Your Guide to Snorkeling in Belize with the Best Spots and Tips

' src=

Featuring the second largest barrier reef in the world, snorkeling in Belize offers some of the best underwater viewing experiences in the Caribbean. The country has hundreds of cays and several marine parks with fantastic healthy coral reefs and abundant sea life. Add this premiere destination to your bucket list and enjoy swimming alongside nurse sharks, manatees, rays, whales, and turtles at the best Belize snorkeling spots!

Belize snorkeling conditions

There is much to discover for beginners and advanced underwater explorers here, but beach snorkeling in Belize is limited due to the shoreline’s characteristics.

Most reefs are located about 20-60 miles offshore and are, therefore, reachable by boat only, so plan your vacation accordingly and accept that you have to sign up for boat tours if you wish to access the best Belize snorkel spots.

What are the best months to snorkel in Belize?

The weather is generally good year-round, making snorkeling possible in all seasons. The climate is subtropical. Due to high humidity, it can rain anytime, so make sure that your packing list includes a rain jacket.

The dry season runs from December to May when you can expect little to no rain, making these the best months for snorkeling. March and April are especially recommended when the water is calm.

There is a wet season from June to October, which means rainfall will impact a few hours of the day. Otherwise, these months are a little warmer, with average temperatures around 80- 84°F (27-29°C). This isn’t a bad time to come either, as accommodation prices are lower than in the main season, but you need to prepare for interruptions due to weather conditions and/or trip cancellations.

To cut it short, if you are looking for the best visibility and warmest waters, arrive between April and early June before the rainy season starts and when the sea conditions are optimal for snorkeling. Moreover, this is the whale shark season too!

Do you need a wetsuit for snorkeling in Belize?

There isn’t much to worry about the sea temperatures since the Caribbean Sea is warm enough year-round. In winter, expect to enjoy 79-80F/25.6-26.6C warm water; in the summer, it typically goes up to 84-85F/28.8-29.4C.

Such temperatures are comfortable for swimming without a wetsuit, but if you tend to feel cold or plan to do long snorkeling sessions, a 3mm shorty can come in handy. Wearing UV protection clothing (rash guard) is necessary for all seasons to avoid sunburn, so pack it with your regular gear.

Best spots to go snorkeling in Belize

Ambergris caye.

If you prefer to explore areas that are still welcoming to tourists but aren’t filled with them, then you should visit Ambergris Caye. This stretch of area is home to several types of reef fish like snappers, angelfish, and damselfish, and you can experience swimming with nurse sharks and stingrays.

Sandy beach on Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye offers some of the best Belize offshore snorkeling, so this is an excellent place if you don’t want to take boats to the outer reef. If you decide to take a boat trip, you can quickly get to the nearby Mexico Rocks and Tres Cocos from here. These fantastic Belize snorkeling spots are available from a short ride from San Pedro and feature shallow reefs that are excellent for beginners, too.

The Split – Caye Caulker

Although there are no natural reefs around Caye Caulker, you’ll also find plenty of sea life here, which makes it a nice spot to visit for beginners. From smaller creatures such as crabs, sea horses, and lobsters to colorful parrot fish and stingrays, many animals can lurk around this Caye.

Caye Caulker underwater life

There is also an exciting shore snorkel spot here called The Split. It is technically a channel on the island’s northern tip that splits Caye Caulker. The channel is about 20-25 ft/6-7.6 m deep and provides a home to various aquatic life like sponges, anemones, certain corals, and fish species. On the sandy bottom, you can spot sea stars too.

Caye Caulker lies close to the area where sea cows can be seen ( Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary ), so if you want to see these beautiful, friendly creatures, you can quickly sign up for a manatee-watching tour here. Swimming with them is prohibited, but you can do this if you are lucky enough to encounter one while snorkeling at one of the reefs.

Manatee in Belize

The easiest way to get to Caye Caulker is by water taxi from Belize City. Several companies offer roundtrips and island hopping.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

When you visit Hol Chan, you can check off an item on your bucket list since this is where you can go snorkeling with sharks in Belize. This location is a 3 square mile marine reserve famous for its vibrant sea life and reef system display. If you want to swim with colorful fish, nurse sharks, giant stingrays, and turtles, this is the place to snorkel.

Brown stingray

The park is technically a 20-yard-wide, 25-foot-deep channel in the barrier reef that was dedicated to a national park in 1987 to keep the area safe from overfishing and allow the reef and marine life to recover.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is one of Belize’s most popular snorkeling spots, so it is easy to access by boat from Ambergris Caye. Because of its popularity, it is always busy, so book a morning trip to avoid crowds.

Shark Ray Alley

There is a particular Belize snorkeling spot in the Hol Chan Marine Reserve called Shark Ray Alley, where many harmless nurse sharks and stingrays gather.

The reason so many sharks come to this place is simple yet attractive: local fishermen used to clean their daily catch here by throwing the morsels in the water, so technically, they were feeding the sharks, and that’s why they always return to the area.

Nurse shark Belize

Now, no feeding is needed; the sharks (and giant stingrays, too) are already coming when they hear the motorboats, creating a local attraction for snorkelers and divers.

This is a unique snorkeling experience in Belize. Although these sharks are harmless, it might take a few minutes to get used to the feeling that they swim close and their skin touches yours. And the best is that there are fantastic corals in shallow water just a little south of Shark Point, so if you have time, ask your boatman to stop there, too!

Tip: Belize is often compared to other famous Caribbean Islands regarding snorkeling conditions. To get a clear picture of what destination you should visit, see more guides here: Roatan snorkel spots Snorkeling in Cozumel

Glover’s Reef Atoll

Glover’s Reef, a UNSECO World Heritage Site on the remote Southwest Caye atoll offers the most fantastic snorkeling in Belize with incredibly diverse marine life.

Exploring Glover’s Reef Atoll is an honor in itself. While snorkeling here, you can see everything from sea urchins, starfish, sea cucumber, damselfish, angelfish, nurse sharks, and stingrays. This fantastic reef life is just a short swim away from the shore, but you can easily take trips to the nearby coral shelf, too!

This exciting feature of Glover’s Reef is called The Wall. It’s an underwater cliff where the Caribbean Sea’s open-water area begins, and the reef drops 2500 feet. While you may be unable to snorkel to the bottom, you can see where the cliff suddenly drops off into the deep ocean. It’s eerie and fascinating.

Harvest Caye

Although Harvest Caye is not the top Belize snorkeling location, it is worth checking out for cruise ship passengers. It’s a recently built island where ships dock. It’s essentially an artificial private island with many activities, shopping, and lovely beaches.

Snorkeling from the shore might not be enjoyable because the water is shallow and often murky because of the sandy bottom. Still, you can join a snorkel trip from the marine that takes you to the reef, teeming with life, including hard and soft corals and various sea creatures like rays, sea stars, and critters.

One of the world’s most fascinating places is the Blue Hole in Belize. It is the largest ocean sinkhole in the world and can even be seen from space. If you’re looking for unique snorkeling in Belize, then you will find it at the Blue Hole!

Belize Blue Hole

The hole is 1,000 feet wide and 400 feet deep. It was created 15,000 years ago when the existing limestone cave collapsed as sea levels rose. The area around the hole is packed full of reefs to explore.

Some sea life you may encounter in the Blue Hole are Caribbean Reef Sharks, spotted drums, parrotfish, and several others. Diving in the Blue Hole is also possible, but you must be experienced.

Laughing Bird Caye

Suppose you’re wondering where to go snorkeling in Belize to find an extraordinary variety of marine life. In that case, you must go to Laughing Bird Caye, a national park and World Heritage Site in the central lagoon of the Belize Barrier Reef, 11 miles offshore of Placencia.

Snorkelers who have visited this area have reported seeing incredible snapper schools, barracuda, nurse sharks, turtles, and lobsters.

Laughing Bird Caye

Plenty of tours are available, ready to show you the best snorkeling spots. If you sign up for a Laughing Bird Caye trip, you will usually visit additional good snorkel spots, such as Lark Cayes, where you can snorkel over substantial coral heads.

Silk Cays – Turtle Alley

There are many extraordinary places for snorkeling in Belize, and Silk Cayes is one of them, where you’ll find tons of sea life and healthy reefs. This protected area lies 36 kilometers East of Placencia, and several operators offer tours there.

Turtle in Belize

Turtle Alley is the most famous spot in the area, where you can expect to see happy sea turtles swimming around, including a resident Loggerhead measuring more than 4 feet in length!

But there’s far more to discover. Nurse and lemon sharks and stingrays also live in this area.

Half Moon Caye

Half Moon Caye on the Lighthouse Reef, not so far from the famous Blue Hole, has a fantastic ecosystem to explore. The conservation area here measures 45 acres. It is home to the nesting Red Footed Booby Bird , and there are tons of snorkeling fun just waiting to be had.

The area features a great variety of marine life, including hermit crabs, reef sharks, large groupers, and different turtle species like loggerhead, green, and hawksbill.

Gladden Spit – Placencia

Most probably, the most exciting Belize snorkeling experience is swimming with the world’s largest fish, the whale shark! These gentle filter feeders -that grow up to 60ft long- are a seasonal attraction here.

They can be seen in the Gladden Spit Marine Reserve near Placencia every year between March and June as they migrate. Tour operators monitor the whale sharks’ migration to ensure a high chance of an encounter. (Hint: The best thing to do is schedule your trip for the full moon period.)

Belizean sustainable tourism practices regulate whale shark snorkeling and diving, so time slots are allocated for each tour operator to avoid crowding. You should also follow particular guidelines for your own and the creatures’ safety. Please take these very seriously; you will have an unforgettable lifetime experience!

If you want more advanced Belize snorkeling experiences, you should attempt to snorkel in Long Caye. Also called The Aquarium, this location is home to several fish species. It’s better suited for advanced snorkelers because of the often-strong ocean currents.

Divers will enjoy this area the most, but it is also an excellent place for snorkeling in Belize because the clear water makes observing sea life more accessible. You’ll be able to see sponges, fans, and other reef structures. If you decide to spend a few days in this dreamy environment, there is even a hotel here, Itza Resort.

Tobacco Caye

To explore the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, you should consider snorkeling in Tobacco Caye.

The island is only 5 acres long, and only 30 inhabitants occupy it. It would be best to consider staying at the Tobacco Caye Paradise Resort to get the most out of your snorkeling.

Barracuda and reef fish at the reef in Belize

You’re situated right on the water and able to enjoy its fresh food and relaxing environment the whole time. It also offers rentals for snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding.

Turneffe Atoll

Twenty miles off the coast of Belize City, Turneffe is the largest atoll of the Mesoamerican Reef System, surrounded by deep waters on all sides.

Consisting of more than 150 smaller and larger islands, it is one of the region’s ecologically most essential areas and, therefore, was declared a marine reserve. Turneffe offers the best snorkeling in Belize and the Caribbean with its clean, warm waters and extreme biodiversity.

