The Complete Guide to Savandurga Trek

The Savandurga trek follows a trail to the top of Asia’s largest monolith hill.

Located 60 km away from Bengaluru in the Savandurga state forest, this trail is famous for its challenging climb and amazing views of Magadi, Manchabele, and Thippagondanahalli reservoirs and the Arkavathi river.

“Karigudda” (black hill) and “Biligudda” (white hill) make the Savandurga hill cluster.

Savandurga Fort was the secondary capital of the Magadi rulers such as Kempegowda, and from 1638 to 1728, it was occupied by Dalavayi Devaraja of Mysore.

It is also called 'Savinadurga' or the Fort of Death because of the steep incline and defense structure.

Savandurga has two temples at the base. Savandi Veerabhadraswamy temple and Sree Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple. They attract devotees from many parts of Karnataka.

These temples date back to 1340 AD and are believed to have been built by the Hoysala rulers.

Savandurga Hill is off Magadi Road and is easily accessible via buses, cars, or two-wheelers.

Most Spectacular Sunrise

You can start the trek early in the morning at 5am to view one of the most spectacular sunrise. If you are lucky, you will witness the sun rising in between a sea of clouds.

The Savandurga trek can be completed by following two separate trails - “Karigudda” (Black hill) and “Biligudda” (White hill). Only Biligudda trail is accessible to general public as it is not permitted by the Forest Department to trek through the Karigudda trail.

The Biligudda trail originates near the Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple which is approximately 60 kms from Bengaluru city.

Section I: Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple to Rocky Section

Trek Distance: 260 metres Trek Duration: 10-15 minutes GPS coordinates of Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple: 12°54'58.2"n 77°17'53.6"e GPS coordinates of Rocky Section: 12°55'07.8"n 77°17'59.6"e

The Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple located at the base of the monolith hill or Savandurga hill is a bustling temple teeming with devotees. The trail towards the summit begins behind the temple and in the South East direction.

There is a pavement which leads to the trail (it is an approximately 200-300 metre walk). The route is relatively easy to find as tourists and trekkers will be seen walking on the trail.

The initial trail follows a mud path through some foliage. This section is a light ascent till you reach the base of the hill.

The rocky section or the base of the hill marks the end of the first section. It should take you approximately 10 to 15 minutes to reach the base of the hill.

Section II: Rocky Section to Fort Wall I

Trek Distance: 370 metres Trek Duration: 20-25 minutes GPS coordinates of Rocky section: 12°55'07.8"n, 77°17'59.6"e GPS coordinates of Fort Wall I: 12°55'15.58"n, 77°17'54.33"e

The second section begins as you step onto the hill and start walking up towards the summit.

| Tip: It’s recommended to start this section early in the day as once the sun gets overhead, the rock heats up and it can become quite challenging to walk in the heat, especially during the summer months.

As you start walking up the rock, you’ll get to see a lot more greenery and glimpses of the Manchanabele reservoir. This section is a little steep and does require trekkers to be in good shape. It is a good 400-500 metre ascent and should take at-least 20-25 minutes if you’re walking at a good pace.

The trail is not very easy to spot, so be on the lookout for markings on the rocks and boulders to ensure you are on the right track.

Once you reach the ancient fort wall, you’ve completed the second section of the trek.

Tip: Follow the electric lines/lighting poles. They act as a route/trail guide on the trek till you reach the muddy trails on the top.

This is a great place to take a break and catch your breath and obviously turn around and enjoy the lush green expanse below.

Section III: Fort Wall I to Nandi Temple (Summit) via Fort Wall II

Trek distance: 1.36 km Trek duration: 80-90 minutes GPS coordinates of fort wall i: 12°55'15.58"n, 77°17'54.33"e GPS coordinates of fort wall ii: 12°55'27.20"n, 77°17'50.17"e GPS coordinates of Nandi temple: 12°55'10.07"n, 77°17'31.72"e

From here the trail becomes a lot more steeper. It is at-least an hour long walk up to the second fort wall.

Sneha Yadav, our Social Media Manage/former Experrience Coodrinator at Indiahikes says:

"There are footprint-like inscriptions in the rock itself which can be used to walk up the hill ".

These indentations in the rock were probably carved in from the time of Dalavayi Devaraja or before and they are extremely useful in case the trekker is experiencing fatigue or is unable to find a strong grip on the rock.

These steps are extremely useful when you’re down as the gradient is quite steep. Picture by Bhajish

As the trail is primarily on granite rock, the shoes you wear should have a really good trip. It’s also important for the shoes to be flexible, which is why we recommend wearing running or walking shoes with good grip over the more rigid trekking shoes (which are generally preferred for the Himalayan treks).

Suhas Saya, Head of the Documentation and Experience Coordinators team at Indiahikes says:

" I prefer walking up this trek barefoot as it gives me the maximum grip, but I definitely won’t recommend that during the summer months as the rock radiates a lot of heat and there are chances of bruising your soles. "

In this section, you will also get to see a lot of ponds (not actually ponds but rainwater which has accumulated in the depressions of the hill). And a few tanks which were probably used to store rain water by those occupying the fort.

A few minutes after you reach the second fort wall, you get a respite from the rocky trail. The trail flattens out as you proceed towards the forest section.

