Travel Grants

Just one trip, the right people, and great ideas can spark enduring partnerships between communities in the Americas.

Travel is powerful: It shatters prejudices and opens individuals up to new cultures, ideas, and ways of thinking. Travel is often a means to connect the right people and ideas necessary to enact social change. This program is funded by the U.S. Department of State with implementation support by Partners of the Americas.

Each year, we award professional travel grants through our Education and Culture program to members of Partners of the Americas. The grants fund international travel for qualified members to visit other Partners of the Americas Chapters and Organizational members to work together on areas of mutual interest, supporting public diplomacy. Applicants who have not traveled and Chapters that have not had travelers are encouraged to submit an application! 

In accordance with the U.S. Department of State priority areas, we fund travel grants activities that closely align with one or more of the following goals through public diplomacy:

• Civil Society Engagement
• Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA)
• Environmental Protection and Resilience
• Inclusive Economic Growth and Entrepreneurship
• Language Learning/Language Teaching
• Leadership Capacity Building
• Media Literacy/Countering Disinformation

Other travel themes (such as art) can be funded, but must be closely tied to 1 or more of the above themes. It is recommended to only pick 1-2 themes. A strong proposal is clear and concise.

Travel grants fund trips that include a minimum of 10 days of professional activities between:

• July 15 – August 15, 2024

Hosts should be a Partners of the Americas Chapter and/or Organizational Member.

The exchange should be between the United States and one of the following countries:  

Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Kits and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Applicant Eligibility ​

ALL Traveler Applicants must… ​

• Be a citizen of the country where they reside – it must be a country listed above
• Travel to a Partners Chapter or Organizational Member
• Have an account on PartnersConnect
• Be 18+ at the time that the application is submitted ​
• Have a valid passport for 6 months post-travel ​​
• Submit the online application with all required documents, by the application deadline
• Have host approval prior to submission
• Not have received a travel grant in the past 5 years
• Not have received a U.S.-funded international exchange grant in the past 2 years
• Not be a Partners of the Americas employee

ONLY Applicants from Latin America and the Caribbean must be… ​

COVID-19 Policy All travelers participating in face-to-face activities must comply with all CDC, federal, and state/local regulations on COVID protocols. It should be remembered that the situation is fluid. Travelers should have a contingency plan in the event the exchange pivots to a virtual platform.  

Travelers must report any positive case to the Partners home office as soon as possible. An at home test or rapid test will suffice. For travelers concerned about obtaining a test, please consult with your host.    

Language Policy Applicants may apply in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. To ensure compliance with J-1 visa requirements for northbound participants from Latin America and the Caribbean, applicants should have the capacity to utilize English. An interview conducted in English will be incorporated as a part of the review process for candidates who present strong proposals.

What is a Travel Grant For An International Conference?

A travel grant to attend an international conference refers to financial assistance offered to individuals who desire to participate in conferences held outside their country of residence. In other words, it is the funding given to students to attend an international conference.

Attending academic conferences has become more prevalent, prompting the question: Why attend such events? 

Benefits of Attending An International Conference 

Presenting a paper allows participants to share their research, receive feedback, and cultivate future collaborations. Networking emerges as a vital aspect, providing opportunities to connect with experts globally, fostering knowledge expansion, and enhancing institutional goals. 

Publication is a common motive, with conference proceedings offering a platform for research publication and indexing, while selected papers may feature in affiliated journals. 

Socialization and cultural exchange play a role, in broadening perspectives and promoting cross-cultural learning. Additionally, conferences offer a break from academic duties, allowing participants to explore different cities worldwide. 

Staying updated on the latest developments in one's field, interacting with like-minded individuals, and gaining added research value further underscore the significance of attending academic conferences for both personal and professional growth.

When to start?

If you are planning to attend a conference, it must be planned for at least 4 months i.e. if you are planning to attend in March start now. Since most of us never went outside the country, it requires a lot of coordination. 

What do you need?

• A lot of patience and perseverance.
• Passport - I advise all to take a passport right away (tatkal is better) than to rush at the last minute. (I made the same mistake – it leads to unnecessary tension and pressure)
• Money is important but not more than willpower and patience

Top 16 Travel Grants For International Conference for Indian Students 2024 

Here are the top 16 travel grants offered by various institutions, governments, and foundations for Indian students to attend conferences, meetings, and symposia held abroad 

1. SJEF Travel Grant 2024

• The eligible applicants for this grant are research scholars, post-doctoral fellows (PDFs), and young scientists or faculty members under the age of 35 in the field of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.
• Additionally, young scientists pursuing or holding a Ph.D. and conducting research in Metallurgy and Materials Science within R&D labs are also eligible for consideration.
• There is no specific deadline mentioned for the application.

2. NBHM Travel Grant 2024

• The National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) offers financial assistance to mathematicians for participating in conferences, symposia, and summer schools both nationally and internationally.
• Application forms can be obtained from the NBHM website or by contacting the NBHM Office via email. It is essential to submit the filled application at least three months before the date your journey starts. 
• The application, along with the required documents, should be sent by post and scanned copies through email.
• NBHM Travel Grant does not cover living expenses but gives weight to support for local hospitality and longer stays provided by the program hosts.
• The grant can be used for two-way train or bus journeys , including taxi charges to the nearest airport. 
• Domestic and international air travel can be booked with authorized agencies, and any unspent balance must be returned to the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). 
• Original receipts, vouchers, and tickets for travel-related expenses, including health insurance and visa fees, must be preserved for later submission to the parent institution or NBHM.

3. ICMR-International Travel Grant Support for Non-ICMR Scientists 2024

• This grant provides financial support for non-ICMR biomedical scientists and researchers to attend international conferences, seminars, symposia, and workshops. 
• The scheme assists in presenting research papers, chairing sessions, and delivering lectures/keynote addresses. 
• It also supports young scientists, nurses, and paramedical staff attending training programs in priority areas. 
• The financial assistance covers economy-class airfare, airport tax, visa fees, and registration fees for young scientists, with a maximum grant of Rs 1,50,000 . 

Eligibility criteria:

• The applicant has to be a biomedical scientist engaged in R&D , 
• Have an accepted paper/abstract or an invitation to chair a session, and the conference theme aligning with ICMR's thrust areas. 
• Applicants must not have received ICMR financial assistance in the last three years. 
• The application should be submitted in the prescribed format through the proper channel at least two months before the event, along with the necessary documents.
• Reimbursement depends on when the applicant submits a detailed report, original air tickets, and boarding passes within two months of the conference. 

4. The Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR) Scheme Of Travel Grant 2024 

• The Indian Council of Philosophical Research offers a Travel Grant scheme to support scholars in philosophy and allied disciplines attending international academic events abroad.  
• Open to scholars of all ages and statuses, the scheme prioritizes faculty members in Indian colleges or universities , especially those in Philosophy. 
• Eligible activities include presenting research papers, chairing sessions, and delivering lectures at international conferences. 
• The expenses cover 50% of round-trip airfare by economy class from an Indian airport to the conference destination. 
• Applicants must submit a proposal with specified documents, including an acceptance letter from conference organizers, at least 90 days before the event . 
• The applicants must submit a report within a month of returning, including a certificate of attendance from the conference sponsors.

5. Indian National Science Academy (INSA) Travel Grant 2024

• The Indian National Science Academy (INSA) offers partial financial assistance to Indian scientists attending international conferences abroad. 
• The scheme operates in two categories: Category I for ISC/ICSU-sponsored conferences and Category II for non-ICSU conferences. 
• Category I supports scientists delivering plenary lectures or presenting accepted papers at ISC/ICSU conferences, prioritizing those with maintenance allowance and partial travel assistance.

• This grant supports Social and Cultural Functions in the United States and Travel Grants for scientific meetings. 
• The program is accessible to Cultural and Social Associations of Indian Origin and scientists from South Asia presenting papers at North American scientific meetings. 
• Peer-reviewed presentations are preferred, with no eligibility for poster presentations. 
• There are two types of Travel Grants: Community Organization Grants for small organizations hosting Indian artists or promoting local talent, and Academic Travel Grants for India-based researchers presenting papers at conferences in the U.S.
• Small grant requests are for early-career researchers, with awards up to $2,500 , supporting one-time projects or limited-duration activities. 
• The application process includes a letter explaining the project and a proposed budget. Council Grants aim to promote systemic change and capacity building for the full inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in Maryland communities.

7. CTEP - Guidelines for Travel Proposal 2024

• This grant provides financial aid to Indian scientists involved in biotechnology for presenting research papers at international conferences, seminars, and workshops held outside India . 
• The scheme provides reimbursement of actual return airfare in economy/excursion class. 
• Eligible applicants include active scientists below 50 years engaged in biotechnology research and development, investigators of DBT-supported projects, and others. 
• The scheme mandates online submission of proposals and has guidelines specifying authorized travel agents for air ticket purchases. 
• The application process includes the submission of various documents, including a letter of invitation, abstract, acceptance letter, and certificates. Funding for non-senior applicants is contingent on prior attendance at national conferences, and claims must be submitted within three months of the event.
• The reimbursement process requires the submission of post-trip documents, including a claim sheet, participation report, air ticket copies, and certificates of participation and awards.

8. AICTE Travel Grant 2024

• The Travel Grant for Faculty is designed to foster research and development in technical education by affording meritorious faculty members opportunities to engage at the international level and stay abreast of global developments in their specialized fields. 
• Eligible applicants must belong to an AICTE-approved institute or university department with a minimum of five years of existence, and the hosting department should be NBA-accredited. 
• The grant, amounting to Rs. 1.5 Lakh , is provided once every two years for three years. The scheme covers 100% reimbursement of expenses, and a three-member expert committee evaluates proposals. 
• Terms and conditions emphasize adherence to travel guidelines, including the use of Air India , and comprehensive documentation is required for reimbursement, facilitated through the applicant's parent institution. 

