9 Stunning Day Trips from Sorrento, Italy

From magnificent islands to beautiful villages carved out of the cliffside to some of the world’s most famous archaeological ruins, there is no limit to the variety of day trips from Sorrento that you can take.

If you’re planning a trip to Sorrento and hoping to use it as a jumping-off point to visit some truly remarkable destinations in Campania, you’ve come to the right place.

With its accessible train station, port, and plentiful bus routes, Sorrento is one of the best-connected places to stay near the Amalfi Coast–and the options for Sorrento day trips leave no stone unturned.

Here are the best day trips from Sorrento.

Amalfi Coast

Of course, how can we start anywhere else: the shimmering, sparkling, legendary Amalfi Coast is the best-known of all these day trips from Sorrento. Italy’s most famous coastline lives up to the hype and is absolutely magical to experience in person.

There are a few ways to reach the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento, most notably by ferry, bus, rental car, or tour.

The drive is magnificent, but not for the faint of heart–we wouldn’t recommend taking it on unless you’re comfortable driving on very narrow roads perched on high cliffs as gigantic tour buses speed past you.

Ferry and bus both make for solid options, especially if you want to visit more offbeat spots, but the logistics of getting from town to town can include lots of crowds and complexity–speaking from experience, it hardly makes for a luxurious or relaxing day.

The easiest way to take a day trip the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento is simply to book a guided tour –this one will show you the most popular spots on the coast efficiently and help you avoid wasting any of your precious time waiting around for a bus or ferry.

As for what to do when you get there, there are dozens of memorable places to visit along the Amalfi Coast, from villages to beaches to hikes, but we’ll just call out a few below to give you an idea of your options when taking a day trip to the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento.

Photo of Positano from above on the Amalfi Coast, a classic Italy honeymoon destination. You can see Positano beach and the sea to the left.

Positano, Amalfi & Ravello

The three most famous of all the villages along the Amalfi Coast are all incredibly popular to visit, and for visitors who only have one day to explore the coast, often their only three stops.

Positano is known for its near-vertical building style and beach, Amalfi for its cathedral, and Ravello for its absolutely magnificent views of the Amalfi Coast.

Path of the Gods

Between the villages of Bomerano and Nocelle along the Amalfi Coast runs one of the most beautiful hiking trails in all of Italy.

The main portion is only about 4 miles, but you’ll be in for quite the workout if you decide to finish by descending from Nocelle to Positano by foot. The views, however, are worth the effort.

If you’d rather not go it alone but would like to experience the Path of the Gods, you can also join a guided hike !

Fiordo di Furore

This hidden beach is tucked behind Italy’s only fjord and provides a picture-perfect place to spend a beach day along the Amalfi Coast.

Taking a day trip to Capri is like taking a trip to another dimension.

From Capri, the blue of the water glistens just a little brighter. The curves of the cliffs are just a bit more majestic. The location, in general, is just a bit otherworldly–like something out of a legend.

Capri’s magnificent beauty has been beckoning the rich and famous to visit it for a couple of millennia, from Roman emperors to modern movie stars, and thousands of others in between.

While you’re there, be sure to take a boat tour around the island (generally included in a day tour from Sorrento if you book one), take in the views from the Garden of Augustus, and tour Villa San Michele.

We don’t recommend eating up hours of your precious day trip time to tour the Blue Grotto, but if you have your heart set on visiting it, you definitely do so.

You can reach Capri from Sorrento by either ferry or tour, but the tours are such excellent value that they’re well worth taking!

Pompeii

Pompeii is one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, and it truly defies words.

You will not be squinting at ruins and imagining what might have been in Pompeii.

Instead, you will be strolling down roads as well-maintained as many modern ones, walking in and out of intact buildings, and truly walking through a ghost town–a thriving city that one fateful day in 79 AD, simply stopped.

A visit to Pompeii is not one that you’ll forget anytime soon, and while it’s fairly simple to reach Pompeii from Sorrento independently via the Circumvesuviana train and a bus ride, having a guided tour once you reach the city will greatly enhance your visit, and we highly recommend having one.

This guided tour from Take Walks would be our first pick–they’re a wonderful company, and we’ve never had anything but stellar experiences on their tours–but if you’d prefer an option that also includes transportation to Pompeii as part of your day trip from Sorrento, this day trip is also a fantastic option.

Visiting Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius: Center of Pompeii

The tiny island of Procida (we’re talking only about 1.5 square miles total here!) is the smallest island in the Bay of Naples, far less touristy than Capri or even Ischia, and is the perfect day trip from Sorrento for travelers looking to get off the beaten path for foreign tourists and explore a cozy, colorful island.

Come during the week for the quietest experience, as the island fills up with Italian families on summer weekends, and be sure not to miss the opportunity to soak in the views from Terra Murata!

You can reach Procida from Sorrento by ferry, but if you have your heart set on this Sorrento day trip idea, be sure to plan ahead, as the ferries only run a few days per week.

View of Procida Harbor and colorful town from above with pink flowers in the foreground. Procida is one of the best day trips from Sorrento Italy.

Herculaneum

Despite being lesser-known, the story of the city of Herculaneum is nearly identical to its far-more-famous neighbor, Pompeii: this ancient Roman (though originally Greek–can you guess which Greek figure the city was named for?) city was buried in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, obliterating a thriving city while simultaneously preserving it for the future.

In its heyday, Herculaneum was both smaller and wealthier than middle-class Pompeii, making it easier to tour, and in some ways, even more interesting, as the homes tend to be a bit more opulent.

Even better, Herculaneum is one of the easiest day trips from Sorrento to take independently, as you can simply hop on the Circumvesuviana train and be dropped off a short walk away from Herculaneum–no buses or ferries required.

Like Pompeii, though, it can be extremely valuable to have the context a guide brings when you tour the site, so don’t hesitate to book a tour if you’d like the hear the details behind the city!

Prefer the context of a tour? This fun day trip combines a guided tour of Herculaneum with a trip to Mount Vesuvius!

View of ruins of Herculaneum from above with Mount Vesuvius in the background. Herculaneum is one of the easiest Sorrento day trips to take independently.

Set in the Bay of Naples, the beautiful island of Ischia is located an hour to an hour and a half away from Sorrento by ferry (depending on the route that day), and makes a laid-back and lovely option for those hoping for an island day trip that is a bit more relaxed than glitzy Capri, but bigger than tiny Procida.

Ischia is gaining in popularity with foreign visitors these days, but is still delightfully under the radar as compared to Capri. It has been popular with Italians for generations and played a role in Elena Ferrante’s phenomenal Neapolitan Novels (which, side note, I cannot recommend highly enough if you’re looking for something to read during your trip to Sorrento!).

You won’t be able to accomplish all that Ischia has to offer on a day trip, but consider paying a visit to Aragonese Castle, climbing Mount Epomeo for stunning views of the island, soaking in some of Ischia’s natural thermal spas, or–of course–relaxing on the beach.

Village of Forio on Ischia Island as seen from the water, one of the best day trips from Sorrento Italy

Mount Vesuvius

Once upon a time, towering Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the thriving cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in ash, where they would remain hidden for nearly 2000 years.

Today, that powerful, awe-inspiring force of destruction can be visited up close–in fact, you can tour the crater.

Visiting Mount Vesuvius will give you an opportunity to visit the smoldering crater of an active volcano (no lava visible, though) while also taking in some truly phenomenal views of the Bay of Naples–on a clear day, you can see all the way to Capri!

You can visit Mount Vesuvius by bus or tour, and the parking lot where you are dropped off is about a 20-minute climb, give or take, from the crater.

Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes and bring a jacket with you–it can often be far colder up there than in Sorrento.

This popular day tour from Sorrento combines a visit to Pompeii with a trip to Mount Vesuvius!

When it comes to Italian cities, Naples often gets a bit of a bad rap, often being called too crowded, too dirty, too hilly.

And yes, it’s definitely a bit rougher around the edges than some Italian cities, but it’s also beautiful and complex, with a history that rivals Florence or Venice, a fascinating underground, stunning views over the Bay of Naples, and, of course, some of the best pizza on Earth.

A day trip from Sorrento to Naples is the perfect way to get a taste of one of Italy’s most controversial cities, and see for yourself what you think–personally, the first time we visited Naples, we were surprised by how quickly we came to love it.

Stroll through the Piazza del Plebiscito, sip coffee at the opulent Caffe Gambrinus, snack on a sfogliatella, explore Via Toledo, visit Naples’ incredible archaeological museum, and be sure to visit at least 2-3 of the best pizzerias in Naples.

One Day in Naples Itinerary: view of Castel dell'Ovo

When it comes to ancient ruins near Sorrento, everyone knows Pompeii, and some people have heard of Herculaneum… but have you ever heard of Paestum?

Located nearly 2 hours south of Sorrento by car (and you will want a car for this one–while you can technically reach Paestum via a combination of trains and buses, it’s complex and a hassle), if you’re hoping to get off the beaten path with one of your day trips from Sorrento, Paestum is an excellent choice.

Founded in the 7th century BCE, Paestum is best-known today for being home to some of the best-preserved Ancient Greek temples on the planet, in particular, two temples dedicated to Hera and one to Athena.

15 Unmissable Day Trips from Sorrento

Europe , Italy | June 17, 2022

This post contains affiliate links, which means I may make a small commission if you buy anything mentioned here. It doesn't cost you anything extra.

After getting married in Italy in May, my new husband and I toured some of the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento. Here’s my pick of the best places to visit near Sorrento, from bucket list attractions like Vesuvius and Pompeii to lesser-visited but nonetheless charming villages around Campania.

While there are plenty of exciting things to do in Sorrento , one of the lemon-scented city’s big draws for travellers is its proximity to so many of Italy’s most beautiful spots.

Positano

The iconic Amalfi Coast is just a short journey away via land or sea.

However, if you’re planning to move around to see some places near Sorrento during your holiday, you shouldn’t overlook nearby metropolises like Naples — or the smattering of islands within easy reach.

In this guide, I’ve included details of how and where to book the most popular excursions from Sorrento along with instructions for how to visit each destination independently, where possible.

Of course, no guide to the best places to visit from Sorrento would be complete without some tips for planning day trips to the Amalfi Coast, so I’ve covered that too.

TIP: Taxis are unbelievably expensive in this corner of the world, so my advice is to only resort to them if you absolutely must!

The best places to visit on a day trip from Sorrento

View of Capri from boat

Why should you visit Capri?

