“Another Trip Around the Sun”– Meaning and Examples of This Common English Phrase

July 14, 2022 By Anthony R. Garcia

Another trip around the sun

The phrase, another trip around the sun , refers to the time period of one year—the length of time it takes for the Earth to travel around our sun. The word trip  means journey , which creates the idea that each of us makes a journey around the sun, each year. Therefore, the phrase is often used on a person’s birthday when a person has made “one more” or “another” trip around the sun:

Let us raise a toast to another trip around the sun !

The phrase was recently made popular as the title of a Jimmy Buffet song (2004) about his birthday, although it is unlikely he was the first person to use it this way. The phrase might also be used on anniversaries, New Year’s Eve, or other occasions celebrating “one more year” of life on planet Earth.

Birthdays are special days for everyone. They are the perfect time to celebrate life, love and happiness. One of the most popular ways of expressing birthday wishes is through “trip around the sun” quotes.

Originating from the Greek philosopher Aristotle’s belief that the Earth was at the center of the universe and all other celestial bodies orbit around it, these quotes highlight a person’s journey around the sun. As such, they serve as a reminder of a person’s age and how much further they’ve traveled on this cosmic journey.

There are different versions of this quote, some more serious than others. The more humorous versions include jokes about aging as one orbits around the sun yet again. For instance: “You’re getting so old that you don’t just need candles on your cake – you need a firefighters’ permit!” And also: “Happy 30th trip around the sun! Don’t worry – 29 is only 3 in Celsius.”

Others have more philosophical undertones – reminding us to be grateful for every second we spend on this earth. According to them, completing another successful year around our magnificent star is an achievement worth celebrating: “May your next trip around the Sun be full of love, joy and blessings.”

These quotes come in handy whether you’re sending out a sentimental message or sharing wisecracks with loved ones on their special day. Some people even use them as Instagram captions or Facebook posts!

As we move through different stages of our lives and experience new challenges along with achievements, may these quotes continue to inspire us to appreciate this beautiful life we’ve been given.

In conclusion, exploring various variations of birthday trip-around-the-sun quotes has been not just enlightening but also entertaining. These phrases remind us that like planets revolving around stars, our lives revolve around years spent on this planet – each one an opportunity to learn something new or make unforgettable memories. Whether we choose serious or funny caption or quote, may these words serve as a reminder to live full lives and cherish every trip around the sun.

As an expert in astronomy and space exploration, I can tell you that the quote “I’ve traveled around the sun x amount of times” is a fun and accurate way to celebrate a birthday. In reality, we all travel around the sun once every year as our planet orbits it. This quote emphasizes how much we’ve accomplished and experienced during that time. It’s also a great reminder of the vastness of our universe and how lucky we are to be alive on this beautiful planet. So, celebrate your next birthday by acknowledging your journey around the sun!

The idea of celebrating birthdays based on the concept of traveling around the sun was first introduced by German scholar, Johannes Kepler in the late 16th century. Prior to this, birthdays were often celebrated on religious or astrological occasions.

“Another Trip Around the Sun” Meaning and Life Lessons It Teaches Us

Another Trip Around the Sun

“Another trip around the sun” or “another year around the sun” means the time of passing one year – 365 days journey , which is the time length it takes for the Earth to make one travel around the Sun. It’s not only the trip of Earth, but also our trips, as we are on Earth following the Earth revolve around the sun.

Therefore, “Another trip around the sun” is often used as a birthday wish to congratulate someone who has completed another year, or one more year of their life.

There is also a song named “ Trip Around the Sun ” by Jimmy Buffet in 2004. It is a reflective and philosophical song that explores themes of time, life’s challenges, acceptance, wisdom, and the joy of living in the present. It encourages listeners to embrace the journey of life with all its ups and downs and to find contentment in the process.

“Another trip around the sun” can be used to celebrate birthdays, and it also teaches you some life lessons when celebrating your birthday:

  • 1. Celebrate Yourself

Relationships

Personal growth, 3. cherish life, 4. value relationships who spend time with you, embrace the journey , recognize that growth takes time , trust the process , learn from the seasons , be patient with yourself and others .

  • 6. Set Goals for the Future

Final Thought

1. celebrate yourself  .

Your birthday, marking another trip around the sun, is a celebration of you. It’s a time to recognize and appreciate all that you are and all that you’ve done. Celebrate your achievements, your growth, your resilience, and your uniqueness. Treat yourself with kindness and take time to do something special for yourself. You’ve earned it!

2. Reflect On The Past Year

It’s valuable to take some time for reflection as your past is what makes you now. When you reflect on the past year, you can look back different aspects of your life, such as health, careers, relationships, and personal growth, and see how you grew that year.

Reflecting on the past year is a purposeful examination of the experiences that have shaped you. It allows you to recognize progress, understand challenges, and plan for the future with greater clarity and intention. As you move forward, these reflections become a valuable guide, helping you to live a more mindful and fulfilling life.

Thinking about your health in the last year can help you see what’s been good for you and what you might need to work on. Maybe you started working out, eating healthy, or got through a health problem. Recognizing these changes can be empowering and motivate you to continue making positive choices.

Your career path over the past year may have been filled with accomplishments, challenges, or even unexpected twists. Reflecting on these experiences can help you identify your strengths, recognize areas for growth, and set clear goals for the future. It’s an opportunity to celebrate successes and learn from mistakes.

Look back at the relationships you’ve cared for or maybe overlooked in the last year can be a deep and meaningful experience. It may show trends in how you deal with others and help you see what’s important to you in relationships. Reflecting on this can lead you to make current relationships stronger and help you create new connections in the coming year.

