Vienna’s Ugly Tour – Best tours in Vienna

Sun. 01st Jul — Mon. 31st Dec

Vienna’s Ugly Tour

How much does it cost?  10€

When by appointment only, get in contact with the organisers space and place, here .

Meeting spot? Augarten

What will you learn on this tour in a few words: about the ugly, but interesting side of Vienna’s architecture

Beautiful has become boring in our world of Instagram and in which you rarely see an ugly selfie. While Vienna’s common image resembles an elegant swan wearing a tutu while performing a symphony on a piano it plays with its little beak, on this guided tour you’ll see something like an architectural freak show of 19 buildings that will make you go – “God damn, you ugly!” Printed in the ugliest font known to humankind, Comic Sans, are the words ‘Vienna Ugly’ on paper flapping in the wind on a stick Eugene has obviously snapped off of a tree shortly before the tour’s commencement. Or perhaps it’s all staged, and the stick he picked up a while back with the preconceived idea of how it would add to the whole tour’s ‘ugly’ theme.

Eugene Quinn is a Brit’, and the face of this tour celebrating the lovely ugly of Vienna, while his cheeky wit is what will swallow your attention whole as you hop from building to ugly building in Vienna’s 2nd district, Leopoldstadt. Violent buildings, buildings that look like a mathematical puzzle given up on by a maths professor that’s grown tired of it, a building on which a guy has painted his love life, dedicating every floor to a different past lover – it features an eye on it that cries when it rains and a blue penis spitting sperm. “There’s high competition in Vienna of buildings trying to get onto the Ugly tour,” explains Eugene. This is one very entertaining tour, and also a very informative one.

Also good to know… the organisation behind this tour, space and place, a raft of other kinds of tours, and they’re always different. Keep an eye on their website for details.

Shades tours – Best tours in Vienna

Shades tours.

How much does it cost? 15€

When varies, check the website for details

Meeting spot? depends on the tour, check here .

What will you learn on this tour in a few words:  to see the streets of Vienna through the eyes of somebody living on them

Have you ever stopped to notice those people hanging out in the doorways around the city, or asking passers-by for small change. We’re all guilty of walking on by and offering nothing but a ‘sorry,’ but what this tour challenges you to do is to stop in your tracks, and dedicate some of your time to understanding these people’s lives. It is a truly human experience, and one that will make you feel a buzz – this buzz is the feeling of being human.

These people we walk by everyday are doing it rough, and for some reason have landed on the streets. The Shades Tours Vienna offer you an insight into how some of Vienna’s homeless ended up there, and what life on the street is like. It has been opening people’s eyes for a while now – their tours are led by people from the streets themselves. In a two hour tour, a guide will offer a fascinating insight into their life, and inspire you to open your mind, as they reveal the raw reality of life on the street.

The drill is simple:  Gather your friends together and book a group tour on the Shades Tours website , or keep and eye out on their Facebook page for updates about their upcoming tours.

Also good to know…  This is a social project run by a lovely crowd which sees a large part of the tour participation costs go to the tour guides who are homeless themselves.

The Third Man tour – Sewer Tour – Best tours in Vienna

The third man tour – sewer tour.

How much does it cost? Adults: 10€ Students: 8 €

When ( May–October) THU–SUN: every full hour from 10am–8pm (last tour 7pm)

Meeting spot? Karlsplatz-Girardipark, 1010

What will you learn on this tour in a few words: about the subterranean world of Vienna’s sewer system and about the film, The Third Man

Even if you don’t know the old Orson Welles film, The Third Man, that was set in Vienna, or even if you don’t give a flying frangipani about the film, this is a tour well worth doing. But you should be prepared to handle some pretty putrid smells when you sign up for it, which is pretty understandable for a tour that heads through the sewers. That’s right, the Third Man tour will give you the rare chance to venture underground and learn about the whole other world down there that was built a long while back. Of course, the main focus of the tour is of the scenes of the Third Man movie that played out down in the sewers where good ol’ Harry Lime is running from the law. We do recommend that if you haven’t seen the film, you do go catch it on the big screen (They have screenings of it regularly showing at the Burg Kino as it is an awesome film if you like the pace of the old classics. It will make the tour more worthwhile and also make it more believable when you spontaneously get into character as Harry Lime during the tour.

Prime Tours – Kick Bike Tour – best tours in Vienna

With this tour offered by the Prime Tours company, you’ll be able to take a look at Vienna from a very different perspective. But only if you’re actually able to keep up with your tour guide as you’ll be cruising through parts of the city on a Kick Bike. Secret Vienna Tours – best tours in Vienna

Secret vienna tours.

How much does it cost? 15–30€, depending on the exact tour

When  varies, check the website for details

Meeting spot? various locations, depending on the tour

We have all heard the classic stories of the good old Vienna – where Sisi was chilling in Schönbrunn, and Mozart was creating magical music. They are all quite nice stories… if you are a tourist. Introducing Secret Vienna, a way to move out of the repetitive historic tours and look at the city through different lenses. These lenses include: uncovering the dark side of Vienna, understanding the lasting impact of the powerful women Vienna had over the years or going through the steps of dictators in Vienna. You can even experience a tour wearing shackles all the time (trust us – not only does it makes sense but it makes for a great experience). These tours are a great plan for locals because they allow you to have the experience of being a tourist in your own city all over again, whether it is walking through streets you would normally not walk by or discovering new information about why some things in Vienna are actually just like that, you can rest assured that you will have an inner feeling of “why the hell haven’t I known this after living here for so long!?” Also, it might happen that while walking you might find out that the building you pass by every day on your way to work has actually 7 subterranean floors! Just sayin’.

We definitely recommend… doing one of their tours as a weekend plan with your partner or friends.