Thanks to these surrounding nutrient-rich waters and their protection status, Turneffe’s vibrant reefs have healthy, stony, and soft corals frequented by larger fish like tarpons, groupers, and sharks. The mangrove shallows and seagrass beds are nursing grounds for juvenile fish and invertebrates, including threatened species.

Coco Plum Caye

Snorkeling in the Coco Plum Caye area means you should first book a room at the Coco Plum Island Resort . It’s a private island with adorable cabanas. Since it’s adult-only, it is a perfect honeymoon destination. If you are looking for a Belize snorkeling spot where tourists don’t clog up the beach, this is the area for you.

beach huts on the water at sunrise in Coco Plum Caye - Belize

You’ll find some of the favorites when you snorkel in this area: sea turtles, stingrays, groupers, and reef sharks are regular visitors on the reef. But if you wish to sunbathe on this picture-perfect island, we guarantee you will have an excellent time!

Where to stay in Belize for snorkeling?

Belize offers a variety of accommodations for its visitors. When deciding which resort to choose, consider whether you want to stay in a remote location where you can focus on relaxation while enjoying Belize’s underwater wonders or prefer a more central location to explore local life.

In the first case, choose a resort at one of the outer atolls, like Ambergris Caye, Glover’s Reef, or Turneffe. If you prefer to spend your vacation in a more touristy location, we recommend staying in Caye Caulker or Placencia.

See our recommendation on some Belize snorkeling resorts below:

Tranquility Bay Resort – Ambergris Caye

If you prefer shore snorkeling instead of signing up for boat excursions, staying at  Tranquility Bay Resort i s best. This unique beachfront accommodation lets you access fantastic marine life directly from the beach.

This resort is found at the northern end of Ambergris Caye. It is away from the tourist zone, and getting here takes a bit of effort, but if you want to spend your vacation fully relaxed while enjoying first-class snorkeling, this is a place to consider booking!

Glover’s Atoll Resort – Glover’s Reef

If you’re interested in exploring incredibly diverse marine life, make a reservation at the Glover’s Atoll Resort. It’s situated right next to the reef and lets you quickly start your snorkeling adventures from the beach.

They even have over-the-water rooms where you can access fantastic sea life directly from your room, but you can take boat trips to the nearby coral shelf, too!

Those who want to unplug and be in the water all day will find Glover’s Atoll Hotel the best local snorkeling resort in Belize.

Turneffe Island Resort – Turneffe Atoll

A family-friendly, secluded private island resort with fantastic white sand beaches and services/amenities to please everyone. The staff is very hospitable and highly qualified to provide guests with a safe and fun dive and snorkel experience.

Many excellent reef sites are just about 5-10 minutes boat ride from the resort, and Belize’s popular snorkeling sites, such as the Blue Hole, Lighthouse Reef Atoll, or Half Moon Caye, are also not too far from Turneffe.

Iguana Reef Inn – Caye Caulker

If you want to stay in Caye Caulker, book your stay at Iguana Reef Inn. The hotel is right on the water’s edge, nestled in an authentic Caribbean town. Its architecture alone heralds the Old Caribbean style.

You can snorkel right from the beach or join excursions organized by the resort. Shore snorkeling is not exceptional since there is no reef here, but you can see giant stingrays, seahorses, crabs, and fish. It is also easy to get to the Split snorkel spot from here.

Snorkeling in Belize

Imagine you are swimming surrounded by schools of dozens of nurse sharks, getting face to face with friendly stingrays, exploring the edge of a mangrove or meeting schools of tropical fish in healthy and shallow coral gardens… Open your eyes…. You are snorkeling in Belize! With an extensive barrier reef located just off its coast, Belize is a perfect snorkeling destination. It has snorkeling sites to suit everyone, even if you’ll need to take a boat tour to reach most of them.

Belize is partly located on the vast Mesoamerican barrier reef system (the second biggest barrier reef in the world, after Australia’s, and the biggest in the northern hemisphere), which runs along 600 miles (1000km) of the coastline of Mexico , Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras .

This barrier reef, which Charles Darwin described as “the most remarkable reef in the West Indies”, has been listed since 1996 as a UNESCO World Heritage site because of the variety of its ecosystems (atolls, hundreds of cases, mangrove forests, coastal lagoons, and estuaries) and its biodiversity.

It is estimated that 36 species of soft coral, 70 species of hard coral, and nearly 500 species of fish inhabit Belize’s barrier reef. It is common to see sharks, rays, turtles, or West Indian manatees.

Snorkeling in Ambergris Caye - San Pedro, Belize

The continental coasts of Belize, edged with tropical forests and mangroves, are not suited to snorkeling. You need to take a boat (or a plane) to the barrier reef, a few miles off the coast.

The most accessible and popular area is Ambergris Caye (and its main town, San Pedro) and Caye Caulker, from where you can explore the wonderful snorkeling spot of Hol Chan Cut and the very famous Shark Ray Alley .

The variety of snorkeling destinations, the clarity of the water, and the accessibility of the islands mean that there is something for snorkelers of all levels.

If it’s an adventure you are after, the more distant atolls of Lighthouse Reef (which includes the Blue Hole National Monument), Turneffe Islands, or Glovers Reef are exceptional spots, providing you have a big budget and you don’t mind spending several hours sailing in the open sea.

When to go snorkeling Belize?

You can go snorkeling all through the year in Belize since the climate is tropical and so constantly hot and humid. The rainy season, from June to November, can make outings tricky and reduce the clearness of the water.

This is the hottest period (over 86°F/30°C). It is also the season when hurricanes may hit the Belize coasts. In the dry season, and particularly in December and January, the temperature rarely goes above 80°F/26°C during the day and falls to less than 68°F/20°C at night.

The water temperature is relatively constant, around 82°F/28°C, with variations between the coldest months (December-January) and the hottest (July-August). All through the year, the wind can come up for several days at a time and prevent boats from sailing.

#1 Hol Chan Marine Reserve

best snorkeling trips in belize

Coming in at number 1, the Hol Chan Marine Reserve is without a doubt one of the most amazing places to snorkel in Belize.

As the country’s oldest reserve, this marine national park in the north of the country is teeming with incredible marine life.

At only 6km from Ambergris Caye, it makes for a very popular day trip.

Essentially a small channel within Belize’s Barrier Reef, the reserve is split into 4 different zones, each with their own flavour.

Do some research on Hol Chan Marine Reserve to decide which zone you want to visit and then plan your trip accordingly.

#2 Shark Ray Alley

Technically a zone within the Hol Chan Marine Reserve – Zone 4 to be specific! – Shark Ray Alley is probably the best Belize snorkelling spot if you want to see, yes you guessed it – some sharks and some rays!

From lemon sharks to nurse sharks and even some tiger, bull and black-tipped reef sharks thrown in, this place is amazing!

There are also a huge number of rays to be seen here, including yellow stingrays and spotted eagle rays, the tips of which can often be seen breaking the surface of the water even as you approach in the boat!

#3 Turneffe Reef Atoll

best snorkeling trips in belize

The largest of the 3 atolls in Belize’s Barrier Reef, Turneffe Reel Atoll is also the most northerly in this collection, meaning it’s a full day trip to get here from Caye Caulker, where many people stay.

Established as a marine reserve in 2012, and largely comprised of hundreds of small mangrove islets, you have a very good chance of spotting turtles out at Turneffe Reef, who come to feed off the rich waters created by this ecosystem.

The place is also teeming with lionfish, which are hunted here as part of a population control method, so you may even get one for dinner if you’re lucky!

Turneffe Reef Atoll is also famous for its primary dive site, The Elbow, which features a 30m drop off into the deep blue waters below.

#4 Lighthouse Reef Atoll

The second atoll in Belize’s Barrier Reef, Lighthouse Atoll is also furthest from the coast, which means you’ll need to pick a calm day to visit here if you want the smoothest boat ride possible!

However, many people make the journey out here, even in rough conditions, because of the reef’s massive drawcard – the famous Great Blue Hole , which is the world’s largest underwater sinkhole.

At 124m deep, there isn’t much fish life here, but giant stalactites are the main drawcard and, of course, the kudos to say you’ve been here!

As well as the Great Blue Hole, Lighthouse Reef Atoll also features both Half Moon Caye and Long Caye Wall which do have amazing fish life.

Just enter your details below and I'll email it you - simple!

Information will be sent to the email provided above

#5 Glover’s Reef Atoll

best snorkeling trips in belize

The 3 rd Atoll in Belize’s Barrier Reef, this one is the most southerly and was named after a couple of pirate brothers!

Part of the World Heritage area, this atoll is 145km big and is surrounded by sheer drop-offs that plunge metres down into the Caribbean deep blue.

#6 Gladden Spit

This top Belize snorkelling spot is most famous because of its whale shark population which can easily be spotted here between the months of March to June.

One of the largest creatures in the ocean, these amazing creatures come here to feast on the many spawning fish populations, which result from the healthy marine life.

This means the magnificent whale sharks can easily be viewed by scuba divers and snorkelers alike.

Located in the south of Belize, trips to Gladden Spit leave from the coastal town of Placencia, so head here if you want the once in a lifetime opportunity to see these incredible giants.

#7 Coral Gardens

best snorkeling trips in belize

Known for its diversity of coral, this is probably the best Belize snorkelling site for beginners.

Indeed, the shallow depths, yet incredible diversity, of the Coral Gardens, make it the ideal location if this is your first time donning a snorkel and mask!

Located on the inner side of the reef, Coral Gardens are also sheltered, which means currents here are less strong and swimming around to see the tons of colourful fish is much easier.

Right near Caye Caulker and part of the local marine reserve there, this place is an easy half-day trip is you want just a shorter snorkel excursion and is normally paired with Shark Ray Alley.

#8 Mexico Rocks

Another shallow site, Mexico Rocks is the ideal Belize snorkelling site for marine photographers, as the great visibility here, means of the colours of the coral real pop in front of the lens.

Located only a 20 minute boat ride from Ambergris Caye, Mexico Rocks showcases a delightful array of boulder coral and brain coral and is one of the top places to spot lobsters and eels.

At only 12ft deep, this snorkel site is also nicely sheltered and usually quite calm with tons of angelfish and yellowtail snapper regularly seen.

#9 Goff’s Caye

And finally, the 9 th best Belize snorkelling spot goes to Goff’s Caye.

Actually more of a tropical island, experiencing a day trip here also provides you with ample time to enjoy the white sands and laze under a tropical palm tree or 4!

Great for kids, this place is also popular with cruise ships and is only 30 mins from Belize City.

With a huge selection of brilliant-coloured fish, as well as the occasional turtle and dolphin, Goff’s Caye is definitely a good choice if you are basing yourself in or near the capital.