Personal growth usually happens when you face challenges and try new things. When you think about what happened in the last year, you can see what has helped you grow as a person. It may be a new hobby, a big change in your life, or a better understanding of who you are. Seeing and appreciating these growth moments can feel very satisfying.

It’s easy to take the simple things in life for granted, like good health, clean water and food, the simple act of breathing, seeing, hearing, tasting, and more.

The phrase “Another trip around the sun” reminds us of the preciousness of life because it means we’ve completed another year of living. It’s a chance to think about what’s important, like family, friends, and taking care of ourselves.

It also tells us to enjoy life and not waste time on things that don’t matter. It’s a reminder to be thankful for what we have and to make the most of every day. So as we go on the next trip around the sun, we need to appreciate the little things and live our lives with joy and kindness.

Your birthday is often a time to gather with family and friends to celebrate together. It’s a chance to connect with those you love and who love you. It is they that give you love and support, especially when you’re down. Take the time to nurture these relationships, express gratitude and help others if needed for the people in your life.

5. Understand Life is a Process And Please Be Patient

As Earth revolves around the sun taking a full year to complete its journey, life is also a process that unfolds over time. It is natural you’ll face multiple obstacles in your life, but they will make you stronger and better.

Life is not about rushing to a destination, it’s about embracing the journey. Just as the Earth’s trip around the sun is filled with different seasons and varying landscapes, our lives are filled with ups and downs, twists and turns. Learning to appreciate the process and find joy in the journey can lead to a more fulfilling and contented life.

Personal growth and development don’t happen overnight. Like the Earth’s slow and steady movement around the sun, meaningful change takes time, effort, and patience. Whether you’re working on personal goals, building relationships, or pursuing a career , realizing that great things take time can help you be more patient with yourself and others.

Sometimes, life doesn’t unfold as quickly or as smoothly as we’d like. It can be frustrating when things don’t go according to plan or when progress seems slow. But just as the Earth doesn’t rush its orbit, we can learn to trust the process of life. Having faith that things will work out and that you’re on the right path, even if it doesn’t feel like it at the moment, can bring peace and confidence.

The Earth’s journey around the sun brings different seasons, each with its unique characteristics and beauty. Similarly, life has its seasons. There are times of growth and flourishing, times of rest and reflection, times of challenge, and times of joy. Understanding that these seasons are a natural part of life can help you navigate them with grace and wisdom.

Patience is a virtue that can be cultivated by recognizing that life is a process. Be gentle with yourself as you grow and change, and extend that same patience to others. Everyone is on their unique journey, and understanding that can foster compassion and empathy.

6. Set Goals for the Future

As you reflect on another year gone by, it’s also a time to look forward and set goals for the next trip around the sun. What do you want to achieve in the coming year? What steps will you take to make those goals a reality?

Goals provide a clear direction and purpose, guiding you towards what you want to achieve. They help you concentrate your efforts and time on what’s most important.

“Another trip around the sun” is often used to mark the passing of a year and used as birthday’s wish, symbolizing the Earth’s orbit around the sun. It’s a poetic way to express the passage of time and be thankful for the experiences, health, relationships, growth, lessons and more that you have gained within the year.

"How old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?" - Satchel Paige

Today marks another year and another trip around the Sun for me. For you, and me, and everything on Earth that makes it through another year on this world, there's a whole lot we get to experience.

The Earth and Sun from the ISS

Image credit: NASA / ISS Expedition 13.

Some things are tiny: the Earth's rotation slows by about two millionths  of a second each year, while some are large: we hurtle over 900 million kilometers in outer space as we orbit around the Sun. Our Earth spins just over 366 times on its axis, while our one revolution around the Sun leaves us with 365 (and an occasional 366) days in a year.

But looking beyond the Earth, practically everything you can imagine in the Universe has undergone a lot in the last year you've been on Earth.

Every satellite we've put up, including the vaunted International Space Station, races around the Earth as we go about our daily lives. The low-Earth-orbit ones (like the ISS) race around the Earth at speeds around 17,000 miles-per-hour (27,000 km/hr), meaning that over the course of a year, they orbit the Earth around 6,000 times .

But while our Solar System is full of interesting facts and motions, everything I've mentioned and much, much more hurtles around the galaxy -- imperceptibly -- as the years unfold.

NGC 6744: the Milky Way's "twin"

The entire Solar System speeds through the galaxy, traveling 7 billion kilometers  each year in our Sun's journey through the galaxy's disk. But life goes on in the galaxy over that time, as gas clouds contract, forming new stars all the time.

Each year, around a million  new stars  about a Solar Mass's worth of stars (reference here) form in the galaxy, mostly in star forming regions like the Eagle Nebula , above. At the same time, stars in our galaxy burn out and die , but not quite at the same rate.

109 Planetary Nebulae

Stars die spectacularly throughout the galaxy, but the vast majority of stars we form have a lifetime that's far greater than the present age of the Universe. As a result -- even optimistically -- only dozens  of stars die each millenium in our Milky Way, meaning that each year that passes marks an extra new star or so in every galaxy  in the Universe.

And those galaxies, themselves, are different on this day than they were even a year ago.

The Virgo Cluster of galaxies

Image credit: Rogelio Bernal Andreo of Deep Sky Colors.

The nearest large cluster of galaxies -- the Virgo Cluster , above -- has around 1,600 large, Milky Way-sized (or larger) galaxies in it, and lives just 53 million light years away. It's also speeding away from us at over 1,200 kilometers per second , meaning that each year that goes by sees that entire cluster wind up another 40 billion kilometers  farther away from us.

In fact, if you lived to be 229, you would find this cluster an extra light year  distant from us than when you were born. But that's for the closest  cluster of galaxies to us; what about the farthest galaxy we've ever discovered?

