Sober Tours: How to Hit the Road and Stay on the Wagon

Sober Musician Tours Rock n Roll

In  Variety ‘s Recovery Issue, prominent entertainment figures offer insights on navigating a sober life in Hollywood. For more, click here .

In an industry known for the mantra “sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll,” it’s hard enough for addicted musicians to get sober, but staying sober, especially on the road, can seem next to impossible. At least it did before manager Tim Collins designed an early blueprint for the Dry Tour, in which musicians, crew members and other key staff commit to sobriety and serving as a support system for one another.

Collins’ effort was shaped by a 1985-86 tour that he did while managing Aerosmith that he describes today as “a real s— show” that involved “insane drugs and alcohol.”

Afterward, Collins spent a couple weeks drying out at the Canyon Ranch facility in Tucson, Ariz., when he says he realized, “‘Wow, I want to be sober.’ And I got sober. Then I came back and set up interventions for [Aerosmith].”

Miraculously, the entire band got clean. “Three of them went to treatment — but not willingly,” says Collins. The other two did it the old-fashioned way by attending 12-step recovery meetings.

Popular on Variety

After that, Collins had to pull off another seemingly impossible feat: Devising a plan to keep five alcoholics sober for nearly a year on the road.

He managed to assemble a sober crew and tracked down an interventionist and a doctor with experience in addiction. He hired a former Arizona state trooper to serve as road manager. The band was escorted to the outside entry of 12-step meetings while on the road, and backstage the members participated in group therapy sessions.

“We created this wonderful business model that surrounded them with recovery,” Collins says.

Variations of the dry tour model Collins developed have continued to help newly sober artists for decades. One veteran tour manager, Chuck Randall, even specializes in uniting sober artists, technicians and crew members. Billy Morrison, longtime guitarist for Billy Idol and a former member of The Cult, who is 24 years sober, is among the artists who were helped on their journey by a dry tour.

While the concept has “morphed over the last 20 years,” Morrison says, certain principles are maintained. There is no alcohol or drug use by anyone, including crew members — at least in the vicinity of the band — and alcohol is removed from mini-bars in hotels, “nothing on the rider, nothing on the plane,” he says. “It is definitely easier if the bass player isn’t cracking open the tequila after every show, or if the road crew aren’t bending over to do a rail every five seconds.”

Despite his long-term sobriety, Morrison has never forgotten what it felt like immediately after he stopped drinking. “An artist in early sobriety is full of fear, doubting how this touring thing will work without that familiar crutch,” he says. “So a dry tour removes the temptation and gives the artist a chance to realize that it’s way more fun, and the results — the performances, the musicianship — all get better without the drugs and alcohol.”

For some, the ravages of addiction are so strong that even the environment of a dry tour isn’t enough to prevent a relapse. Dave Kushner, the Emmy-nominated composer of the “Sons of Anarchy” theme, recalls the heartbreak of touring with the supergroup Velvet Revolver, whose members included Slash and Scott Weiland, the Stone Temple Pilots singer who died of a drug overdose in 2015.

“There was a point where everyone in the band was sober,” says Kushner, who has been sober for 29 years. Velvet Revolver set out in 2006 on a dry tour, as suggested by their managers.

Dry tour specialist Chuck Randall set up an arena trek that made scheduling time for recovery efforts as much a priority as soundcheck before the show. Some band members still struggled.

“That tour was as dry as you could get,” says Kushner, adding that Randall arranged 12-step meetings backstage and offered other means of sober support. “It absolutely did reduce the amount of temptation because the temptation was just eliminated.”

But to paraphrase an old adage: You can lead a rock star to recovery but you can’t stop him from drinking.

“Dude, I have a video of [one member] f—ing nodding out in the middle of a song,” says Kushner.

Mike Inez, bassist with hard rock outfit Alice in Chains, describes touring as “a grueling marathon” under the best of circumstances. He remembers the fear that gripped him as he prepared to play his first show after getting sober a decade ago.

“It was this big festival in Perth, Australia. I was extremely nervous because I had never played a show without having a drink or two to loosen up,” Inez recalls. “Turns out, everything was cool. My anxiety was in my own head.”

In Morrison’s experience, a dry tour is better for everyone involved.

“The differences are often quite subtle, like the whole band turning up for soundcheck or guitars actually being in tune,” he says. “And I would say that less TVs get thrown out of hotel windows — that’s for sure.”

