My wife and I booked on what we hoped would be a quality Agatha Christie tour, it was absolutely appalling. No welcome when we got to the hotel. The meal on the first evening was very slow with very poor service and no menu choice, My wife asked for another piece of bread with her soup which never arrived, 45 minutes between courses, when the desserts arrived two guests didn't get anything until the staff were chased up, coffee was only served to half of us until we chased the staff up again. We were so discusted we went home early the following morning. We'll certainly never go with them again.

Mackintosh venues with fantastic tour guides!

The tour guides,Robin and Karen Cairns made this trip memorable! They both were so enthusiastic and brought the whole Mackintosh experience alive with their knowledge and Robin's jokes and comical tales. The venues were fantastic and we were able to have lunch in the first ever buiding designed by Mackintosh in Helensburgh, as well as the beautiful Hill House.

Breaking the Law

I would like to echo the remarks made by other recent reviews. This company has broken the law, its contractual obligations, and its word, by refusing to make refunds for cancelled tours until March 2021. It is therefore not to be trusted. I am hoping that the recent ruling against TUI will make them change their minds but I doubt it.

Dear Mr While I have not heard from you directly, but I note your comments. |The scale of this issue has meant that we have had to take decisions to safeguard our future. The refund credit notes have the backing of ABTA, ATOL and the government, and we are asking clients to accept these in the light of the scale of the issues that we, as a small company, are facing in the light of having to cancel hundreds of tours. Most people appreciate this and have been supporting us, a minority not wishing to assist in this regard. In these instances, we have honoured our contractual obligations and refunded. In this instance, it is a deposit of £75 per person so hardly a massive blow to our cashflow. if you would like o write to me personally and privately, i will deal with the matter in person. We are a long-established (26 years) specialist tour operator with an excellent reputation. To castigate us in the midst of this crisis as "not to be trusted" is not very fair. Ed Coventry Managing Director

There are two travel editions

There are two travel editions, the one in London is the legitimate company, the online travel editions, are scammers, don't fall for it. They adopted travel editions, because they know people have an idea about the legitimacy of travel editions in London. I paid £400, to them. I got to know they are fraudsters, I requested for refund, they blocked me. Please anyone affected should report to national fraud prevention. These people must be stopped.

Travel Editions / Mr Ed Coventry

Travel Editions / Mr Ed Coventry has not done himself any favours by expecting his Clients to fund his business by refusing to refund or carry forward etc monies on holidays due to Covid 19. He has failed to support his Clients at this worrying time BUT expects his Clients to support him! Any business no matter how big or small knows that if you don’t look after your Clients, they will go elsewhere. You are not doing yourself any favours Mr Coventry by your mishandling of a situation that other travel companies have dealt with in the correct and honourable manner. FIRST RULE OF BUSINESS,NO CLIENTS, NO BUSINESS. TAKE NOTE MR COVENTRY! LOOK AFTER YOUR CLIENTS OR THEY WONT LOOK AFTER YOU.

Dear Mrs Thompson I have not had any correspondence with you so i am not sure what this is regarding. We have been carrying forward payments and deposits to future tours for many hundreds of customers during this terrible pandemic. If you write to me directly at [email protected] I will look into your issue and respond personally and privately. We greatly value our loyal clients and do our utmost to look after them as well as possible. But in this instance i have no idea of what we are supposed to have done wrong. Kind regards Ed Coventry Managing Director

Claim your refund via your credit card

I never did hear from Travel Editions. My mother eventually took up the issue with her credit card company. They refunded her the money in full that was owed to her. If you are chasing a refund with Travel Editions because of cancelled trip due to the Covid pandemic, please take the matter up with your credit card provider. You are legally entitled to a refund. Please do not be put off by what Travel Editions tell you. The law is on your side and the UK Government Competition and Market Authority (CMA) have made that explicit and clear.

One to avoid

I agree with others: this company is too bad for even one star. In particular, the Managing Director, Ed Coventry, does not take legitimate complaints and negative comments well or even accept that they might be justified and worth investigating. If you want to be herded around in a large group with a "Tour Manager" who can barely bother to speak to you and then have any negative comments ignored then good luck with that. Very inefficient (eg we were going to a show but were sent last year's programme which was quite different to this year's). Fortunately, there are so many other companies out there who do a much better job. This is one to avoid.

I have just returned from 3 day trip to…

I have just returned from 3 day trip to Turin/Milan with Travel Editions. What an unfortunate experience. The tour was hardly 'managed' at all. The proposed itinerary was not adhered to and the whole experience was not enjoyable. I will not travel with this company again and would not recommend them. A very expensive trip which did not deliver. Avoid them.

Dear Ms Michaelis we have written to all members of the group with an apology, compensation and an offer of a discount on a future holiday which i hope you found accetable. This tour was not up to our usual standard and i am sorry for any disappointment caused. Ed Coventry Managing Director

A Secret War Tour Beyond Outstanding!

I have been on many, many, battlefield tours over the years but this Secret War Tour with Travel Editions was truly outstanding. Well ahead of the rest and then some. I thought I knew what to expect but my expectations were greatly exceeded. Why? Because everything about it reeked of quality. We stayed in a superb hotel half board, had a comfortable coach with a superb driver, thank you Oskar! And the tour guide was superb, warm, friendly and highly professional (am I allowed to mention your name, Yvonne?) The guest speakers were the very best available, bar none, and the locations visited left one with a feeling of awe and wonderment. They just could not have been better. So much was packed into the programme that it took me four days to recover! This was a Secret War Tour beyond expectations and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Thank you Travel Editions!

Dear Mr O'Connell Thanks for the effusive review.....it is much appreciated and I am so pleased that you enjoyed the tour so much. Kind regards, Ed Coventry Managing Director

One star is too good for this company!

One star is too good for this company! They are just thieves and know what they are doing! I paid a deposit of £100 for a flight but the information which I was then supplied with made me wonder whether it was a legitimate company, I found out too late that my thoughts were correct. I also got a form to fill out for a refund which states on it that it would take 8 to 10 days to process, they have came and went and, my calls have stopped being answered and emails failing to be delivered. Do not get this company mixed up with the correct one, 01274066474 or 01274066476 are the company to stay away from.

Date of experience : April 04, 2019

Travel Editions have nothing whatever to do with this booking - it is a company with a similar website posing as a legitimate company. We have reported the activity to ABTA but it is NOT Travel Editions. We are a highly reputable tour operator based in London

Excellent Tour

I travelled with the real Travel Editions to the Netherlands on their Art Tour. It was excellent, exactly as in the brochure and the Utrecht hotel was a good 4 star establishment with comfortable rooms. The tour lived up to expectations.

Refused to refund after they cancelled

Travel Editions cancelled our booking. I requested a refund, pointing out this was my entitlement in law. Firm replied, acknowledging the legal position but refusing point blank to refund me. Appalling attitude to customers. Bad experience. Will not be booking with them again. AVOID

Date of experience : June 15, 2020

I do not know which tour this is as no information advised along with most other tour operators we are requesting that cancelled clients accept a refund credit note which is refundable no later than 31st March 2021, so we are not refusing to refund, but asking to delay as the crisis evolves. if the client would like to write to me directly i will reply in person to explain our policy mroe fully kind regards Ed Coventry Managing Director

Lake Annecy Christmas tour 2019

I travelled with this company on their Christmas tour 2019 to Lake Annecy. I would highly recommend this tour. Hotel was superb, the staff couldnt do enough for you and food was to die for. Daily coach trips were very good and the tour guide, Steve, was very helpful and full of advice.

Very unreasonable company to deal with -- not recommended

I am 71 years old and diabetic, and thus in the highest-risk group for COVID-19. I booked a New Scientist tour to Bologna and Florence scheduled to depart on March 3 through Travel Editions in January and paid in full at that time. By February 27, both the WHO and the US CDC had strongly advised against any but essential travel to Italy, but Travel Editions still planned the trip, saying "...at the moment the tour is still scheduled to go ahead as the FCO have not advised against travel to Italy..." (direct quote from 2/27 email from Nadine Mascoll, Reservations Manager). In my opinion, this was a very ill-advised decision, flying in the face of both international and US public health authorities. The upshot was that Travel Editions would not even discuss any sort of accommodation (such as credit towards the November departure of the same tour), claiming that they had "... paid our suppliers for this tour ..." (direct quote from 2/27 email from Nadine Mascoll, Reservations Manager), resulting in my having to forfeit the entire nearly $3,000 cost of the tour. I would strongly advise against doing business with a company that clearly places its own financial interests over the well-being of its customers.