Farthest galaxy ever at z=8.6

Image credit: NASA, ESA, G. Illingworth and the HUDF09 Team.

The light from this galaxy -- found in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field -- took 13.1 billion years, or 96% of the age of the Universe, to reach us. But the Universe is expanding so quickly that each year that passes sees this galaxy more than two extra light years distant from us! Even if we launched a spaceship today at 99.999999999%+ the speed of light at this galaxy, it would never reach it. As each year passes, maybe 20 or so galaxies newly  suffer this fate: that they become unreachable, even in theory , from our place in the Universe.

So happy birthday to me and everyone who shares another year on the planet with me, and may the Universe continue to amaze and educate us all.

Happy birthday! If only more stars like YOU were born on our Earth... at least one a decade please?

Happy Birthday!

Happy B-day Ethan and all the best. Keep up the good work and live long and prosper! ;)

What can I say - You made many things much more understandable. And much more interesting for a layman. Thank You and keep up a good work.

Best regards.

PS Strange thing: 4 comments and another one from Poland :-) .

"...each year that passes sees this galaxy more than two extra light years distant from us!"

Does this mean that this galaxy is receding from us at twice the speed of light? If so, then how can we see it?

Did I miss something here?

Happy birthday! I hope it is a wonderful occasion. :)

Happy birthday. And I'm as mystified as Jockaira (and an RAH fan)

I agree Jockaira, I must have missed something too. That implies that both our galaxy and this distant galaxy are relatively, each moving away from each other at faster than the speed of light. Could someone please enlighten me? Nice reflective blog though!

"Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving; revolving at 900 miles an hour." - M. Python Here's to one more time around for all of us!

Many more happy returns of the day.

Happy birthday, and best wishes for your next trip with the Earth around the sun!

(Aren't our galaxy and this distant galaxy apparently receding from each other at above the speed of light because the movement in part results from the distance between them increasing with the universal expansion of space? I know objects can't exceed the speed of light, but I believe the universe as a whole is exempt.)

Happy birthday, Ethan, and thank you for giving us this wonderful blog!

Happy birthday from this side of the planet.

“…each year that passes sees this galaxy more than two extra light years distant from us!” Does this mean that this galaxy is receding from us at twice the speed of light? If so, then how can we see it?

I guess there was a time that those galaxies weren't moving so fast away, and the light that was emitted in our direction during that pre-faster-than-c-time is what we are observing now.

btw theoretically we could visit those Deep Field clusters in 25 human years, when we are onboard of a spaceship that constantly accelerates with 1G, due to time dilation. But sadly there seems to be that too weird expansion.

"If so, then how can we see it?"

An interesting phenomenon would be, if what I suggested in my previous comment is correct, that there will come a time that clusters start to disappear before our own eyes, zap, zap, zap, …

Happy Birthday Ethan! Hope you blew out all the candles on the cake and wished many more years of writing this wonderfully inspiring blog!

"each year that passes marks an extra million-or-so stars in every galaxy in the Universe."

But the Milky Way galaxy is 13.2 billion years old and only has 300 billion stars (i.e. 3 x 10^11 stars) 1.3 x 10^10 years x 10^6 stars /year = 1.3 x 10^16 stars. I assume there is a reason for this discrepancy.

This is a pretty impressive claim. So the higher the z (i.e. redshift of a galaxy) the lower the number of stars in the galaxy. Please point me to a reference. Or... what am I misunderstanding?

"Even if we launched a spaceship today at 99.999999999%+ the speed of light at this galaxy, it would never reach it. (the farthest galaxy we’ve ever discovered)."

But the highest energy cosmic rays do not travel across the universe at a constant velocity. . they accelerate continuously (somehow) in their journey across the universe. Otherwise, they wouldn't exceed the GZK limit.

Likewise, a spacecraft with low initial velocity that is continuously accelerated by several g's can reach a more distant galaxy than one with an initial (and constant) velocity equal to "99.999999999%+ the speed of light ". As well an initial velocity equal to "99.999999999%+ the speed of light " implies an almost infinite instantaneous acceleration that would kill a human.

Well anyway this is how my spaceship is designed. Still, perhaps I misunderstand something? Let me know.

At any rate, you're still young Ethan. With proper accelleration you still can reach that most distant galaxy before your last birthday. Time dilation due to continuous gravitational accelleration of several g's is the ticket.

So happy birthday, live long as you enjoy and travel the universe.

Happy birthday Ethan. :)

From the pov of a photon, no time passes between the emissionand absorption. Therefore the universe was a set size. From our pov, the universe got bigger and therefore the ohoton got stretched to fit the same number of 'beats' in this longer path.

Thaks to Chelle for explaining Ethan's apparently impossible statement. This shows the value of determining exactly which space-time frame is being considered.

What I missed was that the light by which we see "this galaxy" has been in transit for billions of years and the actual motions of "this galaxy" are not in the same space-time frame as the light or our non-existant perceptions of "this galaxy".

Belatedly, I wish Ethan and everyone else here a Happy Birthday in whatever space-time frame it occurs.

Happy Birthday, Ethan!!!

I know, I missed the date, but, is it yet OK, isn't? ;-)

Thanks for giving me some credit, but I don't know if my suggestion is correct, because there would be also an other odd thing, and that is the fact that the speed of gravitational waves is the same as the speed of light, so at a certain point Stars would start to be disconnected, because they do not only shines, they also pull .... how is this keeping it all together, are them waves being stretched, like how Wow says that "the photon got stretched" ? Perhaps this is something that Ethan could explain in more detail in an extra topic.