Just a short sailing from Sorrento, the island of Capri has become synonymous with luxury travel thanks to its perennial position on Jackie Kennedy’s travel calendar.

The enclave is a magnet for the rich and famous, who come for the luxury hotels and designer boutiques. If it’s good enough for Mariah Carey…

Capri is one of the most popular day trips from Sorrento, and the must-see attraction there is the magical Blue Grotto.

You can read my guide to visiting Capri from Sorrento here .

Spending the night on the Capri? Check hotel prices and availability here .

How to get to Capri by ferry

Travellers on a budget can take the ferry from Sorrento to Capri. The ferry departs from Marina Piccola and costs around €30 per person for a return ticket.

The journey from Sorrento to Capri by ferry takes 30 minutes.

There are ferries departing from Sorrento throughout the day and you don’t need to book your ticket in advance. Just turn up at the kiosk in the morning and buy your round-trip ticket on the spot.

Be sure to check the ferry times though — you don’t want to be stuck on this uber-glam island overnight without accommodation!

In the height of summer, you can expect queues for the ferry to Capri. Factor this into your plans.

Excursions to Capri from Sorrento

We booked a private boat trip to Capri from Sorrento and I definitely recommend taking this route to visit the island.

Some of Capri’s attractions are accessible by boat only, so I think it’s better to book a day trip that includes your transport from Sorrento to Capri and a boat tour around the island.

You can book a day trip from Sorrento to Capri on a private boat with four hours on the island and a chance to see the Blue Grotto.

If you’d like more time on Capri, this excursion gives you six hours to explore and includes a trip to Leranto Bay, which is a protected marine area.

Travelling solo or don’t have the budget for a private tour? Book a trip on a shared boat that gives you five hours on the island, pick up and drop off and limoncello tasting.

Pompeii

Why should you go to Pompeii?

If you’re remotely interested in history, Pompeii is a must-visit. The ancient city was buried under up to 20ft of volcanic ash after Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79.

Today, it’s one of the world’s most famous archeological sites.

Visit the excavated city to see the remnants of Roman civilisation. The archeological site offers a unique glimpse into everyday life as you walk around the preserved temples, Roman baths, houses and theatres.

How to get from Sorrento to Pompeii by train

The cheapest way to visit Pompeii is to visit independently. There’s a train from Sorrento to Pompeii from Sorrento train station . You’ll find the train station opposite Piazza Angelina Lauro in Sorrento.

Circumvesuviana Trains to Pompeii from Sorrento are around €10 return per person. The journey takes around 30 minutes and you get off right outside Pompeii.

In the busy summer months, you’ll need to get to the train station as early as possible to avoid getting crushed in the sweaty crowds.

One of the easiest ways to visit Pompeii is to go there straight from the airport when you land in Naples. This isn’t for everyone, but it works well if you’re short on time.

Alternatively, if you’re staying in Naples, you can get a return ticket for the shuttle bus to Pompeii here .

Once you’re there, the entrance fee for Pompeii is €18 per person. Unless you’ve got a degree in the history of the site, I’d recommend also paying for an audio guide at Pompeii, which costs €8.

To save time, you can get a skip-the-line ticket with audioguide for a little more (recommended in summer). If you don’t want the audio guide but do want to avoid queueing, buy this ticket in advance .

Alternatively, you can pay more for a guided tour. Check prices and availability for your travel dates here .

Super keen to learn all about Pompeii from an expert? You can even book a tour with an archeologis t!

Pompeii tours from Sorrento

If you’re looking for an organised day trip from Sorrento to Pompeii, this one has five star reviews and covers all of your costs.

It includes a stop at Mount Vesuvius, so you’ll see two of the most famous sights near Sorrento in one day!

If an entire day at Pompeii in the heat sounds overwhelming, you can tie your visit in with a trip to a winery. Enjoy a trip to a nearby winery where you can dine on a sumptuous four-course lunch and taste lots of local wine.

I found an excursion that goes directly from Pompeii to the wine, so you could do the cultural stuff in the morning then spend the afternoon sipping the good stuff under the Italian sun.

Check prices for the Pompeii and wine tour and availability here .

TIP: Make sure you wear comfortable shoes and a hat and pack bottled water for your trip. There aren’t a lot of shaded spots at Pompeii.

3. Positano

Positano from the sea

Why visit Positano?

The jewel in the crown of the Amalfi Coast, Positano is the picture-perfect village depicted on postcards and lusted after by Instagram addicts all over the world.

Its vertiginous houses cascade down to the sea from dizzying heights, creating that iconic view.

There really is something special about this sophisticated seaside resort town and it permeates the chic boutiques, restaurants and even the back streets.

A one-day trip from Sorrento is the perfect amount of time to spend in Positano as there isn’t a huge amount to see.

However, there’s nothing more romantic than a night in Positano! After dark, the seemingly endless flow of day-trippers subsides and the destination’s glitzy nightlife recommences.

We stayed at a fabulous hotel called Buca di Bacco during our mini-moon on the Amalfi Coast.

We were absolutely thrilled with the hotel’s location (I did a lot of research into the best balcony views) and the hotel breakfast served on the terrace is perfection.

Book Buca di Bacco here or check out other hotels in Positano.

How to get to Positano by bus from Sorrento

Positano from the sea

Before you read any further, be warned! Even in May, the buses from Sorrento to Positano (and indeed anywhere along the Amalfi Coast) are ridiculously busy.

Be prepared to get up at the crack of dawn, wait in a queue, and watch full buses drive past you during peak season.

If you do manage to get on a bus to Positano from Sorrento, you’ll find they’re hot and crowded. Make sure you have a cold bottle of water with you.

Still determined to get the bus? Okay…

The public SITA bus runs regularly from Sorrento railway station to Positano. It costs a couple of Euros and the journey takes roughly one hour.

How to get to Positano by ferry from Sorrento

Positano from above

You can get a ferry to Positano from Marina Piccola. Head to the kiosks in the morning and buy your ticket. The price of a ferry ticket from Sorrento to Positano is around 20 Euros.

The first Positano ferry departs at 9am though timetables vary depending on the time of year you’re visiting.

The journey time for the ferry from Sorrento to Positano is around 40 minutes.

I recommend sitting on the left-hand side of the ferry for unobstructed views of the coastline.

If you don’t look at the tourists behind you, it’s almost like having a private charter!

Ferry from Sorrento to Positano view

Organised day trips from Sorrento to Positano

For a stress-free experience, book a tour in an air-conditioned minibus that will take you along the iconic Amalfitana to spend time in Positano, Amalfi and Ravello.

Prefer to sail in to Positano?

You can book a full day boat trip from Sorrento to Positano and Amalfi here . This excursion includes swimming, snorkelling, time in each location and a lunch.

If you’re honeymooning or celebrating something special, this full-day private boat tour from Sorrento to Positano, Ravello and Amalfi looks like the most romantic thing in the world.

Amalfi

Is it worth visiting Amalfi from Sorrento?

Although Amalfi is akin to Sorrento in so much as it’s a busy city, I do think it’s worth the journey. We loved it!

The main tourist attraction in Amalfi is of course the imposing cathedral, Duomo di Amalfi .

But Amalfi is also a great place to shop for souvenirs, swim in the sea and eat a deliciously refreshing lemon sorbet which is served, to my delight, in an actual lemon the size of your head.

I’d recommend spending anywhere from a couple of hours to an entire day in Amalfi.

How to get to Amalfi by bus from Sorrento

Amalfi buildings

If you’re short on time, you can easily squeeze Positano and Amalfi into one day trip from Sorrento.

At time of writing, there had been a recent landslide that was impacting driving times between Sorrento and Amalfi. For this reason, I’d recommend travelling by sea instead.

How to get to Amalfi by ferry

You can either stay on the ferry from Sorrento when it stops in Positano and get dropped off at Amalfi (make sure you have the correct ticket), or buy a ferry ticket to Amalfi in Positano at the marina.

If you’re visiting both Positano and Amalfi in the same day, it makes sense to buy a ticket that covers each stop at the kiosk in Sorrento.

The journey between Positano and Amalfi only takes around 30 minutes by ferry.

Naples

Is Naples worth a visit?

I won’t lie, I didn’t love Naples. We visited Naples from Sorrento on our first trip to the area a few years back and didn’t plan our day there beforehand. Thanks to our poor planning, we experienced all the grit of the city but saw none of its glitz.

That being said, I would give Napoli another chance, but if I return it will be on an organised tour.

Some of the things other travellers love about Naples are the UNESCO protected old town , various markets, underground Roman ruins and the magnificent Castel dell’Ovo .

Pizza is the real attraction for many visitors who brave Naples though. My advice is, go just for that!

How to get from Sorrento to Naples

Most people visiting Sorrento on holiday fly into Naples International Airport. Depending on the length of your flight, it makes sense to kill two birds with one stone and arrange a day tour of Naples before you travel onwards to Sorrento.

Alternatively, you can catch a train from Sorrento to Naples. They leave every half hour and take around 1 hour 15 minutes.

The cost of a one-way train ticket to Naples is under 5 Euro if you’re taking a circumvesuviana train.

Be warned: the circumvesuviana trains connecting Naples and Sorrento aren’t very comfortable and there’s no air conditioning. They can become hot and sticky in summer. Pickpocketers operate on the trains, so keep your belongings close.

Alternatively, you can pay a bit more (around 8 Euro) for a one-way ticket on a Campania Express train. These are more suited to tourists and have fewer stops, cutting your journey time from Sorrento to Naples down to 50 minutes.

The Campania Express trains are seasonal, running from March to October.

Ischia

Ischia is the largest island in the Gulf of Naples and it’s famous for its thermal spas.

The spas vary in their level of sophistication, offering something for every sort of traveller from free thermal springs to expensive spas.

There’s even one you can drink from!

Aside from the potential for rest and relaxation, there’s a lot to see in Ischia: Castello Aragonese, beaches, museums and gardens are just a few of the things travellers go for.

Day trips to Ischia from Sorrento

Avoid the queues and crowds by arranging to join a small group boat tour. This group tour departs from your hotel in Sorrento and will allow you to visit both Ischia and Procida in a day.

It’s worth visiting the beautiful La Mortella Gardens on Ischia.

7. Mount Vesuvius

Sunset view of Vesuvius from Sorrento

Should you visit Vesuvius?

Reigning over the Gulf of Naples, Mount Vesuvius is emblematic of the area. The active volcano is more than 1,200 metres high and treats those who visit to breathtaking views.

Not only is it possible to visit Vesuvius, but you can also climb to its crater. The most popular route is about 4km long and manageable for anyone with good mobility.

