Affliate-Disclosure

Planning for Palacio Barolo Tours

When we first decided to visit the Palacio Barolo in Buenos Aires, we knew little about this historic and cultural structure.  But all of that changed after taking one of the incredibly interesting and informative Palacio Barolo Tours.

The tour describes the architecturally unique Palacio Barolo constructed from 1919 to 1923 by Louis Barolo who was inspired by Dante’s great work, the Divine Comedy.

✅ Amazing vista of the city of Buenos Aires from the terrace at the top of the building

✅ Take an elevator that is more than one hundred years old

✅ A unique opportunity to visit a fully furnished 1920s office that represents what the building was like in its heyday.

The Palacio Barolo Tours

If you want to visit the Palacio Barolo the only way you can do that is by taking one of the available tours .  That’s because this unique structure is a fully working office building.

The grand ceiling of the lobby

The Palace tour starts in the main lobby right in front of the ticket kiosk.  While most of the tours are in Spanish, you can book a bilingual tour , which is what we did.  In this case, the guide is fluent in both languages and will describe the features of the building and their significance, first in Spanish, then in English.  We found our guide to be quite thorough and understandable.

While the Barolo Palace is inspired by Dante, the building itself has some interesting architecture that represents Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Gothic styles.  When it was first built it was one of the tallest reinforced concrete buildings in the world and the first Argentine skyscraper .  It is 100 metres high and has 22 storeys (not including the 2 levels in the basement).

Interior of Palacio Barolo

The building, designed by Italian architect Mario Palanti and built for businessman Luigi Barolo, tells the story of The Divine Comedy through its internal architectural design and numerology .  The height of the building at 100 metres represents the 100 cantos (poetic divisions) in the poem.

Interior of the Palacio Barolo

The impressive structure is divided into three parts mimicking the three canticles of the Divine Comedy – Hell, Purgatory and Heaven.  The basement and the ground level of Palacio Barolo represent Hell and are full of dark imagery and grotesque ornaments of dragons and serpents. Originally the glass panels in the floor even had red lights coming from underneath to give the appearance of fire down below.

The marble tiles in the lobby feature motifs of chain links that run across the floor and up the walls.  These chain motifs are coloured red, white and green – the Italian Masonic symbol for Brotherhood.  9 arches on this level represent the 9 circles of Hell.

Storeys 1 through 14 represent the various stages of Purgatory with the imagery and decor on the walls getting progressively lighter towards the higher storeys.  Finally, levels 15 to 21 depict Paradise with more natural light flowing into the building.  The top level, storey 22 is the arched Domo housing the lighthouse where Dante finally meets God.

Looking down through purgatory

There are other numeric symbols associated with the palace including its address on Avenida de Mayo.  The current structure sits on a property originally occupied by 2 separate buildings.  By knocking down both of the original properties, the palace was able to use its preferred address – 1370 Avenido de Mayo.

Inside the corridors of the office building

This was important and intentional because adding up the digits of the address gives a sum of 11 (1+3+7+0) and in Dante’s world, 11 is the number representing transgression.  The number 11 and its multiples are used throughout the symbolism of the palace.  For example, the building has 22 storeys and there are 22 balconies that adorn the front of the Palacio Barolo.

Exterior with the balconies

All of the materials, including the marble and the granite used to construct the building were imported from Italy.

Finest materials

The only exception was the elevators, which were brought in from Switzerland in 1923.  The elevators are still in use and they are also significant as Barolo specifically wanted to have 7 elevators as 7 is one of the master numbers in Dante’s numerology.

100 year old elevator

We actually got a chance to take the elevator up to the 14th storey as part of the tour.

Inside the Swiss elevator

From there we had to climb up 115 stairs from the 14th to the 22nd storey since this is the only way to the top.

Narrow staircase

We emerged inside the glass dome of the lighthouse where there is a large beacon that, when lit, is visible from up to 10 blocks away.   The beacon is illuminated every day for 20 minutes .