Hey Steph, I’ve heard of so many amazing places to go snorkeling in Belize. I spent tons of time in Central America but couldn’t get to Belize and kept hearing of people’s top places to visit and they were always place for snorkeling and diving. Shark alley sounds incredible just not sure I could get my wife to join me on this. I knew there were some whale sharks and being from the Philippines I’m glad to hear other spots for whale shark watching. It’s currently a mess out here with very unethical practices. Hope to visit there one day soon. Cheers,

Hi Anthony, definitely get there if you can, so much amazingness to see. Sad to hear about the unethical diving situation in the Philippines, definitely avoid those spots. Panama is another great place to see them and of course Australia’s west coast too!

Belize is fantastic, both above and below the water. The Blue Hole was awesome. I loved the Shark Ray Alley as well. Could see several rays here.

Wicked Samuel, so happy you had a great time in Belize. If you’re into the underwater world, it’s definitely a must-see 🙂

Are there places to snorkel in Belize where you’re not on a rigid tour timeline? I’m reading about tours that only spend an hour or two in one spot. Ideally, we’d like to find a great place to hang out for the day(s) and go in and out of the water as we please. Even better would be a place to stay for several days without relying on hired boats to get you to snorkeling spots. Any recommendations?

Hi Laura, thanks for your question. It would really be best to speak to the individual operators regarding this question, as I can’t speak for them or their tours I’m afraid. I’m sure if you send them an email they’ll be happy to answer your questions, as the responses will, of course, depend on the time of year and particular location of your visit. It is also worth bearing in mind that many of the best snorkelling places are either protected or isolated reefs, so staying on the them or visiting without an official tour isn’t possible.

I am also wondering if I could snorkel in Belize and stay in one place for a while rather than snorkel for an hour and then be shuttled away. Are there private biats you can rent that will let you be on your own timeline?

Hi Terry, I would think there are, but sadly don’t have personal experience on this to advise. Likely it might be a private tour / boat rental and therefore a little more pricey. Would love to hear how you get on. Please let me know so we can help other travellers. Thanks Steph

Thanks Steph . We are still trying to decide if we will like Belize. Sounds like a boat ride is required for much of the snorkeling . It doesn’t sound like there is much shore snorkeling or could you rent a kayak?

Hi Terry, sorry I was in Belize years ago and can’t remember if there are kayaks or not I’m afraid.

Thanks for the tips! Could you please change the intro to read “located at the southern end of the North American continent, Belize is both Central American, Caribbean and a commonwealth”

Thanks for the tip Pat and glad you enjoyed the post 🙂

I have heard good things about Laughing Bird Caye. A short trip out from Placencia, you can snorkel at your leisure, hang on the beach, etc. Do you have any insights about it?

Hello Ralph, thanks for reaching out – I haven’t heard anything about Laughing Bird Caye, no. I do like the name though! Let me know your findings!

best snorkeling trips in belize

Our family went to Laughing Bird Caye. It was the best snorkeling we have ever done. Went all the way around the island with a guide, Tulu. No rush, just had to catch the ferry back to our ship. To compare, we have snorkeled in Bonaire, Mexico, St. Lucia, Barbados, Antigua, Curacao, Aruba, and many other Caribbean islands. Laughing Bird Caye is what led me to this article! I was looking for the best area to stay with our family in Belize for a week or two! I wasn’t sure if the coast of Belize had snorkeling like Laughing Bird, or other amazing spots! If you have the opportunity, take it!

Thanks so much for joining the conversation Kimberly – it’s so great to have such detailed, personal input here and I really appreciate you taking the time to leave your comments. Best, Steph

Do you have recommendations for hotel or tour company for family with six kids, ages 8-15? Family friendly, budget and safety are all considerations. Thank you!

Hi Velynda, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment here. Unfortunately, as I’m a solo traveller, I don’t know much about the best family travel accommodation / tour options in Belize and don’t like to recommend something I haven’t experienced myself. Hope you find something that suits you and enjoy your travels. Best, Steoh 🙂

The Best Snorkeling Spots in Belize

lighthouse reef in belize best spot for snorkeling

Internationally known for its amazing natural beauty, Belize provides some of the world’s best snorkeling. As a country that encompasses both Central America and the Caribbean, it has an incredibly diverse ecosystem. Pair this with a tropical climate that makes it perfect for water sports year-round, and it’s no wonder that visitors from all over the world flock here to play in its waters.

Depending on your sense of adventure, you can go on all-day snorkeling excursions or simply play in the water in between naps on a white sand beach. At the end of the day, you can enjoy a delicious dinner and drinks while watching the sun set over the crystal-clear waters that were your playground just a short while before.

What are the best places to go snorkeling in Belize? We’ve complied a list of our favorite spots.

Lighthouse Reef Atoll

lighthouse reef in belize best spot for snorkeling

Lighthouse Reef is the atoll furthest from the mainland. Its most notable attraction is the Great Blue Hole . Jacques Cousteau made this UNESCO World Heritage Site famous. Scientists as well as divers have traveled to examine its depths. At an impressive 1000 feet across and 400 feet deep, this magnificent site is on many peoples’ bucket list.

This region also boasts an underwater marine trail and 6 cayes, including Half Moon Caye. Thanks to its shallow waters, this island is a wonderful location for novice snorkelers. Even more experienced visitors will be delighted, however, thanks to the coral reefs and the over 200 varieties of fish in the area.

In addition to the great snorkeling at Half Moon Caye , there is a colony of the rare Red Footed Boobies. The Belize Audubon Society runs the island and works to preserve this species. You can take a break from the water to stroll to an observation tower which will allow you a wonderful view of the birds.

Another great location for snorkelers around Lighthouse Reef Atoll is the “Aquarium”, so dubbed because of its towering coral formations and brilliant tropical fish.

For visitors to Ambergris Caye and some of the other popular tourist destinations in Belize, taking a tour to Lighthouse Atoll is one of the must-do activities. However, snorkelers should beware that many of the tour boats are more geared for divers. To optimize your snorkeling experience, try to find one that is more tailored to that activity.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

hol chan marine reserve in belize best spot for snorkeling

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is Belize’s oldest marine reserve and one of the most amazing snorkeling locations in the country. It’s conveniently located just a few miles from Ambergris Caye, one of the most popular tourist spots in Belize.

There are 4 distinct areas you can explore. These are Shark Ray Alley, the reef, the mangrove habitat and the seagrass beds.

One of the most popular is Shark Ray Alley. Here you’ll definitely see gentle nurse sharks and gorgeous rays. You may also see lemon, tiger, bull and black-tipped reef sharks, yellow stingrays, spotted eagle rays, moray eels, and many other types of sea life. The nurse sharks are so gentle you can pet them underwater. Many tour guides will carry chum to attract them to the boat, and they are so used to this that they are quite docile.

Thanks to the shallow waters, great visibility and clean white sands, this is a wonderful spot for snorkelers of all levels. You will definitely want to check out some of the other aeras while you are here. In other parts of the Hol Chan reserve, you might see giant sea turtles, for example, or playful dolphins and serene manatees.

Turneffe Reef Atoll

turneffe reef in belize

Stretching 30 miles long and 10 miles wide, Turneffe Reef was designated a marine reserve in 2012. It has hundreds of mangrove islets teeming with nutrients. Here, you’ll be able to swim with the sea turtles who come to feed from this rich ecosystem.

The area also has an abundance of lionfish, which are considered an invasive species. Hunting them is not just allowed, it is encouraged. They are apparently quite tasty, if you’d fancy one for dinner!

Another attraction is “The Elbow”, which features an 80-foot drop. Its swift current makes it suitable to more experienced snorkelers and divers. Here you’ll find giant barracudas, sharks and schools of huge grouper.

Turneffe Reef is the largest of Belize’s atolls and the closest to Belize City . It’s also a popular day trip from Caye Caulker.

Glover’s Reef Atoll

belize glovers reef

Glovers Reef is the 3rd of the Belize Barrier Reef’s atolls. It’s the southernmost one and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. In its clear waters and shallow lagoon there are over 700 patch reefs that you can explore. Because the reef drops a dramatic 2600 feet at one point, you’ll find some truly diverse sea life here, which makes it a top-notch destination for snorkeling. Since it’s some distance from other tourist spots, you may end up staying on Southwest Caye.

Gladden Spit

gladden spit in belize best spot for snorkeling

If you’d like to see magnificent whale sharks, you’ll want to visit Gladden Spit between March and June. These gentle giants come here to feast during that time period. This fabulous diving and snorkeling spot is located close to Placencia, which is a tourist location also known for its beaches.

best snorkeling trips in belize

Coral Gardens

belize coral reef

Probably the best site for beginners, Coral Gardens is so named due to its diversity of coral. You will be enchanted by the many beautiful varieties of both colorful corals and tropical fish that you will find in its shallow waters. Thanks to its sheltered location, the currents here will not overpower novices or those who are not strong swimmers.

It is located conveniently close to Caye Caulker and is not far from Ambergris Caye, which makes it an easy place for tourists to visit.

As you can see, Belize is home to some amazing places to snorkel. While we’ve named some of our favorite spots, we’ve barely scratched the surface of locations that are wonderful for you to don a mask and fins. For example, both Mexico Rocks and Goff’s Caye are often visited by tourists looking for short snorkeling trips. Given the many miles of coastline, the abundance of cayes, and the proximity to the Belize Barrier Reef , it’s no wonder Belize is a wonderland for snorkelers.

A Guide To Snorkelling The Belize Barrier Reef

best snorkeling trips in belize

Snorkelling is a water activity that involves swimming with a mask, snorkel, and fins, but without the use of self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (SCUBA). Snorkeling can be done in two ways: snorkel swimming, which is done on the surface of the water, and snorkel diving, which involves breath-hold diving and swimming below the surface.

The Belize Barrier Reef, stretching from Bacalar Chico to the Bay of Honduras, is a vast network of small islands (cayes) and home to breathtaking corals and a rich variety of marine life. It is the ultimate destination for a tropical snorkeling adventure.

About The Belize Barrier Reef

The Belize Barrier Reef is the longest in the Western Hemisphere and the fifth longest in the world, running parallel to the coast. Offshore, protected by the reef, are over 200 cayes. Three of the Caribbean’s four atolls – Glover’s Reef, Turneffe Islands, and Lighthouse Reef – lie just outside of the reef. Atolls are ring-shaped coral islands surrounding a lagoon, typically found in the South Pacific and always beautiful. There are three types of cayes – wet cayes, which are submerged part of the time and can only support mangrove swamps; bare coral outcroppings that are uninhabitable; and sandy islands with palm trees, jungle shrubbery, and their own set of animals. The more inhabited cayes are located in the northern part of the reef and include Caye Caulker, Ambergris Caye, St. George’s Caye, and Caye Chapel.

The sea is a magical world that holds countless wonders within its depths. While humans are just beginning to explore these wonders, some predict that the world’s oceans will provide humans with all needed nutrients in the future, allowing people to live comfortably alongside the fish of the sea. However, for now, people are content to observe what’s there, often through a small, round window on a diving mask.

barrier reef at Half-Moon Caye

The Belize Reef’s water is exceptionally clear, allowing you to immerse yourself in a world of color simply by looking through a diving mask. The coral comes in a variety of hues that resemble a rainbow – from pale pinks and flashy reds to deep purples and flamboyant greens, with a multitude of colors in between. Coral is a unique limestone formation that takes on innumerable shapes, including delicate lace trees with reaching branches, pleated mushrooms, stovepipes, petaled flowers, fans, domes, heads of cabbage, and stalks of broccoli.