Excursions from Sorrento to Vesuvius

Day trips to Vesuvius from Sorrento are commonly combined with a visit to Pompeii. This excursion includes Pompeii, Vesuvius and lunch with a wine tasting.

If Pompeii doesn’t appeal or you’ve already been, there’s also an option to only visit Vesuvius and then do the wine tasting.

Either way, there’s wine. Cheers!

Ravello

Perched high above the Amalfi Coast, Ravello is a gem to those in the know. Just an hour and 20 minutes drive from Sorrento, Ravello is favoured by the cultured crowd. In fact, they probably want to keep their hideaway to themselves!

The town plays host to a classical music festival towards the end of every summer, but that’s not the only reason to visit.

Known as the ‘balcony of the Amalfi Coast’, Ravello’s lofty position offers views you can’t get elsewhere.

How to get to Ravello from Sorrento independently

If you’ve chosen to go by bus, you’ll most likely need to break your journey into two parts. First, take a SITA bus from Sorrento to Amalfi.

I recommend spending time in Amalfi then hopping on a bus from there to Ravello.

A better idea though, is to get a ferry from Sorrento to Positano or Amalfi and get the bus the rest of the way.

9. Herculaneum

Herculaneum

Why visit Herculaneum?

The ancient city of Herculaneum near Pompeii was also buried in ash when Vesuvius erupted, but it’s better preserved than Pompeii.

Named after Hercules, this was a holiday destination for the Romans.

It’s doable in a few hours on a short trip from Sorrento. Don’t miss the men’s baths, Samnite House and Hall of Augustals.

Herculaneum tours

If you’ve made your own way to Herculaneum from Sorrento via Pompeii, you just need to buy a ticket when you get there or get a skip-the-line ticket here .

You can also arrange to have a guided tour here .

If you’re not doing Pompeii, you can reserve your place on a tour of Herculaneum with transport to and from Sorrento .

10. Procida

Procida

Is Procida worth visiting?

Quieter and more unassuming than its big sister Capri, Procida may be small but she is mighty.

Pastel houses tumble into a sunny marina, shops cater to locals rather than tourists and seafood is served in abundance.

While you won’t find a YSL boutique on the island, there are sleepy fishing villages you can potter around while you eat gelato.

Procida is Italy’s Capital of Culture in 2022, so there’s a lot to keep you busy!

How to get to Procida

From Sorrento, you can get a ferry to Procida. The journey takes around 50 minutes.

There are far fewer ferries to Procida than there are to the other two nearby islands, so plan accordingly.

11. Salerno

Salerno

Should you visit Salerno?

Salerno is a busy port city near Sorrento. It takes just over an hour to drive there from Sorrento, or just over two hours if you want to take the more scenic coastal route.

Salerno has all the usual museums, monuments and shops you’d expect to find in an Italian city, as well as one of the longest seaside promenades in the country.

The nightlife is also lively, with most of the action spilling into the streets around the town hall.

How to get to Salerno from Sorrento

Salerno has good transport links. You can get the FlixBus  towards Rome Tiburtina Bus station, get off at Pompeii and switch to the MET 21337 towards Salerno.

To get to Salerno from Sorrento by bus, head to Amalfi then get a SITA bus to Salerno.

The bus journey from Amalfi takes a little more than an hour.

If you’d like to travel from Sorrento to Salerno by direct ferry, the journey takes around 40 minutes.

The ferry company is called NLG and this route is only operated in the summer.

12. Sant’Agata

Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi

Interested in seeing a traditional Italian village while you’re in Sorrento? Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi is for you!

St Agata is worth a visit if you enjoy hiking as it’s located at the foot of the  Lattari Mountains, high above Sorrento. You’ll be treated to unique views over the Sorrentine peninsula as you trek.

Back in the village itself, you’ll find a thriving culinary scene.

How to get to St Agata from Sorrento

You can get the Sita bus from Sorrento, or if you’ve rented a car, follow Via Nastro Azzurro and take the exit for Nerano. The drive takes 20 minutes.

13. Vico Equense

Vico Equense has some great beaches, and it’s not overrun with tourists like Sorrento. It’s also a lot cheaper to eat and drink there than it is in Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast.

If you decide to spend a day in this little town, grab a gelato from Gabriele’s, which is one of the top 10 ice cream places in Italy.

For lunch or dinner, it’s got to be The Pizza Metro, which was the first pizzeria in the world to sell pizza by the metre.

How to get to Vico Equense from Sorrento

Vico Equense is just five stops away from Sorrento by train. Hop on the  Circumvesuviana train line and you’ll be there in 11 minutes!

Vietri sul Mare is another hidden gem where you can enjoy those sought-after Amalfi Coast vistas and picturesque streets without having to battle the crowds.

Located west of Salerno, Vietri is the ‘other’ gateway to the Amalfi Coast – Sorrento being the main one, of course.

The ceramics capital of Campania is a great place to buy unique souvenirs.

Vietri also boasts one of the few Amalfi Coast beaches with sand instead of pebbles: La Baia !

How to get to Vietri from Sorrento

Vietri is the proud owner of the only train station on the Amalfi Coast proper. You can take a train from Sorrento along the Napoli – Salerno route or take a SITA bus.

15. Mount Faito

Towering 1,400 meters above sea level, Faito is one of the peaks along the Lattari mountain chain that crowns the Sorrentine peninsula.

You can climb Mount Faito for immense views or ride the cable car from right outside Castelmare train station. There’s even the option to refuel at one of the restaurants at its peak.

The easiest route is called “Il Sentiero dell’Angelo” and it takes around two hours. It begins near the funivia and ends at the chapel of San Michele.

Mount Faito excursions from Sorrento

If you’re going to hike to the top of Faito, it makes sense to go with a local guide.

You can book an excursion which includes hotel pick-up from wherever you’re staying in Sorrento here . You’ll get a private guide for a four-hour hike.

9 of the best day trips from Sorrento, Italy

Day trips from Sorrento, Italy

Sorrento’s stunning sunsets, clear blue seas, delicious food and panoramic views make it one of my favourite places in Italy . But as well as being a fantastic place to visit in its own right, Sorrento is also surrounded by some of Southern Italy’s best sights.

You can easily base yourself in Sorrento and take day trips out to places like Pompeii, Capri and the Amalfi Coast, all of which are accessible by public transport so you don’t need to hire a car. So here are nine of my favourite day trips from Sorrento, with details of how to visit each place independently as well as tour options if you don’t want to do-it-yourself.

Map of day trips from Sorrento

Map of day trips from Sorrento

Pompeii is one of the world’s best-known Roman sites and a travel must-see that makes an easy day trip from Sorrento. This coastal city was destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, killing thousands of people and covering the city with 25-metres of volcanic ash.

But it was this ash which preserved the city underneath, and 1800 years later Pompeii was rediscovered. A whole buried city has been unearthed since then, and Pompeii’s now one of Southern Italy’s biggest tourist attractions. You can wander around its paved streets, bathhouses, temples and amphitheatres, and even spot original Roman graffiti.

The Pompeii archaeological site stretches over 160 acres so you’ll never see it all in a day, but it’s enough time to see the highlights. It’s a good idea to get a guide or audio guide – hearing the stories of life in Pompeii really helps bring these extraordinary ruins to life.

Go independent

To reach Pompeii by public transport, take the train from Sorrento to Pompeii Scavi: Villa dei Misteri, which is the closest station to the ruins. There are two train services – Circumvesuviana local trains which run year-round, and the less frequent air conditioned Campania Express tourist service (April–October). The journey takes 35 minutes.

You can book tickets for Pompeii in advance online for a specific date for €16 adults (free for EU citizens under 18 or €3.50 for 18–25s) or buy them at the entrances. You can also get fast-track tickets * if you want to avoid queuing, which include an audio guide.

Take a tour

There are lots of different tours available from Sorrento to Pompeii which include travel, entry and a guide. There’s a half-day Pompeii tour * if you’re short on time. Or you can combine it with a visit to Mount Vesuvius * or Herculaneum * for a full-day trip.

2. Herculaneum

Pompeii might be Southern Italy’s most famous Roman town, but it’s not its only one. Herculaneum – located just south of Naples – was also destroyed in the same eruption which covered Pompeii. But instead of the town being buried by the ash cloud, it was covered by a pyroclastic flow (a super-heated avalanche of gas and rock).

Like Pompeii, Herculaneum it was hidden away and forgotten, but here a new modern town called Ercolano grew up on top, until an 18th-century local dug a well. Instead he hit a Roman building and discovered Herculaneum. It’s about 50 metres below the ground level of Ercolano, so people live around the edge, looking down on the ancient city.

The Herculaneum archaeological site is a lot smaller than Pompeii, but it was a richer town so its buildings are larger and more ornate, with mosaics, statues and frescoes. Its smaller size means you can soak up the details rather than rushing around to see everything.

You can take either a Circumvesuviana local train (year-round) or Campania Express tourist service (April–October) from Sorrento to Ercolano Scavi station, which is a 10-minute walk to the entrance of the the ruins. The journey takes 55 minutes.

Herculaneum tickets can be booked in advance online for a specific date for €13 adults (free for EU citizens under 18 or €3.50 for 18–25s) or you can buy them at the entrances. You can also get fast-track tickets * to avoid queuing, which include an audio guide.

You can take a half-day guided tour * tour of Herculaneum from Sorrento by train. Or there’s a full-day combined Pompeii and Herculaneum tour * which includes lunch.

3. Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius has left its mark on this part of Italy – from the giant eruption which destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD right up to its most recent eruption in 1944 – and it’s classed as one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes. Over 600,000 people live on the slopes around Vesuvius, which became Vesuvio National Park in 1955.

From the bus stop it’s a 20-minute walk up to the edge of the crater, with a path taking you right to the rim. At the top there are views down into the heart of the volcano and across to Naples and the Bay of Sorrento. You can follow the path along the rim, where steaming vents and wafts of sulphurous fumes show there’s still a lot going on below the surface.

It’s not a tough walk but the path is pretty rocky, so it’s a good idea to wear decent shoes, pack a hat as there’s not much shade and take a jumper as it can get cold at the top.

Climbing Mount Vesuvius on the crater path

To get to Vesuvius from Sorrento, take either a Circumvesuviana local train or Campania Express tourist service (April–October) to Pompei Scavi: Villa dei Misteri, which takes 35 minutes. Then catch the EAV bus from Pompeii’s bus terminal in Anfiteatro Square. The bus journey to Vesuvius takes around 55 minutes and costs €3.10 one way.