You are giving us an excellent thing to read. Keep on with it, I enjoy reading it a lot.... Happy birthday.

Happy Birthday!!! I always enjoy seeing the photos that catch your learned eye.

Happy B'day Ethan.

OKThen, my mistake on the earlier statement on the galaxy's star formation rate. I mis-read a paper a while ago when they talked about a star formation rate as being about an Msun per year as being about a million suns, rather than being about one solar mass per year.

This has been fixed, and check back later today for a new post elaborating on it (with links).

تصاویر بسیار عالی است.واقعا شگفت انگیز و لذت بخشه. The photoes are very wondeful.thank you

Great post. I came across this while searching for images of the sun from the space station. Surprisingly there are very few, and in the ones I can find the sun appears smaller than I imaged, seeing as its huge. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the post.

Another Trip Around The Sun

Yesterday was my 60 th birthday, and I am here to report that after years of searching, I believe I may have finally hit upon a way of thinking about aging that doesn’t make my insides curdle, and find me staring at the ceiling in a cold sweat in the middle of the night.

I think I have actually hit upon a consoling metaphor that  makes me feel happy about taking one more trip around the sun.

And it is actually that very idea of “taking another trip around the sun” that has captured my imagination.

Here is the thinking that is making me feel happy: Everyone is born on some random day on this pretty blue marble. It spins in space around the sun, with us on it, and when it gets back to that random date where we started, we have completed one year and have a birthday.

On that day we get to pause, and if we like, kind of “assess” the ride.  Like getting off a roller coaster and going, “Whew! That was, (fill in the blank): exciting, intense, exhilarating, frightening, nauseating, etc.

Every year has its particular ups and downs and ins and outs. Within each year there are times of quiet and times of turbulence. Since this roller coaster ride lasts a whole year, lots of different things can happen.

But when it slows down as it nears the “born on” day, the starting point, you get a chance to get off and think about the ride that just ended. You get a chance to look around and see who shared your ride: those who shared most of it, or only parts of it; those who made the ride more joyful and more interesting; those who made the ride easier and more comfortable, and those who made it a bit more difficult.

And this is what I have been doing for the past few days: assessing my ride, taking inventory.

So here is this year’s assessment:

I am healthy and vibrant and full of energy. My relationships are amazing. I get to do work that I not only love, but feel is the work I was put on this earth to do.

I feel loved and valued and appreciated by all the people who have shared this year’s ride with me. I cannot think of a single person who has made my life difficult in any way.

This has been a sweet, sweet ride. I feel not just happy, but ebullient. I want to get back on the ride and go again!

Can we please go again? Please??? I want to take yet another trip around the sun. If I make it, this one will be my 60 th go-round. Some people don’t get to go that many times, but I’ve been lucky enough to have had lots of rides. And I want many, many more!

I want a chance to experience ups and downs and ins and outs and backwards and forwards and fast and slow and easy and hard and happy and sad. Can we please just go again?

And can all the people who have made this year’s ride so amazing and wonderful and joyous, can they all come too?

The other night I paused over my candles, took a big breath in, closed my eyes, and made my wish. As the smoke rose from the  candles, I took my seat, strapped myself in, and prepared for yet another trip around the sun.

Another Trip Around The Sun

Lessons from a half of lifetime worth of birthdays.

another trip around sun

In early March, I turned 46 (or, as I joked with David when he turned 46, the age when you no longer have an excuse not to round up to 50). As I reflect on the adventures of the past year, I’ve decided to share my thoughts on what birthdays mean to me, as well as some tips for making them meaningful for you and your family.

I used to hate birthdays. To this day, I’m not entirely sure why. I guess I always felt like a birthday should be something more than what it was. My parents were never that into celebrating birthdays; I remember many years when I would just bake a cake with my mom and otherwise have an ordinary day.

One of my most memorable birthdays was one when my mom wasn't there. She had been traveling for work, so my dad took us out to go practice shooting BB guns. I baked my own cake, which my sister helped me decorate. I was around nine or ten. For some reason, that day stood out to me because we did something really different that we otherwise wouldn't have done.

Normally, because we weren’t that into presents, my birthday was a day I would spend wishing something would happen that never did. Then my dad passed away about ten years ago , just after my birthday. That was when I realized that birthdays are never a given. Each trip around the sun is something precious and important. None of us is ever guaranteed another birthday, which is why each of them should be remembered. Birthdays are a recognition of life, a reminder of all that we have learned and experienced, and that’s something worth celebrating.

Here are a few ways our family makes our birthdays special:

Focus on experiences: We don’t really buy gifts in our family. Instead, each year, David and the kids create something for me, such as a Procreate drawing that they turned into a wall poster. During non-Covid years, we let the kids pick whether to have a party with friends or a short weekend vacation. This year, we wanted to do something simple, so I bought several Escape Games to play together, and we watched Turning Red as a family. (Great movie about coming of age as an Asian Canadian, by the way.)

Tell the story of the day: On each of the kids' birthdays, we recount the story of what happened on the day of their birth. We discuss the excitement and joy we felt when we found out they were coming, and how we felt when they came into the world. This year, we asked my mom to share the story of my birth with the kids now that they are older and can understand more about how things were different back then. They marveled at how my Dad's brother, Uncle Peter, drove my mom to the hospital for the scheduled C-section, since my Dad had to work, and how Dad came much later to meet me after his shift.

Gift with purpose: I realized a while ago that I was pretty bad at gift giving, so instead of giving my nieces and nephews physical gifts, we created a college fund for them. For each birthday, we send them a statement of how much we've saved so far. For my sister and her husband, as well as our kids, our family does one major trip a year. We've been to Taiwan, Japan, Arizona, Utah, and Seattle, among other places. These annual trips are a chance for us to rent a big house and enjoy each other’s company while making memories that will last a lifetime.