Corals are the result of millions of tiny carnivorous polyps that live in large colonies of individual species and feed on minute organisms. These small creatures can range from less than half an inch long to as large as six inches in diameter. Polyps, related to jellyfish and anemones, require sunlight and clear saltwater that is not colder than 70° F to survive. These cylinder-shaped creatures have one end attached to a hard surface, such as the bottom of the ocean, the rim of a submerged volcano, or the reef itself, while the mouth end is encircled with tiny tentacles that capture their prey with a deadly sting. Coral reefs form when polyps attach themselves to each other, creating large colonies that take on various shapes and sizes.

As these tiny creatures continue to reproduce and die, their sturdy skeletons accumulate, gradually building a strong foundation for a coral reef. Over time, broken bits of coral, animal waste, and granules of soil contribute to the construction of a reef that will slowly rise toward the surface. To continue growing, a reef requires a base no deeper than 82 feet below the water’s surface. In a healthy environment, a reef can grow between one to two inches per year. It’s worth noting that one small piece of coral represents millions of polyps and many years of construction.

Top Snorkell Spots In Belize

For the best snorkeling experience in Belize, head to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve , Southwater Caye Marine Reserve, Glover’s Reef Atoll, or Lighthouse Reef Atoll. These premier destinations offer a truly remarkable undersea world that few places on earth can match. You can snorkell in Belize all year round, but the dry season from November to May is the best time to visit and explore the Belize Barrier Reef, where visibility remains constant year-round away from the mainland shore.

When planning your Belize snorkeling adventure, be sure to bring a lightweight wetsuit or a spandex / lycra dive suit to keep you from getting cold, especially when spending extended time in the water. Polypropylene or capilene long underwear is another option that doubles up as protection from sunburn. Wearing a wetsuit or long underwear also reduces the need for full-body application of sunscreen in the water, which can harm corals and cause bleaching.

Belize is home to hundreds of the world’s most unique underwater creatures. Snorkel with the gentle giants, West Indian Manatees, which can grow up to 15 feet in size, and the females can weigh up to 3000 pounds, though typically they will be 10 feet and 1500 pounds. The best areas to spot these incredible creatures are at the Village of Gale’s point, near Dangriga, and the Swallow Caye Marine Reserve, which can be accessed from Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye .

Marine Animals To Snorkell With

When snorkeling in Belize, you can spot various species of marine animals, such as rays, sea turtles, and whale sharks. Here are some details on the animals you may encounter:

Rays: There are three main species of rays to look out for in Belize: the southern stingray, the spotted eagle ray, and manta rays.

Sea Turtles: Belize is home to three species of sea turtles: the green turtle, the hawksbill, and the loggerhead turtle. The ideal feeding and nesting conditions make Belize a popular spot for these creatures to gather. Snorkelling in Belize offers a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience these fascinating reptiles in their natural habitat.

Whale Sharks: Although not a whale, the whale shark is the world’s largest fish. These gentle giants congregate in Belize during the spring months when snappers are spawning in the area. One great spot to see them is at Gladden Spit, near Placencia in the southern part of Belize. It’s a popular experience for snorkellers to swim along with these docile creatures.

Snorkelling Basics

Snorkelling in the tropics is an excellent way to explore the underwater world, and it doesn’t require any particular skill or expensive equipment. Belizean snorkelling guides are experts at teaching the simple techniques needed to enjoy snorkeling. In the areas we suggest, the water is usually shallow enough to stand in, and you start by entering the water from the beach. As you become more experienced, you can learn to enter and exit the water from the tourist boat, which allows the snorkeller to experience longer and deeper dives, including drift dives where you float along a patch of coral with the tourist guide boats drifting behind the snorkelling group.

Belizean tour guides take great care to protect the coral reefs you visit so that future generations can enjoy them. We should all avoid damaging the coral by not touching, standing on, or dropping anchor on it. Some corals have nematocysts, which they use to sting their prey. These same nematocysts can sting humans, causing anything from mild discomfort to severe pain. To ensure the safety of all participants, your guide will show you the types of coral that should be avoided.

If you tend to get cold easily, it is recommended to wear a lightweight wetsuit or ‘shortie’ to keep warm during extended time in the water. Polypropylene or capilene long underwear works just as well and also provides protection against sunburn. We highly recommend wetsuits for children as well.

Snorkell Near Ambergris Caye

If you’re looking for the best and most easily accessible snorkeling spot in Belize, head to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. This reserve is located near San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, and Belize City, so you can easily reach it on a day trip. The reserve is divided into four main sections: the Hol Chan Cut, the Seagrass Beds, the Mangroves, and Shark Ray Alley. Each section has its own unique features, but the most popular and impressive snorkeling spots are Shark Ray Alley and the Cut. At Shark Ray Alley, you can swim among docile nurse sharks and southern stingrays. The Cut provides a chance to swim through a channel in the reef and view healthy elkhorn coral, moray eels, sea turtles, and colorful fish, including French angelfish, Spanish hogfish, and blue tang.

Snorkell With Whale Sharks

Gladden Spit, located in the southern part of Belize, is the ultimate destination for snorkeling with whale sharks, which migrate through the area from March to June. To maximize your chances of spotting these enormous fish, plan your trip around the full moon. It’s important to note that the government regulates the number of tour boats allowed in the whale shark areas to protect the wildlife. So, if swimming with whale sharks is on your Belize bucket list, make sure to book your spot in advance. Tours to Gladden Spit depart from Placencia, a town on the mainland of southern Belize. As part of the Belize Barrier Reef System, the marine reserve is situated approximately 28 miles (45 km) off the coast of Placencia.

Belize has a range of snorkeling destinations to suit a variety of budgets and time constraints. From secluded multi-day adventures on remote atolls to easy day trips close to the mainland, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Here are the best places to go snorkeling in Belize.

  • Hol Chan Marine Reserve

The Hol Chan Marine Reserve is one of the best and most easily accessible places to snorkel in Belize. You can reach the marine reserve on day trips from San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, and Belize City.

The marine reserve includes four main sections: the Hol Chan Cut, the Seagrass Beds, the Mangroves, and Shark Ray Alley. Each place offers something unique, but the best and most popular snorkel spots are Shark Ray Alley and the Cut.

Access is by boat only. There is a fee to enter the marine reserve, which guided tours typically include in the cost.

  • Mexico Rocks and Tres Cocos

Tres Cocos and Mexico Rocks have calm, shallow waters and are enjoyable places to visit for beginners and advanced snorkelers. You can reach both sites with a short boat ride from San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and easily combine them with Hol Chan Marine Reserve.

The clear waters have spectacular visibility, allowing snorkelers to fully take in the area’s vibrant corals and diverse sea life. In addition to brain coral and gorgonians, you can see rays, hawksbill turtles, spiny lobsters, eels, grunts, yellowtail snappers, and other tropical fish.

  • Lighthouse Reef Atoll

Lighthouse reef Atoll belize

At 55 miles (88 km) from the mainland, Lighthouse Reef is one of the most remote atolls in Belize. Getting there requires a boat ride lasting a few hours, but the trip is well worth it. Lighthouse Reef contains gorgeous cayes and amazing places to snorkel.

The atoll is home to Belize’s famous Great Blue Hole, a circular sinkhole that is a dream destination for many travelers. The Blue Hole is a world-class dive site, but snorkelers can also enjoy the awe-inspiring views as the underwater cavern plunges to a depth of around 410 feet (125 meters). 2

Half Moon Caye on the southeast edge of the Lighthouse Reef is another excellent destination. The island is protected as a marine reserve and bird sanctuary and is one of the most beautiful cayes in all of Belize. Half Moon Caye has a variety of snorkeling spots with shallow waters that are suitable for snorkelers of all skill levels.

Long Caye, also called ‘The Aquarium,’ is a great spot, but it’s better for experienced snorkelers due to ocean currents. The clear waters offer incredible underwater visibility and are filled with colorful fish and other marine life.

  • Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Reserve

Gladden Spit is the best place in Belize to snorkel with whale sharks, which migrate through the area between March and June. Plan your trip around the full moon for the best chance of spotting these enormous fish.

To protect wildlife, the government strictly controls the number of tour boats allowed in the whale shark areas at any given time. Make sure to book your spot early if swimming with whale sharks is on your Belize bucket list.

Tours to Gladden Spit leave from the town of Placencia on the mainland in southern Belize. The marine reserve is part of the Belize Barrier Reef System and lies about 28 miles (45 km) off the coast of Placencia.

Another top site within the marine reserve is Turtle Alley near Silk Cayes. Visitors can spot hawksbill, loggerhead, and green sea turtles in addition to stingrays, nurse sharks, lemon sharks, snappers, barracudas, and corals.

  • Glover’s Reef Atoll

Glover’s Reef Atoll is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a paradise for snorkelers and scuba divers. The oval-shaped atoll contains a lagoon with thriving marine life and hundreds of pristine patch reefs to explore.

You’ll need to take a boat to get to Glover’s Reef Atoll. The trip takes about two hours from Dangriga on the mainland.

The best way to experience this remote area is by staying at one of the resorts on the small cayes. The rustic overwater bungalows are perfect for those seeking a secluded spot to enjoy Belize’s aquatic wonders.

  • Turneffe Atoll

grey angle fish at Turneffe atoll

Turneffe is the largest coral atoll in the Caribbean and has some of Belize’s best snorkeling 3 . If you want to visit the atoll on a day trip, plan for a full-day excursion.

While Turneffe is the closest atoll to the mainland, it still takes about 1.5 hours to get there from Belize City. The atoll also makes a fantastic getaway for travelers who want to spend a few days or more exploring this underwater wonderland, with various resorts offering all-inclusive snorkeling packages.

Turneffe Atoll’s diverse ecosystems are home to varied sea creatures, including rays, sea turtles, lobsters, reef fish, and dolphins. If you’re lucky, you may even spot manatees swimming nearby. Keep in mind that it’s illegal to swim with manatees in protected habitats like the Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary. If you see manatees in the wild outside of these areas, give them plenty of space and do not approach them.

  • Caye Caulker

sunset at caye caulker belize

The small island of Caye Caulker is one of the most accessible snorkeling destinations from mainland Belize. You can stay on the laid-back island or take a day trip or water taxi from Belize City or Ambergris Caye.

The best places to snorkel near the island are Coral Gardens, the Split, and Shark Ray Alley (this site is a different location from Shark Ray Alley in the Hol Chan Marine reserve). Most guided tours include all three of these stops.

Coral Gardens is one of Belize’s top snorkel sites for beginners. The shallow waters have clear visibility and offer the chance to see colorful corals and many species of fish.