Hotrod daylight tour.

How much does it cost? 99€ per Person (including helmet, walkie talkie and guide)

When daily at 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm check website for exact dates

Meeting spot? Judengasse 4, 1010 – near Ankeruhr at Hoher Markt

What will you learn on this tour in a few words: how to cruise around in a mini car in Vienna and do some sightseeing on the way

Vienna’s relaxed road rules allow for this unique two-hour tour, which combines a bit of sightseeing with the chance to live out your Grand Prix fantasy. The little go-karts of Hot Rod City Tour have grunt, capable of reaching up to 60kph. You won’t be able to resist stretching this little beasts legs when you feel and hear the rumble beneath you, and your guide says, ‘Ok, let’s ride.’ And we giggled – until the giggle became more like an evil villain’s laugh – as we bounced over the cobblestones of the 1st district and the Stephansdom steeples revealed themselves from behind a building. But that’s enough words – here’s a spoiler revealing why this awesome experience made us go ‘WEEEEEEEEE!’ on wheels:

[fve]https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=6&v=zpjwCm0JQmk[/fve]

Also good to know… they also offer Moonlight Tours and other fun themed tours (Sacher Tour, Bachelor/ette Tour). Group tours can also be arranged, all driver licences are accepted.

Vienna Urban Adventures – best tours in Vienna

Vienna urban adventures.

How much does it cost? Prices vary from 75–95€ with private tours available for a little bit more (children under 6 go for free).

When  MON–SAT: 9:30am (market tours) MON–SAT: 4pm (evening tours) check website for exact dates

Meeting spot? Outside the Main Entrance of Stephansdom for the Market Tours and outside the Karlskirche for the Evening Tours.

What will you learn on this tour in a few words:  You will catch a slightly different side of Vienna, a little out of your normal comfort zone.

A tour for people who have maybe found themselves in the same parts of Vienna, district-centric people or, for those who have just stepped off the boat and are ready to step out of the first district.

Wolfie and his team could take you on a number of different routes depending on who your guide is, with the aim being for them to show you their ‘Grätzel’. The second aim is to stuff you so full of food that you can barely complete the tour itself. We won’t reveal exactly where we went, because that would spoil the fun! We will tell you that you should definitely go hungry, as we ate our way through most of Vienna’s best sweet treats, switched to savoury before finishing with a Krapfen that was so light and fluffy that it was like eating an apricot stuffed cloud. And this from a district we had lived in, from a shop we had walked past, but never thought to go in. But these guys know these things.

With the recent introduction of their evening tours that follow roughly the same premise, except swapping the Coffee for Alcohol (soft drinks also available on request obviously) and the Wolfie promising more and exciting tours on the way, he mentioned something about wine… This is a site to keep an eye on as it will be a very good one for when people come to visit who have already been a few times.

Also good to know…  The Australian firm is world wide, meaning that getting involved in one makes the others easier to find and, discounted, with all the tours semi connected.

15 Best Vienna Tours

Vienna holds a number of impressive distinctions.

It’s Austria’s capital, one of the country’s nine states, and with nearly 2 million residents it’s also its most populous city.

For generations Vienna has been the country’s economic and cultural heart, and each year guests from all over the world descend on the historic city to experience some of the most memorable attractions on the continent.

Vienna is rich in history, but it’s also a center of business, recreation, and food, and it’s full of buildings with impressive architecture as well.

Below are 14 of the best tours of Vienna.

1. Private Vienna Welcome Tour with Local Guide

Vienna, Austria

Back in the late ‘70s Billy Joel proclaimed, “Vienna waits for you.”

Whether you took the hint and visited then or are just getting around to it four decades later, Vienna is definitely a city that deserves to be experienced.

This private, guided, welcome tour introduces new guests to the city’s most popular attractions, and is a great way to get up to speed quickly for those with limited time.

Depending on available time and the interests of participants, tours can range from 2 to 4 hours, which means you’ll only spend time on the things you want to see.

Entrance fees, food and drink, and optional activities aren’t included.

2. Skip-the-Line Guided Tour of Schönbrunn Palace & Gardens

Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna

For much of its existence Schönbrunn Palace was home to the Hapsburgs who ruled the country for generations.

It goes without saying that they spared no expense in ensconcing themselves in luxurious appointments, and for many travelers time spent on-site is one of the most memorable experiences of their trip.

Priceless art, gilded furniture, expansive gardens and dozens of staterooms are among the palace’s most impressive features, and guests will learn about the family and country’s history as they’re led around by their knowledgeable guide.

Tours generally last a few hours, and entrance to the Imperial Crypt is an option that may be chosen at booking.

View Prices & Reviews

3. Lipizzaner Performance

Performance Of The Lipizzans

For those who don’t know much about horses, Lipizzaners are a majestic breed that have been trained to perform for generations.

Lipizzaners are purported to be the oldest breed in Europe, and they perform feats that seem to defy the laws of physics.

In fact they’re such an impressive cultural attraction that they’ve received recognition from UNESCO as cultural heritage icons.

This multi-hour extravaganza usually leaves spectators breathless, and is accompanied by traditional Viennese music which adds to the already unique and inspiring atmosphere.

Tickets tend to go quickly during peak times, so plan ahead if that’s when you’ll be visiting.

4. Guided Viennese Coffee House Tour

Guided Viennese Coffee-House Tour

If you can’t get over-caffeinated in a coffee loving town like Vienna in three hours you’re just not trying hard enough.

Not only will participants taste some of the city’s best java in all its delectable forms, but they’ll learn about how beans are roasted, ground, and transformed into the addictive elixir.

Vienna has a distinct coffee culture that most visitors find alluring, and there’s no better way to experience it than as part of this guided coffee house tour.