There’s also a quicker shuttle bus from Herculaneum train station called the Vesuvio Express * which costs €10 return. And entry to the National Park is €10 per person.

Most of the tours of Mount Vesuvius from Sorrento are full-day trips * which also include a visit to Pompeii. There’s also a half-day Vesuvius tour * which combines a visit to the crater with a wine tasting and lunch at a vineyard on the slopes of the volcano.

4. The Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most stunning stretches of coastline in Europe, with pastel villages, lemon groves and pine forests perched on the cliffs. It stretches over 30 miles with 13 villages. The narrow coast road that connects them is spectacular, but a combination of crazy traffic and even crazier driving means the best way to explore is by boat.

Positano is the most famous village on the Amalfi Coast, with its postcard-perfect good looks. Wander the backstreets, visit the ornate Church of Santa Maria Assunta and try a tasty delizia al limone cake made with local lemons. The other two big-hitters are Amalfi and Ravello, but there are also plenty of villages, forts and beaches to explore.

Or head up into the hills on one of the Amalfi Coast’s walking paths. Most famous is the Sentiero degli Dei , or Path of the Gods, which runs for 4.8 miles from hilltop Agerola to Nocelle, just above Positano. But there are plenty of others at different difficulty levels.

Public ferries run from Sorrento’s port to Positano * (40 minutes) and Amalfi * (70 minutes) from April to October, and cost around €15–20 each way. There are also local SITA buses which connect Sorrento with Positano, Praiano and Amalfi, and you can change in Amalfi for the bus to Ravello. A 24-hour bus pass for unlimited rides costs €10.

You can take full-day trips from Sorrento to the Amalfi Coast by boat *, which stop off in Amalfi and Positano, and give you the opportunity to go swimming and snorkeling. Or there’s a guided bus tour * which calls at Positano, Amalfi and Ravello.

Capri has been a magnet for the rich and famous for centuries, attracting everyone from Roman emperors to Hollywood film stars. With steep limestone cliffs jutting out of the blue Tyrrhenian Sea, this island is a real beauty. The prices are as A-list as the views, but you can get a taste of the luxury lifestyle on a day trip from Sorrento to the island.

Capri’s two main centres are Capri Town and Anacapri, and both are filled with whitewashed buildings, cafés and boutique shops. From Anacapri you can take the seggiovia – a tiny one-seater chairlift – to the island’s highest point on Monte Solaro.

Another Capri must-do (weather permitting) is the boat trip to the Blue Grotto, or Grotta Azzurra. This sea cave glows blue in the sunshine, with a tiny entrance that’s only accessible by rowing boat. And there are also Roman villas, lighthouses and beaches.

Beaches on the island of Capri, Italy on a day trip from Sorrento

Ferries run from Sorrento harbour to Capri from April to October. There’s a choice of regular (30-minute) and fast (20-minute) ferries which cost around €20 each way. They do get very busy in peak season though so it’s a good idea to book tickets in advance *.

When you get to Capri, you can get from the port at Marina Grande to Capri Town on the funicular (which costs €2 one way, and runs every 15 minutes) or on foot. Public minibuses connect Capri Town to the rest of the island – or you can hire an open-top taxi.

You can take a full-day boat tour * from Sorrento to Capri which visits the Blue Grotto (when it’s open) and sails along the island’s coastline before stopping for four hours to explore the island, with lunch and a limoncello tasting included.

Views from Monte Solaro in Capri, Italy

Where Capri is all about the glitz and glamour, things are a lot more low-key and relaxed on the neighbouring island of Ischia . This is where Italians come to recharge, and the island’s thermal waters and mud baths have been used since the Etruscans.

If you want to unwind or ease any aches and pains, Ischia has a mix of thermal parks and gardens like the Poseidon Gardens and Negombo Spa as well as natural hot springs. Other highlights of a trip to the island are medieval Castello Aragonese, a castle town which is built on a fortified island connected to the rest of Ischia by a causeway.

There’s also the Mortella Gardens, built by the wife of English composer William Walton. They are overflowing with colourful plants and flowers, with a fantastic view along the coast to Forio. And the island has lovely sandy beaches where you can soak up the sunshine.

Boats in the harbour of Ischia in Southern Italy

The ferry * from Sorrento harbour to Ischia Porto runs from April to October. The journey takes around an hour and costs €24 each way. Once you get to the island, you can walk to neighbouring Ischia Ponte and the Castello Aragonese. Or if you want to explore further afield there are local buses (a day pass for unlimited rides costs €4.50) and water taxis.

There is a full day private tour * to Ischia from Sorrento which includes the ferry and a guided car tour around the island, including Castello Aragonese and Monte Epomeo. Or you can take a combined Ischia and Procida day tour * by boat from Sorrento.

The medieval Castello Aragonese island castle in Ischia

Smallest of the islands in the Bay of Naples, Procida is less than two square miles in size. But that hasn’t stopped it being named Italy’s Capital of Culture 2022. With its brightly coloured buildings, narrow alleyways, unspoilt beaches, waterside cafés and pretty harbour, it’s been used as a location for films Il Postino and The Talented Mr Ripley .

Marina Grande is the main harbour on the island where most day trips start. From there you can explore fishing villages like Marina Corricella and Marina Chiaiolella. Or visit Terra Murata, the historic heart of the island with its hilltop abbey and palace prison.

There are also some beautiful black sand beaches, including Chiaiolella and Ciraccio which are divided by two towering rock stacks. And don’t miss trying a Lingua di Due (ox’s tongue), a crispy local puff pastry filled with a lemon custard.

Alilauro run a daily direct service from Procida to Sorrento which takes 50 minutes and costs €24. They also have another daily service via Capri between June and October which takes 40–60 minutes and costs €24, but check locally as there’s not much info online.

You can also reach the island by catching a Circumvesuviana local train or Campania Express tourist service (April–October) to Naples, which takes 1 hour 15 minutes. Then take a more frequent high-speed ferry * from Naples Molo Beverello port, which reaches Procida in 30 minutes. It’s easy to get around Procida on foot, or you can hire a scooter or ebike.

You can also take a full-day boat tour * from Sorrento to Ischia and Procida, which includes swimming and snorkeling stops and around 1–2 hours free to explore Procida.

Chiaiolella beach in Procida, Italy

Manic and more than a little bit rough around the edges, Southern Italy’s capital is bursting with character and makes a real contrast to our other day trips from Sorrento. The historic heart of Naples is its centro storico , which is packed with world-class architecture, from the dramatic Duomo to its fresco-filled Baroque churches and palazzos .

You can also see some of the archaeological treasures unearthed in Pompeii and Herculaneum at the city’s Museo Archeologico Nazionale. As well as the sights above ground, there’s a whole network of tunnels 40 metres below Naples’ streets. You can the explore catacombs, water cisterns and wartime shelters that lie underneath your feet.

And make sure you come hungry as Naples has some of the best food in Italy. It’s the city where pizza was created but also has tasty pasta, seafood and sweet treats, as well as wine which is grown on the fertile slopes that surround Mount Vesuvius.

Naples Duomo

It’s around 75 minutes from Sorrento to Naples by either the Circumvesuviana local trains or Campania Express tourist service (April–October). There’s also a SITA bus connecting the two, which costs €2.80 one way and takes around 75 minutes.

Or you take the more scenic route across the Bay of Naples on board the high-speed ferries * from Sorrento to Naples Molo Beverello port. These take around 40 minutes and cost around €14 one way. They run year-round but are more frequent from April–October.

Most tours run from Naples to Sorrento rather than the other way around. But you can make your own way to Naples using the public transport options above or a private transfer * and take a city tour – there are lots of different Naples tours available including a walking tour *, underground tour * and street food and sightseeing tour .*

Shops and cafe on the streets of Naples in Southern Italy

Long before the Romans made their mark on this part of Southern Italy, the region was home to the Ancient Greeks. And you can still see one of their most impressive monuments at Paestum , just south of the Amalfi Coast. This coastal city was founded in the 6th century BC and is where you can find three of the best-preserved Greek temples in the world.

The temples date back to between 600 and 450 BC and have been made a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Paestum is an atmospheric place to walk around – and is usually a lot quieter than Pompeii or Herculaneum. The biggest of the three temples is the Temple of Neptune, which is 60 metres long and is almost completely intact.

Then there are the two smaller temples of Hera and Athena. The site is also known for its ancient tomb paintings from 470 BC. Paestum was eventually taken over by the Romans, and you can see the ruins of their forum and amphitheatre, before it was abandoned and overgrown until it was rediscovered and excavated in the 18th century.

Temple of Athena at Paestum Greek archaeological site in Italy

Paestum is a bit fiddly to get to by public transport but it is possible. First catch a Circumvesuviana local train or Campania Express tourist service (April–October) to Naples’ Garibaldi station (75 minutes). Then it’s a five-minute walk to Napoli Centrale station where you can catch a mainline train to Paestum, which takes 1 hour 15 minutes.

The train station in Paestum is a 15-minute walk from the ruins. Entrance to the archaeological site costs €12 for adults from March to November and €6 from December to February (free for EU citizens under 18 or €2 for 18–25s).

You can also take a full-day tour * from Sorrento to Paestum, which includes a guide at the ruins and a tour and tasting at a local buffalo mozzarella farm.

Capri, Ischia and Procida: 5-day Italian island-hopping itinerary

Friday 24th of February 2023

Would you have a suggestion of a hotel to stay at in Sorrento to be able to easily access public transportation to Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, Capri? Is there a certain area that would make this logistically easier?

Lucy Dodsworth

Sunday 26th of February 2023

Hi Heather, the train station and ferry port are only around 10-15 mins walk apart (though there is a big hill on the way). There are a cluster of hotels on Viale Enrico Caruso (like the Hotel Antiche Mura Sorrento or Hotel Plaza) which would be an easy walk to both. Or if you wanted a sea view there are a string of hotels along the coast to the left of the harbour.

Hi Lucy. I am tasking my wife to Sorrento for a surprise 50th birthday treat. I'm really struggling to know where to stay. Whether in Sorrento , Piano di Sorrento, Meta or Sant'Agnello. I've been looking at different Air BnB options as I don't have thousands to spend on hotels etc., Do you have any advice

Friday 13th of May 2022

Hi, I'm actually heading back to Sorrento this summer so have been looking into this – I ended up going for an AirBnB in Sorrento itself as it seemed most convenient. Piano di Sorrento and Sant’Agnello are a bit out of the action so probably cheaper, but you may need to get the train/taxis if you're planning on going into Sorrento to eat.

