10 of the Most Spiritual Places in the US

06/05/2022 by Emily Becker 1 Comment

Spirituality is a deeply personal journey for each person. To say that one travel destination is somehow “more spiritual” than another truly depends on the individual. For some people, simply being in unobstructed nature feels deeply spiritual. For others, spiritual places are those with a rich history of worship or religious significance. These are all valid, because who are we to decide what is sacred to anybody?

That said, there are some places in the United States that are particularly spiritual, based on the types of travelers they attract, what they have to offer to seekers, and their history. I think it’s important to keep in mind that many of these are considered spiritual today because of the beliefs and practices of Native Americans, who have a special sacred bond with them. This is one of numerous reasons why it’s essential to visit each of these locations with the utmost respect for nature, and the native people who are considered its guardians.

If you’re looking to incorporate spirituality into your next trip within the US, consider any one of these magical places:

Table of Contents

1. Sedona, Arizona

most spiritual places in the us Sedona

As Sedona is part of one most powerful energy vortexes in the world , it’s no surprise that it’s one of the most spiritual spots in the country. Some believe that it encompasses a giant energy vortex — a large swirl of earthly energy — while others identify four key vortexes: at Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, and Boynton Canyon.

Sedona also represents a more New Age form of spirituality that focuses on things like energy healing , yoga, and sound baths. Here you’ll find an abundance of wellness spas, healing centers, yoga studios, and other spiritual businesses. There are also plenty of neat Airbnbs in Sedona that are particularly peaceful and have a healing energy.

Being surrounded by red-rock canyons, whimsical forests, and even a few waterfalls , the sheer fact that Sedona is so naturally beautiful might be enough for you to consider it a spiritual destination. From venturing to the bright turquoise waters at Havasu Falls nearby, to checking out the Chapel of the Holy Cross, to doing a sound-bath session, there are lots of spiritual things to do in Sedona for anyone looking to connect to nature, whatever higher spirit they believe in, or just themselves.

2. Big Island, Hawai’i

most spiritual places in the us hawaii

You could easily say that any one of the Hawaiian Islands are particularly spiritual in their own way, but there’s something extra special about the Big Island. The goddess Pele, who is responsible for Hawai’i’s fire and volcanic activity, is especially present there, as this is where four of the state’s active volcanoes reside. You can hike them at Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, which is also an epic stargazing spot on a clear night.

Another spiritually charged location on the Big Island is the site of the Pu’u Loa petroglyphs , which is also within the same national park. This important historical site is incredibly important to Hawaiian spirituality, so don’t miss it.

In addition to the Big Island’s spectacular landscape and overall beauty, there are many destinations there for spiritual travelers. From retreat centers to yoga studios and historical sites where you can learn more about the island and its people, there are plenty of opportunities to find the connection you’re looking for.

3. Joshua Tree, California

most spiritual places in the us Joshua tree

As a hugely popular getaway from Los Angeles and San Diego, Joshua Tree receives all kinds of nature-loving visitors who come to see the namesake Joshua trees and surrounding desert. Many people find the desert to be spiritual, evoking a sense of mystery and magical allure. I mean, the Joshua trees themselves are kind of mystical, don’t you think?

For many years, people have also believed that Joshua tree attracts alien life forms. They’ve even built specific structures, like the Integratron building, to communicate with them. Nowadays, the Integratron is where you can go for an intense sound-healing session. There are other places with a similar feel in Joshua Tree as well, like the Desert Reset retreat and many yoga studios.

Whether you’re curious about aliens, dream of waking up to a desert view , or are searching for healing, you’re bound to find something spiritual in this special spot.

Find out what else there is to do in Joshua Tree National Park here.

4. Mount Shasta, California

Chakras 101: The Root Chakra

Mount Shasta in California has a reputation for being the Earth’s root chakra . That’s right, some believe that planet Earth has chakra energy centers just like the human body. Although mighty Shasta hasn’t erupted in 200-300 years, it’s still an active volcano and holds a great deal of energy. This concentration of energy, aka a vortex, is the reason why so many spiritual seekers visit the mountain.

Native Americans have long visited Mount Shasta to perform rituals and ceremonies dedicated to the Creator. These still happen today, but now you’ll see a more diverse group of people visiting for similar purposes. You’ll find reiki healers here, along with meditation teachers and other people hoping to help travelers on their healing journey.

5. Taos, New Mexico

most spiritual places in the us Taos

Taos, a small city in the high desert of New Mexico, is one of the oldest and most enchanting cities in the American West. In fact, Taos has been casting a magical spell on its visitors since Spanish colonists first arrived in 1540. There you’ll find many small adobe chapels that capture the essence of the town’s spirituality and date back hundreds of years.

Nowadays, Taos is home to one of the most innovative “biotecture” communities in the United States. It has over 70 homes, called earthships, which exist completely off the grid. It’s inspiring to experience a community dedicated to sustainability and safeguarding Mother Nature’s resources. There’s something quite spiritually healing to know that so many people are working hard to live more sustainably.

If you’re looking for a beautiful place for a meditation retreat, Taos just might be the spot for you. Retreat centers like Blue Sky Retreat and High Frequency Loft offer meditation, yoga, sound healing, and ecstatic dance.

6. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe attracts a whole host of spiritual healers, body workers, yoga teachers, artists, and even psychics — and has been doing so for quite some time! Some say that it is the original spiritual capital of the United States, and I can’t blame them. There is an overall mystical vibe there, which is evident throughout the art galleries of Canyon Road, where I suggest you start exploring the city.

Just 30 minutes from downtown Santa Fe is the historical Santuario de Chimayó, a sacred place of worship that dates back to even before the shrine was built in 1813. Even if you aren’t Catholic or Christian, this holy site is said to have healing powers for anyone that visits.

Santa Fe is also home to a world-famous Buddhist monastery, the Upaya Institute and Zen Center . This spiritual center offers daily Zen meditation sessions, as well as other special events, talks, and retreats.

With this combination of Buddhist philosophy, Catholic sacred sites, Native American spirituality, and New Age practices, you can see that Santa Fe has something for almost any kind of spiritual journey.

7. Crater Lake, Oregon

most spiritual places in the us Oregon

What is now Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the entire country, was once volcanic Mount Mazama. Due to a spectacular eruption, the mountain essentially blew its top off and became the giant crater that we see today. Eventually it filled with water, which is how we now have the beautiful and sacred Crater Lake.

For hundreds of years, if not thousands, the lake has been a holy site for Native Americans, particularly the Klamath tribe. Making dangerous and heroic spirit quests to the lake has been part of Klamath traditions for centuries and still continues to this day.

Visiting Crater Lake National Park can be a deeply spiritual experience, just for the sake of spending time in nature by the lake. You won’t find many retreat centers here, like you will in other places on this list. That said, this ideal for travelers who feel most spiritual when connecting with nature.

8. Moab, Utah

most spiritual places in the us Moab

Just a 15-minute drive from the entrance to magical Arches National Park , Moab has one of the most otherworldly landscapes you’ll find in the United States. Look around and marvel at Mother Nature’s work of art. You’ll see pristine arches, plunging canyons, and other rock formations that are as puzzling as they are beautiful.

These formations in Moab at Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park (also nearby) are deeply sacred to Native American communities, who worship them as beings and protectors of the Earth. The peace brought by the desert inspires spiritualists to come and connect with Mother Nature through meditation, sound healing, and other ceremonies.

Red Moon Lodge is a bed-and-breakfast retreat with special spaces dedicated to yoga, meditation, and prayer. The whole place is solar-powered and dedicated to sustainability. This is another big plus for those of you who want to experience the spiritual magic of Moab in a more eco-conscious fashion.

9. Bahá’í House of Worship, Wilmette, Illinois

most spiritual places in the us

Just 20 minutes from Chicago is the beautifully ornate Bahá’í House of Worship in Wilmette, Illinois. It is the only Bahá’í temple in the United States, and it attracts worshipers from all faiths. The Bahá’í faith itself includes teachings from all of the major religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism. The basic teachings of Bahá’ísm include the oneness of humanity, racial and social justice, and other important pillars.

The temple itself is a meeting place for people of all faiths, not just Bahá’ís. I’ve been to the temple a few times. I think it’s a beautiful site which embraces all people regardless of identity. The inside is just as ornate as the outside and remains silent when there are no events going on. It’s a wonderful spot to spend a day reflecting, journaling, or engaging in whatever type of worship that suits you.