9. ACM India-IARCS Travel Grants 2024

• ACM India-IARCS travel grants provide partial financial support for travel to conferences and academic meetings in Computing Science in India and globally. 
• These grants target individuals affiliated with Indian academic institutions .
• Eligibility extends to students and faculty members, supporting travel expenses and conference fees, with a maximum grant limit of Rs 60,000 (max Rs 1,00,000).  
• The grants prioritize original research presentations at international conferences and aim to benefit graduate students while refraining from funding faculty members in well-established institutions like IITs and IISc more than once in 12 months . 
• The application process is temporarily delayed.

10. INSA-DAE/BRNS-CICS Travel Fellowship Programme 2024

• The scheme offers financial support for partial travel and registration expenses to scientists and researchers across diverse disciplines, including Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Medicine, Engineering, Space Science & Technology, and Computer Science and Engineering. 
• Preference is given to applicants demonstrating innovation and novelty in their work, those securing partial assistance from other sources, and young scientists meeting all criteria. 
• The funding agencies involved include the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)/Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences (BRNS), and the Centre for International Co-operation in Science (CICS).

11. CSIR Travel Grant Scheme Brochure 2024

• The scheme aims to provide financial support to young Indian researchers, including Ph.D. students, research associates, and non-regular researchers
• The expenses cover full reimbursement of actual airfare from the nearest airport in India to the event venue and back. 
• Eligibility criteria include active involvement in research and development, a minimum postgraduate qualification, and publication of papers in refereed journals. 
• Applicants should not have received travel support from CSIR in the last three years.
• The application process involves submitting necessary documents, including a letter of acceptance from organizers and a commitment letter from other funding agencies, if applicable. 
• Reimbursement claims must be submitted within two months of completing the event, with the process facilitated through authorized travel agents and adherence to government-approved guidelines.

12. Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation Travel Grant 2024

• The grant is exclusively for registered Ph.D. candidates at Indian universities in Humanities and Social Sciences , providing financial assistance for short-term visits abroad to gather materials, utilize facilities, and consult experts. 
• Eligible applicants must be registered Ph.D. candidates for two to three years, possess first-class degrees at the Bachelor's and Master's levels, and be born after January 1, 1988, with Indian citizenship and current residency in India. 
• The application process involves submitting a form, a sample of written work, evidence of communication with the chosen institution abroad, letters of reference, and more.
• The grant covers travel allowance, maintenance expenses, funds for materials, and a health allowance, with the candidate undergoing a two-tier selection process involving short-listing and interviews with experts.

13. IBRO Travel Grants 2024

• The IBRO Travel Grant program aims to support early-career Ph.D. students and post-doctoral fellows in the field of neuroscience by providing funding for their participation in international neuroscience meetings and events scheduled for 2024. 
• The expenses cover travel and local expenses associated with attending the specified conferences or meetings. 
• Preference will be given to applicants from less developed and underfunded countries , with a commitment to ensuring gender and regional diversity. 
• Eligible candidates should clarify how their participation in the designated event will impact their careers. 
• The program is open to neuroscience students pursuing a Ph.D. or early postdoctoral fellows within five years of starting their postdoc. 
• Applicants residing in the U.S. or Canada are not eligible . Grant recipients are responsible for their own registration and abstract submission. 
• Awards will be disbursed upon confirmation of attendance after the event with a maximum grant award of 1,800 EUR . 

14. Indian Institute Of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) Travel Grant 2024

• The institute provides financial support to students for attending international conferences/symposiums through two types of assistance: Financial Assistance and Refundable Advance . 
• Financial Assistance is granted to research scholars based on approved guidelines, with support varying for conferences in different regions. 
• Refundable Advance is provided to scholars facing pre-conference financial difficulties, against sanction letters from supporting organizations. 
• Eligibility is limited to students in doctoral programs. The quality of the paper is a key criterion for selection. 
• Applicants are allowed only one form of support before the conference.
• To apply , scholars must follow the application process, including approval from the International Conference Funding Committee. 
• After obtaining financial assistance, scholars must submit a report on participation and settle the granted amount upon return. Failure to attend requires an immediate refund.

15. Researcher Development and Travel Grant 2024

• The Researcher Development and Travel Grants provided by the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation are available to Ph.D.  Students and early-career scientists in both industry and academia, support activities that enhance their research careers. 
• These activities can be virtual or in-person , such as presenting at conferences, attending training courses, or organizing scientific meetings. 
• The grants aim to assist those with caring responsibilities or additional needs through Grants for Carers and Accessibility Grants. 
• Eligibility includes being an RSC member and either an active Ph.D. student or a researcher in the chemical sciences within 10 years of leaving full-time education. Career breaks, such as parental leave, will be considered. 
• The grants offer financial support of up to £500 for activities like conference participation, researcher development projects, or networking. 
• Applicants are cautioned about predatory conferences, and the application process involves providing details on the activity, its benefits, and a declaration of support from a supervisor or department head. 
• The application deadlines and decision timelines vary for different rounds throughout the year.

16. Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds Travel Grant 2024      

• The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) offers travel grants of up to three months to MD and Ph.D. students , as well as postdoctoral researchers globally, supporting experimental projects in basic biomedical research. 
• The grants facilitate short-term research stays or attendance at practical courses relevant to ongoing projects in Europe or overseas. 
• The program encourages junior scientists to acquire new methods through practical courses or laboratory experiences. 
• The expenses cover travel, lodging, and course fees, but not living expenses, local travel, visa, or insurance. For those from low-income countries, additional funds for living costs may be granted. 
• Eligible applicants include Ph.D. students, medical students during their doctoral thesis, postdocs, and graduates applying for a Ph.D. project abroad. 
• Travel grants are directed at European citizens working in Europe and overseas, as well as non-European citizens conducting projects in Europe or planning to work in Europe.
• The grants are intended for junior scientists based on the time of receiving their university entrance qualification , with specific criteria for Ph.D. students, graduates, and postdocs. 
• The grants exclude stays of more than three months , conference attendance without practical training, clinical electives, and certain types of research. 
• The application process involves an online application form and PDF uploads, including details about the research project, publications, examination certificates, letters of acceptance and recommendation, and evidence of expenses. 
• Applications must be submitted in English, between six weeks and six months before the planned departure date.

Essentials To Take Care of While Traveling Abroad

• Always carry your passport and cash along with you. Do not leave in the hotel room.
• Never hand your passport to any unauthorized person except immigration officers at the Airport
• If you are changing two or more flights from different airlines, then always make sure at the airline counter that your baggage is checked in. In many chances, they may miss your baggage in transit airport and you’ll have to struggle for a day or two.
• Do not exchange foreign currency from airports or nearby places or Thomas Cook.
• Always take it beforehand from SBI or other banks or else you will lose a lot of money in exchange. (I got IGCAR advance money just a few minutes before departure and exchanged it at Chennai airport resulting in a loss of nearly Rs.2000)
• Better to carry a map of the city/locality and also routes. A language dictionary is necessary if you are going to a non-English country]
• You can avail of the international roaming facility on your mobile (Airtel, Vodafone) if you are staying there for a longer time. Incoming will be free to you and it will be a local call tariff to the caller (See the respective website)
• Keep all original bills of expenses met during the travel

Visa and Immigration

• Check the website and enquire with the Visa issuing authority like Embassy or VFS on which Visa you require – student or tourist, etc.
• Some countries require travel insurance, health certificates, etc.
• Also, take note of things not to be carried out in the country

On the flight and at the Airport

• Most agencies require you to travel only by Air-India flights. If the destination is not connected by Air India then you have to take an Air India flight to the nearest place and take some other airline to the conference city or nearest airport
• Keep the toll-free phone number of your airline for emergency
• You can book your ticket with the travel agency without giving money. Only if you confirm it, then you have to pay. (you may not get the tickets by the time you get permission from DAE and travel grants from other agencies)
• Always keep one set of dress in your hand baggage – it will be highly useful if your baggage is delayed
• By chance, if your baggage is delayed/missed write a complaint along with your hotel address at the airline counter in the airport and demand compensation. They will give some cash and later they will also deliver the baggage at your hotel (My baggage was delayed during transit and I spent my pocket money to buy a dress in Australia – I did not know about compensation then)
• Do not carry any liquids in hand baggage – water, perfume, etc. during flight travel.
• Carry light and good baggage. If your bag/handle tears in handling or it is very heavy it leads to fines.
• You can ask for second-time food/drinks on flights – they won’t mind

Conference/symposium

• Carry a laptop if you have one. Most conference venues and airports have wireless internet facilities or internet ports. Also, you can make a short presentation if you are explaining your work to someone
• Better to carry your CV, published papers, and visiting card
• You are the official representative of your University /Centre and our country at the conference - Always remember that

2024 international travel grants open for faculty and graduate students

LAWRENCE — KU International Affairs is accepting proposals and applications for travel grants that support faculty and graduate student research and collaboration abroad. 

The deadline for submitting proposals and applications is March 6. Grant recipients will be notified by the end of April. 

Faculty travel grants will support international travel expenses for interdisciplinary, humanistic research projects, as well as academic collaborations in Asia and Latin America. Travel grants for graduate students support internationally focused academic or training opportunities and preliminary dissertation field activities in Latin America and Africa.

The most compelling proposals will align with  Jayhawks Rising’s  strategic priorities of expanding KU research and its influence, furthering student success, and promoting healthy and vibrant communities. 

Given out annually by KUIA, the international travel awards help foster the international orientation, expertise and outreach of KU while also enriching students’ studies. 

2024 Faculty Travel Grants

The International Travel Fund for Humanistic Research  supports KU faculty pursuing international interdisciplinary humanistic research abroad. Eligible faculty may receive up to $2,000 to cover airfare and related travel expenses.