The trail now transitions into a rocky cave structure and then into a muddy trail right until you reach the top. However, you’ll enjoy this section as it is a lot less taxing on your calves and there is a certain buzz to walking through caves, trees and roots.

This part is a little tricky as the trail is uneven and in case you miss the markings, you might get off the trail. Also, there are parts where you’ll have to hop and climb over boulders, which does require a good grip.

Once you are across the boulder farm (the point where you hop and jump over boulders), you soon reach the top. Now all you have to do is walk towards the Nandi temple and breathe in the wonderful view.

This marks the beginning of the easy section of the trek. It’s a relatively straight walk towards the temple. It should take you around 10-15 minutes maximum to reach the temple and the end of the trail.

The entire journey from the Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple to the Nandi temple should take around 2 to 3 hours maximum.

The journey is extremely rewarding as the view from the top is spectacular. You can see the lush green forests and parts of the Manchanabele and Thippagondanahalli reservoirs and in the horizon glimpses of the villages of Ramanagara and Magadi.

Make sure to spend at least 30 mins on the top, taking in 360° view of the surrounding hills and reflecting on your journey till the top and do not forget to have your packed lunch or snack!

Try to be quiet and close your eyes for five minutes. Observe the sounds of nature and feel your body getting comfortable and relaxed, preparing itself to descend down the same way you came up. It is a beautiful way to spend time at the summit.

The most challenging aspect of this trek is the descent. Since the hill is steep and is made of a single rock, walking down requires patience and awareness. Slipping and falling while descending can lead to serious injury, therefore it is important for trekkers to walk down slowly and carefully.

Use the indentations in the rock to assist you while going down in case your shoes are slipping.

The journey back down will take you about 2 hours from the summit.

It is also important to mix it up while walking downhill to ensure you don’t over-stress your muscles. Take shorter strides and longer strides, up on your toes and down on back on your heels, whatever it takes to minimize muscle tension in particular areas. Also we advise you to take short hydration breaks especially during the summer months.

In the monsoons, you have to be extra careful as the water will be running down the slopes, leading to extremely slippery slopes.

Best Time To Do The Savandurga Trek

The best season or time to do the Savandurga Trek would be between the end of September to February .

During the summer season, the rocks radiate a lot of heat which becomes unbearable on the trail. Slippery rocks in monsoons make it difficult to grip the surface and this becomes dangerous on the steep sections which demand a really good grip. Hence, we do not recommend doing this trek in summer and peak monsoon months .

• Reaching Savandurga By Your Vehicle From Bangalore

Savandurga is in the town of Magadi. The journey is a scenic one that takes you through the lush green countryside.

If you are planning on reaching Savandurga using your own vehicle, use this link to help set up navigation in Google Maps.

If you do not have access to Google maps, here is how to reach Savandurga:

There are two routes you can take to reach Savandurga from Bangalore.

1. From Mysore Road, take the right turn at the signal towards Dodda Aladamara Road just after Decathlon on your left and Rajarajeshwari Dental College on your right.

A visit to Dodda Aladamara (Big Banyan Tree) is a must, either before or after your trek. The Banyan Tree here is over 400 years old and it makes you marvel at the gigantic structure of the tree.

In about 16 kilometres, after crossing Manchanbele Bridge , take a right on to Savandurga-Manchalabele Road .

After 4 kilometres, take a right on to Savandurga Road .

This route is 50 kilometres long, but not that scenic compared to the other one.

2. Take the Outer Ring Road from Nayandahalli and turn right on to Magadi Main Road at the T-junction.

Continue on Magadi Main Road for 40 kilometres and take a right turn at the junction on to Magadi-Ramanagara Road. In about 8 kilometres, turn left on to Savandurga Road .

The route is almost 63 kilometres long, but it is worth it! You will not get to see the rural and greenet side of Bangalore if you are taking the first option.

• Reaching Savandurga By Public Transport System

From the Bangalore, the most convenient way to reach Savandurga is as follows:

1. Majestic Bus Stop ---> Magadi ---> Shared Auto or Bus to Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple

Shared autos are available every 15 minutes and costs Rs.20 per person. It is a reliable and fun way to travel with the locals as many visit the temple everyday.

Buses are available every 30 minutes and costs Rs.15 per person.

Difficult Sections On Savandurga

There are no sections on the Savandurga trek that can be classified as difficult as such. However, a trekker must always anticipate and prepare for every eventuality. The trail is extremely slippery during monsoons.

Here are a few things you should keep an eye out for:

1. Slippery Slopes (Monsoon Specific):

As the trek is predominantly on granite rock with very little vegetation and soil, in the monsoons, the trail can become extremely slippery. As the water runs off the slopes of the hill, trekkers can easily lose footing, which can lead to serious injury. If trekking in the monsoons, trekkers should be very careful with their choice of footwear and should check weather charts so as to avoid days with anticipated heavy rains.

2. Rocks and Boulders:

There are multiple parts of the trek where trekkers will be required to scale small boulders or walk between large rocks. While this is an extremely enjoyable part of the trek, one needs to be careful. Slipping or falling from a boulder can lead to serious injury and trekkers must exercise caution while navigating these sections.