10. St. Augustine, Florida

most spiritual places in the us

As America’s oldest city, it’s no surprise that Saint Augustine has quite an interesting narrative. With over 500 years of human history to behold, it has a reputation of having several highly spiritual sites. One of them is Juan Ponce de León’s alleged “fountain of youth.” This is where the Spanish conquistador believed he found an indigenous secret to immortality. The Timucua tribes who lived in the area before the Spanish conquest convinced Ponce de León of the fountain’s magical properties, which is one of the reasons why America’s first-ever Catholic mission was built there.

Even though much of the legend behind the fountain of youth remains a mystery, the old-timey feel of Saint Augustine offers a magical experience. The Spanish architecture and ancient churches add to the mystical quality of the city, making this a very spiritual place for many visitors.

I don’t know about you, but a trip to any of these places sounds like an amazing way to recharge my spiritual battery. I feel especially connected to nature in sites that have a special spiritual significance.

What makes somewhere especially spiritual to you?

The Integratron: A Fusion of Art, Science, and Magic

Where : Landers, California

The Vibe :  The geological phenomenon was originally designed to house powers of rejuvenation, human-life extension, and anti-gravity time travel in the heart of California’s Mojave desert. It was built in the 1950s by aircraft mechanic and ufologist George Van Tassel  — under instruction from an alien from Venus he encountered during a space trip. (Hey, that's the story!) The structure, made of wood, fiberglass, and concrete, was sadly never put to the test as a vehicle for time travel (Van Tassel died in 1978). But you can step inside for meditative sonic-healing sound baths sessions, where participants lie down in the main chamber and immerse themselves in harmonic sounds produced by quartz crystal bowls. In the supposedly perfect wooden geometric structure, the experience is so soothing, you'll feel like you're actually bathing in sound. Musicians like Arcade Fire, Moby, and the Smashing Pumpkins have visited the dome in search of new inspiration and larger-than-life vibrations. Sound baths happen bi-monthly and are on a first-come-first-serve basis for $20 per person (private sessions and group rates are available, too).

Good to Know : Aqua Soleil Hotel & Mineral Waters , a contemporary hotel with bright and airy rooms and a spa with 24-hour access to heated mineral pools, is a 40-minute drive from The Integratron. The Ace Hotel and Swim Club , a mid-century boutique hotel and oasis in Palm Spring’s high-desert paradise, is filled with quirky characters and a large outdoor pool and spa. (Plus weeknight karaoke and bingo.) If Airbnb is more your thing, Joshua Tree House is a two-bed, two-bath 1949 hacienda located ten minutes from the west entrance of Joshua Tree National Park.

How to Get There : Drive 2.5 hours from Los Angeles or 60 minutes from Palm Springs.

Headlands Dark Sky Park: An All-Night Magic Show

Where: Lake Michigan, Michigan

The Vibe : This pitch-black, 550-acre expanse on the shores of Lake Michigan is made up of undeveloped beaches and an ideal low-latitude location to spot the aurora borealis — a mecca for stargazers. Due to the low pollution levels, this 24/7 park offers unobstructed views that allow spectators to see more of the universe above.

Good to Know : Technically, there's no camping allowed, however the park is open 365 days a year and you're allowed to stay all night. (No sleep 'til sunrise.) The Dark Sky Park offers numerous public viewing nights at Headlands Observatory for $3 a person and many other evening events. The best time to see the northern lights are between September and April. If you're not up for an all-nighter, plan ahead and rent a room in The Guest House , a large home on the property that accommodates about 20 guests with private bedroom and bathrooms.

How to Get There : The Headlands is located about two miles west of downtown Mackinaw City in northwest Michigan.

Salvation Mountain: One Man's Painted Heaven

Where : Niland, California The Vibe : Leonard Knight’s self-built 50-foot clay mountain is inscribed with religious passages that focus on a simple message: God is Love. Knight began his sculptural tribute after a hot air balloon journey failed in this patch of the desert near the Salton Sea. He planned to stay for a week, but the project took 30 years to complete and has since become an ever-growing community art project, as Knight encouraged visitors to bring paint and supplies for their own contributions. It is estimated that the mountain contains over 100,000 gallons of paint and thousands of hay bales (the basis of the sculpture).

Good to Know : Follow the rainbow to The Saguaro in Palm Springs and lounge by the pool with views of the hotel's technicolor suites. Or rent a desert cruiser bike and head to the Korakia Pensione , a subdued Mediterranean oasis where you can reflect on your visit to Salvation Mountain while relaxing on private daybeds.

How to Get There : Salvation Mountain is located south of I-10 freeway, about five miles east of Hwy 111 at Niland . It's a 90-minute drive from Palm Springs.

Mount Shasta: An Alpine Community Where Heaven and Earth Meet

Where: Mount Shasta, California

The Vibe : The 14,179-foot ice-covered dormant volcano in Northern California is highly praised by spiritual seekers as one of the most powerful energy vortexes in North America. With over 26,000 visitors a year (many of whom never leave), the peak's high-vibrational energy has lead to many shamantic awakenings, spiritual growth pursuits, emotional restorations, and a-ha moments. "It does not matter where you go on the mountain," wrote Dianne Robbins about her trip here. "The mountain's energy is everywhere." The Shasta worshippers are often compared to Ancient Greeks who were obsessed with Olympus, or to Moses and his Sinai. Legend has it there is even a hidden city inside the peak inhabited by higher-dimensional beings called Lemurians, and the saucer-shaped clouds that often gather at the summit are engineered for the disguise of alien-aircraft arrivals. Talk about far out.

Good to Know : Guided meditations, vision quests, and hiking excursions are available through Shasta Vortex Adventures . The Trinity Divide trails are especially breathtaking with no expert hiking experience required. The three-mile Heart Lake Trail takes hikers up to Castle Peak with stunning views of Mount Shasta's reflection over the small and serene lake. The best time to visit is the late spring when temperatures are in the low 60s, cooler than the average 75° during peak tourist season in the summer. Nestled at the foot of Mt. Shasta, McCloud Hotel is an ideal location for guests hoping to take advantage of the surrounding river and its three waterfalls. Railroad Park Caboose offers the opportunity to stay in your own refurbished vintage Cotton Belt railroad car on a beautiful 50-acre private property.

Monument Valley, Utah.

Monument Valley: America's Wild West

Visitors come to drive the 17-mile scenic-loop drive, admire the majestic, free-standing sandstone buttes, and imagine themselves embracing a kind of let-their-hair-down freedom, like Thelma & Louise . This sprawling, 92,000-acre valley is home to the Navajo Nation and remains their tribal-owned sacred land dedicated to their Creator. In additional to the loop drive, visitors can experience this ever-changing natural beauty by hiking the eleven trails and lookouts in the park. A famous spot is John Ford's point, where visitors can recreate the iconic image of a solo horseback rider overlooking the high plateau at the edge of the desert.

Crater Lake: The Big Blue

Where : Klamath County, Oregon The Vibe: Formed in 4680 B.C. by the volcanic explosion of Mount Mazama, the six-mile-wide, 1,943-foot-deep Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the U.S.; the ninth deepest in the world; and is famous for its crystal-clear water. Worshipped by the indigenous Klamath Native Americans, this sacred lake is known for engendering a spiritual and religious-like wonder: For centuries, the tribe's shaman was the only one allowed to visit the lake, as many feared looking into the depths too long would invite life-long sorrow ... or death. There are no streams of water in or out of the lake, which explains its clarity and vibrant blue appearance. Visitors often seek the Old Man of The Lake , a mysteriously implanted log that has been sitting in place for one hundred years, and the bright, rust-colored Pumice Castle that juts out on the eastern wall of the caldera . Wizard Island , named for its resemblance to a sorcerer’s hat (pre-Harry Potter), is the top of a cinder-cone volcano within Crater Lake, where one can marvel at 800-year-old trees.

Good to Know: Crater Lake Park is snow-covered from October through June. Peak season is between June and August, when the park's roads, trails, and facilities tend to be fully operational. Crater Lake Lodge overlooks the lake and offers guests a place to unwind after a full day of swimming, hiking, fishing, and touring.

How to Get There : The closest airports are in Klamath Falls (63 miles from park headquarters) and Medford (75 miles). Car rentals are available at both airports. Amtrak provides daily service to Klamath Falls and a shuttle runs from the Amtrak station to Rim Village between late June and early October.