High school gyms and Hull's Surf Nantasket: Aerosmith book chronicles band's early tours

aerosmith the cult tour

While we all dig out from the latest Snowmageddon and dream of when the world will finally get back to normal and we can hear live music again, there’s a new treasure for rock fans, a deep dive back into the earliest days of Aerosmith , the storied rock band with South Shore roots.

Julian Gill’s “Aerosmith – On Tour 1973-85” came out in December from  DeJulien Publishing, a 612-page labor of love that traces the band’s career from its earliest days through its first dozen years of prominence.

Obviously, fans might be thinking that there have been several books covering the band’s history and autobiographical tomes from almost all the principals. Gill even salutes Milton author Stephen Davis’ acclaimed “Walk This Way” as the premier – and official – band bio. This is different, not even as much a formal history but a delectable compendium of memories and memorabilia, concert reports and showbills, newspaper ads and reviews of the band from a wide variety of sources.

As Gill notes in his introduction, this volume is not a biography of the band, and not just a gossipy he said/he said, and the author does not consider himself an Aerosmith insider. His aim has been to collect a raw compendium of literally everything he could find about the band, its formative years and its progress. It contains a daunting list of shows performed, with attendance figures, set lists when available, receipts if possible and who else was on the bill that night.

Rock star real estate: Aerosmith's Joe Perry lists Duxbury property for $4.5 million

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

The book does not aim to simply present a list of bootleg recordings of some of those shows, but it does make note of when shows were recorded or videotaped. The book is arranged chronologically from the band's earliest days to the days after the January 1973 release of its  eponymous debut album and then album by album through 1985.

Fans will like the way Gill presents excerpts from other works; he simply cites the source immediately in parenthesis. Looking over all these band artifacts is fascinating and Gill has it made it accessible. One old ad touting a show in Willimantic, Connecticut, in the mid-1970s has the club featuring Wheatstraw right after Aerosmith. Local fans know Wheatstraw was the band fronted by Cohasset songsmith Chuck McDermott, who is still making compelling music, including the 2021 album we just cited in our Best Albums of the Year.

A musical 'time warp'

“I’m a massive collector,” Gill said by phone from his San Francisco home. “I’m the publisher because this book is a little dense. I’m not selling salacious details, but a lot of technical details, so most publishers wouldn’t be interested. With all the other books already out, including from band members, I try to let them be the ones to tell their story, and just add contemporaneous details from that time. Referring to the band members’ autobiographies, I’m not trying to prove or disprove anything that’s in them, but try to point out where they diverge, or where someone may have conflated things that happened at a different time.”

Hollywood comes to Braintree: 'Boston Strangler' films at old Foster School

Looking at the band’s origins, it probably always surprises people to realize that singer Steven Tyler came from a musical family, with a father who was a classical pianist. Tyler  had already had a bit of a rock career before joining his eventual bandmates, including in a New York City rock group called Strangers, or for a more exotic sound, Strangeurs. That outfit opened for The Yardbirds and The Lovin’ Spoonful in the New York area. Tyler, numerous sources say, is the consummate perfectionist, whose demand for getting it right frequently drove his bandmates mad.

Guitarist Joe Perry , meanwhile, was growing up in Hopedale and the two stars met during summer gigs, particularly at the music camp run by Tyler’s father. By 1970, Perry had moved to Boston with his trio, to  an apartment at 1325 Commonwealth Ave.  Drummer Joey Kramer and bassist Tom Hamilton also landed in Boston, and the band found each other.

Blues queen Shemekia Copeland: 'I look forward so much to coming to Plymouth'

Legendary night at Nipmuc

Accounts vary on how the principals came together after that, and Gill’s book offers several of the conflicting accounts. Guitarist Raymond Tabano, who had a leather shop in Boston that provided more income than the other guys at that point, was an early key player but would soon be replaced by Brad Whitford. Rehearsing in a Boston University basement space, the band soon began playing actual shows, and those early months show a lot of gigs at the Lakeview Ballroom on Route 16 in Mendon after their legendary maiden gig at Nipmuc Regional High School in Mendon.

By 1972,  Aerosmith was playing pretty regularly, although some of those local venues were unique, and reviews from the time are often hilariously pretentious. One fall 1972 gig had the band playing K-K-K-Katy’s in Kenmore Square with Elvis impersonator Golden Joe Baker headlining the next night. When the band returned to play the club for four nights in a row in December, the ad in The Boston Globe listed them as "Arrowsmith."