Have special traditions: Traditions make birthdays memorable and are something to look forward to every year. For example, since we are not big cake people, we've gotten donuts for the kids’ birthdays ever since they were young. That way everyone gets their favorite flavor, and no one is disappointed with the cake that’s chosen. (And toasted donuts the day after are incredibly delicious.)

Make it an adventure: This year, for my daughter's 10th birthday, her brother, sister, and father were slated to go on a trip together for church. She was so sad when the plans fell through that she moped around for weeks. To make up for the disappointment, we decided to create the “Danielle Birthday Extravaganza.” We spent weeks planning it. We gave her a budget, and she got to plan a whole weekend to do whatever she wanted. We went to the store to pick something small for her to remember the weekend by, took her out to brunch at her favorite place, Bill’s Cafe, got bubble tea from Boba Guys, and went to Trader Joe's to pick up a dessert to share with her siblings. We spent the whole weekend doing things together and made a ton of fun memories along the way.

Use it as a time to reflect: Last week I wrote about marking time , and why it’s such an important practice for measuring your growth and looking ahead. Birthdays are a chance to take a look back at the past year, take stock of what you accomplished, and reflect on what you wish you had done differently. They are also a perfect time to schedule a physical, monitor your health and vitals, start a new habit, or clean out the clutter that you don't need anymore.

My memories of my childhood birthdays are pretty hazy. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I realized how important it is to celebrate each birthday with joy and reflection. I hope that as the kids grow up, they are getting a chance to make and document new memories together (and I hope you are, too!).

Meaning of Trip Around the Sun by Jimmy Buffett & Martina McBride

Album Cover

Trip Around the Sun

Jimmy Buffett & Martina McBride

Listen to the full song on Apple Music

"Trip Around the Sun" by Jimmy Buffett & Martina McBride conveys a reflective and philosophical perspective on life's journey. The song begins by referencing a birthday celebration, highlighting how time passes quickly and the need to consider the wishes made. The lyrics suggest that the past year has been challenging, implying that life is not always easy and can be chaotic.

The concept of a "revolution" is introduced, symbolizing the daily changes and challenges faced by individuals. The line "Just one more candle and a trip around the sun" implies the passing of another year and another journey around the sun, highlighting the cyclical nature of life and aging.

In the chorus, the singers express a resigned acceptance of the world's uncontrollable nature. They compare themselves to someone hanging on while the world keeps spinning, implying that they are merely passengers in the grand scheme of things. The line "If there's one thing that I've learned from all this living, it's that it wouldn't change a thing if I let go" suggests a sense of surrender to the circumstances and a realization that trying to control everything is futile.

The second verse emphasizes the unexpected and fleeting nature of life, with the line "Though you never see it coming, always wind up wondering where it went." The singers contemplate whether their time has been spent wisely and if they have made the most of their experiences. They view their life as a series of revelations, noting that they should celebrate the things they have accomplished or experienced rather than dwelling on missed opportunities.

In the outro, the resolution to never make another resolution is made, highlighting the desire to live in the present moment and enjoy the ride without setting specific expectations. The repetition of the line "Just enjoy this ride on my trip around the sun" reinforces the notion of embracing life's journey and finding joy in the uncertainty until its natural end.

HERE’S TO ANOTHER TRIP AROUND THE SUN

by Kerry Siggins | Oct 27, 2016 | Positive Living

Meet kerry, will help you improve communication, resolve conflict, develop your team, and find meaning as a leader.

Another birthday, another trip around the sun. As I sit here on my 38th birthday reflecting upon the past year, I feel a huge sense of gratitude for all that I have, for who I am, and for all the amazing people in my life, especially those who bring me so much joy. I am so glad to be here.

This past year has been fraught with challenges but the wins are far more overwhelming. There has been laughter, tears, hard work, 100K+ airline miles, grief, and joy. There have been spectacular moments and moments of panic and anxiety. There’s been a lot of mountain bike riding. And most importantly, this past year has been filled with precious moments with my family, especially with Jack…my fast-growing, highly evolved threenager; these are the memories I am trying to burn into my mind forever; I never want to let them go.

Life is what you make of it; there is no doubt about that. I am eternally grateful for all the amazing things and all the crappy things that flow through my life each day; all of these events, decisions, and feelings add to the rich tapestry of connections, relationships, experiences, and sense of self that are woven together to form the fabric of my life.

So what did I learn this trip around the sun that’s worth passing on to all of you? Perhaps nothing profound but that being said, sometimes it’s the little things that mean the most.

First, it’s important to take care of yourself. Burning out does no one any good. Do yoga every day (seriously, it’s life-changing). Get regular massages and/or acupuncture treatments. Eat well. Ride a bike. Take a day off to treat yourself. Even better, take a vacation, or my favorite…a staycation. You will be able to do more when you give yourself a break.

Second, spend more time with the most important people in your life; make it a priority. At any moment you could lose someone you love dearly. You don’t want to regret the choices you made on how you spent your time. Call your mom every day. Go visit your grandfather. Put your phone down and play with your kids. Eat dinner as a family every night. Life is too short to not be with the people you love.

Third, the things that seem like a really big deal today will be minor things tomorrow and forget about the day after. Do you remember what you were freaking out about last week? Yeah, me either. So don’t let yourself fall apart over the challenges life throws at you. Take a deep breath and let the situation play out. Life ebbs and flows and you’ll move on faster than you think.