It’s reserved for small groups, so is a great fit for those traveling with friends and family.

5. Sightseeing Boat Tour with Lunch

Sightseeing Boat Tour with Lunch - Vienna

This boat tour along the Danube River is a great fit for international visitors who want their first view of the historic city to be from a unique perspective.

Cruises last about an hour and include lunch with soup, main course and desert.

The boat is both stable and comfortable, and offers guests plenty of indoor area from which to relax or just enjoy the sights if the weather happens to take a turn for the worse.

You’ll see many of the city’s most prominent attractions and lots of stunning examples of medieval, renaissance, and baroque architecture.

6. Strudel Show and Tasting at Schönbrunn Palace

Strudel Show with Tasting at Schönbrunn Palace

Strudel occupies a central place in the lives of many Austrians.

It’s so popular in fact, that a number of tours offer visitors trips to Strudel bakeries that always include tastings.

Safety in Vienna

Vienna is remarkably safe, especially considering the size of the city. As a result, it is a popular tourist destination. With all tourist spots around the world, there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure that you stay as safe as the city promises to be.

Firstly, the tourist areas can get quite crowded, making it a prime pickpocket territory. To avoid becoming a victim, keep your wits about you and remain vigilant. Other areas, such as Karlsplatz station and Gumpendorfer Strasse, can get quite boisterous in the evenings, so stick to areas you know once the sun goes down.

Perhaps the biggest cause for concern in Vienna is the high number of cyclists. There are many cyclists that cruise around the city (at quite fast speeds). While they do normally stick to the bicycle paths on the road, it’s important to take extra care when crossing the road as they can appear from nowhere. Discover Vienna’s Unusual Structures

Quirky buildings and strange-looking churches add to Vienna’s incredible charm. Find the best unusual structures to add to your itinerary in this section.

Tip: Check our Vienna travel tips guide to learn how to save on entrance fees and best navigate the Austrian capital.

  • Explore the Hundertwasser Buildings. The eccentric architect Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser worked his magic across Europe, New Zealand, and Japan. The Hundertwasserhaus is his most recognizable work and one of the attractions Vienna is known for . You will find the extraordinary residential building at Kegelgasse 36-38. We also recommend a visit to the Hundertwasser Museum across the street, KunstHausWien . The architect’s unique creations in Vienna also include the Müllverbrennungsanlage Spittelau. The incineration plant’s tower dominates the city skyline and you’ll see it from afar.
  • Marvel at the State Hall of the Austrian National Library. This staggering baroque library hall was built in the 18 th century. Its size is impressive – the hall is approximately 260 ft. (80 m) long and 65 ft. (20 m) wide. As part of the former Court Library, the museum houses more than 200,000 books. It is also home to the magnificent marble statues sculpted by the Strudel brothers. You’ll be astounded to see the four Venetian globes, each measuring more than 3 ft. (1 m) in diameter. They are a key feature of the Österreichische Nationalbibliothek’s (Austrian National Library) amazing hall.
  • Wonder at the peculiar Wotruba Church. The Church of the Most Holy Trinity, or Kirche Zur Heiligsten Dreifaltigkeit, is a cubist building erected on top of Grassy Hill. The concrete slabs create a unique pattern that looks like anything but a church. The edifice was constructed using 152 individual blocks following the vision of Fritz Wotruba. The windows take the space between some of the blocks. Don’t miss the chance to take a selfie in front of one of the most unique places in Vienna.
  • View the Narrenturm (The Fools Tower ) . Once an insane asylum, the tower now houses one of the biggest pathology and anatomy collections in the world. Locals call Narrenturm “ The Poundcake ” because of its shape. As one of the strangest things to do in Vienna, the place offers a glimpse at some gruesome stuff. You can see taxidermy specimens, jars with disfigured fetuses, and syphilitic skulls. Note : Definitely not for the faint-hearted.
  • Explore Kirche am Steinhof. This unusual church sits on top of a hill within a complex known as Spital Otto Wagner – a psychiatric institute built under Art Nouveau influence. Follow the paths until you reach the golden dome. Admiring the structure from the outside would take you an hour, as there are hundreds of incredible details to discover.
  • Tour the Stephansdom Crypt. This extraordinary place is part of the impressive Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral) located in the heart of Vienna. The remains of approximately 11,000 people lie inside multiple catacombs and smaller crypts. Every guided tour includes a glimpse of dozens of jars full of imperial intestines, such as Empress Maria Theresia’s stomach, for example. The fact that Stephansdom Crypt is still an active burial location earns it a spot on the list of strange things do to in Vienna.
  • Explore the Republic of Kugelmugel. Discover the so-called “spherical hill” in the Prater Wien . Created by Edwin Lipburger and his son in 1971, the sphere measures 25 ft. (7.62 m) in diameter. When authorities in the family’s hometown forced them to move the giant sphere, the creators decided to fight back and declared it a sovereign territory. The Lipburger family then created a micronation, hoping to protect their structure. Sadly, it never worked as planned, despite the fact the newly-established nation attracted around 600 citizens.
  • Amuse yourself at Supersense. What would a combination of a café and a hipster cabinet look like? This curious location holds the answer. Supersense is a part of a neo-Gothic mansion boasting Art Nouveau style, and you’d never guess that there’s a cult of analog technology inside. Marvel at curious exhibits like an old-school recording studio and a functioning letterpress. Some of the other items include a 7,000-unit scent collection and a pinball machine, which takes your picture if you reach a high score. If you’re a photography fan, don’t miss the photo section dedicated to the wonders of analog photography.
  • Visit Hofjagd und Rüstkammer. There’s hardly a more imposing collection of weaponry and armory in Europe. The impressive building welcomes you with gigantic halls full of different means of warfare dating back to the Middle Ages. You can see genuine armor that belonged to the Habsburg imperial family, making Hofjagd and Rüstkammer one of the most unique places in Vienna.
  • Feel like an emperor at Hofpavillon Hietzing (Imperial Court Pavilion). This is your chance to see an extraordinary subway entrance designed for none other than the emperor. The Hietzing Station Pavilion is close to the Schönbrunn Palace. Emperor Franz Joseph used the impressive station only a couple of times. The design created by Otto Wagner features a mix of modernist elements and traditional baroque style. The rich ornaments in Art Nouveau style complement the lines of the structure. You can also admire some of the original designs used to erect the structure.
  • See Vienna from above at Donauturm (The Danube Tower). Behold, the highest landmark in Austria. The 827-ft-high structure opened its doors to visitors in 1964 as part of the Danube Park. The classic Viennese coffee house feeling you’ll get in the Tower Café is a good enough reason to visit this attraction, not to mention the unprecedented view of the entire city. The highest point of the tower is the rotating restaurant, which offers traditional Austrian meals. Do try the wine there. To skip the line, get your ticket in advance via this link .