The Latin America Fund , formerly the KU-UCR Exchange Support Fund, provides up to $2,000 for faculty research projects requiring travel to Latin America. Additionally, it provides up to $4,000 in travel funding for the development or maintenance of institutional exchanges, partnerships and academic collaborations between KU and counterparts at selected postsecondary institutions. The fund prioritizes helping departments and schools initiate or build relationships with peer institutions of higher learning in Latin America.

The South, Southeast, and East Asia Fund , formerly the CIK Fund, provides up to $2,000 for faculty research projects requiring travel to countries within Asia. Additionally, it provides up to $4,000 for the development or maintenance of institutional exchanges, partnerships and academic collaborations between KU and counterparts at selected postsecondary institutions. The fund prioritizes helping departments and schools initiate or build relationships with peer institutions of higher learning in South, Southeast and East Asia. 

2024 Graduate Student Grants

The International Enhancement Grant  provides up to $1,000 in travel expenses for graduate students to pursue relevant semester or summerlong internationally focused academic or training opportunities in Africa or Latin America that enhance their degree programs at KU. This grant supports directed, off-campus international activities in areas that do not duplicate opportunities or coursework available at KU.

The Pre-Dissertation Travel Grant  provides up to $1,000 in travel expenses to graduate students to support six- to eight-week trips for preliminary dissertation field activities, such as exploring potential research sites, archives and other research resources; establishing institutional affiliations; and identifying and meeting with local scholars and contacts, as appropriate, that take place in Latin America or Africa .

If you’re planning for a study abroad adventure, chances are you’re starting to get organized and assess what needs to be done ahead of your travels. And one of the most important steps: Exploring your study abroad scholarship and grant options .  

Let’s dive in as we discuss two of the best CIEE travel grants for students like yourself and learn more about how you can make your study abroad dream a reality!  

GAIN Travel Grant  

CIEE’s GAIN Travel Grant is part of our need-based scholarship offerings based on students’ Estimated Family Contribution (EFC)* from their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at their enrolled institution.  

This travel grant helps students with their travel costs to and from their study abroad or internship program destination ( up to $1,500 for semester and quarter programs , and up to $500 for summer and single block programs ).  

Any student with an EFC below 10,000 is guaranteed to receive this grant, while those over 10,000, will still be considered post-deadline. Important to note: The deadline for this grant is October 15 for spring programs and April 1 for summer and fall programs.   

The steps to apply for the GAIN Travel Grant are super simple:  

• Step 1: Students upload their FAFSA Student Aid Report 
• Step 2: Submit a CIEE Scholarships and Grants application by October for spring programs/April 1 for summer and fall programs

This is an incredible opportunity for students to receive some extra assistance with their travel costs!  

Trailblazer Grant  

Also part of our travel grants is the Trailblazer Grant, which is considered in our third category of scholarship offerings, deemed “other,” based on specific study abroad programs. This particular grant is awarded to students who travel on a new 2024 spring , summer , or fall study abroad program with CIEE.  

CIEE offers many qualifying spring, summer, and fall programs for this specific travel grant that span several countries including:  

• England  
• Estonia  
• France  
• Scotland  
• Italy  
• Spain  
• Greater China

Students may receive up to $1,500 in the form of a flight voucher for their eligible CIEE program and, like our other scholarship and grant options, the steps to applying are straightforward. Once you’ve decided on your new 2024 spring, summer, or fall program, all you’ll need to do is the following:

• Step 2: Select one of our qualifying programs

While the application process for our travel grants and travel scholarships is relatively straightforward, we’re sure you have some questions. And we don’t blame you! It can seem like a complicated process and it’s all brand-new information.  

We’ve compiled some of our most frequently asked questions about our travel grants and answered them!  

What is a travel grant?  

Starting with the very basics, a grant is a non-refundable endowment given by an individual, organization, or government department for a specific purpose linked to public benefit. Travel grants – in the case of studying abroad – are awarded to students from a non-profit organization, (that’s us: CIEE), to assist students in their international education. And the public benefit is robust – creating global citizens who will make the world a better place (that’s you)!  

It’s important to note that travel grants aren’t just awarded to students. For example, researchers can apply for travel grants to expand their studies, and many other instances.  

Do scholarships cover travel expenses?  

Yes! Some of our travel scholarships cover travel expenses, but some are specific to program fees. For example, while the GAIN Travel Grant helps cover travel costs, the Gilman Go Global Grant helps cover semester program fees. Take a close look at each of our offerings on our scholarships and grants page to best understand what type of aid covers specific aspects of your study abroad program and travels.

How do I ask for travel funding?  

As the question implies, simply asking for travel funding is perfectly acceptable!  

We always have CIEE staff available to help point you in the right direction. As we’ve mentioned, exploring our scholarships and grants page is a great place to start, as well as consulting with your on-campus study abroad office; they might have some additional travel grants and scholarships related to your specific institution. Your academic advisor might even be able to provide some helpful resources.  

What’s important to note is that there are a lot of different places and people to look to for help with travel funding, and CIEE is another wonderful resource to support you and help make your study abroad program affordable and accessible.  

How to apply for a travel grant?  

As we’ve mentioned, applying for a travel grant with CIEE is simple! On your CIEE application, make sure to fill out the scholarship and grants portion. And if you have any questions, we’re happy to help!

Due to unexpected FAFSA delays during the transition, CIEE will accept the 2023-2024 FAFSA (EFC) or the 2024-2025 FAFSA (SAI) for Fall 2024. For students who provide the 2023-2024 FAFSA (EFC), we will continue to guarantee GAIN Travel Grants to those with EFCs of 10,000 or less. For students who provide the 2024-2025 FAFSA (SAI), we will guarantee GAIN Travel Grants to Pell Eligible students. Applications must received by the April 1st deadline for the guarantee. ANNUAL CONGRESS OF THE EUROPEAN ASSOCIATION FOR CANCER RESEARCH

We're awarding Travel Grants to support members of the European Association for Cancer Research who need financial assistance to attend the Congress and present their work as an oral or poster presentation. Each EACR Travel Grant includes a free registration and funds to support travel and accommodation costs. 

We have two eligibility categories:

• Student and Early Career EACR members with less than 4-years postdoctoral experience
• EACR members who are based in a country with a low- or middle-income economy

There is no maximum amount you can apply for, but we expect applicants to choose the best value travel and accommodation possible, and we cannot guarantee that we will always be able to cover the full amount that applicants have applied for.

Eligibility

• You are a current EACR member. Find out more. The EACR aims to be inclusive: we may be able to offer reduced membership fees for researchers from low/lower middle-income economies (as defined by the World Bank) or who have extenuating circumstances. To ask about this please contact our membership team.
• Travel Grants are targeted at members who, without additional funding, would not be able to attend the congress. Please consider your financial need before applying and demonstrate it in your application.
• Applicants must have submitted an abstract for the Congress on the Congress website.

You must also meet one of the criteria below:

• Student and Early Career EACR members with less than four years postdoctoral experience. Exceptions may be made in the case of members who have had a professional break, such as illness or parental leave.

• Make sure you submit an abstract for the Congress before 23:59 CET on 04 March.

Travel Grants

On a competitive basis, IEEE ICC 2024 offers a number of grants to students and to individuals who are financially limited. To be eligible for a student travel grant, the applicant must be registered for the conference, a student, and a co-author of an accepted peer-reviewed paper for the conference. Additionally, a Conference Travel Grant (CTG) is available for applicants who are unable to obtain sufficient funding due to, for instance, being from a country with a low GDP.  The grants are from: IEEE ComSoc, US National Science Foundation (NSF), Women in Communications Engineering (WICE), and IEEE Conference Travel. These grants encourage participation by students or individuals who would normally find it difficult to attend. Women, minorities, individuals from low GDP countries, beginning graduate students, and first time ICC attendees, are especially encouraged to apply. Postdocs, faculty, or other senior research personnel may not apply for a student grant.

CONFERENCE TRAVEL GRANTS

Conference Travel Grants (CTG) is a newly established IEEE ComSoc program that provides partial financial support for participation in IEEE ComSoc conferences. 

APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for a CTG at ICC 2024, an applicant must be:

1.    A ComSoc member 2.    An ICC 2024 participant; and 3.    Unable to obtain sufficient substantial funding from their own institution or other sources, and forced to cover most of or all the associated expenses with their own funds

Priority will be given to:

• Authors of accepted ICC 2024 Conference Papers
• Presenters of accepted talks at ICC 2024
• Those residing in a country with a low Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita

HOW TO APPLY FOR CTG

The application can be accessed in EDAS by selecting “Travel Grants” at the top of the page and then selecting “IEEE ICC’24 - Conference Travel Grants”.  Alternatively, the application can be accessed directly by clicking this  link . 

The application will ask questions related to the eligibility criteria.  A letter of recommendation is NOT required for the Conference Travel Grant.

Before submitting the application, applicants are advised to update their EDAS profiles so that it includes their current affiliation (including the location of the university they are attending) and their IEEE ComSoc membership information.

IEEE COMSOC STUDENT GRANTS

IEEE ICC 2024 offers ComSoc grants to students who have co-authored an accepted peer-reviewed paper for the conference. 

1.    Each applicant must be a Student Member or Graduate Student Member of the IEEE Communications Society at the time he/she applies for the grant;

2.    Each applicant must be a co-author of an accepted paper in ICC 2024 and present it at the conference;

3.    Each applicant must be a full-time student registered toward a Bachelor, Masters, or PhD degree in computer science, engineering or related field in a college or university when submitting the application;

4.    During the expense reimbursement stage, the student applicant must show the proof of having registered to attend ICC 2024.

A student who is awarded a student grant must register, attend, and present their paper at the conference. Payment will only be made to grant recipients who submit the expense report (with receipts for expenses over US$25) within 45 days after the conference. More details will be provided to the students who are selected to receive a ComSoc Student Grant.

NSF STUDENT TRAVEL GRANTS

IEEE ICC 2024 offers NSF travel grants to students on a competitive basis. The NSF travel grants help promote diversity among the conference attendees. The NSF grants especially encourages applicants that are: 1) women and minorities and 2) beginning graduate students, or (3) first-time ICC attendees. The awarded student must attend in person .

