Six things to know about light rail and commuter train safety:

1. STAND BACK

Observe the pavement markings. Stand back from the platform, behind the painted or raised markings. Trains overhang tracks. Never run or ride scooters, skateboards or bicycles in a station.

2. STAY OFF THE TRACKS

If you drop an item on the tracks, do not attempt to retrieve it. Notify transit personnel.

3. SEE TRACKS? THINK TRAIN ®

Remain alert for oncoming trains on station platforms and while driving or walking. Listen and watch for pedestrian and traffic signals.

4. BE AWARE OF HIGH VOLTAGE

Never walk next to or in between the rails. High voltage electrical power can run underground on a third rail or above trains.

5. CROSS LEGALLY AND SAFELY

Cross only at designated crossings. Observe signs, signals and pavement markings. Always look for a train.

6. WAIT, LOOK BOTH WAYS

Always expect a train. Trains are closer and faster than they appear. Multiple tracks may mean multiple trains. Look for additional trains on adjacent tracks.

The more alignment you have, the more autonomy you can grant. The one enables the other. —Stephen Bungay, author and strategy consultant

Agile Release Train

The Agile Release Train (ART) is a long-lived team of Agile teams that incrementally develops, delivers, and often operates one or more solutions in a value stream.

ARTs are teams of Agile Teams that align to a shared business and technology mission. Each is a virtual organization (typically 50 – 125 people) that plans, commits, develops, and deploys together. ARTs are organized around the enterprise’s significant  Development Value Streams and exist solely to realize the promise of that value by building and delivering  Solutions that benefit the Customer .

ARTs are cross-functional and have all the capabilities needed to define, build, validate, release, and, where applicable, operate solutions.

These capabilities allow the ART to deliver a  continuous flow of value , as shown in Figure 1.

ART Characteristics

Organized around value.

As virtual organizations, ARTs have all the people needed to define, deliver, and operate the solution, eliminating the functional silos that may exist, as shown in Figure 2.

In a “functional” organization, developers work with developers; testers collaborate with other testers; architects and systems engineers work with each other, and operations work by themselves. Although there are reasons why organizations have evolved this way, the structure slows the flow of value, as it must cross all the silos. The daily involvement of managers is necessary to move the work across silos. As a result, progress is slow, and handoffs and delays rule the day.

Instead, the ART applies systems thinking (SAFe Principle #2 ) and organizes around value (SAFe Principle #10 ) to build an optimized cross-functional organization. This facilitates the flow of value from ideation through deployment and release into operations, as Figure 3 illustrates.

Together, this fully cross-functional organization—whether physical (direct organizational reporting) or virtual (line of reporting is unchanged)—has everyone and everything it needs to define, deliver, and operate solutions. It is self-organizing and self-managing. This creates a far leaner organization, where traditional daily task and project management is no longer required. Value flows more quickly with less overhead.

To simplify the job of finding the optimum structure of ARTs within the organization and Agile teams within ARTs, SAFe recommends team topologies as described in the book Team Topologies [1]. SAFe recommends four ways to organize teams (Figure 4).

  • Stream-aligned teams  are end customer-aligned and are capable of performing all the steps needed to build end-to-end customer value.
  • Complicated subsystem teams are organized around critical solution subsystems. They focus on areas of high technical specialization, which limits the cognitive load on all the teams.
  • Platform teams  provide application services and APIs for stream-aligned teams to be able to leverage common platform services.
  • Enabling teams provides tools, services, and short-term expertise to other teams.

Further guidance on organizing Agile teams can be found in the extended guidance article Organizing Agile Teams and ARTs: Team Topologies at Scale .

Agile Teams Power the Train

ARTs include the Agile teams that define, build, and test features, as well as those that deploy, release, and operate the solution. SAFe Agile teams apply SAFe Scrum or SAFe Team Kanban or hybrids that suit their specific context. Each Agile team typically has ten or fewer dedicated individual contributors covering all the roles necessary to build a quality increment of value. Teams may be technology-focused—delivering software, hardware, and any combination—business-focused, or a combination of both. Each Agile team has two specialty roles, the Scrum Master / Team Coach and the Product Owner . And, of course, Agile teams within the ART are themselves cross-functional, as shown in Figure 5.

Aligned to a Common Cadence

ARTs also address one of the most common problems with traditional Agile development: teams working on the same solution operate independently and asynchronously. That makes it extremely difficult to routinely integrate the entire system. In other words, ‘The teams are iterating, but the system isn’t.’ This increases the risk of late discovery of issues and problems, as shown in Figure 6.

Instead, the ART applies cadence and synchronization to assure that the system is iterating as a whole (Figure 7).

Cadence and synchronization ensure the focus remains on the evolution and objective assessment of the full system rather than its elements. The System Demo , which occurs at the end of every Iteration , provides objective evidence that the system is iterating. As Figure 7 illustrates, a System Team is often formed as an enabling group to help with infrastructure development and full system integration and validation. Over time, however, many of the centralized services provided by the System Team can be automated or absorbed by the teams themselves.