3. Descent:

The Savandurga trail is known to be an easy to moderate one. This is because of the skill required while descending. Since the trail is primarily on steep granite rock, one can easily lose their grip and slip while descending. The descent is quite challenging and for this very reason we recommend trekkers to descend slowly one step at a time. While descending do enjoy the beautiful view, but also keep an eye on the trail so as to avoid injuries!

How To Get Fit For Savandurga Trek

The Savandurga trek is classified as an Easy-Moderate grade trek . From Sri Savandi Veerabhadra Swamy Temple at 2,736 feet, you will gain approximately 1,286 feet in altitude. Though the altitude gain is not much, the continuous ascent can be quite demanding for people who lead a sedentary lifestyle.

Training yourself for a low-altitude Easy-Moderate grade trek.

Here’s a guide to help you get fit for the trek in 4 weeks.

➤ Cardiovascular endurance

In case you’re just starting with a fitness routine, start slow and increase your pace everyday in the following manner –

  • Target completing a brisk walk of 5 km in 45 minutes when you begin.
  • Gradually increase your pace by walking 5 km, 4 times a week.
  • As you become more comfortable, introduce jogging in your routine.
  • Progressively increase the distance you jog in a workout until you can complete 5 km in 40 mins.

If you prefer cycling over running, target covering 15 km in 60 minutes when you begin.

  • Progressively increase your pace to cover 18 km in one hour.

➤  Strength training

This is an important area you need to work on.

Strength training is equally important to trek comfortably. Work on your glutes, calves and knees. Additionally, work on strengthening your core.

You must strengthen your core muscles. For strengthening your core muscles, holding a plank and it’s variations (elbow, side planks) are the best exercises to go about doing it.

Also try these exercises for strength-

Target 4 sets of squats with 20 in each set

– Squats (Mix it up with sumo squats)

– Lunges (Forward, backward and lateral lunges)

➤ Flexibility

Flexibility determines the amount of movement your bones can make in any direction around joints such as shoulders, elbows, hips and knees.

It is an aspect that will help you trek comfortably. Carrying a backpack, however light, can become a strain. Stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors and lower back muscles regularly, promotes relaxation in the tissues reducing the strain on your back.

If you can’t go out and jog because of time and space constraints,  here’s a video  you can use to work out indoors.

Frequently Asked Questions

❖ can i do this trek if i have never been on a trek before.

Yes and No . A person who follows an active lifestyle, can consider Savandurga for their first trek. For people who lead a relatively sedentary lifestyle, we recommend a slightly less strenous trek like Brahmagiri or Skandagiri.

❖ Can I trek Savandurga at night?

No . Night trekking to Savandurga is banned.

However, if you want to experience one of the most spectacular sunrises on a trek filled with colors, we recommend you reach the base by 5 AM and start your trek. This way, you will see the sun rising on the east as you traverse from east to west.

❖ Do I need to obtain permission for trekking to Savandurga?

Yes. There was a time in between when Karnataka Ecotourism had bought a system requiring permission and it was quickly removed due to some conflicts with the locals. Recently, in April 2023 , this rule was put into mandate again. You need to get permission currently to trek. Here is the link to register and obtain permission .

Savandurga Hills Trek: Timings, Entry Fee, Best Time to Visit and How to Reach

Just 60 km away from the bustling city of Bengaluru, lies the serene and majestic Savandurga Hills, a trek that I’ve had the pleasure of undertaking multiple times. Each journey to the top of Asia’s largest monolith hill has been a unique experience, filled with challenges, breathtaking views, and a sense of accomplishment.

Savandurga Hills Trek Board

From the panoramic vistas of Magadi, Manchabele and Thippagondanahalli reservoirs, to the winding Arkavathi river, the scenery is simply mesmerizing. The Savandurga hill cluster, comprising the “Karigudda” (Black hill) and “Biligudda” (White hill), along with the historic Savandurga fort, has always been a sight to behold.

Here are the Savandurga Hills Trek Timings, Entry Fee and Key Details:

You check the pricing information on Karnataka Tourism website .

History Savandurga Hills

Nestled in the heart of Karnataka, Savandurga, a hill 33 km west of Bangalore, rises to 1226 m above mean sea level.

Savandurga Hills is considered to be among the largest monolith hills in Asia . Comprising two hills, the Billigudda (white hill) and the Karigudda (black hill), Savandurga provides a thrilling environment for trekking and rock climbing.

Savandurga was a prominent place during the Hoysala rule. The hill fort on the top of the hill was erected in 1543 by Samanta Raya .

Savandurga Hills was under the control of Kempe Gowda until 1728 when it was captured by the Raja of Mysore, who subsequently lost it to Haider Ali. In 1791, during the Third Anglo-Mysore War, Lord Cornwallis seized Savandurga from Tipu Sultan’s army.

At the base of these hills, one can find the Savandi Veerabhadreshwara Swamy and Narasimha Swamy temples, drawing pilgrims from across the region.

The journey to these temples is thrilling due to the uneven path, thus making it to the wish-list of rock-climbers, cave-explorers, and adventurers.

Getting to Savandurga Hills

The journey to Savandurga is half the adventure. There are two main routes to get there from Bangalore.