'One region at a time'

By the end of ’72, of course, Aerosmith had their record deal with Columbia Records, and their eponymous debut, recorded at Intermedia Sound on Newbury Street in Boston, was released in January 1973. Who remembers that their record got scant PR because its release came on the same day some kid from New Jersey named Springsteen released his much-ballyhooed Columbia debut?

Even though Aerosmith's debut included “Dream On,” neither the single nor the album would be an immediate hit, so the band had to hit the road again and win audiences over night by night. A March ’73 show found them at Paul’s Mall on Boylston Street in Boston, normally a jazz club, during a week  when they were squeezed in between pop singer Hoyt Axton and soulman Billy Paul.

A tour opening for the Mahavishnu Orchestra didn’t work out – far different styles of music and audiences – but a later one with The Kinks was better and when Aerosmith got a chance to open for Mott the Hoople, things began to take off.

South Shore stars: 2022 will be a big year for entertainers with local connections

“They became popular one region at a time, first Boston and New Hampshire, and then further out,” noted Gill. “You see that having to hone your skills in front of a confrontational audience, such as they faced on that Mahavishnu tour, helped them grow as musicians. Mott the Hoople was on the way down but that was a good match of audiences.”

Hull and Stonehill College gigs

By August the band was opening for Sha Na Na before 35,000 fans at Suffolk Downs, and a Globe review called Tyler “a pseudo Mick Jagger” while dismissing their music as geared to “the bubblegum set.” There’s a notation of a Sept. 21 show at The Surf in Nantasket Beach, just before a Sept. 29 show at Boston College filled McHugh Forum beyond its  5,500 capacity. Two shows at the Orpheum Theatre  in Boston opening for Mott the Hoople were sellouts at the end of October. There is not much info about a Nov. 11 show at Stonehill College but a noise complaint someone lodged indicates the show happened.

“Writers in the ‘70s seemed to be having a contest; how to insult Steven Tyler the most,” Gill said, laughing. “He never denied his debt to Mick Jagger. But those reviews are very colorful and reading them is like entering a time warp.”

But that debut album kept building as “Dream On” belatedly became a hit single and the album went gold in September 1975. The album finally got as high No. 21 on the charts in 1976, spending 59 weeks on the charts, and achieved platinum status in 1986.

In 1974, their second album, “Get Your Wings,” was released. It was more popular almost right away and it went gold little more than a year later. By ’75, their third album, “Toys in the Attic,” was riding high and Aerosmith was headlining a sold-out Boston Garden. But all that later success started with those first years of relentless touring, performing anywhere they could.

Jazzing it up: 7 cool new albums to help get your groove on

Tyler hitches home from Bourne

One of our favorite anecdotes noted in the book involved a couple of area dates from February 1974. On  Feb. 9, Aerosmith played at Mass. Maritime Academy and the next night they performed at Southern Mass. University in Dartmouth. But the second gig violated a no-compete-within-30-miles clause in their contract for the Mass. Maritime Academy show, so the band didn’t get paid that night. Whether that upset him or, as the opening band’s drummer claimed, he just did it for a lark, Tyler ended up hitchhiking home from Bourne.

Along with all the detailed dates, statistics and set lists in the book, that’s the kind of humanizing nuance that makes it so engrossing. You might think it is just a book for Aerosmith devotees, but then after being engrossed in it for an hour or more, you realize it really is a fascinating record of an unforgettable time in rock history.

Aerosmith announces massive North American farewell tour

Aerosmith's "the peace out tour" kicks off in september, and features 40 north american dates.

It’s the end of the road for Aerosmith— literally. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees have announced a farewell tour , “The Peace Out Tour,” set to kick off in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 2, and wrap up on January 26 in Montreal, Quebec.

The tour—which spans 40 dates across North America—will feature the Black Crowes as an opening act. In classically high-drama, high-octane fashion, the group announced the tour with a teaser video reflecting mass unrest across the world—and cameos from Ringo Starr, Eminem, Kelly Clarkson, and more—after news breaks that Aerosmith will finally, well, peace out.

“It’s not goodbye it’s PEACE OUT!” the band shared in a joint statement via Instagram. “Get ready and walk this way, you’re going to get the best show of our lives.”

