Voyager's lead singer Danny Estrin reveals cancer diagnosis and cancels European tour
Australian progressive metal band Voyager's frontman, Danny Estrin, has revealed a "life-altering" cancer diagnosis, as the band cancels its upcoming European tour.
Key points:
- Estrin, who is the Perth band's lead singer, shared his "life-altering" cancer diagnosis
- The band has cancelled an upcoming European tour with hopes to reschedule in October 2024
- Its last performance will be at the America's Cup Event in Fremantle on Sunday
Estrin, who is the Perth band's lead singer, shared the announcement on the band's official Instagram account on Friday.
"Last week I was dealt some life-altering news: I've been diagnosed with cancer that requires immediate treatment," he wrote.
"I am absolutely devastated that we cannot perform on our forthcoming European tour, especially after this incredible Eurovision year we've had.
"I am on strict doctors' orders to not take this lightly, put my health first and get this sorted so we can be on stage again as soon as possible."
Estrin said it had been an "extremely hard decision to make" and the band's upcoming European tour would be rescheduled to October 2024.
"Voyager will perform our last show for a while at the America's Cup Event in Fremantle, Western Australia this Sunday 24 September 2023, so come and party with us before I start treatment," he added.
"I'm surrounded by my incredible bandmates and team who are navigating all things Voyager whilst I am out of action."
The band was Australia's lead contender at the 2023 Eurovision , making the grand final and eventually finishing ninth.
The band has had its fair amount of changes throughout its lifetime.
Voyager parted ways with bass player Jennah Greaig in 2004 and his replacement, Melissa Fiocco, was later replaced with Alex Canion after the release of the album uniVers.
In June 2008, guitarist Mark De Vattimo quit Voyager due to personal and professional differences.
Guitarists Chris Hanssen and Scott Kay and drummer Mark Boeijen soon followed.
A June Australian tour saw sold-out shows nationwide, with the Perth performance needing to move to a larger venue to accommodate demand.

'Love, your fierce friend, Danny': Voyager frontman Danny Estrin reveals shock cancer diagnosis as band cancels international tour
The frontman for Aussie metal band, who represented Australia at Eurovision this year, has been diagnosed with cancer and will undergo emergency surgery next week.
Voyager rocker Danny Estrin has announced he is suffering from cancer and will postpone the band’s upcoming international tour to begin treatment.
The 41-year-old lead singer, keytar player and immigration lawyer received the life-changing news on the eve of the band’s upcoming European tour.
Estrin did not specify what type of cancer he is suffering from but said the disease “requires immediate treatment”.
“Last week I was dealt some life-altering news: I’ve been diagnosed with a form of cancer that requires immediate treatment,” Estrin said in a public statement.
“I am absolutely devastated that we cannot perform on our forthcoming European tour, especially after this incredible Eurovision year we’ve had.
“I am on strict doctors’ orders to not take this lightly, put my health first and get this sorted so that we can be on stage again as soon as possible.
“This has been an extremely hard decision to make,” the star concluded, “but one that everyone will hopefully understand.”
The rock group, who formed in Perth back in 1999, represented Australia at this year’s Eurovision song contest and finished in a respectable ninth place.
The band’s Eurovision entry, a metal track called “Promise”, became a chart hit in several European countries and Voyager’s first entry on the UK Singles Chart.
Estrin and his bandmates Simone Dow, Scott Kay, Ashley Doodkorte and Alex Canion have also been riding high on a wave of sold-out gigs since the Eurovision appearance, including a successful national tour in June.
With the European tour now cancelled, the father-of-two will perform with Voyager one last time this weekend before entering treatment.
“Voyager will perform our last show for a while at the America’s Cup Event in Fremantle, Western Australia this Sunday 24 September 2023,” he wrote to fans on the group’s official social media accounts.
“Come and party with us before I start treatment.
“Love, your fierce friend, Danny!”
Following the diagnosis, Voyager’s international dates have been tentatively pushed back until late 2024, while Australian dates in February will remain unaffected until the band get a clearer picture of Estrin’s health.

The unsettling news comes after an incredibly successful year for the group who represented Australia at Eurovision and released their new album Fearless In Love . The timing of the diagnosis, less than two weeks ahead of their European tour, means that the tour is now postponed until late 2024.
The band shared the unexpected and troubling news via a statement today, with Estrin indicating that the diagnosis came as quite a shock.