Date of experience : March 13, 2020

Dear Mr Bieber Thank you for the email and I am terribly sorry that we could not be more helpful in this regard. We had prepaid all services for this tour and – at that time – the FCO advice in the UK was that Bologna and Florence were open for overseas visitors. And the Italian government were urging tourists not to abandon trips to the country. In fact, we did operate the tour accordingly with few problems. Clearly, this crisis is unprecedented in recent times with advice changing hourly and varying wildly from country to country. So we can only set our booking policies according to information that we have at the time. And Nadine obviously advised you accordingly. I can only apologise that we were obliged to impose these conditions and stand by our booking conditions, but these are very trying circumstances that we are attempting to navigate. I do hope that this explains our position clearly.

Very disappointing and an arrogant response

Travel Editions (traveleditions.co.uk) is a travel company targeting the 50+ retired traveller. We went on the Loire Valley trip, and the package includes Eurostar/TGV travel (second class!!) hotel accommodation and coach excursions to Chateaus and a couple of wineries. The train travel was ridiculously convoluted. I would have paid more for a more direct route. Neither were we made aware that we'd have to get our cases UPSTAIRS ON OUR OWN on a crowded TGV both ways, and many of our party were elderly with arthritis issues. One passenger was clearly unfit for the holiday and had B.O and should have been refused travel and refunded - he spoiled the holiday for everyone else. The hotel room was substandard and I'd have paid more for a better one - we were certainly not made aware we'd be given rooms where only ONE HALF of the wardrobe was actually a wardrobe, and the other half was just a solid ornamental mirror, and that the second winery we visited was an amateurish outfit not really geared up for UK tourists. The tour manager was helpful but no expert on the Loire and rambled and waffled. On being invited to give feedback and pointing all this out, the guy running the business, Ed Coventry, just got defensive and pointed out that everything was as delivered, and the negative aspects of the trip were just tough - no compensation or goodwill gesture was offered. I will never use them again.

Date of experience : July 20, 2018

i am very sorry that this experience was not as good as anticipated. I did not mean to appear arrogant or defensive but was pointing out the difficulties of vetting a client's walking issues. We do advertise clearly the walking requirements on our tours and in this instance, a gentleman was clearly not able to participate properly in the tour. Our tour manager hired a wheelchair for him and assisted him as much as possible, but it was clearly not entirely a satisfactory outcome. Gary's suggestion that we should have refused him travel is very difficult to implement once he has joined the tour. However, we have now blacklisted him for future travel. With regard to the train travel, i merely stated that the train arrangements were delivered as advertised - it wasnt being defensive, just factual. I repeat my apologies for any shortcomings with regard to the hotel. i have subsequently offered Gary a discount on a future tour, which i hope he is able to take up where i can assure him of a better experience.

Extremely disappointed with this…

Extremely disappointed with this Company attitude regarding refunds, They refused point blank to reimburse my deposit after cancelling my trip, I pointed out they were breaking the law but it seems they don't have to comply with this. I approached my Credit card company and asked if I could have a refund, happily this took Six weeks for the monies to be refunded into my account. I would advise anyone who has been refused a refund to go down this route and stop this Company using customer money to fund its business.

Date of experience : August 25, 2020

Dear Mr Dawe i am sorry that you did not feel that we handled your enquiry correctly. The scale of the virus has meant the cancellation of thousands of holidays so we have been offering refund credit notes, with the backing of ABTA and ATOL, which are refundable in due course whilst we assess the scale and longevity of the crisis. We did not refuse to reimburse your deposit, we asked that you accept a reund credit note with the prospect of it being reimbursed in due course. I am sorry that this was not to your satisfaction but i am pleased that you got the refund as you wanted in due course.

Interesting to note that there is only…

Interesting to note that there is only one other review for this company (1 star) but the company is listed with a three-star rating. I just returned from a very expensive holiday organised by this company. I paid the premium for a special, arts-interest tour, on the basis of a detailed, interesting itinerary and the services of an expert guide. The itinerary was substantially ignored and while our guide may have been an expert, his English was minimal and incomprehensible. On the basis of this experience, I would not recommend Travel Editions, nor will I ever book again.

Date of experience : September 14, 2018

Dear Ms Denny. We are extremely sorry that this tour was unsatisfactory and we are speaking to the group organiser from York TAS to rectify the situation and compensate all participants on the tour appropriately. We are writing to everyone today so ensure that this issue is resolved very quickly. Kind regards, Ed Coventry Managing Director.

Absolutely brilliant trip, would deffo recommend!!

So we haven't officially finished the tour yet (we leave tomorrow) but I am very excited to write a really positive review! As an 18 year old gap year student, this wouldn't have been on my radar for a trip but I am thoroughly grateful that my great aunt invited me. We did the Neolithic sites of Malta and it was brilliant. The element of debate involved in this is fascinating and was a really great intro to the way archeology and prehistory works (and occasionally doesn't). Also, as something we've never really covered in school, it was a super interesting week of immersion. Likewise it was great in broadening my cultural awareness, as my knowledge of Malta at all is very limited. The balance of history with sightseeing has been brilliant and I am really looking forward to showing the pictures and raving about this trip to my family and friends. David was a fantastic guide, he knows what he's talking about and he enjoys what he is talking about. He made sure that the elements that needed to be clear always were, linking in his evening lectures with the sites we visited and bouncing very well off the local guides we used. He was also great to chat to in evening meals and throughout the day, would 10000% recommend! Steve came too and was wonderful at organising things in the background and also providing general comic relief! He's a great storyteller and honestly deserves his own radio show 😀; his use of the microphone on the bus is gonna be up with my highlights (as well as the temples of course!!). At evening meals he would make sure that I (as a vegetarian) had enough options of food to eat and was just really great at accomodating for everyone's needs. I genuinly don't think I can say enough good things or recommend this too much -especially to people closer to my age who may not be considering this as much. I would really really love to do something like this again, so yeah 10/10 and thank you very very much to Steve and David! 😀

Our tour guides have ranged from very good to outstanding; generally we've been given a lot of interesting info while on the coach to a town etc, then people have wandered around on their own as they wished, apart from particular guided visits. Other participants on the tours have always been perfectly pleasant.

The hotel upgrade might be a good idea if you would prefer to change the more basic, but still perfectly OK hotel, but unlike nurserymaid I wouldn't take the train upgrade. I don't find that Eurostar is worth it any more, as it's a much more rushed journey, so no relaxed dinner as it used to be. If you are thinking of travelling at a particularly busy time, such as October or February half-terms, Christmas or Easter etc, perhaps first class might be worth considering.

Friends who went on the Provence tour this year in June felt that the Saturday visit to the Pont du Gard and Uzès was rather rushed for their taste, so they stayed on in Uzès for more time in the market and a light lunch and some extra time exploring the pretty town, then caught the bus back to Avignon in the late afternoon.

Travel Editions

Travel Editions is one of the UK's leading specialist independent escorted tour operators.

Customer service and an attention to detail are at the heart of everything we do, with the benefit of affordable prices from travelling as a group but we will always treat you as an individual.

We set up Travel Editions over 23 years ago with the clear intention of offering a range of cultural short breaks and extended tours which would appeal to 'travellers' not 'tourists' and whose itineraries were not readily available on the high street – the legion of loyal customers that travel with us year after year shows that this philosophy is succeeding!

As the years have passed, our range of tours has developed and diversified. More than 20 years ago we launched a rail holiday to Provence travelling by Eurostar and TGV to Avignon – today this is one of nearly 30 tours that use this mode of transport – the journey becomes part of the holiday and is one of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel.

We also offer a large range (72 in 2017) of special events in the UK with expert speakers, concerts, special dinners in historic locations such as the SS Great Britain and many other unique events that bring the culture and history of our wonderful country to life. This has been expanded to adopt the same principles on short educational trips abroad which is found in our Art & History Abroad programme.