Comprised of singer Steven Tyler, bassist Tom Hamilton, drummer Joey Kramer, and guitarists Joe Perry and Ray Tabano, Aerosmith was first formed back in 1970. Tabano departed the group early in their career, and was replaced by Brad Whitford ahead of Aerosmith’s debut album in 1973. Since then, the band has gone on to release 15 studio albums, the most recent of which came out over a decade ago in 201 2.

As with Aerosmith’s 2022 Las Vegas residency, Kramer will not perform with the band on the farewell tour. In a separate statement, Aerosmith shares: “While Joey Kramer remains a beloved founding member of Aerosmith, he has regrettably made the decision to sit out the currently scheduled touring dates to focus his full attention on his family and health. Joey’s unmistakable and legendary presence behind the drum kit will be sorely missed.”

Aerosmith’s last hurrah comes at a decidedly turbulent time for Tyler, who was sued in December 2022 by Julia Misley, who alleged she and Tyler had an intimate relationship that began in 1973 when she was sixteen years old. (For what it’s worth, Tyler corroborates Misley’s age, if not her identity, in his 2004 memoir Does The Noise In My Head Bother You?.  I n the book, Tyler describes taking a teen girl on tour and engaging with sexual activity with her, writing : “I was so in love I almost took a teen bride.”) Misley accused Tyler of sexual assault, sexual battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress; she also alleges that Tyler pressured her to have an abortion when she was 17. Tyler has denied the allegations, asserting that their relationship was consensual and he was Misley’s legal guardian at the time, affording him immunity.

Aerosmith have announced rescheduled dates for their Peace Out farewell tour, which was suspended in September 2023 because Steven Tyler fractured his larynx. This new leg kicks off Sept. 20 in Pittsburgh and wraps up Feb. 26 in Buffalo, New York. They’ll once again be joined by the Black Crowes.

The band announced plans to wrap their career with one final tour in May 2023, but they played a mere three shows before Tyler severely hurt his larynx. “I am heartbroken to not be out there with Aerosmith, my brothers, and the incredible Black Crowes, rocking with the best fans in the world,” he wrote in a message to fans. “I promise we will be back as soon as we can!”

Steven Tyler of Aerosmith

‘It’s not goodbye it’s peace out!’: Aerosmith announce farewell tour

The legendary rock band, formed in 1970, will visit 40 stops in North America as part of their Peace Out tour

This fall, the elder statesmen of rock Aerosmith will launch one final tour, the band announced on Monday.

The Peace Out tour will begin on 2 September in Philadelphia and make 40 stops across North America, including Los Angeles, New York, Toronto, Chicago, and a hometown show in Boston on New Year’s Eve. The farewell tour will wrap on 26 January in Montreal.

“It’s not goodbye it’s PEACE OUT!” the band, formed in 1970, said in a statement. “Get ready and walk this way, you’re going to get the best show of our lives.”

The farewell tour will include original frontman Steven Tyler, lead guitarist Joe Perry, guitarist Brad Whitford and bassist Tom Hamilton. The group’s founding drummer, Joey Kramer, will not be in attendance.

“While Joey Kramer remains a beloved founding member of Aerosmith, he has regrettably made the decision to sit out the currently scheduled touring dates to focus his full attention on his family and health,” the band said in a statement. “Joey’s unmistakable and legendary presence behind the drum kit will be sorely missed.”

The tour announcement comes a few months after a woman sued Tyler for sexual assault when she was a teenager in the 1970s. Julia Misley, who had spoken out publicly for years about Tyler’s treatment of her as a teenager, filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles thanks to a rule temporarily lifting the statute of limitations on sexual abuse suffered as children. Misley alleges sexual battery, sexual assault and intentional infliction of distress over a three-year period on the road with the rocker, including a coerced abortion.

Tyler has denied all allegations. Misley has since become an anti-abortion advocate in the US, citing her experience with Tyler in the context of anti-abortion campaigns, including an interview with Tucker Carlson on Fox News .

Aerosmith, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, has sold more than 150m albums during their more than 50-year career, won four Grammys, conducted 10 world tours and notched many Top 10 pop hits, including I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, Walk This Way, Dream On, Jaded and What It Takes. The band recently wrapped their Las Vegas residency, Aerosmith: Deuces Are Wild, at Dolby Live at Park MGM, though a portion of the residency was canceled when Tyler voluntarily entered a rehabilitation program.

