such a shame you didn't research first - there are 1,000s of posts on this board alone about them. Make sure you tell your friends as many people don't see the warnings on here.

option travel

HUNDREDS of threads here and THOUSANDS of posts warning not to use them. Your “clever” title isn’t going to stop anyone from using them, in fact making it a question might leave someone wondering.

FWIW, I booked direct with UA on my last trip to Hawaii and they cancelled our reservation, did not inform us and it resulted in a very uncomfortable night at HNL airport. And I booked my own unconnected flights , all separately on the airlines own website. What did that achieve? Nothing, except I had the foresight to not book the cheapest and most restrictive fare so I could easily change the subsequent flights .

As usual Kiwi get the blame, why not, they are the middle man so whether they did anything wrong or not, they are the scapegoat.

"Then when you call and demand a refund they will say things like “we will try and attempt to request as much money as possible be refunded to you” even though their kiwi guarantee clearly states that they will “refund the full amount of the original air fare ”." Where do they promise that? Read this again.

https://www.kiwi.com/en/help/kiwi-com-guarantee-260/article/how-exactly-does-the-kiwi-com-guarantee-work-439/

Where does it say they will refund the entire trip cost when only part of the schedule has changed? Sounds to me like they are trying to get a refund on the rest of the booking which was not affected by schedule changes.

If you don't understand how travel agents inc OTAs work, don't use them and complain later.

Travel Light With the 15 Best Sleek and Stylish Crossbody Purses, Sling Bags, and More — From $14

Handpicked by someone who hates traveling with a big bag.

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

No matter the destination, traveling can be an amazing experience, and having the right purse can make your life on the road smoother. But what if you’re someone who doesn’t love carrying a big bag as you stroll through a farmer’s market in Seattle or hike Rocky Mountain National Park?

Don’t worry, we’ve got plenty of suggestions for you. These days, large purses are far from a necessity. We found 15 travel purses and bags that will hold everything you need without weighing you down — and they’ll fit right into an overhead bin or under the seat if you’re flying. That's not even the best part: These top-rated styles, ranging from sleek sling bags and belt bags to RFID-blocking crossbody purses and backpacks , start at just $14.

Kedzie Quilted Puffer Crossbody Bag

This convertible sling bag from Kedzie has become my go-to travel purse. The zippered front pocket is perfect for lip gloss and receipts while the larger two zippered pockets hold lotion, wallet, phone, gum, and more. You can wear this like a crossbody or over your shoulder, plus, a second strap is included if you want to wear it like a backpack.

Reviewers have said they want to buy multiples after trying the bag. They have also called it the “perfect size” that " holds everything I need and more ."

Everlane The Recycled Nylon Camera Bag

Yes, this is a camera bag, and you can absolutely carry a camera in it. But it’s good for so much more than that with its adjustable crossbody style strap, two zippered compartments, and an exterior slip pocket. The main body is made with 100 percent recycled nylon while the lining is 100 percent recycled polyester. Tasteful neutrals like black, khaki, and beige will go with anything — saving you precious luggage space.

“It's a great size with enough room for the essentials; it holds my wallet (not a small one), keys, phone, glasses, lipstick,” raved one reviewer. “I love it so much I bought it in two colors.”

Everlane The Cactus Leather Sling Bag

Sling bags are in, and this option brings sophisticated vibes for a girls’ weekend in wine country. Made with organically sourced prickly pear cactus (who knew?), the brand's Desserto material is a fabulous leather alternative. No digging in the bottomless abyss of a giant purse here — it’s got just enough room for just the basics, like a card or two, lip balm, and your phone. Choose from sleek cashew, dark honey, or day-brightening lime green.

“I am also a bare necessity type of girl, so I love the fact that it really only fits my small wallet, phone, and chapstick," one shopper was happy to report. "It will be wonderful for travel as well with a passport."

Patagonia Atom Sling Bag

If you’ve got active travel plans like exploring the Grand Canyon, you’ll want to grab this sling bag from Patagonia. The four color options include two solid hues and two vibrantly color-blocked options, all of which are water-repellant, made with recycled materials, and Fair Trade Certified sewn. Weighing just 12 ounces, it has an impressive capacity of 488 cubic inches with a phone pocket and two main compartments. You can even use it to bring your yoga mat along by using the tuckaway front straps. Now those are Namaste vibes!

According to one reviewer, who hiked not one but two challenges (100 miles in 100 days each), said, “I can always fit more than I think in the outermost compartment. The mesh pocket holds {my} phone perfectly, and it's easy to access everything even when the bag is on.”

