Located at the upper part of the Kapuas River, the small town of Putussibau is surrounded by rainforest and intense natural beauty, just waiting to be discovered.

Although Putussibau is often just a short rest stop on the long cruise along the Kapuas River, it is also possible to spend a little time here and perhaps even spend the night in a Dayak hut in the village. Trekking through the jungle is a popular activity, and there is a wide range of wildlife to spot as you creep through the undergrowth.

Although it is possible to drive to Putussibau from the city of Pontianak in just a few hours, by far the best way to get here is to join a group and take a boat right along the Kapuas River. The journey can take several days, so take plenty of provisions and be prepared to spend a couple of nights along the way in one of the small tribal villages located on the banks of the river.

The sites for panning diamonds are found along the Landak river, from Ngabang to the highlands, and around Sanggau.

Putussibau is the capital of Kapuas Hulu within approximately 800 km from Pontianak, West Kalimantan provincial capital. The town is inhabited by approximately 23,000 inhabitants and become the largest city in Kapuas Hulu. The town also becomes the gateway to the two major eco-tourism destination in the heart of Borneo, namely Sentarum National Park and Betung Kerihun National Park.

Besides its location that is not far from Sentarum National Park or Betung Kerihun National Park, Putussibau save another charm as a city that is near the longest river in Indonesia. For the people in Putussibau, the existence of the river is the center of their lives. Most of the people, especially the Dayak tribe lived in long houses once inhabited by dozens of family and standing near the river. The river itself is the place to make a living (food) and a source of water for daily life. Besides, the river also serves as a transportation hub that would connect them to the outside world.

Arriving at Putussibau, walk around Kapuas river bank and Embaloh River upstream. Not only the natural beauty of green that you can enjoy but also you can directly know the life of Dayak community. On the banks of Kapuas River, standing betang Kapuas River (long house) which is the Dayak settlements. Named as longhouse, because the house is truly long house and reach hundreds of meters in length, consists of many booths or rooms. Made of high-quality solid ironwood, the long houses once inhabited by dozens of families. No wonder if a house can have more than 50 booths to accommodate all family members. As the home of many families, the house became the center of another life. In addition as a residence, the house also used for daily activities of the Dayak community, meetings, rituals, ceremonies, cultural performances, and others.

The room called as Ruai or pandopo is the space that is not blocked by board walls. This space is a public space or yard together to play, mingle, meetings, discussions, or hold traditional ceremonies. Another room is for each head of a family that has limited with wall board.

The daily activities that are commonly seen in a long house is where the woman was busy weaving, braiding or making bracelets and necklaces that will be sold as souvenirs. Meanwhile, the men busy carving the wood, sap incise, hunting fish, and others.

Beside in Kapuas River and River Embaloh, the long houses can also be found around Uluk Palin River. It is about 30 minutes from the center of Putussibau town, there longhouses inhabited by sub tribe of Dayak Taman.

Betang home Uluk River Palin is one of the oldest houses Betang in Kapuas Hulu. Betang house built 65 years ago has 54 separate rooms with 286 meters length. The poles made from ironwood stilts above 50 centimeters diameter and has eight meters height. Interior of the building is relatively pure, in design or building materials. This house is use a cane to tie the roof wood. Wooden pegs are used as an extension of the pillars foundation. Located near Putussibau town, Betang house in Uluk Palin has visited by many tourists. You will be greeted friendly, and charges are not collected. You just need to fill the guest book.

If you comes at certain times, you might be able to watch the traditional ceremony, Gawai Dayak. This ceremony is an expression of gratitude to Jubata (God) as they get bountiful harvest, as well as request that the next harvest will prosper. The procession of the ceremony is interesting because it involves many people and include numbers of unique traditional rituals.

You can stay at betang house for a few days. The experience staying at the house can be an unforgettable experience when you feeling Dayak traditional way of life that is worth to trying. Food will be provided by the host and will certainly become the wonderful culinary experience.

If you want to enjoy the rivers close to Putussibau, you can hire a tour fringe of the river using a boat or a motorboat. Boat tours can take you to the fringe of the Kapuas River, Aur gulf, even toward Sentarum Lake and Empangau Lake. Along the river path, you will be able to see the riverside villages, betang antique houses, see the fishing activity, even enjoy the wealth of flora and fauna around the riverbanks.

Day 1: Jakarta Putussibau via Pontianak

Fly to West Borneo, Indonesia by Lion Air at 06.00 and transit in Pontianak airport before flying to Putussibau town. After one hour flight from Pontianak, arrived 11.05, you will be picked up and Our staff brings you to the Hotel by car/bus. Check in to the Hotel, Explore the livelihood of the people in Putussibau town – Putussibau, the capital of the district of Kapuas Hulu, is located East of Pontianak – West Kalimantan. free program.