Our philosophy remains the same however:

'to offer the benefits of group travel but to treat every customer as an individual'

Offering a wide range of extended tours and cultural short breaks for the discerning traveller, we were established in 1994 and are now one of the leading specialist independent escorted tour operators in the UK. We started with the idea of creating itineraries that were not readily available on the high street, and the team still remains focused on offering escorted tours that appeal to travellers rather than tourists. Over the years, we have developed and diversified its range of escorted tours to include rail tours, air tours, history tours, Christmas tours and even specialist interest tours that have specific appeal for walkers, foodies, art lovers, music addicts and flower enthusiasts. From enjoying wonderful walks and tasty local cuisine in Crete to visiting the art nouveau buildings of Milan and exploring the architectural gems of the Netherlands, Travel Editions creates amazing tours to suit every budget and interest. As rail transport is one of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel, we have carefully developed nearly 30 exciting escorted rail tours that include trips to France, Spain, Brussels, Arnhem, Luxembourg and the Italian Riviera. We believe that the journey becomes part of the holiday, and is why we also offer a range of tours by air, such as Delphi and Mount Pelion in Greece, the beautiful Italian city of Florence, and Paphos, Nicosia and the Troodos Mountains in Cyprus. Whatever the escorted tour or the destination, we provide holidays that are packed full of cultural and historic treasures, as well as plenty of free time to relax and soak up the local atmosphere and the regional food and wine. One of the best things about us is that the team can tailor-make all tours to your group’s budget and specification, be it shopping till you drop in New York or tasting the most delicious gastronomic delights of Sicily. Not only can the activities be tailored to meet your requirements but so can the travel options, hotel selection (three, four or five-star hotel) and the whole itinerary. Alternatively, you can simply pick one of the many carefully curated escorted tours listed on our website. In almost all cases, daily excursions are included in the price of a trip, and all excursions are taken by private coach. The size of the group varies depending on the escorted tour, and we limit some holidays to lower numbers to suit the nature of the specific holiday. Walking, culinary and special interest tours are limited to approximately 20-30 passengers, and the Europe by Rail and Europe by Air holidays are limited to a maximum of 35 passengers. Then there’s the UK British Heritage Tours with a maximum capacity of 49, however, some are much less than this. No matter which tours you choose, you will never feel as though you are in a big group. We are passionate about delivering a personal service every step of the way, and our team of experts will arrange your holiday with minimum fuss and maximum effort. Customer service and attention to detail are at the heart of everything we do, plus you will always be treated as an individual and get the benefit of affordable prices by travelling as a group. Another bonus is that we are ABTA and ATOL protected, which means your money and your holiday will be protected from the moment you book. In addition to offering extended tours and cultural short breaks, we also offer a large range of special events in the UK that bring the culture and history of the United Kingdom to life. These events can be found in the Art & History Abroad programme and include expert speakers, entertaining concerts and impressive dinners in historic locations. ....less

Established in 1994. Travel Editions was set up in 1994 with the clear intention of offering a range of cultural short breaks and extended tours which would appeal to 'travellers' not 'tourists' and whose itineraries were not readily available on the high street – the legion of loyal customers who travel with us year after year shows that this philosophy is succeeding! Ed Coventry – Managing Director says; “Little did we know when John Dryden and I set up Travel Editions in Spring 1994 that so many years later we would be writing a press release to be shared on social media, the internet and email, celebrating our pearl anniversary. For a start, there was no email and no social media! Which just goes to show how the travel industry has been revolutionised by technology over the past three decades. We have been quick to embrace its benefits but not at the expense of our core value of personal service as the cornerstone of everything that we do. Our range of tours may have changed and developed over the years, but our key philosophy of providing the benefits of group travel but treating everyone as an individual remains the same. Here’s to the next 30 years!” ....less

As the years have passed, our range of tours has developed and diversified. More than 25 years ago we launched a rail holiday to Provence travelling by Eurostar and TGV to Avignon – today this is one of many tours that use this mode of transport – the journey becomes part of the holiday and is one of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel. As more and more travellers are looking for a more active type of holiday, Travel Editions has continued to develop its range of Special Interest Tours our selection brings together the increasing number of tours that have very specific appeal for food lovers, flower enthusiasts and walkers. Our range of tours by air are an eclectic mix, ranging from Norway in the North to Greece and Crete in the southern Mediterranean. Whatever the destination, the holidays are packed full of cultural and historic treasures, but also include free time for you to relax and soak up the local atmosphere and, of course, the regional food and wine! My mother has been a regular customer of Travel Editions. She's always rated this company and has encouraged her friends to also book with them. However, her trip to The Netherlands was cancelled because of Covid 19. I accept that this is not the fault of the company but the way they've dealt with my mother is appalling. They accept that she is due a full refund of the money she's paid and that it is their legal obligation to do so. However, the Managing Director, Ed Coventry has made it clear he intends to break the law and is refusing to refund my mother. Please note, this company is still taking bookings and deposits from new customers on their website and it seems to be the case that if the holiday cancels because of Covid 19, they refuse to return your deposit even though you should be refunded.

A Secret War Tour beyond Outstanding! I have been on many, many battlefield tours over the years but this Secret War Tour with Travel Editions was truly outstanding. Well ahead of the rest and then some. I thought I knew what to expect but my expectations were greatly exceeded. Why? Because everything about it reeked of quality. We stayed in a superb hotel half board, had a comfortable coach with a superb driver, thank you, Oskar! And the tour guide was superb, warm, friendly and highly professional (am I allowed to mention your name, Yvonne?). The guest speakers were the very best available, bar none, and the locations visited left one with a feeling of awe and wonderment. They just could not have been better. So much was packed into the programme that it took me four days to recover! This was a Secret War Tour beyond expectations and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Thank you Travel Editions!

Breaking the law. I would like to echo the remarks made by other recent reviews, (see review "My mother has been a regular customer of Travel Editions") This company has broken the law, its contractual obligations, and its word, by refusing to make refunds for cancelled tours until March 2021. It is therefore not to be trusted. I am hoping that the recent ruling against TUI will make them change their minds but I doubt it.

The Quick List ↩ 1. Best tripod overall 2. Best for sturdiness 3. Best lightweight tripod 4. Best with 3-way head 5. Best for versatility 6. Best alloy tripod 7. Best budget carbon How to choose How we test

I like to travel light, whether I’m walking city streets, trekking across the countryside or jetting off to the other side of the world. Conventional full-sized tripods tend to be big, heavy, and unwieldy – so I often leave mine at home, making it completely useless. By contrast, the best travel tripods literally take a load off. They’re made to be compact and lightweight but, in the past, they’ve often been notorious for being flimsy, relatively unstable, and too small to offer a useful operating height. The new breed of travel tripods tempt me with the promise of giving me the best of both worlds.

Most modern travel tripods have legs that swing upwards for storage, so that the head is encircled by the feet. This typically reduces the folded height by as much as 4" / 10cm. Some also include as many as five sections in each leg, and a two-section extending center column, reducing the folded height even further, while still enabling reasonably lofty shooting. I find they take longer to set up and fold away but it’s a trade I’m willing to make for smaller stowage.

Matthew Richards is a photographer and journalist who has spent years using and reviewing all manner of photo gear. He is an encyclopedia when it comes to all manner of cameras, camera holsters and bags, flashguns, tripods and heads, printers, papers, and inks, and just about anything imaging-related.

Here's a quick rundown of all the lenses in this guide. Scroll down for a more in-depth look at the individual products.

Best tripod: Peak Design Travel Tripod

1. Peak Design Travel Tripod

Our expert review:

Specifications

Reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

✅  You like innovative design and photographic kit that makes a real statement.

✅  You want a travel tripod that has the slimmest possible profile, thanks to specially shaped legs.

✅ You don’t mind paying top-dollar for a travel tripod, and can make use of all the features.

❌  You don’t want to pay over the odds for an aluminum or carbon fiber travel tripod – there’s no denying it’s pricey.

❌  You don’t need a mobile phone mount, which is a bit fiddly to get at.

❌ You’d rather have a different type of head, although an adapter is available separately.

The Peak Design Travel Tripod may be the first tripod that Peak Design has made, but it's hands-down one of the best travel tripods that I've ever used! There is an aluminum version that's a massive 40% cheaper, however, which has all the same design features, just a little more weight and less vibration resistance. A couple of the other tripods here will go higher, but the Peak Design will still go to eye level for an average-height person, and it packs down to just 39cm in length.

I like that it's designed to cut out the dead space between the legs and the column when packed, which means it's not just short when folded but very slim too – I can put this inside my camera bag or cabin bag instead of just strapping it to the outside. The low-profile ball head is simple but brilliant, there's a phone holder hidden inside the center column, and best of all for me, the tripod feels seriously rigid.