Best Views in Buenos Aires

The vista from inside the dome is stunning, offering 360-degree panoramic views of Buenos Aires sprawling below.  From here you can have an unobstructed view of the Avenida de Mayo and the nearby National Congress Building.  You can also see the iconic Obelisk in the distance.

Views of the Congreso

You also get a view out to the Rio de Plata, the estuary that flows to the Atlantic Ocean where, at its widest, it is 226 kilometres across making it the widest river in the world.

The view from the top of this building in Buenos Aires is one of the best in the city and on its own would make the tour worthwhile.

Views of the city

Descending the tight spiral stairs from the Domo we stopped on the Palacio Barolo rooftop of the 21st floor.

Terrace rooftop

The terrace provides more great views of Argentina’s capital city.  From here we were also able to look back up at the glassed-in Domo and admire it from the outside.

Tip of the Domo

The peak is topped with a lily flower which is the symbol of purity and represents the platonic union between Dante and Beatrice whom he had met when he was a boy.  In his poem, Beatrice leads Dante through Paradise on his way to meet God.

At one time, the peak of the dome was adorned with the statue of a condor elevating Dante to heaven.  That statue called the Ascension statue, is no longer there, but a replica has been placed on the ground floor of Palacio Barolo near the main entrance.

Palacio Barolo Office Museum

Several guided tours are available throughout the day and most last about 90 minutes . Our tour included a visit to one of the offices which has been completely decorated with antiques providing a glimpse into the working culture of 1920s Argentina.

Boardroom in the 1920s office

We found this to be a really interesting part of the tour.  The office has several ante-rooms, including a reception area, boardroom and library.  Each room contains vintage pieces of furniture and equipment that would have been used during the time.

Vintage furniture in the office

The walls are filled with displays of old photos, memorabilia and articles describing life in the early 20th Century.

Memorabilia

Outside and down the hall from the entrance to the office is a large foyer that leads to the floors below and above.  In the centre of the foyer is a display featuring statues of a man seated and a man standing.  These represent the designer, Mario Palanti and the owner Luigi Barolo.

If you are lucky enough to be able to take a night tour you will get to indulge in a glass of Argentinean Malbec from the Mendoza Valley in the office boardroom.  You may even get a chance to see a spectacular sunset from the large boardroom windows. But no matter the time of day it is a great view from the front balconies.

Hanging out on the front balcony

Our tour was in the morning so we didn’t get the glass of wine, but we did try on the 1920s period hats scattered throughout the office museum.

Fun Facts About The Palacio Barolo Attraction

✅ This was developed as a high-rise office tower and not for apartments because there are no showers in the building.

✅ There is only one toilet for every 4 offices in the palace

✅ The brightness of the light from the beacon has been dimmed for the last 70 years so as not to reach the harbour and confuse the ships coming into port.

✅ Mario Palanti designed a similar sister building to Palacio Barolo called Palacio Salvo in Montevideo, Uruguay.

✅ Special permission was required to build the palace because its height exceeded the legal limit by more than 4 times.

The Final Word…Palacio Barolo Tours

Buenos Aires is our favourite city in South America primarily for its magnificent architecture that preserves the vibe of old-world Europe.  And one of the best ways to experience this is by taking a tour of the amazing Dante design inspired Palacio Barolo.

This Neo-Romanesque landmark has had such an impact on the history and culture of Buenos Aires that it was designated a National Historic Monument in 1997.

This is definitely a site worth visiting so make sure to put one of the Palacio Barolo Tours on your bucket list when you visit Argentina!

Palacio Barolo

Top choice in Buenos Aires

One of Buenos Aires' most beautiful monuments, this 22-story building has a unique design inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy. Its structure is divided into hell, purgatory and heaven; its height (100m) is a reference to each canto (song); and the number of floors (22) mirrors the number of verses per song. Dreamt up by the Italian architect Mario Palanti, Palacio Barolo was the tallest skyscraper in South America when it was completed in 1923.