1.    Each applicant must be a) a qualified full-time student (graduate or undergraduate) enrolled in a US-based institution or b) a US citizen enrolled in a foreign institution coming to the US-based conference;

2.    Each applicant must be a co-author of an accepted paper in ICC 2024 (main program or workshop);

3.    Each applicant must be a full-time student registered toward a Bachelor, Masters, or Ph.D. degree in computer science, engineering or related field in a college or university when submitting the application;

4.    This grant particularly encourages women, minorities, beginning graduate students, and first time ICC attendees to apply.

IMPORTANT NOTE

All flights made on an NSF travel grant award must be either on a US-flag carrier or ticketed through a US carrier (e.g., codeshare flights on international airlines). A student who is awarded a student travel grant must register, attend, and present the paper at the conference (the student should attend in person, not remotely). During the expense reimbursement stage, the student applicant must show proof of having registered to attend ICC 2024 along with photos showing participation in ICC events such as presenting papers or attending technical symposiums. Payment will be made only to grant recipients who submit an expense report with all the receipts no more than 45 days after the conference. More details will be provided to the students who are selected to receive an NSF Student Travel Grant.

IEEE WICE STUDENT GRANTS

ICC 2024 offers WICE grants to students who have co-authored an accepted peer-reviewed paper for the conference and are members of ComSoc’s Women in Communications Engineerin g   committee. 

1.    Each applicant must be a Student Member or Graduate Student Member of both the IEEE Communications Society and IEEE WICE at the time he/she applies for the grant;

2.    To be qualified for the funding from WICE, the awardee is required to attend the WICE events at IEEE ICC 2024;

3.    Each applicant must be a co-author of an accepted paper in ICC 2024 and present it at the conference;

4.    Each applicant must be a full-time student registered toward a Bachelor, Masters, or PhD degree in computer science, engineering or related field in a college or university when submitting the application;

5.    During the expense reimbursement stage, the student applicant must show the proof of having registered to attend ICC 2024.

A student who is awarded a WICE student grant must register, attend, and present their paper at the conference. Payment will only be made to grant recipients who submit the expense report (with receipts for expenses over US $25) within 45 days after the conference. More details will be provided to the students who are selected to receive a WICE Student Grant.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A STUDENT GRANT

IEEE ICC 2024 is using a single application for all three grants.  The application can be accessed in EDAS by selecting “Travel Grants” at the top of the page or by clicking this link . 

The application will ask which of the three grants you are eligible for and would like to be considered, if you have previously attended a conference organized by ComSoc (including ICC and GLOBECOM conferences), your academic level, and number of years in your current program.  The application includes a field for you to enter a short statement of interest.

A letter of recommendation is required.  The letter should be from the student’s advisor or co-author, and should verify that the applicant is a student in good standing.

Before submitting the application, applicants are advised to update their EDAS profiles so that it includes their current affiliation (including the location of the university they are attending), their IEEE membership information, and their gender.

The IBRO Travel Grant program aims to foster neuroscience research by providing support to early-career Ph.D. students and post-doctoral fellows from diverse geographical and scientific areas who wish to participate in international neuroscience meetings and events taking place between July and December, 2024.

About the Program

The grant is to be used towards travel and local expenses while attending the proposed conference or meeting. Priority will be given to applicants from under-resourced and less well-funded countries in combination with efforts to ensure both gender and regional diversity.

Applicants are encouraged to provide a comprehensive explanation of the potential impact that their participation in the specified meeting or conference will have on their career trajectory. This may include detailing how the knowledge, insights, and networking opportunities gained during the event will contribute to their professional growth and development.

Application dates: 01 April – 30 April, 2024

Maximum grant amount: For Neuroscience 2024 : 2,500 USD All other meetings/events: 1,800 EUR

Who Can Apply?

Eligible applicants are:

• PhD neuroscience students or early-career postdoctoral fellows (maximum 5 years from the start of the postdoc)  interested in attending events taking place between July and December, 2024.
• first authors in the abstract they apply with.

• the maximum grant amount that you can request if you are applying for any event other than Neuroscience 2024  is 1,800 EUR.
• the eventual granted amount may not necessarily be the same as the amount requested.
• a minimum of one letter of reference is required but two references are ideal.

IBRO-SfN Travel Grants

• Dedicated funding is being provided by SfN to support a number of grantees from the Asia-Pacific, Africa, Latin America and Pan Europe regions to attend Neuroscience 2024 .
• The maximum grant amount that you can request if you are applying for a travel grant to Neuroscience 2024 is 2500 USD.
• Applicants not funded through this opportunity may still be considered for a travel grant with IBRO funds, but under the 1,800 EUR maximum grant amount.

Regional Eligibility Requirements

Applicants residing in:

• one of the Asia-Pacific, Latin America, or Europe regions are eligible to apply for events anywhere in the world.
• the US or Canada are eligible to apply for any event other than Neuroscience 2024 (the SfN annual meeting).
• the Africa region are only eligible to apply for Neuroscience 2024 .

Limited travel grants will be offered to qualified applications for attendance at the 2024 APSA Annual Meeting.

• To be considered for a travel grant, it is required that individuals be presenting at the Annual Meeting.  First-time attendees and those on the job market will receive priority consideration.
• Qualified applicants include:  U.S. graduate students, international graduate students studying in the U.S., unemployed members, international scholars, community college faculty, contingent faculty, unemployed faculty, APSA Status Committee members, and any faculty member who has been furloughed or experienced a reduction in available research funds from their college or university.
• Travel grants can cover  costs such as mileage for attendees who travel to association events by car or plane tickets for attendees who arrive by air.  Grants can also cover hotels, meals, and conference related cab fare.
• All grant recipients will be reimbursed for expenses after the conclusion of the relevant association event.

The deadline to apply is April 30, 2024.

Eligibility:.

To be eligible for grant, you must: 

• Maintain your APSA membership through the date of the conference for which you are receiving travel grant funding
• Be presenting at the 2024 APSA Annual Meeting
• Reside more than 60 miles from the conference location – you are not eligible for a travel grant if you live within 60 miles of the conference site
• APSA will not cover expenses that are not submitted without an itemized receipt

Travel Grant Use

A travel grant from APSA can cover the following costs:

• Ticket and cab fare:  Economy bus, train, and plane tickets are covered, conference related cab fare around the conference city is also covered
• Mileage is reimbursable at the 2024 IRS standard mileage of 67 cents per mile traveled
• You must also demonstrate that the cost of your mileage is less than the cost of a flight
• As proof, APSA accepts a printed copy of the cost of a flight to the conference city on the days that you plan to travel and printed directions from sites like Google Maps as documentation
• Hotels:  The cost of a stay in a hotel, hostel, or other rented lodging such as Airbnb during the conference is covered
• Meals:  The cost of meals during the conference is covered

An APSA travel grant  does not , however, cover any of the following costs:

• Business or first-class tickets
• Rental cars
• Gasoline:  Receipts for gas are not accepted – for APSA to cover the cost of a car trip to the conference, you must provide your mileage using the instructions above
• Registration or APSA Membership:  APSA cannot apply grant funds toward the cost of a membership or registration for the Annual Meeting

The U.S. Economic Development Administration’s (EDA) Travel, Tourism, and Outdoor Recreation program invested $750 million in  American Rescue Plan  funding to support communities across the country whose economies were hard hit by damage to these sectors from the COVID-19 pandemic. With funding going to every state and territory across 185 awards, EDA’s investments are rebuilding the travel and tourism sector and creating a more equitable, competitive, and resilient industry.

The Travel, Tourism, and Outdoor Recreation program is divided into two components:

• State Tourism Grants:  $510 million in direct awards to help states quickly invest in marketing, infrastructure, workforce and other projects to rejuvenate safe leisure, business and international travel.
• Competitive Grants:  $240 million to help communities that have been hardest hit by challenges facing the travel, tourism, and outdoor recreation sectors to invest in infrastructure, workforce, or other projects to support the recovery of the industry and economic resilience of the community in the future.

Each state or territory is utilizing its directly allocated funds to engage in activities that best support their travel, tourism, and outdoor recreation sectors. These activities include but are not limited to workforce training, new construction or upgrades to existing tourism infrastructure, tourism marketing and promotion, and tourism-related economic planning. The competitive grant program is distributed across 126 awards to support communities across the country as they rebuild and strengthen their travel, tourism, and outdoor recreation sectors. The competitive funding is expected to generate $1.1 billion in private investment and to create or save 10,291 jobs , according to grantee estimates. This program was designed to prioritize equity, and as a result, more than 50% of competitive awards are expected to directly benefit historically underserved communities and populations. In addition, $29.3 million across 12 awards is supporting coal communities and $21.2 million across 9 awards is supporting Indigenous communities.

EACR-AACR Basic and Translational Research Conference In partnership with IACR (Irish Association for Cancer Research)

The travel grant application deadline has now passed..

We are pleased to provide Travel Grants to help EACR members who need financial assistance to attend the conference and present their work as an oral or poster presentation. Each Travel Grant includes a free registration and funds to support travel and accommodation costs. There is no maximum amount you can apply for, but we expect applicants to choose the best value travel and accommodation possible, and we cannot guarantee that we will always be able to cover the full amount that applicants have applied for.

Eligibility for an EACR Travel Grant

Applicants must have submitted an abstract for the conference through the conference website.

Travel Grants are targeted at individuals who, without additional funding, would not be able to attend the conference. Please consider your financial need before applying and demonstrate it in your application.

You must also meet one of the two eligibility categories below:

Student and Early Career EACR members with less than four years postdoctoral experience. Exceptions may be made in the case of members who have had a professional break, such as illness or parental leave.

EACR members working or studying in the field of cancer research, who are based in a country with a low- or middle-income economy, as defined by the World Bank. Click here and scroll down to see the current list on the World Bank website.