The Black Crowes will open for Aerosmith throughout the tour.

Aerosmith announces farewell tour with special guests – get all the details

Aerosmith fans who don’t want to miss a thing need to check this out.

The legendary band has announced its farewell tour, dubbed "Peace Out."

“It’s not goodbye it’s PEACE OUT!” the group said in a statement. “Get ready and walk this way, you’re going to get the best show of our lives.”

“Fans will see one of the most significant American rock bands in history one last time during this not-to-be-missed final tour,” a press release announcing the tour said. “Every night will celebrate the five decades of Aerosmith’s groundbreaking hits as they celebrate 50 years as America’s greatest rock band.”

The Black Crowes will also appear on the bill, while Aerosmith drummer Joey Kramer will not.

“While Joey Kramer remains a beloved founding member of Aerosmith, he has regrettably made the decision to sit out the currently scheduled touring dates to focus his full attention on his family and health,” the band said.

“Joey’s unmistakable and legendary presence behind the drum kit will be sorely missed.”

The 40-date North American tour will get underway Sept. 2 in Philadelphia and wrap up Jan. 26, 2024, in Montreal. The band, which has already enjoyed 10 world tours, will also play in its hometown of Boston on New Year’s Eve.

Tickets go on sale May 5 on Ticketmaster.com.

Aerosmith performance in Barcelona

Aerosmith, which was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, has won four Grammys during a long and decorated career, charting eight songs in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100, including the No. 1 hit “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” in 1998. They’ve also had nine Top 10 albums, including “Nine Lives” and “Get a Grip,” both of which went to No. 1.

In 2022, the band had to cancel dates for its Las Vegas residency when frontman Steven Tyler entered a treatment program for substance abuse.

“As many of you know, our beloved brother Steven has worked on his sobriety for many years,” the group said in a statement.

When the tour originally kicked off in September 2023, the Associated Press lauded it as “positively brilliant,” while USA Today noted that “the band was in peak form for this victory lap.” Echoing this sentiment, the Philadelphia Inquirer praised Aerosmith’s “ability to make such a grand-scale performance feel like a raw and raucous club date,” while PEOPLE described the show as “epic,” declaring that “Aerosmith is peacing out with a bang.” The 2024 run promises fans an electrifying show of Aerosmith’s groundbreaking hits performed in an immersive 360° production as they celebrate 50 years as America’s greatest rock band.

About Aerosmith

Celebrating their 50th anniversary, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame members Aerosmith have sold more than 150 million albums around the world, produced genre-defining music videos such as “Amazing,” “Crazy,” “Janie’s Got A Gun,” “Livin’ On The Edge,” and “Love In An Elevator,” and launched extravagant record-shattering global tours, most recently with their smash hit Las Vegas residency. The band has broken numerous boundaries, including becoming the first rock band with a massive commercially successful hip-hop collaboration with Run DMC on “Walk This Way” and the first hard rock band to appear during a Super Bowl Halftime Show with their 2001 performance, and in 1999, Aerosmith became the first band to have their own themed attraction at Disney World in Florida and later Paris with the launch of the Rock ‘N’ Roller coaster starring Aerosmith. About The Black Crowes

The Black Crowes are leaving the bullshit in the past. 15 years after their last album of original music, the Robinson Brothers present Happiness Bastards - their 10th studio album. Some may say the project has been several tumultuous years in the making, but we argue it’s arriving at just the right time. Call it brotherly love or music destiny that brought them back together, the highly anticipated record consecrating the reunion of this legendary band just may be the thing that saves rock & roll. In a time where the art form is buried beneath the corporate sheen of its successors, The Black Crowes are biting back with the angst of words left unsaid penned on paper and electrified by guitar strings, revealing stripped, bare-boned rock & roll. No gloss, no glitter, just rhythm and blues at its very best - gritty, loud, and in your face. Since The Black Crowes reunited in 2019, they’ve made a triumphant return to form with over 150 shows spanning 20 countries worldwide, celebrating the 30th anniversary of Shake Your Money Maker , the album that put them on the map. The Robinson Brothers and longtime bassist Sven Pipien headed to the studio with producer Jay Joyce in early 2023 and the experiences of years past transcribed themself through the music as the band found their way back to their roots. And it’s finally here - Happiness Bastards is out now.