Day 2: Putussibau – Na Potan Village – Putussibau Explore Tour

After breakfast, departure from the Hotel by car to the boat station then the River journey to Na. Potan Village (stuffs left in Putussibau) by long boat. Heading up Kapuas river and Sibau river. Hat is needed. Arrive in Na. Potan Village, check in to the local guesthouse, lunch and rest Swimming in the pure white water in Potan River, In the village sarong is required by woman for taking bath, View Na. Potan Village – Na. Potan is a village of Bukat and Kantuk People, interact with the local people. Up stream Sibau river for wildlife watching and nature panorama view. By longboat, possible to point long-tailed Maccaques, Hornbill, eagle, kingfisher. Back to the guest house, rest and dinner.

Day 3: Putussibau Jungle Trekking and Explore Wilderness of Kalimantan

Start trekking and explore borneo through traditional rubber plantations, rich fruit gardens and rice fields (abandoned/active). During the dry season you can meet local farmers who are just coming back from harvesting the rubber. The following trek is a combination of dry and wet trekking. Feel the genuineness of Borneo’s rain forest, enjoy the clear water, and listen to the wild animal’s calls – Jungle trekking by following local fruit garden and traditional rubber plantation. At the confluence, we will cook a simple lunch for you. While waiting for the lunch to be served, you can relax, swim in the clear water or just enjoy the peacefulness of the forest – Dry and wet trekking. After lunch we will hike up Jeluang Hill, passing sorea trees in some hills and listening to animal calls – Long T-shirt, binocular, sandal for wet trekking, shoes for hikking, daypack are required. Hanging tent will be constructed on the top of the hill to spend the night in. As the sun sets the jungle awakes and you will hear the amazing sounds of the nightly jungle life.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner Accommodation: Overnight at a simple flying camp.

Day 4: Kalimantan Trekking and Climbing in The Jungle

Preparation and breakfast – jungle food to be served simply by the indigenous people, Climbing up a steep hill is the challenge for today. It is expected to take us hour and hour. Once up there, you can enjoy the beauty and freshness of the pristine forest of the Heart of Borneo from an extraordinary place. This is the end of the heavy trekking part of the tour. It is then time to hike downstream in the calm Ribut River. While trekking on the river, you can see fishes and shrimps swimming in the pure water. After another hour we will reach the point where this river flows into the Suai River. It is here on the rocky-sandy riverbank that the end of trekking. The fishes and the clear water invite you for a swim before constructing the second hanging tent camp on the riverbank. View a nice panorama and breathe in pure oxygen.

Day 5: River Tour Putussibau and Mingle with Local People of Kalimantan, The Dayak Ethnic

Preparation and breakfast, After breakfast, we will head down the Suai River in a traditional wooden longboat/ raft until we reach the Na. Awin Village. Boating through the clear river with its small rapids with local people will be exiting and adventurous. While on the boat/raft you can also watch birds and fishes until we arrive in the traditional village of Dayak Iban before continuing down to Na. Awin (Kantuk Dayak Ethnic) – local longboat, sometime we have to pull the boat. The trip continue by car to Sungolok Apalin Longhouse – Sungulok Apalin is the oldest longhouse in the world. Arrive in Sungulok Apalin, Explore the livelihood of the local (Tamambaloh Ethnic). Spent your night with local and feel the life in slowly seconds. Free program.

Day 6: Off-Road on Borneo – Hiking – Danau Sentarum National Park Tour

Land journey to Lanjak by car (4WD) – Northern road, the route to the Border between West Kalimantan and Sarawak – Malaysia, Stop over to Lanjak highland to view the overall Sentarum lake, Arrive in Lanjak, the trip continue by cruising Sentarum Lake by Speedboat to reach Pulau Melayu Island. Arrive at Pulau Melayu, hiking up the hill, view the biggest wetland in Borneo from the high point. Trip to Na. Leboyan – Nanga Leboyan is fishermen village in Danau Sentarun National park, Arrived at Na. Leboyan village, check in to the local house. Explore the livelihood of fishermen, swimming, boating to have wildlife and nature panorama view. Dinner, interact with the local (Malay people-Fishermen).

Day 7: Off-River Tour Journey – Putussibau Hotel

After breakfast, Lake-river journey to Putussibau by speedboats – the boat will pass some village in the river bank along the way. After arriving in Putussibau the staff will drive you to the hotel. Check in to the Hotel- Free program.

Day 8: Sightseeing Tour Around Putussibau and Fly To Jakarta

At appropriate time, we will escort you to Puutussibau airport for your flight to Jakarta via Pontianak at 12.10 arrived Jakarta at 16.15 by Lion Air. Tour Ends.