Enabled by Critical Roles

In addition to the Agile teams, the following roles aid the successful execution of the ART:

  • Release Train Engineer (RTE) is a servant leader who facilitates ART execution, impediment removal, risk and dependency management, and continuous improvement.
  • Product Management is largely responsible for ‘what gets built,’ as defined by the Vision ,  Roadmap , and new  Features  in the  ART Backlog . They work with customers, teams, and Product Owners to understand and communicate their needs and participate in solution validation.
  • System Architect is an individual or team that defines the system’s overall architecture. They work at a level of abstraction above the teams and components and typically define Nonfunctional Requirements (NFRs) , major system elements, subsystems, and interfaces.
  • Business Owners  are key stakeholders of the ART, with final responsibility for the business outcomes of the train.
  • Customers are the ultimate economic buyers or value users of the solution.

In addition to these critical ART roles, the following functions play an essential part in ART success:

  • System Teams typically assist in building and maintaining development, continuous integration, and test environments.
  • Shared Services are specialists necessary for the success of an ART but cannot be dedicated to a specific train. They often include data security, information architects, site reliability engineering (SRE), database administrators (DBAs), and many more.

Key ART roles rely on support from the teams. For example, the RTE depends on Scrum Master / Team Coaches for help with aspects of ART operations and improvement. Product Management relies on Product Owners to turn their product vision into reality. Architects collaborate with technology professionals on teams to devise viable architectures.

ART Responsibilities

The ultimate purpose of every ART is to deliver effective solutions to the customer. Essentially, ARTs are built for the sole purpose of establishing a fast flow of solution features. To achieve that, a train develops the solution iteratively, constantly engaging with the customer and adjusting the course of action towards an optimal solution.

Figure 8 shows the critical areas of responsibility of an ART that help achieve that objective:

Connecting with the Customer

  • Apply customer centricity – An ART routinely focuses on customer needs and opportunities to benefit the customer. Customer Centricity is a necessary mindset for the ART and its constituent teams. The ART works to increase and maintain customer empathy and continuously research better ways to solve customer problems.
  • Use design thinking – A recurrent process of understanding the problem and designing the right solution— Design Thinking —enables an ART to create desirable, feasible, and sustainable solutions. Paying close attention to user personas, journey mapping, and customer benefit analysis helps an ART discover new, valuable product capabilities. The use of lightweight prototypes validates customer value hypotheses quickly and keeps the ART on the right track.

Planning the Work

  • Align ART priorities with portfolio strategy – Every ART operates in a broader portfolio context and needs to align with the overall portfolio strategy. Strategic Themes orient the ARTs within a portfolio towards a common goal. However, achieving the alignment also requires an established process that involves: 1) regularly engaging with portfolio stakeholders at the ART level and 2) including ART representatives in portfolio interactions. Organizing this communication and interaction is easier around PI cadence. Epic Owners often serve as an important link between portfolio strategy and ART execution.
  • Prepare for PI Planning – Stakeholders and teams need to prepare carefully for PI Planning . Product Management and Business Owners develop the vision and agree on priorities for the next PI: teams take inventory of their remaining work, their attainable capacity, and any new effort that may emerge in the local context.
  • Plan the PI – PI planning generates alignment within the ART. Teams create and agree on the PI Objectives that will guide them throughout the PI execution. Business Owners have an opportunity to share business and customer context with teams and, in turn, learn how the current technology and delivery capability can be employed to create optimal business value for the enterprise.

Delivering Value

  • Frequently integrate and test – A fast development rhythm requires frequent integration and testing. This helps uncover technology and implementation problems early and gives the teams enough time to respond to the findings. Without recurring integration and testing, an ART operates in excessive uncertainty and variability. Built-in Quality and Team and Technical Agility provide guidance on these practices.
  • Develop in short increments of value – An ART implements the PI as a series of short increments, each representing a small batch of integrated, tested, and demonstrable value. The ART’s iteration cadence provides a natural pace to create these increments. Each helps the ART learn about potential implementation challenges, get customer feedback, and agree on a decision point with possible course corrections for the rest of the PI.
  • Regularly synchronize and make adjustments – While executing the PI, an ART has multiple checkpoints in the form of an ART Sync, which includes a Coaches Sync and PO Sync (see the PI article for further description). These events increase visibility into the progress toward the current PI objectives and help the ART make timely adjustments.
  • Build a continuous delivery pipeline – An effective Agile development process provides the means for ongoing exploration and integration of work. Additionally, the teams need to establish a continuous deployment process via building a Continuous Delivery Pipeline (CDP). This requires value stream mapping to identify the sources of excessive delay and variability. As a part of CDP, Continuous Deployment often involves purposeful system design that favors low coupling of capabilities, which enables the teams to deploy value independent of each other.
  • Aligning releases with strategic goals
  • Validating releasable increments
  • Ensuring compliance with standards and regulations
  • Assessing customer impact
  • Maintaining the supporting assets and activities for releasing
  • Release frequently and continually optimize the process – Releasing frequently helps reduce time-to-market. Additionally, establishing successful continuous delivery and governance processes is only possible when the releases happen on a frequent, reliable basis. Over time, solution assets, architectures, and the infrastructure evolve and accumulate technical debt that may unexpectedly disrupt the release process. Releasing regularly helps uncover, mitigate, or even prevent those issues before they cause damage.