John Stevenson

Sunday 2nd of June 2019

I'm visiting Sorrento for the 1st time in August, you've given me some food for thought.

Are the public transport links good or would a private tour be a better option to book?

Monday 3rd of June 2019

The public transport is actually pretty good but it does take longer and times are restricted, so it depends how long you have to spend – if you only have a few days a tour is a good way to fit a lot into a short time.

9. Herculaneum

Visiting the ruins of the 600 BC Greek settlement at Napoli Sotteranea, touring the museums, admiring Caravaggio’s paintings, walking through the Egg Castle, and stuffing on Margherita pizza – or, why not, learning how to make it yourself! – are some of the unmissable affairs in Naples.

The coastline of Ischia island seen from above, with its white houses on the left of the image, and the sea on the right

Ischia is a staggering volcanic island situated on the Gulf of Naples , close to 30 miles off the coast of Sorrento. Its picturesque scenery is Ischia’s best attribute, featuring a hilly landscape, sandy beaches, and glorious natural springs.

A Medieval castle sits atop a volcanic plug and steals all the views from the island, which itself houses a combination of old buildings and modern, 5-star resorts. Relishing the local cuisine, getting pampered in the thermal spas , strolling along the narrow alleys, and catching the views from the viewpoints are some of the best things to do on a day trip to Ischia.

How To Get to Ischia from Sorrento

Getting to Ischia from Sorrento takes between 50 minutes and 1 hour and 20 minutes by ferry. There are few daily crossings between the two locations , so it’s advisable that you check the current schedule ahead of time and ideally take the first ferry of the day.

An alternative would be to get to Naples and take a ferry to Ischia there , as they run more frequently. However, you’d have to add some extra time to your journey.

How To Get to Irpinia from Sorrento

The best way to make the journey is to drive yourself . The trip takes a little longer than 2 hours, as Irpinia is 140 kilometers from Sorrento.

Getting to Irpinia using public transportation takes longer and it’s quite a hassle , but it’s doable if it’s your only alternative. If you’re visiting a specific winery for a tour, it might be better to ask them for transfers from Avellino or take a taxi to get there.

Herculaneum

Colorful frescoes inside a house in Herculaneum

One of the best excursions from Sorrento is to Herculaneum, another victim of the infamous eruption of Mount Vesuvius . Completely buried in 79 AD, the city was rediscovered in the 18th century, and today it’s an open-air museum that showcases the architecture, culture, and lifestyle of Herculaneum’s citizens before the tragedy.

It’s smaller than Pompeii, and it does not display any body casts but actual skeletons , which is one of the reasons Herculaneum is not as popular, even if both cities were casualties of which is considered one of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes.

Paintings, cases with jewelry and other valuable artifacts found during the excavation, the remains of a Roman Boarding House and several other buildings, a Mosaic Atrium, and Roman baths are some of the things visitors can see at the site.

How To Get to Herculaneum from Sorrento

The trip from Sorrento to Herculaneum only takes 40 minutes on the Circumvesuviana train. You’ll get off at Ercolano , a small town located on the shadow of Mount Vesuvius and merely 1600 feet from the ruins.

Path of the Gods

A walking trail with stunning views of the Mediterranean sea, and surrounded by nature

Path of the Gods is one of Amalfi Coast’s most famed hikes , and should be unmissable for outdoor enthusiasts! The hike is 5 miles long and it goes along an ancient route, the only link between the coast’s towns back in the day.

The path goes through villages and the occasional ruins of shepherd’s houses, and it offers jaw-dropping views of the coastline. In fact, it offers hands down the most rewarding views of the Amalfi Coast , and the scenery is unmatched – so you better not forget your camera!

The hike can take from 2 to 4 hours, depending on your pace and the stops you make. It’s of moderate difficulty, but it can be unbearably hot in the summer months as there is little to no shade! So make sure you start very early in the morning and are equipped with a hat, sunscreen, and a water bottle – which you’ll be able to refill along the way.

How To Get to the Path of Gods

Path of the Gods connects the town of Bomerano with the hilltop hamlet Nocelle , which is located above Positano. The most common route is to start in Bomerano, so you’ll need to make your way there from Sorrento. After the hike, you could spend the rest of the day in Positano; two birds with one stone!

There are buses that connect Amalfi Town with Bomerano, so you’ll first need to make your way to Amalfi . You can do so by taking the ferry or the Sita public bus that departs from the train station. I’d advise you to check the schedule for both and take the earliest means of transport to make the most of your time.

Best Tour to Path of the Gods from Sorrento

➤ This Path of the Gods Hike includes transfers from Sorrento, and the journey along the ancient route with a professional guide, allowing you to take in the breathtaking scenery and learn the myths and history behind the trail. ➥ BOOK IT HERE

The island of Procida, with its colorful houses facing the sea, where there's a great number of boats moored on the shore

Procida is a lovely but very tiny island off the coast of Naples, known for featuring colorful houses , a staggering coastline , and historic sites . One of its highlights is, in fact, the walled Medieval village of Terra Murata , situated at the highest point of the island and which took on the roles of monastery, prison, and, nowadays, privileged viewpoint.

Things to do when in Procida include swimming in its azure waters, strolling along the vibrant Marina di Corricella , visiting the church, and crossing the bridge to the nearby Vivara Island , a fantastic State Nature Reserve.

How To Get to Procida from Sorrento

Procida is a one-hour ferry ride away from Sorrento. There are only two daily crossings to the island , so you’ll need to check the current schedule shortly before making the day trip to make sure you don’t miss it. I suggest taking the earliest ferry, which departs at around 9 AM, to enjoy a full day in Procida.

Best Tour to Procida from Sorrento

➤ Ischia and Procida Boat Tour is a great day out as it includes visits to both islands on the Bay of Naples, cruising around them on a comfortable boat and enjoying swimming and snorkeling stops on the way. ➥  BOOK IT HERE

Paestum is an ancient Greek city built in the province of Salerno over 2500 years ago. Its oldest structure, the Temple of Hera, dates back to approximately 550 BC!  It’s no wonder that it’s recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Situated on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea, the archaeological site was initially a Greek colony named Poseidonia , which was later conquered by the Romans who renamed it what it’s called today. The ruins of the three major temples, Paestum’s major attraction, are incredibly well preserved, making the visit thoroughly enjoyable and informative.

The temples of Hera, Neptune, and Athena feature Doric architecture and are equally impressive, but not the only thing to see at the site. A very interesting archaeological museum enlightens visitors on the history of the city , and the ancient houses and piazzas are also worth checking out.

How To Get to Paestum from Sorrento

Unless you’re driving, there’s no direct way to get from Sorrento to Paestum. By public transportation you’ll first need to make your way either to Naples or Pompeii on the Circumvesuviana train, and from there catch another train to Paestum. The ruins are a 15-minute walk from the station.

11 Top-Rated Day Trips from Sorrento

Sorrento's location on the Bay of Naples is not only a beautiful one, but it's well positioned as a base for exploring the entire region. The Bay of Naples and the Amalfi Peninsula, which forms its southern shore, are lined with some of Italy's best known tourist attractions.

One of the most popular things to do here is hop on a boat and travel to Naples, the idyllic Isle of Capri, or the Amalfi Coast. The Circumvesuviana train takes you to Pompeii and Herculaneum, and from either of these, it's a short bus ride to Vesuvius, the mountain that destroyed both of these ancient cities.

Plan your adventures and find the best things to do with this list of the top day trips from Sorrento.

Amalfi Drive

Amalfi coast cruise, herculaneum, hike the path of the gods, spend a day fishing, map of day trips from sorrento.

Pompeii

Uncovered after lying for centuries encased in a thick layer of solidified volcanic ash that engulfed the town of 20,000 residents in AD 79, Pompeii gives a poignant look at life in ancient Roman times. You can walk through homes, meeting places, temples, theaters, and shops that have been coming to light since excavations began in the 1700s. As you tour Pompeii , you can't help but be aware of still-smoldering Mount Vesuvius looming in the background.

Several of the homes still have vivid wall paintings, frescoes, and mosaics, and statuary still adorns the gardens. Although early finds were carried off to museums, those found more recently have been left in place to give a more realistic picture of homes and workplaces just as they had been left on that terrible day.

Explore Pompeii with an expert guide who will recount the city's history during a half-day Pompeii sightseeing trip from Sorrento . You will be picked up at your hotel for this four-hour trip, during which you'll see and learn about Pompeii's most famous sites, including the Forum, Thermal Baths, Lupanare, and Vetti's House.

Amalfi Drive

Although it's only 48 kilometers long, the Amalfi Drive is one of Europe's most beautiful - and rightly famous - stretches of coastline. You could easily spend a day or longer enjoying the scenery and the little towns that cling to its steep slopes overlooking the intensely blue Tyrrhenian Sea.

Deep ravines cut into the mountains that form the spine of this narrow peninsula, so the road follows a curving course as it rounds each point and dips back into the coves. In many places it is carved into a corniche that is poised almost directly over the sea. Driving it is not for the timid, but especially in the west-to-east direction, which means driving in the outer lane.

The Amalfi Drive has few stopping places, except in the towns, so to see the most scenery, taking a tour or a bus might be the best idea. Be sure it's one that stops in at least one or two towns, so you can climb their vertiginous streets and stop in a café to savor their holiday air. Or follow one of the ancient mule paths along the coast, walking through lemon groves and tiny hamlets clustered against the steep mountains.

The easiest way to explore this coast is with someone else doing the driving on a full-day Amalfi Coast experience from Sorrento . The eight-hour tour begins at your hotel, and you'll spend the day traveling by air-conditioned mini-coach, stopping to visit the Amalfi coast's three most popular towns: Positano; Amalfi; and Ravello, with its lovely gardens overlooking the sea. You'll have plenty of time in each to stroll the narrow streets, shop in the boutiques, or have a bite to eat.

Capri

Ferries run regularly from the harbor at Sorrento across the Gulf of Naples to the romantic island of Capri, or you can take a day tour.

From the Marina Grande, where the boats land in Capri, you can make reservations for a boat to the Blue Grotto , a sea cave that is one of Capri's best-known tourist attractions . Or you can ride the funicular to the main town. Here and the smaller harbor of Marina Piccola are the best places to spot celebrities that frequent the island.

For lofty views of the Faraglioni sea stacks , in the sea off the Marina Piccola, stroll the blossom-draped paths of the botanic gardens near the monastery of San Giacomo . A bus will take you higher yet, to the uppermost town of Anacapri , where the gardens of the Villa San Michele frame views of the sea and other side of the island.