Popular punk rock band member dead at 45 after battle with cancer

- Ben Flanagan | [email protected]
Adam Lewis, a cofounding member of and original bass player for the popular 1990s and 2000s Houston-based punk rock band Fenix TX, has passed away.
He was 45. PennLive reports Lewis died on June 5.
“The Fenix TX family is heartbroken by the passing of our friend Adam Lewis after losing his battle with pancreatic cancer,” the band’s Instagram post said on June 11.
“We are heartbroken,” the Fenix TX Instagram caption said. “There are no words that will do justice to the life Adam lived. A memorial fund has been created in his honor to care for the family he loved so dearly. We will do our best to honor his final wishes and make him proud. We love you Adam Lewis.”
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Adam Bryce Lewis,” the post continued. “Original founding member and bass player of pop-punk MCA/Drive-Thru recording artist Fenix TX, Adam passed away June 5, 2024, surrounded by his family and close friends, after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer.”
Lewis is survived by his life partner, Adrieanne Guerrero, and their children, Lennon and Sloane, the post says.
Born in Texas in 1979, Lewis spent his early years in Houston where he met Damon De La Paz, William Salazar, and Donnie Reyes, and formed Riverfenix (later re-named Fenix TX). They later moved to California for closer proximity to their management MCA/Drive-Thru and the local music scene.
The band recorded several albums including self-titled 1999 release, which reached number three on Billboard’s “Top Heatseekers” chart.

90s music legend reveals harrowing message she got from Dario G weeks before his death
Share this with
After Dario G’s death aged 53 , fellow 90s legend Sonique has revealed a devastating conversation she had with her friend and collaborator.
Dario G, real name Paul Spencer, had been diagnosed with stage four rectal cancer in June last year.
The music icon was best known for his hits like Sunchyme and Carnaval de Paris , dominating the dance scene in the 90s.
His family broke the news on Monday, June 17, sharing that Spencer had ‘remained positive until the end’ and left behind a ‘wonderful music legacy’.
After paying tribute on his Instagram , Sonique told Metro.co.uk she had spoken to her friend just three weeks before his death.
‘A couple of tears did have to drop out but I knew what was happening,’ the It Feels So Good singer revealed.
‘We were close enough that I spoke to him about three weeks ago,’ the 53-year-old artist continued. ‘He did ask me “Don’t tell anyone” and he said, “You know, it’s bad”.
‘So I knew, but I promised him that I wasn’t going to tell anyone. I was almost prepared for that to happen but it was difficult.
‘That was the saddest [memory].’
The pair collaborated on a song in 2021 called Keep On Lovin’ which urges listeners to embrace positivity and to reach out to each other.
Over the years their musical talents meant the duo were constantly crossing paths and formed a professional friendship.
Sonique called them ‘geeks in fancy clothing’, sharing how she bonded with Spencer over their deep appreciation of music as an art form.
She laughed as she reminisced: ‘We’d have long discussions about music because you know, music people are really just geeks disguised in fancy clothes, hiding behind sunglasses.
‘We just sat there just talking about on the phone [or wherever] just talking about music and sounds and harmonies and what sounds you wanted. We just went on and on and on about it.’
Sonique told us one of her fondest memories is discovering how talented Spencer was on the piano and as a songwriter and musician.
They were in the studio one day and he ‘just started playing that piano’, surprising and impressing the Brit Award winner.
‘I had no idea,’ she confessed. ‘He’s very talented, you’d see him there and he’s just he’s an absolute genius.
‘He’s an accomplished musician and a great songwriter. I don’t think people really knew that and I didn’t realise until we were working together.
‘When we were doing all these harmonies, he knew all the harmonies, I was just like, “Wow”. I was just so impressed with that and was just thinking “This guy’s really cool”.’
Sonique reiterated what a great ‘talent’ Spencer was, citing how the world reacted to his loss as evidence of his lasting legacy.
Choking up slightly, she concluded: ‘It was hard but I knew even then [three weeks ago] it was… it was not good.’
The Can’t Make Up My Mind singer is one of many, including DJ Sigala, who has shared a tribute to the late, great Dario G.
On the Instagram post announcing his death, she wrote: ‘Rest in peace my friend. We will miss you, that’s for sure.’

Honeybees can detect lung cancer in humans: Research
( NewsNation ) — Bad breath may say a lot about you. But soon, it could help determine if you have lung cancer — if a honeybee gets a whiff.
Researchers at Michigan State University have discovered that honeybees can detect the chemicals associated with lung cancer in a person’s breath.
“Insects have an amazing sense of smell the same way dogs do,” said Debajit Saha, an assistant professor at MSU’s Institute for Quantitative Health Science and Engineering, in a release from the university.
Saha’s team developed a “recipe” for a synthetic breath mixture using different levels of six compounds. One version created the breath of a healthy human, and another created the chemical makeup of the breath of someone with lung cancer.
Using a special harness to hold a live honeybee, researchers attached a tiny electrode to the bee’s brain to measure changes in brain signals.
“We pass those odors on to the antenna of the honeybees and recorded the neural signals from their brain,” said Saha. “We (saw) a change in the honeybee’s neural firing response.”
The researchers detected several different neurons firing in the bees’ brains, which showed a clear difference between smelling the synthetic lung cancer breath and the healthy breath.
The plan is to use this research to develop a sensor that mimics the honeybee brain. That would be used in a device patients would breathe into, and the device would report in real time if cancer chemicals are present.
Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in the U.S., trailing only prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women. The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 234,000 new cases of lung cancer will be detected this year, and about 125,000 people will die from it.