IACR Registration Bursaries

The IACR is offering up to 100 registration bursaries of €175 to help researchers who need financial assistance to attend the conference and present their work as an oral or poster presentation. Applicants must be early career IACR members based at an institution on the island of Ireland.

APAO Young Ophthalmologists (YO) Travel Grants

The APAO Young Ophthalmologists (YO) Travel Grants support up to 5 residents in training or fellows in the Asia-Pacific region. Each successful applicant will receive US$1,000 if they live outside the host country of the APAO 2024 Congress, whereas those who live in Indonesia will receive US$300.

YO Travel Grants are open to young ophthalmologists including residents, trainees, and fellow ophthalmologists* from a developing country and whose abstracts (Free Paper, Poster, e-Poster, Video, or Instruction Course) have been accepted by the APAO 2024 Scientific Program Committee.

* Only applicants who register for the APAO 2024 Congress as ‘young ophthalmologists (under 40 years’ old)’ are eligible to apply for the YO Travel Grants.

Application and Selection

Eligible applicants can apply for both types of Travel Grants at the same time, but he/ she can only receive one Travel Grant through the selection process.

In addition to the funding for travels, recipients of the Travel Grants will also enjoy free Congress Registration and invitation to the Congress Cultural Party .

Interested candidates should complete the online application now available on the congress system at  http://congress.apaophth.org/ until September 13, 2023 . The application will close at 23:59 on September 13, 2023 (GMT+8) .

Selection will be made by the APAO Travel Grants Committees and the results will be announced in November/December 2023.

GSA International offers travel grants to help support the participation of international scientists and students at GSA Connects 2024 in Anaheim. Travel grant funds are limited; grants will not cover the full cost to attend the meeting but are intended to help offset the combined cost of registration, housing, and travel. Applicants will be notified about their status (successful or not) by 15 April 2024.

Christopher I. and Irene N. Chalokwu Travel Grant

The Christopher I. and Irene N. Chalokwu Travel Grants are awarded to help support undergraduate or graduate student travel for students in Africa, working on any aspect of African Geology, to attend and present their research at GSA’s annual meeting. Successful applicants must reside in Africa. Travel grant funds are limited; grants will not cover the full cost to attend the meeting but are intended to help offset the combined cost of registration, housing, and travel. Applicants will be notified about their status (successful or not) by 15 April 2024 .

Travel Grants

ISCA and Interspeech 2024 are jointly offering a limited number of grants to students and early career scientists in order to support their participation in the Interspeech 2024 conference.

Important Dates

• Application Portal Opens: Thursday, 6th June 2024
• Application Portal Closes: Friday, 14th June 2024 (Midnight, CET)
• Early Registration Ends: Wednesday, 19th June 2024
• Notifications Sent: Friday, 28th June 2024

Please note in order to be eligible for a grant, you will need to be the (co-)author of an accepted paper at Interspeech 2024.

Important Registration Information

As grant notifications will be made after the final paper upload and paper presenter registration deadline and the early bird registration deadline, applicants should register as required by the conference to avail of the early bird rate.

 Upon registration, please check the box labeled “I have applied for a travel grant” on the personal details page, along with selecting your preferred form of payment. By checking this option, you will be eligible for the early registration fee, and your credit card will not be charged.

Once the Travel Grant notifications are made, the registration fee will be waived for successful applicants and the conference secretariat will adjust your registration and reissue your confirmation email.

Unsuccessful applicants will be advised on Friday, 28th June 2024 and have until Friday, 5th July 2024 to make payment at the early bird rate. If they no longer wish to attend the conference, we ask that they notify the conference secretariat immediately at   [email protected] .

The grants for participation in Interspeech 2024 will be administered by ISCA.

The purpose of the grants is to support a diversity of both scientific topics at the conference, as well as a wide representation of the international speech science and technology community. Applicants from all countries are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to applicants from under-represented segments of our community, both geographically and otherwise.

Application Process

Applicants must complete an online application form..

Applications require the following supporting documents to be uploaded when completing the online application form:

i) A copy of the paper(s), submitted to, and accepted by the conference ii) The letter of acceptance of paper(s) you will present at the conference iii) Your curriculum vitae including a complete list of publications iv) A recommendation letter (or email) by your supervisor or the Director of your laboratory

Applications can be submitted between Thursday, 6th June 2024, and the application deadline at midnight CET, Friday, 14th June 2024 (Midnight, CET) .

The application must be submitted using the online application form . 

Notification of acceptance or otherwise will be sent to applicants by Friday, 28th June 2024.

The deadline for grant applications is strict, and applicants are encouraged to start preparing the required documents early.

Successful applicants will receive a variable grant amount, a part of which will be used to pay their appropriate conference registration fee, the balance will be paid directly to the applicant at the conference. The variable grant will be allotted, as per the following:

• 500 Euro for grantees whose affiliation is from the same continent where Interspeech is being organized.
• 1000 Euro for grantees whose affiliation is from other continents (applications from less-represented countries are also considered).
• 2500 Euro for grantees whose affiliation is from less-represented and low-income countries.

For example, if you are a student and not an ISCA member, the grant may cover early student registration including 1-year ISCA student membership. Any remaining balance can be applied towards accommodation and other tourist services. The reimbursement will be processed after the conference upon submission of your receipts. Note: As the conference secretariat and the official travel agent, Ortra is pleased to offer assistance in purchasing your ticket. If you opt for this service, you will be required to provide to the Ortra with your travel dates, preferred airport, and a copy of your passport. Ortra will then send you the itinerary for confirmation before proceeding with ticketing.

If you are awarded one of the grants, the grant registration will also cover one paper for which you are (co-)author.

Travel Grants

General information

To facilitate participants from lower and middle income countries who are unable to raise the necessary funds to attend 8 th WCRI, a limited number of grants is available to subsidize travel and accommodation costs.

Travel grant applications should not be made later than 16 October 2023 and be accompanied by a proof of citizenship, a proof of work or student status, a short CV, a letter of support, and an explanation of your motivation. The process is complete

Flights and accommodation for travel grant recipients will be covered by the grant and will be booked by the conference organiser. Registration fee will be waived for all travel grant recipients. Please note that airport transfers are not included.

Applicants for travel grants must be a citizen of or have their main affiliation in a lower or middle income country and explain convincingly why a travel grant is needed.

Recipients must be the presenting author of an accepted abstract for oral or poster presentation.

Only complete travel grant applications will be considered. Applicants will be informed of the decision  by 15 February 2024 latest. All notifications will be sent to the email address provided on the travel grant form. The decisions of the WCRI Travel Grant Review Committee are final.

Community Grants

• The SSA Community Grants Program accepts applications to support small scientific conferences, workshops and events that provide our members and future seismologists with opportunities for training, learning and networking.

Our History

In 1958, President Eisenhower and Premier Khrushchev formally agreed to exchanges between students, teachers, and researchers , setting the stage for IREX's predecessor organization, the Inter-University Council on Travel Grants (IUCTG). In 1968, leading U.S. universities established IREX (International Research & Exchanges Board)  with support from the Ford Foundation, the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), the Social Science Research Council (SSRC), and the U.S. Department of State.

According to IREX's founding documents, a centralized organization was needed to "act with authority on both sides of the Atlantic, solicit and attract sufficient funds, be immune to political pressures from all sides, and fulfill the sensitive role of clearinghouse for information." The immediate goal of IREX was to administer exchange programs with the Soviet Union and Eastern European countries. While the founding proposal cite d an "immediate mandate" focusing on that region, it also ma d e clear that "there is no disposition to limit IREX's jurisdiction geographically."

Headquarters: IREX's original headquarters were in New York City. In 1986, IREX relocated to Princeton, New Jersey, and had a close working relationship with Princeton University. By relocating to Washington, DC, in 1992 —where it remains today— IREX's primarily academic identity began to transform into a more development-focused entity. This also put IREX in close proximity to other development organizations , embassies, and policymakers .

Country offices: IREX opened its first country office in Moscow in 1989. Today, IREX has 20 country offices throughout Africa, Europe and Eurasia, the Middle East and North Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

Date of incorporation/nonprofit status: For nearly 30 years, IREX operated under the auspices of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). IREX became independently incorporated in 1991 and received its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status in 1995.

End of the Cold War: When the Soviet Union dissolved, Russia and the former Soviet Republics faced a wide range of challenges as they became newly independent countries. With deep experience and relationships in the region, IREX was well-placed to help these countries transition their civil society, education, and information and media systems .

• Increasing information access to improve prosperity: To help develop the struggling economies of many former Soviet Republics, in the mid-1990s IREX ran the U.S. Information Agency’s Internet Access and Training Program (IATP), which connected millions of people in Eurasia to the internet for the first time through libraries and other civic institutions.
• Strengthening institutions to serve people effectively: To help civil society organizations effectively serve the diverse populations they represent, IREX encouraged collaboration between U.S. and Eurasian organizations. For example, through the Institutional Partnerships Program (IPP ), IREX helped forge dozens of partnerships between Russian, Ukrainian , and American NGOs , business industry groups, and universities to collaborate on joint projects to deliver more efficient health care, education, and public works .
• Fostering vibrant information and media to hold governments accountable: To provide citizens with credible information at a critical time of reform, IREX helped build independent and financially stable media and information systems throughout Eurasia. For example, during Slobodan Milosevic’s attempted crackdown on democracy and press freedom, IREX provided unwavering support to radio B-92, which continued to broadcast vital information to help citizens make informed decisions and hold government accountable. 

Going global: In response to evolving global needs, IREX’s senior management made the strategic decision to "go global" in 2003 , dramatically expanding IREX’s work in scale, geographic reach, and the ways in which we impact people’s lives.

Throughout these decades of change, our focus on people and communities has been steady. Today, IREX and our partners work in more than  100 countries to build a more just, prosperous, and inclusive world by empowering youth, cultivating leaders, strengthening institutions, and extending access to quality education and information .