3 Legged Thing Leo 2.0

2. 3 Legged Thing Leo 2.0

✅  You want to choose your own head, although you can buy the legs on their own.

✅  You don’t like fiddling with lots of leg clamps and dual center column clamps.

✅ You’re keeping an eye on the bottom line – it’s a pricey travel tripod.

❌  You want to choose your own head, although you can buy the legs on their own.

❌  You don’t like fiddling with lots of leg clamps and dual center column clamps.

❌ You’re keeping an eye on the bottom line – it’s a pricey travel tripod.

The 3 Legged Thing Leo 2.0 is no ordinary tripod. It folds down to just 35cm in length but opens out to offer a maximum height of 146cm and a huge payload capacity of 30kg. That far exceeds the weight of any of my camera and lens combinations but the net result is great rigidity.

I like that it has a detachable monopod leg which can also be used as a microphone or camera boom, a Tri-Mount system for adding accessories, and an innovative two-section center column. That helps it to fold down really small yet reach a decent maximum operating height. You can buy the legs on their own but I’d get the complete kit with 3 Legged Thing’s new and improved AirHed Pro Lever ball head.

The Leo 2 is not the smallest travel tripod you can get, and not the cheapest, but its ratio of folded length to maximum height, combined with its all-around versatility, make it one of the best.

Vanguard VEO 3GO 235CB

3. Vanguard VEO 3GO 235CB

✅  You want a tripod that includes a smartphone adapter and even a Bluetooth controller.

✅  You’d like a tripod that works as a monopod and selfie stick as well.

✅ You want one of the absolute lightest travel tripods on the market.

❌  You want a heftier maximum load rating than 4kg.

❌  You’d rather have a taller maximum operating height than 136cm.

❌ You don’t feel the need for a low level adapter or dual rubber pad and spiked feet.

With five sections in each swing-up leg and a two-section center column, this Vanguard folds down to just over a foot long yet gives a reasonable maximum operating height. I find it can easily fit into my daily bag or backpack. It’s also very lightweight although, as expected, the alternative aluminum version is a little heavier. The bottom leg sections are quite spindly, with a diameter of just 11mm, but stability is pretty good even at full stretch.

As well as giving a typically quick and easy change to monopod configuration, the Vanguard is more unusual in coming complete with a smartphone adapter. I like that it works well as a monopod and even a selfie stick, so I only need to take one support for the journey rather than two or three.

4. Manfrotto Befree 3-Way Live Advanced

✅  You like the idea of a hybrid travel tripod, with a head that works well for video as well as stills.

✅  You feel reassured by buying a tripod from one of the biggest names in the business.

✅ You like flip locks rather than the more usual twist locks for leg clamps.

❌  You’d rather have a tripod kit that has a more usual ball head.

❌  You don’t shoot video, but stick to stills.

❌ You’d prefer a carbon fiber travel tripod rather than an aluminum one.

The Manfrotto Befree 3-Way Live Advanced is a lightweight photographer’s travel tripod paired with a three-way head. Although ball heads have become hugely popular, I actually prefer a 3-way head for the likes of architectural and close-up shooting, where precise adjustments can be critical. The 3-way fluid head in this case uses a hydraulic damping system to make it easy for smooth, fluid camera movements, so I find it also works well for shooting video.

The tripod, meanwhile, provides a good balance between capacity, weight, and price. It’ll take 6kg of kit and only weighs 2kg itself. I’ve tested lighter and stronger tripods, but they tended to be more pricey than this one.

It’s not as tall as some of the other tripods in this guide, and doesn’t fold down particularly small, the latter not helped by having a 3-way rather than ball head. But, for the vast majority of purposes, this is an impressive all-around package and merits serious consideration for any traveling photographer or videographer.

Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Carbon Fiber tripod review

5. Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro

✅  You like different color options for the finish, instead of just black.

✅  You’d like a tripod that can adapt for tabletop and other uses.

✅ You want a tripod that comes complete with a smartphone mount.

❌  You don’t need a tripod with the extra versatility, which can be fiddly.

❌  You’d rather save money and buy the aluminum version of the tripod.

❌ You don’t like having so many leg and column clamps to deal with.

I thought the headline attraction of the so-called ‘6-in-1’ Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro would be its versatility. That’s obviously a headline feature but I’ve found that it's also a very good travel tripod, pure a simple. Even at full height it's impressively stable for its build, and it packs a few extra features that come in handy when I’m shooting with a camera or a phone.

I’ve found that it's an excellent travel tripod and, again, thanks to its versatility, it works well as a monopod and also as a mini table tripod, which are genuinely valuable additions. It's great that things like the hex key, small tripod legs, and smartphone clamp are contained within or attached to the tripod, making it much less likely that I’ll leave them behind or lose them along the way. The flip side is that the extra bits and pieces make the tripod a little heavier than it needs to be.

3 Legged Thing Punks Corey 2.0

6. 3 Legged Thing Punks Corey 2.0

✅  You’re happy with a magnesium alloy rather than carbon fiber travel tripod.

✅  You want great performance and versatility at a bargain price.

✅ You like the ability to shoot creatively from really low levels.

❌  You’d rather spend more on a carbon fiber tripod that’s not cold to the touch.

❌  You’d rather have something simpler, with less leg and column clamps to operate.

❌ You don’t need the 14kg payload because you’re using lightweight kit.

I find that all of the Punks tripods from 3 Legged Thing are very travel-friendly, but the Corey 2.0 is the smallest and easiest to pack for the journey. It has the usual swing-up legs to save stowage space, this time with five sections in each, plus a two-section head, enabling a decent maximum operating height but a very small stowage size.

Don’t be put off that this one’s not a carbon fiber tripod. It’s actually made from aerospace grade magnesium alloy and the upshot is that it’s still lightweight yet very strong, with a hefty 14kg maximum load rating.

It ticks another two boxes on my  wish list by easily converting to a monopod, and enabling ultra-low-level shooting with the option of attaching the ball head directly to the canopy (leaving the center column out of the equation). All three legs are removable, and Vanz footwear (sold separately) transforms the Corey 2.0 into a stylish tabletop tripod.

Benro Rhino FRHN05CVX20 review

7. Benro Rhino 05C (Zero Series) VX20

✅  You want a really small, lightweight tripod that still has a hefty 10kg load rating.

✅  You’re after a carbon fiber tripod that’s reasonably priced.

✅ You can make use of the secondary pan axis for shooting panoramas and video.

❌  The monopod configuration is nice to have but only stretches to a maximum height of 141cm.

❌  You’d like a travel tripod with a quick setup time.

❌ You’d prefer a tripod with feet that have metal spikes as well as rubber pads.

A plus point for me when space is at a premium is that the Benro Rhino 05C VX20 (also called the Rhino Zero Series VX20) is the smallest in a group of four recently launched Rhino travel tripods. Compactness doesn’t equate to flimsiness though and I’ve found that it’s remarkably rigid and robust for such a compact tripod. Another nice touch is that Benro’s companion VX ball heads have a secondary pan axis just under the camera plate. It’s great for taking sequences of panned shots to stitch into a panorama, and shooting video, as the panning axis remains on the level without the need to meticulously level the legs as well as the head.

I find that travel tripods have limitations, including a lower maximum working height and longer ‘unfolding’ time, but this goes with the territory and I can’t criticize the Rhino for that. Sure enough, this Benro doesn't extend to a particularly tall height, and outright rigidity can feel a little compromised if I fully extend all of the leg sections and both of the center column sections. When it’s not at full stretch though, I find this Benro is as rigid as much bigger and heavier tripods.

How to choose the best travel tripod

It’s good to be choosy when picking your perfect travel tripod for your needs and budget. Here’s a few things to bear in mind…

Carbon fiber is pricier than aluminum, but is it worth the extra?

Up-market tripods are usually made from carbon fiber instead of aluminum. They have a more luxurious feel, a smarter looking finish, and can be slightly more resistant to vibrations. Carbon fiber can also feel less cold to the touch. But the main advantage of carbon fiber is that it’s more lightweight than aluminum, giving it a clear advantage when you’re trying to shed weight. However, there can be diminishing returns. Although the weight-saving can be substantial in full-sized tripods, it’s much less noticeable in relatively small tripods. For many travel tripods that are available in both aluminum and carbon fiber options, the latter typically only saves around 200g in weight, little more than 10 per cent. Considering that the carbon fiber editions are often about 50 per cent more expensive to buy, aluminum travel tripods can be more cost effective.

