Star Trek Online Unparalleled update launches May 28 on PC and June on console

Developer Cryptic Studios announced the release date for "Unparalleled," the latest update for its ongoing free-to-play MMORPG, Star Trek: Online . The Unparalleled update, also known as "Season 32," will further expand the game's story campaign, which has continued since the game's original launch in 2010. Cryptic commemorated Star Trek Online 's 14th anniversary in January 2024.

Unparalleled will continue the current story arc of Star Trek Online , which involves the Federation and its allies fighting back against a series of multiversal incursions. Factions from alternative universes are crossing into the "prime" Star Trek timeline, particularly a new "Borg Kingdom." The Unparalleled update will feature Star Trek alumnus Denise Crosby, who played the characters Tasha Yar and Sela in the Star Trek: The Next Generation TV series. Crosby has appeared in Star Trek Online before, first reprising her role as Tasha Yar for a mission based on the Next Generation episode "Yesterday's Enterprise," and then as Empress Sela of the Romulan Star Empire, playing a major role in the game's storyline.

This time Crosby returns as Sela, but from a parallel universe where she became a 25th-century Starfleet officer. Players will join Sela and visit her universe to intervene in a conflict between the Borg and a peaceful version of the Iconians, who served as primary antagonists for much of Star Trek Online 's main story arc.

Besides the story expansion, Star Trek Online: Unparalleled will also see the addition of a new team-based Task Force Operation activity called "Borg Battle Royale." The Borg Battle Royale is a wave-based survival activity where teams of players will fight hordes of Borg foes in waves of escalating difficulty.

The debut of Season 32 will be accompanied by a limited-time event that will reward players for regularly participating in activities for the duration. During the event, they'll be able to earn unique prizes, like a Dimensional Hypermass Torpedo Launcher weapon, a Type 14 Shuttle Support Squadron gear piece, and two particularly valuable prizes: 500 Lobi Crystals, and an Epic-grade Phoenix Prize token.

Lobi Crystals are a form of currency that typically is only rewarded when players open one of Star Trek Online 's microtransaction-based lock box reward packs. The crystals can be collected and exchanged for uniquely powerful gear pieces in an in-game store. Meanwhile, Phoenix Prize tokens are extremely rare drops from the Phoenix Prize Pack, a type of lock box that can be opened in exchange for the free Dilithium currency instead of a microtransaction. Epic-grade Phoenix Prize tokens can be redeemed for playable starships, as well.

Star Trek Online: Unparalleled launches on May 28, 2024 on PC, and in June 2024 on PS4 and Xbox One.

The series side of Star Trek could learn a thing or two from Star Trek: Online

F ans shouldn’t be sleeping on Star Trek: Online, the popular massive multiple-player online role-playing experience. It’s a video game that has been going strong since 2010 and 14 years later, is still giving fans all sorts of amazing experiences. 

The game has been a bridge to most of Star Trek’s fanbase for years and has helped satisfy the itch of legacy characters in the franchise getting another crack at their famed roles. People like Tim Russ (Tuvok), Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine), Walter Koening (Pavel Checkov), Alexander Siddig (Julian Bashir), Jeffrey Combs (various), Kate Mulgrew (Kathrine Janeway), Chase Masterson (Leeta) and many others have returned to the franchise to reprise their famed characters.

Now, it’s happening again as Denise Crosby is returning to the franchise to play a different version of Sela, now the captain of the USS Enterprise. 

It’s a novel concept and one that will surely get fans interested in the latest update for the game, and also an example of how this nearly 15-year-old game is still able to generate some of the more interesting plotlines that the franchise has seen since the end of Enterprise. 

While the Kelvin Timeline films have their fans, the most recent crop of Star Trek shows have been largely hit or miss for the fandom, with Strange New Worlds arguably being the best of the bunch. A major reason why the shows seem to disinterest such a wide variety of fans has to do with the fact that most of the shows are being written by people who don’t truly understand the franchise and instead want to see themselves as a character in the show first and foremost.

It’s not a bad thing, but when writing a stand-in character is the point of the show and not the complex politics of an ever-changing intergalactic theatre, then you’ve lost the point of the show. Star Trek is about the conflicts, not setting up scenarios just to make one character look like a superhero.