Fourth, live outside your comfort zone for an entire year; it’s the fastest way to grow as a person and leader. I don’t think I have had a day this year (besides on the weekends) when I have felt like, “oh yeah, I’ve got this.” And even though I am exhausted at times, I have never felt so engaged and connected in my life. Playing it safe is not actually safe. Challenge yourself constantly…you’ll be amazed at what you can do.

Lastly, it’s a game-changer to have high status on airlines, even if they are shitty airlines. Free upgrades to first-class really do make traveling better.  My goal is United Global Services baby!

Here’s to another trip around the sun. May it be amazingly fabulous. I am so glad I get to share the trip with all of you.

another trip around sun

The sun's magnetic field is about to flip. Here's what to expect.

The reversal could have a beneficial effect on Earth.

The sun is on the verge of a significant event: a magnetic field reversal.

This phenomenon happens roughly every 11 years and marks an important stage in the solar cycle . The shift in polarity indicates the halfway point of solar maximum , the height of solar activity, and the beginning of the shift toward solar minimum.

The last time the sun 's magnetic field flipped was toward the end of 2013. But what causes this switch in polarity, and is it dangerous? Let's take a deep look at the sun's magnetic field reversal and investigate the effects it could have on Earth .

Related: How a giant sunspot unleashed solar storms that spawned global auroras that just dazzled us all

To understand the magnetic field's reversal, first, it's important to be familiar with the solar cycle. This approximately 11-year cycle of solar activity is driven by the sun's magnetic field and is indicated by the frequency and intensity of sunspots visible on the surface. The height of solar activity during a given solar cycle is known as solar maximum, and current estimates predict it will occur between late 2024 and early 2026 .

But there is another very important, albeit lesser-known, cycle that encapsulates two 11-year solar cycles. Known as the Hale cycle, this magnetic cycle lasts approximately 22 years, through which the sun's magnetic field reverses and then reverts to its original state, Ryan French , a solar astrophysicist and Space.com contributing writer, told Space.com.

During solar minimum, the sun's magnetic field is close to a dipole, with one north pole and one south pole, similar to Earth's magnetic field . But as we shift toward solar maximum, "the sun's magnetic field becomes more complex, without a clear north-south pole separation," French said. By the time solar maximum passes and solar minimum arrives, the sun has returned to a dipole, albeit with a flipped polarity.

The upcoming switch in polarity will be from the northern to southern magnetic field in the Northern Hemisphere and vice versa in the Southern Hemisphere. "This will bring it to a similar magnetic orientation to Earth, which also has its southern-pointing magnetic field in the Northern Hemisphere," French explained.

What causes the switch in polarity?

The reversal is driven by sunspots, magnetically complex regions of the sun's surface that can spawn significant solar events, such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) — large blasts of plasma and magnetic field.

Diagram of where sunspots are located on the sun at different times during the solar cycle.

As sunspots emerge close to the equator, they will have an orientation matching the old magnetic field, while sunspots forming closer to the poles will have a magnetic field matching the incoming magnetic orientation, French said. This is called Hale's law.

"The magnetic field from active regions makes its way toward the poles and eventually causes the reversal," solar physicist Todd Hoeksema, director of the Wilcox Solar Observatory at Stanford University, previously told Space.com .

But the exact underlying cause of such a flip in polarity remains mysterious. "That gets into the whole [solar] cycle, and wondering what that is," Stanford University solar physicist Phil Scherrer previously told Space.com. "We still don't have a really self-consistent mathematical description of what's happening. And until you can model it, you don't really understand it — it's hard to really understand it."

It really depends on where the magnetic field comes from. "Are there going to be many sunspots? And are the sunspots going to contribute to the magnetic field of the pole, or are they going to kind of cancel locally?" Hoeksema said. "That question we don't yet know how to answer."

How quickly does the switch occur?

— Astrophotographer captures stunning close-up views of sunspot region that spawned May's auroras

What we do know is that the solar magnetic field flip is not instantaneous. It's a gradual transition from a dipole to a complex magnetic field, to a reversed dipole over the entire 11-year solar cycle. "In short, there is no specific 'moment' in which the sun's poles flip," French said. "It's not like the Earth, where the flip is measured by the migration of the North/South pole."

It generally takes a year or two for a complete reversal, but it can vary significantly. For example, the north polar field of Solar Cycle 24, which ended in December 2019, took nearly five years to reverse, according to the National Solar Observatory .

The magnetic field flip is so gradual, you won't even notice when it happens. And no, however dramatic it might sound, it is not the sign of an impending apocalypse. "The world will not end tomorrow," Scherrer previously told Space.com.

However, we will experience some of the polarity flip's side effects.

How does the sun's magnetic flip affect us?

the sun is at the center and a twirling purple sheet extends out far into the solar system. It looks a bit like a dancers skirt rippling and ruffling as they spin.

There is no doubt that the sun has been incredibly active recently, firing out numerous powerful solar flares and CMEs, triggering strong geomagnetic storms on Earth, which, in turn, have produced some incredible auroral displays of late .

However, the increased severity of space weather is not the direct cause of the flip in polarity. Rather, these things tend to occur together, Hoeksema told Space.com in 2013.

Space weather is typically the strongest during solar maximum, when the sun's magnetic field is also the most complex, according to French.

One side effect of the magnetic field shift is slight but primarily beneficial: It can help shield Earth from galactic cosmic rays — high-energy subatomic particles that travel at near light speed and can damage spacecraft and harm orbiting astronauts who are outside Earth's protective atmosphere.

As the sun's magnetic field shifts, the "current sheet" — a sprawling surface that radiates billions of miles outward from the sun's equator — becomes very wavy , providing a better barrier against cosmic rays.