Getting Feedback

  • Involve the customer in the development process – There is no substitute for direct customer input. Including it in a routine development process helps an ART move at a much higher speed to avoid the costly mistake of building capabilities the customer doesn’t need or cannot use. Preparation for PI planning, the PI planning itself, and system demos provide venues for customer interaction.
  • Measure business outcomes and usage – Customer use of solutions may reveal issues and opportunities that otherwise might remain invisible to the ART. Creating the data capture and analytics capabilities, however, requires investment in the train’s capacity, a proactive approach, and the use of Architectural Runway . Additionally, an ART must measure whether delivered solutions enable the desired business outcomes—the ultimate purpose of the ART’s effort.
  • Perform routine A/B testing – Successful solution development is contingent upon an ART’s ability to navigate the unknowns and make effective decisions. A/B testing enables effective decision-making and improves the development speed of an ART. Instead of prematurely committing to certain functionality, the ART creates two or more options and validates them with users, thus gaining a real sense of which alternative is performing better.
  • Test User Experience – User Experience (UX) is essential to fully realizing the solution potential. But to provide productive UX, there needs to be an explicit, thorough UX design and testing strategy. As a part of this process, hypotheses are formulated, and then Minimum Marketable Features (MMF) are built and evaluated by observing the user in action, surveying them, or utilizing analytics. The SAFe Lean UX article covers additional topics of enabling effective UX.

Improving Relentlessly

  • Measure competency, flow, and outcomes – Every ART should regularly assess against key applicable competencies. ARTs also should routinely measure ART Flow and apply Flow Accelerators to initiate forward momentum for ongoing flow improvement. Additionally, ARTs use their Value Stream KPIs to measure the outcomes that underpin the desired customer and business benefits.
  • Inspect & Adapt at regular intervals – At every PI boundary, an ART has an opportunity to look back at the last PI, identify problems, and take corrective action during the Inspect & Adapt (I&A) event. This is the perfect time to identify significant, systemic improvement opportunities.
  • Make small improvements on the fly – Every ART routinely discovers small, local, and tactical improvement opportunities. In most cases, it is best to address these as they occur and without waiting for the next I&A. This achieves quick wins and preserves the I&A for issues that require more attention and the involvement of high-profile stakeholders.
  • Leverage Innovation & Planning Iteration – The IP Iteration offers an opportunity to allocate uninterrupted time to innovation and learning. This helps the ART to further advance its solution, technical infrastructure, and various processes.

Top Europe Train Safety Tips

Thomas Barwick/Getty Images

If you're going to be taking a train trip across Europe , you have no need to worry: they're just as safe as jumping on an Amtrak train at home. Make sure you pack your common sense and follow these five safety tips to ensure you have a wonderful trip!

Keep Your Backpack in Sight at All Times

Most important of all is to never leave your backpack on the train while you're outside of the car, and especially when it's stopped at a station. While thefts of luggage are rare, you never know if someone's been waiting for you to leave before they grab your backpack and make a run for it.

You obviously don't want to carry your backpack and daypack with you whenever you need to go to the bathroom, so the best thing to do is to keep all of your valuables in your daypack and only take that. Keep your passport, cash, laptop, camera, Kindle, and phone in your daypack at all times.

Finally, the best time to leave the car to get some food or use the restroom is while the train is moving. Wait until just after the train leaves a station before getting up. That way, if someone does try to take your backpack, they won't get very far with it before you realize what has happened.

Keeping Safe While Sleeping in Train Stations

If you've got an overnight wait between trains, you might want to sleep in a train station instead of heading out to a hotel. It makes a lot of sense: you save money, you don't have to leave and come back again, and if you only have a few hours to wait, you probably won't sleep much at your accommodation anyway.

If it's a large train station in a big European city, you shouldn't come across any problems. Be sure to use your backpack as a pillow and to sleep with your daypack on your front to deter any thieves. The more major the city, the more likely there'll be others settling in for the night, so bag a space nearby. There's safety in numbers, so it's worth doing this, even if it does make your night a little noisier.

Double Your Backpack Security

If you want to sleep on the train without fear of losing of your backpack, invest in a carabiner and use it to hook a bungee cord, string, belt -- whatever you want -- through a backpack strap and to an overhead rack or the leg of your chair. It's not as heavy as a padlock but will prevent thieves, as unhooking your backpack would draw too much attention to them.

Safety on the Night Train

Overnight trains might sound dangerous, but they're typically just as safe as traveling in the day.

If you're lucky, you'll be able to buy a ticket for a train with a sleeper carriage . You'll be able to sleep in a bed if that's the case, which makes for a more comfortable journey and a higher chance of you getting some sleep. With sleeper cars, put your backpack at one end of the bed and sleep with your feet on it. Remember, though, you'll be in a car with plenty of people, who are likely to wake up if anyone tries to do anything, so you don't need to worry much.

If you're less fortunate, you'll be taking a regular train overnight. In this case, you'll be sitting the whole way and unlikely to fall asleep. Wrap the strap of your daypack around your foot while you're sleeping upright to keep it by your side. Or you can do the carabiner trick mentioned above.

General Tips and Advice

Being safe while you travel is largely a matter of staying aware. Just because a part of town has narrow streets and few streetlights doesn't mean you should avoid it, for instance -- the coolest cafe in the world could be down there.

The key is research. Before you take a train, be sure to have a quick google around to see if anyone has anything to say about their experience on that particular route.

For the most part, though, traveling on European trains are extremely safe. Be sure to keep your eye on your bags at all time, aim to move around the train while it's moving rather than at the station, invest in a carabiner to secure your bag if you're worried, and if you don't have a reserved seat, choose a carriage with lots of other people there.

65 Beautiful Quotes to Wish Someone a Safe Journey

Know someone who is about to set off on holiday or go abroad? Here are 65 creative and thoughtful ways to say ‘Have a safe trip’. Copy and paste these safe journey wishes to show them that you care.