It's why so many shows have failed because the focus is on a singular character, usually not on a larger plot. Not only that, but when the shows do focus on a wider crop of characters, the storylines are often simple and dare we say vapid. Yet, Star Trek Online is able to avoid a lot of this by going off-book more often than not.

It's why it's lasted 14-plus years, and why the shows and films should turn to it and its creative team for direction.

‘Star Trek Online: Unraveled’ Launches Next Week With New Multiverse Story

After concluding the Mirror Universe arc earlier this year, Star Trek Online is set to begin a new multiverse story arc.

Gearbox Publishing and Cryptic Studios just announced Star Trek Online: Unraveled , the latest season of the long-running MMO launching May 9, 2023 for PC.

Here is a quick summary of the new story:

Following events from the conclusion of the Mirror Universe story arc, “Terran Gambit”, your Captain will embark on a humanitarian scientific mission with Captain Kuumaarke (voiced by Kipleigh Brown) to stabilize the Na’kuhl sun. However, this mission is interrupted by a discovery; a transdimentional Reality Vortex is disrupting space-time throughout the Multiverse. A conflict ensues with the Tholians, who reveal that constant use of time and dimensional travel has caused these vortices – and your Captain is partly to blame.

They also released a new announcement trailer prominently featuring the USS Enterprise-F. The ship recently seen in season 3 of Star Trek: Picard was based on a design from Star Trek Online.

UPDATE about the Enterprise F trailer. Gearbox has sent us the following note:

Correction: We wanted to feature the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-F) as a celebration of the ship that was introduced in Star Trek Online, and also announce Star Trek Online’s new season, Unraveled . The ship is currently in the game, however, players can look forward to an updated model of the ship next month. More details will be revealed soon! We apologize for any confusion.

Star Trek Online Unraveled includes the following content:

• New Episode – Wish Upon a Star: While on a scientific humanitarian mission with Captain Kuumaarke, your Captain will discover a group of Tholians interacting with a Reality Vortex. Their intentions and goals are unknown.
• New Task Force Operation – Leviathan:  A five-player space Task Force Operation simulating a Trench Run exercise across “The Other” in a “What if?” scenario if the “Terran Gambit” arc had ended differently.
• Two new Patrols: Jupiter Gauntlet and Bringers of War, based off of the “Terran Gambit” story arc. New Hard Mode is included as well for an extra challenge.
• Lockbox and Lobi Store Items: Strange New World items and the T6 Gorn Hunter Pilot Raider have been added to the Infinity Lockbox. Starfleet and Majalan items from Season 1 of Strange New World have been added to the Lobi Crystal Consortium.

Overdesigned and ugly

I mostly agree. I don’t dislike the overall shape, but it does look like overstretched toffee. I don’t understand this 2-color scheme started with the Enterprise-E. A ship’s hull should be white, like the refit enterprise of TMP. I don’t like the stern of the ship, where the captain’s yacht docks. Just too much going on there. I think overdesigned is the perfect word.

I agree on the color scheme. Popular video games like Mass Effect have ship designers incorporating more random color paneling. That’s great for those franchises, but I like my starships looking like starships.

For a 24th century flagship looks good. But why not bring in Captain Shelby and give us some of her adventures? Also cool… that the 24th century ships give out to ships based on 23rd century designs like the neo-Connies from back when space was really wild. The Ent-G is pretty much what the Ent-A or B (and TNG) should have been from the start!

I liked the ships from TNG, DS9, and Voyager. Liked Roddenberry wanting to move on and get a different aesthetic.

Don’t play the game, but I’ve seen some cut footage and the bridge for this class of ship is evidently gigantic — something akin the Andy Probert’s early ideas about what the bridge of the D might look like, until he faced up to the fact that there just wasn’t the room onstage for it.

Unfortunately the bridge Shelby was on didn’t amount to much, visually. I understand that money was at a premium, but given that her scene was mostly seen on the Titan main viewer anyway, a virtual set might have been better.

Shelby wasn’t the long-term captain of the E-F. The tie-in videos from the beginning of the season established the F had multiple captains during her lifetime. Shelby was just in command for her decommissioning.

I like to think she got a couple awesome adventures in. The character deserved it.