El Santuario de Chimayó: The Teeniest-Tiniest, Holiest Church

Where: Chimayó , New Mexico

The Vibe: The 19th-century adobe-style church is a historical landmark housing "holy dirt" in the foothills of the Sangre de Christo Mountains in northern New Mexico. The National Park Service has called it one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage centers in the United States, with more than 300,000 visitors a year journeying to find deep healing of the mind, body, and spirit. It is reported that during Holy Week, pilgrims make the 30-mile trek from Sante Fe, and even more remarkably, the 90-mile trek from Albuquerque. Returning pilgrims leave behind testimonials of the healing power of the holy dirt, which is dug out of a tiny well named El Pocito, with handouts suggesting silent prayers to say as you rub it on the part of your body in need of its healing powers. The tiny church and its grounds remain an unexplained wonder.

Good to Know: The landmark is an easy drive from Chimayó Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi , a warm, cozy spot nestled in the heart of Santa Fe, with Navajo rugs, hand-carved doors, beamed ceilings, and sandstone walls. The city's oldest hotel, Hotel St. Francis , is beautiful and simple. Plus, it comes with access to hotel concierge Inger Boudouris, who has been working there since 1987 and knows just about everything there is to know about Santa Fe.

How to Get There: El Santuario de Chimayó is a 30-minute drive from downtown Sante Fe and a one-hour drive from Taos.

Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp, Florida.

Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp: Psychic Capital of the World

Where: Volusia County, Florida

The Vibe: A small community between Daytona and Orlando is home to an unusually large number of psychics and mediums (it is called Psychic Capital of the World) and is heavily infiltrated by paranormal-seeking-tourists. The spiritualist camp started in 1875 by George P. Colby , a trance medium who traveled the country giving readings and seances and was instructed by his Native American spirit guide — named Seneca — to build a spiritual camp in Florida. Today, the residents practice the religion of Spiritualism, based on the guiding principle of one continuous life. Visitors are welcome to the camp with lodging provided at The Cassadaga Hotel , which has a 1920s speakeasy vibe and "friendly" spirits, of which guests are warned on the hotel's website. Fun fact: Bright Eyes wrote their album, Cassadaga , here, and Tom Petty alludes to the camp in his song "Casa Dega." Tarot card readings are available by resident mediums, as well as historical property tours, and animal spirit meditations.

Good to Know: Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp offers guided tours Thursday through Saturday. Seminars and workshops are offered weekly on the camp's website. Once you have enough of the paranormal, head 30 minutes north to a very different type of camp in Orlando, Florida, and experience Disney World the adult way at Grande Lakes.

How to Get There: The camp is located off I-4 between Orlando and Daytona Beach.

Maunakea Observatory: See the Stars Above the Sea

Where: Big Island, Hawaii

The Vibe: The summit of Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii, is the site of the world's largest astronomical observatory, with telescopes operated by astronomers from eleven countries in the world. It is the highest island mountain on Earth, rising 32,000 feet above the Pacific Ocean floor, and the only place in the world where you can drive from sea level to 14,000 feet in two hours. Its unique atmosphere allows for the highest number of cloud-free, clear-sky nights in the world. From the observatory, visitors can gaze into the cosmos, watch moonrises from infrared telescopes, and check out "moon valley," where the Apollo astronauts test-drove their rover before the 1969 odyssey to the moon.

Good to Know : You can drive up all the way to the summit during daytime, weather permitting, and if you have four-wheel drive. (Be aware of high-altitude effects). At night, local volunteer astronomers set up telescopes in front of the visitor station and supervise guests as part of their free nighttime stargazing program. The lower slopes of Mauna Kea are also popular for hunting, hiking, and mountain sightseeing. Once you are ready to rest your eyes, stay at a dreamy, tropical fern forest known as Tree House.

How to Get There : From Waimea, the trip takes about one hour; from Kona, the trip takes about 60-90 minutes.

Big Horn Medicine Wheel: A 10,000-Year-Old Astrology App

Where: Lovell, Wyoming

The Vibe: Situated in a national forest dating back 10,000 years, the phenomenal large stone structure made from local limestone is a sacred landmark of scientific inquiry used to predict astrological events. It was built by the Plains Native Americans perhaps as long as 800 years ago, and now is protected by the Crow Native Americans. The wheel is located at the summit of Medicine Mountain and is said to be a locus point for the balancing energies of the earth, sun, and moon. At the center of the wheel is a donut-shaped pile of 28-limestone rocks — 28 being a sacred number associated with the lunar cycle. Today, the Big Horn Medicine Wheel continues to help the Crow tribe predict the summer solstice and represents the beauty of changing seasons and new life.

Good to Know:  The Wheel is available for visits only during the summer months. Native Americans have placed prayer flags along with other sacred symbolic items around a circular fence that protects the sculpture. It is expected that visiting tourists respect these items and do not disturb.

How to Get There: Drive 32.6 miles east of Lovell. Take US 14A and turn off onto a marked gravel road (Forest Road 12).

The United States’ Most Mystical Places to Visit

Joshua Tree California

Some places have a certain energy: You feel it the moment you arrive—or, in some cases, the moment you even begin to think about visiting. And while some of those places—like Machu Picchu, Easter Island , or the temples of Tibet —are known worldwide as destinations where spiritual seekers, vortex hunters, and healers gather, there are places even closer to home that hold a similar cosmic draw. Below, a look some of the United States’ most mystical places to visit.

Creative types began flocking to the remote region near Joshua Tree National Park in the ’60s, and many of that decade’s bohemian spiritual leanings remain. Located where the Mojave and Colorado Deserts meet, the surreal landscape is punctuated with gnarled Yucca trees, formidable rock formations, and pastel-shaded sunsets—and sure to lull anyone into a meditative state. And if the scenery doesn’t do it, the sound bath at the famed Integratron will. Where to Stay: The High Desert House or The Joshua Tree House

Mount Shasta California

This dormant volcano in northern California is believed to be one of the strongest energy vortexes in North America, and tales of its unexplained mysteries abound—one legend even claims that a hidden city filled with advanced beings from a lost continent hides beneath its peaks. Visitors report feeling “drawn” to the mountain, with overwhelming feelings of lightness and peace coming over them in its presence. Where to Stay: McCloud Hotel

For strong cosmic vibes, head to the state of Utah, which is now home to eight of the best places to stargaze in the United States. This year, Cedar Breaks National Monument —a stunning park with 10,000-foot-high vistas—was granted International Dark Sky Park status, a designation reserved only for places with the darkest night skies. Where to Stay: Point Supreme Campground

St Augustine Florida

When it comes to historic, haunting American cities, New Orleans and Savannah, Georgia, have well-cemented reputations. But the title of America’s oldest city actually belongs to St. Augustine, which was founded in 1565. Of course, a place with over 500 years of human history is bound to hold its share of mysteries: Residents claim that the city’s iconic lighthouse, Historic District, and the alleged site of Ponce de León’s Fountain of Youth are all hotbeds of spiritual energy. Where to Stay: The Collector Inn

Dramatic views, crashing waves, active volcanoes: The forces of nature are on dynamic display on the Big Island. Many of the Hawaiian Islands’ most sacred monuments and temples—Honaunau National Park, Kealakekua Bay, Mookini Heaiau State Monument—are located on the Big Island, which is also said to be the home of Pele, the volcano goddess. Where to Stay: The Fern Forest Tree House

Sedona Arizona

The tranquil desert town surrounded by otherworldly red mountains is a famed center of the New Age movement, with a multitude of energy vortexes, crystal shops, and healing centers. Where to Stay: El Portal or Amara Resort

Crater Lake Oregon

Nearly everyone who has peered into the bright blue abyss that is the U.S.’s deepest lake (1,943 feet!) admits they’ve been moved by its stunning natural beauty; some even insist that the electromagnetic energy flowing from the lake is on par with that of sacred places like Tibet or Peru. But the Klamath tribes who populated the area had a more ominous perspective on the water-filled crater: They warned that looking too long into its depths would invite “death and lasting sorrow,” and only the tribe’s shaman was allowed to visit the lake. Nowadays, reports of UFO and Big Foot sightings are not uncommon. Where to Stay: Crater Lake Lodge

Spiritual seekers have long been drawn to this secluded town nestled in a valley below the Topa Topa mountains. Some swear it sits on an electromagnetic vortex; others claim the area’s hot springs have healing properties. Where to Stay: Ojai Rancho Inn

For a Spiritual Retreat:

Kaua’i sacred places, hawaii.

If you spot flowers or leis on the ground while visiting Kauai, you may have stumbled on an offering at one of the island’s many ancient sacred sites. One such place is Honopu Beach. Ancient Hawaiians believed their chiefs’ bones gained supernatural power after death. So, warriors would climb the Honopu cliffside with the bodies of their deceased leaders to hide them in caves. To ensure the location remained secret, they would then jump to their deaths. Honopu beach remains difficult to reach today, there are no pathways to the area. You will either need to swim 400 yards to reach it or appreciate it from a distance via boat.