Predicting future solar cycle strengths

Scientists will be keeping a watchful eye on the sun's magnetic field reversal and seeing how long it takes for it to bounce back into a dipole configuration. If that happens within the next couple of years, the next 11-year cycle will be relatively active, but if the buildup is slow, the cycle will be relatively weak, like the previous Solar Cycle 24.

Glacier’s Going-to-the-Sun Road is Finally Open—But With a Slight Change

With some relaxed restrictions, driving the iconic road will be easier this year, as long as you follow a couple new regulations..

After a long winter closure, Glacier National Park’s most scenic drive has finally opened for the 2024 season. As of June 22, the Going-to-the-Sun-Road is now accessible from both the park’s west and east entrances. And, thanks to relaxed restrictions, driving it could be easier than in years past.

This weekend, park officials announced that visitors will no longer need a timed reservation to access the road from the eastern Saint Mary entrance. Although timed-entry permits were formerly required at both ends of the Going-to-the-Sun Road, they only be required at the west entrance this year.

Best known for its sweeping views of glaciers, wildflowers and waterfalls, Going-to-the-Sun is one of Glacier’s most famous attractions. However, its short season (often three months) usually leads to congestion during peak months. In 2023, June, July, August, and September received an average of 610,884 recreational visits per month, compared to around 20,000 per month the rest of the year. In July alone, more than 700,000 people traveled through the park. That growing popularity was one factor that led to the implementation of a timed-entry system in 2021.

Although the Going-to-the-Sun Road access is often unavailable until late June, this season proved to be particularly challenging for road crews because the pass received deep snow and avalanches over the winter. In addition to clearing pathways and parking lots for visitors, officials have struggled to get the water system operational. As a result, visitors should bring their own potable water while recreating within the park this year.

Changing weather conditions have also contributed to rockfall in some areas. Officials wrote in a statement:  “While driving along the road, particularly through the Rim Rock area (approximately 1 mile west of Logan Pass) visitors should be aware of potential rockfall and should not slow down or stop in this section. Rocks and other debris continue to fall throughout the summer, requiring daily clean up. With the level of snow at Logan Pass, visitors should use extreme caution and refrain from crossing snowfields or standing under snow overhangs.”

As there have been in years past, there are also some RV restrictions . Vehicles longer than 21 feet or wider than 8 feet are prohibited from driving between Avalanche Creek and Rising Sun. Vehicles with a height of 10 feet or more are encouraged to exercise caution while driving toward the Loop from Logan’s Pass due to overhanging rocks .

In addition to needing a vehicle reservations on the west side of the park, visitors will also need to reserve slots for the North Fork. After July 1, reservations will be required for Many Glacier access as well. Vehicle reservations are available exclusively through recreation.gov . An allotment of next-day reservations can also be requested online. One useful workaround: Visitors with lodging reservations within the park—including campsite reservations—are not required to reserve vehicle access in advance. Bringing your lodging reservation to the entry kiosk should be sufficient to gain entry.

Now that the Going-to-the-Sun Road is open, the hiker and biker shuttle that typically runs through the park will no longer be available. Based on previous park activity, officials noted that park congestion worsens between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. when vehicle reservations are lifted. With heightened activity expected at this time, cyclists will not be permitted to use the road in either direction during this time frame.

Pledges and promises are coming thick and fast from every party as the general election approaches.

Struggling to keep up with who is saying what?

Here is a summary of where the main parties stand on major issues.

For a more in-depth look at what each party has pledged, scour our  manifesto checker ...

TV presenter Rylan Clark has said he would "love" to become a politician - and replace the party system with a "Power Rangers of government" model.

The TV personality, 35, joined political editor Beth Rigby and former Scottish Conservative leader Baroness Ruth Davidson for this week's Sky News Electoral Dysfunction podcast.

Asked if he would ever consider the career change, he said: "If I wasn't in the job that I was in, I would love nothing more."

Rylan, who won Celebrity Big Brother and also appeared on the X Factor, appeared on the podcast in place of Labour candidate Jess Phillips after tweeting his praise for Rigby on the day Rishi Sunak announced the general election.

Sharing a clip of her and Sky presenter Sophy Ridge outside a rainy Downing Street waiting for Mr Sunak to appear at the lectern, he said: "Obsessed with the Rigby."

Speaking to her and Davidson, he said his "obsession" with politics began with Brexit - "as we've seen so many promises which weren't fulfilled" since then.

He added: "I lie there at night sometimes, and I think about [Volodymyr] Zelenskyy. He hosted one of the same shows I've hosted in Ukraine."

The TV presenter also shared his idea of abandoning political parties altogether.

Read the full story here:

A short while ago, Rishi Sunak gave a speech BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, also known as Neasden Temple, which is a traditional Hindu temple in London.

Rishi Sunak, who is of the Hindu faith, told attendees: "Like all of you, I draw inspiration and comfort from my faith.

"I was proud to be sworn in as a member of parliament on the Bhagavad Gita [one of Hinduism's most prominent sacred texts].

"Our faith teaches us to do our duty, and not fret about the outcome as long as one does it faithfully."

"My family also strengthen my commitment to service," the PM said.

He spoke about the philanthropic work that his mother-in-law does in India, and praises his wife as "the greatest support that any husband could ever have" and "someone committed to a life of service".

To the attendees, Mr Sunak said: "I want to start by thanking all of you for your support, your prayers, and your love. You have been with me every step of the way.

"On the hardest days in this job, I have felt your backing, and I know the pride that it is to have a British-Asian prime minister, and I am determined to never let you down."

The PM argued that so many Indians are Conservatives because "our values bind us together", citing education, hard work, and family.