The Split is a channel separating Caye Caulker in two and is the only place on the island where you can snorkel directly from the shore. The area’s seagrass beds and mangroves are home to pufferfish, starfish, southern stingrays, and butterflyfish. Stick to the edges of the channel to avoid boat traffic, kayaks, and other swimmers.

If you want to see Caye Caulker’s Shark Ray Alley, you’ll need to visit on an organized tour. Once you’re there, you can swim through the clear, shallow water and observe the numerous stingrays and nurse sharks in the seagrass beds.

  • Tobacco Caye

tobacco caye belize

Tobacco Caye is a tiny island on the Belize Barrier Reef, located within the South Water Caye Marine Reserve. With a year-round population of 30 people, the remote caye is an ideal place to relax and unplug.

The calm, clear waters make Tobacco Caye a paradise for snorkelers, divers, and paddlers looking for an off-the-grid spot. There are several rustic accommodation options on the island, including waterfront cabins at Tobacco Caye Paradise where you can snorkel directly from your room. To reach the caye, you can take a 30-minute boat ride from Dangriga on the mainland.

  • Best snorkeling tours

There are a wide range of snorkeling tours available in Belize to fit your time constraints, location, and budget. For those in Belize City with limited time, we recommend this half-day tour to Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Caye Caulker or this 5-hour boat trip to Caye Caulker, Coral Gardens, and Shark Ray Alley.

If you’re staying in Caye Caulker, this 4-hour excursion features six different snorkeling sites within the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and lunch aboard the boat. For travelers in Ambergris Caye, this full-day snorkeling and sailing tour takes you from San Pedro to Caye Caulker, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, and Shark Ray Alley aboard a 40-foot sailboat.

  • Best places to stay

Belize’s islands and atolls offer fantastic places for snorkelers to stay when visiting this Central American nation. Off The Wall Dive Center & Resort on Glover’s Reef Atoll is one of the best places to stay for divers and snorkelers, with options to add guided snorkeling and scuba diving tours to your accommodation package. On Lighthouse Reef Atoll, we recommend Huracan Diving Lodge , located only 12 minutes from the famous Blue Hole. For travelers seeking an extremely secluded spot, the rustic beach cabanas at Tobacco Caye Paradise are an excellent place to unwind.

If you’re looking for a less remote location, the town of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye is just a short boat ride away from the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Mexico Rocks, and Tres Cocos. Xanadu Island Resort is a top pick in San Pedro, with complimentary kayaks, paddle boards, and bicycles.

  • Belize snorkeling FAQ

Can you snorkel from the beach in Belize?

The coast of mainland Belize primarily consists of tropical forest and mangrove ecosystems that are not ideal for snorkeling. To reach the best snorkel spots, you’ll need to travel a few miles offshore to the Belize Barrier Reef or further out to one of three atolls.

Once you’re there, getting to many snorkel sites still requires a boat ride or kayak trip. One of the few exceptions on this list is the Split in Caye Caulker. Some of the resorts on Belize’s atolls and Tobacco Caye also have snorkeling right from the beach or from your overwater bungalow.

What can I see while snorkeling in Belize?

The Belize Barrier Reef is one of the world’s most diverse aquatic ecosystems. The reef is home to an abundance of sea life, including 500 fish species, 70 hard coral species, and 36 soft coral species, so you’ll have the chance to see a wide variety of sea creatures ( 1 ). Marine life sightings in Belize may include West Indian manatees, sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, nurse sharks, whale sharks, dolphins, conch, groupers, southern stingrays, snappers, barracudas, spiny lobsters, and numerous reef fish.

When is the best time to go snorkeling in Belize?

The best time to snorkel in Belize is from December to May, during the country’s dry season. This period is also the prime tourist season, so you should expect higher rates and busier attractions.

Although the subtropical climate allows for snorkeling and scuba diving throughout the year, showers and strong winds during the rainy season (June to November) can reduce visibility and make snorkeling less enjoyable. Hurricanes and tropical storms are also possible, with August, September, and October experiencing the highest chance of severe weather.

Water temperatures are relatively stable year-round. The sea hovers around 77-78°F (25°C) from November through March and rises to about 83-84°F (28-29°C) between April and October ( 2 ).

If you’re looking for a beautiful and exotic place to go snorkeling, then you should snorkel Belize! This Central American country is home to some of the most stunning coral reefs in the world and is teeming with marine life. Home to the famous Blue Hole and the second largest barrier reef in the world after the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced snorkeler, Belize has something to offer everyone.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to a wide variety of sea life, including coral gardens, sea turtles, rays, eels, sharks, and manatees.

Belize Barrier Reef Snorkeling Conditions

The water at Belize has an average visibility of 60 to 100ft with the lowest times being in the windier and stormier months between June to November. Generally, conditions for snorkeling are excellent. The temperature ranges from 77-84 degrees Fahrenheit, and the water is renowned for being crystal clear with great visibility for viewing the underwater world. Some people wear thin wetsuits in the winter months to enable them to snorkel for longer periods.

Although you can hire snorkeling gear at all of these locations, we recommend that you take your own and get familiar with it before you go, just to ensure that you get the best experience possible.

Belize Temperatures

  • Cooler months – Nov to March: approx. 77 degrees
  • Warmer months – April to Oct: approx. 84 degrees

Expect to see:

  • A myriad of colorful fish
  • Colorful Coral
  • Spotted Eagle Rays, Southern Sting Rays
  • Harmless Nurse Sharks, Reef Sharks (possibly whale sharks)
  • Sea Turtles
  • and much more…..

Night Snorkeling on Belize’s Barrier Reef

Some tour operators offer night snorkeling tours and these are thoroughly recommended. If you’ve never snorkeled at night, it’s a completely different, other-worldly experience not to be missed. Take along a good quality dive light and witness a whole new world of night creatures. Colors are so vivid when illuminated in the darkness by your torchlight.

Snorkeling with Whale Sharks

Although not guaranteed, there’s a good chance you’ll see whale sharks while snorkeling in Belize. These gentle giants are often seen swimming in the waters off Ambergris Caye and Glover’s Reef Atoll. Swimming with these majestic creatures is an unforgettable experience.

Belize Barrier Reef Snorkeling Spots

Hol chan marine reserve.

If you’re looking for a breathtaking snorkeling experience, look no further than the Hol Chan Marine Reserve in Belize. This reserve is home to some of the most diverse underwater life in the world and offers visitors a chance to see everything from coral reefs to tropical fish up close and personal.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

The reserve is located about four miles south of the shores of Ambergris Caye and can be easily accessed by boat. Once you arrive, you’ll be able to choose from a variety of snorkeling spots, each with its own unique ecosystem.

Our favorites are The Cut and Shark Ray Alley. At the Cut, you can snorkel through a 30ft deep, narrow channel between two coral reefs. In fact, the name Hol Chan translates to ” little channel”. The snorkeling here is excellent, and you’re likely to see all sorts of sea life.

Shark Ray Alley is one of the most popular spots in the reserve, and it’s easy to see why. As the name suggests, this is where you’ll find sharks and rays in abundance. Don’t worry though, these creatures are totally harmless and you can swim right alongside them!

Be warned that this site is extremely popular and snorkeling tours are plentiful.

Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Reserve

One of the biggest draws to Belize is the ability to swim, snorkel or dive with whale sharks. If you haven’t ever experienced this you definitely should add it to your bucket list. These majestic creatures can get up to 40ft (12m) long but don’t worry, they are filter feeders so they pose no threat to humans. The best time of year to see them is between March and June when they migrate through the area.

Gladden Spit Marine Reserve is the best location for doing this but you should definitely book well in advance as there are only a limited number of boats allowed into the whale shark areas at any given time.

You may observe hawksbill, loggerhead, and green sea turtles, as well as stingrays, nurse sharks, lemon sharks, snappers, barracudas, and corals at Turtle Alley near Silk Cayes.

Caye Caulker

Snorkeling at Caye Caulker in Belize is a great way to see some of the area’s best marine creatures. There are three main snorkeling spots on the island – Coral Gardens, the Split, and Shark Ray Alley.

Coral Gardens is an excellent spot for beginner snorkelers, as the waters are shallow and clear. You can see a variety of brightly-colored corals and fish here.

The Split is a channel that separates Caye Caulker into two halves, and it’s one of the only places on the island where you can swim right off the beach. This area is home to pufferfish, starfish, stingrays, and more.

Caye Caulker - Belize Snoreling Spots

Shark Ray Alley is only accessible by organized excursion, but it’s well worth the trip. This popular snorkeling spot is teeming with nurse sharks and stingrays.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced snorkeler, Caye Caulker has something to offer you. With crystal-clear waters and an abundance of marine life, it’s no wonder this island is a top destination for snorkeling in Belize.

Turneffe Atoll

If you’re looking for an amazing snorkeling experience, look no further than Turneffe Atoll in Belize. This large coral atoll is teeming with marine life and offers visitors a chance to see creatures they may never have the opportunity to see again.

Turneffe is the most accessible of the four atolls, with a 90-minute boat ride from Belize City. Visitors can spend a few days or more exploring this aquatic wonderland, with several resorts providing all-inclusive snorkeling packages.

Turneffe’s ecosystems include everything from rays to turtles, lobsters, reef fish, and dolphins. If you’re fortunate, you could see manatees swimming nearby. It’s illegal to swim with manatees in Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary or other protected habitats, but just seeing them in their natural habitat is an experience you won’t soon forget.

Whether you’re a seasoned snorkeler or someone who’s never even put on a pair of fins before, Turneffe is the perfect place to explore everything the Caribbean has to offer.

Lighthouse Reef Atoll

Lighthouse Reef Atoll is one of the most beautiful and secluded atolls in Belize. It is located 55 miles (88 km) from the mainland, and getting there requires a several-hour boat journey. However, it is well worth the trip, as Lighthouse Reef has some of the best snorkeling and diving spots in the world.

This is home to one of the world’s best blue holes, a circular sinkhole that is a real fantasy for many tourists. The Blue Hole is a diving Mecca, but snorkeling enthusiasts can also enjoy the stunning vistas as the underwater cave plunges to a depth of about 125 meters.

A fine site to visit is Half Moon Caye, which sits on the southeast coast of the Lighthouse Reef. The island is a marine reserve and bird sanctuary, and it is one of Belize’s most beautiful Cayes. Half Moon Caye has several snorkeling locations with shallow waters that are ideal for beginners and experienced divers alike.

However, if you’re looking for someplace to start, this tiny island is the perfect location. It’s also known as “The Aquarium,” and it’s a wonderful spot for advanced snorkelers as the ocean currents can be challenging. The clear seas provide amazing underwater views and are home to bright fish and other aquatic life.

Ambergris Caye

Ambergris Caye is one of the best places to go snorkeling in Belize. The region’s reefs are inhabited by a variety of fish including snappers, angels, damselfish, and stingrays. In fact, the best offshore snorkeling is available on Ambergris Caye.