Mount Shasta, California

Considered a sacred site by many indigenous communities, Mount Shasta is a majestic mountain located in Northern California. Legend has it that the mountain is home to a powerful vortex of energy and serves as an interdimensional portal that can transport people to other dimensions and realms. The legend of the mountain’s energy vortex dates back to ancient times when Native American tribes considered it a place of spiritual significance. Visitors can take guided tours to learn more about the spiritual significance of the mountain or simply enjoy its natural beauty through hiking trails, waterfalls, and hot springs in the surrounding area. Whether you believe in its mystical qualities or not, Mount Shasta’s stunning landscape alone is worth the trip.

Kukaniloko Birthstones, Hawaii

The Kukaniloko Birthstones is a sacred site located in the “piko” of O’ahu, Hawaii (the center of the island said to possess focused spiritual energy). This mystical destination was once used as a birthing site for members of the Hawaiian royal families. It is one of the most important cultural sites in Hawaii. The area is marked with 180 stones, symbolizing the birthplaces of many high-ranking chiefs and ali’i (nobility). The Kukaniloko Birthstones are also an ideal spot for stargazing thanks to its remote location away from light pollution. Researchers even speculate that the rocks were arranged for astrological orientation — a Pacific Island Stonehenge of sorts.

Crater Lake, Oregon

Crater Lake in southern Oregon is another mystical destination that shouldn’t be missed. Known for its crystal-clear blue water, this lake was formed more than 7,000 years ago when Mount Mazama erupted and collapsed. Many Native American tribes consider the lake to be a sacred site and believe that it’s inhabited by powerful and benevolent spirits who are often called upon for guidance, protection, and healing. Visitors can hike around the rim of the crater or take a boat tour to Wizard Island, a small volcanic island in the center of the lake. The area also offers opportunities for camping, fishing, and stargazing under some of the darkest skies in the country. Whether you’re seeking spiritual inspiration or simply want to connect with nature, Crater Lake is a must-see destination.

For a Meditative Experience:

Morikami japanese gardens, florida .

Morikami’s series of gardens mirror the major periods of Japanese landscape design. From the zigzagging bridges of the Hein period to the stone Kotoji lanterns of the Meiji era, it makes an ideal setting for introspection. After strolling the paths along its grounds, koi-filled lake, and worldclass bonsai collection, explore different forms of meditation at the rock garden and the Seishin-an Tea House. While Karesansui raking can clear the mind of distractions, an Omotesenke-style tea ceremony teaches mindfulness through a carefully choreographed ritual involving all the senses.

Hot Springs, Arkansas

Hot Springs, Arkansas is a mystical destination that has been revered for centuries. The warm, healing, natural hot springs have long been used by Native American tribes for medicinal purposes. Today, visitors can soak in these restorative waters at bathhouses throughout the city, including historic ones like Buckstaff Bathhouse and Quapaw Baths & Spa . Along with its natural wonders, Hot Springs also boasts a rich history as a gangster hideout during the Prohibition era. And as the hometown of former president Bill Clinton. Visitors can explore the history of this charming city on foot. You can also take a tour on one of the downtown trolleys.

Taos, New Mexico

Taos Pueblo is an ancient, 1000-year-old building belonging to a Native American tribe of Puebloan people. The pueblo has been continuously inhabited since its construction, making it a living ancient village. Taos Pueblo is a designated National Historic . Intricate pottery and paintings decorate many parts of the pueblo, adding to its mystical atmosphere. This enchanting destination is also surrounded by areas of natural beauty, such as the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.

For an Archaeological Pilgrimage:

Mesa verde, colorado.

Another archaeological site not to be missed is Mesa Verde, an ancient cliff dwelling tucked beneath a craggy overhang. This rocky residence is sacred to today’s native Americans. One Puebloan park ranger describe it as the place “where the ancestors whisper to you.” Pay close attention to the kivas — round, underground rooms used for religious dances and other ceremonial practices. The baseball-sized holes near the firepit represented the portal through which the ancestors emerged from the underworld.

Chaco Canyon, New Mexico

Chaco Canyon in New Mexico is a mystical place that dates back over a thousand years. The area is home to the ruins of an ancient Pueblo civilization that built remarkable structures using stone, mud, and timber. These structures are an astronomical wonder due to their precise alignment with the sun and stars. Chaco Canyon also has a network of roads that connect different buildings, showing the advanced planning skills of those who lived there thousands of years ago. The park also celebrates cosmically themed events like the annual Astronomy Festival, the spring and fall equinox, and the summer and winter solstice

Bear Butte, South Dakota

Bear Butte is an ancient, sacred area where Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, and many other Native Americans past and present have performed vision quests and other ceremonies. Its majestic peak rises above the plains of South Dakota and draws visitors from all over the world. The site has long been a place of spiritual healing and reflection. There are many ancient trails and valleys to explore, from easy strolls through the valley to more challenging hikes up the mountain. Along the way, you’ll find plenty of places to stop and take in the views.

For a Glimpse of the Otherworldly:

Yellowstone national park, wyoming.

This US national park is one of the most awe-inspiring destinations in America. From hot springs and waterfalls to geysers and wildlife, you can experience many wonders of nature amidst this ancient landscape. Hot springs are a great way to relax and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. While visiting, don’t miss the famous Grand Prismatic Spring. It’s an intricate mosaic of vibrant colors created by various species of heat-loving microscopic organisms living in its waters. Yellowstone is a beautifully bizarre hydrothermal and geologic hodgepodge of mineral structures resembling frozen waterfalls, erupting geysers, and hot spring pools with rainbow rings. If there’s another place on earth that resembles an alien planet more, we’ve yet to encounter it.

The Northern Lights, Fairbanks, Alaska

For supernatural wonders, visit Fairbanks, Alaska, considered the best place to witness the northern lights in the States. It’s no wonder these awe-inspiring curtains of color rippling in waves across the heavens can be found in mythology across many early groups. The ancient Chinese believed Aurora Borealis signified dragons battling in the celestial realm. The Estonians thought the phenomenon indicated sleighs ferrying guests to a heavenly wedding celebration. The Inuit of Hudson Bay in Canada assumed it to be demons with lanterns chasing lost souls. Whereas the Inuit of Northern Greenland believed it meant spirits of the dead were playing games with a walrus skull.

Joshua Tree, California

Joshua Tree, California is a mystical place featuring unique natural beauty and otherworldly experiences. The area is known for its stunning rock formations that resemble something out of a sci-fi movie. Visitors can hike through the Joshua Tree National Park and explore the boulder-strewn landscapes dotted with twisted Joshua trees – an experience like no other. Many people also visit Joshua Tree for stargazing due to the area’s clear skies and minimal light pollution. During the day, visitors can also immerse themselves in the local art scene or participate in mindfulness retreats at one of the many spiritual centers in the area. If you’re looking for a mystical journey that combines natural wonders with transcendental experiences, Joshua Tree is definitely worth adding to your list of mystical places to visit in the United States.

Sedona, Arizona

Sedona, Arizona is a mystical place that has been attracting visitors for many years. The area is known for its stunning red rock formations and peaceful, spiritual energy. Many believe Sedona is home to energy vortexes — special spots where the earth’s energy is heightened. Visitors can go on guided tours to learn about these vortexes and participate in meditation or yoga practices in these sacred areas. Additionally, Sedona also offers beautiful hiking trails and art galleries showcasing local artists. If you’re looking for a serene and spiritual retreat, try one of the healing spas offering treatments such as crystal therapy and reiki .

For Something on the Spookier Side

Savannah, georgia.

Savannah, Georgia is a captivating and historic city shrouded in mystery and intrigue. One of the city’s main draws is its plethora of ghost stories, which have been passed down for generations. Visitors can take guided tours to explore haunted mansions and hear chilling tales about the city’s dark past. But Savannah also offers much more than just spooky legends! It’s home to numerous beautiful parks, fascinating museums, and stunning architecture that will leave you in awe. One must-visit destination in Savannah is Forsyth Park. It is a 30-acre oasis with fountains, walking paths, and plenty of open spaces for picnicking or relaxing. Another popular attraction is River Street. There visitors can stroll along the cobblestone streets lined with shops, restaurants, and art galleries while enjoying breathtaking views of the Savannah River.