Saying goodbye to someone who’s about to depart on a journey can be difficult. Even as a writer, I often struggle to find the right words to say.

These days, I’m usually on the receiving end of goodbyes – but I’ve had to say my fair share of farewells, too.

While ‘Have a safe journey’ will sometimes suffice, quoting a simple message, a beautiful saying or even a traditional blessing is an easy way to make a farewell more meaningful and memorable.

I’ve searched books, song lyrics and inspirational sites to come up with this list of 65 safe journey wishes . You can say these out loud, or you can copy and paste your favourite into an email, use it in a caption on social media, or better still, jot it down on a hand-written note!

  • The best quotes about travelling with friends
  • The best quotes about travelling alone
  • The best quotes for travelling with family
  • Inspiring quotes about adventure & hiking
  • Beautiful sunset captions for social media

Tips for wishing someone a safe journey

Goodbyes are often emotional and can be overwhelming, especially when they take place at the airport or at the station. These tips can make saying farewell that much easier.

  • Don’t leave your goodbye until the last minute. If you want to make it meaningful, make sure you set aside enough time to say everything you want to say.
  • Focus on the next time you’ll meet. Whether it’s catching up for a meal or picking them up from the airport, make a plan and remind them (and yourself) that it’s only a matter of time before you see each other again.
  • Make a time to speak. If you know you’ll hear their voice when the flight lands or the train pulls in, you’ll feel much better about sending them off.
  • Remember, the person travelling is excited for the journey ahead – but they’re probably just as emotional as you!
  • Reassure them that you’ll be thinking of them. These safe journey wishes are perfect for just that.
  • It’s not only about what you say, it’s also what you do. Depending on your relationship, a warm hug or a hand on the shoulder can mean a lot.

Short and sweet safe journey wishes

These safe journey messages are thoughtful but to the point. They’re especially good for saying a quick goodbye on social media or by text message.

  • Best wishes for a safe, happy and fulfilling journey.
  • May the road be kind to you.
  • Go safe, move safe, leave safe, home safe.

A quote graphic.

This goodbye message comes from a Middle English phrase meaning ‘May you prosper’.

When NASA astronaut John Glenn made the first manned orbital flight in 1962, mission control used the word ‘Godspeed’ to wish him a safe journey.

  • Catch you on the flip side!

We often use this friendly way of saying goodbye in Australia. It comes from late-night radio DJs, who would use the phrase before they put on a vinyl record.

Listeners knew they wouldn’t hear from the DJ again until the record had played through and they had ‘flipped’ the vinyl to the B side.

  • Stay out of trouble!

A cheeky way of saying ‘Have a safe journey’, appropriate for someone you know well!

  • Smooth sailing!

First coined in the 14th Century, this phrase prophesied calm waters free from rough waves for someone who was about to set sail on the high seas.

It doesn’t just apply to water travel – nowadays, it can be used as a generic saying to wish someone a breezy journey.

  • “May the air be clear, your flight smooth, the plane ride safe, and the sky blue!” – Unknown
  • “May angels fly with you wherever you roam and guide you back safely to family and home.” – Traditional Irish blessing
  • “The more you weigh, the harder you are to kidnap. Stay safe. Eat cake!” – Unknown

A quote graphic.

  • “The world is waiting for you. Good Luck. Travel Safe. Go!” – Phil Keoghan (The Amazing Race)
  • “I don’t want you coming back empty-handed – I want you coming back with a head full of tall tales, absurdities, and little moments of beauty. Have a safe trip!” – Unknown

How to wish someone safe travels in a different language

Are you saying goodbye to someone who is travelling overseas? Why not wish them a safe journey in the local language of their destination.

  • Bon voyage! – French
  • Buon viaggio! – Italian
  • Gluckliche reise! – German
  • Viaje seguro! – Spanish
  • Boa viagem! – Portuguese

World’s best and golden words I’ve read here . I wanted to wish my crush and this site helped me a lot . Thank you very much.

Thank you for sharing 🙂

Just a little note on the Portuguese wishes, “Viagem segura” is grammatically correct but no one really says it that way, we say “Boa viagem”

Obrigado, Rita! I’ve just updated it 🙂

Amazing, these are cute wishes and I think best way to say good-bye to anyone in a beautiful way. Keep sharing good stuff!

Great page! Very inspiring. Very meaningful. Very informative.

Please note typo: Buon viaggion! – Italian should be Buon viaggio! (There is no letter n.)

Keep up the good work,

Whoops, fixed! Thanks for pointing out the typo.

Kindest, Emily

Your words are amazing!

10 Safety Precautions While Traveling By Train

Traveling by train is an exciting way to experience the scenery and learn more about local lives. It can also help you to save some money as well.

How to travel by train safely? Read here for ten safety train travel tips to minimize the risk of injury and theft.

safety train travel tips

Pack luggage carefully

Before traveling, you should pack your luggage neatly so you can carry and lift it easily. Sometimes the distance between the entrance and the train is quite far away, so it may be tiresome if you have heavy luggage.

Don’t forget to buy a key for your luggage.

If you’re going on a long journey on a train, buy sturdy straps to attach your bag to an elevated rack. This helps minimize the risk of baggage theft.

Read more : How to avoid theft when traveling .

Have a personal bag

Put all your valuables, including cash, tickets, passports, and credit cards, in a personal bag and carry it all the time.