Explore the Unexpected Museums of Vienna

You’ll find weird collections everywhere in the world, but Vienna is home to some unique museums you won’t be able to explore elsewhere.

  • Entertain yourself in Fälschermuseum Wien (The Museum of Art Fakes) . Have you ever visited a forgery museum before? If not, this is your chance. The private collection features artwork by art forgers such as Tom Keating, Edgar Mrugalla, Konrad Kujau, Eric Hebborn, and other famous masters of this craft. The stories The Museum of Art Fakes shares are even more captivating than the paintings themselves. You will learn how one counterfeiter installed time bombs in his fake artworks and other curious details like forging techniques.
  • Feel Worldly at the Globe Museum. The world’s only globe museum is part of Vienna’s top attractions. Located in the Palais Mollard-Clary , the establishment is a couple of minutes away from Hofburg . Once inside, you will admire more than 250 globes, some of which date back to the 16 th century. The exhibits offer a chance to see more than five centuries of cosmographic and cartographic knowledge.
  • Upgrade your psychoanalysis knowledge in the Sigmund Freud Museum. You can visit this curious museum at Berggasse 19 . That’s where Freud lived and worked for almost five years until 1938. The museum was recently rebuilt and expanded, allowing more visitors to enjoy it. Today, you can access the former private rooms of the Freud family. You can also step into Freud’s office and admire the largest psychoanalysis library in Europe. Tip : You can find another museum dedicated to the works of Freud in his last residence in London .
  • Meet your fears in the Torture Museum (Foltermuseum). Museums don’t get more shocking than this one! The vivid exhibit displayed in one of the Augarten Flak Towers – former WWII bunkers – illustrate long-forgotten torture methods and devices. Apart from the medieval means in this collection, there are also modern ones such as waterboarding. All props are convincing enough to give you the chills.
  • Get lost in Haus des Meers (House of the Sea). The impressive public aquarium is another attraction situated in one of the WWII Flak Towers. More than 10,000 marine animals live within an area of 43,000 sq. ft. The attraction is also known as Aqua Terra Zoo . It features a mind-blowing two-story shark tank and a tropical park with crocodiles. If that’s not enough to impress you, there’s always the Ocean Sky Restaurant and Bar which offers a jaw-dropping 360-degree view of the city.
  • Butterfly fan? Visit Das Schmetterlinghaus (The Butterfly House). The Imperial Butterfly House is a magical place situated in the very heart of Vienna. As the name suggests, it offers an exotic environment dominated by more than 400 butterflies. The plants, the waterfalls, and the Art Nouveau style of the building are just a few of the reasons why you should add Das Schmetterlinghaus to your itinerary.
  • Educate yourself at the Museum of Contraception and Abortion. This quite unusual place documents and displays the past of contraception as we know it. The founder, Dr. Christian Fiala, wanted to show the sometimes-unpleasant truth behind abortion and avoiding pregnancy in a country with very high abortion rates. He collected weird or plain absurd means of birth control, such as plugs, soaps, sponges, and washes. Some of these had a fairly negative impact on people, to say the least. You’ll also have the unique chance to see condoms made from sheepskin.
  • Pump up the degrees at Brennpunkt° (Burning Point). Originally known as the Heating Museum of Vienna , this weird place presents the known means of utilizing heat. You’ll learn about the Heizkultur (heating customs) and the ways heat changed human lives. The “hot” collection exhibits boiler and cooling systems, large facilities cooking and heating systems, as well as artistic ovens and historic, everyday kitchen appliances. The interactive section will let you create energy-efficient projects. Before you step inside the gift shop, make sure you see the part of the museum that’s dedicated to the ways people used to make fire across the globe.

Join a Wacky Tour of Vienna’s Heritage

Great examples of tolerance and a unique twist to traditional art forms are just a few of the things you’ll find if you join one of the peculiar tours and parks of Vienna .