  • The first is the NICE toll road , which extends from Electronic City to Mysore Road. Despite being a longer route for some, I recommend this route for its well-maintained roads and quick travel time.
  • Alternatively, you can drive through the city on smaller roads and join Mysore Road. After reaching Mysore road, a drive through the Savandurga forest and some charming villages will get you to the base of the hills.
  • If you’re taking a bus, you can catch one from Majestic Bus Stop to Magadi and then a shared auto or bus to Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple.

The serenity of the forests at night and the allure of the moonlit road are experiences I highly recommend. However, remember to remain cautious while navigating through this area.

My Savandurga Hills Trek Experience

The Savandurga Hills trek offers two trails – “Karigudda” and “Biligudda”. However, the Forest Department only permits the Biligudda trail for public trekking .

The starting point of this trail is near the Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple.

The trek is divided into three main sections, each with its own unique challenges and rewards:

  • Sri Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy Temple to Rocky Section: This section is a light ascent till you reach the base of the hill. It’s a pleasant 10 to 15-minute walk that always serves as a great warm-up for the journey ahead.
  • Rocky Section to Fort Wall I: This is where the real challenge begins. The path becomes steeper and demands a good level of fitness. I’ve found that a steady pace can get you through this section in about 20-25 minutes.
  • Fort Wall I to Nandi Temple (Summit) via Fort Wall II: The final stretch of the trek is the most demanding, but also the most rewarding. The trail transitions into a rocky cave structure and then into a muddy trail right until you reach the top. It’s a tough hour-long walk, but the view from the top makes it all worth it.

From the lush green forests to the sparkling reservoirs and the distant villages of Ramanagara and Magadi, the view from the summit is a sight I look forward to every time I embark on this trek.

Best Time to Visit Savandurga Hills

Having done the Savandurga Hills Trek multiple times, I can confidently say that the best time to undertake this journey is between the end of September to February .

The summer heat can make the rocks unbearable, and the monsoons can make the trail slippery and dangerous.

Savandurga Hills Trekking Essentials:

Make sure you are prepared for the Savandurga Hills Trek. Here are my recommendation:

  • Appropriate Footwear : You need shoes with rugged grip and a robust sole that can withstand the terrain. Test your shoes on the rock surface before beginning your climb. Also, avoid climbing in wet weather as the rocks can become slippery.
  • Comfortable Attire : Dress comfortably, considering the climate. In the early morning, warm clothes are advisable, while light-coloured, breathable fabric is best for a post-sunrise climb. Gloves can be helpful too.
  • Assess Your Fitness Level : Take your time and pace yourself. This is not a race. The incline can be daunting, and it’s easy to lose your breath if you rush. It’s important to remember that the same trek back awaits you after reaching the top.
  • Travel Light : Carry minimal supplies during the day. Vendors sell water and snacks on the way up, but it might cost you a bit more.
  • Follow the Arrows : The trail is well-marked on Google Maps. Stick to the path, and if something seems too risky, it probably is.

Savandurga Hills Trekking Tips:

Here are some handy tips for your Savandurga Hills Trekking journey:

  • The Climb is Divisible : The trek can be divided into three stages. The initial climb to the fort is relatively easy, but the final part of this stage has a very steep incline. Take it slow and steady. The climb beyond the fort, to the artificial lakes and hut-like structure, is a bit steep and long but manageable. Finally, the hardest part is the climb till Nandi. It involves traversing through fallen boulders and bare rocks and can be quite the adrenaline rush.
  • Ideal Time to Visit : Early morning is the best time to start your trek, both to avoid the hot sun and to catch a glimpse of the awe-inspiring sunrise. Avoid trekking here during the rainy season as the plain rock surface becomes extremely slippery.
  • Who Should Avoid This Trek : This trek is not recommended for the elderly or very young children due to the difficulty level. The entire hill is composed of hard, plain rocks, which can get unbearably hot after noon.
  • Food Provisions on the Hill : There are several shops at the base of the mountain and a few sellers at the top who offer drinks and snacks . However, prepare to pay double the usual price. You can try the chat sold near the peak for a reasonable 50rs.

Savandurga Hills Parking

There is paid parking available at the bottom of the Savandurga Hills. I have paid Rs 40 for my 4 wheeler. 2 wheeler parking costs Rs 20. Make sure to reach early to get an assured parking spot.

Savandurga has two temples at its base. These temples dated back to 1340 AD and believed to have been built by the Hoysala rulers. One is the Savandi Veerabhadraswamy temple and the other being the Sree Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple. The way to the top divided into four sections. Most of the trekking route lies on the southern side of the monolith, ranging from 700-950 feet of technical climbs. The path towards the top commences behind the Narasimhaswamy temple. There will be an asphalt stroll of 200 to 300m which prompts the trail. The course is generally simple to discover as devotees and trekkers seen going towards it. The underlying path chases a muddy trail in the direction of some undergrowth. This area is a light rising until you arrive at the base of the slope. The rocky segment or the bottom of the hill denotes the finish of the first ascent. It should take you around 10 to 15 minutes to arrive at the base of the slope.