Mr Sunak said: "One of my most memorable moments of the last few years came on Diwali, sixty years after my [grandmother] boarded a plane in East Africa - her first ever, all by herself - to come ahead and make a new life for her family here in this country.

"Sixty years after that moment, her great-granddaughters, my girls, they played in the street outside our home."

They "had fun like so many other families do on Diwali - except, the street that they were playing in was Downing Street".

In reference to the racial slur a Reform UK campaigner had used about him, he said that the "events of the last few days should not make us forget that the United Kingdom is the world's most successful multi-ethnic, multi-faith democracy, and we should all by uplifted by that".

In conclusion, the PM said: "Thank you for all your support. I can only hope that I can make you all proud every day."

Even by Reform's standards, the frequency and ferocity of attacks flying out from the party has stepped up today.

We've had complaints going into Ofcom, the Electoral Commission and Essex Police.

The BBC boycotted, Channel 4 reported, and a former campaigner cut adrift.

This tells you more about Nigel Farage's mindset than his decision to suspend three candidates over online posts.

So, five days from the election, will these seemingly rolling controversies shift many votes?

Much like the row over the Reform leader's comments on Russia and Putin, that probably depends on how fully signed up you are to the party’s agenda.

For the diehards, talk of an establishment stitch-up will find sympathetic and supportive ears.

But wavering Tories dabbling with Reform may be queasier about all this talk of racism and a big media conspiracy.

One final point.

A fortnight ago, Nigel Farage demanded to be treated as one of the big players in this election, citing a poll putting him ahead of the Tories.

But with more coverage comes more scrutiny.

You can construct a fair argument that that's exactly what Reform has been exposed to in the last week.

We've also had the results in from a poll carried out by Opinium for The Observer.

Similarly to the Savanta poll we mentioned in our previous post, it found Labour was still in the lead and the Conservatives remain unchanged.

However, it found support for Labour hadn't dipped and was still the same at 40%.

Reform UK were up one point to 17%, the Greens fell three points to 6% and the Lib Dems and SNP remained unchanged.

Labour has fallen four points to 38% - the party's lowest share since Rishi Sunak became prime minister - in a Savanta poll for the Sunday Telegraph.

But, it still holds a 17 point lead over the Conservatives, who were unchanged on 21%, indicating a landslide majority for Sir Keir Starmer.

"This is our lowest Labour vote share since Rishi Sunak became prime minister, and the Conservatives for their part do appear to have slowed or stopped their downward spiral," said Savanta's political research director Chris Hopkins.

"However, that's where the good news ends for the prime minister, as if this vote share was replicated on polling day, Labour would still likely have a majority of over 200."

Here's how some of the other parties did in the poll:

  • Reform UK unchanged on 14%
  • Liberal Democrats up one point on 11%
  • Green Party up one point on 6%
  • SNP down one point on 2%
  • Others up one on 7%

Mr Hopkins said the increase in vote share for the Greens and independent candidates is "notable".

"Not because it will have an impact on this election in any significant way, but could point towards trouble for the Labour Party in government and over the coming years," he added.

Some 2,092 UK adults were polled from 26-28 June. The comparison is with an earlier poll conducted from 21-24 June.

Thank you for watching tonight's edition of Politics Hub With Ali Fortescue .

We heard from:

  • Mark Spencer , Conservative candidate and farming minister;
  • Sir Anthony Seldon , educator and contemporary historian.

And on the panel were:

  • Max Wilson , former Labour political adviser;
  • Claire Pearsall , former Tory adviser.

Scroll down for all the key moments and highlights - and stick with us here in the digital Politics Hub for the latest political news throughout the evening.

Sir Anthony Seldon is our next guest on Politics Hub With Ali Fortescue .

He has penned a new book entitled '2010-2024: 14 wasted years?', and we ask for his reflections on the Tory years in power.

He says there were some good things, such as in education where standards rose, "aspects of pensions, aspects of science, aspects of the arts, Universal Credit".

But he goes on: "Overall, growth and productivity has been stagnant since the global financial crisis of 2007-8, and if we look at health, if we look at transport, if we look at housing, if we look at the state of defence, if we look at Britain's position in the world - we don't see the different historians and academics who wrote the book... there isn't the kind of significant change in the standard of all those various areas and other that we have tended to see in long periods of Tory government in the past."

He says there have been "some progressive, important, and incremental changes, but overall a disappointing performance, frankly".

"It's hard to think of any period of single-party domination by the Conservative Party that has achieved less than the party's achieved since 2010."

Infighting has been partly to blame, and it is also a party that is "unsure what it believes in" and is "confused", Sir Anthony says.

He also says "the flip flop" of policies and ideological direction has been a problem.

"There were so many opportunities that the Conservative government could have had for consistent and thoughtful policymaking, and it simply hasn't happened."

Despite the "stability" brought by Rishi Sunak and Lord Cameron, Labour is on track for "a very significant victory" on Thursday.

He notes that no party since 1832 have ever won five general elections in a row, and adds: "It is going to be a colossal Labour victory, akin to 1945."

Celebrities endorsing political parties is not a new phenomenon, but Sir Elton John publicly backing Labour today has got people thinking - do they actually help things shift?

Max Wilson, former Labour political adviser, tells the Politics Hub With Ali Fortescue that endorsements from the famous are a "good thing".

But, he says that they are unlikely to "shift the dial" or increase the number of votes.

"It is a nice thing to have, but I don't think it is a prerequisite to winning," he adds.

Former Tory adviser Claire Pearsall feels the idea has "really gone out of fashion".

"It has sort of slid away over the years... I would be more impressed if it was sort of Margaret from Burnley telling us exactly why she's voting for whichever party," she adds.

"We're now in the realms of understanding that real people want to see people like them."