If you’re looking for a great place to snorkel in Belize that isn’t saturated with tourists then Ambergris Caye could make it onto your list. With its beautiful reefs and variety of fish, it’s an excellent destination for anyone looking to explore the underwater world around Belize.

Nurse Sharks at Ambergris Caye - Belize Snorkeling

Tobacco Caye

Looking for a place to relax and get away from it all? Look no further than Tobacco Caye. This tiny island in the Belize Barrier Reef System is home to just 30 year-round residents, making it the perfect place to disconnect and unwind. With crystal-clear water and beautiful white sandy beaches, Tobacco Caye is a paradise for snorkellers, divers, and kayakers.

Throughout the Belize Atolls, there’s a broad range of accommodation, with a lot of it geared towards snorkelers and divers. Accommodation at Tobacco Caye Paradise is no exception with a number of secluded cottages right on the beach.

Glover’s Reef Atoll

Snorkelers looking for a good spot to explore Belize’s vibrant aquatic life should consider Glover’s Reef Atoll. The lagoon is home to an abundance of fish and hundreds of pristine patch reefs, making it a great spot for snorkeling.

To get to Glover’s Reef Atoll, you’ll have to take a boat. The trip from Dangriga on the mainland takes about two hours, so it’s best to make a day of it. Once you’re there, be sure to stay at one of the resorts on the tiny cays. The rustic overwater bungalows are ideal for people looking for a quiet location to enjoy Belize’s aquatic delights.

Glovers Reef Atoll - Belize Snorkel Spots

If you’re looking for a good spot to snorkel in Belize, Glover’s Reef Atoll is definitely worth considering. With its abundance of fish and pristine patch reefs, the lagoon is sure to please.

Tres Cocos & Mexico Rocks

Both Tres Cocos and Mexico Rocks are great spots for snorkeling, with calm seas and depths deep enough to swim in. They can easily be combined with a visit to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, which is just a short boat journey from San Pedro on Ambergris Caye.

The excellent visibility in the clear seas allows snorkelers to fully enjoy the colorful corals and varied sea creatures. In addition to brain coral and gorgonians, you may see rays, hawksbill turtles, spiny lobsters, eels, grunts, yellowtail snappers, and other tropical fish in this area.

No matter your experience level, snorkeling at Tres Cocos and Mexico Rocks is a must-do activity when in Belize.

Best snorkeling tours in Belize

If you’re looking for a sailboat & snorkel experience it’s hard to beat the full-day Sirena Azul Sailboat Tour of Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Caye Caulker. Setting off from Ambergris Caye you get to experience the sharks and rays of Shark Ray Alley for most of the day before heading off for a 2-hour tour of Caye Caulker. The return isn’t bad either as you relax on the yacht sipping a nice rum punch or two!

You can choose from a full list of tours that range from a few hours to a few days, but if you’re looking for the full package covering everything, then this 10-day See it All & Do it All Tour could be for you.

If you prefer a bit of privacy and independence you may want to look at a private charter . There’s a lot to be said for getting a personalized experience if this is a trip you’ve been looking forward to for some time.

It’s extremely important to note that as of 2018 Belize Barrier Reef was taken off the Endangered List of Heritage Sites, due to all the great work of the local government and UNESCO.

Having said that, we must all still do our part in maintaining this status for future generations.

Ways to help:

  • Instead of wearing sunscreen (harmful to coral & marine life), cover up with thin rash guards .
  • If you must wear sun lotion choose an eco-friendly sunscreen .
  • Everything you take to the reef, take away with you.
  • Do not touch coral.
  • Take no souvenirs.

Tropical Snorkeling – Destinations, Equipment & Safety Tips

Ambergris Caye Snorkeling – Only One Mile From the Reef

Ambergris Caye snorkeling is excellent, and it is the most popular area to snorkel from in Belize. We have taken many Ambergris Caye snorkeling trips, and share our experiences and what snorkel spots we liked most below.

Ambergris Caye is the biggest offshore island in the chain of over 200 along the coast. It is still inside the vast Belize barrier reef, but just barely.

The reef is only about a mile from the caye in some areas. And that is one of the reasons that Ambergris is the snorkeling (and diving) center of Belize.

Ambergris Caye snorkeling boat companies

Most Popular Ambergris Caye Snorkeling Spots

The vast majority of Ambergris Caye snorkeling spots are accessed by boat, out on the barrier reef, or patch reefs between Ambergris and the barrier reef.

The town of San Pedro is the hub for many different boat tours that will take you to a variety of snorkel spots around the reef. You can find companies that only run snorkel trips, and those that also combine diving and snorkeling on one boat trip. Our preference is to be on the boats that are just for snorkelers, but sometimes you have to join in with the divers.

There are four major locations that most of the snorkel boat companies go to. These are quick trips that generally take less than a half day. They are all inside the barrier reef. To learn more about each and to see our snorkel pictures click on each link below.

Shark Ray Alley – This spot is often combined in one boat trip with Hol Chan below. It is a great shallow snorkel spot that provides some exciting encounters with nurse sharks, rays, large schools of fish, and some wonderful coral areas.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve – This is the most popular Ambergris Caye snorkeling spot. You get a chance to see some bigger species because of the flush of current through this break in the barrier reef.

Tres Cocos – This location is often combined with Mexico Rocks below, and gives you a chance to swim with lots of fish and nice corals in a shallow area on the barrier reef.

Mexico Rocks – This inner patch reef area is in excellent snorkeling depths, and would make a good spot for beginners, because of its calmer waters.

Other Ambergris Caye Snorkel Spots

In addition to the above popular Ambergris Caye snorkeling spots, there are a handful of other locations. The trips to these locations are often diver and snorkeler combined. The divers often go to the outside of the reef, but these areas we know have good shallow snorkeling opportunities inside the reef.

Coral Gardens – This spot is inside the reef in sandy shallow waters just south of San Pedro. You can see some wonderful corals here as well as a variety of fish.

Tuffy Rocks -This is located next to the popular dive spot Tackle Box Canyons, just south of Tres Cocos, almost straight out from San Pedro. Tuffy Rocks has some great Ambergris Caye snorkeling, and is very good for checking out a variety of fish.

Mata Cut – This is a cut in the reef that is located a quick boat ride from San Pedro. Snorkeling here can be a mixed bag. The attraction is a shipwreck inside the reef in about eight feet of water. The wreck is covered in corals and is often teeming with fish. The downside to snorkeling here is that the wreck is very close to the cut in the reef and it is often rough with low visibility .

Mixed school of fish Ambergris Caye Belize

Basil Jones – To visit this Ambergris Caye snorkeling spot you normally have to persuade a boat company to take you. It is pretty far north and makes for a full day trip. But the lagoon behind the sandy beach here offers some good snorkeling and the backside of the reef close to the beach offers some completely unique coral formations. And because it is so far north, there tends to be more fish life.

Bacalar Chico – As far north as you can go, Bacalar Chico is a relatively new reserve with some excellent snorkeling opportunities (although we have not been able to catch a boat ride to it). The reef is reportedly pristine, with a large conch population, and also manatee sightings. There is a shallow area with a sandy bottom and big coral patches. There are deeper areas with huge coral heads and schools of barracudas. And closer to the reef there is a wall of coral with super clear water and hundreds of fish. Bacalar Chico is an excellent place to spot Loggerhead and Green Sea Turtles. If you can we highly recommend you do it.

Offshore Atolls – Ambergris Caye Snorkeling

Soft corals on reef near Ambergris Caye Belize

In addition to those Ambergris Caye snorkeling spots, you can also take longer boat rides to the offshore atolls. These are typically all day trips, starting early in the morning, and not returning until the evening. Most of these trips are combined dive and snorkel trips. We have yet to find a company running snorkel only trips to the atolls.

Lighthouse Reef Atoll – This atoll is over 50 miles offshore, and it is the home of the famous Blue Hole . You will want to read our information about doing this trip carefully before you decide to do it.

Turneffe Atoll – This is the closest of the three atolls to Ambergris. Unfortunately we have little experience snorkeling this atoll. But there are supposed to be some good areas on Turneffe.

We prefer to snorkel these outer atolls from a resort or liveaboard with our trips partner.

Snorkeling Sunburns Suck!

Check out the snorkeling rash guards , wetsuits , and reef safe sunscreen we use to protect ourselves and to protect fish and coral from sunscreen chemicals.

Note: Our suggestions are based on knowledge of the area. We hope you find them helpful. You can help us if you use the link(s) below. We may make a small commission, at no extra cost to you.

Ambergris Snorkel Boat Booking Tips

With all of these Ambergris Caye snorkeling spots you will want sign up with your snorkel boat company choice at least the day before, if not several. During the busiest season trips do book up, so you may even want to reserve your seats before you arrive in Belize. Most of the time that is not necessary. In fact, if you are not visiting during the busy season, you may have the opposite problem, the boat companies won’t run the trips because of not enough people.

If you have a group of four to six people, you can also find a local boat that you can charter just for your group, and have them take you to a handful of lesser known locations that are not as busy. You may need your own equipment for this option though.

We suggest you read reviews on TripAdvisor of the tour companies you are considering.

Best Places to Snorkel in Belize

Central America is a playground for travelers looking for sun, sand, parties, and nature. There are many destinations to fulfill this dream vacation and Belize is definitely at the top of the list. With year-round tropical weather and stunning surroundings on both land and water, a trip to Belize is hard to beat.

There are many accommodation options here, too, and the country is known for its world-class snorkeling spots. Whether you choose to book a hotel or stay at a house rental, there’s a breathtaking snorkeling spot for you to enjoy, even if it is quite expensive to fly to Belize .

Top Snorkeling Spots in Belize

Shark ray alley.

Shark Ray Alley

Divers always gush about seeing different species of sharks. In Belize, you don’t have to go too deep to get the same experience. As the name suggests,  Shark Ray Alley is the best zone to visit if you want to see some sharks and rays. There are different shark species residing in this area like

  • the nurse shark
  • lemon shark
  • tiger sharks
  • yellow stingrays
  • spotted eagle rays

The waters are shallow and clear making it excellent for any skill level of snorkeling.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Hol Chan Marine Reserve  is the bigger area to play in. Shark Ray Alley is a zone within this reserve, but the rest of the zones also offer some spectacular underwater sightseeing. As the country’s oldest marine reserve, Hol Chan is teeming with marine life. A quick dip in the water already surrounds you with different colored reef fish, corals, and even turtles. The reserve is  divided into 4 zones  (Shark Ray Alley is Zone D), and each zone has a different flavor.

Mexico Rocks

Mexico Rocks

A short boat rides away from the town of San Pedro is Mexico Rocks. At 12 feet, this shallow and sheltered snorkeling spot is home to lobsters and eels. It’s also great for photographers because of the great visibility and diversity of the seabed. You’ll also enjoy the different shapes and sizes of brain and boulder corals home to tons of angelfish and yellowtail snappers.