Osprey Daylite Pack

Want something slightly larger than a sling bag? This backpack weighs just over 1 pound and can fit a 13-inch laptop in its roomy, three-compartment interior. Its compact size makes it an ideal personal item if you’re flying to your next workcation since it’ll fit right under the airplane seat. You’ll stay hydrated with two side pockets for water bottles and you can keep your keys close by with the attached key clip. Plus, the four solid jewel-tone hues lend just the right amount of understated style.

From hikes to flights, reviewers love this bag for any adventure. One chimed in, “This was perfect for my flight excursion. It's just the right size and shape, [and is] lightweight and comfortable.”

Fjallraven High Coast Crossbody Bag

This crossbody may look like your average purse, but it has a detachable strap that turns the bag into a sleek pouch when you're on the go. It has two main compartments, a key hook, and two interior mesh sleeves to keep everything in its place, whether used as a cosmetics pouch in your checked bag or as a purse while dashing to your airport gate. It's available in olive green and black hues, and both styles are just $50.

Though it's perfect for travel, reviewers love that it makes for a great everyday bag. One REI customer said, “This bag does the tricks great for travel, hiking, [and] dinner out with friends. It holds way more than you think, and the outside pocket is a nice added bonus."

Baggallini Crossbody Bag With RFID-blocking Wristlet

Known for functionality and plenty of pockets, Baggallini crossbody bags live up to the brand’s reputation. Five colors are available, including black and a fun lipstick red. The bag has RFID-blocking protection in the included wristlet for peace of mind while jet-setting, plus three exterior zip pockets. It’ll stow nicely under an airplane seat and you can even machine wash the bag. Bonus: It’s on sale starting at $49 — the lowest price we’ve seen in a month.

“The size is perfect [and has] enough space to fit everything: keys, glasses (two pairs), a wallet, a phone, [and more] odds and ends," a reviewer described. "[There are] zippers to keep everything in securely and just enough compartments to organize."

Arc’teryx Mantis 1 Waist Pack

Into hands-free travel bags? Arc’teryx’s waist pack has a rugged appeal and can be worn around the waist or over your shoulder. At 15 inches wide, the two zippered compartments hold a respectable amount of goods, including your keys with its interior key clip. The Yukon hue is a medium tan and the bag is made from recycled poly material for a durable yet environmentally friendly option that’s less than $50.

Taking to the review section, a traveler explained how useful it is as both a travel and an everyday bag, saying, “While traveling, it was great that it could hold larger portable batteries for phones, wallets, snack bars, keys, coins, etc. The zippers are very robust and zip very smoothly.”

Frye Melissa Zip Crossbody

Frye is known for quality leather bags, but with this on-sale option, the brand is bringing in a little shimmer for those who can’t say no to a bit of glam. The three hues include denim blue, oatmeal beige, and dusty rose to match your favorite travel outfits. It has a zippered main compartment with an interior pocket, as well as an outer slip pocket and an adjustable strap.

Reviewers adore this bag and rave that it’s “roomy” yet lightweight. Another happy shopper said even when the bag is full, it still has a slim profile.

Dagne Dover Mara Phone Sling Crossbody Bag

If you’re gifted with the elusive (for me, anyway) skill of packing light, you’ll want to grab this Dagne Dover phone sling bag. It has a crossbody strap that can go from 14.5 to 28 inches, and the bag itself measures just 6.5 inches wide — just enough room for your phone, a lip balm, and a credit card or a bit of cash. You have four colors to choose from, like classic black or a deep moss green.

“I take this literally everywhere with me and have two young kids. It's much easier to fish things out [of] this than any giant bag of kid stuff,” said one clever reviewer. “And it’s trendy and cute when I’m without kiddos.”

Hobo Draft Leather Crossbody Bag

This bag will be your new best friend if you appreciate versatility and a timeless style. Available in all neutral colors (black, white, or tan), it has an adjustable strap that you can remove to transform the bag into a clutch for a night out. The foldover flap gives it extra style while upping its content's protection, and the luxe leather material elevates it into a chic everyday bag.

Reviewers say the bag is soft and holds plenty of items without bulging. One shopper noted it was “perfect” for carrying a wallet and passport during their international travels.

Madewell The Essential Mini Bucket Tote

It’s possible to get the style of a bucket bag without the bulk thanks to Madewell. Measuring just 8.5 inches tall, this bag can be worn as a crossbody or shoulder bag. Plus, it’s structured like a classic bucket bag and has a flat base to keep it upright for easy packing and tracking down what you need inside. The elegant leather bag also comes in a warm brown or a beige hue for a timeless look.