How small is the tripod when folded?

A decade ago, the Giotto’s company launched a series of Vitruvian tripods, named after Leonardo da Vinci’s drawing, ‘The Vitruvian Man’. As in the drawing, the legs swing upwards but, in the case of the Giotto’s tripods they swung up completely, adopting a vertically upright orientation for stowing away. The trick was that, by fully extending the center column before swinging the legs up, the tripod head no longer extended beyond the length of the legs, making the carrying size much smaller. Many recent travel tripods fold down small enough to fit inside a bag or backpack, rather than needing to be tethered to the outside.

Can I save space by using a tripod as a monopod as well?

A neat trick of many recent travel tripods is that you can unscrew one of the tripod legs, detach the center column, and join the two together for use as a monopod, complete with ball head. That can be a real space saver if you like using a monopod as well as a tripod, as you only have to carry one bit of kit.

What’s so good about multi-angle legs?

Pretty much all travel tripods these days have legs that can be locked at multiple angles to the center column. Typically either two or three alternative angles are available, in addition to the legs being able to swing up vertically. This can help when you’re shooting on uneven terrain, or when there are obstacles in the way. For example, you might need to use one or two legs in a near-horizontal orientation and place the feet on a wall or table to get into your desired shooting position. Another bonus is that, by splaying the legs to a wider angle when shooting at low operating heights, you can increase stability and reduce the risk of the tripod toppling over if knocked.

How low can you go when shooting with a tripod?

Multi-angle legs help to reduce the minimum shooting height but the limiting factor is generally the point at which the center column touches the ground. The minimum height is therefore the height of the center column plus the ball head. A two-section extending center column can help to further reduce the minimum operating height, as well as the carrying height.  Some tripods are supplied with a short, stubby ‘low angle adaptor’. You can attach this to the tripod head and use it instead of the center column. The center column is also removable in most tripods, so you can invert it and shoot from between two of the legs with the camera upside down, right down at ground level.

What’s best for feet, pads or spikes?

Rubber pads are the normal footwear for tripods these days. They work well on solid ground as well as on grass and sandy areas. For soft surfaces like carpet, spikes can offer a more assured footing. Some tripods are supplied with both rubber pads and metal spikes, so you can swap between them as needed. Another option that used to be more common in the past is rubber pads on a threaded mount, so you can screw them in to reveal metal spikes beneath.

How we test travel tripods

We measure the maximum operating height of each tripod and its folded height for carrying, complete with head attached. We also measure the combined weight of each set of tripod legs and head, using electronic scales, and measure the diameter of all leg sections, from the widest to the thinnest, using digital calipers. We check the ease of use, smoothness and precision of all available adjustments in each set of tripod legs and heads. This ranges from adjusting leg sections and pivot facilities (where available), to the locking mechanisms of the head, as well as independent pan and friction damping adjustments, where fitted. To check overall stability, we shoot with a range of camera bodies fitted with wide-angle, standard, telephoto and macro lenses. We look for good resistance to flexing and vibrations throughout the whole range of operating heights, including the tallest available settings with the legs and center column fully extended.

AVOID

Date of experience : 15 June 2020

Date of experience : 13 March 2020

Date of experience : 20 July 2018

i am very sorry that this experience was not as good as anticipated.

Date of experience : 25 August 2020

Date of experience : 14 September 2018

Bodrum EDITION review: is this summer 2024's coolest hotel?

Ibiza, Mykonos, Bodrum: Turkey’s turquoise coast has firmly established itself among the Mediterranean party capital route , with superyachts routinely mooring along the peninsula.

Kate Moss, George Clooney and a smattering of Saudi princes have been spotted on its shores — and the Bodrum EDITION, built into its westerly hillside, is primed for a well-heeled crowd. Having recently earned a Michelin star, and welcomed a head chef with a star of his own, it's safe to say the hotel's seventh season relaunch means business.

Where is it?

Along the west of the Bodrum peninsula, a few kilometres from Yalikavak Marina, or 35-minutes drive from Bodrum proper. The hotel has everything you need — truly — so get out if you can, or stay in and enjoy.

The EDITION, which has 20 properties (and two more in the works), has nailed low-key luxe, covered in cool whites and light wooden decor. Designer Ian Schrager’s mantra — “simplicity is true luxury” — is made flesh in Bodrum, where the hotel’s quintessential Le Labo scent wafts gently through the high-ceilinged lobby and beyond. There are only fleeting design nods to its location, but looking out to the olive trees and bright blue of the Aegean is a helpful reminder.

This is where the hotel really excels, having found the formula to create a resort that looks and feels nothing like a resort. Along with its three restaurants and beach bar, there’s a private beach and infinity pool (with reams of white sunbeds and cabanas on its glorious jetty); while water activities, from boat rides to jet skiing, can take you from land to sea in seconds. There’s also an enormous spa with a full Turkish hammam, a gym (with a reformer Pilates bed), and a selection of boutiques which change with the season, this year including model Oliver Cheshire’s swimwear brand, Ché Studios.

Extracurricular

Yalikavak, a kind of Dubai-on-sea, is either a half-hour walk or five minute taxi ride; marvel at the gleaming promenade and rows of designer stores, which are interspersed with more Michelin-starred eateries (and Salt Bae’s famed steakhouse, Nusr-Et). It’s decidedly new money — and heaps of it — worth a visit for a quick gawp alone. For a more mixed bag, head to Bodrum, where tourists, locals and boating types mingle. Stroll along the marina, grab an ice cream (and, if you’re looking to beef up your wardrobe, a seriously high quality designer knockoff), and blag your way onto a superyacht if you can.

Food & drink

The Michelin Guide began on Turkey’s coast six months ago, and Kitchen was among the first to be awarded. The menu is Aegean-inspired, with many of the vegetables and herbs grown by the hotel; the Bargilya blue tail shrimp couldn’t be fresher, while octopus and sea bream, calamari, grouper and more have also made it up the few flights from sea level to diners’ plates.

This summer, the hotel opens Brava (headed up by Michelin-starred Stefano Ciotti) for all of your gnocchi and lemon risotto needs; there’s also Morena, an all-day lunch spot, which dishes up everything from ceviche to truffle sushi, and prime cuts and seafood on the grill. You could spend a week here and still have a long list of dishes to try (though do yourself a favour and get the spinach gozleme made in the breakfast area each morning). The martinis are exceptional, too.

Which room?

It would be criminal to pitch up at this beachfront property and fail to secure a sea view (around 80% of the rooms have one). There are 108 rooms, suites and villas, and sizing up is well worth it — there’s nothing quite like peeling the curtains back (or rather, pressing a button that does it for you) and seeing the shimmering blue stretching out into the horizon. Most also have outdoor space, along with marble bathrooms (with deep tubs), and ergonomic work areas.

Away Luggage Review: Are the Popular Carry-Ons Worth the Hype?

We put the internet's favorite suitcase through hours of testing to determine if it's worth buying.

pink away suitcase

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

What I thought of the Away Carry-On

Should you buy away carry-on luggage, other types of away suitcases, more away travel products we like.

As an analyst in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, I have personally tested dozens of travel products, from carry-on luggage and smart suitcases to hardside luggage and travel backpacks . After putting the Away carry-on through our rigorous Lab evaluations — which include using specialized equipment to analyze scratch and water resistance, as well as an obstacle course to measure wheel performance and maneuverability — I was blown away by this bag for being impressively lightweight, scratch resistant, easy to maneuver and fitting everything in our packing tests. In fact, it landed the top spot for carry-on luggage in our roundup of the best luggage brands of 2024 .

The bottom line: Away luggage is absolutely worth investing in.

What is Away luggage?

Away is a travel gear brand that offers a variety of travel accessories, including checked suitcases , backpacks , packing cubes and weekender bags . The brand originally went viral for its carry-on featuring a removable battery that can charge your phone on the go, but Away has since stopped offering battery packs with its suitcases as most people already own portable chargers .

Away's Carry-On and Bigger Carry-On are the brand's two most popular items — they are made from the same materials and have the same features but in two different sizes. In the brand's most recent update to its luggage line, the standard Carry-On now has a slightly larger packing capacity and is a bit heavier than the previous model. I put the new standard Carry-On to the test in the Textiles Lab and I used the Bigger Carry-On during a recent vacation to find out if Away luggage is actually worth buying.