Manchinbele reservoir

The subsequent segment starts as you step onto the slope and begin strolling up towards the highest point. Prescribed to start this area promptly in the day as once the sun gets overhead, the stone warms up and it can turn out to be very testing to climb in the heat, particularly throughout the summer months. No sooner than you start climbing up the rock, you'll get the chance to see significantly more greenery and glances of the Manchinbele reservoir. This area is somewhat steep. It's a decent 400-500m rising and should take 20-25 mins. The path isn't straightforward to spot, so look out for markings on the rocks and stones to guarantee you are on the right track. When you arrive at the old fort structure, you've finished the second segment of the trek.

Manchinbele and Thippagondanahalli

From here the course turns significantly steeper. It is, in any event, an hour-long approach to another fort wall. There are impressions like engravings in the rock, utilized to climb up the slope. These spaces in the stone presumably cut in from the period of Dalavayi Devaraja or even prior. In this area, you will likewise get the opportunity to see the accumulation of rainwater in the hollow formations of the hill. You will also come across a couple of tanks used to store rainwater by the inhabitants of the fort.

A couple of moments after you arrive at the second fort wall; you get a break from the rocky path. The course presently changes into a rocky cavern structure and afterwards into a sloppy track directly until you arrive at the top. This part is somewhat dubious as the path is unbalanced, and on the off chance that you miss the markings, you may get off the trail. Additionally, there are parts where you'll need to jump and move over boulders. Once you cross these boulders, you soon arrive at the top. Then you will have to walk towards the Nandi temple and soak in the extraordinary sight. It should take you around 10-15 minutes at max to arrive at the sanctuary. The excursion is amazingly remunerating as the view from the top is terrific. You can see the lavish green backwoods and parts of the Manchinbele and Thippagondanahalli supplies and in the skyline sight at towns of Ramanagara and Magadi.

Savandurga Trek – Trek on the Largest Monolith Hills of Asia

September 30, 2017 by madur

Savandurga trek trail is an adventure buffs paradise. The hill of Savandurga (Savanadurga) lies off Magadi Road, 60 kilometres west of Bangalore, Karnataka. Being 1226 metres above sea level, it is believed to be one of the biggest monolith hills of Asia. It is formed by two hills, the black hill or Karigudda and white hill or Biligudda. The place is ideal for trekking.

The Sanskrit word Saavana means three times ritual. The hill lies in the lap of nature. Covered with scrubs and deciduous trees, one can easily spot yellow throat bulbuls, while sloth bear and leopards can be found in some parts. Earlier, there were no steps that led to the top of the hills. It used to be covered extensively by bamboo trees. Spend some time picnicking at the foothills of Savandurga. You can also indulge in rock climbing or cave exploration.  Let’s know more about Savanadurga trek.

Savandurga Trek Trails

Savandurga trek is not very difficult. The hill has gentle slopes that can be trekked by a novice as well. Most of the trekking routes lie on the southern side of the monolith, ranging from 700-950 feet of technical climbs. The trek is composed of hard-core trekking coupled with sports. Owing to its location, the rock gets quite hot when the sun is right on top. Nevertheless, it is meant for adventure enthusiasts and thrill seekers.

When on Savandurga trek, trekking uphill leads to a fortress built by Kempe Gowda II. The fortress was later occupied by Tipu Sultan . Yellow lines mark the trail of Niligudda; however, they are missing and can get quite confusing at Karigudda. It is 2 kilometres trek one way and can be done over a day. During the rainy season, however, it could get quite challenging and must be avoided. Be sure to take all the precautions when setting out on Savanadurga trek.

Manchanabele Dam: This dam is situated close to Savanadurga and offers a variety of water sports.

Temples: There are two main places of worship on these hills. The one on the foothills is that of Sri Savandi Veerabhadraswamy and the other is of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy with an idol of Lord Narasimha.

How to Reach Savanadurga

The closest airport to Savanadurga is Kempegowda International Airport which is just 90 kilometres.

The best option is to reach Magadi by train. The railway station is barely 12 kilometres away from the hill.

Savandurga has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to ancient times. According to some sources, Savandurga was originally called Savandi by the locals, which means “the fort of death” . This name was given because of the many battles and wars that took place on its hills over the years.

Some of the historical events and legends associated with Savandurga are:

- Savandurga was part of the Hoysala Empire in the 12th century CE.

- Savandurga was captured by Kempe Gowda II, the founder of Bangalore, in the 16th century CE.

Savandurga is one of the largest monoliths in Asia and one of the highest hills in Karnataka. A monolith is a single piece of rock that forms a hill or a mountain. Savandurga is composed of granite rocks that are eroded by wind and water over millions of years. The rocks have different colors and textures depending on their mineral composition and exposure to sunlight.

Savandurga consists of two hills, Billigudda (the white hill) and Karigudda (the black hill), which are separated by a valley. Billigudda is called the white hill because its rocks are lighter in color due to more exposure to sunlight. Karigudda is called the black hill because its rocks are darker in color due to less exposure to sunlight.

The hills have an average elevation of about 1200 meters above sea level. The highest point on Billigudda is 1226 meters above sea level, while the highest point on Karigudda is 1227 meters above sea level.

Savandurga hill trek & manchanbele dam: Weekend gateway, Bangalore

Book Treks near Bangalore online

Savandurga is one of the best day treks around Bangalore where people like to go. The view from the top is cherry on top of the Machinable dam. Here are more details about this trek.