“ why not bring in Captain Shelby and give us some of her adventures” – or, here’s a wild concept… how about a BRAND NEW character? Wouldn’t that be a funny concept for new Trek.

In the game Star Trek Online an Andorian character was Captain of the Enterprise. The show kind of f’d up the games chronology.

What a weirdly ugly ship design.

Terrible music. Terrible voiceover. Step it up people, this is the Enterprise.

Look, I think it’s great the Enterprise-F and many Star Trek Online ships made it onto TV, but some of the freak out I’ve seen on Twitter about the F’s brief cameo from the STO community is just ridiculous. The ship was acknowledged, and it’s officially part of the Enterprise lineage in official, on-screen canon. That is a win. Getting upset that there will be no continuing voyages of that ship is pointless now that they’ve moved on. Accept it.

Interesting interview. You can see the enthusiasm with Al for Star Trek and the game. Sadly though, there is more to this story than this interview describes.  Star Trek Online has some serious problems around content release and quality control. It seems the people who write the game don’t play the game they developed, and who, having finished the coding, abandon every system within it for all time due to no obvious monetization options, disinterest and a moribund imagination. Obvious examples are the DOFFING system the Admiralty System, the Fleet System (although there have been some minor updates here, half of which still don’t work).  The quality control in the game is appalling. There are bugs which go back 10 years and brand new bugs after almost every patch. An obvious one you can see right now if you login is 80% of the player ships are called InvalidEntityName rather than USS whatever.  Disconnections are rife amongst players from all over the world, you can have two accounts running on the same PC going into the same event and one of them will disconnect, the Devs themselves get disconnected from their own game during live streams. Only a month ago the entire login system failed so nobody was able to login to the game for 3 days. Their blogs are full of inaccuracies and typos, the livestreams are very unprofessional and get interrupted by phone calls and cats! Even the Premiere of their new season announcement yesterday at 2pm was delayed by 45 minutes, 500 people were waiting to watch it and nothing happened. It’s sloppy, very sloppy.  Content releases are very few and far between. The stories, when we do get them, are very well made (assuming they work, they are often bugged on release), however, their last arc of 6 episodes took them 16 months to release fully, that’s about 6 hours of content in 16 months. Most of what they add to the game are ships from the Star Trek shows, most of which are locked behind a gambling paywall deep inside a lock box.  Star Trek Online is kept alive by players who are thoroughly devoted to the ideals and lore of Star Trek, much to the surprise of the developers who find they can continue to maximise profit and minimise effort, occasionally adding a small nugget of content whilst continually pushing sales of their ships and promoting gambling mechanics with insanely low odds of winning.  Such is the love for the genre that players will continue to throw money at the game for the chance to captain their favourite starship whilst negotiating the myriad bugs and disconnections the game presents on a daily basis.  STO continues because it has a type of plot armour and because fans unreasonably expect the developers to do what they haven’t done year after year. As Albert Einstein said, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, so it seems therefore that all the fans of Star Trek Online are a little bit insane or at least not paying attention. The game will continue as long as there are Star Trek fans, but it will always be a subpar experience for the most part and a low tier MMO. For it to really shine and for the masses of missed opportunities to be realised will require serious investment. This is something fans of the game were hoping for when they were bought out last year by Gearbox/Embracer, sadly things have only deteriorated on the quality front since then and it seems clear that they were bought out as a profitable going concern, Gearbox skims off the profits and throw scraps back to the devs to keep the lights on.  I am certain that Al, Thomas, Jonathan and many of the other devs would love to improve the game in a thousand different ways but their hands are seemingly tied and I don’t see anything changing. They will continue to do little for player retention whilst attracting new whales and gambling addicts to their game to buy the latest gamble box ship, whilst the devoted fans are left kicking their heels with little to do. I run many fleets in the game and have over 30,000 hours of playtime, retaining players is our number one difficulty, even those who come onboard and spend a shed load of cash on the game often disappear within a month or two after they’ve finished the 60 hours of content the game has to offer.  Star Trek Online is the best and worst Star Trek MMO because it’s the only Star Trek MMO, if another Star Trek MMO is released tomorrow and includes really good content, is a relatively bug-free experience and includes things that STO doesn’t …  Read more »

I play Star Trek Fleet Command. It’s on PC now after starting as a mobile game. Yes it has some of the same problems, I’m level 26 and have to reload the game every so often when I get reset to level 1 for example, and the prices you have to pay for some of the characters is ridiculous but there’s new content monthly and they work on most of the bugs.