Gladden Spit

Gladden Spit

If you’re headed to Belize between April to June, stay in the city of  Placencia and swim with the whale sharks at Gladden Spit. These gentle giants come to Gladden Spit to feast on spawning fish populations. The marine life is thriving and colorful and you’ll see a lot more than a school of giant whale sharks.

Whale shark sightings are not guaranteed as they simply pass through the spot. However, if the season is right, many of the sharks feed near the surface and can be easily spotted by snorkelers.

Turneffe Reef Atoll

Turneffe Reef Atoll

At the northernmost part of all snorkeling sites is the  Turneffe Reef Atoll . It’s also the biggest of the three atolls that make Belize a snorkeling must-visit. Here you can easily spot turtles swimming near the shores of small mangrove islets. It was declared a marine reserve in 2012 and has since been a thriving home for lionfish, colorful corals, and different species of reef fish. It’s a full-day trip from Caye Caulker with lots to see and experience.

Glovers Reef Atoll

Glovers Reef Atoll

Another exciting destination is the  Glovers Reef Atoll . This remote atoll covers 145 square kilometers of reefs that drop up to 80 meters in depth. Snorkelers can take their pick from 700 patch reefs to explore. Waters are shallow and remarkably clear as well.  On the eastern edge of the atoll, the open sea of the Caribbean beings.

This results in a beautifully diverse marine life and a truly world-class snorkeling destination in Belize. There are several resorts and accommodations that offer activities such as kayaking and camping as well.

Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is tucked in the northern waters of Belize. It’s not as popular as Ambergris Caye, but Caye Caulker holds a magical underwater scene of its own. Because it’s less known, snorkeling here is more relaxed and there are fewer people scaring reef fish into hiding. It’s also a great spot if you want to visit several sites. Nearby is the popular  Coral Gardens  as well as a  manatee habitat . A trip to Caye Caulker also typically includes snorkeling stops to Goff’s Caye  and  Shark Ray Village .

World-class Snorkeling in Belize

You won’t run out of snorkeling sites in Belize. The list is only the tip of the iceberg because Belize is teeming with marine life and diverse land and waterscapes. Several of these snorkeling sites are also marine reserves so every snorkeling experience will definitely be more than worth the price of getting there.

Whether you follow this list or discover more awesome sites on your own, just make sure to bring your underwater camera and a whole lot of energy to make the most out of your trip.

The best part? At the end of the day, cap off your snorkeling adventure with a rum cocktail on the idyllic beaches of Belize.

For those looking for a break from snorkeling, checkout our Hol Chan Reserve & Shark Ray Alley adventures for a short 2.5 hours of travel and snorkel in all.

The resort’s most affordable half-day excursion takes guests to the Belize Barrier Reef’s north region near the Mexico Rocks and Tres Cocos.

The Pelican Reef sails off Caye Caulker for shopping and lunch, and then it’s off to Shark Ray Alley for some snorkeling, then back to your boutique resort, which some consider the best snorkeling resort in Belize.

Mahogany Bay Village

Mahogany Bay Village is Hilton owned, isolated on the tiny island of Ambergris—Belize’s largest island at 25 miles long and approximately 1-mile at its widest point. They offer exceptional accommodations and a myriad of activities and services.

Guests can contact the Concierge’s Desk when looking for something thrilling, low-key, or looking for a restaurant with local flair. The Concierge can also point you in the right direction for snorkeling excursions.

Many snorkeling adventures head out to the famous Shark Ray Alley to swim alongside nursing sharks, turtles, stingrays, and many other sea creatures. But you can also snorkel in the infamous Blue Hole of Belize —a unique opportunity to be taken by excursion or as an adventure accommodation package.

The Las Terrazas Resort is truly a luxury to behold, located in the town of San Pedro. The destination resort is only accessible by a two-hour ferry ride from Belize City or a 20-minute flight—take your pick. They offer five different room layouts, all with the comforts of home and lavish seaside amenities, specials, and adventures. While children are allowed, pets are not.

The resort partners with dive master’s that offer training and knowledge to guide you safely and privately no matter what snorkeling excursion you choose from:

  • Mexico Rocks
  • Sail and Snorkel Cye Caulker

Sapphire Beach Resort

Some consider the Sapphire Beach Resort the jewel of the Ambergris Caye, or perhaps an ideal location for one of the best snorkeling resorts in Belize.

Although guests of the Sapphire can not access or exit the barrier reef from the resort’s beaches due to ecologically protected seagrass that supplies the reef with oxygen, guests can make reservations with the resort’s front desk for any of the following six snorkeling reserves in Belize.

  • Basil Jones is a lagoon that has closed off much of the wildlife from the rest of the barrier reef that they’re not found elsewhere in the reef.
  • Punta Azul is quite literally the ocean’s arches, caused by the crashing waves and wind exposure that have cut away at the limestone to form the arches.
  • Tres Cocos is home to some of the strangest named fish, such as the parrotfish, porkfish, trumpet fish, squirrelfish, and harlequin bass.
  • The notorious Blue Hole of Lighthouse Reef Atoll
  • Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley
  • Mexico Rocks are known for their boulder-sized coral.

Shaka Caye All inclusive Resort

The Royal Palm Caye Resort situated on the remote island of Saint George’s Caye, Belize, is a distinct island of great adventures teeming with life above and below the water’s surface.

As far as world-renowned snorkeling goes, the Royal Palm Caye Resort Island delivers on one of the best snorkeling resorts in Belize, with water temperature hovering around balmy 80 degrees. Royal Caye Palm Resorts offers snorkeling adventures to Hol Chan Marine Reserve , Shark Ray Alley, Gallow’s Point, and Swallow Caye Reserve.

Tobacco Caye Resort

Tobacco Caye Paradise resort has over-water and beachfront cabanas. More like a Bed and Breakfast concept, the resort only has six cabanas and at this time doesn’t allow children.

The property is a full-time residence for this privately operated family-owned resort. Getting there requires a privately chartered boat ride just 30-minutes off-shore from Dangriga.

They offer four snorkel trips, and gear is not required. They also provide coursework in other underwater sports and package deals. Each snorkeling tour has a professional dive instructor from the local diving experts at Island Adventure Ltd., part of the Belize Adventure Group.

Roberts Grove Beach Resort

Robert’s Grove Beach Resort tops our best-snorkeling resorts for families—sorry, Rover will have to stay at home since the hotel doesn’t allow pets.

The beachfront resort is on the peninsula of Placencia, and you can get to the resort by one of Belize’s domestic airlines, Maya Air or Tropic Air.

The resort can arrange almost any adventure you seek, from fly fishing, sea kayaking, and, best of all, snorkeling.

The resort offers nine room layouts that sleep as little as three people or as many as six people. Room rates vary, but the price guarantee is an excellent way to earn business by honoring another hotel’s lower value.

The snorkeling adventures offered through the hotel start at a half-day and are suited for strong swimmers as young as five years of age.

Pool at Hamanasi Resort

The Hamanasi is an adults-only hotel and a 40-minute drive from Dangriga Airstrip via Maya Air as recommended by the Hamanasi resort. They are a family-friendly resort offering six different room layouts and locations throughout the resort property.

A majority of snorkeling is a 35-minute drive within the South Water Caye Marine Reserve. All trips are accommodating by a certified Belizean tour guide.

Most snorkeling locations are easy to navigate and traverse without disorientation. Guides are also capable of seeing to the bottom of the reef floor as an added protection.

Your Guide to Snorkeling near San Pedro, Belize

Headed to Central America with your mask and fins and looking for the best snorkeling in Belize? Keep on reading, as I spent some time underneath the waters in San Pedro testing out the nearby snorkel spots!

Ever dream of swimming with sharks without getting your leg bitten off? What about swimming throughout schools of fish and watching a sea turtle glide gracefully throughout the water? Does snorkeling with a sting ray tickle your fancy?! Care to swim alongside a manatee (!!!) anyone? Well, my H2O lovers, snorkeling in Belize will be riiiight up your alley.

And such, Belize is the place to be. This post has got just what you’re looking for – some of the best snorkeling in Belize, coming right up!

5 of the BEST spots to snorkel in Belize - all different wildlife! | www.apassionandapassport.com

With a 185-mile barrier reef (only second in size to Australia’s), the opportunity to see a vast array of sea life while snorkeling in Belize is pretty amazing. Pretty gosh-darn epic if you ask me. The options are basically endless when it comes to sticking your head below the surface.

Many tour operators will lend you a mask and snorkel, but I highly suggest you bring your own.   These have excellent reviews and come in a wide array of colors.

All around the island of Ambergris Caye there is an abundance of sea life and colorful corals just waiting to be explored. The water is turquoise in color, and the best Belize snorkel spots are easily accessible by both half or whole day tours. Diving is also an option, although requires a PADI license.

But Belize took me by surprise.  It was a whole different experience. (And thus, this list of the best snorkeling in Belize spots was born).

And if you’re wondering where to snorkel in San Pedro Belize, read on for lots of information!

Photography:

I get a lot of questions about what camera I use when snorkeling, and I currently use a GoPro Hero 4 and Nikon Coolpix AW120 ( updated version (with wifi) here ).  Refer to the end of this post for a few more snorkeling must-haves, or check out my travel store for even more personal recommendations. 🙂

Best Snorkeling in Belize: Top Spots

1. hol chan marine reserve.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is arguably one of the most impressive snorkeling spots in the entire world- and for good reason.  Therefore, the fact that it is considered the most popular snorkel site in Belize makes perfect sense.

Being so incredibly close to the town of San Pedro, just about 4 miles south (a short 15 minute boat ride), makes it easily accessible for a half day trip.  It was so easy (and downright impressive), that I came back the next day for some more underwater fun.

snorkeling san pedro belize

Hol Chan can actually be divided into four main zones or habitats: the coral reef, grass beds, mangroves, and shark-ray alley.  Within these zones, over 160 species of fish exist, as well as roughly 40 species of coral, 5 sponges, 8 algaes, and 2 seagrasses.  Oh, and 3 species of sea turtles >> my absolute favorite.

Occasionally, sightings of tarpon, Hammerhead sharks, and West Indian Manatee’s are reported.  Let me know if you are one of the lucky ones to swim alongside a Hammerhead Manatee.

2. Shark-Ray Alley

It’s no coincidence that the Sharks and Rays hang around one particular section of the reef.  In the past, local fisherman would often clean their catch in this area, thereby attracting Nurse Sharks and Southern Sting Rays.  When they noticed this, the fisherman notified the dive shops in San Pedro, which quickly made “Shark-Ray Alley” an extremely popular dive and snorkel site in Belize.

With excellent visibility, you can almost always see all species of fish (including jacks, groupers, snappers, parrot fish, angel fish, barracuda), but the main attraction will definitely be nurse sharks and sting rays for sure.

snorkeling san pedro belize

As soon as your boat arrives to the site, you will notice dark shadows nearby.   Hello sharks and rays!

Nurse sharks average four to six feet in length, while the rays have a “wing-span” of two to four feet.  With numerous boats in the area each and every day, these animals have a great tolerance for humans and seem to enjoy this interaction.  Many will even swim right up to snorkelers!  Although not harmful in any way, it is best to keep a safe distance and not touch the animals.