Away The Carry-On

The Carry-On

Away The Bigger Carry-On

The Bigger Carry-On

When it comes to luggage material, polycarbonate reigns supreme over other hardside materials like plastics. Away carry-ons are made with polycarbonate, which is extremely durable and more lightweight than metals like aluminum.

Polycarbonate bags typically ace our drop tests, which involve GH pros filling a suitcase with a set weight and releasing the luggage from a 3-foot height. We repeat this test at various angles and note any damages and imperfections. As suspected, after I dropped it from different angles using our drop tester, the Away carry-on showed no dents, damages or changes in appearance .

Image no longer available

During testing, we also use a wire to scratch the surface of the suitcase and then rate any scuffs or marks left behind. Compared to other suitcases, Away's carry-on aced our scratch-resistance testing, showing very minimal scuffs and remaining in great condition . Because marks and scuffs are inevitable on hardside luggage, the suitcases also come with a magic eraser sponge, so you can easily buff the outside of your suitcase when scuffs appear to keep your luggage looking fresh trip after trip.

I gave Away's handles lower comfort scores, compared to the other carry-ons I tested. They felt a bit wobbly and less sturdy than other carry-on handles, and they don't offer any padding at the grip. The newest iteration of the brand's carry-on luggage features an additional underside grab handle near the wheels to help make it easier to stow and retrieve from an overhead bin.

The 360º wheels rolled easily over a variety of different surfaces when I was at the airport, including linoleum, tile and carpet. Testers agreed, finding this suitcase easy to maneuver through our obstacle course and over different floorings.

A carry-on absolutely has to hold everything you need for your vacation. Away carry-ons have massive interiors , clocking in at 39.8L for the Carry-On and 47.9L for the Bigger Carry-On. When you open the suitcase, there's equal packing space on both sides. One side is a large zippered compartment, and the other is open with compression straps to keep everything in place. There are also zippered pockets for smaller items, so nothing gets lost at the bottom of your suitcase. For ultimate organization, pair the suitcase with the brand's mesh packing cubes , which excelled in our recent packing cubes test and fit perfectly in the carry-on.

an empty away carry on laid open flat on a white table, good housekeeping's luggage review

I was impressed with just how much I could fit in the Bigger Carry-On — enough for a whole week's vacation without needing a checked bag. It was easy to keep all my belongings organized, and I especially loved the included laundry bag that kept my dirty clothes separate. This bag came with a stylish leather luggage tag in a similar color to the suitcase that keeps my contact info accessible if my luggage gets lost. (Remember not to put your home address on your luggage tag and instead just your email address or phone number.) Away luggage also features TSA-compliant locks to keep your belongings protected.

Starting at $275 for the Carry-On, Away luggage isn't cheap. But for the cost, you get a sleek suitcase made with durable high-quality materials and a well-organized interior for easy packing. At a similar price to our other top-tested luggage brands, like TravelPro and Samsonite , Away carry-ons aren't the most expensive suitcases I've tested either. (Both Tumi and Rimowa carry-ons start at $650, for example.) The brand also boasts an impressive 100-day return period on unused products, so you have lots of time to decide if it's the right fit for you. Note that personalized products and final sale items are not eligible for returns or exchanges.

If you love its chic appearance and durable polycarbonate shell, Away luggage can be worth the investment. But if you're ultimately in the market for something more affordable, I suggest checking out our top-tested picks from Target and Amazon Basics .

preview for How to pack 20 outfits in one hand-luggage suitcase

Besides the famous carry-ons, the brand offers a few other styles of suitcases. There are checked sizes of the polycarbonate luggage as well as aluminum styles. The checked bags are made with the same durable polycarbonate material as the carry-ons and match in appearance if you're looking to create a stylish set.

I haven't yet tested Away's aluminum carry-ons , but I am wary of the higher price tag (starting at $675) and additional weight (10.1 lbs compared to 7.5 lbs for the polycarbonate version). Beyond that, it does feature an overall similar design with 360° wheels and a telescopic handle.

Away also offers Flex styles of its polycarbonate suitcases. These suitcases expand for an additional 2.25" of space to fit all the extra goodies you bought on vacation. However, when the suitcase is fully expanded, it no longer works as carry-on luggage and must be checked. Note that this style has a higher price tag than the brand's traditional polycarbonate carry-ons.

In addition to the brand's suitcases, GH analysts have tested a variety of travel products from Away. We were especially impressed by Away's Everywhere Bag (available in standard , medium and large sizes), which held an impressive amount in our Lab tests and was a favorite among testers for its sleek look and roomy, well-organized interior. The brand recently launched a trendy quilted version too!

Raffles at The OWO review: a quintessentially British stay

This heritage building has been given a twist as a luxury hotel in the nation's capital

Exterior of the Old War Office

If you've walked from Big Ben to Trafalgar Square, or meandered from St James's Park to the Thames, the chances are you've seen – and admired – the Old War Office. The turreted, dove-grey building is one of the jewels of Whitehall, completed in 1906 to house Britain's imperial military machine.

For much of the 20th century, its offices were inhabited by Britain's leading politicians, from Lord Kitchener to David Lloyd George, along with their armies of staffers, cooks and typists.

For a time it was the workplace of T.E. Lawrence, later Lawrence of Arabia. In 1914, he lamented to a friend that the grand marble staircase at the heart of the building was allowed to be used by "field marshals and charwomen" alone.

A century later, in 2016, the Ministry of Defence sold the building for a reported £350 million; and last year, after extensive but historically sensitive renovations, it opened as a five-star hotel, The OWO.

From the street, The OWO looks much as it has since it was constructed but, inside, a transformation has taken place. Two new floors have been built, as have three new basement levels to make room for a ballroom, a swimming pool, an underground car park and more. Thousands of square metres have been added to the building's already considerable acreage, taking its total footprint to some 76,000 square metres.

The result is easily the most major hotel to have opened in the capital in a generation.

Why stay here?

London isn't short of ultra-high-end hotels, but The OWO distinguishes itself from its peers in several ways. Its location couldn't be better: situated opposite Horse Guards Parade, it is ideally placed for visitors wishing to walk around the capital, or needing a central place to stay while doing business.

The hotel also has a tangible sense of place. You couldn't wake up in one of its rooms thinking you were in any major world city: it feels deeply English. The interiors, which were overseen by the feted designer Thierry Despont, skilfully marry old and new, allowing visitors to appreciate the old-world aesthetics of wood panelling and other original features, while enjoying high-tech loos, vast, comfortable beds and generously sized marble bathrooms.

The staff are knowledgeable and helpful, as willing to suggest childcare options as they are to come up with last-minute wardrobe help (during my stay, my dress's zip broke; within five minutes, room service had sent up a bag of safety pins). There are also a serious number of them: the ratio of staff to guest room is an astonishing 3:1.

Rooms and suites

room at Raffles at The OWO

There are 125 rooms and suites to choose from, none of which are the same, and none of which come cheap. Prices start at about £1,100 per room plus service and tax (and may not include breakfast, so look out for that).

Many of the grandest suites are named after the great figures that worked in them: the Haldane, for instance, was occupied by successive Secretaries of State for War; while the Churchill Suite was originally the army council room, where critical decisions were made during the Second World War. There are also 85 residences – privately owned apartments with access to the hotel amenities.

Eating and drinking

Mauro's Table at The OWO

The OWO has nine restaurants and bars, including a rooftop restaurant with views over St James's Park. If you don't want to order room service for breakfast, it can be taken in a light-filled atrium where the buffet options are superb (the almond croissants are particularly good) and the menu options even better.

Acclaimed chef Mauro Colagreco is in charge of three of the nine restaurants, which include Mauro's Table, a private dining room with views over Whitehall. A pre-dinner drink at the Spy Bar, the hotel's "speakeasy", is a must, and gratifyingly hard to find.

Other things to see and do

The spa at Raffles at The OWO

The spa is a big draw. Situated far beneath the ground floor, extending over four floors and designed by Goddard Littlefair, it features the usual steam rooms and saunas, and a large pool in a hall that is surprisingly tall for a room so deep underground.

For those fussy about lighting, the spa – and in fact the rest of the hotel – knocks it out of the park: the lighting is warm and not abrasive; subtly different according to each space's requirements, but always exactly right.