Keep your train tickets and supplies you need to use in an accessible place.

Avoid changing trains at night.

If possible, avoid changing tourist trains at night. Please read up on the train stations you are about to visit in advance to see how often the train is late and how secure it is.

Do not search your luggage in the middle of the station for lost items. If you have to wait a few hours at the station, look for a relaxed and light place to sit, preferably near other travelers.

Keep your eyes on your belonging.

Even in the morning, you can still be a potential target for criminals at the train station. So, don’t take your eyes off your luggage and be alert to the people who approach you.

When waiting for a train, stand at the designated line and always keep your luggage. Avoid wearing luggage behind your back, as you could be pickpocketed if caught off guard.

Always lock your luggage and carry important things with you when you go to the toilet.

travel luggage

Never cross the tracks.

You must never cross the tracks to get to the train platform . Use the prescribed roads and stairs.

Board the train early.

You should board the train as soon as possible, placing your luggage in your sight. Also, make sure that you sit on the correct seat and carriage. If in doubt, ask again.

Listen to the announcement.

Listening for notices is a must!

Usually, the station staff will notify the change of the train arrival time through the speakers before displaying them on the bulletin board.

If everyone gets up and goes to another station, ask carefully and follow them.

Don’t trust strangers.

If you sleep in the same cabin with many strangers, lay your head on important luggage or wear it with you. Avoid accepting food or drinks from people you do not know.

When traveling between carriages, be careful when you cross.

How To travel safely in Indian trains: 13 Awesome tips

I was 12 years old when I traveled solo in the sleeper class of an Indian train. I was unattended by an adult on this overnight journey from Amravati to Mumbai. I can safely and happily say no untoward incident happened with me (a solo traveling girl child) in Indian railways.

If you are still wondering if it is safe to travel by train in India? My answer is, Yes, traveling by train in India even though risky at some levels, is safer if you travel in a reserved compartment. Staying cautious is the key. If you are a female traveling solo or with a child then try to get an upper berth where you are at a safe distance from the (unwanted) touch of passers-by.

Of course, there is much more to train travel in India than what I have just mentioned.

Now that I am a mother, I am not very sure if I will be as daring as my own parents and send my kids to travel solo in the train.

safe train journey images

I asked Amandeep Kaur (an avid traveler who loves train journeys and is also the author of this post) to give her tried and tested tips on safe traveling in Indian trains.

Here is what she says.

I have been traveling in trains in India since I was a child and I have been traveling solo for years now. I haven’t faced any major issue and have found it quite easy and safe to travel by train in India.

Train travel in India is crowded, often messy and loud, but a complete enriching experience in its own.

safe train journey images

Here are my tried & tested 13 awesome basic safety tips for traveling by train in India.

1. Wear suitable clothes

To be on the safer side, avoid expressing your personal fashion sense while traveling in train.

Dressing modestly in loose fitting clothes, keeping your shoulders and legs covered would minimize stares and unwanted attention that is common for foreigners and solo women travelers.

Preferably opt for something that local women wear so that it’s easy to blend in.

While choosing your train travel clothes, keep in mind the weather and class you are traveling in. During summers, Sleeper coaches (Non-AC) can get very hot.

During boarding or de-boarding a train, the crowd gets very pushy and too close for comfort.

safe train journey images

I would highly recommend clothes which cover your cleavage for personal comfort from unwanted stares and “not so accidental” touches.

Avoid wearing too much jewelry and other expensive accessories.

Though sheets and blankets are provided in AC coaches, for overnight journeys I always carry a cotton dupatta/stole with me so that I can cover myself up with something that I am sure is very clean and smells familiar and comforting.

Read more on How to Dress in India: the Ultimate Dos and Don’ts.

2. Safety on station

safe train journey images

When you reach the station, look for the display board that lists the train name, number with its arrival time and platform number. If in doubt about train arrival, platform number, etc, ask the officials at the enquiry counters or railway police or the shopkeepers at the platform.

Reach your platform well before time as Indian platforms tend to get very crowded with passengers, people who have come to bid farewell to the passengers, people who have come to receive the passengers, red uniformed porters and hawkers.

A common sight in India is people crossing the railway tracks to reach the platform on the other side. This is illegal and should not be done.

Use the foot over-bridge if you have to cross to the other side.

Don’t keep your belongings unattended anywhere.

Tickets are not usually checked at the station before you board the train.

You must have your ID card with you to show to the ticket examiner.

Enquiry counters, washrooms, waiting rooms and other facilities like chemist shop, book shop etc can be found easily on Platform 1 at most of the stations.

‘Women only’ waiting rooms are there at most of the stations.

The Good news is that the CRIS reservation system used by the Indian Railways uses an algorithm where a single woman traveling is always preferably given a seat where there’s a family or other women near her compartment.

3. Travel Light

All stations are not equipped with lifts and escalators. These are installed only at major stations. So, it’s advisable to travel light.

If you need the services of Porter/Sahayak (commonly known as Coolie) for carrying your luggage, you will find them on the platforms wearing the quintessential red-shirt, a copper-badge on their arms. They charge a fee according to the weight of the luggage. The going rate is Rs.100 per luggage.

Trivia: ‘Coolie’ is a colonial-era racist term. Now called as Sahayaks, they don’t mind being called a coolie. Perhaps it makes them feel like megastar Amitabh Bachchan whose movie ‘Coolie’ was a blockbuster.