  • Join Hitler’s Vienna walking tour . Vienna had a great influence over Adolph Hitler. That’s why there’s a guided tour of the city explaining what happened there around and during WWII. The tour starts at the Albertina Museum. In approximately 2.5 hours, you’ll see the Holocaust memorial and the only synagogue that survived the war, and you’ll learn all about Hitler’s ideology.
  • Explore the Vienna sewer system. Did you know that you can find subterranean rivers and tunnels below the streets of Vienna? What’s more, this amazing underworld was even featured in The Third Man – a 1950s movie starring Orson Welles. You can now enter parts of the historic sewer system which is the most complex of its kind in Europe. The tour starts at Karlsplatz-Girardipark .
  • Have fun in Wurstelprater – the oldest amusement park in the world. Known as Prater Wien , the park is one of Vienna’s symbols, and it’s open 24/7. There is plenty to see here apart from the famous Giant Wheel called Riesenrad . You should ride the Liliputbahn – a narrow railway line that stretches for 2.5 mi (4 km) across the park. Make sure you visit the fascinating and modern Planetarium Prater as well. And the best part? The park is free to enter.
  • Find the unique traffic lights (Ampelpärchen). The Vienna City Council decided to surprise everyone with the Ampelpärchen in 2015, when the city hosted the Eurovision Song Contest. The traffic light couples became a symbol of mutual respect and tolerance. They are among the most unique experiences in Vienna. Discover this awesome attraction at Schwedenplatz, near Karlsplatz , and around the Erzherzog Rainer hotel.
  • Learn to waltz. One of the coolest facts about Vienna is that the city hosts 450+ balls per year ! If you admire the elegance of the waltz, there’s no better place to master the dance than Vienna. You can learn the basics of the Viennese waltz even if you’re on a tight schedule. The blitz waltz lessons offered by the Rueff Dance School are a great opportunity. Sometimes, a single practice is enough to feel the magic. You can try and master dizzying polka there, too. You’ll find the school next to the Rathaus (the City Hall).
  • Relax in Setagaya Park. The enchanting Japanese garden was designed and created in 1992 by Ken Nakajima. Located within a short walking distance from the Heiligenstadt U-Bahn , the garden features cherry blossom trees, maples, ponds, and even a stream. The place brings peace and relaxation, and it’s a nice way to diversify your Vienna itinerary.
  • Satisfy your opera cravings at Volksoper (People’s Opera). Vienna is one of the cradles of opera, so it’s no surprise that the city has several venues offering different kinds of performances. People’s Opera takes an alternative approach to this art. They present unusual pieces and try to be as innovative as possible. The result is 100% worth seeing, as the crew is always up for new experiments, adding a twist to opera as we know it.
  • Visit the Kurpark Oberlaa. Next to Therme Wien and near the Oberlaa subway station is the Kurkonditorei Oberlaa – a magical place with a rich tradition of making scrumptious Viennese pastries. The park around it is enchanting, too. Built in 1974 for the Vienna International Garden Show, it offers an endless variety of flower arrangements and themed gardens. It is also a great place to burn the calories from the pastries you’ve just sampled.

Treat Yourself to Mouthwatering Viennese Temptations

We hope you love food because in this section, you’ll discover the most unique places in Vienna to satiate your gourmet palate.

  • Satiate your sweet cravings in the Chocolate Museum . You don’t necessarily need to have a sweet tooth to visit this attraction. Diving into the world of chocolate includes learning about the harvesting and processing of cacao. You’ll also get an overview of all the types of chocolate in existence today. And the most delicious part? You’ll taste a variety of specialty chocolates. Did we mention the giant chocolate-made statues?
  • Have a drink at Justizcafe. The name gives away the location. This rooftop restaurant takes up the last floor of the Palace of Justice. Once up, be prepared for a heart-stopping 360-degree view of the city center. Justizcafe ’s terrace is the best place to admire landmarks such as the Austrian Parliament , the Hofburg Palace , and the historic Ring Road .
  • Eat your heart out at Das Loft. Gourmet lover? Go to the 18 th floor of the Sofitel Hotel where you’ll find Das Loft . The restaurant offers an immaculate interior with top-to-bottom panoramic windows and jaw-dropping views of Vienna. Tease your palate with a traditional Viennese breakfast or a contemporary evening menu, both prepared by award-winning chefs.
  • Go on a food tour. The options for joining a food tour in Vienna are many and exciting. You can either choose the beaten path and explore traditional Austrian cuisine or opt for a fancier experience and pick a tour around some of the luxury places the city has to offer. There are wine and craft beer tours available, too. Another curious option to consider is a culinary journey around Naschmarkt (The Tasting Market). It is a two-hour journey through different cuisines and cultures, and it includes numerous specialty samples as well.
  • Find the best Sachertorte. Missing the chance to enjoy a slice of Sacher cake while in Vienna is something you will surely and dearly regret. 16-year-old Frank Sacher created the decadent desert in 1832. Peculiarly enough, the recipe remains unchanged to this day. Café Sacher is the absolute best place to enjoy a slice of this heavenly confection.
  • Enjoy a traditional schnitzel. The classic Golden Schnitzel, also known as Vienna cutlet or Viennese schnitzel , is a must-try dish when you’re visiting the Austrian capital. What most parts of the world refer to as schnitzel is nothing compared to the mouthwatering, crispy delight you’ll find in Vienna. One of the best places for your guaranteed foodgasm? The Figmuller restaurant. Their 110-year-old Viennese schnitzel recipe is to die for.

15 Unique Things to Do in Vienna, Austria

From exquisite churches to vast palaces to old European glamour, there’s no doubt that there are plenty of classic things to do in Vienna. But for a solo traveller with a limited budget and equally limited interest in the usual European art and history museums, I’ve got to be honest and say that I wasn’t overly excited about visiting Austria’s capital for week five of my 52 in 52 year-long solo trip .

BUT as the age old saying goes… don’t judge a city by its postcards? It turns out there’s plenty more to Vienna than royal houses and Mozart concerts (although you should probably do those too).

I had a brilliant week in Vienna on my first trip, ticking off the classic tourist bucket list with city tours, food tours and activities, and then I returned for Christmas markets in 2022 and fell even more in love.

Here are some of the best and most unique things to do in Vienna .

Where to stay in Vienna

Budget | On my most recent trip to Vienna I stayed at JO&JOE Vienna , which has firmly secured a spot as one of the best hostels in Europe according to my (somewhat expert) opinion. I stayed in a private room (which was massive and would be very comfortable for an extended stay) but there are great dorm rooms with privacy curtains and shared bathrooms. The common areas were fantastic, ranging from a huge projector for sports games and movies to pool tables to bean bag hang out zones and more.