Russia Travel Advisory

Updated to remove COVID-specific information and the kidnapping risk indicator as well as updates to security risks.

Do not travel to Russia due to the unpredictable consequences of the  unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces , the potential for  harassment and the singling out of U.S. citizens for detention by Russian government security officials , the  arbitrary enforcement of local law ,  limited flights into and out of Russia , the  Embassy’s limited ability to assist U.S. citizens in Russia , and the possibility of  terrorism .  U.S. citizens residing or travelling in Russia should depart immediately.  Exercise increased caution due to  the risk of wrongful detentions.

The U.S. government’s ability to provide routine or emergency services to U.S. citizens in Russia is severely limited, particularly in areas far from the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, due to Russian government limitations on travel for embassy personnel and staffing, and the ongoing suspension of operations, including consular services, at U.S. consulates.

There have been numerous reports of drone attacks, explosions, and fires in areas in Western and Southern Russia, particularly near the Russian border with Ukraine, as well as in Moscow and St. Petersburg. In the event of an emergency, U.S. citizens should follow instructions from local authorities and seek shelter immediately.

In September 2022, the Russian government mobilized citizens to the armed forces in support of its invasion of Ukraine. Russia may refuse to acknowledge dual nationals’ U.S. citizenship, deny their access to U.S. consular assistance, subject them to mobilization, prevent their departure from Russia, and/or conscript them. 

U.S. citizens should note that U.S. credit and debit cards no longer work in Russia, and options to electronically transfer funds from the United States are extremely limited due to sanctions imposed on Russian banks. There are reports of cash shortages within Russia.

Commercial flight options are extremely limited and are often unavailable on short notice. If you wish to depart Russia, you should make independent arrangements as soon as possible. The U.S. Embassy has severe limitations on its ability to assist U.S. citizens to depart the country and transportation options may suddenly become even more limited. U.S. Embassy personnel are generally not permitted to travel on Russian air carriers due to safety concerns.  The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) downgraded the air safety rating for Russia from Category 1 to Category 2 on April 21, 2022, due to Russia’s Federal Agency for Air Transport noncompliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety standards.  The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) prohibiting U.S. aviation operations into, out of, within, or over those areas of the Moscow Flight Information Region (FIR), the Samara FIR (UWWW) and the Rostov-na-Donu (URRV) FIR within 160NM of the boundaries of the Dnipro (UKDV) Flight Information Regions. For more information, U.S. citizens should consult the  Federal Aviation Administration’s Prohibitions, Restrictions, and Notices .

The right of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression are not consistently protected in Russia. U.S. citizens should avoid all political or social protests and not photograph security personnel at these events. Russian authorities have arrested U.S. citizens who have participated in demonstrations and there are numerous reports Russian nationals have been detained for social media activity. 

Country Summary:

U.S. citizens, including former and current U.S. government and military personnel and private citizens engaged in business who are visiting or residing in Russia, have been interrogated without cause and threatened by Russian officials, and may become victims of harassment, mistreatment, and extortion. 

Russian security services may fail to notify the U.S. Embassy of the detention of a U.S. citizen and unreasonably delay U.S. consular assistance. Russian security services are increasing the arbitrary enforcement of local laws to target foreign and international organizations they consider “undesirable.”

Russian security services have arrested U.S. citizens on spurious charges, singled out U.S. citizens in Russia for detention and harassment, denied them fair and transparent treatment, and convicted them in secret trials or without presenting credible evidence. Furthermore, Russian authorities arbitrarily enforce local laws against U.S. citizen religious workers and have opened questionable criminal investigations against U.S. citizens engaged in religious activity. U.S. citizens should avoid travel to Russia to perform work for or volunteer with non-governmental organizations or religious organizations.

There have been multiple security incidents in southwestern Russia related to Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine. The Russian government declared martial law in Russia’s regions bordering Ukraine (Bryansk, Kursk, Belgorod, Voronezh, Rostov, Krasnodar) on October 20, 2022. The martial law regime allows the rapid introduction of restrictive measures such as curfew, seizure of private property, restriction of entry/exit and freedom of movement, internment of foreigners, forced relocation of local residents, and restrictions on public gatherings. U.S. citizens should avoid all travel to these areas.

Recent legislation has expanded the ability of Russian authorities to detain, question, and arrest individuals suspected of acting against Russia’s interests, including posts on personal social media accounts, engaging with foreign and international entities, discrediting the Russian state or military, as well as advocating for the rights of LGBTQI+ persons.

Terrorist groups, both transnational and local terrorist organizations, and individuals inspired by extremist ideology continue plotting possible attacks in Russia. Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs and systems, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sporting and cultural events, educational institutions, airports, and other public areas. Travel to the North Caucasus (including Chechnya and Mt. Elbrus) is prohibited for U.S. government employees and strongly discouraged for U.S. citizens.

The international community, including the United States and Ukraine, does not recognize Russia’s purported annexation of Crimea as well as four other Ukrainian oblasts – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhya – that Russia has purported to annex more recently. There is extensive Russian Federation military presence in these areas. Russia staged its further invasion of Ukraine, in part, from occupied Crimea, and Russia is likely to take further military actions in Crimea, and the four other Ukrainian oblasts are the subject of intensive fighting. There are continuing abuses against foreigners and the local population by the occupation authorities in these regions, particularly against those who are seen as challenging Russia’s authority.

The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv continues to provide consular services to U.S. citizens in Crimea as well as four other Ukrainian oblasts partially occupied by Russia – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhya, although the ongoing conflict severely restricts the Embassy’s ability to provide services in these areas.

1. what is the purpose of the fiscal year (fy) 2024 regional catastrophic preparedness grant program.

The FY 2024 Regional Catastrophic Preparedness Grant Program (RCPGP) is intended to build state and local capacity to manage catastrophic incidents by improving and expanding regional collaboration among emergency managers and other preparedness stakeholders. The primary objective of the RCPGP is to involve regional stakeholders in the development of plans to address those core capabilities that present persistent preparedness challenges, with specific focus on community-level resilience, and an emphasis on addressing the needs of disadvantaged communities and long-term vulnerability reduction within those communities. RCPGP represents one part of a comprehensive set of actions authorized by Congress and implemented by DHS to build preparedness capabilities. The National Preparedness Goal (the Goal) defines what it means to be prepared for a wide range of threats and hazards, including catastrophic incidents.

2. What legislation authorizes funding for the FY 2024 RCPGP?

The program is authorized by the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act, 2024 (Pub. L. No. 118-47). 

3. How much funding is available under the FY 2024 RCPGP?

The total amount of funds distributed under the FY 2024 RCPGP will be $10.8 million.

4, What are the changes in funding levels between FY 2023 and FY 2024? 

The FY 2024 funding level for the RCPGP is $1.2 million less than FY 2023. 

5, Where is the FY 2024 RCPGP Notice of Funding Opportunity located?

The FY 2024 RCPGP Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is located online at www.fema.gov/grants .

6. How many awards are anticipated?

FEMA anticipates that approximately 5-10 awards will be made. Applicants are eligible to apply for up to, but no more than, $3 million.

7. Who is eligible to apply for the FY 2024 RCPGP?

States, as defined by  2 C.F.R. § 200.1 (this definition includes the District of Columbia and territories), and local governments, as defined by  2 C.F.R. § 200.1 , are eligible to apply for FY 2024 RCPGP funds. The following eligibility restrictions for these groups apply: 

• A state or territory is eligible to apply if one or more of the 100 most populous Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA)  per the  Census Bureau’s 2021 Population   Estimates  (as listed in Appendix A of the FY 2024 RCPGP NOFO: 100 Most Populous Metropolitan Statistical Areas [2021])is   located within the state or territory.
• Additionally, the state or territory must obtain the support of the relevant MSA to apply on its behalf. See Section D.10.b Program-Specific Required Forms and Information in the FY 2024 RCPGP NOFO for additional details on this requirement. 
• Local governments must be located within one of the 100 most populous MSAs. FEMA will accept no more than one application per MSA.

8. What must applications include?

 In addition to the required project narrative, budget worksheet and narrative, and standard application forms and agreements as noted in Section D.11 of the NOFO, FY 2024 RCPGP applications must include:

• For States and Territories Only: A written, signed statement explaining the statewide or multi-state impact of the proposed investment and attesting to the advance coordination and support of at least one of the nation’s 100 most populous MSAs located within the state or territory.
• For Local Governments Only: A written, signed statement certifying that the applicant’s chief executive (e.g., mayor, city manager, county executive) and, as applicable, the chief executive of the first principal city of the MSA, supports the application as the local government’s single application being submitted for consideration by FEMA. 
• All Applicants:   Names of all entities partnering on the project, including but not limited to state, local, tribal, and territorial governments, non-profit organizations, and other non-government entities. Partner entities can extend beyond the boundaries of the state/territory or MSA and can be in other states/territories or MSAs for the purposes of regional collaboration.
• All Applicants: Letters of support from partner entities or a written, signed statement certifying the involvement and support of all partner entities that will participate in the proposed project and, if applicable, information on the relationship between the applicant and partnering entities (e.g., existing letters of cooperation/support or administrative agreements, such as Memoranda of Understanding [MOU]).
• All Applicants: A list of all counties and disadvantaged communities that will be involved in the project and will directly benefit from the project, including the Census tract numbers associated with each disadvantaged community based on the Climate and Economic Justice Screening Tool (CEJST).

9. How will FY 2024 RCPGP applications be submitted?

Applying for an award under RCPGP is a multi-step process. Applicants are encouraged to register early in the System for Award Management ( SAM.gov ) and the FEMA Grants Outcomes ( FEMA GO ) system, as the registration process can take four weeks or more to complete. Registration should be done in sufficient time to ensure it does not impact your ability to meet required submission deadlines. Please refer to Section D in the FY 2024 RCPGP NOFO for detailed information and instructions. 