Keep your money, cards, ID proofs, phone and other important documents in a separate bag/pouch and keep it close to you all the time.

Don’t keep all your money in one place. Keep a separate change of money with you that you might need in order to use washrooms at the stations or to buy something.

PRO-TIP FOR TRAIN TRAVEL: I always travel with only one backpack so that even if I need to use the washroom at such places, I can carry it inside with me.

Don’t forget to pack your First Aid kit. This post by a wanderlust doctor will give you a good insight into what you need to pack.

4. Know your train and seat

safe train journey images

Usually, there are many display boards at the platform displaying the train number and coach number due to arrive at the designated place on the platform.

Look for the board displaying your coach number and wait at that place.

Sometimes, getting on or off the train may seem like a hassle due to the crowd as there is no queue to board the train. Just stand your ground, push a little if you have to and find your way.

As soon as you board, find your seat, place your luggage under your seat or nearby and settle down.

Also, look around for emergency exit so that in case of an emergency you know where to go.

You may sometimes find someone else occupying your seat, tell the person politely that you have a reservation for it. In all probability, the person would leave.

You may be approached by people wanting to exchange seats, do it only if you think there is a good enough reason and your comfort is not compromised.

Know your AM and PM – Once while traveling by train, I witnessed an incident, where two persons were arguing for a berth, both claimed to have a reservation for it. Later on, it came to light that one man had booked the train for the wrong date as it starts late at night around 12.30 a.m. The ticket he had purchased was for the previous date, the day that had just ended.

5. Stay connected

Always keep your phone and power bank charged. Indian train compartments have common power points for phones.

Use your phone to stay updated about the train schedule during the journey as stations are not announced in trains, unlike many other countries.

Once while traveling, I lost my phone and never got it back. Since then, I keep a diary with me where I note down all the emergency numbers and contacts of people I may need to contact.

Keep a friend or family member updated about your journey and schedule etc so that if you don’t reach a place on time, they can raise alarm.

6. Railway staff/ attendant

After settling in my seat, I look for train attendant so that I know in case of an emergency, complaint, etc, whom to contact.

Sometimes sheets/blankets are already placed on your berths and sometimes you have to ask the attendant for it so it’s good to know the person responsible for it.

They usually have a seat near the washroom so in case you are a woman traveling alone, you know if it’s a staff or a random person hanging around.

While traveling at night, I make it a point to use the washroom before the other passengers finally retire to sleep as most of the lights are shut out at night.

It is not compulsory to tip the train attendant. However, many people tip anywhere between Rs.20 to Rs.50. Read more about tipping in India in this post .

7. Stay aware and appear confident

Don’t get too lost in your devices that you are unaware of what is happening around.

Even if you are a woman traveling alone for the first time in a train in India, appear confident. It’s not as scary as you may have heard. Don’t let this fear stop you from experiencing the real India.

8. Food and drinks

Most of the long route trains have pantry cars where food is cooked and served to the passengers after you place an order to the attendant.

You have to pay for the food you order.

Food is already included in the train fare for Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto trains.

Many trains don’t have panty cars. While traveling in such trains, you can buy eatables from the vendors at the stations during the journey.

There’s a lot to choose from depending upon the area you are in. You can get pakoras, samosa, idli, bhajiya, kulcha, poori-sabji, wafers, biscuits, cold drinks etc.

There are many options to order food online during your journey and it gets delivered on your seat in train such as railmitra.com, railyatri.in, railrestro.com, ecatering.irctc.co.in at the stations covered by these.

Through these websites or their apps, entering your PNR/ journey details you choose your meals, place order, pay online or cash on delivery and have your meals delivered on your seat.

Dominos has started delivering pizza at some stations.

Avoid taking any eatables from strangers.

I prefer to carry home-cooked food and water bottle with me.

9. Conversations

safe train journey images

In case you feel like striking a conversation with co-passengers, limit it to general topics and don’t disclose personal information that may put you in an uncomfortable situation.

If you like your privacy, it’s better to have a book with you to read or pretend to be busy with something all the time. A headphone is super helpful to avoid unwanted conversations.

Sometimes people initiate conversations even if you are not interested.

If I do not feel like interacting with someone, I just reply in one word. If the person still doesn’t get the hint then I make a phone call to some friend that I haven’t talked to for long.

If you are a female foreigner traveling solo, I would suggest you avoid conversations with men traveling without any female companion or family, unless you are yourself ok with striking a conversation.

It’s not that men traveling without female companions are a threat to your safety, it’s just that there are high chances of you getting unsolicited attention for the whole journey.

10. Avoid travelling during major festivals

Plan your journey in such a way that you don’t have to travel on major festivals of that place.

Trains get way too overcrowded and it gets difficult to even board the train.

It has happened to me once while traveling to Roorkee (Haridwar) from Patiala. When the train arrived, it was full already and the platform was so crowded that I was unable to board the train despite having a reservation.

People, especially men were pushing to board the train and I didn’t feel like risking my safety.

If you have to travel during such period, travel only by AC Class.

11. Be aware of the rules of railway

Smoking and consuming alcohol is not allowed inside trains and neither on the railway station.

Do not carry inflammable articles with you while traveling.

Littering the stations is also an offence.

Traveling standing on the footsteps/door of the train coach is an offense. You may still find some people doing all these things despite the rules.

12. Avoid getting down the train in between stations

safe train journey images

Sometimes trains stop midway (where there is no scheduled halt) to let other trains pass.