Multiple reviewers have called it a “great bag,” with some calling it the “perfect size.” And it currently has a perfect five-star rating from all reviewers at Nordstrom.

Travelon Women’s Messenger Bag

Have travel plans to busy destinations? Check out Travelon’s anti-theft messenger bag for peace of mind, especially while weaving through crowded stadiums or venues. Its five-point anti-theft features (like a slash-resistant material) make it a smart choice while the front magnetic flap adds style and an obstacle for thieves and pickpockets. Keep your water bottle handy in the side pocket and stash your passport and other important documents in one of many zippered or slip pockets. The classic black version is $80, but select colors (like olive green) are on sale for as little as $51.

It’s easy to see why over 6,200 people have given it a perfect five-star rating. One traveler , who bought multiples, said, “It has excellent security features. All [the] zippers have clasps that secure them. There is a front pocket that works great for cell phone, on the opposite side, one outside pocket that works great for credit cards, passport, etc., and has RFID protection.”

Bostanten Small Phone Crossbody Bag

Available in an impressive 15 colors and patterns, this vegan leather cell phone bag can hold four cards plus a phone, along with some small essentials in the zippered pockets. The crossbody strap is adjustable, but you can remove it and slip this small bag into a larger one if you need more supplies for all-day sightseeing excursions.

“I purchased this for a Caribbean cruise vacation; I fit three passports, credit cards, a driver's license, a hotel keycard, car keys, and a ship sea pass, and still had room for lipstick, a folded excursion map, receipts, and other essentials,” one cruise goer shared . “I’m glad I bought it.”

Maxtop Fanny Pack

Last but not least, this fanny pack is another perfect travel companion if you don’t want to carry around a huge bag. It’s just $14 (but currently on sale for $9) and comes in four colors (black, two gray hues, and pink). Within the zippered main compartment, there’s a hidden pocket to store your cash or passport. Wear it as a classic fanny pack (the ‘90s are back, after all!) or as a sling.

“I bought this cross-shoulder bag for vacation and wanted a nice looking, comfortable cross-shoulder bag that carried just what I needed — that’s what I got,” exclaimed one shopper . Another traveler added , “It feels good worn in the traditional sense, but I do prefer the strap across the shoulders.”

Artificially Intelligent Help for Planning Your Summer Vacation

Travel-focused A.I. bots and more eco-friendly transportation options in online maps and search tools can help you quickly organize your seasonal getaway.

  • Share full article

The home page for the Layla travel-planning site, which shows a photo of a woman next to the word “LAYLA” in big type, above a search box showing the query “I need a beach vacation without sharks or tourists.”

By J. D. Biersdorfer

J.D. Biersdorfer has been using smartphone apps for travel since the summer of 2007.

The summer travel season starts in just a few weeks, but if you are looking for software that goes beyond simply booking flights and hotels, you’re in luck. Search engines enhanced by artificial intelligence can help with your research and outline full itineraries. Certain older apps have recently been updated to suggest more eco-friendly travel options. And keeping it all organized on your phone is easier than ever. Here’s an overview.

Using an A.I. Travel Agent

General-purpose A.I.-powered search tools and chatbots like Google’s Gemini spin up a list of things to do on your vacation when asked, but A.I. bots that are fine-tuned for travel queries are often more comprehensive. These bots scout destinations, plan itineraries, search for accommodations and flights, map out road trips and do more — grabbing a lot of information at once and saving you all that time-consuming web trawling.

Give the software your specifics — like destination, length of stay, interests — and see what it suggests. Many A.I. helpers are free to use if you sign up for an account, but some charge a subscription fee for premium services; your app store has specifics.

Layla , formerly Roam Around, is one of the free vacation-oriented A.I. helpers you can find online, and it has teamed up with travel sites that include Skyscanner , Get Your Guide and Booking.com . If you prefer land-based car and camper journeys, Roadtrippers (free trial; $60 year) includes real-time traffic and air-quality information along with route planning. And old stalwarts like Tripadvisor and Expedia are now using A.I.-generated vacation builders.

But as others have also noted, while A.I. travel planners have much potential, many are still works in progress and usually display disclaimers admitting so.

A.I. bots have been known to offer generic advice like “enjoy lunch at a local restaurant,” suggest activities that are out of season or too far apart, repeatedly recommend the same restaurant, consistently steer you to their advertisers or point you to locations that have closed. If you ask different bots the same question, you may get nearly identical suggestions, all scraped from the same tourism websites.