The skipper of a traditional wooden boat will tell you more about the island as you cruise around it on the small-group Capri day cruise from Sorrento . This eight-hour tour is limited to just 12 people and includes exploring caves and grottos and the famous Faraglioni rocks. There is a stop for swimming and snorkeling at Marciano or Mitigliano, and snacks and drinks are on board. The three hours of free time on your own in Capri is plenty of time to go to the Blue Grotto or take the chairlift up to Monte Solaro for the views.

Amalfi Coast Cruise

You'll get an entirely different – and just as beautiful – perspective of the Amalfi coastline from a tour boat. And on the trip from Sorrento, you will also round the far end of the peninsula, where the Lattari mountain range ends abruptly at the sea.

Choose a cruise that has at least one stop, which will probably be at Positano or the town of Amalfi, so you can get a feel for the towns and enjoy views from the land as well as the sea. Amalfi coast cruises often include a cruise around the island of Capri, too.

Herculaneum

The same AD 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius that covered neighboring Pompeii in hot ash encased Herculaneum in molten lava. As it flowed, it filled in Herculaneum from the bottom up, so instead of its weight crushing structures as the sudden rain of ash did in Pompeii, it supported columns and walls as it rose, holding them in place.

This lava - from 12 to 30 meters deep - hardened into pumice, a light-textured stone that held everything in place until modern techniques could release them. Fortunately, by the time excavation unearthed Herculaneum, modern ideas of protecting ancient monuments and preserving artifacts in place had also taken hold.

Today, you will see entire streets of multi-storied homes and public buildings that have been excavated, complete with mosaics, decorative friezes, and paintings that have not been carried off to museums, as much of Pompeii's treasures were. In addition, the airtight seal of cooled lava preserved organic materials, which add to the surprisingly vivid view of Roman life.

Piazza del Plebiscito

Even for exuberant Italy, Naples is on sensory overtime. Everything seems to be happening in its chaotic streets, where social, commercial, and everyday life blend in perpetual motion. The aromas of its famous pizza, the sounds of laughter and music, the colors of painted stucco intensified by the southern sun all swirl around you as you climb through its neighborhoods.

Get a better understanding of Pompeii from admiring the artifacts and art that were brought from its excavations to the National Archeological Museum . The Capodimonte Royal Palace and Museum displays more treasures of the city's long history, which spans from Greek settlement in the eighth century BC and includes rule by Byzantine, French, Spanish, and Austrian empires.

Along with its palaces, Naples has a rich artistic heritage in its cathedral and many churches. You can only hope for a sampling in a day trip here, but it's a day you'll remember.

Ravello

High above the deep Valle del Dragone ravine near the town of Amalfi, Ravello was once much bigger than it is today. Its prominence in the early Middle Ages has left it with monasteries, palaces, and villas, and the 12th-century church of San Giovanni del Toro , with ancient frescoes in the crypt and a beautiful mosaic pulpit. The cathedral , which dates from even earlier, has a pair of exquisite inlaid pulpits .

But for all the riches in its churches, what you'll remember longest are the views from its gardens down into the sea far below. Now parks open to the public, these surround lavish villas. Villa Rufolo ' s oldest part is a huge stone watch tower, and the ruins of the rest have been incorporated into the gardens or restored to house art exhibits and concerts.

Villa Cimbrone's gardens have perhaps the finest views of the Amalfi coast, from the Belvedere Cimbrone, reached by a tree-lined promenade through the gardens. Alongside this avenue are smaller gardens hidden among the crumbling walls and highlighted by statues, fountains, columns, and even temples that were collected by its early 20th-century English owner.

Vesuvius

The volcano that engulfed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum forms a dramatic backdrop to the Bay of Naples, a favorite take-home photo for tourists in Sorrento. You can get up close and personal with Vesuvius by taking a bus from either of the two excavated Roman cities or driving to the Vesuvius National Park , about 1,000 meters in altitude and about 200 meters from the top.

From here, you can climb to the rim and look into the crater. You can walk all around the rim for views of Naples, the bay, and the Amalfi peninsula. The volcano is still somewhat active, although the last major eruption was in 1944.

Ischia

Larger and less crowded than Capri, Ischia has better beaches and plenty of island charm. It sits in Naples Bay, and a morning ferry can take you here from Sorrento, returning in the late afternoon.

The town of Ischia, on the northeast coast, has two sections. Ischia Ponte is topped by the Castello atop a 91-meter rocky crag, which you can visit by crossing a stone causeway; the original castle here was built in 474 BC. The other part of town is the seaside resort of Ischia Porto , whose harbor is formed by an ancient volcanic crater.

From Forio, on the west coast, you can tour the quiet southern part of the island, where the village of Sant'Angelo seems to be tumbling down a promontory. Stop to see La Mortella , beautiful gardens created by Susana Walton and British composer Sir William Walton.

Path of the Gods, Amalfi Coast

Footpaths and old trails form a network for walkers along the mountainsides high above the Amalfi Drive, revealing an endless series of views over the rugged coast and the sea. The most popular section of these trails is the Sentiero degli Dei, Path of the Gods, beginning in Positano.

You can take a bus from Sorrento to Positano to access the trail, or you can Hike the Path Of Gods from Sorrento on a guided walking tour. Joining a group of no more than 15, you can walk the trail between Bomerano and Nocelle on a half-day trip that includes round-trip transport from Sorrento and a guide who can enrich the experience with local history and information on the coast.

Fisherman on the Sorrento coast

Board a boat at Sorento's lively marina and spend a day sailing around the magnificent coast of the Sorrentine Peninsula, fishing for some of the region's fabled seafood. On a Sea-Fishing Tour from Sorrento , you'll not only have the thrill of catching fish, but your boat will stop in Positano while the crew prepares lunch of the fish you caught in the morning.

The leisurely trip includes time for a swim or snorkeling in the crystal-clear water, or just relaxing on board and watching some of Italy's most beautiful scenery as you sail. If needed, the guide will assist you in fishing, and all equipment is provided. The full-day tour includes transportation direct from your hotel.

8 Best Day Trips from Sorrento

By Vanessa Holmes · Last updated on May 17, 2024

The city of Sorrento is found in Campania region of Southwestern Italy, and it is a spectacular getaway spot for visitors from around the world. Sorrento is built right into the cliffs overlooking the Gulf of Naples, so there is always a view of the water as well as a refreshing breeze. Since Sorrento is right on the water, many visitors come for the coastal walks as well as the lovely beaches.

To top it off, Sorrento is home to countless historic and cultural attractions like the Roman ruins of Villa Pollio. If you’re lucky enough to come this way, here are some fantastic day trips from Sorrento to add to your itinerary.

Ischia

The island of Ischia is the most developed and largest of the islands in the Bay of Naples. Ischia is directly accessible by ferry from Sorrento a few days in the week. This beautiful island only attracts a fraction of the day trippers that head for Capri in summer though there is plenty to see and do.

Major draws to Ischia include its many sprawling spa towns, abundant gardens and stunning scenery. You can also visit some of the island’s famed villas including Villa La Colombaia, which is now surrounded by a gorgeous park. Don’t leave without enjoying the island’s beaches, particularly the popular stretch of sandy coastline known as Citara.

Getting to Ischia

  • While a ferry ride to Ischia from Sorrento Port only takes an hour, they don’t depart all that regularly, so it is a good idea to plan your journey in advance. Ferries from Sorrento to Ischia only run during the summer months, so during the rest of the year, you’ll have to first head to Naples before taking a ferry from its Beverello port to the island.

Paestum

Just under two hours by car from Sorrento is Paestum, a sleepy destination that is nonetheless home to some of the world’s best preserved Greek ruins. The settlement of Paestum was founded approximately 2,600 years ago, and shortly after that founding the Greeks built three impressive structures in Paestum.

These temples, dedicated to the gods Hera, Poseidon and Athena, all stand to this day, and are surrounded by other ruins like Greek gymnasium and the remnants of a city wall. You can also explore the museum onsite, which explains more about the former Greek settlement and how the structures were built to withstand millennia of erosion, wind and weather.

Getting to Paestum

  • To get to Paestum using public transport from Sorrento is quite difficult and time-consuming, but it is just about doable if you really want to visit the Greek ruins and don’t have any other way of getting there. The easiest way to do it is to take a 25-minute circumvesuviana train to Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri, then walk 15 minutes to Pompei station, where you should board a regional train to Paestum Station. This last stretch takes about an hour.
  • Another option is to combine both Paestum and Salerno into one enticing day trip by taking a guided tour that takes you around both. After exploring the fascinating Greek ruins with an expert guide, you’ll enjoy a sightseeing tour around Salerno. The beautiful city center and stunning cathedral are just two of the highlights you can expect to see. See prices

Naples

One of the most exciting day trips you can take from Sorrento is to the city of Naples , which you can reach by train in about an hour. Naples is the capital of the Campania region of Italy, and it is one of the country’s biggest, most vibrant cities. Naples is home to several interesting palaces and castles, the most interesting of which might be the Castel dell’Ovo at Porto Santa Lucia, or egg castle, which is located on a small peninsula just off the coast.

While in Naples, you should also make time to see the Royal Palace, explore the 2,000 year old Napoli Sotterranea aqueducts that run underground through the city and try some of the famous thin-crust pizza margherita for which Naples is famed.

Getting to Naples

  • By circumvesuviana train, it takes around an hour to get to Naples from Sorrento, and trains depart frequently. Once you arrive at Napoli Garibaldi, it is then just a short walk to many of the city’s most impressive sights.

Your expert guide will make sure that you see all the main sights in both places. Throughout the tour, you’ll see the spectacular Royal Palace and grand Cathedral in Naples, as well as the Forum, Thermal Baths and Lupanare in Pompeii. See prices

5. Herculaneum

Herculaneum

Just next to Pompeii is the settlement of Herculaneum. Although it is not as popular as Pompeii, Herculaneum suffered the same fact after a volcanic eruption nearly 2,000 years ago. Many of the city’s ancient buildings are actually better preserved than in Pompeii, which makes it ideal for historical and architectural enthusiasts.

When you buy tickets for the ruins of Herculaneum, you’ll be able to see the baths that were fed from a natural well, incredible mosaics that are still installed in the House of Neptune and Amphitrite, a luxurious waterfront dwelling known as the House of the Deer and the Samnite House, a courtyard residence that is believed to the oldest structure still standing among the ruins.