Page Contents

Savandurga Trek information:

Time to Trek: 1-2 hours Total Trek distance: 2-3 KmsKm Distance from Bangalore: 60 Kms Permission: not needed Guide: Not needed

With reference to the comments below, I advise people not to take RISK of bathing/swimming inside dthe am. There has been over hundreds of cases of DROWNING and dam with full of boggy mud. Please don’t take the risk of venturing inside the water. However, you can enjoy nature, birds, water, hills, trees around there

(With inputs from Suraj shah)—

A life left behind and we stepped into the shoe of another at 5 in the morning with a bunch of people who were made up of the same trekking stuff as I was. It were Savanadurga and Manchanabele dam on our list next.

What to carry on the trek?

  • Small and light backpack filled with energy bars, glucose, electoral, 2 bottles of water
  • And, don’t forget raincoat in monsoon
  • A nice shoe with high grip is highly recommended.

“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” – Allen Saunders

While we were busy in How to? When? Who all? The plan crafted herself beautifully.

5:30 early morning:

“Bhaiya! I am here at the college gate” and a few minutes later, two engines rev up. Vroooooooom- on the fly. We had hit the Mysore highway before the sun could hit the sky. With few more joined, we were cruising. buy vilitra generic buy vilitra no prescription over the counter  New faces! sharing smiles and laughter with sparks in eyes, in a bunch of 10 on 5 revved-up bikes.

On the way to savanadurga

Let the wind brush your hair. Let the water feed your eye. Wipe them out the, look out, the world is still too shy.

First lesson learned: With a Neta-like guy in team, sharing responsibilities becomes so easy. (Referring to Bibek Bhaiya )

Tough lesson learned: Sometimes, organizers (With whom decided to go for trek) are worse in organizing treks than newbies. Not paying proper attention to whole group makes trip a nightmare.

And, we were victim of the said above. Organizers, constantly following their own plan forced us to take a divulge from them. Thus, resulting in, we, following our own schedule and route according as our timings.

So, the cool weather also turned up with us. Since our fate was decided then and we were no more dependent upon organizers, we did what we wanted to. We flied; we ran; we shouted and lived a thousand years on a single day. Stopping at tea-stalls; enjoying biking in rural Karnataka; intercepting of the monsoon; taking photographs… so on and so forth…..

Oh! Yes! Here, comes the Machanbelle fresh water reservoir.

manchanbele dam and savanadurga in the background

You need to trust me. The first glimpse of this place was simply superb. The Savanadurga hill was easily spotted. We continued to Savanadurga hill. 3 hours of air-ride and we were there at base foot of Savanadurga hill.

9:00am (Under kajrare clouds):

I was over excited for trek since it were around 2 years since I had my last trek. And the journey begins….. The weather was perfect neither too hot nor too cold with dark clouds hovering over us all the time with cool inputs from cool hilly breezes. heaven.

The deep death walk:

savanadurga steep hike

So, at the beginning, we chose the steeper route and we were victims of following symptoms: Legs? Shaking Eyes? Avoiding heights. Backpack? Is a burden now Curse the shoe, curse the wrong path

“Calm down, walk laterally”. Whoa! Three from our group had already crossed the steeper part and were sitting as cool as a cigar smoking shaikh from Arabia. Frightened were we.(Akhilesh Bhaiya! If you could remember it).

So, if you let your feet slip or wanna try sliding, there won’t be any chances left for you to realize the trance that you would pass through until you hit the base which was almost 300 feet down below the hill.

12:00 noon (Hot sun started smiling at us):

It took us almost three hours to reach at the top with sufficient breaks, more than enough fun, extra photography sessions and little amateur wildlife exploration. Route to the top was marked with yellow paints.

From the top:

savanadurga hill top

Machanbelle reservoir had shrunk smaller. Trees had grown shorter and even few smalls hills were standing lower to me. Wind speed was way off the charts. Just standing up straight became a challenge.

I removed my shoes and bags and sat in a corner. Sweats and wind were in perfect combination. Eat, wonder, roam, realize, shout, get afraid of heights, feel closer to the God, meet someone adventurous inside you- as much as you can and keep falling in love with that moment time and again.

Time to return (Never liked it):

savanadurga hill

Packed with lighter bags (You know why?), back on same track. The descent was much quicker with no breaks at all. we were rolling like stones down the hill. This one hour journey lets you face the valley (Because while climbing up you face the rocks). Wow! Green shawl laid over earth. Misty clouds, chilling winds, rocks popping out of the forests like rocky giraffe popping out of Africa dry forests.

Were I somewhere out of the earth?Walking and wondering in synchrony. Birds flying at par with you. Can you realize a totally different life from 3000 feet above the ground.

Time to say good bye to organizers:

from savanadurga to manchanbele dam

We decided to break away from the whole bunch (Like we had enough of girl-friend stuff with them) and follow our own instinct to explore further. We, ten in numbers? Enough guys in a bunch. Come on, lets go then. Biking through the reserved forest. Haha, superfluously, I had rather say, I was exploring dry Amazon river basin with Benhur’s motor chariots in a row. buy Tretinoin generic buy Tretinoin no prescription over the counter  Hunked, Muscleed, tough headed and cooled inside.