New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans is certainly one of the State’s spookier destinations. If you take the Bad Bitches Ghost Tour (by Ghost City Tours) , you’ll learn of the city’s Voodoo Priestess Marie Laveau and the homicidal Madame LaLaurie. Supposedly, the baroque-style LaLaurie mansion with its wrought iron balconies is one of the most haunted buildings in the States. And it’s not the only local spot with ghostly sightings. Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar is said to be frequented by a phantom French-American pirate who used the shop as a cover for his illegal smuggling business.

Skinwalker Ranch, Utah

Located south of Ballard, Utah is the legendary Skinwalker Ranch. Many indigenous tribes and cultures believe the area has powerful supernatural forces at work. It has been home to numerous reported UFO and paranormal sightings over the years. The most famous of these sightings is the Phoenix Lights , which was witnessed by thousands of people in 1997. The lights seen in the sky over Phoenix, Arizona were described as a V-shaped formation of lights that moved slowly across the sky. Other reported sightings include mysterious objects hovering in the air, strange lights in the sky, and even reports of alien abductions. Take the time to explore this mysterious and fascinating place, if you can brave it!

7 Meditation Retreats in the U.S. to Book Now

Design by Emily Blevins

Sometimes, a week on the beach is not enough of an escape from the whirlwind of daily responsibilities and social media notifications. Increasingly, stressed-out travelers are finding respite in meditation retreats—daylong or multiday workshops during which participants engage in meditation and other mindfulness practices.

But you needn’t journey to a mountaintop monastery in Thailand or an ashram in India to deep-breathe your way to tranquility. There are numerous meditation and Zen centers across the United States. Some focus on traditional schools of Buddhist teachings, such as Zen (which originated in China and is influenced by Taoist teachings) and Theravadan (which is the oldest school of Buddhism and practiced widely in Southeast Asia); some are hybrids and incorporate additional religious meditation practices (from Hinduism and Taoism, for example) and other mindfulness practices, including yoga or forest bathing. Many offer silent retreats .

Here, we’ve rounded up some the best meditation retreat centers across the United States, so you can soul-seek without using all your miles.

However, the center also offers integrative weekend and weeklong workshops throughout the year covering a wide range of topics—including dance, yoga, leadership, permaculture, and scientific inquiry.

Guests can opt for a premium room with en suite bathroom and ocean views, book a bunk bed in a dormitory, or reserve space to roll out a sleeping bag in a common area. The more than 100-acre campus includes a farm and gardens, an art studio, bookstore, and a clothing-optional cliffside bathhouse and natural hot springs. Since its founding in 1962, Esalen has attracted famous visitors and residents, such as Henry Miller, Joan Baez, Richard Feynman, and Hunter S. Thompson.

2. Drala Mountain Center

  • Location: Red Feather Lakes, Colorado
  • Visit: https://www.dralamountain.org

The Drala Mountain Center , two hours outside of Denver , is high in the Rocky Mountains and surrounded by pine and aspen forests. It was established in 1971 by Tibetan meditation master Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoch, who also founded the namesake secular meditation practice , which welcomes people from all faiths and backgrounds to seek an enlightened community based on basic goodness.

The Drala Mountain Center holds more than 100 programs per year, including introductions to meditation, deep dives into different practices, and multidisciplinary offerings that incorporate Indigenous wisdom traditions, body awareness practices, contemplative arts, and more. Accommodations vary, too, from well-appointed lodge rooms, to shared dormitories, to tents. The site is also home to the 108-foot-tall Great Stupa of Dharmakaya , one of the largest stupa (Buddhist shrine) in North America; it was built to honor Trungpa Rinpoche when he died.

3. Zen Mountain Monastery

  • Location: Mount Tremper, New York
  • Visit: zmm.org

Set on 250 acres in the Catskills two-and-a-half-hours outside of New York City , the Zen Mountain Monastery teaches Western Zen Buddhism. The modern and distinctly American practice draws on the traditions of Zen Buddhism as they evolved in ancient China and Japan . Curious newbies can join regular meditators in the monastery’s weekly Sunday Morning Program or participate in a weekend retreat.

The center also offers longer programs, from one week to one month to one year, during which residents have the opportunity to learn more about integrating their practice into everyday life. Visitors stay in dorms (for short courses) or private rooms (longer retreats), and the main building, which was built as a Benedictine monastery, is a national and state historic landmark. The Zen Mountain Monastery also has a location in New York City and is currently offering online practice groups .

4. Rolling Meadows

  • Location: Brooks, Maine
  • Visit: rollingmeadowsretreat.com/maine-retreats/

Intimate Rolling Meadows offers a handful of silent meditation and yoga retreats each year at its restored 1840s New England farmhouse. It’s two hours from Portland, Maine , and just seven hours from New York City (and more than worth the travel time). The interdisciplinary approach here combines yoga poses, meditation, and breathwork (which has its roots in yoga, tai chi, and Buddhism) to encourage participants through personal transformation to a higher level of awareness.

Unstructured time is also a cornerstone of these meditation retreats and sets them apart from others. Guests are encouraged to stroll along walking paths and through the flower and organic vegetable gardens of the 100-acre property, relax in the sunroom or library, or unwind in the wood-fired sauna as a valuable part of the experience. Meals are vegetarian and feature produce from those same on-site gardens.

About three hours from Raleigh and two from Asheville , its multidisciplinary offerings include happiness, silent, yoga, and meditation retreats.

One of the center’s biggest draws is its Ayurvedic wellness programs . Ayurveda, a sister science of yoga, approaches wellness based a person’s constitution. This location offers a unique and magical environment for spiritual and tranquility seekers in the mountains. However, we suggest engaging in an online psychic reading free before visiting if you are interested in exploring the supernatural and mysterious aspects of Mount Chasta.

4. Taos, New Mexico

In Taos, New Mexico, you will find a unique combination of Native American and Hispanic cultures, making it an ideal place for spiritual seekers. However, Taos offers plenty, even if you want to admire stunning natural views. This high-desert sanctuary allows you to escape the hectic pace of urban life and revel in the timeless beauty it provides.

For many years, Taos has been a magnet for artists and those with independent personalities, and the reason for this is clear. With its traditional Pueblo buildings and bustling arts community, the town provides a peaceful yet inspiring atmosphere. Furthermore, the presence of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the distance makes it an idyllic place for any spiritually curious traveler.

5. St. Augustine, Florida

Initially, St. Augustine, the oldest city in America, primarily focuses on its historical significance rather than spirituality. However, this assumption is only partially accurate as St. Augustine does have much to offer as a destination for spiritual exploration. While renowned for its Spanish architectural beauty and picturesque beaches, the city possesses a distinct spirituality deeply intertwined with its rich history and enchantment derived from its maritime connections.

Despite lacking prior preparation or guidance, St. Augustine offers a rejuvenating experience for individuals seeking intellectual and spiritual enlightenment.

6. Lily Dale, New York

If you are interested in mediums and spiritualists, ensure Lily Dale is included on your list of places to visit. Lily Dale is a gated community home to certified mediums in upstate New York. During the summer months, the community offers a range of workshops, clairvoyant demonstrations, and healing services. Lily Dale is an excellent choice for a vacation where spirituality is the primary focus.

If you ask a fan of Lily Dale why it is so extraordinary, they will explain that it is a one-of-a-kind place in the United States where the barrier between our world and the afterlife is incredibly slim. Even if you are not new to spiritual journeys, a trip to Lily Dale will enhance your capacity to connect with the mystical realm.

7. Aspen, Colorado

While most people know Aspen’s luxurious ski resorts, only a few are familiar with its potential as a haven for spiritual rejuvenation. The stunning Rocky Mountain landscape serves as the perfect backdrop for various activities that nourish the soul, including hiking and indulging in the tranquility of nature. However, the experience of meditating in this serene environment reaches a whole new level – it should be experienced firsthand.

Additionally, Aspen offers a range of non-religious activities, such as music festivals and art galleries, in addition to its well-known winter sports. Therefore, if you are new to spiritual travel and desire a more diverse vacation experience, Aspen is the perfect destination for you.

spiritual places to visit usa

Top 10 Spiritual Destinations in the U.S.

Make your vacation matter. Sure, every vacation is great. It gives you time to relax and recover from the stresses at work and in your day to day routine, but what if your vacation could do more. What if your vacation could lift you spiritually and help you get back on a healthy path?

The best news is you don’t have to plan an elaborate trip overseas to find an exotic locale. Some incredibly spiritual places can be found right in the United States, maybe in your own backyard.