You can walk around the gorgeous lobby for free, but it's best to go on a guided tour of the building: you'll get to ride in a vintage 1920s elevator and admire the panoramic views from the rooftop lighthouse. Palacio Barolo Tours offers a wide range of bilingual tours, including thematic tours focusing on architecture, literature, or photography, and nighttime tours that include a wine tasting. See the website for more details or stop at the kiosk on the building's ground level to book a tour.

Note that there's also a new cocktail bar and cafe, Salón 1923 , on the 16th floor of Palacio Barolo: the indoor-outdoor space is a wonderful venue for a coffee or a glass of wine, especially around sunset. It's also a (free) way to get a glimpse of the wonderful views from the building's upper levels without paying for a tour.

Inside Palacio Barolo in Buenos Aires: Step Into Heaven and Hell

Photo of author

Want to get off the beaten path in Buenos Aires? Check out the incredible Palacio Barolo, one of the city’s most interesting buildings.

Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, is known for its architecture . The city’s reluctant moniker is, of course, the “Paris of the South” and all it takes is a stroll along any street to understand how it got this name.

One of the more unique and overlooked building in Buenos Aires is Palacio Barolo , located in the heart of the city.

I initially came across Palacio Barolo on our first weekend living in Buenos Aires. As newbies to this vibrant city, we’d decided to take a walking tour with a local tour company to learn more about the city, its neighbourhoods, Argentine culture – and basic things like how to use public transport.

As we walked along the wide Avenida de Mayo in downtown Buenos Aires, we strolled past Palacio Barolo, gazing up at its curious facade. Because it was a Sunday it was closed. But an inquisitive peek inside the huge glass doorway was all it took for me to go home and immediately book a Palacio Barolo tour .

Here’s why you should also step inside this unique building.

Exterior view of Palacio Barolo showcasing the intricate architecture, featuring rounded balconies with elaborate stonework. The photo is taken from a low angle, highlighting the building's height and the ornate façade against a backdrop of clear sky and tree branches at the top corner.

Palacio Barolo design

Palacio Barolo isn’t your average high-rise. It has one of the most unique back stories.

Commissioned by Italian immigrant and businessman Luis Barolo, it was built in 1923, after only four years of construction. The building’s design was inspired by Dante’s 14th-century poem,  Divine Comedy . Barolo was such a fan of Dante’s that he petitioned to have Dante’s ashes housed here. But, alas, they never ended up here.

So, how does the building mimic Dante’s famous poem?

Palacio Barolo is divided into three parts : the basement and ground floor are Hell, the first to fourteenth floors are Purgatory, and floors 15 to 22 are Heaven. At the top, there’s a lighthouse with a light so powerful it can be seen in Uruguay.

Interior shot of the grand entry hallway in Palacio Barolo. The space is tall with arched ceilings, ornate columns, and hanging chandeliers. The hallway leads to a backlit glass door at the far end.

At 100 metres (one metre for each canto of the Divine Comedy ) it was the tallest building in South America. That was until 1935 when Edificio Kavanagh (also in Buenos Aires, not far from Palacio Barolo) was completed.

View inside Palacio Barolo featuring a domed information booth with a striking stained glass top in warm orange tones. The booth is framed by grand columns and a large glass window that allows natural light to filter in.

Palacio Barolo is now full of offices (ironically, the offices are actually located on the “Purgatory” floors) but you can still see the splendour of the architecture and of a building built during a time where no expense was spared.

Latin inscriptions are carved into the ceiling in the lobby, and an antique elevator slowly lifts visitors to the higher levels. Statues adorn the columns, and the smooth marble floors and walls would have cost a pretty penny.

A vertiginous view looking down the intricate spiral staircase of Palacio Barolo, decorated with ornamental balusters. The perspective captures the stairwell's descent and the elaborate architectural details on each level, giving a sense of depth.

In “Heaven”, you’ll find the most incredible views across Buenos Aires. Palacio Barolo is one of the few places in Buenos Aires with such vistas across the city. Until we arrived up here, I had no idea just how far and wide we’d be able to see. Even if you’re not interested in the history and architecture of the building, the views alone are worth coming on a tour!