Created by the Federation in response to a changing galaxy, the Excelsior II employs a number of technologies and strategies normally left to the shadows of the intelligence services. While not itself a spy vessel in the strictest sense, the fusion of information technology and combat readiness with a well-rounded and durable hull, combined with a bit of extra engine power to keep the platform flexible, has culminated in a formidable vessel.

The Excelsior II -class Intel Heavy Cruiser has a built-in Transwarp drive that allows it to transwarp to two locations in the Alpha Quadrant and eight locations in the Beta Quadrant :

Active Sensor Arrays

As an Intelligence starship, the Excelsior II Intel Heavy Cruiser is capable of deploying an Intel sensor drone with the Gather Intelligence ability.

While the target is Vulnerable , one of three Expose Vulnerability abilities can be used. These powerful abilities find a critical weakness in the targeted foe and allow players to briefly exploit it.

Intelligence vessels also have a built-in passive ability which renders them undetectable at long range.

The Excelsior II -class Intel Heavy Cruiser has a cloak that allows the ship to cloak when not in combat, granting stealth and a damage bonus upon decloaking.

Command the Dauntless II!

The Dauntless II Command Science Destroyer - from Star Trek Prodigy - is joining the Infinity Lock Box on October 12th ! The original Dauntless was a copy of a fraud – an alien race created a false Federation starship to lure the captain and crew of the U.S.S. Voyager. While partially successful, this effort caught the eye of Starfleet Engineering once the Voyager completed its historic return to Federation space, and the advanced slipstream mechanism aboard provided the foundation for the Dauntless. The Dauntless II, on the other hand, is re-imagined as a true Federation starship molded by the experiences of Voyager’s Captain Kathryn Janeway. It retains the advanced quantum slipstream drive and scientific nature, and adds to it an absolute premium on the survival of the crew. Its prototype asymmetric shielding technology allows unprecedented integrity of the forward shields, and that defense is bolstered by an ability to surge Torpedoes onto the battlefield in a spectacular, if not sustainable, way. This deterrence stops fights before they start -- each enemy captain knows their ship cannot hope to pierce the Dauntless II’s shields before the beautiful display of formation flying Torpedoes finds a hole in theirs.

Console - Universal – J.D.M.A. Launch Cells

Activating this Joint Directed Munition Attack console releases a wave of simplified Torpedoes with warheads armed by admixtures of Exotic Particles too unstable for long-term storage. They arc toward the target, overwhelming their defenses with a large number of smaller impacts that more efficiently deliver force into the Foe's hull. The Kinetic Damage dealt by this attack is modified by Aux Power and either Projectile Weapon Skill or Exotic Particle Generation, whichever is greater. It counts as both an Exotic and a Projectile attack.

Inspired by Captain Janeway's frequent need to clarify an ambiguous battlefield with a show of force, this ship modification contains a huge number of quasi-guided small torpedoes. Stored in simple racks of tubes behind explosive-bolt bulkheads, they cannot be quickly reloaded and are more size constrained, but they can be fired in far more rapid succession than traditional torpedoes. The resulting explosions are sufficient to damage both the target and nearby enemy vessels, especially those caught in artificial gravity wells. As those who have faced her know, Janeway doesn't mess around.

In addition to its active abilities, this console provides a passive bonus to Maximum Auxiliary Power, Projectile Weapons Training, and Exotic Particle Generation. 

Starship Trait – Vanguard Shield Shaping

After achieving level 5 in your Dauntless II Command Science Dreadnought, you will unlock the Vanguard Shield Shaping starship trait. While this trait is slotted, activating a Bridge Officer Torpedo Firing Mode or Exotic Damage Ability grants bonus Kinetic Damage and Forward Shield Facing. In each case, the mechanism is the same: particle projectors are used to bias the Shield forward, creating an overcharged region of the field.

Torpedoes passing through this region receive knock-on benefits as the excess shield energy is shunted into their warheads. This is very bad for the longevity of the warhead, but since torpedoes fired in combat tend not to spend much time in storage, the tradeoff is acceptable.