No matter how you connect spiritually, there’s sure to be a location that will feel meaningful to you or will inspire a new sense of appreciation for others.

1. Monument Valley Tribal Park, Utah and Arizona

Better known as simply Monument Valley , this park is one of the most photographed and visited areas in the country. It was once a lowland basin that evolved through erosion and gradual sediment growth to become a plateau. Today striking buttes jut up above miles of shrubby mesas.

The park lies within the Navajo Nation Reservation, but a large part of it is accessible to all. The exceptions are if you want to see Hunt’s Mesa and Mystery Valley, then you need to schedule a Navajo guided tour.

2. Devil’s Tower, Wyoming

The iconic Devil’s Tower surges upward from the rocky Wyoming landscape, looking like an alien beacon. This unusual looking natural formation is considered sacred to many American Indian Tribes, including the Lakota, Arapahoe, Cheyenne, Shoshone, Crow, and Kiowa. Each tribe has a slightly different creation story for the tower, but all have great respect for this awe-inspiring structure.

Devil's Tower, Wyoming

3. Bighorn Medicine Wheel, Wyoming

Located atop the Bighorn Mountains, the Medicine Wheel or Medicine Mountain National Historic Landmark is the largest and best-preserved medicine wheel in the northern and northwestern Plains. While a lot is known about these medicine wheels, it’s still not clear if they were primarily spiritual or ceremonial.

It’s also not a location definitively ascribed to one tribe, as archeologists have discovered artifacts from different tribes. What is certain is that this medicine wheel had significant spiritual value, and it deserves preservation and respect.

4. El Santuario de Chimayo, New Mexico

In contrast to the large expanse of the Plains, El Santuario de Chimayo is a small shrine that signifies an area known for its healing powers. Even before the shrine was built in 1813, people have flocked to that area to offer prayers.

Initially, the area was revered by Native Americans and Hispanics, but today it has become one of the most important places in the United States for Catholics. Each year during holy week, more than 300,000 pilgrims walk to El Santuario to celebrate Jesus Christ.

While the Catholics have most recently laid claim to this chapel, the region has long been considered spiritual by other groups. This makes it an interesting area in the United States because it has spiritual significance for so many groups.

Linville Gorge, North Carolina

5. Linville Gorge, North Carolina

If you worship the earth, even in the slightest way, then a visit to Linville Gorge should be high on your vacation bucket list. It is one of the most scenic gorges in the Eastern part of the country and often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the East.

Because the gorge is so rough, it has never been logged and boasts majestic trees along with overlooks like Table Rock and Hawksbill.

While a visit to Linville Gorge will bring you a much greater sense of appreciation for nature, it’s also not a hike for the novice.

6. Cahokia Mounts State Historic Site, Illinois

Cahokia was a large city center for Native Americans around 1050-1350 CE. Today, the archaeological site is considered one of the largest and most complex, and it’s one of the 24 UNESCO World Heritage Sites within the United States.

While the site is sacred for many and a very important archeological site, it is open to the public. Entrance is free, but there is a minor suggested donation. Scheduled groups are available for those who wish to learn more.

7. Crater Lake, Oregon

7,700 years ago, a violent volcanic eruption caused the collapse of a tall peak and the creation of Crater Lake . Today, this is the deepest lake in the United States and one of the most pristine on the earth.

The Klamath Indian Tribe views this lake as a place of religious significance. It’s easy to understand the importance they placed on this bountiful and beautiful lake when you see it in person.

 Mount Shasta, California

8. Mount Shasta, California

For thousands of years, the Native American tribes of this region respected the abundant wildlife and natural resources available in this area, specifically at Mount Shasta .

There is a sense of greatness that’s impossible to ignore. Today the region is a haven for outdoor recreation enthusiasts, but there are still secluded wilderness spots for quiet reflection.

9. Badlands National Park, South Dakota

Ravaged by Mother Nature, this region is littered with sharp spires, enormous buttes, deep gorges, and towering pinnacles. While your eyes are drawn heavenward, beneath your feet is one of the world’s most significant fossil beds known as Badlands National Park .

The Native American history from this region is rich with tradition and lore. It’s easy to see why this was such an important region thousands of years ago and today.

10. The Vortexes, Arizona

Sedona, Arizona is so full of majestic grace that it’s easy to see why the whole region has a spiritual vibe. Sedona is home to several vortices, or vortexes , that are swirling centers of energy used for healing, meditation, and exploration.

While the entire area is considered a vortex, there are four noted spotlights: Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, and Boynton Canyon. This part of Arizona has such a reputation as a city of enlightenment that you will\ often see people meditating or performing rituals of spiritual significance.

Sacred Places to Visit in the United States

  • B.A., History, Ohio University

The British Isles and Europe don't have a monopoly on sacred places. There are a number of sites in the United States that are places of magical energy and power. Here are ten amazing places in the U.S. that draw natural energy from the earth .

Bighorn Medicine Wheel, Powell, WY

Patti Wigington

The Bighorn Medicine Wheel isn't easy to get to, but it's been recognized as a place of spiritual power for hundreds of years. Sacred to several Native American groups, the Medicine Wheel is steeped in mystery. The Crow, Lakota Sioux, and Cheyenne peoples all recognize the Medicine Wheel as a place of great power. If you go there, take the time to explore the path around the Wheel -- you'll be surprised at what you may hear!

This site is known as a place where many spiritual seekers end up in their quest. Sedona is perhaps most famous for its spiraling energy vortexes, which draw people in from around the world.

Land's End Labyrinth, San Francisco, CA

High on a rocky mountainside, just a few minutes from San Francisco, there is a labyrinth in a public park. Although it's right in the middle of a large city, there are few people who take the time to hike out to this labyrinth, which sits right above the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. Take some time to check it out, because it's an absolutely magical place.

Update: In August 2015, the Land's End Labyrinth was destroyed by vandals . Caretaker Colleen Yerge told the San Francisco Gate "The labyrinth is there as a sign of peace, love and enlightenment for all. And especially for those that are suffering so much. So even when it is destroyed after I put over 40 hours of carrying rocks and assembling the piece, I still have compassion for whoever did it."

Serpent Mound, Peebles, OH

This mound is the largest known serpent effigy in North America . In some Native American legends, there is a tale of a large serpent who has supernatural powers. Although no one is certain why the Serpent Mound was created, it's possible that it was in homage to the great serpent of legend.

Mt. Shasta, CA

Mt. Shasta, located in northern California, is not only one of the state's most beautiful sites, it also has a reputation for being a place of great magical energy. The Native Americans in the area believe it is the home of the Great Spirit. Today, it is a destination not only for hikers and campers but for people in the metaphysical community seeking to nourish their spirit.

Aztalan State Park, Lake Mills, WI

Aztalan is one of Wisconsin's most notable historical and archaeological sites. It is the home of an ancient Middle-Mississippian village that thrived about a thousand years ago. Like many mound works, this site is believed to contain some interesting spiritual energy. Although the village now called Aztalan has been empty for centuries, scientists did unearth one burial mound there. It contained the remains of a young woman dressed in elaborate seashell jewelry and beads, and some refer to her as "The Princess." Today, some people still leave offerings for the Princess on a special stone.

Ringing Rocks State Park, Upper Black Eddy, PA

Ringing Rocks State Park is exactly what it sounds like - a park full of rocks that you can bang with a hammer. When struck, the rocks emit a ringing sound. The seven-acre field of rocks is open to the public. Although all the rocks at the park are composed of the same material, only about a third of them vibrate and ring when struck. Some visitors claim to have experienced metaphysical events while listening to the vibrations of the rocks.

Mt. Kilauea, Hawai'i Island (Big Island), HI

Mt. Kilauea is known as a sacred place because it is home to Pele, the volcano goddess . Even today, the mountain is a destination for many people who follow ancient Hawaiian religious beliefs.

Mt. Denali, AK

Denali, also known as Mt. McKinley, is the highest peak in North America. The word Denali means "high one" in the language of the local tribes, and the mountain is believed to be the home of many spirits. According to legend, a sun shaman named Sa lives on the mountain, and he is the master of life. Many visitors report seeing strange and unusual things at Denali.

America's Stonehenge, Salem, NH

Our New England travel Guide has some great information on the site known as "America's Stonehenge ." Located in rural New Hampshire, this site has puzzled people for a while. Is it the remainder of some prehistoric society, or simply the work of bored eighteenth-century farmers? Regardless, many people find it a place of great peace and empowerment.