Still, A.I. travel apps are improving as they learn, and can be useful for the trip research and coordination phase. Just be sure to double-check the bot’s work before you commit to a plan.

Finding Earth-Friendly Options

There’s no shortage of apps for booking transportation to your destination. But if you want to keep the environment in mind, recent updates to Google’s Maps and Search apps now suggest routes and methods that lower your personal impact on the planet.

Google for the past few years has been pointing people to flights with lower carbon emissions , alternative train routes , fuel-efficient driving directions and eco-friendly hotels . It is now expanding its walking, biking and public transit suggestions alongside car routes in several major cities and adding more electric-vehicle charging information. Google Flights shows jet emissions estimates . Google Search has a “consider taking the train” nudge with rail routes and prices under certain flight results.

Apple’s Maps app also shows mass transit , walking and cycling options for getting around town, along with charge-friendly routes for electric vehicles . However, the default apps on your phone are not the only aids. Third-party software for directions and sustainable travel abound.

For example, Citymapper, which covers most major cities in the United States, Europe and Asia, includes environmental impact statistics on some trips. Its directions often include accessibility options that avoid stairways , along with routes for the fastest, cheapest or easiest way to get where you’re going; Citymapper is free with in-app purchases.

Other apps available for those seeking environmentally minded vacations include Bikemap for community-sourced cycling routes around the world, HappyCow for vegan and vegetarian travelers and Tap Hydration and Water Stations to locate sources for refilling reusable water bottles.

Keeping Organized

If you don’t already have software for consolidating your trip information, your phone’s default apps can help. Electronic boarding passes, hotel reservations and advance tickets can be quickly added to the digital wallet on your phone; a pragmatic paper backup tucked in your bag is insurance. Google and Apple offer to automatically add reservations and events from email and messages to your calendar .

Free services like TripIt (and its phone apps ), TripCase (also with Android or iOS apps) and Wanderlog automatically put all your travel information in one place, typically by scanning the information in your confirmation emails. TripIt Pro , a $50-a-year subscription version, adds more features like seat, fare and airline-points trackers, as well as international travel tools and regional risk alerts like those for extreme weather that can affect airline schedules and public safety .

A.I. bots and travel apps will continue to evolve and, hopefully, make vacation planning even easier in the future. Just don’t forget to occasionally put the phone down and enjoy your time off once you get there.

Alaska is the first U.S. airline to link guest participation in sustainability to loyalty with an accelerated path to elite status.

We’re excited to share a new way you can join us on our journey toward a more sustainable aviation future.

Now, when you book your flights with Alaska Airlines, guests will have the option to reduce their environmental impacts by purchasing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) credits right in the booking path. You can choose to support SAF in an amount based on 5%, 10%, or 20% of your emissions when you book on alaskaair.com (mobile app feature coming soon!).

Plus, Alaska Mileage Plan™ members who buy SAF credits can earn elite-qualifying miles (EQMs) for their contributions! For every $100 spent on SAF, you’ll score 500 EQMs (up to 5,000 EQMs per year), giving you a boost on your journey to elite status.

SAF is a critical part of aviation’s path to a more sustainable future, and while we use it today, there is not enough SAF available. It will take all of us to grow this market,” said Diana Birkett Rakow, senior vice president of public affairs and sustainability, Alaska Airlines. “The more people who know about and support this important technology, the better we can impact efforts to make a sustainable future for air travel a reality.”

option travel

Now, when you’re booking your trip, you’ll see SAF credit options in the booking process as part of the other options, powered by climate technology company, CHOOOSE. The SAF credit option is based on carbon emissions associated with the guest’s flight and follow the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Recommended Practice 1726 (Passenger CO2 Calculation Method) . This calculation method leverage parameters including  aircraft fuel consumption, flight path, seat configuration, cabin class, and load factors sourced directly from Alaska’s operational data.

How it works:

“Alaska is on a journey to make air travel more sustainable with an ambitious goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2040. Now we are inviting our guests to join us on the journey,” said Rakow. “We’re proud to be the first U.S. airline to make this connection between guest engagement in SAF and earning elite status.”

Want to support SAF and cover even more of your trip? Visit alaskaair.chooose.today to do so!

Navigating sustainability in aviation

Join Base Chief Pilot JP Wilson for a journey through Alaska Airlines’ path to net zero carbon emissions by 2040. We reflect on the impact of aviation on our planet and explore sustainable solutions for the future of air travel.