Look out for the hotel's remarkable collection of art, too: there's a six-metre high sculpture by Saad Qureshi and an oil painting, "Naval Officers of World War I", by Sir Arthur Stockdale Cope, on loan from the National Portrait Gallery, among other works.

The verdict

What the impressive statistics of The OWO don't capture is the hotel's style and grown-up charm.

Notable too are the warmth of its staff, and the intelligence with which this most storied of buildings has been coaxed into the 21st century, making this a truly unforgettable stay.

Vasco Translator V4 review: perfect for frequent travelers

The travel gadget i didn’t know i needed.

The Vasco Translator V4 being used to translate a large sign.

TechRadar Verdict

The Vasco Translator V4 offers reliable voice translation, speedy photo translation, and free lifetime global coverage in a pocket-sized package that’s perfect for your next holiday or business trip.

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

  • Two-minute review

  • Should you buy it?

When I crammed the Vasco Translator V4 into the small pouch on the side of my rucksack a few days before the start of my holiday, I have to admit that I was quite skeptical as to whether I would actually ever need to use the gadget. The latest product from electronic manufacturer Vasco, I believed that this portable translator, which supports 108 languages, would simply pale in comparison to the translation capabilities of my far pricier iPhone 15 Plus .

After two weeks testing the device in the heart of Tokyo, however, I can report that it is a formidable device that is in many ways far superior to simply relying on your phone, and perhaps even better than some of the best translation software .

The Vasco Translator V4 being used to translate a store display.

Vasco Translator V4: Two-minute review

So, what makes this translation device better? First, there’s the matter of the Vasco Translator V4’s more convenient form factor. It’s remarkably slim, with a candy bar shape that's easy to slot into even a cramped pocket. It has a slightly rubberised plastic back, which is pleasantly grippy and successfully endured being roughly tossed into various bags and even occasionally dropped throughout my trip.

On the left hand side of the device, there's a simple volume rocker while the right hand side features a power button and two speech recognition buttons which are used for voice translation. Each button denotes the language of one speaker, allowing you to intuitively switch between translating either to or from your desired language as you converse. In addition to plenty of chats with native Japanese speakers, I was also able to test the device’s translation capabilities in a handful of other languages.

Although far from a conclusive appraisal of all 76 languages that are currently supported by the voice translation, I found that it was quite fast and very accurate - with a few bilingual friends even remarking that the results were noticeably superior to both Google Translate and Apple 's Translate app. Sure, the odd bit of nuance was inevitably lost here and there, but everything was good enough to have me navigating everyday interactions in shops and restaurants with ease.

The top of the device contains an array of microphones used for this purpose and I found that they did a good job of distinguishing voices from loud background noise like construction work or passing trains. The microphones are flanked by two small LED indicators that alternate between two colors to denote the current speaker which is a great touch. The bottom of the device features a USB-C port used for charging or attaching a pair of USB-C headphones. While a dedicated headphones jack would definitely be better, the ability to use some form of headphones is still welcome.

It’s not just good for voice translation, though, as the Vasco Translator V4 also offers fast photo translation. The 8-megapixel camera can be quite blurry and slow to focus, which makes it harder to use in motion, but I was still consistently impressed with the results. The translation of museum displays, signs, advertisement brochures, and restaurant menus was quick and, as far as I can tell, right on the money. Although the 5-inch touch-screen is quite small, you have the nifty ability to zoom into your translated text or even isolate it against an easy-to-read plain white background.

A close up shot of the Vasco Translator V4/

Elsewhere, the device supports text translation, though the tiny on-screen keyboard definitely hampers its capabilities in this regard. It also has a language learning tool, but this largely just boils down to basic electronic flashcards. There is also a group chat function, which lets you communicate with colleagues, friends or even family - provided that you can successfully convince them to download and set up the Vasco MultiTalk app on their phones.

It's a solid feature set, but the biggest selling point of the Vasco Translator V4 is comfortably its lifetime global cell coverage. Not having to scramble for a local SIM card the second you land is a welcome relief and it's hard to overstate the value proposition here. While most other pocket translators cost less up front, they then rely on some form of expensive recurring subscription fee. The Vasco Translator V4, in contrast, will simply work almost anywhere in the world at no additional cost.

Depending on the features or settings that you use, you’re also looking at roughly four days battery life with frequent use or about a week on standby mode - keeping you more focused on enjoying your trip than where to find the nearest power outlet.

It’s not a cheap device by any means, and those on a budget will certainly be able to make do with a comparably priced phone, but it’s a great gadget for those willing to spend a little more for a much smoother experience aboard.

A translated conversation on the Vasco Translator V4.

Vasco Translator V4: Price and availability

  • Priced at $389 / £389
  • Available now in the US and UK
  • Not readily available in Australia

The Vasco Translator V4 is available now from the Vasco Electronics website or third-party retailers like Amazon in the US and UK. At £389 / $389, it is pretty expensive up front, even compared to other similar devices. However, when you factor in the lifetime global cell coverage, which works in nearly 200 countries, the high cost of entry becomes a lot more palatable.

Although our sample was provided in the rather plain black colorway, the device is also available in grey, blue, red, and white.

Vasco Translator V4: Specs

Should you buy the vasco translator v4, buy it if....

You're a very frequent traveler The Vasco V4 Translator works well for both conversation and photo translation and could be a very worthwhile investment if you frequently jet off to countries where you don't speak the native language.

You're sick of subscriptions Some competing pocket translators come in cheaper up front, but rely on expensive subscription services or require you to source your own sim card. The Vasco V4 Translator is a great choice if you don't want to deal with that expense.

Don't buy it if...

You could make do with a phone As good as the Vasco Translator V4 is, most of us could still just make do with our existing devices - especially when you consider that it costs about as much as some mobile phones.

Also consider

Not keen on the Vasco Translator V4? These two cheaper alternatives should be on your radar.

How I tested the Vasco Translator V4

  • Used for a month
  • Tested abroad and at home
  • Tested with multiple languages

I used the Vasco Translator V4 for just over a month, which included a two week trip to Japan and some testing at home and in the office. Some of the languages I tested included Spanish, Japanese, Russian, Romanian, German, and Italian. During my time with the device, I endeavored to use every available feature in order to assess its performance and usefulness.

In order to test the efficacy of the translation, I compared my results to competing software like Google Translate and Apple's Translate app and considered the opinion of a handful of multi-lingual friends, colleagues, and family members.

Singapore Enters Its Studio 54 Era With The Launch of its First EDITION Hotel

A nightclub unveiling kicked it off, naturally..

Singapore Enters Its Studio 54 Era With The Launch of its First EDITION Hotel

One of the first people I met in Singapore was Brando. Perched at the lobby bar at the brand-new EDITION Hotel, with its Lalique-esque decanters bathing in lilac light, Brando wore an emerald green Issey Miyake pleated coat, a floral button-down shirt, and a pink bespoke milliner-made fedora above Gucci Pink Mirror Shield sunglasses that shone from chartreuse to magenta like a metaverse sky. It was 8 p.m.

Mesmerized, I approached him. Brando said he was there for a Daum Crystal party; I asked if he worked for them. He drawled, “Iiiii don’t work for aaanybody.”

Brando epitomized a nightlife archetype I’d loved since 2008 when I cocktail waitressed at the Boom Boom Room in New York City. There, it seemed more accurate to say I worked surrealist’s balls, not shifts; perched on our suede marshmallow barstools and Terrazza sofas were flame-haired Carmen de Alessio (a co-founder of Studio 54), Patrick McDonald with his top hats and Cleopatra eyebrows, and Daphne Guinness—who hung out at Dali’s house as a child and was mentored by David Bowie–with her Cruella de Ville hair and Ex Machina ensembles. Amanda Lepore, Beyoncé, and Debbie Harry might be braiding through the room at any given moment.

Back then, I loved the LCD Soundsystem song “Losing My Edge.” The song is about an aging hipster who worries that the next generation is coming up behind him. But he swears “he was there,” calling out all the white-hot moments and places in his past.

My “being there” was in that NYC orbit in my late twenties. My friends and I were especially fond of Avenue on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Rose Bar at Gramercy Park Hotel on Thursdays, and Sway on Sundays (The Smiths night, IYKYK). I even studied nightlife; my best friend was a designer for Andre Balazs Hotels, and we were obsessed with the history of after-dark institutions like Area and Max’s Kansas City.