Aerial view of Buenos Aires from Palacio Barolo, showing the expansive cityscape. The foreground features the distinctive red dome of the building, with the sprawling urban grid, green park spaces, and distant buildings stretching to the horizon.

How to book Palacio Barolo tours

The only way to get inside Palacio Barolo is on a guided tour . It’s one of the more unique things to do in Buenos Aires – when we visited, we were the only foreign tourists on the tour.

You can book tickets on the day at the kiosk inside the Palacio Barolo lobby. The Palacio Barolo booking website always appears to be being updated, which is frustrating (although their team is very responsive on email), so I recommend booking a tour with an external company instead.

Book a daytime Palacio Barolo tour (tours are in English and Spanish). Or try something more special with an evening tour. The evening tours of Palacio Barolo include a glass of wine. I unfortunately never did this but it looks like a fun way to see the building.

Be warned that the tour does involve some steep climbing in tight stairwells as you get closer to the top. It’s really steep and if you have a fear of small spaces, you may not want to go all the way to the top of the building – but that is where the best views are!

Palacio Barolo Buenos Aires

Palacio Barolo is a beautiful and incredibly unique office building in the heart of Buenos Aires and one of the only ways to see the city from above. The palace was designated a National Historic Monument in 1997, its fascinating concept making it not only historically significant but a joy to see. Luis Barolo, the owner, commissioned the construction of the palace with his idea of making a mausoleum for the Italian poet Dante. Barolo believed as many did at the time that Europe would be destroyed by war and he felt it crucial to relocate important relics of history to where they would be safe. The building was designed to tell the story of Dante’s most famous poem, The Divine Comedy. Countless design elements depict Hell, Purgatory and the Heavens from the poem as you ascend the palace to the 22nd floor. When completed in 1923 it stood at 100 meters tall, one meter for every canto of the Divine Comedy and was officially the tallest building in South America at the time. So tall infact that special permission was required to build it as it was almost 4 times taller than the maximum building height allowed on Av. de Mayo at the time. As fate would have it Dantes ashes were never sent to Buenos Aires and Palacio Barolo became perhaps the most beautiful yet unused mausoleum in the world.

The Architecture

Architect Mario Palanti who also was a student of the Divine Comedy set out to fill the building with references to the poem and poet. No details were overlooked from quotes in Latin to the official opening being held on the anniversary of the poet’s death. The palace is topped with a bronze dome, whose balconies were inspired by a Hindu temple dedicated to love and serves as the emblem of the union of Dante with his beloved Beatrice. The dome was originally topped with a statue of a condor (vulture) with the body of Dante elevating him to paradise. The dome also houses an incredibly powerful lighthouse that is visible across Río de la Plata in Uruguay. Even more incredible is that Palanti actually built an almost-twin for Palacio Barolo, Palacio Salvo in Montevideo, Uruguay. His idea was that the light from each would meet in the centre of the river and serve as a welcome to boats arriving into Río de la Plata. Unfortunately, despite both lighthouses being powerful enough due to the curvature of the earth the lights do not touch, it was a beautiful thought though. There are several European styles of architecture on display in this building, another attempt to preserve what was feared to be lost if Europe was destroyed by war. As a result the Palace has always caused some puzzlement with so many diverse styles on display it is impossible to pin it down to one school of design. It does however fit in perfectly in this city infamous for having a least a few beautiful examples of every major architecture style you can think of.