It may also stop for more than the scheduled time at a particular station.

Stay inside the train and avoid getting out just to stroll.

13. Prevention of sexual harassment in trains

Many incidents of sexual harassment in trains have been coming into light. It is a serious punishable offense.

Railways and government are taking preventive measures for this and to make train journey safe for female passengers.

If you face any such situation, you don’t need to stop the train to visit a police station for registering your complaint, you can approach train ticket examiner or railway police personnel on duty in the train.

There is also a helpline number for safety during train travel. You can contact 182 (all India security helpline number) for safety issue during your journey. Click here for detailed information about all railway helpline numbers .

14. Female travelers should opt for Upper Berth

In addition to all the safety tips mentioned above, women traveling solo or with other females in groups should opt for upper berths or berths together in a cabin/coach while booking the tickets.

I don’t prefer side upper or side lower seats because that’s right next to the passageway.

15. Metros & local Trains

safe train journey images

The Metro railway system and service are operational in 12 cities in India. These are Delhi, Gurgaon(Haryana), Noida (UP), Lucknow (UP) Kolkata(WB), Chennai(TN), Bangalore(Karnataka), Mumbai(Maharashtra), Nagpur (Maharashtra) Jaipur (Rajasthan), Kochi(Kerala), Hyderabad(AP) and Ahmedabad (Gujarat). The Kolkata Metro rail is the oldest metro service in the country.

While traveling in local trains (Mumbai) or metro trains, use compartments designated for women only, especially during rush hours.

I have met many amazing people while traveling by train.

During my recent train journey from Udaipur to Jaipur, I met a Belgian couple who were traveling in India. The girl wanted to have a gemstone called ‘watermelon tourmaline’ for her wedding ring. It is a stone having shades of watermelon and that’s why it is called so.

Their search for the same had brought them to Jaipur.

Our conversation mainly revolved around travel and Indian culture. They both were surprised to know that many Indians were fluent in English and many Indian women were choosing to travel solo.

Most educated Indians are bilingual. Amongst the urban elite though, there is a disdain for regional languages. That’s unfortunate. Amish Tripathi

Demi Moore on Full Frontal Nudity With Margaret Qualley in ‘The Substance’: ‘A Very Vulnerable Experience’ but I Had a ‘Great Partner Who I Felt Very Safe With’

CANNES, FRANCE - MAY 19: Demi Moore and her dog Pilaf attend a photocall at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival at the Carlton Cannes Hotel on May 19, 2024 in Cannes, France. (Photo by Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images)

Demi Moore ‘s new film, the feminist body horror “ The Substance ,” sees her bare it all, with several scenes featuring full nudity. At the Cannes Film Festival press conference for the film on Monday, the 61-year-old actor discussed the “vulnerable experience.”

“Going into it, it was really spelled out — the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story,” Moore said. “And it was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish.”

We obviously were quite close  — naked — and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were,” she said. “But ultimately. it’s just about really directing your communication and mutual trust.”

As the film progresses, Moore becomes horribly disfigured thanks to the abuse her other half Qualley is inflicting on her. By the film’s last act, she quite resembles Anjelica Huston from the 1990 film “The Witches,” after she transforms into a humpback abomination.

Dennis Quaid also stars in the film as an “asshole,” as he described his character during the presser. The late Ray Liotta was meant to have the role before his passing in May 2022, and Quaid dedicated his performance to him.

“In my heart, I dedicated this role to Ray Liotta, who was set to play it,” Quaid said. “It was this week, two years ago that he passed, so I’d like to remember him. He was such an incredible actor.”

Cannes went wild for “The Substance” at its premiere on Sunday night, giving the film an 11-minute standing ovation , the longest of the fest so far.

In an interview with Variety , the French director discussed the film’s feminist themes, saying that body horror is “the perfect vehicle to express the violence all these women’s issues are about.”

With an undercurrent of #MeToo at this year’s festival as the movement grows in France, Fargeat hopes the film will shine even more light on the issue. “It’s a little stone in the huge wall we still have to build regarding this issue, and to be honest, I hope my film will also be one of the stones of that wall. That’s really what I intended to do with it.”

Engineers develop train that runs on human waste: 'A comfortable, modern, reliable and safe alternative to traveling by car'

A novel alternative to dirty fuel could soon be used to power trains in the United Kingdom, but the energy source for this potential technology can also be described as, well, dirty.

Biofuel created from sewage, animal waste, and farming crop residue is propelling carriages from Ultra Light Rail Partners, which secured a £60,000 (about $76,850) grant from the country's government in 2020.

As The Independent reported , some 120 passengers can travel in the BioUltra train, which will run on existing lines that are set to be reopened.

Would you want a high-speed railway in your state?

Critics of biofuel observe that it still has the potential to release planet-warming gases into the atmosphere. But since this waste is being produced anyway, supporters say it is just repurposing something that already exists rather than mining or drilling for dirty energy sources and causing environmental damage.

A prototype train was tested in July 2020, and the intention is to replace existing trams and city trains with the technology.

"This really is a vote of confidence in our business which is fully focused on providing lightweight affordable railcar travel as a comfortable, modern, reliable and safe alternative to travelling by car," chair of Ultra Light Rail Partners Beverley Nielsen said in a 2020 statement .

"We want to be able to offer this option to larger towns and smaller cities around the UK so they can realistically take polluting vehicles out of their city and town centres improving quality of life for all."