Courtesy of EDITION Singapore

Fifteen years and two children later, I live in Los Angeles, far removed from that orbit and more like the person who talks about “being there.” I’ve had mixed feelings about that, much like the tension in that song.

When I received an assignment to cover the launch weekend of The Singapore EDITION hotel, I was intrigued. The three-day event promised “a secret surprise unveiling,” and I wondered if it could recapture the cigarette and champagne-fueled magic of my past—or perhaps a different, glittering future.

After all, the EDITION brand was founded by Ian Schrager of Studio 54, arguably the best club in the history of nocturnal pursuits. Without Schrager, I wouldn’t have had my hall-of-fame experiences in NYC at Rose Bar.

In 1984, four years after Studio 54 closed, Schrager invented the boutique hotel with Morgans Hotel in NYC. “When I went into the hotel world, I knew that you have to create a visceral experience, and I learned that from the club,” he told the New York Times in 2018, the same year he opened EDITION hotels in Shanghai, Bodrum, Times Square, Barcelona, Bangkok, and West Hollywood. EDITION hotels strongly emphasize design, architecture, and nightlife, from the signature Pop Art-colored felted billiard tables to the Kubrickian light fixtures to the nautilus-shaped staircases that have spawned a million Instagram posts. Today, there are 20 EDITIONS, with my editor covering the Rivera Maya EDITION at Kanai launch mere weeks ago.

Back at the lobby bar, I said goodnight to Brando and retired to my minimalist dream of a room to wonder if this weekend would restore a modicum of my lost edge. Deeper down, I nervously wondered: was I even cool enough to be there?

Where the Hanging Gardens of Babylon Met Bladerunner

The morning after meeting Brando, I headed to the rooftop deck for 8 a.m. Pilates and a sound bath with instructor Dawn Sim, who was doing a one-legged king pigeon on a raised bed in the middle of the pool when I arrived. Singapore, resembling the Hanging Gardens of Babylon meets Bladerunner, was hot that second weekend in May. It also felt a bit like being inside a cloud, with humidity topping 76%.

A busboy handed me a tray with a rolled cold towel, two shots of watermelon juice, and headphones. Sim asked if anyone had any injuries or pain points; my back was throbbing, but I was too embarrassed to admit it (age being the culprit again). She led us in some light stretches with pulsing, then announced the soundbath portion of the experience.

“Our bodies are about 60% water, and vibration affects water,” she said, circling a singing bowl’s rim with a mallet a few times. The water inside the bowl bubbled up like it had 20 tiny fountains inside it. We donned the headphones, laid down, and slow, spa-like music filled my brain.

At one point, Sim placed the bowls on our bellies. She tapped the mallet on my bowl, and my stomach vibrated. I thought about water and molecules and Dr. Emoto, who famously exposed water to positive speech and thoughts, then froze it to create visually “pleasing” ice crystals instead of distorted crystals when exposed to negativity. What was this water doing to me, and what was I doing to it? I wondered in my sound bath delirium. I hoped we left each other better; as I sat up straight for my namaste, I noticed the pain was gone. Maybe I was Benjamin Buttoning.

Afterward, I enjoyed caramelized banana oatmeal in the hotel restaurant and headed to Gardens By The Bay, a Biodome-style plant extravaganza that felt like Pandora from Avatar , with a diaphanous Dave Chihuly exhibit. Before I even walked in, a man was playing Pachelbel’s Canyon on piano at the entrance, and as corny as that is, I started crying. Singapore was burrowing into my vintage soul.

A City Known For Its Vibrant Greenery and Cuisine

“When we created this hotel, we obviously wanted to embrace the fact that we’re in Singapore,” Singapore EDITION General Manager, Ranim Ben Romdhane, told me in the hotel’s Punch Room, a rhapsody in Yves Klein blue. In that vein, the Singapore EDITION was designed by Moshe Safdie (who also imagined Singapore’s lotus-shaped Art Science Museum and Marina Bay Sands, resembling a surfboard atop two towers). Romdhane explained that Singapore is still 50% natural, a philosophy extending into the Singapore EDITION, which has 300 plants in the lobby alone and 162 preserved fern spheres dangling from the ceiling like upside-down Truffula trees from the Lorax.

That night, we headed to the Lau Pa Sat hawker market, with its smoky, open-air, neon-lit diner stalls, à la Wong Kar Wai. Drenched in the aroma of sizzling satay, a man who delivered our food explained that Singaporean cuisine is rooted in its three primary cultures: Malaysian, Chinese, and Indian.

I talked to Frank Roberts, VP of Brand Experience at Edition Hotels, between bites of vegan Briyani with rice, naan, dal, and hari chutney. Within minutes, we realized we both ran in the same New York circles in the late aughts and early 2010s: he actually opened Rose Bar in 2006; when I mentioned the DJ David Katz and my predilection to Thursday nights there, he nodded; we both remembered meeting owner Nur Khan’s 40-pound African serval cat, which lived in his Soho loft and was nicknamed “the tiger.” Roberts was also familiar with the epic parties thrown at Sway on Sunday nights. We were there .

Roberts is responsible for executing the brand’s vision through its restaurants, press, nightlife culture, and programming to create the right vibes for each property. This made me think about the next night’s “secret surprise unveiling” again. Not only did it seem like Roberts was always there, but he was the one making it happen.

The Club Was Giving Silencio

Of those guests, one woman wore a Chanel gold lamé bomber jacket, black hot pants, and white platform sneakers with sequined leg warmers. She was the prom queen of outer space. I noted that many guests had haircuts that called up Karen O and the Misshapes from my aughts nights. Again, my sense of belonging surged. Sadly, I didn’t see Brando, but his spirit loomed in the sartorially brazen room.

Next, DJ Mademoiselle Yulia took the stage, and behind her, a screen swirled with what looked like Dippin’ Dots in glitter. The crowd started dancing. After her was fashion designer and DJ Nicolette Yip’s set. Both women rip-roared through songs I’d never heard and club anthems I had: Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Outta My Head,” and ABBA’s "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight).”

LCD’s James Murphy also sang in my head, “I'm losing my edge to the kids whose footsteps I hear when they get on the decks.” But surrendering to the all-ages move-busting around me, I decided to make peace with my own earthly tenure.

Around 1 a.m., I was on the dance floor, reliving every best nightclub moment I’d ever experienced: Opening night at Boom Boom Room in 2009, Le Baron in Paris in 2010, followed by Berlin’s Cookies a few nights later, and of course, all those Rose Bar and Sway nights in NYC. More than nostalgia though, I was adding another epic night to the annals of disco ball-lit time. The event officially ended at 2:45 a.m., and as I returned to my plush room to text my boyfriend and 10-year-old son, lingerers moved into the boudoir-like Pink Room for a nightcap.

Weeks later, when I sat down to recall my time at the EDITION launch, I discovered another quote by Ian Schrager, who once said, “You can’t kill that social urge to meet people, to have fun, and to dance. It was with us thousands of years ago when civilization began, and it will be with us until we cease to exist.” I related. I know I will always have that urge to experience nightlife on a Studio 54 level like I had in the past and present until I cease to exist. And while I may not experience it as often, sometimes the yearning and build-up before nights like the Wonder Room launch make it even more magical.

And maybe the best way to belong is to simply believe you do, therefore contributing to the bright energy of an exceptional room.

Listen, I may be losing my edge, but on this night, I. was. there.

COMMENTS

  1. Travel Editions Reviews

  6. Oliver Cromwell Warts and All Tour

Steve kept everything going to plan and Louise very knowledgeable and filling in the details as we went along, particularly with regard to Naseby. Another very enjoyable Travel Editions tour.. A special mentions for Pullhams coaches and Oscar, our driver. Review by Williams who travelled 15-September-2022

  7. Auvergne Tour

The hotel went beyond "half board" expectations, and there were clear advantages to the Company using the same coach for the week's touring. The depth of knowledge shown by the Tour manager greatly added to the visits. This was our first tour with Travel Editions, but it will not be our last! Review by Dean who travelled 16-June-2022

  18. Travel Edition Review

Excellent review. My friend owns the big coffee-table version, and I added the travel edition to a thoughthammer order for $8.50. The price of the travel edition is certainly right, but....it somehow doesn't satisfy like the big Ka-Thunk of the original's pieces. And yes, the design of the case, with it's non-locking cover and marbles that don ...