All application materials will be posted on Grants.gov . Eligible applicants should submit their application through FEMA GO. For FEMA GO support, applicants should contact [email protected] or (877) 585-3242, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. Eastern Time (ET). 

Completed applications must be submitted in the FEMA GO system no later than 5 p.m. ET on July 25, 2024. 

10. What are the key dates associated with the FY 2024 RCPGP?

• Application start date: 05/23/2024 
• Application submission deadline: 07/25/2024 at 5 p.m. ET 

11. What is the FY 2024 RCPGP period of performance?

The period of performance is 36 months.

12. How will applications be evaluated?

Applications must conform to the guidance provided in the FY 2024 RCPGP NOFO. Applications that do not meet eligibility and submission requirements will not be evaluated. Accepted applications will be evaluated by a review panel comprised of FEMA subject matter experts using a scoring rubric. Below is a summary of the evaluation criteria. The needs of disadvantaged communities are factored into the scoring criteria . The full criteria can be found in Appendix C of the NOFO,   which details the specific criteria aligned to each of the project narrative requirements and the maximum number of points an application can receive for each criterion. The four base criteria earn up to 100 total possible points. The bonus criterion brings the total to 130 possible points.

• Need: The applicant demonstrates a need for grant funds, including identifying their current capability and a gap/need for a project to build beyond current capability within the core capability of interest. (Possible Points: 0 – 20 maximum)
• Project Design: The applicant demonstrates an effective and sustainable project approach for building their current capability within the 36-month period of performance, including the specific project implementation, project management, and regional collaboration approaches. (Possible Points: 0 – 35 maximum)
• Impact: The applicant demonstrates the proposed project’s regional impact, including how the project will build the applicant’s capability, performance measures the project is expected to achieve, and how the project can be scaled or replicated to benefit national preparedness. (Possible Points: 0 – 25 maximum)
• Budget: The applicant demonstrates a reasonable and cost-effective budget (based on the budget detail worksheet and project narrative), including explanation of reasonable project costs across the requested categories, the project’s relative cost effectiveness and sustainability, and the applicant’s ability to manage federal grants. (Possible Points: 0 – 20 maximum)
• Provide education, tools, and training for emergency managers and other key stakeholders to identify and address the emerging risks and future conditions caused by climate change and increase community-level resilience within the identified disadvantaged communities; 
• Provide education, tools, and training for emergency managers and other key stakeholders to support integration of climate change data into local planning, including hazard mitigation, emergency management, and community planning processes; 
• Plan for and develop research-supported, proactive investments in community resilience; 
• Benefit a relatively large number of census tracts that are identified as a disadvantaged community;
• Benefit multiple states or more than one of the top 100 most-populous MSAs; and/or 
• Are submitted by a new or previously unsuccessful RCPGP applicant.

A short guide to travelling to Russia in 2024

A trip to Russia required solid preparation in the best of times, so please read the following lines carefully before booking. Interestingly, some recent developments have made travel actually easier. The recent emergence of e-visa is one of these developments.

E-Visa and Paper Visa

Electronic visas are valid for up to 16 days and for one entry only. You can apply for an e-visa without additional documentation either at the website of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or use our own Russian visa application form (service fee applies). Only nationals from these countries can apply for an e-visa.

For travel beyond 16 days and for nationals not eligible for an e-visa, you need to check your options with your nearest Russian consulate. Travel to Russia

Most Western countries have stopped flying to Russia (and have banned Russian airlines from entering Western airspace), but there are workarounds, especially if you travel to St.Petersburg. Frequent bus services from nearby Helsinki, Tallinn and Riga connect the imperial capital with the outside world. Gdansk, which is near Kaliningrad, offers an alternative bus route. Kaliningrad airport connects to all major airports inside Russia. It is very easy to book online bus tickets with specialised operators like Luxexpress , Ecolines and others. Both St.Petersburg and Moscow are accessible by air with direct flights from Istanbul, Belgrad, Dubai and further hubs in Asia and Africa.

International credit cards do not work in Russia. Please try to book and pay for as many services as possible (such as hotels) before travelling to Russia. Take enough cash of a major currency with you. Amounts over the equivalent of USD 10000 need to be declared at the border. Once in the country, you can either exchange your currency into cash Rub or open very easily a bank account for non-residence that includes a local debit/bank card. That will take no longer than 48 hours and can be done online, sometimes even before leaving for Russia. Ask us for a short-list of banks we recommend.

Communication

The Internet works as everywhere else. As roaming charges will be high, we highly recommend a local prepaid SIM card in case you stay longer than just a few days. You will need your Russian mobile number to set up apps for taxi, food delivery, local banking and many other online services. 

Border control

All Russian borders are controlled by the FSB and while foreign visitors usually pass the border without a single question asked, you are likely to become a “person of interest” if you have recently visited Ukraine or are a well-known blogger with a digital footprint that may or may not contradict with some of the more draconian laws issued since 24.2.2022. If you turn out to be a person of interest, the authorities can check your social media profile and your postings on your mobile phone or on your notebook. In that case you might be in for additional questions or you might even be refused entry. We have not heard of any arrests of foreign nationals at the border unless you carry drugs (which is a very bad idea anyway).

Facebook, Instagram and Linkedin are blocked in Russia. WhatsApp, Telegram, VK are fully accessible. You can still check your social media on Insta but only by using a VPN, which you will probably need anyway as quite a few online services are not available any longer in Russia (like airbnb, booking.com etc). Which services are blocked seems arbitrary and is hard to predict. The use of a VPN service inside Russia will not get you into any legal trouble.

Public places

In the unlikely event you come across an anti-government demonstration, don’t take any pictures, turn around and walk away. Keep your passport and visa with you at all times. Apart from that, the streets are very safe and despite the geopolitical tensions, you don’t need to fear negative comments, even if your home country participates in Russian sanctions. Just do not enter in any public debates with people you do not know.

Check the often scary worded travel warnings from your government before embarking on a trip. If you are not scared, welcome to Russia!

There is no shortage of food, restaurants and bars are full and busy till late. Domestic travel by metro, train and air transport works smoothly, as usual.

Travel to Russia as a German citizen

I am a German citizen, born in Kazachstan and wanted to visit Russia for quite some time and would now be able to afford it. But since the situation between Russia and the western countries is quite tense and there are a lot of travel warnings I have serious concerns. I wanted to ask if you have any experience with western (especially European/ German) travelers in 2024. I´m looking foreward to your honest advice and estimation.

Hi, this is Eduard from Slovenia. I am planing to do summer road trip of Scandinavian countries with camper van. As I will be visiting and traveling through Tallinn, my next stop I would like to do is visit Saint Petersburg by crossing at Narva. I would like to ask you for 2 information: – is border crossing at Narva with camper van possible, – as I would like to continue with travel up north, is it possible to leave the country on Finland border? Otherwies I will need to travel back to Tallinn and use ferry to Helsinki.

Regarding your question about the Narva border crossing, it is currently impossible to cross into Russia at Narva with your vehicle. However, you have a couple of alternatives for entering Russia with your vehicle. You can cross the border in Otepää (Estonia) or Kirkenes (Norway). So, you can enter Russia through Otepää and exit through Kirkenes or vice versa.

As we enter a year filled with anticipation, a prevalent question surfaces: Will Pope Francis make a return to Argentina after a decade of his pontificate? This query resonates with many, as Pope Francis has often voiced his wish to revisit his homeland - a trip that would be his first as the pontiff. Despite this desire, health issues have been a concern, notably his influenza, which, while unrelated to his overall health that necessitated two surgeries in the past three years, led to the cancellation of his intended trip to Dubai for COP28.

In an interview with Televisa, Pope Francis has detailed plans for three potential trips in the upcoming year: to Argentina, Belgium for the 600th anniversary of the University of Louvain, and to Polynesia. Of these, the visit to Belgium is confirmed.

Polynesia emerges as an unexpected destination , having never been mentioned by the Pope previously, in contrast to his expressed interest in visiting Papua New Guinea. A trip incorporating Thailand was also under consideration during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Belgium, on the other hand, is a definitive stop . With preliminary announcements emanating from Brussels, the visit is slated for September, implying that a journey to Polynesia would likely be scheduled for the summer.

Meanwhile, Argentina might feature in the Pope's itinerary in the early months of the year . A notable occasion is the rescheduled canonization of Mamma Antula, Argentina's Spiritual Mother, now set for February 11 instead of May. While canonizations are typically held in Rome and presided over by the Pope, there is a possibility that Pope Francis may exceptionally conduct this ceremony in Buenos Aires. February or March are being considered as probable for this potential visit to Argentina.

The earlier speculation of a trip to Kosovo appears to have been dismissed. Kosovo, a state not recognized by the Holy See, was mentioned by the Pope in an interview with Vida Nueva prior to his journey to Mongolia.

An additional, highly symbolic visit has been proposed: Pope Francis has received an invitation to visit Vietnam, extended by the country's Government Committee for Religious Affairs . The invitation, sent to Santa Marta, encourages the Pope to witness firsthand the socio-economic progress and religious life in this Southeast Asian nation.

As per the committee, Vietnam's President Thuong has conveyed his and the country's seven million Catholics' eagerness to welcome the Pope. He noted the profound impression left by his encounters with Pope Francis and Cardinal Pietro Parolin during his Vatican visit in July.

Significantly, on December 23, the Holy See appointed its first resident representative in Hanoi, marking a crucial step towards establishing full diplomatic relations.

Nonetheless, the number of Pope Francis's trips is expected to be no more than three.

Funding categories

The program has 3 categories:

CATEGORY 1 – Aboriginal Sporting Carnivals

Grants of up to $2,500 per junior team and $1,500 per senior team for travel and accommodation costs for teams to participate in State-wide or National Carnivals.

Eligible organisations can apply for up to 10 separate teams or individuals under one application, however, under category 1 a separate application must be submitted for each specific sporting event.