Sacred Sites of the United States

White Sands, New Mexico

Based on current archaeological findings it is certain that human beings have been coming to the Western Hemisphere for at least 40,000 years. There were three methods of travel that were used: 1) In small sea-going craft closely skirting both the Pacific and Atlantic coast lines (from Alaska all the way to the far reaches of southern South America, and from northern Europe all the way to Brazil); 2) By land (over the so-called Bering land bridge and through various ice-free corridors on the enormous ice sheet covering what is now Canada); and 3) Presumably by larger ocean-crossing craft from different locations in Asia, Africa and Europe. Representing an assemblage of different peoples and cultures over more than forty millennia, there would have been a great diversity of shamanic and religious practices wherever people settled. While, generally speaking, it is true that the further back in time we go the less we know about such matters, the following list gives the locations of those places that were considered sacred sites in the region of the United States.

  • Mt. McKinley (Denali)
  • Mt. St. Elias: Sacred mountain of Yakutat Tlingit Indians
  • Mount Graham: Dzil Nchaa Si, Apache sacred mountain
  • Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument
  • I’ito (Montezuma’s Head) & ‘Oks Daha (Old Woman Sitting)
  • Mt. Humphreys: Doko O Sliid, Navaho sacred mountain of the west

10 Most Sacred Sites in the United States

  • Share Content on Facebook
  • Share Content via Email

spiritual places to visit usa

There is a world of variety in what different belief systems find sacred, some have passages of rites, others have sites of worship or holy animals and without a doubt all have a list of defining principles to follow. Great thinkers have struggled with the definition of the truly sacred. But it should be safe to say that in the multicultural melting pot of the United States, there are places of impossible beauty that are undeniably sacred, no matter what your religious background is, these sites will instill a feeling of awe at being in the presence of a higher power. Whether man-made or a natural wonder, they can be considered sacred because of what history has unfolded there or simply the depth of faith their natural beauty displays.

10. Sakya Monastery -Seattle, Washington

Sakya, meaning “grey or pale earth”, is one of four major branches of Buddhism. The monastery was a Presbyterian Church from 1928 until converted in 1975. The name resonates with the original Sakya monastery now in China, built in the 13th century containing some of Tibet’s greatest art works. The saffron robes, beaming Buddhas and the gentle teachings give it an aura of peace. Its devotion to the preservation of Tibetan heritage and culture in the face of the overwhelming power of the Chinese government is striking. The Head Lama has reflected that “the changes in Tibet are an example of the true nature of human existence: all is impermanent, and everything changes” adding to the sense of being in the presence of a heavenly power far beyond anything a mere earthly superpower can muster.

9. Cahokia Mounds -St. Louis, Missouri

Over a millennium ago, Cahokia was a huge settlement cross the river from what is now St. Louis. With an estimated 40,000 people in and around it, it is believed by many to have been the largest city in the world at that time, certainly the biggest in North America before Columbus. The High Priest literally ruled over the center of Mississippian Native culture from Monk’s Mound (so named by Trappist monks centuries later) where the Sacred Fire burned. In shades of England’s Stonehenge Monk’s Mound and the burial site of the Ruler-Priest are aligned by the stars. In fact, a circle of wooden poles nicknamed Woodhenge was used as a solar calendar. There are dozens of mounds once used for ceremonies, burials, sacrifices and with them the tingling feeling that ancient spirits still roam over them.

8. Unity Temple -Chicago, Illinois

The renowned American architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed and built the Temple after the Unitarian Church of which he was a member was struck by lightning and reduced to ashes in 1905. Its replacement, too, appears to be an act of God, like no other church on the face of the earth with a complete absence of anything resembling tradition liturgical shapes and textures. Instead of soaring domes and gold leafed chapels there is a mesmerizing geometric precision. Wright saw it as a “democratic’ religious space for the worship of God and a “meeting place, in which to study man himself for his God’s sake.” Like a late Mozart symphony, it seems like a masterpiece that could only have been achieved with the help of the angels. Modern and unconventional it may be, but it still induces a powerful urge to fall on one’s knees in wonder. It is designated a National Historic Landmark and attracts visitors from around the world.

7. Crater Lake -Medford, Oregon

With a depth of 1,949 feet, Crater Lake is the deepest in the country and Top Ten worldwide. It is an underappreciated scenic gem with one-tenth the four plus million visitors the Grand Canyon gets. The Klamath nation still regards it as a sacred site, created long ago by a terrible battle between the Chiefs of the Above and Below Worlds that completely destroyed the mountain that stood there. Scientists believe that Mount Mazama imploded some 8,000 years ago after a series of cataclysmic eruptions to form a caldera or volcanic depression, which became the lake with an unforgettable shade of blue seen only here. New Age spiritual adherents believe that the lake is a major vortex site and the source of positive energy from the earth’s natural power grid.

6. The Islamic Center -Washington, D.C.

The mosque and cultural center has been ensconced on Embassy Row on Massachusetts Avenue in downtown D.C. since 1957. It was one of the earliest mosques in the country and for a time was the largest in the Western hemisphere. The interior is lush and imposing, recalling the legendary works of the great Ottoman architect Sinan, called the Muslim Michelangelo. In happy historical coincidence, it was in fact built by an Italian architect. There is something about great mosques that are piously humbling but artistically uplifting. It was there that President George W. Bush read the Koran just six days after the terrorist attack of 9/11: “In the long run, evil in the extreme will be the end of those who do evil. For that they rejected the signs of Allah and held them up to ridicule”. As the place the President of the United States reached out to a shaken Muslim community, invoking the words of the Prophet and the souls of the victims, in the name of peace, this must forever be a hallowed, sacred place.

5. Mount Shasta -Mt. Shasta, California

Part of the Cascade Range in northern California, Shasta is central to the Creation story for local Native Americans and remains a sacred place for them. They have lived there for 9,000 years and though their numbers have dwindled shockingly, descendants still conduct ceremonies in its honor. The towering extinct volcano, once an active part of the notorious Pacific Ring of Fire, stands over 14,000 feet. No other mountain on the continent has been ordained by so many groups with mystical significance. As with many Native American sacred sites, its spirituality has been adopted by contemporary belief systems. Buddhists built a monastery there with the belief that it is one of the Seven Sacred Mountains in the World. Many New Agers believe it to be a vortex emitting earth’s subterranean energy. More than a few believe it to be a refueling base for UFO’s. Some of it may seem sacrilegious, but in a way underline the beauty and power of a place whose beauty has been put here by a Creator for a higher purpose.

4. Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary -Baltimore, Maryland

Maryland was founded as a safe haven for Catholics persecuted in England, but the pious Puritans took up the persecution in the New World to the point that in some places Catholics could be sentenced to death. It took 145 years after the Declaration of Independence to build this Cathedral in Baltimore, so when the Basilica opened its doors in 1821, it was a major landmark for the country. It is sublimely warm and welcoming inside. Mother Teresa and Pope John Paul II have blessed it. He called it “the worldwide symbol of religious freedom”. In a sense it can be said that people died for this to be realized and so remains a moving testament to their faith and conviction in the face of intolerance.

3. Devil’s Tower -Crook County, Wyoming

It is as much as 70 million years old. A stunning geological formation, from a volcanic eruption, it has been shaped and scarred by a millennium of erosion. Known in contemporary culture from the film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, some twenty Indian tribes have said to had close and sacred encounters with this natural beauty for thousands of years. It is also known as Bear Lodge and Bear tipi. There are many different legends of how it was created by the Great Spirit Legend. The crevices down its side are said to have been left by a bear sliding down in futility after his erstwhile victims found refuge on top. It was the first site declared a National Monument in 1906 and is still a place for Sun Dances, vision quests and other ceremonial customs. Its commanding presence juts out of the Black Hills looking down on its domain- does it have a supernatural power and in its mystery lies the questions by the grace of whom?

Devil's Tower, Wyoming

2.  Touro Synagogue -Newport, Rhode Island

The English settled Jamestown in 1607 and the Puritans landed famously at Plymouth Rock in 1620. The first Jewish settlers found their way to New York in 1654 and to Newport Rhode Island in 1658, likely fleeing persecution (as their ancestors and descendants have) in the Caribbean. The community thrived and decided it was time for a synagogue in 1759, so they chose Peter Harrison, who was considered the colonies’ greatest architect of the 18th century. Its interior is exquisite like a small English palace. Intensely symbolic, it was built so that people inside face east to Jerusalem and the number 12 is a recurring theme honoring the Twelve Tribes of Israel. It too is a historic site, but moreover it is a symbol of the devotion of a tiny group who lit a torch of hope for their ill-treated people in the New World.