Our EverGreen Journey

We have prioritized immediate actions and long-term investments –being the first airline to remove plastic straws, water bottles and cups on board – aimed to reduce our carbon emissions and waste, and to protect local ecosystems. We know we can’t make this journey alone and are working closely with innovative partners across the globe to inform our sustainability work and enable new solutions for the future.

SAF is a safe and certified fuel that, according to IATA , can slash carbon emissions by a whopping 80% or more over its lifecycle. And the best part? It can be used in all the aircraft and fuel systems we already have. Since 2010, Alaska has worked with a coalition of partners to drive the growth of the SAF market.

These efforts include programs with Microsoft and other companies to offset employee business travel. We’ve also been working with universities and scientists to stay up to date on all the latest research and knowledge when it comes to SAF. Plus, advocated for public policy to help advance SAF.

JetBlue adds new flights, deluxe seats from Phoenix. Here's where you can fly

option travel

Some transcontinental flights from Phoenix are about to get more comfortable.

JetBlue Airways announced Wednesday that Mint, its premium seating option, will be offered in Phoenix for the first time.

It comes as JetBlue is expanding its seasonal service out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, increasing the frequency of flights to New York City and Boston and reintroducing a route to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

JetBlue Mint boasts an assortment of luxury amenities aimed at making flights more comfortable, including lie-flat seats.

In a statement, JetBlue President Marty St. George said adding new flights and introducing Mint service in Phoenix "represents our commitment to providing a truly exceptional travel experience."

"At JetBlue, we recognize the growing demand for premium travel options in the Valley of the Sun and are delighted to meet this need by showing Phoenix even more of what we offer," St. George said.

In other air travel news, Sky Harbor Airport is developing a new terminal to accommodate future growth, and a startup airline from JetBlue's founder announced a new route out of Phoenix . If you're looking for an airfare deal, here's where you can fly for $100 round trip in May .

Here's what to know about JetBlue Mint and new flights from Phoenix.

Where can you fly on JetBlue from Phoenix?

JetBlue will expand two seasonal routes from once daily to twice daily and reintroduce a seasonal route is returning for 2024-25:

  • New York City via John F. Kennedy International Airport, twice daily starting Oct. 27.
  • Boston , twice daily starting Oct. 27.
  • Fort Lauderdale , once daily starting Oct. 25.

JetBlue's Mint experience will be available for all these routes. The added seasonal flights will operate through March 29, 2024.

What does Mint on JetBlue get you?

JetBlue Mint offers lie-flat seats that can convert into beds, complemented by adaptive foam cushions, comforters and pillows from bedding company Tuft & Needle.

JetBlue offers a mix of Mint seats and Mint suites. The suites include doors for added privacy, direct aisle access, an extra seat and space to work, lounge and entertain.

How much do JetBlue Mint seats cost?

JetBlue Mint fares vary by the date and route.

For a Nov. 14-18 itinerary from Phoenix, The Arizona Republic found Mint seats from $494 one way to Boston, from $535 one way to New York and $732 one way to Fort Lauderdale.

Is JetBlue Mint the same as first class?

While the price and features for JetBlue Mint are comparable to other airlines' first class and business class seats, JetBlue calls it a "premium travel experience," not first class.

Is JetBlue Mint class worth it?

When comparing JetBlue Mint to first-class tickets on similar routes with American Airlines and Delta Air Lines, JetBlue tends to have more affordable fares for its premium offerings.

The Phoenix-New York route with JetBlue costs $1,066 round trip in Mint class on Nov. 14-18. That's slightly cheaper than the lowest-priced first-class nonstop ticket with Delta for the same dates, which came to $1,117, and almost $400 less than the $1,445 it would cost to fly first class with American on a similar itinerary. (Delta and American, like JetBlue, also fly nonstop between Phoenix and JFK Airport.)

Industry and customer reviews of JetBlue Mint highlight the convenience. Mint passengers get their own check-in line. Other perks include two free checked bags. JetBlue bag fees are $35-$40 for the first bag and $50-$60 for the second bag.

Are JetBlue Mint seats bigger?

Lie-flat seats on JetBlue Mint are 6 feet, 8 inches long, the longest of any domestic carrier in the U.S., according to JetBlue.

Is JetBlue Mint always lie-flat?

All JetBlue Mint seats are lie-flat, according to JetBlue .

Are drinks free on JetBlue Mint?

JetBlue Mint includes free drinks and in-flight meals that rotate seasonally and vary by region. The drink menu features beer, wine, liquor and cocktails.

A food menu for eastbound and southbound flights included pan-roasted chicken with artichokes, cavatelli with eggplant rosso sauce, marinated feta and parmesan cheese, and flat iron steak with roasted fennel.