They also had kitchenettes on each floor (with fridges, a microwave and a kettle) as well as work-friendly spaces if you’re a digital nomad travelling Europe. It was social but not hectic, was totally fine for work but also would be great to meet people with loads of events going on throughout the week. The best of both worlds!

JO&JOE also has locations in France as well as South America and hopefully I’ll be able to check out their other hostels in the near future, but if you’re heading to Vienna on a budget, I honestly can’t recommend them enough.

Mid-range | ARTIST Boutique Hotel , Superbude and Magdas Hotel are all brilliant mid-range options with great reviews, and Hotel Josefine is a perfect hotel for solo travellers with good value single rooms

Luxury | Vienna has some absolutely stunning luxury hotels, including Rosewood Hotel , Park Hyatt , the Leo Grand , Hotel Sans Souci Wien and the iconic Hotel Sacher Wien

Self-catering | WELTWIEN Luxury Art Apartments , Rioca Vienna Posto 2 , Citadines South Vienna and Nadland Apartments B61 are good options with self-catering facilities

1. See the sights with a Vienna city walking tour

A free walking tour is the best way to see any European city when you first arrive. You’ll tick off the main sights, get your bearings and will get to hear all about the city from (usually) a super passionate local. And because the guides work for tips, they’re always at the top of their game!

The best free walking tours in Vienna are run by the legends at Prime Tours , and they happen daily at 11am, 3pm and 6pm, plus a special night tour at 6pm from Wednesday to Sunday. These tours take you to see 20 different spots in Vienna, so you’ll tick off a decent chunk of the tourist hot spots as well as some hidden gems. I normally tip €10 for a Europe walking tour, maybe a bit more if I was really impressed (and if I have extra cash!).

2. Search for the city’s best Sachertorte

Sachertorte, a rich chocolate cake with a bit of apricot jam in the middle, is a Viennese classic that you’ll find at coffeehouses all through the city.

The home to the original Sachertorte is Café Sacher, who create the famous cake exactly as the original recipe from 1832 says. Café Sacher’s cake is delicious, but expect a long queue for a table and higher prices than other parts of the city.

The good news is that there are plenty of incredible Sachertorte cakes to try at various Viennese cafés. I recommend checking out Café Diglas, Café Central and Café Landtmann.

3. Taste the local cuisine with a food tour

And on that note, what’s the second best way to explore a new destination? A food tour!

Food tours are one of my favourite things to do when I travel for a number of reasons. A) Food, obviously. B) You’ll learn so much about the culture and history of the place you’re visiting, and you’ll see exactly how the cuisine ties into that. C) You discover all the best local secrets of where to eat and what to order, which you can then return to for the rest of your trip!

I was kindly hosted by Prime Tours to try one of their Culinary Kickbike tours, where you ride through the city taste-testing a couple of local specialties. We tried cheese, bread, the most delicious sausages, sachertorte, Viennese coffee and more, all while getting in a bit of exercise to keep us from going into a food coma. It’s a win win!

They also offer a walking tour through the bustling Naschmarkt if you prefer your food tours with less physical movement (no judgement, I don’t blame you!).

4. Learn about one of the original solo female travellers, Empress Sisi

Elisabeth of Austria was the wife of Emperor Franz Joseph I, which made her Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary. She wasn’t a fan of the rigid rules and regulations that came with royal life, so she escaped her responsibilities by travelling solo. Legend!

Her life story is fascinating and is best discovered with this Sisi Walking Tour which includes entry to the Sisi Museum in Hofburg Palace.

5. Keep an eye out for unique traffic lights

Vienna was home to the Eurovision song contest back in 2015, and to celebrate the city being a place of openness, tolerance and diversity, hundreds of pedestrian walking lights were swapped out to represent gay and lesbian couples. See if you can spot some while you’re wandering around the city!

6. Ride the rollercoasters at Prater

With a first mention in an old document from 1162, and then being gifted to the public in 1766 by Josef the II, Prater is the oldest amusement park in the world.

It boasts a giant ferris wheel from 1897, the world’s highest flying swing at 117 metres, and loads of other rides for visitors of all ages. Prater is free to enter so you just pay for the individual rides you want to go on, which will be anywhere from €4 to €12.

7. See the exquisite State Hall at Austria’s National Library

While my budget doesn’t often allow me to go to the main paid attractions in each city I visit, the State Hall at the National Library was absolutely worth it for €8.

It’s a huge room lined with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, along with some ancient works of writing, marble statues and stunning frescoes painted in the dome between the two wings.

8. Learn to waltz at 11.11am on 11 November

If you happen to be in the capital on 11 November, head to Graben Boulevard in the city centre to witness the official opening of the Carnival season with a public waltz kicking off at 11.11am on the dot. Got two left feet? Don’t worry, there’ll be a couple of the city’s best dance teachers there to show you how it’s done!

TRAVEL TIP:

I find all my flights using Skyscanner ! You’ll get the best deal if you’re flexible on where to go. Just put in your origin, your departure date (or month) and type ‘everywhere’ into the destination bar to see the cheapest locations to fly to on your next holiday.

9. Go behind the scenes at a brewery

Ottakringer, one of Vienna’s most loved beers, offers tours at its brewery right in the city. Learn about the history of Ottakringer, see exactly how the beer is made, and finish up with a beer tasting.

10. Get a cheap lunch from a würstelstand

You’ll see würstelstands on almost every corner in the city centre, and they’re a budget traveller’s best friend. Würstelstands are street food stalls with super cheap sausages and drinks! I’m a huge fan of the käsekrainer, a sausage with cheese inside it, grilled to perfection. You can thank me later.