• The team must participate in an Aboriginal sporting carnival and/or tournament during September 2023 to February 2024 (for Round 1) and February to August 2024 (for Round 2).
• All teams must reside in Victoria unless individuals are located close to state borders that participate in Victorian competitions / carnivals.

Eligible Expenses

• All costs associated with travel and accommodation for teams to compete in Victorian or national sporting carnivals or tournaments.

Ineligible Expenses

• Costs other than those directly related to travel and accommodation (for example: food, entrance fees and uniforms are excluded).
• Travel and accommodation expenses not for the purpose of attending the identified sporting event.
• Funding sought for individuals that do not identify as being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.

CATEGORY 2 – Uniforms or Equipment

Grants of up to $1,000 per team, club and association and up to $250 per individual to purchase sporting uniforms and/or equipment.

Eligible organisations can apply for up to 10 separate teams or individuals under one application.

• Eligible uniforms and equipment must be purchased between September 2023 to February 2024 (for Round 1) and February to August 2024 (for Round 2).

Eligible uniform and equipment expenditure may include but is not limited to:

• sports bras
• match balls
• team equipment kits
• items for cultural and/or ceremonial purposes
• protective equipment including gloves, helmets and batting pads.

A complete list of eligible uniform and equipment items that can be purchased using grant funds is located in the  program guidelines .

CATEGORY 3 – Athlete Participation Support

Grants of up to $750 for athletes and coaches to assist with travel and accommodation costs to compete or train in regional, state and national competitions or representative teams.

Eligible organisations can apply for up to 10 individuals under one application, however, under category 3 a separate application must be submitted for each specific sporting event.

Applications submitted under category 3 will be accepted from the opening of Round 1, until funding is exhausted.

• All athletes or coaches must identify as being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
• All athletes or coaches must reside in Victoria unless individuals are located close to state borders that participate in Victorian competitions / carnivals.
• All athletes or coaches must be invited or planning to compete in a regional, state or national sporting competition or for a representative team.
• Athletes or coaches must not have previously received an individual grant under this category in the previous funding round.
• Costs associated with travel and accommodation to compete or train in regional, state and national competitions or representative teams between September 2023 to February 2024 for Round 1 and February to August 2024 for Round 2.

Ineligible expenses

• Costs not directly related to travel and accommodation (for example: food, entrance fees or uniforms are excluded).

Who can apply?

Aboriginal Individuals and teams that are not affiliated with a club or association can apply for a grant in categories 1 and 2 but must arrange an auspice to manage the grant funding on their behalf through a funding agreement with the department.

Aboriginal Community groups that are not incorporated may apply for a grant for their community members (Aboriginal individuals or teams) but must have an incorporated association acting as an auspicing body to manage the funding on their behalf through a funding agreement with the department.

Incorporated sporting clubs and associations or Aboriginal Community Controlled organisations may apply for a grant on behalf of the members (Aboriginal individuals or teams) and will be expected to manage the funding through a funding agreement with the department.

Auspice organisations  Please note that individuals or teams that are not affiliated with a club or association must contact the Aboriginal Programs team advising they require an auspice. The Aboriginal Programs team will advise the individual or team what the process is when entering an auspicing arrangement.

Application process

Category 1 and 2.

• Applications open: 18 September 2023
• Applications close:  20 October 2023
• Outcomes to be notified: December 2023
• Applications open: March 2024
• Applications close:  15 April 2024
• Outcomes to be notified: June 2024

Applications open: 18 September 2023 and  will remain open until funding allocation is exhausted .

Outcomes to be notified within 4 weeks from the application submission date.

How will applications be assessed?

Eligible applications will be assessed against the  program guidelines .

Please note that the assessment process for categories 1 and 2 may take at least two months from the closing date, whilst outcomes for category 3 are expected within 4 weeks from the application submission date. Applicants will receive written notification of the outcome of their application.

Eligibility does not guarantee success. It is expected that more applications will be received than can be funded.

You will receive an application number when you submit an application online. Please quote your application number in all correspondence relating to your application.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Moscow warns US of 'fatal consequences'; 1,300 Russian casualties in 24 hours, Ukraine claims

Moscow has issued a warning to the US after Joe Biden approved the use of its weapons to strike inside Russia. Meanwhile, Ukraine claims the Russian military has had 1,270 casualties in the past day, one of the highest daily figures since the war began.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy will participate in the G7 summit in Italy late this month, either online or in person, his spokesman said.

The summit, set to take place in southern Italy from 13 to 15 June, will have as a key agenda item ways to use profits from frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine.

“Unfortunately, I cannot confirm or deny that the President will physically participate in the G7 summit, but in any case, whether online or physically, there is no doubt that he will be there,” the president’s spokesman, Sergey Nikiforov told Ukrainian television.

A Russian has been killed by Ukrainian shelling in Belgorod, according to the local governor.

Vyacheslav Gladkov wrote on his Telegram channel: "A munition detonated in the Korocha district, as a result of which one person was killed and three were injured.

"Nine people received various injuries in two shelling attacks; five of them were hospitalised. One of the injured persons, a woman wounded in the village of Voznesenovka, is in grave condition. She is currently in intensive care, on artificial lung ventilation."

One person was also injured in the Graivoron district, the governor said.  

Russia added several British "establishment figures", journalists and experts to the list of people barred from entering the country.

Moscow's foreign ministry says the decision was made due to their "hostile" actions. 

In a statement, the ministry also urged Britain to drop its support for Ukraine which it claimed was causing more civilian casualties. 

The names of those sanctioned have not been published.

 It will be unsafe to restart the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine as long as war rages around it, the UN nuclear watchdog chief has said.

Rafael Grossi held a meeting with Russia on the issue last week after officials including Vladimir Putin told him Moscow wanted to restart Europe's biggest nuclear power plant.

The six reactors are shut down on safety grounds at the recommendation of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). 

"The idea, of course, they have is to restart at some point," Mr Grossi told a news conference on the first day of a quarterly meeting of the IAEA's 35-nation board of governors. 

"They are not planning to decommission this nuclear power plant. So this is what prompts the need to have a discussion about that."

Russia said after last week's meeting that it was not currently planning to reactivate the plant. 

Mr Grossi said some important steps needed to be taken before it can restart safely. 

"In terms of what needs to happen... there shouldn't be any bombing or any activity of this type," he said. 

"Then there should be a more stable assurance of external power supply. 

"This requires repairs, important repairs of existing lines, which at the moment, and because of the military activity, are very difficult to envisage."

At least 12 people, including a pregnant woman and eight children, were injured in the attack on Balakliaa over the weekend, according to Kharkiv police.

The head of the Balakliaa military administration, Vitaliy Karabanov, said: "Preliminary reports suggest that an Iskander missile hit the area. 

"Experts say it exploded a few meters from the house, causing damage and igniting a fire due to the wooden structures. 

"A family of six lived there: father, mother, and four children.

"Another family with four children was visiting, so a total of eight children and four adults were injured. 

"They were all in the house at the time of the explosion."

A Russian strike on a village in Kherson has injured a man in his 70s, according to the regional military administration.

He was left with concussion and injuries to his back and head, and was treated at the scene.

The village, Tomyna Balka, is a few miles north of the Dnipro River delta across the Russian-occupied territories of Kherson and around 12 miles west of the regional capital of the same name.

Ukraine retook Kherson and other settlements on the west bank of the Dnipro River during a counteroffensive in the autumn of 2022.

Allowing Ukraine to use Western air defence systems against targets in Russia is crucial if Kyiv is going to repel Russian glide bomb and missile strikes against Kharkiv, a leading thinktank has said.  

After Joe Biden's partial lifting of restrictions on how Ukraine can use military supplies sent by the US, Kyiv can now use American weapons to strike inside Russia.

Eleven other Western countries have also recently partially or completely lifted restrictions on Ukraine's use of Western-provided weapons to strike military targets inside Russia.

"These policy changes will allow Ukrainian forces to use Western-provided systems to strike Russian firing and staging areas in Russia's border areas and airspace," according to the Institute for the Study of War, which is based in the US.

"Ukrainian officials reported that Ukrainian forces downed a number of Russian military aircraft in February 2024, many of which were conducting glide bomb strikes in the Avdiivka direction.

"Ukrainian forces' ability to down Russian military aircraft in a frontline area indicates that Ukrainian forces will likely be able to replicate the same effects with both Ukrainian and Western-provided systems to protect northern Kharkiv Oblast and Kharkiv City from Russian glide bomb strikes launched from Russian airspace."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously said that Russian forces would not be able to seize Kharkiv City if Ukrainian forces received two Patriot air defence systems to deploy to the region.

According to the ISW, deployment of these defence systems would have limited effectiveness, were they not able to strike targets in Russian airspace. 

Around 1.5 million men have registered for conscription in Ukraine, the defence ministry has said.

After the new law on mobilisation came into force on 18 May, military-aged men were given 60 days to update their personal data so that the state could locate them.

According to a video posted on the ministry's YouTube channel, the majority of the updates were done on the new Reserve+ online app.

In addition to using the app, Ukrainians can update their data in person at public service centres or enlistment offices.

The ministry added that 14,000 men living abroad across 124 countries had updated their credentials. 

Ahead of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, Britain's defence chief Admiral Sir Tony Radakin spoke about the comparisons made between the Second World War and the conflict in Ukraine.

He told Sky News he is confident we are not heading towards another world war and has every faith Ukraine would prevail in its fight.

Admiral Radakin added that by the end of June, 500,000 Russians would have died or been injured in the conflict.

Kazan's airport has imposed temporary flight restrictions for safety reasons today, Russia's aviation watchdog has said.

This is usually done in expectation of Ukrainian drone attacks.

Kazan is the capital of the Russian Republic of Tatarstan and is located about 500 miles east of Moscow.

The region has been repeatedly attacked by drones in recent  months, an indication that Ukraine has dramatically improved its ability to strike deep within Russian territory.