How to see the Palace

The only way to see the Palace is with a guided tour as the building is still used as an office space for a horde of businesses and they kind of frown upon you wandering around unsupervised. There are days tours several times a day from Monday through Saturday for $250 pesos . These tours are conducted in Spanish and English and show you some key design features honoring Dante before ascending up beautiful elevators decorated in caste iron. At the top you are treated to an incredible 360 degree view of the city, in particular a perfect view down Av. de Mayo of Congress. On the way down we stopped off at a replica of one of an offices from the 1920´s, complete with all the appropriate decorations and office equipment. On this tour you are also able to climb the tower and sit more or less inside the lighthouse. There are evening tours everyday except Tuesdays and Sundays at 8pm. These tours come with a bigger price tag, 345 peso, but include a glass of wine, a live violin or cello performance and of course the chance to experience the city lights from above. The tours have limited places so you need to make a reservation but you can pay on the day when you get there so it’s completely painless to organised. And there is even a special tour every New Year’s Eve where you can sip on wine inside the lighthouse and enjoy the fireworks of the city as the clock strikes midnight.

I took a four-week course at Vamos and was delighted with the experience. The course is conversation-intensive, which was incredibly useful given that speaking tends to be the most difficult skill.

Vamos Spanish Academy offers an outstanding educational experience. I spent a total of 12 exceptional weeks at the school.

I can also recommend highly the home stay feature of the course. I stayed with an Argentinian in the next suburb who only spoke Spanish, but who was very patient with me as I improved.

My Spanish improves by the hour! The staff and academic director do everything in their power to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

ALMA DE BUENOS AIRES $36 ($̶7̶7̶) - Updated 2024

About Us

The Barolo Palace has been part of the lives of  Miqueas and Tomas Thärigen, Directors of Palacio Barolo Tours, for decades. Their passion for the Palace started years before they became a company, even years before their birth, because their passion is part of their family history.

Their great-grandfather Don Carlos Jorio, years after the Barolo’s grand opening, rented the working space where his company later stood. It was that very place where the evening tours’ wine tastings began, back in 2004.

It was their grandmother, Amelia Jorio, who graced the Palace with its lost statue in 2010, by creating a replica of the Ascension sculpture (the one that was stolen and that never arrived at the opening of the Barolo). Her grandson searched for decades for the original statue created by Architect Mario Palanti until, in late 2021, he found part of it 400 km away from the city of Buenos Aires. His brother Tomás, helped him to recover it and exhibit it at the Museum Office (which you will visit in your tour).

Not only do Miqueas and Tomás know the Barolo since childhood from family stories, but they were also the first tour guides of the Barolo Palace, back when the Barolo Palace was not the amazingly restored building that you can appreciate today. Countless and dear are their treasured memories of the very first visitors to the Barolo. So much so, that copies of The Divine Comedy and donations of antiques keep arriving at the offices of Palacio Barolo Tours. People understand how real their affection for the building is. People want them to protect the old memories.

Moved by the desire to continue to give more of themselves to the Barolo, in the 96th anniversary of the Palace they donated the human-scale sculptures of Mario Palanti and Luis Barolo. These are now part of the identity of the Palace, as well as the new Art Decó Information Center located in Barolo Alley, aesthetically aligned with the one that stands there since the beginning of the 20th century.

Over the years, they have been the central cultural advocates of the Barolo Palace: they have created the well-known “Light Events” (free admission art cycles taking place at Barolo Alley); they have organized and celebrated the anniversaries (“birthdays”) of the Palace; they have highlighted the importance of culture in the city of Buenos Aires. Drawing from their vast experience, the Thärigen brothers have incorporated novelties that showcase the Barolo as an icon of Buenos Aires, enhancing its national and international prestige. Since 2015, every October – as do many historic buildings around the world – the Barolo Palace runs the LALCEC-sponsored Breast Cancer Awareness campaign. From the Barolo Lighthouse, Dr. Miqueas Thärigen illuminates the downtown area of Buenos Aires with pink light. In addition to suggesting countless ways for making the Barolo known internationally, Tomas Thärigen has consistently implemented technological improvements in communication, to catapult this almost 100-year-old skyscraper to the 21th century.

In the words of the Thärigen brothers: “By the end of every guided tour, we want our visitors to regard the Barolo Palace as one of the world’s architectural gems, so that they share their experience, thus increasing the number of visitors to the Palace, as well as the building’s cultural heritage. That is our mission.”