This is a must-stop for any snorkeler wishing for a unique underwater experience.

3. Mexico Rocks

Located off the far northern tip of Ambergris Caye in the Belizean Barrier Reef (just a 20 minute ride from San Pedro), Mexico Rocks is a popular snorkeling destination.

Here, you will have the chance to admire giant Brain Corals, as well as a large collection of Star, Elk Horn Coral, and Staghorn Coral, with juvenile fish scurrying about.  Colorful sea fans, azure vase sponges, and butterfly fish add life to the area as well.

snorkeling san pedro belize

The area is also known for conch, banded shrimp, arrow crab, flounders, yellow tail snappers, and an assortment of angelfish.  It is also possible to see spiny lobsters and sting rays here (which is why I’m dubbing it one of the best Belize snorkeling spots you can find).

The underwater visibility at Mexico Rocks is pretty perfect, and makes for an excellent half-day snorkel adventure.

4. Goff’s Caye

On our Manatee watch, our boat stopped at a pristine little island with beautiful, clear water.  Unfortunately, mother nature decided to do a little dance, and it downpoured for a majority of our tour.  However, once we ducked our heads below the surface, the rain didn’t matter one bit.  Thankfully, we were still able to snorkel off the Caye’s white sandy beaches among colorful coral and fish.

snorkeling san pedro belize

The snorkeling is great for those just getting used to the idea, although a professional is necessary to guide you to the right places around the small island.  The waters were rather shallow, which was great for my friends who have never snorkeled before.  After we held hands for a bit and she became comfortable, I was able to let go and explore on my own with the group (and take pictures)!

snorkeling san pedro belize

At Goff’s Caye, there is an abundance of brain coral, every color fish you could imagine, sting rays, barracudas, and small (harmless) sharks hanging around.

The island is particularly small, and there is nothing much but sand and palm trees. There is a dock that the boat tied up to, and a small shack selling food and drinks. On a bright and sunny day, I bet it’s absolutely surreal, an idyllic “deserted island”. Maybe next time… just gives me an excuse to go back 😉

5. Coral Gardens

After snorkeling four times in Belize in just a few days, I still wanted more. Crazy, right? The marine life was out of this world, so I signed up for yet another half-day tour, this time to explore the Coral Gardens. This spot, located between Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, is a patch of reef whose main attraction is the beautiful colorful corals.

The Best Places to Go Snorkeling in Belize

By Suzie Dundas

Last updated: May 9th, 2024

Snorkeling in Belize with stingrays

  • Find a Cruise

Belize may be one of the smallest countries in Central America , but it’s big on adventure. If you like water sports, you’re even more likely to fall in love with the country. Thanks to a few sizable barrier islands, the second-largest reef in the world, and fabulously clear water, there are dozens of locations that could contend for the title of the best snorkeling in Belize (or even the best snorkeling in all of Central America.)

Most people arrive in the country through Belize City. Fortunately, the capital is also the country’s primary port, and one of the best places to visit in Central America , so it’s easy to find whatever type of snorkel, dive, or boat tour you have in mind. Much of Belize’s best snorkeling is near Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker, and nearly all of the best sites are along the 600-mile-long Mesoamerican Reef. The reef’s numbers are quite staggering—nearly 500 species of fish and 50 species of coral call the reef home, as do sharks, rays, turtles, dolphins, and the rare West Indian manatee.

Belize has clear water, an incredibly healthy reef system, and plenty of locations to jump in the water with amazing wildlife. Here are some of the best places to go snorkeling in Belize, from protected reefs to sandy-bottom areas of the ocean perfect for making friends with a curious nurse shark or cute stingray.

Shark Ray Alley on Caye Caulker

Sharks swimming in Shark Ray Alley

Shark Ray Alley, Caye Caulker

Belize may be known for amazing jungle and ruins, but for snorkelers, it’s also known for the small islands off its coast. Caye Caulker (pronounced “Key” Caulker, like the Florida Keys) is home to some of the best snorkeling in Belize.

Caye Caulker doesn’t have many cars, but it has plenty of boats, so be sure to book a spot on one heading to Shark Ray Alley. The shallow snorkeling site is just a few minutes off the beach. As soon as your boat arrives, you’ll notice nurse sharks and stingrays approaching, attracted by the prospect of food from the boats.

When you step into the water, the curious creatures will start to swim up to you. They won’t let you touch them (nor should you), but since you’ll be floating just a few feet above them, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for amazing photos.

The Belize Barrier Reef

Colorful corals in Belize Barrier Reef

Belize Barrier Reef

The Belize Barrier Reef is the official name for the 200 or so miles of the longer Mesoamerican Reef that are within Belize. The entire Mesoamerican Reef is the second-largest reef in the world (just behind Australia’s Great Barrier Reef,) so as you might imagine, it’s home to some of the most beautiful snorkeling in Belize.

There are dozens of scuba and snorkel sites along the reef, and all offer the chance for amazing sights. Aside from substantial coral formations, you might see sea turtles, various rays, eels, jellyfish, goofy-looking cowfish, or even the elusive frogfish. The visibility on the reef is almost always excellent, so whether you snorkel or dive, you should have a wonderful view of the underwater world.

Remember that most sites along the Mesoamerican Reef require a boat ride to get there, meaning you’ll be in open water. If you’re not a strong swimmer, be sure to have a PDF and fins, and ask a guide to stay near you in the water.

Starfish Island (Bannister Caye)

White sand of Starfish Island with boat

Starfish Island

Starfish Island is a private island with more than 600 feet of sandy beach, plus amenities like bars, a restaurant, a kids play area, and several thatched-roof palapas for a bit of shade.

But the real draw here is the opportunity for fantastic snorkeling, both off the beach and on the way to the island. The trip to the island from Belize City is relatively quick, so most boats will make a stop or two along the way where you can strap on snorkel gear and jump in.

If you’ve never snorkeled before, you may want to practice in the gentle, shallow water just off of Starfish Island’s beach (and yes, you almost certainly will see starfish).

Hol Chan Marine Reserve

Fishes and corals in Hol Chan Marine Reserve

To take an all-day adventure to some of the best snorkeling in Belize,  book a trip from Belize City to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve near Ambergris Caye. The large marine park is divided into four sections, based on the underwater wildlife and terrain: the Cut (or Channel), the Sea Grass Beds, the Mangroves, and Shark Ray Alley (which isn’t the same Shark Ray Alley as the one by Caye Caulker.)

More than 160 species of fish live in the reserve, as do corals, sea turtles, and marine mammals like the protected West Indian manatee. Some of the easily recognized fish you’re likely to see are small yellow and blue damselfish, purple and orange royal grammas, trumpetfish, and various striped butterflyfish. If you keep an eye on the open water, rather than on the reefs, you could see smaller sharks like blacktips or nurse sharks, spotted eagle rays, or even a dolphin.

Goff’s Caye

Stretch of white sand in Goff’s Caye

Only about 30 minutes by boat from Belize City, Goff’s Caye is one of the best places for snorkeling in Belize that can be visited in a morning. The island has a sandy white beach and clear water, so it’s easy to snorkel right off the shore.

The small island is home to shorebirds like brown boobies, diving cormorants, and red-chested frigatebirds. Underwater, you’ll see dozens of fish and coral species, lobsters, conch, starfish, stingrays, or just about any other creature you’d find in the reef—most species have been spotted in this area. The reef here is exceptionally healthy, making it a great spot to see a large amount of wildlife in one location.

Mexico Rocks

If you’re not keen on getting close to sharks of any kind, consider booking a Belize snorkeling trip that heads to Mexico Rocks. The site is very popular for snorkeling, and since it’s near Ambergris Caye, it’s often paired with stops at Shark Ray Alley or the Hol Chan Marine Reserve. The reef separates Mexico Rocks from the ocean and blocks most waves, currents, and swells.

Mexico Rocks is a shallow site, with an average depth of around 12 to 15 feet, so it’s easy to see the creatures underneath. The coral formations here are massive, providing shelter for animals like spiny lobster, eels, anemones, and shrimp. Of course, that attracts fish, which in turn attract sea turtles. Because the water is shallow, the site rarely sees anything larger than a turtle, so you’re unlikely to see sharks (though harmless nurse sharks do occasionally make an appearance.)

Turneffe Atoll

Aerial view of Turneffe Atoll with clear blue water

Turneffe Atoll is one of the largest atolls, or circle-shaped islands, off the coast of Belize. This protected marine reserve is a popular spot for day-trippers since it only takes about 30 minutes to reach the island from Belize City .

Because the reef around Turneffe is enormous, there’s a chance of seeing nearly every type of marine creature here, including manatees. Since it’s illegal in Belize to swim with manatees in their protected habitats (like Swallow Caye), your best bet of getting in the water with the gentle mammals is to see them nearby in the wild. Whether you see manatees or not, the reef here is very lively, and the sites here are considered some of the best for snorkeling in Belize.

If you have any time to spend on Turneffe Atoll, take a few minutes to walk around the island. Because of the healthy fish population around the reef, many seabirds call the island home. There are also a few small lodges on the island where you can grab a cold drink while you click through your amazing underwater photos.

Island view of The Split

The Split on Caye Caulker doesn’t have a very exciting name—it’s just the channel that splits the north and south parts of the island—but it’s a different story once you look underwater. It’s also one of the few places where you can snorkel directly from the shore without taking a boat to a site. And it’s right next to the Lazy Lizard, the island’s most famous toes-in-the-sand bar.

At The Split, you can walk right into the water and see the underwater world at your leisure. This site is best on days with calm water, because fish can sometimes move too quickly through the channel when the water is moving fast. While the site isn’t as lively as a coral reef, it’s arguably the easiest place to snorkel since it requires no scheduling or pre-planning (beyond having a snorkel and mask handy.)

If there aren’t too many fish underwater, you can always head up to the bar and enjoy a fruity drink as you sit in the surf. Just be ready to throw your snorkel back on if you get a peek of something colorful moving through the water.

The Blue Hole

Dark blue water of The Blue Hole

The Great Blue Hole isn’t just the most famous site in Belize—it’s one of the most famous in the world. At more than 1,000 feet across and 400 feet deep, it’s the world’s largest underwater sinkhole. It’s also a deeper blue than the rest of the ocean, providing amazing views as you approach.

Famous diver and scientist Jacques Cousteau called it one of the five best scuba diving sites in the world. The reefs around the Blue Hole just before the drop off are teeming with life, probably because the Blue Hole and the atoll around it is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. At around 100 feet down, divers can usually see large fish and sharks like blacktips, hammerheads, or reef sharks. Snorkelers often see these creatures when they come to the shallower waters to feed on the smaller animals around the reef.

The Blue Hole is hard to do in just a day, as it’s a three-hour boat ride to get there from Caye Caulker, but it’s one of the world’s most impressive sights and well worth planning a return trip to Belize.