11. See another side of the city with the Hitler’s Vienna walking tour

The 2.5 hour Hitler’s Vienna walking tour will teach you all about Hitler’s upbringing, his escalation into being the most evil man on the planet, and the horrific impact that WWII had on Vienna and its Jewish community.

You’ll see war memorials, Heroes’ Square, the only Synagogue that survived the Nazi regime, and loads more. This is definitely one for the history buffs.

12. Eat a giant piece of schnitzel

Wiener schnitzel with potato salad is one of Vienna’s most popular dishes, so you can’t come here without trying a hearty piece of meat cooked in golden breadcrumbs.

Schnitzel is on the menu at every restaurant that serves Austrian cuisine, so it’s not hard to find. I had a wiener schnitzel at the famous Figlmüller, where they serve over 200,000 schnitzels a year, and each one is bigger than the plate it’s being served on!

If you’re not keen to wait in the Figlmüller line then you could try Gasthaus Kopp, Schnitzelwirt or Restaurant Pürstner.

Lots of schnitzel piled on top of each other at a family dinner table

13. See the sunset from the tower at St Stephen’s Cathedral

After a month of European cities I was pretty church-ed out, but St Stephen’s is super unique and well worth a visit.

The inside is incredibly impressive but unfortunately (like most of Vienna it turns out!) it was covered in scaffolding, so I headed straight up the tower for €5.50, just in time to catch a stunning sunset.

You get a brilliant view of Vienna’s Old Town from the tower, and at 8pm on a late summer’s evening I was able to catch the sky turn from blue to purple to orange, reflecting off the mind-blowing tile work on the cathedral’s roof. Really beautiful, something I’d absolutely recommend adding to your Vienna must-dos.

14. Explore more of Austria

If you’ve got a bit of extra time, or you need a break from the big city, you can easily jump on a day tour from Vienna to see another part of Austria.

Go on a Sound of Music tour in Salzburg, see the postcard-perfect views in stunning Hallstatt , cruise along the river in the Danube Valley or see a darker side of the country with a visit to a nearby concentration camp .

Book any Vienna day trips or activities on Klook, they have a price guarantee!

15. Go further afield

Vienna’s central location makes it possible to see a number of other European gems in a day if you’re willing to get up early and return home late. I did a Bratislava day trip, but you could also see Budapest , Prague , and even Ljubljana and Lake Bled in Slovenia.

Unique things to do in Vienna

Travel like a local

While classical music is Vienna’s claim to fame, there’s more things to do in the Austrian capital than learn about Mozart and Beethoven. As proper, stately, and beautiful as it is here along the Danube River, there’s a creative side that has breathed modern life into Vienna (which may be one of the reasons it has been named one of the most liveable cities in the world). Go beyond traditional tours and activities for a local’s perspective of Vienna with Airbnb Experiences.

Your guide to vienna, where do locals hang out in vienna.

Most locals are content shopping, dining, and hitting the bars in their own bezirk (or district), but the metro can quickly whisk you from one spot to the next for those who want to get out and explore the city center. In the winter, you’ll find locals huddled in cozy bars and cafes in places such as the 4th district, or out enjoying Christkindlmarkt and Schönbrunn, among other Christmas markets around the city. And for shopping, most locals don’t mind sharing either the streets of Mariahilferstrasse.

What are the most unique things to do in Vienna?

Go to a classical piano concert.

Musicians host you at Sala Terrena, the oldest concert hall in Vienna near St. Stephen's Cathedral, and the venue where Mozart played to earn enough money to rent his first apartment. For a performance in a different setting, head to a small art gallery, with a grand piano on stage, to enjoy original and classic arrangement by an acclaimed pianist.

Learn to cook schnitzel and strudel

Your local guide shares their grandmother’s recipes and lets you in on the secret to making the crispiest schnitzel and the crunchiest apfelstrudel (apple strudel). Discuss Austrian cuisine and more over a 2- or 3-course meal.

Take a tour to learn about the spies of Vienna

Expect to retrace bold plans, and find signs and clues hidden in plain sight that represent a dark time in the country’s history. At the end, you will know more than enough to be dangerous on the topic.

Kayak or bike in Vienna

Experience another perspective on the water or on two wheels. Tandem kayaks out on the Danube River are a fun local activity in the warmer months; meanwhile the city’s bikeable streets can lead you to hidden gems faster than on foot.

What are the best day trips from Vienna?

Whether you’re visiting or have lived in Vienna all your life, a day of wine tasting in the Weinviertel region, known for grüner veltliner, is a pleasant escape from city life. Day tours depart from downtown Vienna, allowing you to enjoy a full day with round-trip transportation.

For those who want to get outdoors, enjoy the World Heritage Trails around the charming medieval village of Spitz. During the 3-hour hike, you’ll walk a rollercoaster of hills, passing vineyards, elm oak, pine tree forests, and beautiful rock formations along the way. At the end, enjoy wine and a snack in a local tavern before your local guide brings you back to Vienna.

WHERE AND WHEN?

About your guide.

I’ve been living in Vienna for 24 years, but originally I was born in Budapest. I fell in love with the city during my studies in Music at the University of Vienna and while I was performing concerts here. I decided to start a new course to become a professional tour guide and since 2003, I have been working as a qualified and a passionate Austrian Tour Guide. I’m fascinated by Vienna's history, its musical heritage and all the romantic places of the city. Did you know that until 1918 Hungary and Austria used to be one country? For me, the fact that I’m Hungarian makes working in Vienna - as a tour guide - even more meaningful. My aim is to impress visitors with the beauty of Vienna, an international, multicultural city where history, imperial heritage and modernity blend together seamlessly. When I’m not working as a music teacher and tour guide, I love nature, excursions, being outside, sport, reading, history and spending time with family and friends. I am very much looking forward to sharing my passion for this magnificent place with you. See You in Vienna!