Getting to Herculaneum

  • To reach Herculaneum by public transport from Sorrento is very easy; all you need to do is catch a 40-minute circumvesuviana train to the Ercolano railway station. From here, you’ll see signs pointing you to the archaeological site, which is around a five-minute walk away. As Herculaneum lies on the same train line as Pompeii, you could stop off at the neighboring historical site on the way back to Sorrento.
  • Another option for visiting Herculaneum is to take a guided tour that not only takes you around the impressive archaeological site but also around that of Pompeii. See prices

4. Mount Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius

Behind the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, you’ll see the towering peak of Mt. Vesuvius. Although it is famously known for its eruption in 79 AD, Vesuvius is now a dormant volcano in a gorgeous national park that is only an hour from Sorrento by car.

This is a spectacular place to enjoy world-class views and to get outdoors and be active. A popular way to explore Mt. Vesuvius is by hiking along the trails of the crater. From some vantage points around Mt. Vesuvius, you can even get panoramic views of the Bay of Naples.

Getting to Mount Vesuvius

  • Visiting Mount Vesuvius by public transport from Sorrento is relatively easy; it should take you around an hour to an hour and a half to reach the crater rim. First of all, you need to hop on a Circumvesuviana train and alight at Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri. From here, take the BusVia del Vesuvio bus, which departs on the hour, to the entrance of Vesuvius National Park, where you will be transferred to an eco-bus which will take you to the start point of the 20-minute trail to the summit.
  • Many visitors to Sorrento who want to visit both Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii in one day opt to take a guided tour, as this takes you to both to the summit of the volcano and around the ruins of the city that it once destroyed. See prices

Capri day trip

You can take a water taxi directly from Sorrento to the island of Capri, which is found just three miles off the Italian mainland’s coast. Capri has long been a popular island getaway, was favored by the Roman emperors and is even known as the Isle of the Sirens.

Today, visitors to Capri can see the Blue Grotto, or Grotta Azzurra, which is a small cave once used as a bath by the Romans. You might also want to tour some spectacular homes like Villa Jovis, the former residence of Emperor Tiberius, or the 20th century Villa San Michele.

Getting to Capri

  • During summer, ferries to Capri from Sorrento’s Marina Piccola Port depart roughly every half hour, with the boats leaving less frequently the rest of the year. The journey takes about 25 minutes, and once you arrive, you’ll find buses and taxis waiting to take you around the beautiful island.
  • A lovely way to explore all of Capri’s amazing sights is to take a guided tour. These not only take you on a jetfoil to the island, but also for a sightseeing bus trip around it. See prices

2. Amalfi Coast

Amalfi Coast day trip

The Amalfi Coast is a stretch of coastline that runs for about 25 miles along the road called Strada Statale 163. This drive lets you overlook the water virtually the entire way, providing unparalleled views.

While there are plenty of beautiful vantage points along the route, be sure to stop at the actual town of Amalfi. There, you can tour a 10th century cathedral, take a stroll along the pebbled beach or just sip a glass of wine or limoncello at a bar or cafe overlooking the town’s world-famous marina.

Getting to Amalfi Coast

  • From Sorrento, there are a couple of different ways to visit the stunning Amalfi Coast by public transport. The most popular option is to take bus 5070 from Sorrento Station; this weaves its way along the Amalfi Coast, offering up breathtaking views of the sea and coastline as you go. It takes around an hour to get to Positano — one of the most picturesque towns along the coast — and around an hour and a half to get to Amalfi. In summer, you will find these buses can get very crowded.
  • During summer, the other option is to take a scenic ferry ride from Sorrento to either Positano or Amalfi. Ferries depart regularly from Sorrento Port, and to get to Positano takes 50 minutes, with Amalfi being another 25 minutes.
  • Although it is certainly not too complicated to drive along the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento, it can be a bit of a nightmare, as the narrow winding roads often get clogged with traffic. In addition to this, parking can also be a bit tough to find, especially in the summer months. On the upside, however, driving there yourself does mean that you can stop off at such lovely places as Positano, Ravello, and Amalfi as you go.
  • To avoid the hassle of getting there yourself, you may want to consider taking a guided tour; these allow you to sit back, relax and take in the beautiful views without having to worry about getting around. See prices

Pompeii

One of the most popular day trips from Sorrento is the city of Pompeii , which is just 15 miles north along the Italian coast. Pompeii has a history that dates back more than two millennia, but most people know it for the enormous volcanic eruption that took place in the region in the year 79 AD.

The eruption essentially preserved the ancient city, and excavation means that you can get a glimpse into everyday life from nearly 2,000 years ago. See the 20,000 seat amphitheater, the street of tombs and the stunning murals in the House of the Vettii.

Getting to Pompeii

  • To get to Pompeii from Sorrento is very easy and quick; all you need to do is hop on a Circumvesuviana train and alight at Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri around 25 minutes later. Trains run frequently, and once you arrive, you’ll see lots of signs pointing you to the entrance of the amazing archaeological park.
  • Another option is to take a guided tour of Pompeii. This is a fantastic way to really delve into the history of the fascinating site. With a professional guide at your side, you’ll learn all about the fateful eruption that coated Pompeii in ash. See prices

A Day Trip from Sorrento to Naples

Two itineraries to discover the city of Naples

A Day Trip from Sorrento to Naples

Naples is a sprawling city, the cultural capital of southern Italy with almost three millennia of history—not to mention 8,200 pizzerias, architecture influenced by waves of invaders going far back in history from Spain, France, Rome, Arabia, and Greece, more than 450 churches in the historic center, a maze of narrow alleys rich in history and folklore, and some of the most important museums in Italy. It would be impossible to see all the city's treasures in a single day, so here are two walking itineraries to help you discover some of the highlights.

The beginning point for both is Via Toledo , a main thoroughfare lined with shops and restaurants running from the royal quarter of Naples to the city's old town. If you are arriving with the Circumvesuviana train at the Piazza Garibaldi station, follow the signs for the Metro Linea 1, and take it towards Piscinola. Get off at the Toledo station, considered one of the most beautiful subway stations in Europe.

If you are arriving by ferry, walk up towards Piazza Municipio until you reach La Galleria and the beginning of Via Toledo.

From 3 to 6 Hours: Royal Naples

Via toledo – palazzo reale – maschio angioino.

Walk along Via Toledo until you arrive at one of the entrances to Galleria Umberto I; walk through to reach The San Carlo Theater , which connects to the Naples Royal Palace with adjoining gardens. From here, there is a nice view of the Maschio Angioino , the iconic castle that looms over the city's port (if you arrive in the city through the port, it is your first majestic view of the city).

If you want to begin sampling Naples' famous cuisine right away, stop at the “Mary” pastry shop at the entrance to the Galleria form Via Toledo and order a traditional sfogliatella or babà.

Piazza del Plebiscito

Now continue to the sweeping Piazza del Plebiscito, which stretches across 25,000 square meters and is one of the largest squares in Italy . One one side, the piazza is lined by the Royal Palace, and on the other by Piazza Trieste e Trento and the stunning Church of San Francesco di Paola. In front of the church, the equestrian statues of the Bourbon King Charles III and Ferdinand I by Antonio Canova dominates the square. Traditionally, visitors try to cross this immense space with their eyes covered, passing between these two equestrian statues...you'll find it is almost impossible to do!

Book a tour of the Royal Palace with an audioguide

Where Should I Have Lunch? Street food : there is unlimited options in this area. We recommend la pizza fritta at Zia Esterina (on the corner between Piazza Triste e Trento and Via Nardones), followed by a gelato from Mennella and an espresso from Gambrinus. Lunch with a sea view : continue along Via Santa Lucia to Via Partenope. Here, you can stroll through the historic Borgo Marinaro fishermen's quarter for a fish and seafood lunch, or stop in one of the waterfront pizzerias. We recommend Sorbillo Lievito Madre, on the corner of Piazza Vittoria.

From Piazza Vittoria, walk back up Via Calabritto to Piazza dei Martiri, the elegant heart of the city. From here, continue along Via Chiaia back to Piazza Plebiscito where you can take the subway to the train station or return to the port.

From 5 to 8 Hours: Old Naples

Piazza del gesù nuovo and chiostro di santa chiara.

Walk along Via Toledo in the opposite direction of Piazza del Plebiscito to Piazza Dante . Take a look around the square, then double back to Via Cisterna dell’Olio and take it to Piazza del Gesù . In this square, you will immediately notice the marble "Obelisco dell'Immacolata" and the lovely facade of the Chiesa del Gesù Nuovo, made with a unique decorative motif in volcanic rock. Nearby, the Santa Chiara Monastery is an important example of Neapolitan Gothic architecture, and has a beautiful cloister with ceramic tiling that shouldn't be missed!

San Domenico Maggiore and The San Severo Chapel

From the Santa Chiara Monastery, continue along the Decumano Inferiore (also known as Spaccanapoli ), the historic Roman road that divides the city of Naples in two. This is the most vibrant street in the historic center, and just steps from the monastery. Around the corner of Vico San Domenico Maggiore, the San Severo Chapel is a deconsecrated church that once belonged to the Principi di San Severo, and is rich with Masonic symbols and known primarily for its artistic masterpieces, including the Veiled Christ by Giuseppe Sanmartino. Be sure to stop here and admire this important monument and its treasures!

A Sweet or Savory Snack There are a number of traditional "friggitorie" in this neighborhood that prepare freshly fried seafood sold in “cuoppi” paper cones, or if you are craving a sweet, try a sfogliatella pastry from Scaturchio in Piazza San Domenico Maggiore or chocolate from Gay Odin.

Piazzetta Nilo and San Gregorio Armeno

After visiting the San Severo Chapel, go back to Piazza San Domenico Maggiore and continue straight to Piazzetta Nilo . Here you must stop at Bar Nilo and take a snapshot of the display holding a lock of footballer Maradona's hair: an almost spiritual experience for fans from Naples and across the globe! After your espresso break, continue along San Biagio dei Librai until turning left on one of the most characterstic lanes in Naples, San Gregorio Armeno , famous for its artisanal workshops making traditional Nativity scenes. Tiny figurines and Christmas decorations that are both holy and whimsical are sold all year long, though around Christmas the lane becomes so crowded that it's hard to walk.

Where to Have Lunch The end of Via San Gregorio Armeno runs into the beginning of Via dei Tribunali, where a number of the most famous pizzerias in Naples are located. Stop in Gino Sorbillo for the best pizza in Naples (matched only by the pizza at Michele a Forcella), but note that lines can stretch up to 2 hours. If that's too long to wait, there are a variety of great alternatives, including Da Matteo or Al Presidente. If you would prefer pasta over pizza, sample traditional Neapolitan dishes at the Trattoria La Campagnola.