1. Bighorn Medicine Wheel -Bighorn National Forest, Wyoming

They are scarce, with only a hundred or so remaining set in starkly, spectacular, settings. medicine wheel’s are intensely spiritual, places that were made for worship. The Bighorn is the grandfather of all medicine wheels, though its 10,000 foot elevation makes it a daunting destination. Its intricate celestial significance is captivating. It’s a circle with 28 spokes, the number of days in the lunar calendar and a sacred number to many tribes. The spokes point to the rising and setting places of stars near and distant, the Sun at summer solstice, Rigel in Orion, and Sirius, the Dog Star (whose apogee in August gave rise to The Dog Days of summer) in Canis Major. Medicine wheels are the New World’s Stonehenge. Despite their name, they were not used for medical purposes. They should more appropriately be called ‘sacred hoops’ honoring the gods and seeking divine wisdom to guide them in every facet of tribal life.

4 Fascinating Religious Centers in the United States

Dear reader: This article contains links to products and services that I may be compensated for, at no extra cost to you.

When it comes to places to seek religious wisdom, the United States is not typically the first one that comes to mind. Some might think of Jerusalem, with its rich religious heritage and diversity of faiths. Others may think of  India and its multitude of temples and other sacred places dotting the landscape. Yet others may ponder the great monasteries, cathedrals, and great pilgrimage routes of Europe and other famous pilgrimage places around the world .

Even though the United States is not regarded as a particularly “religious” place to visit, there’s no doubt that it is home to a wide range of religiously significant sights, thanks in no small part to the vast kaleidoscopes of faiths represented by its largely immigrant population.

Anyone interested in religious or spiritual sites will find no shortage of possibilities to explore in America. Below I merely scratch the surface and introduce four of the most spiritual places in the US, which you may or may not have even heard of.

Table of Contents

Top Religious Centers in USA

Here are some of the most significant spiritual places in the Unites States, in no particular order.

1. The Bahá’í House of Worship, Illinois

Bahai Temple in Chicago, one of the most important spiritual places in America

Located in Wilmette, Illinois, just 30 minutes north of Chicago, the temple is one-of-a-kind in North America. The temple is one of the eight continental temples of the Bahá’í faith in the world, representing North America, and is the oldest remaining one.

The temple, just like others of its kind, is designed in a circular manner such that it has nine sides. Each side of the temple has a garden with fountains surrounding it. The temple’s striking appearance is indeed is best feature. Although built with quartz and cement, the temple’s walls look like white lace.

The temple opens from six in the morning till ten at night. The doors are open to everyone, irrespective of their faith, and it is free.

2. Fo Guang Shan Hsi Lai Temple, California

Hsi Lai Temple, one of the most spiritual sights in the US

Of the countless things to do in California , the spiritually inclined should consider paying a visit to Hsi Lai Temple in northern Puente Hills, Hacienda Heights, Los Angeles County.

Modeled after ancient Chinese designs, this Buddhist temple looks like it is straight out of the East. When viewed from above, the building is shaped like a bodhi leaf, that is, a leaf from the tree where Buddha attained enlightenment. The temple belongs to the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Order , which is headquartered in Taiwan .

The temple is adorned with gold and protective figures on its roof. At the center of the temple, you will find a peaceful courtyard. The temple also features houses important pieces of art from both Asia and America.

The temple opens for visits from 9 in the morning till 5 pm every day of the week, and is free to enter. The temple also offers tours during the weekends. For those interested in sampling a Buddhist vegan buffet, they can dig in by making a small donation of 7 USD.

3. Islamic Center of America, Michigan

Islamic Center of America, Michigan, one of the most important sacred places in the US

Located in Dearborn, Michigan, the inspiration for this striking Islamic place of woship is the ancient mosque designs of India, Turkey, and some other Muslim countries.

On the outside, the edifice is made of stone with a dome made from fiberglass. On the inside, you will be greeted with prayer rooms with passages from the Quran gracing their walls and Islamic motifs, all designed by an artist from Lebanon.

The center sits on a 65,000 square-foot area, and it’s a place of worship for over 5000 Muslims, catering to one of the largest Arab/Muslim communities in the United States.

The facility opens for visitors from 9 in the morning till 11 in the evening. Although tours are free, you have to sign up on their website.

4. Memorial Presbyterian Church, Florida

Memorial Presbyterian Church in Florida, one of the most important spiritual places in the United States

This immaculate church, located in St. Augustine, Florida, is a real beauty to behold. Just like the proverbial saying that there’s more to a person than just beauty, the real treat in this building is not the beauty it presents to eyes. Instead, it’s the beautiful story it has to tell. It also doesn’t hurt that the church happens to be located in one of the best vacation spots on the east coast !

The building is dedicated to the memories of Jenny Louise Benedict, who died from complications during childbirth in 1889. Her father, Morrison Flagler, built the church. The tycoon, alongside her daughter, Marjorie, and her mother, Mary, are all buried inside the church.

European churches such as the Basilica St. Mark in Venice inspired the design of the church. The walls are made of carved wood, while the windows are of stained glass. The building also has a beautiful sanctuary and a gigantic dome that draws visitors to tilt their heads toward Heaven.

USA Travel Essentials for Visitors

Before traveling to the United States, you need the following documents: an international passport, the appropriate visa or Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA); click here for more information on getting an ESTA.

Read on for more detailed information on the documents you will need for your journey.

1. International Passport

This is a general requirement for people traveling to the United States. You are required to have a valid international passport for travel to the United States. At the time of application for a travel visa, your passport should have an extended validity of not less than six months.

You may be required to obtain a travel visa to visit the US. As a tourist coming to the United States for pleasure, you should get a B1 permit. The B1 visa goes to people moving to the United States temporarily for pleasure or business reasons. However, not everyone needs a visa to travel to the United States.

According to the United States Visa Waiver Program, citizens of 39 countries, including the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, are allowed into the United States without needing a visa. As against getting obtaining visas, citizens of this country obtain Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).  The ESTA, which has a validity period of 2 years, grants its holder entry into the US. Before you plan your trip, you must find out if you are a citizen of these 39 countries.

The spiritual landscape of the United States is as varied as its people. Hopefully this article has inspired you to consider the US as a spiritual destination among many. Take you pick of spiritual places to see in the US, make sure to arrange the appropriate documents for your visit, and start planning your trip!

This is a wonderful topic. Yes, often times most of us do not think about exotic spiritual destinations in the United States; we don’t seem old enough to have that kind of history. Thank you for sharing this and when I am traveling south to Southern California I’m will have to make a stop at HSI Lai Temple. Thank you for the information.

I totally agree, and thanks for reading!

Love this site really helps me daily

Hi Nice article with excellent images.

May I make a suggestion … in today’s complicated world of terminology, many see a significant difference in the terms ‘religious’ and ‘spiritual’ although many like to use those terms interchangeably.

I’m not suggestion a right or wrong mentality here, just difference. For the sake of clarity and truth in drawing interested people to your work, it would have been more appropriate to call your article Religious Centers you can’t miss.

I expected to see wondrous places of spiritual vortexes and org’s that bring people together in that kind of philosophy. While these are interesting places of culture and religion, they aren’t really ‘spiritual’ destinations as modern terms go … unless you don’t get the difference.

Thanks for your consideration. ☯️

Thanks for your feedback, and I agree. I’ll do an overhaul on this article when I get the chance!

Joshua Tree CA

We all have those moments in life when we find ourselves daydreaming about ditching our normal routine, hopping on a plane and starting a new life in a transcendental meditation commune on a faraway continent.

(That’s not just me, right?)

If you’re in need of a spiritual retreat but don’t have the budget or PTO for globe-trekking, we’ve got some good news: there are plenty of places in the U.S. that are hotbeds of spiritual enlightenment, rejuvenation and education – no passport required.

Where to Live Now

Looking for a fresh start here’s where to move..

Whether you’re looking for a career change, a lifestyle change or just a change of scenery, these cities will give you the jumpstart you need.

Joshua Tree, California

You can’t go wrong with a quirky desert town like Joshua Tree . This tiny community alongside Joshua Tree National Park attracts young artists, hikers passing through and, of course, locals who march to the beat of their own drum.

If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind desert adventure, you can check into the Pioneertown Motel , a former live-in Western movie set built in the 1940s to house celebrities. At Pioneertown, it’s all about R&R in the crisp desert air, highlighted by some of the starriest night skies you’ve ever seen. Sedona’s mystical properties have made the city a hub for all things related to spirituality, wellness and New Age practices.
