Panchayat, and the Kumbalangi Model Tourism Development Society (KMTDS). The Kumbalangi Panchayat was selected along with other tourism destinations like Kovalam, Kumarakom, Vythiri, Bekal, Thekkady, and Ambalavayal to implement the Responsible Tourism initiative. Kumbalangi also has the distinction of being the first-ever model tourism village in the country and was later associated with neighboring panchayats of Kumbalam and Chellanam to take up sustainable agri-tourism village projects. According to this initiative, Kumarakom has successfully attempted to create Responsible Tourism groups and started engaging them in organic farming and poultry. The products obtained from such groups were supplied to tourist projects like hotels and resorts in the village. “We are working on a similar model where residents of Kumbalangi can be encouraged to form groups and engage in organic farming. However, the village does not have enough tourism market, unlike Kumarakom. So we are thinking along the lines of entering into agreements with hotels and homestays in Fort Kochi and Mattanchery tourism belt,” said M P Sivadathan, President, KMTDS.homestays

Marked by narrow alleys and timeworn houses, Fort Kochi is the pride of Kerala. Tourists who venture into Fort Kochi are greeted by the remnants of British, Portuguese and Dutch eras. The fort built by the Portuguese rulers from which the place got its name has long been destroyed, but the name carries on. St. Francis church in Fort Kochi is one of the earliest European churches in India. Greatly revered by Christians, this church is also the final resting place of Vasco Da Gama, the Portuguese explorer who set foot in India centuries back. There is so much of history in the story of Fort Kochi!

Mattancherry, far from madding crowd

How to reach Kumbalangi

Kumbalangi, being a stone’s throw away from Kochi, the commercial capital of Kerala, is blessed by good connectivity.

By air: Cochin International Airport is 45 kms away from Kumbalangi. As Kochi is well connected by air to all major cities in India and abroad, this would be the best way to travel.

By train: Ernakulam junction, the nearest railway station, is just 12 kms from Kumbalangi. Trains are best for those wishing to capture a slice of common man’s life.

By road: From Kochi, hop on to any bus leading to Kumbalangi and you are there in 15 minutes.

About Cochin- The Commercial Capital of Kerala

About kumbalangi – the model tourist village, the destination, near by attractions.

It is also known as Dutch Palace, built by the Portuguese and presented to the Raja of Kochi in 1555 A.D.It acquired the present name after 1663 when the Dutch carried out extensions and repairs in the palace.

Situated In MATTANCHERRY the Synagogue was built in 1568 AD. The Great Scrolls of the Old Testament, the copper plates in which the grants of privilege made by the Kochi rulers were recorded and the exquisite Chinese hand-painted tiles are of interest.

Located at Fort Kochi this Protestant church was originally built by the Portuguese in 1510 AD and is believed to be the oldest church built by the Europeans in India. lt is here the remains of the inveterate traveler, Vasco da Gama were initially buried and 14 years later, his mortal remains were taken to Portugal.