Via dei Tribunali and Napoli Sotterranea

After lunch, purchase tickets for Naples Underground (Naples Underground) , a tour through a warren of tunnels dug out of the tufo bedrock below the city that ends with a hidden treasure: the Greco-Roman theater of Neapolis dating from the 1st century BC where the Emperor Nero performed with his lyre, accessible only through a trapdoor located in the bedroom of a private home! After your tour, continue walking down Via dei Tribunali to Via Duomo where you can visit the city's cathdral.

Napoli Sotterranea (Naples Underground) tickets

Il Duomo di Napoli

With its blend of Gothic elements from the 14th century and Neogothic from the 1800's, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (more commonly known as the Duomo of Naples) is the most important religious site in Naples, where the ampul containing theh blood of the city's patron saint San Gennaro is carefully guarded. Three times a year, the city's faithful gather to watch as the blood is miraculously liquified, said to be a sign of good fortune. After visiting the Duomo, stop in the adjacent Museo del Tesoro di San Gennaro, where gems rivalling those of the British Crown Jewels are on display.

Your tour of Naples' treasures ends here: continue along Via Duomo towards Corso Umberto I, take a snapshot of the famous work by Jorit that depicts the young San Gennaro covering an entire wall, and head out of the city along the “Rettifilo” (a local nickname for Corso Umberto I). Both the central train station and the port are an easy 15-20 minute walk from here.

Naples is home to some of the most important museums in Italy, which take hours to visit. A perfect side trip for a rainy day!

7 of the best places to cruise in Italy

F ew countries can compete with Italy’s tourist appeal . Anyone who visits can enjoy fantastic cities, quaint villages, a string of picture-perfect coastlines, amazing cuisine and a fascinating history.

Alhough skiing , city breaks or a trip to one of the Italian lakes all have their own merits, there is a way to get a taste of several different parts of the country in one whirlwind trip.

Cruises around the Bel Paese give passengers the opportunity to see Italy ’s full range of sights. You can start with the romance of Venice and wind around to the rugged island beauty of Sicily and Sardinia, or begin surrounded by the stark coastal beauty of the Cinque Terre and end in hectic, characterful Naples , via the enchanting capital of Rome .

Whether you just want to see one destination or a handful, there’s likely a cruise to suit you; we’ve rounded up some of the best below.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast contains a little bit of everything that has made Italy so famous: beautiful coastlines, golden sands, picturesque towns, ancient historic sites and a hearty slice of la dolce vita .

The main towns along this coast include Amalfi, Sorrento and Positano , each renowned for offering a taste of the highlife in often luxurious surroundings, whether that be laid-back beaches or grandiose hotels. Pompeii lies close to these towns, offering an incredible insight into a famous bit of world history, while driving part of the Amalfi Coast’s winding roads is the best way to get amazing views while taking in some delightful towns.

How to do it

See both Sicily and the Amalfi Coast with the ‘ Amalfi & Sicily ’ seven-night package offered by Star Clippers. It starts in Civitavecchia, taking you to Amalfi and Sorrento before moving on to Messina and circling back to Rome.

Prices from £3,629pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and select entertainment. Departing 6 July 2024.

The capital is a beautiful fusion of historic and contemporary Italian life, from the modern cuisine and nightlife of Monti to the old houses and trattorias of Trastevere or Parione.

The Eternal City is also Europe’s most landmark-filled destination , with everything from Roman ruins to 18th-century fountains. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon are the undoubtably highlights, as are the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. The Vatican City is also contained within Rome, and you don’t want to miss the Sistine Chapel or St Peter’s Basilica.

Most cruises to this part of the country actually dock at nearby Civitavecchia, which is roughly one hour from the capital. Rome is often a starting point for cruises too, as passengers can head north to the Cinque Terre, east to Sardinia and south to Naples and Sicily.

The  Italian Treasures  cruise offered by Atlas Ocean Voyages begins in Valletta , the historic Maltese capital, but after departing very much focuses on the eastern Italian coast. It stops for a night in both Syracuse and Giardini Naxos (on Sicily), before departing to the Amalfi Coast and Capri and then finishing in the capital, where you can explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,946pp including eight nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onshore excursions. The company is currently running a promotion where the ‘second guest sails free’, so it is possible to get the entire package for just £2,946. Departing 1 September 2024.

Venice is perhaps the most beautiful of all Italian cities, situated on a vast lagoon and criss-crossed by dozens of bridges that hang over its canals. Its waterways are lined with the colourful facades of centuries-old buildings, many of which carry a Venetian style that is unique to the city, making for an eclectic cityscape.

A gondola trip, a stroll around St Mark’s Square, a walk over the Ponte Rialto and a visit to the Doge’s Palace are customary for those seeing the city for the first time, though for many the real attraction is getting lost in the sea of mazy alleys and historic bridges .

Many cruises start and end in Venice too, though due to its location at the top of the Adriatic, it can take a while to cruise down to other popular destinations like Bari, Sicily and the Amalfi Coast. If you’re visiting on a cruise, chances are it’ll be a longer one, or that it’ll stop in destinations in northern Croatia , Dubrovnik or northern Greece .

Azmara Cruises’ ‘ Italy Intensive Voyage ’ takes passengers all the way from Rome to Venice. It begins by going north to Florence , then turning back on itself and going south to the Amalfi Coast and Sicily. After a brief stop in Kotor, Montenegro , you’ll finish in Venice, with the opportunity to explore at your leisure before flying home.

Prices from £2,060pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks, evening entertainment and select onshore excursions. Departing 10 April 2024.

Sicily is another of Italy’s famous islands, sharing a part of the Mediterranean with neighbouring Sardinia. It is equally as charming as Sardinia, and filled with similarly beguiling towns, a variety of natural landscapes and some of the finest culture and history that the country has to offer.

Tradition is paramount here, something that is reflected in a proud local populace. It is also visible in towns and cities like Palermo, and the timeless beauty of Syracuse, as well as on the olive groves and vineyards that dot the slopes of Mount Etna. It makes Sicily a great place to come if you want to see modern-day Italian living with a dose of outdoor adventure, in places like the Parco dell’Etna, along with historic charm (such as that at Syracuse).

Windstar Cruises’ ‘ Sicilian Spendours ’ cruise begins and ends in the Italian capital, but as the name suggests, this trip very much focuses on the largest island in the Mediterranean. It begins by heading to the Amalfi Coast, but then moves on to three Sicilian towns – Trapani, Porto Empedocle and Catania, via Gozo and Malta .

Prices from £3,105pp including 10 nights’ accommodation, meals and onboard entertainment. Departing 28 May 2024.

Sardinia, which sits off the eastern coast around six hours from Civitavecchia by ferry, is one of Italy’s most popular summer destinations. A favourite among both tourists and Italians, it is home to a slew of great beaches – including Cala Goloritzé and the Costa Smerelda – and so is a good choice for days spent flitting between water sports and lying in the sun.

Though it’s understandable if you want to spend most of your time here on the sands, it would be remiss not to visit some of the pastel-hued towns and verdant national parks that lie inland and on the coast. Places like Alghero, Bosa and San Teodoro contain plenty of history throughout their cobbled streets, while Asinara and Gennargentu are two of the most picturesque natural areas.

Sardinia’s southerly location means that cruises that stop here often carry on to Sicily and Malta, and may go further on to the Balearics, Greek islands or even Tunisia .

The ‘ Enchanting Italian Coastlines ’ tour from Emerald Cruises covers both Sardinia and the eastern coast over a period of seven nights. It begins in the capital, moving first to Sorrento and Amalfi and then crossing the Mediterranean to Sardinia and Corsica before looping back.

Prices from £3,379pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and airport transfers. Departing 27 April 2024.

Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre competes with the Amalfi Coast for the title of Italy’s most famous coastal area, but the Italian Riviera offers a different kind of beauty in its emerald waters and pastel-coloured towns. The region is part of Liguria, and consists of five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.

Each one has an abundance of old Italian charm, from the faded colours that come alive at sunset to the mazes of alleys leading up from tiny harbours. Only Monterosso has a proper beach, but this village quintet isn’t the place for solely a beach holiday, despite the coastlines. Instead, wander aimlessly through the villages, enjoy a laid-back meal or take to any of the surrounding hiking paths.

These once isolated villages are now tourist hotspots in their own right, with the Cinque Terre Express one of the best ways to get between them. Most cruises dock at La Spezia, the province’s main city, which lies just 20 minutes from the nearest Cinque Terre village, Riomaggiore.

The Cinque Terre is a less frequented destination on longer cruises, so the best bet is to visit as part of a multi-country cruise. Celebrity Cruises offers one such option with their ‘ Italian Riviera & France ’ package, which departs from Rome and initially heads south to Naples before circling around to La Spezia and Santa Margherita. After some time spent enjoying the Italian Riviera, you move on to the French one, seeing Cannes and Marseille before finishing in Barcelona.

Prices from £1,209pp including nine nights’ accommodation, return flights, all meals, daily activities and entertainment. Departing 4 June 2024.

Naples is a fascinating city, buoyed by a vibrant and chaotic energy and blessed with beautiful surroundings – including Mount Vesuvius and an azure bay – and an eclectic blend of architecture.

The city itself has a wealth of culture and history, from the recent and immaterial – such as its devotion to pizza or its football club – to the ancient and pertinent, including the Duomo cathedral and a large collection of Greco-Roman artefacts at the National Archaeological Museum. Be sure to talk a walk around the Spanish Quarter, Centro Storico and Spaccanapoli (the city’s main thoroughfare) to get a real sense of how life is lived in this hectic city.

Naples is the closest major city to the Amalfi Coast, and as such many trips here are combined with a visit to towns like Sorrento or Positano.

You’re spoilt for choice when including Naples in a cruise itinerary, and many cruises that stop here also include visits to parts of Greece and Croatia. A seven-day Mediterranean cruise from Norwegian Cruise Line takes advantage of these stops, taking guests from Rome to Venice via Valletta, Split and Corfu. Nevertheless, the focus is still on Italy, taking in the historic capital, the romantic canals of Venice and all of Naples’ characterful chaos (with an added stop in Messina, Sicily).

Prices from £1,573pp including seven nights’ accommodation, all meals and drinks and onboard entertainment. Departing 14 August 2024.