Nielsen also cited data that says reducing particulate matter pollution — produced from the exhaust pipes of dirty-fuel-powered cars — by 50% could prevent 925 deaths a year in the West Midlands region, which is one area where the BioUltra train might be rolled out.

A February 2023 study published by the JAMA Network revealed people exposed to 12 micrograms of fine particle pollution per cubic meter of air have an increased risk of heart attack and are 16% more likely to die from heart disease than those exposed to less than eight micrograms.

Trains are typically better for the environment than cars, anyway. According to data from the UK government, shared by Our World In Data , national rail and trams produce 35 grams (1.2 ounces) and 29 grams (one ounce) of carbon dioxide per kilometer (0.6 miles), respectively, while a car running on petrol produces 171 grams (six ounces) per kilometer.

When it comes to short-haul transportation , trains and trams would be a far better way to travel to avoid the production of planet-warming pollution and particulate matter. If these carriages run on biofuel rather than diesel, the benefits could be even greater.

Can I Opt Out of Meta’s A.I. Scraping on Instagram and Facebook? Sort Of.

Social media users voiced worries about a move by Meta to use information from public Instagram and Facebook posts to train its A.I. But the scraping has already begun. Here’s what to know.

  • Share full article

A screen with a rainbow circle and the words “Meta AI” with a blue check mark. There is a mute option and a prompt to learn more about AI training.

By Jesus Jiménez

Last month, Meta announced that it was going to expand its artificial intelligence services around the world, and the company let users in Europe know that it would use their public information to train its A.I. services starting on June 26.

The notifications sent to users of Facebook and Instagram in Europe, letting them know that their public posts could be used to train the A.I. services, including Meta’s chatbot, prompted privacy concerns and backlash as users wondered where the policy change would next be in effect.

But for those living in the United States, where online privacy laws are not as strict, Meta A.I. has already been using public posts to train its A.I. It’s unclear where else Meta might expand the program.

Privacy watchdogs have raised concerns about the data usage, and a lack of specifics about what Meta will do with people’s information. But Meta says it is complying with privacy laws, and that the information it is gathering will make services more relevant to the users in a given region.

Here’s what to know about Meta’s A.I. chatbot and how you can opt out of sharing your information.

Meta’s chatbot is its answer to ChatGPT.

Meta A.I. is a smart assistant software powered by artificial intelligence, available on apps including Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram — it can be used in feeds, chat and search. Similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Apple’s Siri or Amazon’s Alexa, it is designed to respond to almost any prompt a user gives it.

For example, you might ask: Who’s the greatest tennis player of all time?

“The eternal debate!” Meta A.I. responded to that query. “While opinions may vary, many experts and fans consider Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic to be among the greatest tennis players of all time.”

Meta A.I. is powered by LLaMA 3, the company’s new and powerful large language model, an A.I. technology that can conduct conversations and create images.

The chatbot learns from Instagram and Facebook posts.

The announcement to European users sparked some backlash on Reddit, Tiktok and Twitter, including in the U.S., where Meta was not required to notify users — and therefore users may not have realized — that it had been training its A.I. with their public posts.

When asked, the smart assistant said it learned from “a massive data set of text” online. The information came from web pages, books, articles and research papers. But some of the data set also came from social media posts — including Facebook and Instagram posts, Meta A.I. said, adding that its training came from “anonymized and aggregated” data.

On a page about its generative A.I. features , Meta said photos and text from public posts on Instagram and Facebook were used to train its generative A.I. models, but that private posts and private messages were not used. Users’ prompts for the A.I. features are also fair game.

A spokesperson for Meta — and its chatbot — did not specify exactly how the public information was being used other than to “build and improve A.I. experiences.” It is not clear when Meta began to scrape data from users based in the U.S.

In the U.S., opt out by setting your account to private.

For Meta users in the U.S., there isn’t a way to stop Meta A.I. from learning from your public social media posts, as there are no privacy laws specific to this.

“While we don’t currently have an opt-out feature, we’ve built in-platform tools that allow people to delete their personal information from chats with Meta A.I. across our apps,” Meta said in a statement on Friday.

Those using Meta apps within the European Union, Britain, the European Economic Area and Switzerland were notified that they could opt out, according to Meta.

Here’s how to opt out (for those in Europe).

Visit the Meta Privacy Center from your Facebook account, click on “data settings” and then click “off-Facebook activity.” Then select “manage your data” and turn off “data sharing,” as well as “A.I. model training.”

In E.U. countries, users will also see “G.D.P.R. settings.” From there, users can click on “exercise my rights,” and submit a request to opt out. Users also must give a reason for opting out.

On Instagram, users can tap on “settings,” then “about,” and then “privacy policy,” which will lead to information on Meta A.I. and how to opt out.

Is it legal for Meta A.I. to use my data?

In Facebook’s legal terms , that company says that “if you share a photo on Facebook, you give us permission to store, copy, and share it with others.” Depending on your settings, that photo can be used for other Meta products, according to the company.

In Europe, even with the opt-out feature Meta introduced to comply with privacy laws, watchdog groups have raised concerns about the sweeping nature of the data usage.

The European Center for Digital Rights, known as NOYB (None of Your Business), filed complaints in several European countries about Meta’s policy change.

“Meta doesn’t say what it will use the data for, so it could either be a simple chatbot, extremely aggressive personalized advertising or even a killer drone,” Max Schrems, the chairman and founder of NOYB, said in a news release.