Water, water, water. – A large dam with fresh pool of water. Shallow in monsoon but enticing and deep enough to make you shiver like a guy holding the hands of a girl first time. Ah! its cold! – An ideal place to enjoy Bird-watching, relish the beauty of the nature, photography and spending some peace time there.

Warning: I advise no one to venture inside the water as it has been a death trap of hundreds of people in last few years.

4 pm (Romanies under rain):

Weather is dark and cold. Few drops of water have begun kissing your chicks; pricking your eyes and whispering in your ears while we kicked in on the way to Bangalore. We had not even covered 20 Kms and we were welcomed with pattering rains all over.

Take a break? or not to? Let’s keep moving soldiers.

So, the last element of success which we were missing was now with us- The rain (Remember the movie “The fifth element”, try to find an analogy even if you could not). Sun, wind, rocks, water and now rain.

Exciting but little apprehensive of skidding over highways. The roads which were dry and sunny while going, were wet and dark while returning reminding me of new blackboard in village schools. All dry small rivulets and hanging falls got a new life under heavy rain most probably after one year, as I had got a new life after the break of two years. People standing under bridges and us? Driving past them.

So, at Manchanbelle dam, everyone had got extra pair of dry cloths except me but now, their, so as to say EXTRA DRY PAIR OF CLOTHINGS, were WET now. hahahah. Sigh! Nature balanced all.

This was one of the best trek i have ever had…. funny also i say…….

19th august 2013: Murali Kumar 28 year drowned in manchanbele dam. 15 October 2013: 4 young people all around 20 drowned in manchanbele dam. Till no prominent board with warning signs in English/hindi has been placed near water site. No rescue measure not even a strong rope is available near water site. We are yet to get the list of deaths at this dam from tavakere P.S. though asked for under RTI. 4 months completed since our personal loss and 5 more deaths in same place (as many I have gathered through internet) The gates have not been closed to prevent entry of unaware youths neither any measure taken to warn them. Young lives are of no value to the Police/grampanchayat/Irrigation department or administration as a whole. These are only our personal losses, these youths were of not any value for the nation.

Just wanted to add to the chorus to those who read this excellent blog, that it is not simply about not “swimming”. Even wading in for a short distance of 10 feet or so could get you into quicksand like mud and silt that can suck you under quickly. Do not take even a small chance. Enjoy the view and shoreline, do not even think about wading in. Thank you for taking these comments seriously and re-editing your blog so that others can enjoy this place of beauty safely. Our family is heart-broken over our loss of our loved one and we are actively on a campaign to get the word out in various forums and to help in posting signs and other warnings so this never happens again.

Manchanbele resorvoir is very dangerous, full of silt deposits which can drag a person treacherously into death. water has any poisonous snakes, crocodiles. not a single warning sign near the water site. Only few boards of green and white along the way in between green trees will mention ‘danger and rest in Kannada so that non Kannada youth can not read anything. Please enquire the number of deaths from Tavakere Police station and post them in these alluring travel sites. We lost our beloved Sambit on 16th June, not even a month leaving a 32 year widow a 2 year old daughter and a whole family of old parents relations mourning. please do something to make others aware of the treacherous death trap. local villagers are very much aware and they do not enter water. They know that only ‘engineers ‘ doctors, college students come and many are drowned here. Savandurga trekking track has more numbers of accidents than manchanbele. Please do something that no other family goes through the same ill fate as we are going through. Ours is not first but at least this could be the last if all readers put some effort to move administration.

I have updated the blog about the risk involved in going inside dam..thank you people of coming up with facts

' src=

Manchanbele dam is full of deep silt, slush just 2 feet inside from the shores and water snakes, so NO Swimming in those waters PLEASE. It’s a DEATH TRAP. The WARNING at the entrance of the dam gate is only in the local language. The warning in English is 1 Km ahead past the main dam entrance gate. Since 2006 till July 2011, more than 200 DROWNING cases have been registered in the nearby Police station (20 KMs away from the dam). In 2013 January till June, more than 10 drowning cases have been to the nearby police station, but yet no action to save lives have been taken by the police, tourism department or the administration. There is neither any Rescue team nor any signboards in English/Hindi on the shore nor any/limited mobile range.

http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/bangalore/over-200-drowned-in-manchanabele-waters-since-2006/article2232746.ece

The view of the dam overall is very mesmerizing and pleasant. It is good only for spending out a day and bird watching.

PLEASE stay AWAY from the WATER. It’s a DEATH TRAP. No Immediate HELP!!!

Do NOT enter the WATER, More links justifying the above statement:

Its well written indeed, but would like to put in a gentle reminder to whoever reads this blog after me, that the water of Manchanabele is a death trap. I lost my own brother in law in a drowning accident on the 16th of June 2013. There is a lot of slush and quick sand which is not apparent at the surface. Since 2005-06 there has been close to 300 drowning accidents. So guys please don’t get into the waters of the reservoirs even if you are a good swimmer.