Best things to do and see in Vienna

Vienna , capital of Austria , is one of the most charming cities in central Europe being the second most populous, after Berlin. Crossed by the Danube River that records its main streets, it is located in the easternmost part of the country in the area of the Vienna Forest Valley , the feet of where the imposing Alps mountains stand. It has a unique cultural and artistic legacy, having as principal references Mozart, Beethoven or Sigmund Freud himself. On an architectural level, it stands out for its imposing imperial palaces, especially that of Schönbrunn, which acts as a summer residence for the Habsburgs. In the Museumsquartier district you can admire works by such renowned artists as Egon Schiele or Gustav Klimt. If you want to know in depth the Austrian capital, it is very advisable to do it together with an official local guide on one of the free tours in Vienna . You can discover not only the essential places, but also its history and all the curiosities that make each corner an exciting adventure. The routes that register the historical center pass through places such as the Schönbrunn Palace , the Hofburg Imperial Palace or the Vienna Cathedral . Without forgetting other points of interest that are also worth visiting such as the Belvedere Palace, the State Opera, the Museum of Art History, the Prater, the Albertina Museum, the Schönbrunn Zoo, the Museumsquartier , the Austrian Parliament, Ringstrasse Avenue, the Church of San Carlos Borromeo or the Museum of Imperial Carriages. In most opinions about free walking tours in Vienna , the beauty of the tours is usually highlighted, whatever the theme of them. Guided tours in this city in central Europe can be done at any time of the year, although in the colder months you have to go warm. Forget Paris — Vienna Is The Perfect Year-Round European Getaway

An unsung travel hero.

vienna travel tips

With an abundance of museums, historical landmarks, and trendy neighborhoods, it’s no surprise that Vienna is at the top of everyone’s European bucket lists . The city, which comes alive in all the seasons, is particularly magical in the summer. It’s filled with greenery, people are out and about, and the weather is perfect. However, the Christmas markets, snow-covered historical architecture, and cozy Austrian dishes make it just as appealing for a wintertime visit.

As the music capital of the world, Vienna draws in visitors from around the world to experience its year-round orchestra performances. Classical music legends, ranging from Beethoven to Mozart all made their original debut in Vienna. The city also has over 280 parks scattered throughout the city, making more than half the metropolitan area green spaces. Whether you’re looking to snack on a warm slice of Sachertorte, visit one of the many gorgeous museums of palaces , or drink local wines by a warm fireplace, here are some tips for making your trip to Vienna truly memorable.

Earlier in the year, my mother and I finally pulled the trigger and booked tickets to the Austrian capital. We planned our itinerary based on things we both loved, incorporating a mixture of art, culture, and shopping. The real reason for our visit, however, was to experience the magic of the famed Christmas Markets — which were worth the hype. After our visit, I can say for certain that the city makes the perfect year-round getaway for a mother-daughter trip, girls' weekend, or romantic escape.

vienna travel tips

To get an inside look at the city, we booked tours with Rebel Tours Vienna (a brother-sister duo with tons of knowledge of the city). We selected the duo because they interestingly explained the city to both of us, catering the tours to the things we told them we were interested in. In addition, we arranged a second tour with Shopping with Lucie , an American transplant who moved to Vienna and takes visitors to local designers, shops, and hidden gems throughout the city. It was super interactive and incorporated visits to shops that we both loved, including a local home decor retailer for my mom and local up-and-coming designers for me.

Visits to the Vienna State Opera House, Albertina Museum, and Leopold Museum were other things on our itinerary. We also incorporated stops at the famous Schönbrunn Palace and Belvedere Palace since they both highlighted the rich history of Vienna. We visited all the magical Christmas Markets but would swap out this activity for tastings at nearby local wineries in the warmer months. The wineries are a short Metro ride away from the city yet feel like an alternate reality.

vienna travel tips

To get around, we walked or used the Metro. The public transportation in Vienna is like nothing I’ve ever experienced. It was affordable, clean, easy to use, and offered quick transport to everywhere in the city. While some traffic-heavy destinations are harder to navigate, the prime location of our hotel and conveniently located Metro stations throughout the city made it a breeze to get practically anywhere.

During our visit, we opted to stay in the Rosewood Vienna , a 99-room property with a location on Petersplatz, one of the most famous squares in Old Town Vienna. Since it was so centrally located, we could walk to almost all the main sites. Housed in a 19th-century building, the property was built inside the former home of legendary composer Mozart. The rooms are spacious, featuring a neutral color palette with a design that plays an ode to the glamour of Vienna’s history. Suffice to say: The rich history and gorgeous, modern design were a hit with both me and my mother.

vienna travel tips

Vienna also has a burgeoning food scene, but a few spots stood out as truly exceptional. Demel , a famous pastry shop and chocolateria that was established in 1786 served up our favorite Kaiserschmarrn (a famous pancake dish from Vienna that’s topped with plum). For dinner, we adored Neue Hoheit Brasserie, a rooftop restaurant inside the Rosewood that has an extensive Austrian wine list, and Cafè Ritter , a 100+-year-old spot serving up traditional Viennese cuisine.

Ultimately, I wouldn’t have changed a thing if I visited the city alone. At the end of the day, the memories made with my mom are irreplaceable. The city is filled with hidden gems in the cultural scene, ranging from music to art-focused activities. It’s also a great place to enjoy the sunshine or bundle up and sip a cup of warm mulled wine in the winter. Regardless of when you visit the music-filled city, you can’t go wrong with a visit to Vienna.