' src=

SAVE LIVES at MANCHANBELE DAM Good to know that you guys had a good time but do not promote Manchanbele dam especially for venturing into water. The water is dangerous and tricky. Since 2006, more than 600 people have lost their lives there but Govt has not taken any action to prohibit the area or have rescue measures there. Help spread this information among more and more people.

' src=

Very well written and explained.. Almost felt like am there again ! 🙂 Sigh!!

About Place: Savandurga is a place with a fort on a lofty mountain, about 60 km from Bengaluru. The hill consists of two granite cliffs of 4000 feet tall and 13 kilometers (8 miles) in circumference , one called Bilibetta or white peak, another Karibetta or black peak.

It was a prominent place during the Hoysala rule. Over a period of time several rulers held this place. The hill fort on the top of the outcrop was erected in 1543 by Samanta Raya. It then came to Immadi Kempe Gowda of Bengaluru until 1728 when it was captured by the Raja of Mysore from whom it passed to Haider Ali. During the Anglo-Mysore Wars of the late 18th century, Savandurga was the most forbidding of all the Tippu's hill forts in the area and hitherto deemed impregnable. Nevertheless, British troops under Cornwallis commanded by Lt Col Stuart mounted a successful assault against the fort in December 21, 1791.

The entire area is covered by verdure and serene atmosphere. This region is famous for medicinal plants and shrub forest. This is a paradise for the climbing enthusiasts. Climbers can scale sheer rock faces enduring up to grade 7. It is also good for a day's trek and camping at the foothill.

Savandurga Trek

Savandurga Trek(1)

Activity Highlights

  • This activity will be conducted in English language(s).
  • Situated at a height of 4220 ft above sea level, it is said to be the largest monolith in Asia.
  • Enjoy adventurous rappelling activity.
  • Have lunch at the resort, followed by other adventure activities in and around the lake (Kayaking, Zip-lining, Archery, Rain Dance, etc.)
  • One can spot beautiful migratory birds in the green horizons.

Savandurga is one of the challenging treks situated 60 km away from Bangalore in Savandurga state forest, this trail is famous for its challenging climb and amazing views of Magadi, Manchabele, and Thippagondanahalli reservoirs and Arkavathi river. Situated at a height of 4220 ft above sea level, it is said to be the largest monolith in Asia. If seen from a distance, it looks like a massive stone. Named Savandurga by Immadi Kempe Gauda, this hill fortress was believed to be unconquerable until the British took over in 1791; Lord Cornwallis has written a detailed account of its capture. Savandurga comprises of twin peaks, one is Karigudda or The Black Hill and the other is Biligudda or The White Hill. Biligudda has been a fort prison during the Hoysala Empire. On the top of the hill, one can see ruins of the fort that were built by Kempegowda. The composition of the hill is mainly granite. A panoramic lush green view of the exteriors of Bangalore is seen from the top. The hill is surrounded by the forest region of Magadi. If lucky, one can spot beautiful migratory birds in the green horizons

The hill looks imposing as one drives closer to it and it is easy to understand why it is called the ‘rock of death.’ The Nandi mantapa looks like a small square on top and all visible sides of the rock look steep and dangerous; only upon reaching the base does one see the rock’s gentle slopes.

What's included

  • Reach the base camp and have breakfast
  • Start the trek towards Karadi Kallu Betta
  • Climb the peak and indulge in photography
  • Descend to base camp
  • Enjoy adventurous rappelling activity
  • Enjoy the sunset with tea and snacks, unwind for a while
  • Start our journey back to Bengaluru.

Know Before you go

  • Trekking is best enjoyed when you’ve worn comfortable clothes. Try and avoid wearing Jeans, bright colors, and heavy apparel as much as possible.
  • A lighter backpack always helps you have a better trek, try and carry just as much as needed.
  • Always be in sight of your trek lead, if you feel the need to stop for any reason at all, please keep the trek lead informed.
  • Do not venture out into the forest/waterfalls on your own as it may be dangerous.
  • Avoid smoking and consumption of alcohol, and other intoxicants during the course of the trek.

Things To Carry

Meeting and pickup, frequently asked questions.

The difficulty level of Savandurga Trek is considered moderate to challenging. While the trek is manageable for beginners with basic fitness levels, it does involve steep ascents and descents. It is advisable for beginners to go with a group and a local guide who can provide assistance and ensure a safe trekking experience.

The best time to trek Savandurga is during the post-monsoon and winter months, from September to February. During this period, the weather is relatively cool, and the landscape is lush and green. Avoid trekking during the summer months, especially during peak afternoon hours, as the heat can make the trek more challenging.

Since Savandurga is a natural trekking destination, restroom facilities might be limited. Trek organizers often arrange for basic facilities at the base or starting point. Participants should be prepared for basic amenities during the trek and are advised to use restroom facilities before embarking on the trek.

Organized treks prioritize participant safety. They typically provide experienced guides, first aid kits, and communication devices. It's essential to attend any pre-trek briefing sessions to understand safety guidelines, emergency procedures, and any specific precautions. Participants are encouraged to follow the guide's instructions for a safe trekking experience

Many organized trekking companies offer the option to rent trekking gear, including shoes, backpacks, and other essentials. Participants should inquire about rental options in advance and make necessary arrangements if they do not have their own trekking equipment. This ensures that everyone has the appropriate gear for a comfortable trek.
